played the game ok boomer at my family party today, ended up explaining to a room of ~20 of my relatives what fanfiction is so they could understand the question, “in fanfiction, what does AU stand for?”. and then the card’s definition of “AU” was wrong so i also had to get into the concept of “canon”.

can u believe. in front of my whole family. a room full of people, aged 3 to 80. all staring at me intently as i explain the difference between an alternate universe and canon divergence. at one point my mom was like “daina i think we get it” and a cousin and two aunts were like “wait no we’re interested please continue” and i had to say to my own mother in front of god and my i am kenough sweatshirt “sorry but unlike you the rest of them DON’T have to listen to me talk about fanfiction on the regular”. my uncle is a retired judge. my one cousin worked for the federal government in a job that was so classified that for years he literally couldn’t legally tell us about ANYTHING he was working on. and today those men sat and patiently listened to me define “coffee shop AU”.

also, not one, not two, but THREE of the answers for the young folks, i knew solely because they were either plot points on stranger things or they were things i found out whilst reading stranger things fanfics. and then i was the only person in our age bracket (10 people, ranging from ages 9 to 42) that knew who anne rice was, and had to explain yet again that the reason i had this knowledge was because… fanfic.

it was surreal. also my aunt, aged 68, may or may not begin attempting to read fanfic now because, according to her, “there are so many stories where there are these small side characters and i’d just KILL to hear their backstory or like what was going through their minds during the main action!” i’m very happy for her. today was wild.

#d speaks #the things i knew because of stranger things: who ripped a bats head off on stage. what year the challenger exploded. the ghostbusters theme #in case ur curious the way the game worked is there was a set of questions for people born pre 1980 and a set of questions for people born #post 1980 and you split into the two teams and you take turns reading trivia questions to each other #the questions for the young ppl were things like above - who wrote interview w a vampire #what year did the challenger explode. who are the fab four. true or false elvis had a twin.#the questions for the old people were like: what does BAE stand for. in fanfiction what’s an AU. who won the first american idol.#it was a weird game but very educational #and funny to play with my little cousins because as i said anywhere from 2-4 of them are gen alpha depending on how u define it #so it was very interesting to see what sorts of things have been passed down culturally and what sorts of things stayed solely in their time #it was sort of reminiscent of are you smarter than a fifth grader in some ways #also no one asked but. the teams were:#old team: 4 solid boomers. 3 boomer/gen x cuspers. 3 gen x’ers.#young team: 2 xennial cusps. 2 millennials. 1 zillennial cusp. 1 zoomer. 2 zalpha cusp. 2 gen alphas #and then also our 3 year old cousin who technically is gen alpha but he was more moral support than anything you understand #though at one point he DID declare that he wanted to play - picked up a card and ‘read’:#‘santa comes he eats the milk and cookies. poop goes in the potty’ in the EXACT cadence of someone asking a trivia question lmfao #love that kid. he also told me a few knock knock jokes #mainly they were like. knock knock. who’s there. candy cane. candy cane who. candy cane on your head!!!!!!!!#a true comedic genius that boy

dick's relationship with bruce + the titans too-long meta

there's been so many of these but i have many thoughts on this subject!!! dick's two biggest allegiances are to the batfa.m and to the titan.s and the two simply do not vibe (with pictures!).

for the most part, i feel like (at least in team settings) the titans are pretty vocal about not being batstans and bruce in kind has never put a 'proud parent of a teen titan' bumper sticker on the batmobile. like i feel like there's so many examples of:

i also think both sides thinks dick goes too easy on the other. that dick will always give batman the benefit of the doubt, and he will always answer a titans call. like the titans are constantly grilling dick about why he would listen to batman:

and batman thinks the titans focus too much on the power of friendship:

& i personally do think its a dash of 'what do you mean you're adults you were twelve yesterday'. like all the titans are the original sidekicks to most of the JL, and generally speaking the firsts of their mantle's so i do think there's a dash of parental caution at letting your newly adult kid do whatever they want with their friends. especially considering its not like theyre working at safety & gentle work emporium theyre all vigilantes/heroes and their missions are often life or death. they also are very excessive about each other and would absolutely kill or die for each other given very little prompting (ex: wally literally turned back time and revived dick grayson, thereby killing himself in this very issue). and the titans cannot go a single run without saying 'we didn't create a team... we created a family' and saying shit like:

when they are also (often) the JLs family. But especially in younger years, like the titans were dicks main reason for ever leaving gotham. and in early years robin, dick's sole focus was gotham, bruce and robin. & they worked so well together, dynamic duo who became such a cohesive unit and spent every waking moment together in some capacity (and often enjoyed that time very much)

but once the titans started to meet his duties split and like any teenage kid he found himself wanting to just hang out with his friends rather than his dad sometimes. and dick was so lonely in the early years and naturally sociable that finding other kids who could relate was so important to him. & i just think there's no doubt the titans were the rift that caused b&r to end. at the very least the timeline was sped up by the titans because dick was the youngest of the OG 5 and watched them all break off into their own adult selves and being the first active sidekick i think dick started thinking if they can be adults, can no longer be someone's #2... why can't i? and considering the titans were older than him, dick had several places to land or look for comfort or reassurance in his friends who seemed to have it together more than seventeen year old him. and bruce pushing him away (whole meta on that later) and dick seeing everyone else age out of their sidekick roles, led to stuff like:

and don't get me wrong, no matter the age, i think dick values very few other opinions than batman's. like titans (2016) broke apart because bruce was disappointed in dicks leadership and eventually convinced him wally & donna needed extra supervision (context: wallys heart problems & troia). also, dick rarely leaves things out of reports so im sure bruce saw that /technically speaking/ both dick (bruces son who he is not normal about) and wally died on this mission. but the titans didn't back down:

i also think the titans really respect dick's leadership, and they rarely (if ever) take well to anyone outside the titans shittalking dick grayson (sidenote -- specific titans can do it all they want because they have been a long time dg stan sufferer(TM) but outside of the team it rarely goes over well). but anyway, only dick could convince the titans to not fight this (much) and only bruce could convince dick:

so when dick stopped fighting it and agreed with the JL i feel like it was obvious bruce influenced that.

AND i think super important is that batman/most of the titans aren't super close so all they hear about each other is through dick. and dick can be emotionally intelligent, but he can also be unreasonably secretive. so every time bruce and dick fight or like, those big moments like dick's firing, or kicking dick out of the mansion after jason's death or like any of their big, shocking fights its like dick coming to the titans at his lowest. and because he places so much self worth on bruces opinion on him, i feel like that in turn might make the titans dick does run to in those moments (donna, roy, wally, etc.) resentful because he doesn't always go back into how or why they made up, when they always do.

but anyway all that to say this wouldn't be a problem if dick didn't love them both SO MUCH like:

#LIKE the point of this is that dick loves bruce and loves the titan.s but he's always always letting someone down by doing both #dick says 'so the titan.s think---' and b rolls his eyes and dick says 'so bman thinks---' and the titan.s boo #dick: 🧍#also this narrative that the titan.s are scared of bruce is simply not true #i feel like theyve all individually told b to fuck off at least once a titan.s run #but on the same note i dont think bruce doesnt like the titan.s like he works with individuals from the team all the time #but as a group my interpretation is that he thinks the titan.s will always put each other/friendship above anything else #and even that can just be reckless and regardless of age i think b is very protective of his kids (his eldest included)#but anyways its funny how most of the ones that actually confront dick about it are kory roy and occasionally wally #dicks emotional support redheads show no mercy #anyway theres a lot more to the titan.s/bruce that just doesnt even include dick but alas i am a dg rper. likely place for dg content to be #* meta #* long post

#zero escape #zero time dilemma #ztd #akane kurashiki #zero escape spoilers #just in case #blood cw #I am so obsessed with this rewrite you guys have no idea #so much work was clearly put into it and it's the author's main project atm so please check it out and support them!#but okay so coolest things about this fic for me is how it's structured just like the game with fragments and it's interactive!#there's voting every other week on what fragment to go next or what decision to make #other awesome stuff is Akane being the pov and teams rotating instead of it being only the same fixed three that can interact w each other #it's pretty cool to see interactions that we all sort of expected to happen from vlr like akane and sigma that just. never did #also Aoi's there :3 and I'm loving everyone's characterization so far it's really down to how I imagine them too like super close #the sibling bonding stuff absolutely kills me it's so genuine and cute #but also it's just as brutal as ztd already is so that's. what inspired this I guess #but I like this though like there is Such weight to it when it happens and there's some lines that absolutely never leaving my brain #Akane also actually Has issues™ with stuff that she should have issues with. i.e fire and doctors #oh and they actually explore the thing about the Kurashikis parents too #and oh yeah there's some cast changes. Upon seeing the post about second as iida my first thought was and third can be uraraka then I noticed you had the same idea in the tags

Great minds think alike I just think that's what she deserves,,,trio holders to the original trio babeyyy

#*while making a chart* third's lack of familial care meant he had to find his own in group and eventually meant supporting his leader #where later uraraka was raised with love that she would go as far for her parents as third originally would have gone for second #and still is inclined by nature to a supportive role- she has no great aspirations on leadership or power itself but in how she can help #other heroes (where previously how to help a ragtag freedom fighter group)#*continuing to make a chart* now Second's influence on Izuku could link to that early acceptance of 'yeah world isn't fair'#and i see a link in how Second really took apart his minor speed quirk to do more with it and Izuku's general quirk analysis and hacking #but where Second was mistreated as a threat Izuku was seen as a lack of one and someone to pittied even by those who looked him #which influence the way they react to said injustice though both are moving without thinking to do Something about it #(second having support of a group and Izuku very much not is the deciding factor between Izuku not going with the spider plan methinks)#and i think second + third having teamed up first like how Izuku + Uraraka met first is a good parallel with how Tenya is initially #antagonistic to Izuku but ends up joining both quickly when actual opportunity arises and he sees good things from them #and as Yoichi's somewhat black and white morality did develope somewhat specifically to oppose a terrible brother‚(i gotta finish that fic #where i go more into how they pushed each other more extreme to try to shut down loopholes) Tenya's developed in a way both supported by and #to support a great older brother which is why murder is a hundred percent ok if it's for tensei's sake #and this can be expressed by their different aproaches to making their hair look very different from or very similar to their brothers #speaking of hair that chapter where Uraraka did #a ponytail that spiked upwards? and third's hair? i see it #just as i see a connection when it comes to how she grapples and redirects enemy momentum to the fa jin power and connected combat style #also second scar = Izuku's ofa activation and tbh both could not care less about what their hair is doing dhfhfjgg #plus something about Izuku's 'gotta give ofa away' mode we joke about activating and Second's specific disapproval of him #man that self esteem deficiency sure can spread across more than one lifetime!#and of course. hands.#hands in the vault. tenya returning the favor to grab Izuku's #though the next step is to wonder about fourth but i do have an idea. wonder if we're on the same track about it again #pocket talks to people #anon

Despite Danny's best efforts, no matter how much time past, Amity Park refused to see Phantom as a hero.

Sure, there were pockets of support, particularly among teens, but most of the town blames Phantom for the property damage, saying if he didn't fight the ghosts then it wouldn't be so bad, to that time he got mind controlled by Freakshow and "attacked" the mayor. It wears him down. It wears Tucker and Sam down. Jazz can only try to support them all.

Then one day, a member of the Justice League visits. Someone minor, and kinda a jerk... maybe a Wonder Twin? Zan? Whatever. They don't investigate; they don't look deeper. They listen to the town folks and declare the ghost hunters, Red Huntress and the Fentons, to be the official heroes of the town.

Worse? Danny Phantom is officially considered a villain to the Justice League. Tuck hacks into the Watchtower and confirms that they have a file (a heavily inaccurate file) about how to defeat Phantom.

Danny doesn't think he can do this anymore.

A few weeks later, a young villain escapes into Amity and demands (begs) that Danny help them escape from the hero after them. No idea who, I can't find a lot of info on teen villains in DC, so let's fudge some ages and make it Kyd Wyckyd from the Teen Titans cartoon. Danny agrees, because to hell with the Justice Losers, and they defeat the hero, becoming friends in the process. Kyd confesses that they became a villain after being ostracized bc of how they look, and they've been trying to avoid villain organizations because HIVE was abusive, but it's really hard to be a villain alone bc of all the heroes.

Sam gets an idea. Tucker agrees with the idea. Jazz is just happy they'll end up making friends.

The next day, the Teen Villain Alliance is formed, ready to assist with any teenage illegal shenanigans their allies might get into.

Some notes:

It's created to be a healthier option for teen "villains" to connect with others and support each other.

It's more important that this is for Teens rather than Villains. They're tired of adult villains taking advantage of them. The TVA would rather ally with a teen vigilante than with an adult villain.

Again, no idea who the teen villains are, but Klarion is definitely here. He leaves the Light for the chaos of the TVA. Maybe Ember is there too?

Timeline wise, this is around when Tim is still Robin, but Damien has arrived at Wayne Manor.

This is because, when it comes time to try to infiltrate the TVA, they'll have a convenient child-assassin who has none of the monitors of a teen hero that Phantom immediately picks up on.

Damien, who at this point has been abandoned by his mother, dismissed and scolded by his father, and has had no success at carving his own place in the family, jumps at the chance. He is then surrounded by peers who don't insult him or try to change his behavior (too much; jazz is trying to help him find healthier methods of expressing himself). He... might not want to continue being a spy.

Danny, Sam, Tuck, and Jazz are the founding members.

Danny reinvents himself as the High Prince of the Infinite, Prince Phantom Dark. He got kingship from fighting Pariah Dark, but since he's still alive, he's only a prince. He steals the last name Dark as an intimidation tatic against those in the know; only Danny would have the balls to claim family with Pariah.

Sam works as a powerless villain, but she might no be powerless? Either way, Danny gives her a bunch of repurposed Fenton tech, and she buys the rest with her parents credit card. She does NOT care if that's traced back to the Mansons. She would choose something goth, maybe something spider related or even bat?

I love Pharaoh Tucker, so I think he should get magic powers? Since pharaohs of old were considered the balance between the real and the divine. He's still a tech guy, now he's a tech and magic guy.

Jazz isn't really a villain, more of a team mom who's planning on using everyone's psyche's as her thesis paper. You know what, that's her callsign, she's Psyche. Sometimes she flirts with Nightwing.
