Autobiographic references in BTS discography

This post is part of the TSU. It belongs to the first part: Biography.

Suga explained in an interview that all their songs were personal and inspired by their own lives. However, there are some that appear as more biographical than others. Even though they decided to share these stories with us, it remains the boys’ life and as such, there won’t be in-depth analyses.

The origins: using 사투리 (Satoori) and talking about Korea

Korea used to be made of 8 provinces that all have their own culture and variation of language (called satoori). As the boys come from different places, they use different dialects that are sometimes different from standard Korean. For details, I let you refer to the analyses linked below.

The point here is that while most of their songs are in standard Korean, there have been times where they used satoori. The biggest case is obviously “팔도강산” (Paldogangsan, meaning “the scenery of all parts of Korea” and titled “Satoori Rap” in English; lyrics here) but you can also find some in “어디에서 왔는지” (Where did you come from? Lyrics here) and “Ma City” (lyrics).

“Satoori Rap” and “Ma City” are also the occasion to teach us more about the land of Korea and some of its different regions.

Last detail about “Satoori rap”: it was originally a song released in 2011 by the rap line only (src)

More recently, BTS also showed Korean traditional culture to their fans through the song “IDOL” (lyrics). The lyrics, dance, outfits, and background all include elements from the Korean culture (see the post about “IDOL” for a list).

This is important on two levels.

First, South Korea has a heavy history of intern conflicts between the regions. One sadly famous fight is between the Jeolla province (J-Hope’s birthplace) and Gyeongsang (Suga, Jimin, V and Jungkook’s birthplace). Muish has a note about it and ARMY SALON made a complete post about the Gawngju uprising from May 18, 1980. It’s thus a meaningful move to integrate the different regions of Korea in one song, as a message of peace and a reminder that they’re all from the same country, as explained by RM in “Satoori Rap”:

“Why Keep Fighting Either way, they’re all in Korean Look up, and we look up at the same sky”

Note that however, the boys clearly stated that they made “Satoori Rap” “for fun” and to “diss each other” (src).

Second, K-pop is usually seen as a Korean copy of Western pop music. Integrating purely Korean elements thus counter this cliché. It seems there was a real intention of making Kpop evolve - or more exactly make it go back to what it was at the time of Seo Taiji and the Boys (see Vox article and this extract from COOLKKADANG EP. 312 (20190522)) - when the boys debuted. Not a purely commercial product but an art with a message. It would thus be important to call BTS a Kpop band because that way they can make the notion of Kpop evolve. The problem is that they redefined the genre so much it can’t really be conceived as K-pop anymore. The boys have also decided to rather focus on just doing their thing rather than being a superhero.

The introduction: 2, 3 방! 탄! 안녕하세요 방탄소년단입니다

BTS introduced themselves through several of their songs. The rap line explained to us how they got into hip-hop in “Skit: Circle Room Talk”, “길” (Road/Path), and later in Dark & Wild’s “힙합성애자” (Hip Hop Lover). You can find more about BTS and their relationship with Hip-Hop in the Socio-political narrative part here.

2 Cool 4 Skool plays its role as the first contact between BTS and the public. “Intro: 2 Cool 4 Skool” explains the goal of the group:

“2 cool 4 skool We tell our story on behalf of those in their 10s and 20s you take that”

The lyrics from “We Are Bulletproof pt.2” present the group and emphasize how they worked harder than anyone before debuting:

“At the practice room instead of school I danced and sang all night While you all played I lived my dream”

“Everywhere I go everything I do I’ll show myself as much as I’ve sharpened the knife All those people who’ve ignored me now Oh oh oh oh oh oh hey shout it out Oh if you’ve done as much as me throw a rock We go hard we’ve got no fear”

And in the first hidden track, “Skit: on the starting line”, RM talks about the feelings he had while he was a trainee.

An idol’s everyday life

BTS has kept us updated on their whereabouts through other songs. While “Skit: Circle Room Talk” and “Outro: Circle Room Cypher” were staged to sound like they were at school, even ending interrupted by the teacher for the skit, “Skit: R U happy now?” is closer to the boys’ idol life as it happens in a car before a fansign. It’s hard to know how much in their skits is scripted or not (RM talked about how they recorded skits in his Vlive about Her here, at 37:10, and said they had no script but they did talk about it beforehand and the recording was later edited) but all the following ones until 화양연화 Pt.2 will be about the boys’ lives as idol: in “Soulmate” they fool around in the studio, in “Expectation!” they want the first place in music shows and in “One night in a strange city”, they bicker after a concert. The last Skits to date are “Billboard Music Awards Speech” and “Skit: 망설임과 두려움” (Hesitation and Fear). The first one is about BTS’ being acknowledged in the US - and basically worldwide - and thus reaching yet another stage in their career while the second is about the doubts they have after reaching such a place.

There are two more songs about their everyday life: “Rain” that express their emotions on a rainy day and “이사” (Moving On), a song about their first dorm and all the memories it holds. It’s the place we see in Rookie King and during the first birthday party, that they left a bit before 화양연화 Pt.1 and “Moving On” were released. They then settled in the one we see in the first Bon Voyage and in the 2015 Festa.

I’ll also quickly mention “Spring Day” here because the lyrics were inspired by the friendship between RM and Suga, the two members that have been together for the longest time - since 2010.

Interestingly all these songs (except “Spring Day”) are focused on a moment: the skits are little sketches while “Rain” and “Moving On” are about a specific emotion they had at a certain time.

Bangtan’s rise

Opposite to those works about one specific episode, there’s a whole other series of songs, this time dedicated to BTS’ constant hard work since pre-debut. Songs by BTS for BTS, songs that help them stay aware of what they’ve accomplished and what their next goals are. It started with the confidence of getting more and more popular in “진격의 방탄 (Rise of Bangtan)” after the success of 2 Cool 4 Skool:

“Who are we? The rising Bulletproof Boy Scouts Who are we? We swallow them all up without fear Cuz we got fire, fire fire Get higher, higher higher If you don’t know us, then take a good look Who are we? Who? The rise of Bangtan”

Then before they’ve realized it, they’re celebrating their second year of activity in Dark & Wild’s “2학년” (2nd Grade):

“In the blink of an eye, I become a second grader The me who only used to chase my dreams now sets fire on the stage”

“Rise of Bangtan” gains a younger sibling in 화양연화 Pt.1 with “흥탄소년단 / Fun Boyz”. Each member has his own part to tell his story and brag about how they’re fun to hang out with, succeeding at remaining friendly while doing so and not sounding full of themselves.

The Most Beautiful Moment in Life has also more serious songs about their hard work, namely “Dope” and “Baepsae”. However, as these songs can also apply to the whole generation BTS belongs to, they’ll be considered in details in the Socio-political narrative part. Same with “Not Today”.

“Never Mind” is in the same vein of “I can and will do it” but with a darker vision:

“NEVER MIND NEVER MIND No matter how thorny the road is, run NEVER MIND NEVER MIND There are lots of things in the world that you can’t help You better NEVER MIND NEVER MIND If you feel like you’re going to crash then accelerate more, you idiot NEVER MIND NEVER MIND We’re too young and immature to give up, you idiot NEVER MIND If you feel like you’re going to crash then accelerate more, you idiot If you feel like you’re going to crash then accelerate more, you idiot NEVER MIND”

“Whalien 52″ brings a sadder note to their journey as they reveal this path is not only hard but also full of loneliness.

They’re also aware the dream will eventually end. “Epilogue: Young Forever” is very realistic about it:

“It can’t be mine forever The applause I say to myself shamelessly Project your voice higher, farther Even though there isn’t an eternal audience I’m going to sing I want to be myself today forever I want to be a young forever”

Yet, it’s not enough to make them give up so they keep singing, they keep believing and thus followed “Outro: Wings”:

I trust myself, Since the reason why my back hurts Is so that wings can sprout I believe me, you, though the beginning may be humble, The future will be prosperous

It’s not stated explicitly but the boys explained in later songs that those wings were given by ARMY. Thus the fans saved the artists that had saved them first.

WINGS also contains a series of solo songs that have been the occasion for most of the boys to look and see where they are now: Jungkook thanks his hyungs for raising him in “Begin”, Jimin misses his innocence in “Lie”, Suga remembers how his love for music started with a brown piano in “First Love”, RM philosophizes about the world in “Reflection” and even hints the thematic of self-love, J-Hope thanks his mother for always supporting him until he succeeded in “Mama” and Jin admits he may never be the best but he’ll still try his hardest in “Awake”. It doesn’t seem “Stigma” has biographical elements, it’s rather centered around the BU story.

The Love Yourself series initiates a whole new reflection that’ll be considered in a future post.

BTS shared a lot with us, be it their convictions, their stories, or their cultures. While they started with the idea of protecting the youth, they’ve eventually evolved in friends of the youth and they renounced to this superhero mission. In the same way, they constantly promise to aim higher and to work harder but they’ve learned to enjoy the present as everything will eventually come to an end.

BTS’ lyrics as Nietzsche’s aphorisms (Part II)

Of all the literary influences that characterize, directly or indirectly, the discography of BTS, Nietzsche – like Schopenhauer and C.G. Jung–, are continuously present in what we could call Bangtan’s world philosophy. The imaginary that surrounds their compositions, of high symbolic and conceptual complexity, establishes relations with the works of universal literature and manages to connect and approach, uniting the educated discourse with the mainstream discourse, an audience of all kinds. For instance, one of those works is Beyond Good and Evil, written by Friederich Nietzsche in 1886. In the aphorisms included in this book (Chapter IV, entitled Maxims and Interludes) we can see to what extent the lyrics of BTS drink from the philosophy of this author, considered one of the most important thinkers of the nineteenth century.

79 · A soul which knows that it is loved but which does not love itself reveals its bottom layers - its deepest stuff comes up.

88 · We begin to mistrust very clever people when they become embarrassed.

Gonna breathe a little slower, cuz my life and my rap, they’re usually too fast (RM, Forever Rain).

89 · Dreadful experiences lead one to wonder whether the person who undergoes them is not something dreadful.

On the other side of the famous idol rapper stands my weak self, it’s a bit dangerous. Depression, OCD, they keep coming back again from time to time. Hell no, perhaps that might be my true self, Damn, huh, feeling estranged in reality, the conflict with ideal, my head hurts (Suga, The Last).

90 · Heavy, melancholy men become lighter precisely through what makes other people heavy, through hate and love, and for a while come to their surface.

I collect myself that's shattered beneath the moonlight. I call you moonchild. We are the children of the moon. I breathe the cold night air: yes, we're livin' and dyin' at the same time (V & RM, 4 O’CLOCK).

91 · So cold, so icy that we burn our fingers on him! Every hand that grasps him pulls back! - And for that very reason some assume he's glowing hot.

Kiss me on the lip, lips. This is a secret between the two of us. I am addicted to the prison that is you, I cannot worship anyone else besides you, I knowingly drank from the poisoned chalice (Blood, Sweat & Tears).

92 · For the sake of his good reputation who has not once - sacrificed himself?

Even if I’m slow I will walk with my own feet, because I know this path is mine to take. Even if I go back, I will reach this path eventually. I never, I will never, I will never lose my dream (Lost).

94 · Maturity in a man: that means having found once again that seriousness which man had as a child, in play.

I don’t have biceps or pecs, I don’t have a super car like Batman, the ideal hero is my fantasy, but all I can give you is Anpan. I’ve dreamed of becoming a hero like Superman, I ran with all my strength, jumping high up in the sky. I’m not afraid of little things like bruising my knees, innocent fantasies of my childhood (Anpanman).

95 · For someone to be ashamed of his immorality: that is a step on the staircase at the end of which he is also ashamed of his morality.

I am still the same person I was before. I am here, the same person I was from before, but an overgrown lie is trying to swallow me whole (Jimin, Lie).

97 · What? A great man? I always see only the actor of his own ideal.

Rappers who act arrogant, my flow job that takes them all and toys around with them. If you try to damage me with simple words like that I only become stronger (Suga, J-Hope, RM & Supreme Boi, Cypher Part 3).

98 · If we train our conscience, it will kiss us at the very moment it bites us.

Yes I hate you, you left me, but I never stopped thinking about you, not even a day. Honestly, I miss you, but I’ll erase you, because it hurts less than to blame you. I try to exhale you in pain, like smoke, like white smoke. I say that I’ll erase you, but I can’t really let you go yet (Spring Day).

99 · The disappointed man speaks: - "I listened for the echo, and I heard only praise -"

Me, a shadow behind the stage. Me, in the depth of darkness. I didn’t want to show everything including my pain, but because I’m still unaccustomed I just wanted to make you smile, I wanted to do good, so thanks. Believing in someone like me, dealing with these tears and wounds, so thanks for becoming my light, for becoming the flower in the most beautiful moment in life (2!3! Still Wishing For More Good Days).

Taken for Granted (pt 3)

As Namjoon closed the door behind him, he stood by the entrance, snickering to himself. “Her? Liking me? Wahh” he said silently to himself. He wasn’t sure what it was he was feeling now, but he couldn’t stop smiling. “As if I’d like her?” he said again to himself.

“Hyung what are you doing by yourself there?” Jungkook asked curiously.

“Huh? Oh nothing” Namjoon said, flustered.

(One week later)

“Hey guys, Y/N isn’t coming today! Looks like it’s just us tonight” Jin said, filling his voice through the dorm.

“Awh, whyyy” Taehyung asked, coming out of the living room.

“She said she’s sick” Jin said with a frown.

“Let’s go there then! We can bring her food” Taehyung said, excitedly.

“Yah, if she’s sick she should just rest. She can’t be taking care of you guys too” Jin scolded.

Taehyung walked back to the living room with his head held down. He was looking forward to watching the movie you two had discussed a few weeks ago, but it looks like it would have to wait another week.

Namjoon meanwhile, listened to everything silently from the dining table. “That’s weird, she never falls sick...” he said to himself.

“What’s that? Couldn’t hear you” Hoseok said, sitting across from him,

“oh, no it’s nothing” Namjoon said.

The rest of the night went by rather slowly. The boys were all off doing their own things, and to Namjoon it felt so wrong. Usually, they would all be huddled in their living room, watching random movies. He always thought that he was forced to join them because he couldn’t have cared less for the movie nights, but before he realized it himself, he found himself finishing up work early and setting aside time each movie night. Instead, now the time was filled with silence whereas it was usually filled with your giggles and comments about the movies. It felt wrong.

Aish, who cares. Now I can work on the album a bit more now. It’s good to have this time to myself instead of a stupid movie. But he couldn’t get anything done. He was too distracted with his own thoughts

(4 days later)

“I guess she’s not coming” Yoongi said as he places his phone back on the table. Namjoon looks at him, surprised.

“What?! Why? Did you tell her it was cypher?” Hoseok asked.

“Yeah, she figured it was cypher. She just said she’s been busy with work” Yoongi said with a sigh.

“wahh, she really must be busy if she turned down Cypher. Aren’t they overworking our girl though” Hoseok said with a huff.

“Speaking of work, she said she’s not coming to movie night again. She’s been stressed with work...I’m kinda worried” Yoongi said.

“Wait what, she’s skipping two weeks in a row? That’s uncalled for. We’ve known her for what, 4 years? She’s never skipped two weeks in a row” Hoseok said, eyes wide.

“Yeah I know” Yoongi said, looking back to his laptop.

“Ok, well we can’t just sit here and wait for her. We’re just wasting time, lets just get on with it” Namjoon said, annoyed.

It’s true, you never really missed movie night unless the boys had a schedule to attend to or if they were on tour. But if was never you canceling plans first. Over the last four years, the boys had called you in to the studio multiple times, asking you to listen to the tracks and provide any input you could think of. Namjoon always played it off, not really caring for your feedback. But somehow, your words stuck in his mind and without even thinking about it, he would go back and edit the tracks according to what you said. And he couldn’t help but snicker when he saw you smile when you heard the changes yourself when the albums had come out. In fact, he even had a little notes page pulled up on his laptop, hoping to write down all your feedback secretly. But instead, you weren’t going show and he closed his laptop angrily.

“Woah, calm down Joon” Hoseok said, noticing Namjoon’s sudden mood.

“Lets just keep editing and do the best we can.” Namjoon said, going back to working on the desktop.

Namjoon was frustrated, but he couldn’t really understand why. You were never one to turn them down, which at first he thought it was annoying because it made it seem like you didn’t have anything better to do. But now you were backing out of plans left and right. And he didn’t understand why he was upset by the fact.

How stressed must she be at work? Can’t even coming for movie night again? Is she being overworked?

(two weeks later)

You finally got the courage to go back and face the boys. You decided to drown yourself in work and try to forget about your feelings. In fact, the hard work was paying off as word got around that you were being considered as the temporary replacement for one of GOT7′s manager who was going on paternity leave for a few months. You were excited for the opportunity, but nothing was set in stone.

You managed to convince yourself that you could no longer pine over Namjoon, especially when he made it clear that he had no feelings for you whatsoever. When he laughed at you, you were beyond hurt. But after those feelings dimmed down, it was replaced with anger. How could he just laugh at your feelings like that? Maybe he wasn’t as great as you made him out to be. You told yourself to get over him and get over him quickly. You couldn’t avoid him forever, because that would mean avoiding the other boys and you just couldn’t do that to yourself or them. So with heavy steps, you made your way to their dorm once again, hoping to surprise the boys. They greeted you eagerly at the door, hugging you even. Luckily, Namjoon had stepped out to the studio for a bit and was going to be late

As soon as Namjoon opened the door, he noticed a pair of familiar white sneakers near the door. He immediately thought of you, but the boys never mentioned you coming over today. He just thought you were busy again. But then he heard it.

He heard your laugh and small giggles. The sound filled the dorm, along with the laughter with the rest of the boys. He could smell the food Jin was making and Namjoon couldn’t help but smile, just staring at the shoes. He didn’t know why he felt the way he did, but he felt like the thing that was missing this past month was finally back.

He walked towards the living room slowly, his eyes immediately landing on you standing by the dining room table on the phone. Your back was faced towards him and he could see you keep nodding your head as if the person on the other end of the line could see you. Before hanging up though, you did somewhat of a little happy dance, jumping up and down in excitement. Before he knew it, Namjoon had started walking towards you. He pulled out a chair at the end of the table quietly, setting down his stuff. His senses were immediately filled with both the smell of Jin’s cooking and your sweet shampoo. Both smells mixed together was rather strange, but Namjoon loved it and maybe he was starting to realize how much he missed it.

Pretending to grab a glass of water from the table, Namjoon walked up to your side. You jumped a little when you saw him stand beside you, not aware that he returned home.

“Hey” he said with a small smile and looked directly into. He expected you to do that thing you had always done in the past. You would give him your biggest smile and ask him how his day was and what he’s been up to. How the album was coming along. Just anything to get him to talk to you.

Instead, you looked up at him with an empty expression. You gave him a small smile, as if to simply acknowledge his presence. You nodded ever so slightly and looked back at your phone, locking it. You tucked your phone back into your back pocket and walked back to the boys, without uttering a single word.

Namjoon stood there frozen for a second and stared at the empty space where you were just standing seconds before, shocked with the recent encounter. He turned back to look at you walk to the guys, continuing the previous conversation and laughing along with them. Some of the boys gave him a concerned expression, nothing the strange behavior from both him and you.

Namjoon couldn’t help but feel sad. Why isn’t she acknowledging me?

He anxiously went and sat in the living room with everyone else, sitting directly across you. But as the conversation went on, not once did you look up at him. Even when he was speaking, you looked everywhere else but him and it was driving him nuts.

“Oh yeah, who were you on the phone with earlier?” asked Jin.

“Oh!” you squeaked, garnering a laugh from the group. “That was work! One of the manager sunbaes is taking a few months off for paternity leave and they’re having me fill in while he’s gone. It’s a good opportunity to show my potential I guess!” you say, excitedly.

“Y/N that’s great! What group are you going to be working with?” Hoseok asks.

“Got7!” you reply.

“Hey! We’re good friends with them~ You just let us know if they’re ever giving you a hard time” Jungkooks says. You giggle at his expression.

“Yeah, Jackson told me they’re getting ready for a comeback soon?” Namjoon says, looking at you. You had no choice but to answer back to him as all eyes were on you.

You smile awkwardly at him and just mumble a yeah.

“Wait a comeback? That means you’re going to be quite busy then...” Jimin says, concerned.

“Yeah..I guess I didn’t really think about it. If I’m right, your comebacks are just a few weeks apart, so I guess I’ll be seeing you guys backstage at music shows and stuff, but apart from that, I don’t know how often I’ll get to see you” You say, genuinely sad.

“What!! no more movie nights?!” Taehyung asks loudly.

“Yah, we have our own comeback to focus on!” Yoongi says, slapping the back of Taehyung’s head.

“Oh...right” Taehyung mumbles, rubbing the back of his head and sticking his tongue out at Yoongi, earning him another smack.

“Well, I think I’m going to go ahead and go..” you say, starting to stand up.

“Wait, you just got here! We didn’t even eat or watch a movie yet!” Jungkook says.

“I just wanted to surprise you guys since It’s been a while since I’ve seen you,” you say back. You face Namjoon intentionally for the first time the entire night as you say “I don’t want to intrude or be a burden” as he meets your eyes. There’s something about his expression that you can’t quite read and it’s something he’s never quite shown to you. But you push your thoughts away and grab your purse and jacket placed neatly near the sofa.

“You’re not a burden! Why would you say that?” Jimin asks.

“I mean, I did stop by unannounced. And as much as I want to eat Jin’s food, I think I have a lot to prepare for work” You say as you put on your coat.

“So..when will we see you next?” Hoseok asks.

“Ah, Oppa I’m not sure..” you say, sadly.

“That's fine. I’m proud of you for working your way up. And we’ll see you around at music shows soon I guess. And Y/N, please take care of your health too, that’s the most important” Jin says like the mother he is.

“Ah of course, oppa,i’ll” You say as you give him a side hug.

“And make sure you listen to our album! Don’t forget us now that you have a new group to take care of!” Yoongi says while laughing.

“How could I ever forget you guys. I I'llbe the first one to listen to the album as soon as it’s out. I even have the reminder up on my phone!” You say, giggling.

You made your way to the door as the boys followed suit. You put on your favorite white sneakers and opened the door, only to see in your peripheral vision that Namjoon was putting on his shoes as well.

“Hyung, you going somewhere?” asks Taehyung

“Yeah, need to get the mail”, he says, looking at you.

You swallow the lump in your throat that you didn’t know was there. The boys send you off, promising to see you soon and telling you to keep in touch frequently.

You walk slightly ahead of Namjoon, only for him to catch up to you at the elevator door. You can feel his eyes on you, and it took everything not to turn around. You prayed that someone else was in the elevator, but to your luck, there was absolutely no one. You even considered taking the stairs, but they were about 12 stories up and you didn’t want to do that to yourself and seem petty.

The elevator ride was painful to say the least. You just stood there like a statue, and by the time the elevator got down to the 8th floor, you pulled out your phone and started texting a friend to seem busy.

Namjoon meanwhile kept fidgeting near you. He didn’t really care for the mail, and he felt like you owed him some kind of a conversation.

“So.... you excited for the job?” He asks you nervously.

You turn to him, not expecting him to talk to you again. You simple nod “Yes” and turn back to your phone.

“How long are you filling in for?” He asks again, hoping to earn more of ar reply.

“3 Months” you say, this time not even bothering to look back at him when you replied.

Namjoon opened his mouth to try and say something, but he knew it was useless. You weren’t going to reply with the same enthusiasm as you always had.

As soon as the elevator door opened, you both tried to walk out at the same time. Instead, you ended up bumping into eachother and you quickly recoiled your hand away, as if he burned you. He didn’t like your reaction one bit.

He let you go first and watched you walk in front of him. You fumbled for your keys in your purse as you kept walking. “So, I’ll see you around I guess?” Namjoon finally says, as he realizes you were almost at your car.

You turn to face him and give him a look of confusion. “yeah” was all you could say. You turn around and walk to your car, quickly getting in and driving away. Namjoon watched as your car drove out of the parking lot, and he felt his heart tighten a bit.

“What the hell is going on?” He says aloud to himself. “Didn’t she like me? Or was I wrong?” he continues.

How was the concert? Did you have fun? Tell me all the juicy bits how are they live? I'm sure I'll never see them cause Bighit hates Europe and I'm even more sure that if they do come they don't know abt Eastern Europe so I still won't be able to go :/

Dude.... It was amazing. And I really hope European ARMY gets to experience it some time soon! It was a really different experience from the TRB Dallas, mostly because I was so much closer last time, but this time I was p2 and I got to see all the choreo and shit but I was still close enough to feel close and it was just.... amazing. I want to write up a full fan account later but right now I’m just gonna list the top things I remember about each of the boys:

Kook: God. His solo stage was fucking remarkable. His footwork his voice his moves just. He is such an entertainer, he’s so superhuman. We had pretty good view of his thigh girth from our seats and it, too, was remarkable.... Jenny’s words, not mine..... He also followed Jin’s lead and stole an army bomb, but instead of sweetly returning it like Jin, he pretended to drop it like a little imp butt because he’s a fucking imp butt. When Jimin said “Did you like it?” his little “I liked it” was the cutest thing I have ever heard and I squealed and fell to the floor, he is just precious and talented and adorable. A complete dork, the hottest dork.

Yoongi: Um just like fucking fire. Just. fire. His Cypher verse was immaculate, I’m talking full virgin birth immaculate, and his solo stage was fucking POWERFUL man. It was so emotional and powerful and I was like legit moved by him. He also dropped it low. He is so tiny and so beautiful and so fucking talented it hurts me. Fun fact: my little sister got drenched in Father Yoongi’s holy water during Cypher.

Jin: Stunning. Charismatic. Hilarious. Talented. His solo was another world man. I think he actually had my favorite voice live?? Which I wasn’t expecting because last time it was Baby J but..... wow. Fucking stunning. He blew at least 4 kisses and stole 2 army bombs, one regular one, then one pink one when we did the rainbow ocean. He looked so polite and charming when he was asking the girl for them. He just looked happy and carefree and UGH just perfect.

Taehyung: SHIT MAN HIS HIGH NOTES that’s right, this deep subterranean voiced motherfucker was SLAYING HIS FUCKING high notes during his solo like WOW it was better live than you can imagine. Probably the best high notes of the concert. And it seemed like he was throwing some extra ones in there. He also LOVED to tease the crowd, like squat down and make cute faces at the fans. His charisma while dancing was off the charts, he goes from zero to too intense in 1 sec flat. There were eyebrows.

Jimin: It’s really hard to understand the POWER in his dance until you see it live. He is..... he’s something else. His every move, every pause, every breath is just brimming with potential energy, he THROWS himself into the dances, you’ve never seen anything like it. He is a born performer. Even when he’s not dancing or singing, he’s performing. His voice is so clear and lovely. He started the concert with his hair all nicely combed down like a nice little fringe but by the end, he had done that thing where he ran his fingers through it to the point where it was off his forehead. He did this thing where he liked to gaze off all seriously into the crowd and probably give some poor fan a heart attack by looking straight into their souls. Rude as shit, always found a way to make every move a little bit nasty. Perfect, stunning, small.

Hobi: .... I could not take my eyes off of him. I could not. First of all not only is he the most beautiful person I have ever seen in front of my eyes, but he is just..... his on-stage charisma is second to none. When he’s dancing, he’s still engaging the audience, he’s smiling, he’s just.... fuck I don’t even know how to describe it. He draws you in. He is by far, for me, the most comprehensively amazing live performer. His singing? Fucking amazing. Mama killed me. It was perfect. He knows how to work an audience, man. Ruder than Jimin even, always throwing in extra little rolls and thrusts, but you can’t even be mad at him, because he is HUMAN SUNSHINE and you know what I know we call him that all the time, I know that’s like his thing, but at this concert, I felt it, I felt happier just looking at him. I can’t... describe him. He’s just. The closest thing to magic that this dreary world has to offer.

Namjoon: I...... I don’t even really know.... how to articulate.... any of this. Full disclosure I have been having a slow motion Kim Namjoon meltdown since summer 2015 but... this concert was the culmination of all of that. Arguably the most emotional moment of the concert was his solo stage. And listen, I was not even a huge fan of Reflection before this, like it was great and all but it was one of the ones I skipped over on the album. But he... jesus he just. He fucking felt this shit. He felt what he was saying, and I felt it, and every time he said ‘I wish I could love myself,’ the crowd shouted ‘we love you’ and fuck i have never felt so bonded with that many thousands of fucking people. It was this giant cohesive emotional moment and it was transcendent. I’m pretty sure he also found a way to make the rainbow crowd like a statement about racial equality, just the most philosophical beautiful asshole you’ve ever met. When the crowd got rowdy and people were getting hurt, he stopped everything and said, “no pushing please, safety is the most important thing” and would not proceed until there was order. He talked to the crowd like he was talking to friends, he was never full of himself or condescending, despite their immense undeniable success, like he was just so genuine and thankful, and as soon as he walked off that stage, I immediately missed him. He has utterly ruined human beings for me and I am honestly so fucked.

1. i like it (slow jam remix) // alright, listen. this song is the song that got me into them.. jk i lied, the original i like it is what got me into them ((& min yoongi)) i absolutely love and adore that song & the fact that it was on their debut ep 2 cool 4 skool makes me extremely emotional. the song feels like how it feels to have a crush on someone//the feeling when ur crush gets taken//when ur man who isnt ur man but still ur man gets swooped lol u get what im saying but when they came out w the slow jam remix on their repackaged skool luv affair ep i was all over that. overall this was the song that got me into them & the reason why i started to stan yoongi so much LOL (i can go on so much more but ill stop here bc long).

2. autumn leaves // the lyrics, the instrumentals + beats, the arrangement, the emotion. ((do u ever wonder what the song would sound like if yoongi kept the original track that was produced because me too)) the @3:31 part u know that part got me im a sucker for songs where the music stops + the vocals are there&present&strong its a small drop & beat but i feel it in my chest u know?

3. hold me tight // this song gets me feeling like some boy broke my heart & got me crying in the club u know. the harmony between yoongi + jungkook and all the goddamn emotion in the entire song. yoongis part @3:26 like the lyrics got me so bad+you already know how i feel about songs where the music gets all subtle and the vocals are loud im so emotional i know i keep saying that but wow im so simp rn at 2:13am ((mar did this to hurt me))

4. EPILOGUE: young forever // oooOOOOOOOooo boii u know this song gets me so emotional it feels like the summer of 2016 #blorange had dreams to be big & all i knew were the feelings i wanted to achieve in life “dreams, hopes, forward, forward” fr got me in my feels so damn much (im crying) anyways this song could probably beat hold me tight maybe not. this is a song you feel entirely.

5. whalien 52 // i was so obsessed with this song when the most beautiful moment in life pt.2 came out trust me i read about the 52 hertz whale before the song came out & when i saw the title of it when the tracklist dropped best believe my heart tugged a lil or something. the fact you can hear a high pitch in the song&that its supposed to mimic/serve as the 52 hertz whale’s frequency when they sing the words “lonely whale” makes me feel so strongly for this song like bts did that.

6. coffee // i dont drink coffee but this song makes me want to drink it lol the song talks about the scent of whoever theyre singing about& i even though i dont drink coffee i deadass love the smell of it. the song feels like early mornings im talking early mornings where the sun is barely rising and the sky is really pretty. yeah, it feels like that.

7. BTS cypher, pt.3: KILLER // the most lit song ever fr always gets me in such a hype mood plus just the fact tae deadass loves this song with all his heart makes me cry ((the bangtan bomb where he practiced it/performed it and gets so lit only for yoongi to swoop in for his part+taes hurt face gets me all the time i love taegi. my favorite of the cyphers (though pt. 4 is a close one)

8. a supplementary story: you never walk alone // the beats are something i live for the lyrics make me emotional. deadass makes me think about #blorange + how much life has to offer. it makes me feel good + makes me feel like living if u know who i am in real life u know this is the song i do my slut drops to drop ur weapons?? nah im droppin myself if u know what i mean LMAO (yoongis part in the beginning is something i want on repeat for the rest of my life & the words he says at the end is something i want to hear in my ear every day for the rest of my life) the vcr for this song at the concert hella got me emotional (but honestly what doesnt make me emotional)

9. 2! 3! (still wishing for better days) // a song full of bts emotions about their fans, for their fans. the lyrics are amazing & this song is a pick me up song feels like a rainy day but one of those rainy days where you feel good you know kinda feels like being wrapped in a blanket in the winter the part @2:33 is where the entire crowd started to sing at the concert and i was just living it. grateful for this song & i just like to think that this is what bts feels for their fans.

10. spring day // honestly i was so blessed to hear/see this performance live the ohs at the end of the song + when the crowd sang along made me so emotional at the concert its something i was fr blessed to experience/feel & a reason why this song is listed on this list the lyrics are also probably one of my favorite lyrics of any bts song. they really did it with this one ((yoongi in the mv rt if u understand)) ((jhope should always sing the parts he sings live srrynotsrry))

Stephanie would give you a reporting on her BTS experience but she’s dead. Totes dead. Killed by Kpop. Time of death, Friday, March 24th, approximately 8.30 pm. She died happy. May God have mercy on her pervy noona soul.

After meeting up with all factions of the Kpop Nerd Herd, we gathered at a Biergarten outside the Prudential Center–because apparently, pregaming kpop is a thing. Also, get this! The doors to the concert actually opened at 5.30! Holy smokes. Usually, my biggest complaint to kpop concerts is the fact that they are still loading in guests way past the time when the concert is supposed to start causing us, even with seated tickets, to have to get there way early in order to make sure we don’t miss anything. This time, nope, we walked through the doors, right through security and directly to our seats, not a single line to be waited in. It was a close second part of the evening. (First part of course, being anything having to do with BTS.)

As we all bought out tickets separately, we were all seated in various areas in the arena. I was by myself in section 7. Turns out 7 was one of the better sections of the group, beaten out only by Alexis who lucked out with P1 with sound check. Alexis who got in line, with her tent and sleeping bag, at 3am. Gads! I’d say that was crazy, but she got close, really close. Close enough to have full on Alexis/Jungkook interaction. I’m dead? I’m guessing she’s probably headed to the plot next to me.

I get to my SEAT, last to fill in the row, seated next to a J-HOPE and a Rap Monster bias. Not a bad place to be. My seat was right at the corner of the stage extension. The crowd screamed their excitement with every change of the monitors with their music video rotation. You know, because we kpop fans have no chill. We are like the anti chill. Eternally grateful they either allowed my camera in or didn’t find it in my bag, as my phone battery situation was scary–could you imagine what a sad, sad fangirl I would be if I came out of that thing without photographic proof I was there? Nope. Hellz nope.

Soon (as I really slipped in just moments before the show started) the lights darkened and due to my corner seat, I could literally see that all that separated us from BTS was a thin curtain. Yes, me and my (Let’s just come out and admit it) hands down favorite band were in the same country, the same state, zip code, building, room, we were breathing the same air. It’s a heady experience.

Then the curtain was gone. And there they were. Thank goodness I did have the camera as my memory of the thing is a hazy mess of happiness, fangirl squeeeeing, and BTS sweat.

After a disastrous attempt at video-chatting the experience with the McFeeleys (damn you, cell service at the Prudential Center!) It was just me and the boys…and like 13000 other screaming fans.

Now. I’m not one of those girls who like any sort of sneak peak of what’s going to happen at a concert. I avoid set lists. I run and way from fan cams. I feel like the surprise is part of the experience. This one going in though, especially since several members of the herd went to both nights, there were some details I was unable to avoid.

From the escaped set list, I knew everyone did a solo from the Wings album. I wasn’t really looking forward to this as I haven’t really listened to the wings album and I am under the assumption that I don’t like them, preferring my BTS as a whole rather than pieces. I knew, from Regina, that the costumes were made from lots of velvet, lots of sparkles.

Hrmmm…. BTS in sparkles? In velvet? And finally, I learned that they had some sound issues the first night where the background music was louder than the voices, which I wanted to believe that they would have fixed the second night around. Second-night people! When possible, always choose night two. Wait. Unless this would make it harder for me to get tickets to night two in which case, woah, first night, first night is the bomb! Get ’em fresh! Jet lag is sexy!

So, that being said, they sang the first one, being awesome of course, but then, since I was trying to live chat, I missed a good portion of it. However. The next song? BLEW MY EVER LOVIN’ BTS FANGRRRL MIND. What was it? Bapsae! Gah! I love this song so much, and not only that but, though I’m not really a ‘ooh look at that dance’ person, I’m all, look at that dance! This is the one song I honestly didn’t think that they would play, and I was literally sad that I’d never get to see them perform that awesome song and adorable dance in person. But I was wrong!!! They played it. It was awesome. The only thing was I couldn’t decide between video and photo so I basically put both down and just jammed out. Screaming my head off of course, but still jamming. If only they’d played it on the extended stage, it would have been perfect.

Side note. Just lost a massive amount of post due to a faulty save draft button. Endeavoring to continue. Harumph.

So. Unlike other bands that had multiple stages ahemBigbangahem BTS actually spent a fair amount of time on both stages, which made me–and the Rap Monster bias next to me very happy. Every time we caught sight of that front stage trap door opening, it was arm thumping and squeeeeing. This was also good because of their lighting choices made it so that anytime they were on the back stage, all video evidence of them were just white glowing orbs of happiness and gyrations.

Also, you’ll notice my photos are a little Rap Monster and J-HOPE heavy. This was not an artistic choice. Okay. So maybe it was a bit. I couldn’t help myself. However, in my defense, they did spend a great deal of time on my side of the stage. It was almost like they knew and wanted to hang out with me. Plus I was egged on by the realization that I would make some of the members of our crew very happy documenting a little J-Hope. I wasn’t wrong.

Now. As I mentioned before, I did actually know they would be performing their solo stuff, and I have to admit it, I’m not the hugest fan, even after seeing them performed live. They aren’t terrible, they just, to me, aren’t very memorable. Except maybe Hobi’s song? Was he the one who sang about his mom? Oh, and Rap Monster when we all shouted that we loved him because his song is about not loving himself or something? Maybe if I give the songs more of a listen I’ll come to appreciate them more.

Another song I kind of wished I’d been prepared for? Because I kind of lost my shit? Cypher 4. Holy fudge guys. I always meant to write a post on this song as, though I refused to listen to Wings, I do have it on my phone and one day I was on the train, heard this mind-blowingly awesome song that immediately hooked me in–turns out it was Cypher 4.

Gah! I love this song. To see the rap line out there all sexy strutting and growls it was flat-out amazeballs. There is really no other word to describe it. The jackets they wore. The saunters. The interaction. Not kidding, if they ever decided to eventually do a rap line sub unit, I would be all in.

We should now probably talk about their costumes. Regina was right. They were heavy on the velvet, heavy on the sparkles, which is just weird, isn’t it? Thinking of their past concepts? Comparing BTS image from now to the little wannabe thug bunnies they first debuted as? Even their solo stuff was bedazzled.

My favorites, of course, will have to be the long robes that the rap line wore for the Cypher, but also the red knitted outfits they wore when they first came to the front stage. Jimin in that oversized red sweater?

Although everything was so oversized and layered it looked a bit like the outfits were actually eating the band. But who can blame them? Nom, Nom, Nom baby. The costume that did not go over well? Hands down would have to be what the KPNH referred to as the pink pearled Jackie O jackets. Seriously? What were they thinking? Whoever came up with that concept should probably…not be allowed to do that again.

The stages itself was pretty simple, no fuss, no big show, the most they had were a few rising pillars in the back

and what appeared to be a glass phone booth that Rap Monster went into at the end of his performance and…I want to say Taehyung came out of at the beginning of his?

Hoseok had a chair, Yoongi an upright piano, but all in all, it was pretty minimal. They did have some backup dancers, but they were fairly unnecessary, really it just distracted from the main event rather than added to it–with the exception of the time that they lifted Jimin–that was pretty freaking cool. Go Jimin, go.

I think it showed that you really you could just have a great performance be a great performance. It’s like when good singers use autotune. Why? It certainly doesn’t add anything. And why bother with the expense?

There was a fun thing that they did at the end with the light sticks. The venue handed out colored bags that you could put your light stick in (the JHope fan grabbed me one and told me I could just use it with my cell phone battery–I totally would have if I hadn’t already run out of battery.) They handed out each section a color, so that at the encore when they boys came out again, the stadium would be lit up like a rainbow. That was pretty nice.

Rap Monster talked about how all colors could enjoy their music–or something like that–I was pretty much a wreck at that point, so I may have missed his meaning.

Hands down this was one of the best concerts I’ve been to. Not just because the guys were there performing their asses off, but also knowing that I was there with almost all of my friends (shout out Cherry Cordial! Have fun at your concert soon!) were there in the stadium with me.

Knowing we were all having the same experience, knowing how much each and every one of us love this band, knowing that after this we would all get together and talk and squeee and laugh over the whole thing? Yeah, that’s what pushed the night over the edge for me and I will really never, ever forget it.
