Straw hat women redesigns :) I was trying to doodle some of the crew and came to the realization that I just Could Not with Nami so I wanted to play around with it a little bit
Some more design notes below:
Nami’s design actually went a lot smoother for me than Robin’s! I think canon post timeskip Nami is a very low bar. While you can argue that to some extent Nami being vain and seductive is part of her character, I do feel that there are many more integral parts of her character that can be highlighted in her design, namely map making and her combat. Though not one of the stronger straw hats, Nami does seem to be well practiced with her staff outside of its use for weather manipulation, and I think her being a physical combatant, even slightly, can be better reflected with more loose clothing for better mobility.
For her mapmaking, I wanted her to have constant easy access to her tools and to information about the locale, so around her waist she has one large pouch at the back for books and scrolls and maps in progress and one small pouch to the side for writing utensils and measurement tools. As backup she also has 2 pens in her bun, which also act as pins for keeping her hair up if she ever needs to move a lot.
I’m not sure how clearly it shows up in the notes, but Nami’s shoe soles are also made from whatever artificial cloud material makes up the weather island she stayed on during the timeskip, so that it both pads her steps to make them soundless and bounces for better mobility. The shoes are naturally shaped like heels but without the actual heel, since she tends to move around on tiptoes anyways- a nod to her epithet as cat burglar and her past as a thief.
I made her shoulders a bit broader because I think they probably get a lot of exercise with her staff, and changed out the bikini top for a more supportive chest wrap, with a loose tank over it for breathability. The compression socks and sleeve are more stylistic than anything, since I like layers, but they might come in handy for her if she spends extended amounts of time sitting down making maps for the crew.
Robin’s was a bit more difficult for me to figure out, and I might go back and revisit it at some point. For Nami, it was a bit easier to imagine what would pair well with her combat methods and her needs as a mapmaker, but with Robin, she’s an academic who fights almost completely hands off, without a specific weapon to her name. Because her strength lies mostly in her devil fruit, she has a bit more room for style over functionality, but I also still wanted her to have something that made sense with what she was. I don’t really think I succeeded in that regard, but it’s also hard to convey what she does visually— she’s more of like a professor than a field archaeologist I think.
I really really enjoy her cowboy hat but I didn’t think it would match with the rest of the outfit so I switched it out for a wider brimmed hat and kept the orange sunglasses on it, as a nod to the revolutionaries with the combination of headwear and eyewear. She deserves a trench coat. I don’t make the rules. And the rest of the fit mostly came down to things I think I would enjoy wearing, haha
The trench coat is partially a nod to the scholars of ohara, who seem to wear white coats like lab coats in some screenshots of robin’s backstory. I think also the reading glasses help to make her seem a bit more academic, but aren’t prominent enough to leave a strong impression. All in all I do wish robin’s design had more functionality in it but I also think that robin is a character who probably enjoys dressing up nicely like this, especially in the comfort and stability of the straw hats.

Smth bout this macho-ass man finally getting to stay back n not take charge for once feel nice, also princess Adam supermacy wooooo. Whoever came up with the ship name i applaud u cause that's like a 3 layers name(ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧

it was only a matter of time, before i would have made another crossover with those two. i can't deny, that they are very 1:1 for me, when it comes to comics supervillains. so why not to mix one awesome n' beloved thing with another? esp since funny enough, they do have quite a few similar plot-points. well, the halloween themed costume aside. i mean it goes as far as jack once having the bat-themed boyfriend pal, which reminds me of someone else, i know.
anyho'...
i've tried to make my notes more or less readable here, but they still might be a bit scattered. i attempted to keep them as short as possible, but i just cannot talk 'small'.
1. the first art is low-key based on underdeveloped AU, that i have about the early comic scarecrow n' modern jack meeting n' hitting it off serial killiar style. considering, that both of them possess killing methods, which have a noticable tradmark to it, i imagine that they will leave one hell of a mess behind, while traveling across the country. in that timeline, batman is dead. n' jack's shitty foster dad was killed off earlier on. neither of them knows what to do with themselves, since the people who they had *twisted* emotional conection with are gone. without any direction, they meet in the middle, n' decide that they can as well team-up n' try to make being a villain fun again. jon might experiment on their victims *or torture them if its his ex bullies* n' then give them to jack, who would scoop their brains out and put candle inside their skull. n' uh yeah, he literally did it in the comic. i was honestly surpised that marvel come up with smth that creepy. it really sounds more alined with dc, if anything. but either way, here they are. two *grieving* psychos going downtown. they will make one another so much worse, i imagine. n' they will totally kill that npc dude btw.
2. dark magic n' the drip. or jon n' jack at their corniest. like, jonathan looks like he watched too much the nightmare before christmas n' jack dress up like count dracula for no reason. it's so random-ish n' cheesy. but with this being said, i love both of those designs, n' think, that they really suit the vibe of comic issues in which they were featured. jack always came off as a he-witch to me, but it was nice to see it being played on in a different way. n' then, crane really rocks his own outfit as well. i totally need to draw him in it more often, haha. they dress up for a halloween party for real this time. n' well, i added batman n' spiderman into the mix here, bc i kinda wish that they got to fight / interact with those versions of jon n' jack. it would have been fun for a few reasons. also this can be technically counted as shipping art, but can be viewed as your typical gloating bad guy n' helpless hero thing too. n' to clear any possible questions, i only create stuff with adult peter parker. like cartoon era/late early comics, 20 smth one. i love my spiderman being of age, where he can legally mingle with his villains, not be detained at school lol.
3. the classic four from the timeline, when the comic plots were a bit more ligthearted. aka during the times, when the deadly mercenary n' crazy scientist were robbing banks, instead of harming *torturing* people. i love dark stuff, but there is charm to how 'simple' the scarecrow's and jack's goals once were. n' i love how the scarecrow used to do the lil, dorky dances. it really suits him. n' since at least 2 or maybe, most of jack o' lanterns are southernish in their roots like jon, i had an idea of them having a country dance *in the middle of graveyard* kinda just makes sense to me, haha. batman and spiderman merely happen to find them like that. n' well, it's kinda awkward. esp bc they technically don't do anything bad. i also imagine spiderman being like 'oh, so you have one of those too'. which is mostly a ref to how both the scarecrow n' jack were called 'the reject from land of oz' by other characters. they can rejoice here.
4. the develish & undead duo!! my friend once told me to try n' watch older superhero cartoons, and at first i was like 'welp, they prob be hella boring'. but then i caved in, n' watched a couple of superfriends episodes. as result, i fell in love with their scarecrow's desingh! it was unexpected tbh. usually, i prefer jon's older, classic scarecrow look. so no straw hair, less features exposed, just a hat n' a sack on his head, but their version of him actually did it for me. i find their crane both creepy n' cute. n' i also read on wiki, that he might be undead. so that bit interested me as well. non-human jonathan crane, what a concept! him returning from the grave just to be a menace to batman. n' to accompany him, there is an undead jack o' lantern from the ghost rider comic. his corpse literally got possessed by satan. anyways, both of them raised army of zombies. both of them undead n' prob won't ever get out of their spooky suits, since i don't think that they can. n' funny enough, jack's hometown was called sleepy hollows, if i remember correctly. so they can haunt people there, make it into a truly cursed land.
5. the last one was kinda spontaneous on my part. the other day, i was looking at what kind of action figures the scarecrow n' jack have. saw one, where jon was looking kinda strange, all black n' yellow. which is how i find out that he *apparently* got yellow lantern powers in newer comics, even if it was like for 10 seconds or smth. i didn't read the issue itself, but i found the idea kinda fun, n' his design was decent enough for me to get interested n' wonder what i can do with it. then, a bit later, i saw that jack had a venom-funko figure. i don't think, that he was ever canonically venomized in any of the actual comic issues, but once again, the mere idea of it happening was enough for me to consider doing smth with it. i mean, a venom-like tongue, but its made out of fire? dang. that's kinda cool. so yeah. the yellow lantern scarecrow n' symbiote jack o' lantern being the double trouble. if they weren't enough of a mean goblin-man before, now they surely will be.

I'm like, kind of obsessed with them lmao. While I've drawn Vox quite a lot (I've been working on a Vox animation thing over the last month-ish) I hadn't done much of anything when it came to Val and Vel. I knew I'd want to do something with them all later on, but I wanted to get a good understanding of their designs, shape language, and the differences between the three of them so I can play a lot more when it comes to doing them (heh) in my own style.
So, since I was most familiar (and most obsessed with out of the three lol), I started with Vox :3

While I've been working on the animation project, it had kind of been an 'adjust-as-I-go'/'let's-bullshit-this' process, rather than doing the work of understanding why certain things looked more correct than others, so I still learned a LOT from this one study. (Plus the scene makes me wheeze and I happily took the excuse to use that moment as his study reference haha)

Obviously Val is... an asshole, to really undersell it. But this is hell, his character is interesting and his design is immaculate. I think I had the most fun with studying him tbh. Without his santa wings-coat he- *coughs* - yeah. Uh. Good design. I can actually believe that Angel fell for him at one point. Manipulative bastard - sorry tangents. ANYWAY! XD
VERY fun to draw, and a very good balance within these designs of showing off character attributes but also not taking themselves too seriously (The HATS these boys wear! *wheeze* did Velvette just give up fighting them on it? I've gotta know haha)

I missed color too much by this point to make them all match perfectly, and frankly - trying to draw canon Velvette without hue differentiation is AWFUL she has so many details and overlapping elements. If I ever have to draw Vel from 1x03 again I might cry.
Something about her 1x03 look actually makes me feel viseral irritation just by seeing it (like, even b4 I made myself draw it), but then I see her in 1x08 and I wanna draw her forever???? She's so fucking cool? So fucking cute????? The duality of man ig lmao
Anyway, the TLDR is that actually being conscious of how things are represented when drawing a character can lead to surprisingly immense insight... I feel like I not only understand so much more about how to represent their characters, but also a much firmer grasp about how the shape language in the show works.
These designs are immaculate and I had so much fun. I actually have a lot more I could say about this, but my period came today and I'm tired and this post is already massive so I'll leave things here for now! But yeah! Hopefully more Vee's in the future bc I love them!

Trigun hyperfixation has an iron grip on me and I desperately need to get my head to think of something else. Especially cos I crave so much for good stories but to my suprise, a lot of (vashmeryl) fanfics I read are extremely samey, especially the post-anime ones.
That being said, while reading, I was actually suprised to see a few scenarios or themes never explored? So I thought, since I can't get my brain to focus anyways, might as well drop some vashmerly hcs and prompts.
the one I'm most suprised has not been explored at all is Meryl and Milly trying to teach Vash how to actually talk/flirt with women. I still dunno how Vash came to be known as a womamizer in the og anime cos he is abyssmal when it comes to flirting. So, after an especially embarassing rejection, Meryl picks a fight with Vash as usual and he's all like "yeah, then you show me how it's done." Not one to chicken out on a competition (and with avid encouragement by Milly) they set up a fake date. I can totally see it going really funny, Meryl trying her darn hardest to act like an actually interested date but can't help herself from cringing and and scoffing at how stupid Vash' approaches are. So basically, it would be a mix of silly flirting and a lot of bantering. By the end Meryl admits that he's not half bad if he just turns down the goofiness a bit, mentioning if he just ties up the night nicely he might even score a second date (she means in general, not realizing that it sounds like she's implying a date with her). Cue Vash doing the only smooth move in his life and stealing a goodnight kiss, asking "well, did it work?"
less of a prompt or headcanon, but in all the scar-centric fics Ive read, not once is it mentioned how Vash has a literal cage over his heart? Ive always loved this little design aspect, since it so obviously shows Vash fortifying his heart and keeping everyone out. I can also see Meryl being all smug like "well, im small and nimble, and the spaces between the bars are wide, I can easily slip through"
another funny thought about the metal grids on his body would be them cuddling but Meryl's hair gets caught on the metal and now they have to akwardly maneuver out of this situation
Meryl uses any and all situations to be taller than Vash. Since she is so much smaller than him, she usually stands when he sits, especially when they argue, tries to be just a few stairs above him or walks a few more steps up a slop so she can peer down on him. Not that her presence isn't big enough already, but she for sure tries her hardest to assert dominance.
To her dismay, Vash likes to use this moments to pick her up. I dunno why, but since Meryl is so small I can see Vash just enjoying it to pick her up and twirl her around. Lugging her around like a pretty looking sack of potatoes.
Vash is a human pretzel. He will contort his body in ways to hug as much of Meryl as possible.
Meryl becomes incredibly good at ignoring Vash if she needs to work. She could be sitting at her typewriter, only noticing Vash has her in a vice grip when Milly asks if she isn't distracted.
Despite how spiky it looks, Vash' hair is actually pretty soft and fluffy, and once Meryl finds out she uses any opportunity to run her fingers through it. Vash doesn't mind cos he totally digs the head scratches (humanoid typhoon? more like humanoid doggo)
when traveling together, they usually share a thomas cos Vash can't ride for shit. Vash likes to be dramatic and complain about it (cos he's a big boy thank you very much) but he can't deny that he wholly enjoys being cuddled up behind Meryl for hours on end.
Welp, just some food for thought cos my brain is in Trigun overdrive. These are specifically based on the 98 versions of them but I have a whole lot for Stampede as well haha

here's a quick doodle of them as well as a thank u for this ask bc uGH i adore them too (they are barely mentioned and basically everything i like about them i came up with in my own silly little head). this is a pretty long post so do continue reading under the cut if you'd like! ^^
gosh idk where to even begin okok. unironically girlboss and malewife. in my mind kichirou is kinda goofy, the more laid-back parent while namiko's the stricter one despite generally being a pretty quiet person in general.
shizuo definitely gets his temper from namiko i think, and while arguments wouldn't at all be frequent it'd basically be up to kichirou or kasuka to calm them both down whenever they happened ToT
i think namiko has an artistic sort of hobby like painting. don't ask me for any reasonings i just feel like she does, and this passtime eventually rubbed off on kasuka a little since i recall he likes painting too? she'd specifically paint landscapes, her favourites being beaches and the sea. because of this though she tends to spend a lot of her free time a little secluded. sometimes, especially as children, she'd let kasuka and shizuo watch her paint and let them try out their own stuff too, but since shizuo's immense strength became apparent he sort of began to feel like he wasn't as welcome as he once was in a studio full of her fragile hard work so he harbours a sort of reluctance doing any of that anymore.
speaking of, namiko would worry about shizuo. a lot. maybe TOO much in fact. she'd frequently scold him for getting into fights and things like that, and because she's his mother i don't imagine he'd really retaliate. he'd be real pissed off and slam his bedroom door (off it's hinges😭) in a huff, sure, but there's no way in HELL he's pulling a stunt like almost throwing an entire fridge at *her*. she'd be the one dragging him to the neighbours houses and making him apologise for kicking the entire bonnet of their car in or meeting with the head of school because shizuo threw a chair into the wall. idk i kinda get the impression that their relationship is a liiittle strained because their personalities kinda clash but they love each other really. whenever something's bothering shizuo i feel like namiko picks up on it pretty quickly and does little things like make him his favourite dinner or grab a cake from the store on her commute to cheer him up.
kichirou on the other hand is big on sports i think, and listen he DEFINITELY taught his boys how to play baseball. only narita can tell me otherwise like until it's outright disproven this'll always be canon to me. i feel like he's the golden retriever to namiko's black cat in the sense he's a lot more outgoing and talkative and relaxed than her, albeit maybe a little more oblivious. i imagine he was really impressed and boastful about how strong, like a real athlete, his eldest was until the property damage and hospital bills were on the rise.
i feel like kichirou would be pretty attentive to kasuka. like oh he's kinda quiet is he making any friends at school? that kind of thing. where namiko stresses over dealing with shizuo i think kichirou would kind of overthink anything going on with kasuka.
despite namiko being the more temperamental of the two i think kichirou still gets really defensive whenever he catches wind of people talking smack about his family. like you can make fun of him all you want but the moment you get a bad word in about his boys or god FORBID his wife i feel like it's on sight. i don't think he'd go as far as getting into a fight about it but the sudden drop in light-hearted attitude to a very cold and dead serious "haha the hell did you just say?" would be enough to shut most people up. perhaps kasuka gets his acting skills from him, as in being able to switch up at the drop of a hat. otherwise i feel like kichirou's really friendly, though again maybe a little oblivious, probably has met shinra's dad before and thought he was a cool guy but maybe just a tad strange (a sizeable understatement).
in essence, think like phil and claire from modern family or mr and mrs fox from fantastic mr fox. that's basically the dynamic of them i have in my head =w= i might have more HCs but this is all that's coming to me rn. again, thanks so much for the ask!!!! ToT💕

My best card is by far my lvl 50 Trey SSR. I really like Trey too haha, but tbh he’s only this highly leveled because he’s an SSR lol…I’m sad we can’t pull an Idia SSR in the beginning of the game! 。゚(゚´ω`゚)゚。 But the rest of my team is in their 20s, so…I think my lvl 50 Trey is the main reason I get friend requests haha. I really want the Idia Glorious Masquerade card, or just any Idia SSR :((((

The thing is, I’ve been closely following TWST ever since it came out on the JP server, but never actually been on the JP server myself. I watched pretty much all the twst content on YouTube over and over and over again, so I know most of these stories close to heart -v- And even though I immediately downloaded the game when it released on the EN server, I never actually did much???
I’ve been feeding all my resources into Trey to hopefully ease me through future Savanaclaw battles, but this probably isn’t a smart decision haha…I’ve never been good at understand card stats, despite playing a lot of gacha and team building games before. I tend to only log in for a few lessons or take screenshots of voicelines when I need them. I’m so mad at myself for missing the Ghost Bride and Wish Upon a Star Event for those Idia cards 🧎🧎🧎
Now that I’ve exposed myself to the TWST fandom though…I might try to level up more LOL 🤧

Shhh... secret draft designs. Don't tell Twitter yet. Please give me any feedback, and feel free to read my many design thoughts under the cut. Also feel free to use the designs yourself.
Alright! The things right at the top that i wanted to keep in mind were things in the series that are distinct to mechanites vs things warforged have.
As far as I remember, there are only two notable ones. Mechanites have jaws that cannot move, instead they have face plates that can open up. And while the other isn't stated in canon, warforged have crystals in their eyes, and mechanites are never pictured or described in that way.
I almost broke the first rule on purpose with DX-TR, seeing as he's described as human-like and the negotiator, but as I was going through the series again, he was explicitly stated to have the same stiff jaw.
The only heights (I think) we have were that VR-LA got the haha funny meme number at 6'9", MR-SN was a few inches taller, and C-RA is at least as tall as Finbar (7'2"). From there, I wanted DX-TR to be nearly as tall as VR-LA, so he's around 6'6"/6'7". E-DN is about the same height as him because I feel like with her satyr legs, her being taller made sense. I put K-LB around 6'2" because I was originally going to have a slight joke that this height was after he'd already made mods to himself with heels and his mohawk. I didn't like how the heels came out, so I left it out. AS-TR is the shortest at the bare minimum height for warforged at 5'10". I'll get into that in the section discussing her design.
While it didn't really come up in these designs, since VR-LA has been pictured with yellow eyes, and described with blue, I've headcanoned that mechanites eyes change color based on how much processing they're doing. So the default would be blue, when they're calm and just hanging out. Their eyes switch to yellow when they're concentrating or focused on something specific. Orange is when they're flustered or upset. Red is the dramatic color for when they're really angy. I'd imagine someone like DX-TR can deliberately control it to avoid giving away some tell, but I don't think it's common for mechanites to do it.
The designs are mostly based on the same shapes and pieces that VR-LA has, rather than Vice/He-11, as those feel like they're kind of unusual in that regard. And even if they're not, I'd still chalk it up as a difference in their plane of origin. Onto individual character notes!
C-RA was described as being large, having a sort of knights templar, aesthetic, somewhat like living armor but more organic. Mostly what I referenced was plate armor, so pretty straight-forward. That being said, I feel like her design's a little plain. I wanted to add something to her head to help distinguish her head silhouette more. Plus I feel like her colors are too desaturated, and she just doesn't really have a shape that carries throughout her design. Idk, it's fine, but it just doesn't feel striking.
MR-SN was described as being slender, regal, and with a permanent smile in his eyes. I feel like I had a similar issue with him that I had with C-RA where there doesn't seem to be anything that carries through his design. I feel like I captured the face pretty well at least where he looks kind and kind of like a dad who's just proud of you. He's one I kind of feel like with clothes, his design might work better. I had no clue what color to go for, so it's just a color that I thought would be unique enough to the group.
VR-LA is just based on his season 1 art. The only thing I changed from how I drew him before, was mostly just proportions, like around the joints. I wanted him to be a thin, scrawny nerd, so he's also more narrow than before. My goal was half of C-RA's size, and I think C-RA's about 1 1/2 VR-LA's, so it's close enough.
DX-TR was described as human-like and bald with a flesh tone color. He was honestly really easy. As a joke, I referenced Seth Everman for his face sculpt, and I think it came out well. Mostly I referenced human muscles for his sculpt. I considered giving him tattoos, but didn't really have any ideas for that. He's got two notably unique traits from the rest of the group. He's the only one without shoulder pauldrons, which I kinda want to change, but idk there, and the light in his eyes is round rather than the cross design I treated as baseline. I wanted a less human saturation in skin, and I don't think I achieved that, but I'm not sure it'd look as good. I kinda want him more uncanny valley, but idk what to do there.
E-DN was described as a similar mechanite design as VR-LA, but with satyr legs. I gave her horns and horizontal pupils, mostly just for variety. I gave her a little more of just a round shape compared to VR-LA's more angular shapes. Her design I like over all. I like the colors, and I think the mint accents help her stand out. She's got good shapes and a good silhouette. And everything feels like it came out pretty well with her.
K-LB I'm torn on. I almost feel like he stands out too much. As far as what's described, I had the hardest time figuring out his design. He's described as a standard mechanite that's gold with fine gold filigree that looks like wire mesh, as well as a blue glow from his arms. I was going for somewhere around a punk-ish Rodney Copperbottom from Robots kind of idea. The filigree mesh I just used a nonsense text brush because i didn't have any specific ideas there. I like how the yellows/blues look together. I like the hexagon shape that carries throughout. His silhouette's mostly different enough from everyone else. I don't think he's too saturated. Yet I just don't feel like his design fits him, and I don't know what to do. He's the one I feel like scrapping and redoing the most.
AS-TR was described with long hair, and a slight glow, but didn't have much of a description as far as I remember otherwise. She had two notable design inspirations. Selûne and my cat who coincidentally has the same name (mostly my cat lol). One of Selûne's avatar's is described as long limbed (which is kind of how I just drew the mechanites), with pale hair, dusty skin, and green eyes. The pattern around her eyes is a less exaggerated version of some of her iconography. Her eyes are tinted green with her holy symbol as the shape of the lights. If I were smart, I'd actually have put all seven of the stars that are a part of Selûne's holy symbol (and I might change that later). Aster (my cat) is a tiny little black cat with a grey undercoat and two tiny lil white spots. So from there, I made AS-TR the smallest mechanite, she's two different shades of grey, and she has two little white spots on her chest in a similar size, shape, and location as Aster's. As a result of the name coincidence, and from what we've seen, similar personality, AS-TR is required to be my favorite, lol. Even excluding that though, I do like how her design came out too. Like I said, I might change the design slightly to have the seven stars across her, and I might change the greys to have more contrast because they're too similar, but the whole design came close to what I had in mind.
Over all, I'm pretty satisfied with all of these designs, and while there's things I'm going to change, I think these are all pretty solid.

“Black Eye” VERNON Interview
A lot of people were probably expecting your solo song to be hip hop, but “Black Eye” is a punk song.
When I first went to make a song, I couldn’t really think of what I should do. But I have a friend named Robb Roy who worked on “Ash” off FACE THE SUN and thought I could work with him on the song. He’s a graphic designer by trade, so he made the album art for my single album. We also like a lot of the same music and talk a lot. He was with me when I was in the studio and writing my rap for “Ash” and giving me ideas. We ended up working together better than I expected so I said we should do something together for real. I had a few other songs but the people who listened to them all said this was the most suitable one so I ended up going with that one.
You’ve always been interested in punk, right? I heard you listened to it a lot when you were young too.
I guess I was exposed to rock even as a kid.
My parents are really into it, too. I heard it a lot when I was young, and I feel like pop punk started to get popular again over the last few years. I dabbled in it for the past two years but now I’m really getting into it.
I was really impressed by the character in your song, as far as being punk goes. He really seems like a punk - like how he gets lost in his own anger and is so averse to talking to other people that he calls himself his own friend.
The song was inspired by a mutual friend of Robb and me. He’s sort of distracting. (laughs) And he feels lonely a lot of the time. Not everything in the song’s about him, of course, but we did take some inspiration from him when making it. He’s the one who suggested the title when I played it for him after we changed the original version with Korean and English all mixed together to be all English. That’s when he came up with the idea to call it “Black Eye.” I thought it was a really good fit for that rough-around-the-edges feel. 
“Black Eye” refers to an injury, but in the context of this song, I feel like it could also mean emotional pain. He refuses other people’s attempts to get close to him, then it ends with, “Knock knock, Is there anybody out there?” So it feels more psychologically pressing.
I decided that would be an appropriate ending. The ego of the character in the song sort of goes back and forth in the outro. He might suddenly have a lot of fun with someone and get too close, then push them away because he’s afraid of hurting them. But he pauses a little after saying that. Like he’s not sure whether he should really go away (laughs) and then, knock knock - that’s how it ends. I wrote that part and I agree that it works really well. Haha.
Do you yourself ever feel conflicted like that?
I’m not quite that bad. (laughs) I’m definitely the kind of person who needs other people. I want to be able to rely on others.
There must be a lot of times when it’s hard to express how much you need people since you do work that a lot of people recognize you through. What do you do when you want to express that to someone but you can’t? 
It all comes down to differences in perception in the end. Eventually. I think for certain things, when I decide to see them one way or feel a certain way about them, that’s the only way I’m going to see or feel about them. So even though I might not be able to control my feelings, it’s down to the way I think about it, so I do think I have a certain amount of control.
Is that what you like about hip hop and rock, then - that it gives you a way to control and express your feelings?
I think that’s part of it. I think my tendency toward that also influences my tastes. I felt this great sense of relief when I made “Black Eye,” even. I was able to make it exactly how I wanted, and yelling and telling the story through lyrics was a major stress reliever and really fun.
Your vocals in “Black Eye” are amazing. You sing in low, husky tones on certain words and it makes your vocals impactful even when you sing more quietly during the chorus.
As you say, some parts are a little husky and deepish, but I also feel I found a bit childlike at parts. I don’t know why, but I’ve always felt that way. I didn’t really like that when I was younger, but as I got older I realized it gave me something unique. That’s why I wanted to do pop punk: to sing something that suits my voice.
I was really impressed how you just used your particular vocal tone to carry the chorus in a quiet voice rather than going for something big. It only serves to add to the feeling that you were screaming your lungs out beforehand.
I wrote the melody for the chorus and Robb wrote the verses and outro. It really was a collaborative process. The whole song is basically me yelling, so I consciously told myself to ease up a bit when I was recording the vocals. Since I’m already shouting, I thought it would be overkill if I shouted even louder, so I tried to have a light touch when we were mixing it, keeping it relatively clean and not trying to beautify it too much with reverb or anything and keeping that to a minimum. 
You say you tried to minimize the amount of reverb, but it seems like the recording picked up a natural amount of echo from the way you sang. Were you going for a live sound?
I’ve been to that recording studio a number of times since debuting, so I’m really familiar with it and I’m close with the recording engineer, so I asked them to listen while I was recording and kept asking them for their feedback, too. I wanted it to sound clear and very pop punk. 
Working on this was different from working on a SEVENTEEN album. Now that you can look back, how do you feel about it?
I realized a lot of places I can improve while I was working on “Black Eye.” This was supposed to be my song, but I think I realized too late that there were things I should’ve been taking a more active leadership role in. When we’re working as SEVENTEEN, we make things together and the label helps us in various ways, but I think there were parts of “Black Eye” I didn’t direct properly because I was doing it with the mindset of a member of SEVENTEEN. So it was an opportunity to learn how to do better for next time.
I imagine you felt a little regretful about that inasmuch as you were also your own producer.
You’re right. Exactly. With SEVENTEEN, there’s the other members and lots of professionals, so even when it’s my song, we’re making it together, but I was the only one who knew what I wanted in this case and was doing it all on my own, so I realized I should’ve been doing more to direct things. I u sed to feel like I was really trapped in a corner, and this time I was trying to be more receptive, but I was so focused on trying to hear out other people’s ideas and opinions that sometimes it was different from what I envisioned. It also taught me that it’s good to do everything in moderation. 
You have to consider what other people say all the time when you’re working with SEVENTEEN. It can’t be easy for all of you to find a balance between making your ideas heard and listening to others.
And there’s 13 of us (laughs) so we’re always trying to figure out what to do at any given moment. Sometimes I think my ideas were better or more logical but what people do isn’t always based on logic. Lots of unexpected things come up in a process like that but I think there’s no other answer to finding common ground than to keep the communication flowing. I find we’re actually more like a family because we were put together through a casting process. It’s similar to how you’re born and you get the brothers and sisters that you get. You keep talking and come to understandings and that makes it more like siblings in a family. 
Does continuous communication work to solve problems? 
Sometimes it works better than other times, but it’s absolutely better to talk it out than not to. Absolutely.
How do these conversations lead to solutions? You must have to open up to one another.
Going up to them... I mean, we see each other all the time. We have casual chats about whatever in the green room, so if there’s any source of conflict, we specifically bring it up and talk about it. Just directly. And I think even more important than talking is listening - being open and listening attentively.
It’s not always easy to hear people out and take their suggestions.
 The listening’s the easy part. For example, I don’t like drinking that much, but there’s people who still like it even if it makes them sad or cry a lot. I can’t really understand people like that, but even though I might not understand them, that doesn’t make what they’re saying untrue. Just because they can’t explain it doesn’t mean they don’t like it. So I think I’m trying to accept things even if I can’t understand them. Just like that.
That reminds me of something you said in Weverse Magazine when you recommended the movie Everything Everywhere All at Once: “Let’s be kind. Let’s love each other. Right away.”
Maybe I was in sort of a late-night mood (laughs) but the lesson in Everything Everywhere All at Once is quite simple. But I think actually managing to convey that message is an unbelievably big deal. Because you might know you should be friendly and loving, but actually becoming that kind of person is really hard.
It is hard, isn’t it?
Sometimes it doesn’t work out, you know? At one point I was told that I hardly talked anymore so it was hard for people to talk to me. I was a little shocked when I heard that. I never try to make things difficult for people but I wonder if it’s my fault for being too cautious. Relationships between people - they’re never easy. The other members were able to tell me that because they’ve known me for so long. That’s helping me grow up more.
I bet you had a lot on your mind when you weren’t talking as much. 
I think it made me more introspective. And I’m still getting more so this year - about my character, my career, my attitude towards other people. I think that’s why I became more cautious at the same time. I always considered introspection important, but the pandemic gave me the chance to reflect more. With less promotion to do, I had more time to think.
Would you say that introspection is one way of finding yourself?
I don’t really think it’s about finding myself. Rather, it’s me who projects my environment and my spirit. I think it’s more about me being a reflection of my environment and my mind. I don’t really focus on finding myself.
I feel like you often describe yourself as wanting to come across as simple and real. Is this an extension of that other way of thinking?
One time I asked my friend out of the blue what I’m like and he said he likes me because I’m that kind of person. I really liked that somehow because I never saw myself coming across that way before. But when I think about it, it seems accurate. Even when I was young I preferred things that are plain and simple and not over the top, so I think that makes up a bigger part of who I am. 
What do you mean by “simple”?
“Simple”? When you just ask like that, it’s really hard to answer. I guess there’s nothing in life that’s 100% true, but I guess you could say that something’s simple if it’s real and honest. When I was young, I was trying to be someone who I wasn’t, but it wasn’t really me. It hurt me to my core. And I was probably influenced by always seeing the way my parents were unpretentious. I never want people to dislike me, but I think that if I’m like this and someone still doesn’t like me, I shouldn’t worry about it .It’s not like I”m trying too hard to do things my own way - I’m just trying not to be someone I’m not.
You were homeschooled while you were a trainee and now as a member of SEVENTEEN you’re a celebrity, which is quite a different life from other people your age. It can’t be easy staying true to yourself and living unselfishly under those circumstances.
Naturally my lifestyle is different from that of other people my age, but I don’t think there’s much of a difference beyond that. Sometimes I hang out with my friends and their friends and I think the reason it’s so chill is that it strips me of my celebrity status I used to think there was something inexplicably different about celebrities when I was young, but once I started working I realized - and I know this is a cliché to say - that celebrities really are just normal people. It seems obvious but it’s pretty easy to lose sight of the fact.
When you say “lose sight of,” part of that must also be trying to stay aware that we’re all alike.
Right. I think it’s really dangerous to forget that.
Is that way of life at all related to how you keep up with trends? It seems like you have a good grasp of pop culture, including movies, as well as your generation’s culture. 
I think the main reason is that I just find it interesting. If I feel like there’s something I need to learn about, I want to learn about it. It’s hard to really get into some things without having all the necessary background knowledge but I still try to know everything I can about those things because it’s in my nature to.
That seems to be your position: living differently from most people but still always taking an interest in what everyone knows and likes.
Personally, I think that’s a good position to have - sort of being part of the audience. If you only see what’s right in front of you, you miss everything else. Like, more of a bird’s-eye view? That lets you see more of the big picture.
What kind of music do you want to make for other people in your age group, since you’re in that position? You’ve said before that you want to make music that the young people of your generation would listen to.
As far as a message goes, I want to make music that listeners my age can relate to or that people who like the same things as me would enjoy. I’m also doing it because I like it, of course, but I think it’s best to make music that people who like the same things as me would like. I don’t think my tastes are that unusual.
You want to connect your own world with the world of others, but I guess it isn’t easy. A lot of people watch what you do. In your Mindset interview, you said that your greatest fear in life is “revealing m true feelings.”
What I meant by that is that I’m afraid to reveal my true feelings publicly. We’re in a world now where it’s kind of dangerous to reveal your deepest thoughts, you know? People are too quick to judge.
I guess it’s no surprise that you can’t say everything you want about some things due to the nature of your job. The job of an entertainer is sort of balancing act between wanting to fully express yourself and having to consider how others perceive you. Have you found a way to deal with that?
No. How to deal with it? I don’t think there’s any way to solve that problem completely. I think the only thing you can do is keep trying until the day you die.
Until the day you die.
Maybe it sounds melodramatic, but what I’m saying is... My mom told me something. She said that life is a process you go through until your dying day of trying to figure out who you are. Sort of a journey to ask, Who am I? People naturally change a little bit as the years go by. If you want to redeem yourself by always trying to be better, I don’t think there’s any other way but to keep trying until the day you die.

hii manu, im so curious and i apologize if you have answered before, but what is your editing process like for the banners and wallpapers you make ? what kind of apps and tools do you use ?
hi hi risu! i don’t think i answered such a question before, honestly. and even if i did, i doubt it was very in-depth.
this ask surprised me a bit, so my answer might be too vague, but i’m always willing to elaborate on that even further or prepare step-by-step explanation or… dunno :) i’ll gladly help, at least as much as i can <3
however, i must say that my process and possible tips most likely won’t be beginner or casual-friendly. i’ve been doing graphics since a very young age and i’m after an art high school (though they didn’t teach me that much if it wasn’t for my own passion lmao). also, unfortunately, i don’t know much about phone apps as i’m mainly a pc girlie :’)
i use adobe photoshop most of the time, though for simpler stuff i prefer adobe xd because it works much faster lol i can recommend trying out adobe express which is their free and quite easy-to-use app with amazing tools. another friendly app is canva. i used both when teaching kids during online graphic design courses. if you want a more serious alternative, i suggest photopea — some madman (positively!) basically remade photoshop into a free web app haha
my process is… messy. i often play around with many ideas just to get myself into the vibe and not forget how to do things :P sometimes it works, sometimes not. and i’m a perfectionist, so, for example, i won’t use an automatic background removal, but manually cut out characters etc. lol (at least it’s relaxing).
if i’m doing something casual (read: not entirely from scratch and by my hand, all right reserved etc.), i start by searching for inspiration on pinterest. sometimes i copy pictures to use them for later, especially if i want to cut out some parts (like with the mosaics on my new theme).
generally i want to have a rough idea of what i want to do before i even open the app, and after that i’m just moving things around, resizing, rotating, recolouring them until it looks decent. it’s similar to making a collage out of stickers and magazine pages <3 but to freestyle various designs is also cool, especially for brainstorming — it’s just definitely more time-consuming and usually not the best if you want a specific outcome.
tbh at first i didn’t want to spend hours on my theme because it’s just a personal writing blog, but i’m glad i came up with the flower divider (it was just a singular flower i copied and connected with lines, and applied gradient on top) and my colour palette, because now i know it will always work for me. i’m sure that most people would be happy with simpler results and that’s totally okay, but i’m just pushing myself to be better at design :’3

Thanks for the ask! Honestly, I am not so sure I did escape without some burnout. I was completely exhausted by the end of it! I was working on BMR over lockdown so the stress of it was kind of amplified. I made a few mistakes that I wouldn’t make again but by far the biggest one - I took on other work alongside it. If working on that book taught me anything, it’s the limits of what I am capable of haha! I would never load myself up like that again. I think it took me around a year and a half after I had handed in the finals to truly feel reconnected to any creative desire of my own. I don’t think I was fully burned out as I continued to work over that period, but it felt like I was at a distance from what I was making in a weird way. I think another contributing factor was that it just wasn’t my baby. Perhaps if that level of labour had been in service of my own idea and vision, I may have felt very differently at the end of the project. That all sounds very doom and gloom I know but I did learn a lot about economy, working under pressure and time management, those skills have transferred to other projects! I have since had the opportunity to work on some motion comics and animated 2.5D stuff on Valorant map reveals and New World cinematics. Being able to juggle many tasks at once definitely came in handy! Same with some concepting jobs I have had since too, I have developed my own economic shorthand which answers the other part of your question about style. I was delivering 3 fully painted pages a week to the editor which necessitated a much simpler visual! It was all about reduction in the right places. Big shapes and readable forms with focus on expressions and body language to assist the dialogue and narrative. Creating character designs that were distinct from one another but not too complex that they would require loads of detail on every pass. Theo Prasidis (Author) wanted to give the book a more European feel, less like something you might get from one of the big two so we leaned into a more painterly and looser vibe.  That got a little waffles there but I hope that answer was useful to you in some way at least!

1. Do you daydream a lot before you write, or go for it as soon as the ideas strike? Aw I'm bigly a daydreamer. My ideas usually spend a lottttt of time marinating in my head, and in my outline docs, before I get around to writing them. Whenever I get an idea there's always like 3 things ahead of it in my "shit to write" queue, so it simmers on the back burner for months or longer. Which is nice actually, cuz I like to make sure it's really a concept I can commit to before starting… If it can stand the test of time (I'm still daydreaming about it months later, I came up with more scenes/details in the meantime, it developed a Meaning or a Theme, etc) then I know it's a keeper.
2. Do you write scenes in order, or do you jump around? All in order, start to finish. Knowing how my brain works, I'm deathly afraid that if I designate some scenes as more appealing to write than others, and write those first? I'll never ever feel like going back to write the ones I decided were boring / difficult / underdeveloped in comparison 🫠. So I try to just approach every scene indiscriminately like "ok, how am I gonna make this one fun to write & compelling to read?" Makes it more straightforward for my anxious little head. (And fun too?? Genuinely I almost never find myself dreading a scene, or stuck on a scene I don't wanna write.) I'll constantly stop to hash out the narrative significance / foreshadowing / etc in my notes as I go, I'm jumpin' all over the place as I outline, but the work itself is a straight shot.
3. What area of writing do you feel strongest in? Characterrrrs, maybeee??? Specifically like, their relationships & interactions. I feel a special kinda magic when I get 2 characters bouncing off each other, complimenting or contrasting, highlighting traits & beliefs you might not've uncovered otherwise. And I feel like I can pull it off with almost any combination of characters, if I cram 'em in a room together. Folks tell me I'm good at characterization (thank y'all 😭!!!) - but I feel like it's more than just personality bullet points in an isolated void - strong characterization really comes from those chemical reactions that take place when blorpy interacts & orients themself against others. That's the shit I could think about & write about all day, at least, and hopefully I think maybe I manage it pretty well.
4. Who is your favorite character to write for? Has this changed since you’ve started writing for that fandom? It Is Probably Claus, And I Am Being So Fucking Brave About It. It's funny too, cuz when I started writing Mother stuff I was like "no claus lives AUs for me haha no sir." (🙃) In 2021 my fav character to write was probably Lucas, and he's still in like 1.000001st place, and still my fav character ever, so it's fine, like. It's ok. It's fine.

funny you'd ask that, Anon...it’s exactly what I've been ruminating over since episode 8 (OK, the feral thing is only part of it). sorry in advance- this is gonna be a long one.
anticipating character moves is something I'm pretty good at, especially when I'm really invested in a show. I try not to spend too much time on speculation, but I'm rarely truly surprised by what a character does. I overthink about what I should eat for dinner- so when I really care about a story I’m spending hours watching, GIFFing & writing about? all bets are off.
Akk did just that, though: he surprised me, and while it didn’t not make sense for him as a character, it broke my heart a little & gave me pause.

Aye has been breaking down Akk’s defenses in an incredibly irresistible sort of way. it’s this heady combination of his deeper feelings masquerading as flirtatious teasing, with moments of naked vulnerability in between. that openness has only been increasing in frequency the more time they spend together, and I think that’s by design (Aye’s, to be specific).
I’m going to get a little personal for context here: I see so much of my younger self in Akk. just like him, I had people who came along and slowly but surely got past defenses that kept others- and by association, pain- at a safe distance. they wore me down with affection, caring and lots of teasing, too- but the thing that always cut to the quick was when they shared their vulnerabilities with me.
I don’t think Akk’s any different: that boy's got a tender, tender heart. it’s a little underused & buried under the weight of the world’s expectations & his own type-A perfectionism- but it’s there.
Aye is very observant, and as much as he loves getting a rise out of Akk, I think he’s figured out that the best way to get through to him is to be real. over and over again, Aye is willing to make himself vulnerable to show Akk that he can, too- that he’ll be there to catch him when and if he does.
which brings us to one of the gentlest, most tender confessions I’ve seen in a drama. like an attempt at soothing a wild creature on the verge of bolting, Aye placed Akk’s hands on his face and prepared him for what was coming, while simultaneously telling him what was about to happen.

gentle but firm direction can really help when you’re overwhelmed and on the verge of an anxiety spiral like Akk was- again, I think Aye’s all too aware of his state of mind.
even still: the time for running was over, and it was time to lay their cards on the table. naturally, Aye took that leap first…someone had to show him the way.

which brings me back to my surprise: based on Akk’s reactions to Aye being vulnerable in the past, I thought it was more likely than not that this was the moment where he would finally give in- if not confess back, at least let himself fall and admit that he reciprocated Aye’s feelings.
it also made sense to me because of how far we are into the story. Aye has been coming in hot since episode 1, and with episode 8, we've arrived at the 2/3 mark. we also still have the mystery of what happened to Aye's uncle and all the school conflict to resolve, which is going to take time. this tender moment, private but still in the bright light of day (maybe a little symbolic) felt like the moment we had been working up to all this time.
for a minute, it really seemed like Akk might give in. we saw his expression shift from flat-out fear to hesitant tenderness as Aye confessed. then Aye asks him the all-important question: "can you tell me how you feel about me? can you do it, Akk?"
Akk hesitates before kicking both Aye and me in the gut: he both verbally and physically rejects Aye, pulling his hands away from him. it was the emotional rejection paired with the roughness of physically pushing him away that really got to me.
after Aye laid himself bare like he did, this was more than a little cruel. Aye was clearly thrown- he quickly moved past it and went back to being there for Akk, but his hurt was obvious. he knows Akk has feelings for him- Akk’s “I can’t say it” was an omission all on its own. Aye thought they were finally about to move past the back & forth, then towards each other- so did I.
which brings me to what I overlooked: how deeply Chadok’s influence- frankly, his brain washing- has affected Akk. you could argue that Akk’s rejection was fueled by fear of compromising his future, and I'd agree: that’s absolutely part of it.
at his core, though, Akk is a pretty selfless person. he truly believes that he must sacrifice how he feels for the common good- “common good” being whatever the hell Chadok says it is that day. when I tell you that man makes me see red & my blood boil-
which is perhaps the longest way possible to say: I hope we get to see feral Akk; I really, really do (you’re right- First could teach Feral Gay 101). I’m 99% sure we’ll see at least a little glimpse of him before the series ends, but I think we’re going to be spending a lot more time with Chadok my beloathed and working through the toxic baggage he’s left in his wake first. the fact that that fucking TOOL is inevitably going to cut into our precious couple time...as if I needed more reason to hate the guy 💀
Akk just has farther to go than I thought- emotionally, mentally, etc. I’m not blowing out those manifestation candles just yet, though.

Regarding this whole thing with Laurel trying to keep Xavier and Wednesday apart, I'm starting to wonder if Xavier was always intended to be the scapegoat for the Hyde attacks and if there might be another reason she made the remark about not being impressed with his powers and the spider animation and even assigning Xavier to work with Tyler because she would have known what Tyler did to him and deliberately set him up to have to work with his attacker.
Also, could she have been responsible or even partly responsible for the actual attack on Xavier?
I'm reading to much into this probably but there are certainly things here that make it look personal in my opinion.
What do you think?
So Laurel probably found out about Xavier liking Wednesday that time at the harvest fest. I personally think that Tyler gave Wednesday the file about her dad as an incentive to stay in Jericho, so that means Laurel was getting all the feedback from their interactions from that point on. So I think it's fairly plausible that Xavier was meant to be a scapegoat/red herring of some sort since that night.
And I'm not 100% sure if Laurel is responsible for Tyler ruining the mural.

We really know nothing about the mural's content, or why it was made. It could have been made for that Out reach day, and it was just destroyed immediately. A working theory of mine is that the mural was maybe a memorial for Xavier's mom (who was poignantly never mentioned), and Tyler had to see that mural every day working at the Weathervane and he just got sick of it, and all his friends hated Nevermore and were like "we should do something to them for outreach day" and he was like "I got an idea to get them back." But it's just a pile of hc's atm.
If the mural was designed to connect Nevermore and the town, either for outreach day or just in general, it would make sense that Laurel would want it destroyed. If she was in control of him at this time, it could have been a test to see how well controlling Tyler worked. However, maybe the test went badly because it kind of became a big thing in Tyler's life. He got sent away to a boot camp, and maybe he detoxed from Laurel a bit while he was gone. That could have messed up her plans a lot.
However, I think it's just as likely, that he was just a 15-year-old who had no one to talk to about the loss of his mother, and the only people who acted like they cared about him hated Nevermore, so he acted like he did too. And he had so much grief built up that it came out as anger.
We don't know how Tyler got his court-ordered therapy, but it could have been from this incident. Tyler said Xavier "could have made it much worse" for him, which means Xavier likely did turn him in, but just didn't tell the whole story. This leads me to believe that what happened during the assault was really really bad. Especially if it takes Xavier weeks to build up to telling Wednesday about it in the first place. It must be really painful to talk about.
I have more to say if you want, but that already seems like more than you were asking for lol

Hi, I’m a real new shiny here (on Tumblr, but also at drawing), and it’s the first time I ask anything, so I hope it’s ok. I must say first that I love the way you draw TCW characters (especially the clones)! 😍 I just came across this sketch you made on canvas (if I remember correctly) https://www.tumblr.com/thepatchycat/729224397978828800 and I was wondering, if you don’t mind sharing, how do you get the perfect white background on non-digital drawings? I currently use a scanner app on my sketches and the results are always inconsistent and far from that white… thanks a lot in advance!! 😊
Welcome to the Tumblr crew, shiny! ;) And thank you kindly!
So my dirty secret for that sketch is... it actually is completely digital! I drew it in a program called Rebelle 5, which is designed to mimic traditional canvas/paper and pencils/paints. I picked it up for super cheap during a huge sale last year, and it's a lot of fun; unfortunately, it's usually pretty expensive, as many art programs are. I highly recommend keeping an eye out for sales though if you ever get into digital drawing--and if you'd like a free program, the one I use most of the time is MediBang. But those programs are really mostly helpful for digital art, not so much for scanning actual pencil sketches.
While I tend to stick to digital drawing nowadays, I definitely feel you on the scan cleanliness issue; phone pictures and even proper printer scans tend to end up either kind of dirty or faded. The short answer is that I don't actually have an easy and effective solution, but there might be some things you can try depending on what you have available. I wouldn't be surprised if you've already explored more methods than I have, and there are definitely people with better ideas and more experience than me, but I'll share what I've tried.
Long(er)-winded rambling under the cut!
So, I currently have an unfinished piece sitting in my files that began as a traditional drawing, one that I want to keep all the pencil details for. Here's the sketchbook page, scanned using a household printer:

Not terrible, but it'd be nice to have clearer contrast between the lines and the background. In MediBang, I can adjust the contrast by going to Filter>Levels (or Ctrl+L), which gives me a little box that looks like this:

I don't technically know the nitty gritty of how it works, but by my understanding, the outer triangles for the input and output indicate the range boundaries. Adjusting the input--particularly the darker boundary--so that the output boundary exceeds it basically tells the program to make the darker parts even darker, resulting in this:

Better! As you can see, though, the darker parts of the background also show up a bit more. Rather than relying only on contrast adjustments, what I actually ended up doing was carefully erasing the background around the drawing after adding a plain white layer underneath, and also going over some of the lines digitally. I did this first in MediBang (the only art program I had when I started working on it), then transferred the file over to Rebelle.

MediBang (left) has the pure white background, while the Rebelle (right) canvas settings I chose are a little off-white and more textured, which I think blends a bit better with the texture and shading of the image. It's possible to add textures and the like in MediBang, too, but Rebelle has it built into its design, so it's a little easier to figure out there; I'll likely finish this piece in Rebelle (whenever I get back to doing so, haha), since the canvas and brush settings will be easier to match to the texture of everything that came directly from the drawing.
Most of this is much easier to do with a drawing tablet/pen, unless you're a wizard with a mouse. As for traditional means... the best suggestion I can come up with is to try inking sketches, or at least darkening them further with a pencil. The more contrast you can get between your lines and the background, the more easily you can digitally tease that contrast out even further. I think most photo editors have at least some contrast, color, and brightness adjusters, and probably more useful functions I don't even know about--it never hurts to mess around with any program's filters and settings to see what happens!
