Hi if you still do things for the parent 7 au, how would protagonists of the movies feel about their villain caring for a kid? i feel simba would be a pouty brat (if its still kid simba), alice would have the least personal tie to QoH, i cant decide if snow would be jealous becuse ¨hey! thats my stepmom being more of a mom to some kid than her real stepdaughter!¨ or if she´d just be happy E.Q loves someone other than herself. And so on
Okay I was gonna make this a fewe request but I've been struggling with it. Instead I'll give you my take
Alice (cartoon) is a kid at the end of the day. She finds the Queen unreasonable and rude and can't believe she would have a kid to begin with. If anything she would feel bad for you. Tim Burton Alice is kinda trying to kill your mom. She feels bad for a different reason. You are to be orphaned because of her. She knows the Queen can be kind but that doesn't mean that wasn't cruel to her people
Simba rationalizes it as much as he can but can't make sense of it. It would make sense if you were one of his own but your not. He was capable of such compassion to him as a kid, to be a loving uncle. And he never got that. He's not mad at you. But he is still hurting... also how to did he adopt a person.
Ariel is also conflicted. Especially cause since Ursula adopted you, you're all technically family. She is a bit sad that Ursula seemed not to care for her at all and chalks it up to her being closer to her father, a man she hates. She wishes she could have gotten to know you better, and part of her wants to save you from Ursula because she believed she'll corrupt you... but she knows that if she takes you away from your family, it would be unfair to you and you'd never forgive her
Aladdin can't believe this guy has a sweet spot for anyone. He wants to throw hands with him again, kid or no kid. He really doesn't get how you're so good despite being with him. Obviously Jafar was able to be a good person, he didn't want to be and feels no pity, except maybe for you.
Snow is also a child. And in some interpretations, the queens step child. This really does cut her deep. She's not mad at you at all, she thinks you're lovely. But she's just a kid who wants a mom or a dad and she never got that. Grimhilde never gave her the time of day and now she's fawning over you. Why can't you all just be a family?
Hercules is very suspicious of you. Hades had been a nuisance his entire life and now he has a kid. He's a bit suprised Hades is all soft for a kid and thinks you must be under a spell. Probably tried to save you from him which gets messy and you say that Hades is your father and he means a lot to you. He'll accept it and then just tell Hades to not involve you in his schemes. To let you chose your own path. He is not afraid to strike you down either.
Aurora no matter the interpretation seems very gentle and forgiving. I think she would be happy that Maleficent has someone she can be close too. So long as you are safe and happy, she accepts it.

I love your writing. I love how vulnerable you allow the characters to be. I love how you make ugly things beautiful and pretty things holy and reverent. I am extremely thankful for you and all that you do.
But I'm curious:
Are there any writers/works that you would say have had an influence on your style?
crying and crying. honestly yes! ugliness is very beautiful to me it’s very human & vulnerable & good to be ugly & i think life tends to be very imperfect & messy but we can be very beautiful (and yes, holy) inside of it.
hmm so first thing is that i’m mostly a poet & i came to that in my usual way which was deciding one day to teach myself how to Poetry. i figured it could not be very different from math and lo & behold it was not very different from math
i grew up using recitation of poems as a calming technique so those certainly influenced how cadence occurs to me, patterns of language (some poems were as gaeilge). some of the poems i memorised growing up were Dulce et Decorum Est by Wilfred Owen; Ode to a Nightingale by Keats; a whole bunch of Dickinson & especially Persimmons by Li Young Lee. the waste land by ts eliot too. i did adore shakespeare & how easy it was to commit to memory in iambic pentameter.
but then when i was 16 i decided to ‘git good’ at poetry (i was, in fact, very bad at it for many years to come) so i picked up Ariel by Plath & a load of Anne Sexton. Richard Siken too. and i read those books about 50 times each. could never read them too many times.
realised that poetry should be kind of like eating good food or having good sex. an experience that bears repeating.
so yes Sexton & Siken especially i think are explicitly influential to my style. also recently have learned a lot from Ocean Vuong (Night Sky With Exit Wounds but also please read ‘Not Even This’. listen to Ocean perform it) oh & also very recently impressed with Hull by Xan Phillips, & Danez Smith’s ‘don’t call us dead.’
language was made for puncturing & those poets know how to turn a sentence, a stanza, a turning of thought into a lung collapse, a harpoon.
i do firmly believe that it’s pointless to mimic style. it can happen that other words bleed into yours but it should be an accident, like the mirroring of language that forms the basis of so many interpersonal movements. language IS an exchange but we all bring something to the table.
& again it’s food - personal and cultural and loving and it’s about need and want and desire and death (food & death so tenderly intertwined in so many cultures). so i think reading good writing lends you instinct; the ability to look at what you make and know if it is good or at least true and therefore ‘getting there’ and therefore beautiful in the attempt regardless of imperfection.
i believe in purple prose and also Just Saying Things & i really think (i teach creative writing sometimes at uni) that i can bring out beautiful writing from anyone. it’s not always about skill it’s about heart, and then skill creeps up on you. i can always tell when someone is just performing writing and when someone has a story to tell.
so like!! the #1 thing that has influenced me is learning to love the way that writing makes me feel (powerful, stupid, profound, unoriginal, death-defying, mortal). i think reading so so much & just internalising different language-textures helps a bunch! i get so much inspiration from reading textbooks, wikipedia articles, random journals & i think poetry even if you are not & don’t wanna be a poet is very good at showing you the bones and sinews and connective tissue of meaning.
i am also so influenced by sci-fi & fantasy. particularly the Book of the Ancestor by Mark Lawrence (more gay nuns lmao) & N.K. Jemisin with The Broken Earth trilogy. 'the slow regard of silent things' specifically by Patrick Rothfuss (not a person to learn pacing from but astounding at sentence-level). also i am very influenced recently by This Is How You Lose The Time War. as a kid by Garth Nix (particularly Lirael, Sabriel) & artemis fowl.
of course on that note it’s usually the non-literature things that inspire actual writing from me. it’s principles in physics or math or thinking about Voyager 1 or philosophical questions that actually produce the sort of rabid pursuit of meaning that writing is. truly immersing in curiosity is an excellent way to approach making art. it's about reaching out & touching for a moment the fabric of everything - & you might find it is wet & sticky or dry and dusty or soft or that it hurts your hands to touch, but the chasing of meaning is worth it, & making meaning is divine.
i hope that is (somewhat) of an answer

I honestly wanna cry about the N*d thing
I trusted him, I really trusted him. AND WITH HIS OWN COWORKER TOO??? ONE WHO WAS ENGAGED????
And his fucking 'apology' post with the fucking "consensual work relationship". I hate it. I hate him, I hate her, fuck both of them.
I'm really happy they fired him but I'm also very sad for Ariel and the kids
I'm sorry I started ranting in your asks, I'm just really devastated and heartbroken and I don't really have any friends who consume Try Guys media
no i completely get what you’re saying…… it fucking sucks and i feel so so bad for ariel and their kids and the other guys and just everyone who has been affected by this whole thing. it’s already so so messy and this probably wouldn’t be the end of it.
(and you’re welcome to rant anytime <3 i already gave the full rundown to my friend who also doesn’t watch the try guys but know them bc i talk to her about it lol)

Aaron Hotchner x Reader
Word Count: 1457
Summary: You being a new recruit pissed SSA Aaron Hotchner off. You being smart enough to give Spencer Reid a run for his money pissed him off even more. Really, he just despised your presence. Hated your every move.
Until one day, he just… didn’t.
CHAPTER WARNINGS: general canon level violence, they talk about a new case, more angry Hotch, more angry reader
A/N: I'm excited that so many people want me to tag them! It's technically only like eight haha, but it's still so cool to me that people want to be told when I'm posting.

Chapter Two
Five months later, and you were still sitting at your desk in the late hours of the night. 12:34 AM. Too late. You had been staying at the bureau after hours to make it look like you were already taking this job as seriously as you could. To be fair, you were taking it seriously, but you figured the late hours being noticed would be a benefit.
So when your phone rang, you answered it immediately.
"L/N."
"Hey, Y/N, it's JJ. Can you come in for a case? Hotch just called and woke me up. I know it's pretty late, but it's a pretty bad one, we're going to Michigan."
"Yeah, not a problem. I wasn't asleep yet." You don't lie necessarily, but it's a half-truth for sure. JJ doesn't need to know that you were already at the BAU building, less than fifty feet away from the briefing room where you would all be meeting.
"Great, thanks Y/N. See you soon."
She clicks off the phone and you sigh before pushing yourself off of the desk.
"L/N." You almost drop the coffee you had been about to sip as you spun around in your swivel chair.
"Yes, sir?" You ask casually, deciding it was better to play dumb.
"Stand."
Obeying your order, you narrow your eyes and stand up, squaring your shoulders and trying to look bigger than you are.
"Now, explain." Hotchner stands in front of you, arms crossed.
"Explain what? That I'm here and we have a case?" You shake your head as you turn away from him.
"Did I say you could turn, Agent?" His voice sends a shiver through your core and you mentally slap yourself. Now is not the time.
Spinning back around, you catch a glimpse of Derek and Garcia walking in to the briefing room. "We have a case, Hotchner. Let's ignore the fact that I was just doing my paperwork and get in there please." It takes everything in you to turn away a second time. You bend down and grab your shoes, sliding them onto your feet before walking away from him and into the room.
You can feel his gaze on your back, but you ignore it, slipping through the conference room door and letting it fall shut behind you.
"Hey guys." You greet as you sit down.
"Hot mama-"
"Hey, beautiful-"
Derek and Penelope greet you at the same time, causing you two girls to giggle and Derek to stifle his laugh because, 'men don't giggle'.
The three of you exchange small talk until the others walk in, most of them looking like they had been in the deep clutches of sleep.
Spencer's already messy hair looked ten times worse, and Emily wasn't wearing a bra, which she was subtly trying to hide by hunching her shoulders forward.
She sits beside you and you send her the 'you good?' look.
"Don't even mention it, Y/N." She threatens lightly with a laugh before Rossi, JJ, and Hotchner walked in.
You kept your gaze down, but you knew his eyes were on you.
"Garcia, you have the slideshow pulled up?" JJ asks gently, knowing that the other blonde woman absolutely despised cases like this. Really the whole team did.
"Yeah... It's a doosy, team. Not pretty at all." She shakes her head and starts the slideshow before handing the tablet to JJ.
"Okay. Ariel Stanton, Franklin Lewis, and Ella Craft. Three kids, all mutilated with their heads severed and preserved. Their bodies were found in the same area of the Raisin River in Petersburg, MI. The heads-"
Penelope got up then and mumbled a string of 'I'm sorries' before all but running out the door.
Your fingers clutched at the dress pants you were wearing as JJ asked, "Does anyone else need to leave before I keep going?"
A collective shake of the team's heads is enough to convince JJ that she can keep going.
"Their heads were all found beside the river bank, fully intact. Two of the bodies came with a note to the precinct, it read: "Fear me, for I have God on my side. God will help me cleanse the Earth of its sinners. These children had to go, for they were not with God.""
You start speaking when the profile is complete, "Okay, so the references to God and doing His work suggests that this unsub sees himself as holier than thou. Most likely a man, age 30-40 and probably grew up in a family that was very religious; they would have prayed before meals and there would be records of this family donating very generously to the church that they attended."
"No. That profile is wrong, L/N. If you had paid any attention, you'd know that the use of the word 'cleanse' means that he thinks these "sinners" are dirty, he's not thinking that he is necessarily better. I don't need your input again."
"Hotch come-"
"You do not have the right to call me that. My team calls me that. To you, I am Agent Hotchner." His gaze was cold, but there was something there.
"Fine. I'll be on the jet." You stand up and as you bend to pick your purse off the ground, Emily whispers in your ear.
"I agreed with you. I'll brief you on the jet."
You nod once and swiftly walk out of the room, "accidentally" bumping Hotchner on your way out. Luckily, he doesn't say anything about it.
Later on the jet, you have your headphones in and are listening the your favorite song of the week. Your taste in music changes frequently, but right now, you were into the old rock and were listening to Journey.
Your lips press into a hard line when you see Hotchner walking up to you. Taking your headphones out and sit up straighter.
"What do you want?" Your voice is bratty and you sigh, quirking an eyebrow up at him.
"I uh, am here to apologize. Rossi thinks it's necessary that I say 'I'm sorry'. So here I am."
You just stare at him.
"What, Y/N?"
"You had something to say?" You cross your arms and lean back in the seat.
His eyebrows furrow when he thinks about what you said and gets a bit confused. "What do you mean? I just said it."
"Oh, did you?" You turn to Spencer, who was sitting across from you, and said, "Did you hear what Hotchner just said?"
"Uh, yeah. I did, why?" He looks up from the book he was reading.
You smirk slightly at Hotch before saying, "Can you use that amazing brain of yours to tell me what he said?"
""I uh, am here to apologize. Rossi thinks it's necessary that I say 'I'm sorry'. So here I am." Why did you need that?" He says after repeating the sentences word for word.
Hotch glares at you a bit as you shrug your shoulders.
"I don't know... I just didn't hear an apology in that." You bat your eyelashes up at the older man and add, "You said that Rossi told you to apologize, but you never said that you were sorry."
"Really, L/N? You want me to get on my knees and beg you?" He asks, spitting the words out like incredulous knives.
You keep the snide tone as you reply, "If you'd like to get on your knees, I may be more inclined to accept the imminent apology."
"Don't be a brat, L/N. I get that some of your past lovers may have liked that, but it has no place in this team. I am still your superior and I recommend you treat me like one."
He walks away without having ever apologizing, and you're left there with your jaw on the floor from his parting message.
"-Yeah! And then he was like, 'Don't be a brat. Your ex probably liked it but I'm your superior-"
"O-M-G, O-M-G. What did you say back to him?!" A very excitable Emily asks from you shared hotel room in Michigan.
"Nothing. I couldn't say anything to him because he just spun and WALKED. AWAY." You nod your head at her, your eyebrows raising as you conveyed your own disbelief at the story. "Yeah, it was horrible. I was so mad."
Emily wiggles her eyebrows, causing you to shake your head.
"Whaaat? No. No!"
"Yeah, Y/N. There's some MAD sexual tension between you two."
"Oh, get out!"
As you laugh at her statement, you pick up the pillow behind you and hit her in the side of the head with it.
"You're gonna get it now."
Faking a gasp, you stand and say, "Is that a threat, Emily?"
"Yes. Now run, bitch."
Yu both giggle and spend the night acting like teenagers again. You didn't have time to think about Aaron if you wanted to which you... no.
You didn't want to.

He dreams of one of his tours in Afghanistan. Two years into his time with SASR and his platoon imbedded with local friendlies; two dozen militia members that hated The Taliban just as much as the rest of the world and wanted a hand in bringing them down. He’d only been thirty at the time and already considered a seasoned veteran; several deployments into active and heavy combat, scars left behind from gunshot sounds and where shrapnel from roadside bombs had embedded into his skin. He’d felt as if he were eighty years old; shoulders weighed down by the horrors he’d seen and the things he’d had to do. No longer flinching when he had to take the life of another, but still feeling nauseous and when confronted by the bodies of those tortured and mutilated at the hands of terrorists. The healthy, the disabled, women, children; no one was safe from the brutality and it wasn’t uncommon to pass corpses in the streets or drive through bombed out towns.
Threats were everywhere; he’d long ago learned to sleep with a gun underneath his pillow. His instincts and senses sharp and keen and always on high alert; ears pricking to the howl of the wind or the rustle of rocks or the stirring of sand. Actual rest was a rare commodity for younger soldiers, but he’d become used to bedding down in the earth; body accustomed to the hard surface beneath him and his head not minding his rucksack as a pillow.
Three days had been spent navigating through rough terrain despite brutal elements they’d been faced with, and on the fourth night they were able to find refuge in a cave carved into the mountainside of the Tangi Valley. On their way to Mazar-i-Sharif; a well known Taliban stronghold. There they and the Afghan friendlies would attempt to take back the city; hoping and praying that they’d have enough weaponry and ammunition to wipe the enemy forces out. And that their own death tally wouldn’t be too high.
It was the first time he’d been afraid while with the SASR; warned that even with success, the chances of getting home alive were extremely unlikely. His wife had been pregnant at that time. Three weeks away from delivering his son; experiencing difficulties because of her own stress and worries revolving around his health and safety and his whereabouts. There’d been close calls already; snipers in the mountains, ambushes with rocket propelled grenades and tanks. His hyper-vigilance had been on high alert; every strange noise or shift of the rocks jarring him awake and seeing him reach under his backpack for the handgun he’d hidden underneath it.
He feels it now; the presence of someone standing beside him. Hears it; the soft breathing and the slight rustle of clothes. And he acts on pure instinct; hand sliding under his pillow and waiting for his fingertips to come in contact with the barrel of his Glock. Its absence sending his fear into overdrive and immediately instilling panic; eyes snapping open as he bolts into a sit and both hands shoot out to grab hold of the threat.
“Hi daddy.”
He blinks rapidly. The dream quickly evaporating and the cavern of sand and rocks dissipating; replaced by the wall of windows that provide a view of the darkened backyard and the glow of the space heater located in the far corner. Swallowing down the bile that sits in his throat, he briefly closes his eyes; using a forearm to clear perspiration from his forehead.
“Are you okay?” Addie inquires as she stands at the side of the couch. Clad in her favourite pair of unicorn themed pyjamas; Franklin the stuffed koala tucked under her arm, dark hair mussed from sleep.
He finally manages to gain control of himself; senses registering the familiar surroundings. “What are you doing?”
“I got up to go pee and then I wanted to snuggle with you and mummy in the big bed, but you guys weren’t there. I know I’m not supposed to come downstairs by myself while everyone is sleeping, but I was worried and I wanted to find you.”
“Are you okay? Did you have an accident in your bed?”
“Nope. I made it in time. I was scared; when I didn’t find you and mummy in your room. I thought maybe you left us.”
“Why would we leave you? You guys need us. We’d never do something like that. We love you guys way too much to ever leave you.” Reaching out, he gently cups the back of her head in his palm. “You know that, right? That mummy and I love you guys so much.”
Nooding, she tucks Franklin under her arm and she balls her hands into fists; rubbing vigorously at her eyes. “Why are you guys down here? Why aren’t you sleeping in your normal bed?”
“Mummy and I were up late. Talking.”
“About what?”
“Stuff.”
Addie tilts her head to the side. “What kind of stuff?”
“Stuff that mummies and daddies talk about. That little ears don’t need to hear.”
“So scary stuff? Or stuff with lots of swears in it?”
“Just stuff you don’t need to worry about.”
“Were you talking about…” she taps a finger against her lips. “... my birthday party?”
“You have a birthday coming up?”
Giving a dramatic huff; both hands find her hips and a pout curves her lips. “Daddy! You know my birthday is soon. February thirteenth. The day before Valentine’s Day. How could you forget that? Your own kid’s birthday! Your favourite kid!”
“I’m teasing you. I didn’t forget your birthday. I could NEVER forget it. Ever.”
“Mummy said maybe we could go to the koala place again.”
“That’s where you went last year. And the year before.”
“It’s my favourite place in the whole world. Mummy said to ask you. If we could go there. She says it’s up to you because you’re paying AND driving.”
“If you want to go to the koala place, that’s where we’ll go. Or we could go to the one in Melbourne; fly down and make a weekend of it.”
“I don’t want to fly. I don’t like it. It’s scary. “
“Since when? You’re fine with it when we go to Disney World.”
“That’s because I know I’m going to see Belle and Ariel and Snow White and Moana. That makes it worth it; being scared to death and worried the plane is going to crash.”
“The plane is NOT going to crash.”
“You don’t know that. Can’t we just drive to the koala place we always go to? They know me there. The koalas. They’ll be happy to see me.”
“If that’s what you want to do, we’ll do it. Now….” he reaches out and clears messy strands of hair away from the sides of her face and out of her eyes. “...why are you still up?”
“Isn’t today when we go to the American Girl store?”
“Yeah, but not for a while. Not for a LONG while. It’s still dark out. What time is it? Grab my phone. Check it”
Snagging the item in question from the cluttered coffee table, she presses the button on the side to make the screen come to life. “It says it’s six zero two.”
“Addie….” he groans and presses the heels of his palms into his eyes. “...it is way too early to be up, Peanut. Sun’s not even out.”
“Can we have breakfast? And then when we’re done it’ll be time to go to American Girl?”
“Baby girl, we’re not leaving until eleven. So even if we eat really slow, it’ll still be hours away. Why don’t you go back upstairs and lie down. See if you can fall back asleep for a bit.”
“I don’t want to go back up there. It’s too dark and I used up all my courage coming to find you and mumma. What if something chases me up the stairs? And catches me?”
“Where’s your monster spray I made for you? You all out?”
“I forgot it. In my room. That’s why I had to use all my courage to come find you. I’ll go back up there if you come with me. And snuggle for a bit.”
“I got a better idea; climb in here and snuggle with mummy.”
“And you?”
“I don’t snuggle.”
“You do too. Why are you so embarrassed to admit it? Snuggling is nice. It feels good. It makes your heart happy. It’s never a bad thing when your heart is happy.”
“Yeah,” he smiles, and lightly ruffles her hair. “It does. Come on; get in here.”
“I’m too tiny to get in.”
“You can make it. I know you’re like a spider monkey; I’ve seen you scale the fridge and the cupboards trying to get to things. Come on, hurry up.”
Tossing Franklin over the top of the sofa, she glances around the room; a fingertip pressed against her lips as she considers her options for assistance in getting to her final destination. Electing to push the coffee table over; groaning and grunting dramatically as her tiny body puts all the effort and strength it can in getting the heavy wooden object into place. Climbing effortlessly onto it and then slinging one leg over the top of the couch and then another; sitting on top of it with a victorious, proud smile that spreads from ear to ear.
“I did it! Daddy I did it! All on my own!”
“I knew you could do it. You just had to think about HOW you were going to do it. You’re crazy smart, you know that?”
“Not as smart as Tanner.”
“Nobody is as smart as Tanner. Not in this house anyway.”
“Not even you or mumma?”
“Definitely not me. But your mumma comes pretty damn close.”
“Mumma’s pretty smart. I mean, she has to be right? She fell in love with you.”
He grins. “You’re smooth, you know that?”
“I learned that from you. I’mma lie with you for a bit, okay? Then snuggle with mum.”
Nodding in agreement, he pulls the sleeping bag back and then he places his hands on her hips, steadying her as she slides down the back of the sofa and then plants herself on his stomach. Both arms wrapping around her tiny body as she stretches out along him; lips pressing against her brow as he head settles on his collarbone.
“It’s like a nest,” Addie enthuses, as he covers them both with the sleeping bag. “I like it. Maybe we can do this at home sometimes.”
“Maybe.” A tiny hand reaches up to brush against his beard, and he turns his face into it and kisses the palm.
“You need to shave, daddy.”
“Last week you said you liked my face like this. What gives?”
“It’s getting TOO bushy. I can’t see your face. Why you want to hide your face? It’s a cute face.”
He frowns. “Excuse me? I let you into the nest and you treat me like that?”
Addie giggles. “Sorry. I know it’s worse than a swear to you. You let mummy call you cute.”
“Sometimes I let her get away with it.”
“Well, I’m a mini mumma so that means I should get be able to get away with it too.”
“Your logic is actually pretty sound. I can’t argue with it. I’ll clean it up when we get home; thin it out, get my hair cut…”
“Don’t shave it off though. I don’t want you to have NO hair. I don’t think it would suit your face. If you were bald like Grandpa Koen.”
“Short, but not too short. Sound good?”
“I’ll agree to it. Mumma would NOT like it; if you got rid of all your hair.”
“She definitely wouldn’t. Speaking of mumma, let’s not talk so loud okay? Mumma didn’t sleep well last night; she needs her rest.”
Addie lifts her head from his chest. “Is she okay? She’s not sick is she? I don’t want mumma to be sick.”
“She’s not sick. Just tired. She hasn’t gotten a good sleep in a while. So let’s help her do that, yeah? Help her get the rest she needs? So she can take care of you guys? Be the mumma she always is? Can you do that? Help her get some sleep?”
Addie manages a nod; chin tucked into her chest and tears sparkling in her eyes.
“Hey…” he brushes her dark locks away from the side of her face. “...what’s wrong? Why are you going to cry?”
“Are you sure she’s alright? Are you sure mumma isn’t sick? That there isn’t something wrong with her?”
“Peanut, I am one hundred percent sure there is nothing wrong with her. She’s just tired. She hasn’t been sleeping well and she’s trying to catch up on what she’s lost. That’s it.”
“Are you sure, daddy? I don’t want mumma to be sick.”
“Mumma is NOT sick. She’s just tired. Would I lie to you?”
“No. You don’t lie ever. Maybe sometimes for your job because you have to, but never to us. OR mumma.”
“You need to trust me, alright? She’s fine. Just really tired. And that’s why we need to help her; keep our voices down and let her sleep. Make sense?”
Addie nods.
“Don’t cry. There’s no reason. Come here…” Laying a hand on the back of her head, he presses a kiss to her forehead and then draws her back down to rest upon him. “....mummy’s okay. Just sometimes, she gets worn out. She does a lot. For you guys, for me. She just needs to recharge her batteries. That’s all.”
Addie frowns. “Mumma doesn't have batteries. She’s human. Like us. She IS human, right?”
“Sometimes I wonder if she is; considering how awesome she is and how much she loves and takes care of all of us. But yeah, she IS a human. It’s a figure of speech; needing to recharge your batteries when you’re really, really, REALLY tired.”
“You promise she’s okay?”
“I promise. I would never, ever lie to you, Peanut. Mummy’s okay. She just needs some rest.”
“Alright,” she relents, and once more lays her head upon his chest; her eyes closing as his fingers repeatedly comb through her hair. One of her hands finds his right ear; softly pinching the top before her fingertips begin a slow and repetitive caress of the outer edge. Both she and Millie had adopted the same self soothing technique when they were just babies; the thumb of one hand shoved firmly in their mouths while the fingers of the other either stroked his ears or twisted at his hair.
“Addie?”
“Daddy?”
“I need to ask you something, okay? About when you get upset. Like you did just know about mummy. Is that okay?”
“That’s okay.”
“When you get like that, does it make you feel any different? Is there a change from how you normally feel?”
“Whaddya mean?”
“Inside of you. Does anything different go on? When you get worked up like that, do you notice anything weird or funny or strange going on? Like in your stomach or your chest or your head or…”
“It hurts a bit,” Addie admits. “Like someone is squeezing my chest really tight. And my heart goes really, really fast and my tummy gets all butterflies in it. But not good butterflies; like when you meet someone beautiful and fall in love with them. Bad butterflies; like I’m gonna throw up. But I don’t.”
It’s the last thing he wanted to hear; yet another one of his kids showing telltale signs of mental health issues. Apparently running rampant through the family thanks to the combination of parental genes; moderate to severe anxiety issues, neurotic tendencies, feelings of panic and fear, episodes of mild to severe depression. He’d hoped that none of them would ever have to battle those kinds of demons; praying to whatever higher power existed -if any- that they’d be spared and their lives filled with nothing but love and light and the most trivial of problems. The guilt is quick to set in; blaming himself for the ‘fucked up, messy genes’ that have been bestowed upon them; a father with a lifetime of trauma and severe mental health issues that bears the titles of alcoholic and drug addict.
“Is that bad?” Addie inquires, and when he glances down he notices the worry that darkens her eyes and lines her face; deep furrows across her brow and the pout capturing her lips. “Am I sick? Am I going to die? I don’t want to die, daddy!”
“You’re not going to die,” he assures her, and tightens his hold on her. “And you’re not sick. It’s pretty normal. A lot of people feel that way. I know I do.”
Her face brightens at his confession; the joy of sharing something -even anxiety- with him and the relief that she isn’t alone in her struggles. “You do?”
Tyler nods. “Quite a lot, actually.”
“That’s part of your brain stuff? Feeling like that?”
“It’s one part of it. One of MANY parts.”
“Is my brain sick too? Is it sad like yours?”
“I don’t think so . I think it’s just something you’re going through. It’ll probably go away as you start growing up.”
She scrambles into a sit. “What if it doesn’t? Will I have to take medicine like you do?”
“You know what, how about we only worry about that IF it happens? Let’s see how it goes, alright? As you get bigger. But if things get worse and you start feeling like more and more and it’s getting stronger, you have to tell me or mumma okay? It’s important that you tell us. Will you promise? That if things get worse you’ll tell me or mumma?”
“I promise.”
“Good girl.” Laying a hand on the back of her head , he gently pulls her closer; pressing a series of kisses down the bridge of her nose. “Mumma and I need to know; if you’re feeling stuff like that.”
“I promise I’ll tell you. I won’t keep it a secret. Can I ask you a question now?”
“Can you lie down and ask it? Because it’s still really early and we still need to get some more sleep.”
Nodding in agreement, she once more stretches out along him. Side of her head resting on his collarbone and her fingers immediately reaching for the chain around his neck; rubbing the pendant -engraved with his and Esme’s zodiac symbols- between her thumb and forefinger.
One palm rests in the middle of her back as the other softly strokes her hair. “What do you want to ask me?”
“What did Austin look like?”
“What?” He gives an uncomfortable laugh; the mere mention of his son’s name tightening his chest. It’s creeping up on him; Addie’s sixth birthday and the anniversary -just three weeks later- of the death of his first child. Some days he doesn’t think of Austin at all; his past life nothing but a faded memory as he enjoys the new one that continues to play out in front of him. Other days the grief is profound; ripping at his heart and clawing at his throat and making his sorrow nearly unbearable. He wonders if it will ever go away; if he’ll wake up one morning and realize that years...decades even…have passed by without being haunted by his son’s demise and his horrible mistake leading up to it. “Where’d that come from?”
“I had a dream. He was in it. He didn’t say his name or anything and I don’t know what he looks like, but I KNEW it was. He was at our house. In Australia. And he was playing with us; chasing us in the sand and throwing us into the water and helping look for rocks and shells and sea glass.”
“Was he a little boy or…?”
“No. He was big. Older than Millie even. A teenager. He looked like you; he was tall and he had your eyes and muscles. Not as big as yours, though. Little ones. What DID he look like?”
“He looked a lot like TJ. Blond hair that was always kinda messy. Blue eyes. Same nose. Ears.”
“That means he was cute then. ‘Cause Tyler’s cute and he looks just like you and you’re cute so…”
“You realize you’ve called me that twice? In less than an hour?”
“It’s a compliment, silly. Mumma said you can be cute AND a bad ass. At the same time.”
“Well if mumma says it, I guess it’s true.”
“Austin was just little, right? When he died?”
“He was. He was six.”
“I’m going to be six soon. Does that mean I’m going to die too?”
“No, Peanut. It doesn’t mean that at all. It has nothing to do with turning the same age. Austin was sick and the doctors couldn’t fix him. There’s nothing wrong with you. You’re healthy. VERY healthy.”
“If he was six when he died and you met mummy four years after that…”
“He would have been ten when I met your mum. And I met her almost thirteen years ago.”
“So he’d be…” her eyes narrow and she chews on her bottom lip. “...twenty-three now.”
“That’s pretty damn good; you figuring that out. You’re pretty smart.”
Addie beams. “Like mummy.”
“You’re like mummy in so many ways. And that’s a good thing. A VERY good thing.”
“If Austin never died, would he have lived with his mummy or with you and my mummy?”
He doesn’t have the heart to tell her that if Austin hadn’t passed away, the life she knows wouldn’t even exist. SHE wouldn’t exist. Had his first born son never been diagnosed with cancer and had lived a healthy life, he would have never gotten into the job; he would have stayed in the military and made it his career and would have never had a reason to even think about the ‘job’, never mind actually getting into it. And although his first marriage still would have fallen apart for many reasons, his path never would have crossed with Esme’s. Meeting her had only taken place because of his choice to become a mercenary; his enormous guilt and regret and immense sorrow pushing him in that direction.
Addie couldn’t handle hearing it; the cold, hard truth. Not even at fifty years old, never mind only five. She’s remarkably different from his other girls.; tiny and dainty and sensitive to a fault. Prone to easily having her feelings hurt and bursting into tears if someone so much as raises their voice at her or casts an angry or disappointed look in her direction. Millie and Brooklyn are ‘harder’. Boisterous and fearless and ‘rough and tumble’ ; never blinking under the often harsh teasing from their brothers and never flinching when they’re scolded or punished. They’d never needed the amount of coddling and physical contact that Addie craves; always needing cuddles and kisses and unabashedly seeking them out whenever she craves them. The others hate the idea of being ‘babied; fiercely independent and not needing the level of attention and reassurance that their sister does. And it’s a welcome change; the one little girl that he can dote on and spoil and treat like a princess. Something he -of all people given his sheer size and physical prowess and often intimidating nature- had never known he wanted; something so bright and beautiful that needs him almost as much as he needs them. She keeps him grounded and ‘light’ in ways the others can’t; her purity and her innocence infectious, her giggle and her smile and the way the word ‘daddy’ sounds coming out of her mouth doing wonders for his aching body, mind, and soul.
“He probably would have lived with his mum,” he says, fingers lightly dancing over her silky, dark hair. “And come to visit us.”
“He had a good mum? She was good to him?”
“She was VERY good to him. She loved him very, very much. And he loved her just the same; they were really close. Did everything together. Because I was away a lot.”
“When you were in the military?”
He nods.
“Was she as good as my mum?”
“Peanut, I don’t think there’s anyone in this world that is as good as your mum. Your mum is pretty awesome. She’s been through a lot of stuff in the past twelve years. Stuff that would have scared other people off. But she hung in there and she made things work even when I thought they might fall apart. And she had all you guys; all seven of you. That’s something. That’s a lot of babies.”
“No one is as good as my mum. No one. She’s pretty and she’s funny and she always gives us hugs and kisses and stops whatever she’s doing to pay attention to us. And she does fun things with us. Even when she doesn’t really have the time to do them. She just stops everything and gives us whatever we need. And she has fun doing it. Spending time with us.”
“Your mummy loves you guys so much. You know, there was a time she thought she wouldn’t even be a mummy. And I think that’s why she gives so much of herself. Why she’s always willing to put everything else aside for you guys. Because she never thought she’d have kids. And now she’s so happy she does.”
“But she had to have help, right? To have us. You had to help.”
“I played a little part in it.”
“What did you have to do?”
“Things that you’ll find out when you’re older. MUCH older.”
“How much older?”
“I don’t know…” he presses a kiss to her forehead. “...thirty? Forty?”
She giggles. “Daddy! That’s way far away! I need to know before that.”
“I’ll decide when you need to know those things. Until then? I’m going to keep you locked in your room. So no boys can get to you. Or girls, if that’s the way you wanna go.”
“Like Rapunzel,” Addie muses. “She was locked in her room. But her parents were mean and that’s why they did it. You and mumma aren’t mean. You just don’t want me meeting someone and moving away.”
“That’s EXACTLY it. I don’t want that. I want you to stay little forever. Exactly how you are right now. The one that still wants me to cuddle her and still likes to spend time with me.”
“I’ll ALWAYS want daddy cuddles. And to spend time with you. Why wouldn’t I want cuddles? Why wouldn’t I want to do things with you? You’re my daddy. I love you.”
“And I love you. So much. So very, very, VERY much.”
“If I’m going to be like Rapunzel, I better start growing my hair faster.”
“Yeah,” he chuckles. “You better.”
Abandoning the chain around his neck, her fingers move to the tattoo that graces the left side of his throat. “What was her name?”
“Who?”
“Austin’s mummy. What was her name?”
“Why so many questions? Especially about this stuff?”
“I’m just curious. What was it? Her name?”
“Her name is Sarah.”
“That’s a pretty name. Not as pretty as Esme, though.”
“No. It’s not. But you and I are a little biased, so…”
“Just a bit,” Addie agrees. “What does she look like? Does she look like mummy?”
“Nope. She’s totally different than your mum. She’s tall and heavier and more muscley. Blond hair. Green eyes.”
“She sounds pretty. But no one is prettier than mummy. NO ONE.”
“I have to agree there. I don’t think anyone else is either.”
“Was she nice? Austin’s mum?”
“She had her moments. And speaking of moments…” he lightly pats her bum. “...the moment is long past for you to go back to sleep for a while. So you’re not too tired to have fun at the American Girl store.”
“I’m not sleepy though. I’m too excited to be sleepy. I get to spend the day with you. All by myself!”
“And you know what? I’m excited about that too. But I’m also very tired and if I don’t get any sleep…”
“You’ll be really grumpy. Like a bear with a sore asshole.”
Laughing, he clasps her face in both palms and presses a kiss to her lips. “I think you sometimes listen to your mum TOO much. Do you think you could try? To get some more sleep?”
Addie nods. “I’m going to lie down on the other side of mumma. So she’s in between us. Then we can both snuggle her, okay?”
“I think that’s a great idea. Be careful though…” he lays a hand on her hip as she gets to her knees and begins the gingerly process of climbing over her mother without disturbing her. “...don’t fall on her, kick her, knee her, anything like that, okay?”
“I’m careful. And smooth. Like a ninja.”
Crawling under the sleeping bag, she settles herself on her side between Esme and the back of the couch. And he watches silently as the five year old’s hand begins softly exploring her mother’s face; gently fingertips moving across her forehead and over her eyes and along the bridge of her nose. So much love and adoration written all over Addie’s face that it brings tears to his eyes and causes a lump of emotion to settle in his throat.
Esme stirs; soft whimper followed by a groan of disapproval. And he rolls over onto his side and moves closer to her; lips meeting the back of her head as his hand rests on her hips. “It’s alright, baby. It’s just Addie. Climbing in with us.”
“Okay…” she mutters, and her eyes flicker open.
“Hi mumma,” Addie greets, her smile spreading from ear to ear.
“Hi little bug.”
“Daddy said I could sleep here. You’re in the middle so we can BOTH snuggle you. Alright?”
“Alright. I can’t think of anything better; stuck in the centre of a daddy and Addie cuddle sandwich.”
“Go to sleep, mumma.” Addie presses a kiss to her mother’s lips, then snuggles into her as tight as she possibly can. “Daddy and I got you. We’ll take good care of you. Right, daddy?”
“Right,” he agrees, as his hand slides to his wife’s stomach. Palm pressed against where he imagines his unborn child could be resting; safe and secure in the confines of its mother’s body. And he leans in to place a kiss on her cheek, whispering “I love you” into her ear before burying his face in her hair.
***** She busies herself with household chores; two loads of laundry to wash and dry, suitcases that still need to be packed, a sink full of dirty dishes. The house is oddly quiet; Addie and Tyler gone for their trip to the American Girl store, Desi taking the others out shopping and to lunch and a movie. It feels odd to have no commotion going on around her; no flurry of activity, no little voices all shouting for attention at the same time, no video games blaring from the television in the living room. And while the silence and the lull should fill her with a sense of peace, she finds it even more distracting; enabling her brain to go into overdrive and allowing her to dwell on the mountain of worries that are plaguing her.
It’s a welcome relief when she hears the front door click open and her sister’s voice shouts out in greeting. Both dogs snapping out of their naps and rushing towards the visitor; the loud jingling of their tags against their collars accompanied by their raucous barking. And she laughs just minutes later as Riley’s arm curls around her neck, pulling her backwards into her sister’s much taller frame.
“What are you doing here? I thought you and Shaena were playing tourists today?”
“Way too damn cold!” The red head grumbles. “And you can’t enjoy yourself when there’s that much white shit on the ground.”
“It’s kinda weird; growing up in Colorado yet complaining about the temperature and the weather here. New York City has nothing on Snowmass.”
“Are you kidding me? It’s a dry cold there. Here? Damp as fuck; you feel right into your bones! And the wind? Why is it always so windy here? Isn’t that supposed to be Chicago?”
“I think you’ve just become completely spoiled,” Esme muses, as she presses a kiss to her sister’s forearm and then turns her attention back to the sink of soap suds and dirty dishes in front of her. “Moving to Australia totally turned you from snow bunny to beach bum.”
“Was the lifestyle change I desperately needed and didn’t even realize it,” Riley admits, then plants a noisy kiss on Esme’s temple before stepping alongside her, fetching a towel from the countertop and starting on an already full rake of plates, bowls, silverware, and cups. “What happened? Dishwasher broke?”
“The dishwasher is full. Because we have been so caught up on laundry and putting Christmas shit away and packing to go home, that we never even gave it a second thought. So sadly, I have to do it the hard way. Like the pioneers did.”
“Well thankfully, you still have electricity, running water, and flushing toilets. You do, right? Have flushing toilets?”
“When Takota isn't shoving things that shouldn’t be shoved down them, they flush just fine.” Sighing, she drops her head to her shoulder; using the latter to push wayward strands of hair off her brow and away from her forehead.
“You sound a little...stressed.”
“You think? I’m just a little...oh I don’t know...overwhelmed. I’ve still got shit to pack, I’ve got to confirm our flight plans, I’ve got to somehow pick up the girls’ dresses for the wedding between now and Saturday morning, and I totally forgot to make a hair or nail appointment. So yeah, I am just a tad stressed.”
“Not to mention you've got a little Australian hot cross bun cooking in the oven.”
Her hands still within the soapy water as she glances over at her sister, both eyebrows raised. “He told you?”
“Well, I suspected and asked. He just confirmed it. Did you know he’s already got that goofy, proud as hell, daddy to be grin going on? For a guy that only had to put in five minutes of effort…”
“Don’t ever let him hear you say that. There’s no insult quite as damaging to his ego as that. And in his defense, he puts in more effort than that. A LOT more. He’s a very willing, extremely talented, and selfless participant.”
“I do NOT need the gory details, thank you. Bad enough I’ve come over and he’s been wandering around butt ass naked. Outside.”
Esme laughs. “That’s just the way he is. He has no fucks to give. Not to mention, we’re pretty secluded where we are and we’re not used to people just showing up. If you’d used the front door like a normal person and not come down the beach…”
“I thought I’d be perfectly safe. I wasn’t expecting to see my brother in law in all his naked glory.”
“You’re lucky it’s only happened that once. Tyler’s known to strip down when he’s out there. At least four to five times a week. He’s in his own little world and there’s no one around to bother him; if he’s dirty from working on the land or he’s been surfing, he’ll just whip his clothes off and use the outdoor shower. To be honest, he’d probably whip them off in front of a crowd of people. He literally does not give a shit.”
“Well, I’ll give credit where credit is due. Even though I do go for the ladies, I was pretty impressed. It’s only fuelled my all time burning question, though. How does he NOT break you in half? I mean, you’re so tiny and he’s so….not tiny.”
“We manage. Although sometimes I wonder if he IS going to break me in half. But in all fairness, that’s my fault. I’m the one who tells him to kick it up a notch and who likes it…”
“I do NOT want to hear this. I know you’re a kinky little thing, but I don’t need the details. If you say it’s fun, I believe you. And it MUST be. You’re still satisfied with the same dick after almost twelve and a half years.”
“I have zero complaints. Nothing but praise, believe me.”
“I remember the old Esme. The one that got bored of guys really quickly and sent them on their way. I mean, other than Tyler and he who shall not be named, you’re not exactly known for being a long term kinda of gal.”
“Never met anyone that could hold my interest long enough. People I dated? All they wanted out of me was purely physical and I longed for something more than that. They just weren’t the type that I could get that out of. Not everything is about sex, Ry. I don’t quite have the resume that you do.”
“I keep forgetting; you’ve always been more into finding someone that’s soul food and not just good for the body.”
“You make it sound like there’s something wrong with me. When you say it like that. I’m not some kind of freak because I didn’t bang everyone that showed interest. I was just looking for more than that. And the people I was with? They bored me. And if they weren’t turning me on in every way…”
“You wanted both clitoral AND intellectual stimulation.”
“I guess that’s one way of putting it.”
“Kind of funny Tyler fits that bill. He’s not exactly the intellectual type.”
Esme frowns. “He’s not exactly stupid, either. He happens to be very smart, Ry. Way smarter than anyone gives him credit for. Why do people think he’s not? I fucking hate that; people underestimating him like that.”
“Okay...that’s not what I was doing…”
“It’s like people hear what he does for a living or look at him and think he’s stupid. They see the size of him and the muscles and the scars and the tattoos and they think doesn’t have two brain cells to rub together.”
“Me-Me, I do not look at Tyler that way. I never have. I was just teasing. I didn’t…”
“He’s not a dumb ass, alright? I know he has his issues; with his brain. And I know things are starting to slip; his short term memory is getting worse and he’s got some cognitive things going on and he sometimes doesn’t make the best decisions. But he’s a good man and he’s a great husband and an even better father and he’s not stupid! He’s not...he’s….” She tosses the dish rag into the sink and brings soap covered hands to her face as she bursts into tears. “...fuck...these fucking hormones!”
“Hey...hey…” Riley peels her sister’s hands away from her face and uses the dish towel to dry them. “....what’s going on? What…?”
“I am so overwhelmed. I’m not doing well with this. At all. Accepting this.”
“Accepting the baby or…?”
“Everything. Everything is falling apart, And I’m trying so hard to keep it all together and I’m worried I won’t be able to do it for much longer.”
“Okay, you need to take a breath and start at the beginning. I know things are pretty damn scary right now and having another baby wasn’t exactly on your radar, but…”
“Things are getting worse. With Tyler.”
“What things? Between the two of you? With his mental health issues? Esme, give me something here. Please.”
“With his brain injury. I know the doctor said that things could start to deteriorate; short term memory, cognitive skills, temper. Even his handwriting is getting worse. And he gets confused so easily; even with the most simple things. There’s times when he’s talking and he just stops and it’s like he can’t come up with the words. Sometimes he manages to remember them, but other times it’s like his brain just won’t let him. And then I see it; in his eyes. How it frustrates him. And how worried he is.”
“Have you said anything to him? About all that stuff?”
“I’ve tried. But he doesn’t want to talk about it. He’s scared. I know he is. I know when to back off; when not to push things. And if I push it…”
“What about his doctor? The shrink. Have you talked to him?”
“I sent him an email. He said we’ll talk in the new year. He’s away on vacation.”
“Listen…” Riley places her hands on Esme’s shoulders. “...I know it’s hard not to read into things and it’s even harder to calm down when someone tells you to, but you need to calm down and not dwell. All those things you mentioned? They’re not necessarily signs that things are getting worse. I know I’m not a shrink, but I am a nurse and I would not lie to you about this. You know that, right?”
Esme nods.
“Tyler’s been under a lot of stress. The last five years have been sheer and utter hell. And the business is really picking up and yeah, he’s struggling with his bipolar and PTSD. He’s been overworked and overwhelmed and all those things? It’s very possible it’s just how the stress and the fight with his mental health are making him act. There is no guarantee this is a sign that things are deteriorating.”
“Really?”
“Really. And I think he realizes he’s in a little over his head and that he needs help so things DON’T get worse. Would he have called me if he wasn’t thinking right? Me-Me, his brain is working just fine. He went into protective hubby and daddy to be mode right away; he stepped it up and he admitted he needed it and he called me. That isn’t a man who’s losing it. Not by a long shot.”
“He actually did surprise me,” she admits. “When he told me he called you. I expected him to dwell on things, you know? Tyler has a tendency to do that; he always has. But he didn’t even hesitate. He outright admitted he needed help and went looking for it. And that’s a big step for him. That’s huge, actually.”
“It is. That shows he’s progressing, not regressing. And look how well he’s been dealing with other things; how well he’s been running that business. It’s like a well oiled machine. Look at the rep he has; he’s got clients pouring in, he’s got umpteen people wanting to work for him. He’s obviously doing something right or none of that would be happening. He’s doing so well, Esme. Especially considering everything that happened to him five years ago. And I know you love him; more than you love yourself. I also know you worry about him. But right now? You need to try and calm down and concentrate on yourself. And that baby you’ve got in there.”
“I don’t want to lose him to this. To his mind. I don’t…”
“There is nothing saying that is going to happen,” Riley gently interjects. “The things you’ve noticed? Stress can do all of that. Especially to someone whose brain is already vulnerable.”
“When I think of losing him, I think of the job. I think he’ll go out there one day and someone will kill him. I’ve almost kind of relegated myself to you, you know? That if old age doesn’t kill him, a bullet probably will. I mean, he’s a mercenary. I married into this life. And honestly, I’d rather lose him that way than his brain deteriorate and watch him slip away.”
“Esme…” Riley firmly clasps her sister’s face in her hands. “...listen to me. I would not lie to you. About anything. But certainly not about Tyler. I don’t see what you’re seeing, sweets. I don’t.”
“You don’t live with him. I see it. I’m not making this up.”
“I’m not saying you’re making it up. I’m saying maybe you’re reading too much into it. We all know that you can be a little neurotic…”
“I’m not being neurotic. I see these things. That’s my husband. The father of my kids. I see what’s happening to him.”
“I think what you’re seeing isn’t as bad as your brain is telling you it is. I think you’re stressed and you’re overwhelmed and your brain is making a bigger deal out of things than it needs to. Do you really think the business would be this successful if he was losing his mind? Do you really think he’d be able to step it up and take care of you and those kids? Do you think he would have recognized he needed help and called me?”
“No…” she sniffles. “...I guess not.”
“Sweets, you need to just try and take it easy, alright? I highly doubt things are as bad as your brain is making them out to be. Considering everything he’s been through and everything he’s been dealing with? Tyler is functioning very well. You have to admit that; that he has surpassed every doom and gloom bullshit those doctors gave you.”
“He has. He totally proved everything wrong. And he keeps proving them wrong. Every day. He’s so strong, Ry. He is the strongest person I have ever known. And when I think of a life with him being that way …”
“Then don’t think about it. You’re your own worst enemy, you know that? Esme, he is fine. Do you really think if something was going to go wrong with the brain injury, it would have taken almost thirteen years?”
She shakes her head.
“It would have already happened. You see how well he’s doing. How far he’s come. He’s fine, Me-Me. I think you’re overwhelmed and you’re tired and you’re worried and it’s just making things seem worse. You need to take it easy, alright? It’s not just you to worry about now.”
“This is the last thing I expected. Another baby. I mean, I’m forty-two years old.”
“That’s not exactly old. Women are having babies into their fifties these days.”
“Yeah, well they’re fucking insane. Number eight, Ry. EIGHT. Knowing my luck, nine too.”
“I highly doubt it’s another set of multiples.”
“What if there’s something wrong? Because of my age? What if…?”
“Then you deal with it. You’re not in this alone. You’ve got an incredible man in your corner. Who loves you so wholly and completely. Right to his very soul. If any couple can raise a baby with issues, it’s you guys. Look at everything you’ve been through together. Everything that would have destroyed weaker couples. You guys just kicked ass and kept going on. And that’ll happen again; if it has to.”
“I just worry I won’t be good at that kind of thing. Being that kind of mom.”
“Esme, you ARE that kind of mom. Look at Tanner. All his issues. Look how you’ve handled that. How you stepped to fight for what he needs and what will help him thrive. You’ve gone to bat for that kid over and over again and you and Tyler are raising him to be an amazing self advocate. You already ARE that mom.”
“I never thought about it that way,” she admits. “I guess I don’t think of TANNER that way. I don’t look at him and see his diagnosis. I just see him. I just see Nugget. And how well he’s doing. I mean, he struggles and we have to help him from time to time, but he’s done way better than we expected him to. And every day he gets more and more amazing.”
“Because of how you and Tyler are raising him. Don’t you see that? He’s doing that well because of the mom and dad he has. Because you two love those kids with everything you have. And there’s nothing that stands in your way when it comes to providing for those kids and making their lives incredible. Give yourself some credit, okay? You are a good mom. A damn good mom.”
“Sometimes I think I am; that I’m doing alright. But then Millie comes along and totally blows that out of the way and makes me feel like a shit mom.”
“Millie is also two years away from being a teenager,” Riley reasons. “An asshole teenager, at that. She is her father’s daughter; she’s stubborn and she’s tough as nails and she does not give an inch when she thinks she’s right about something. Hell, she doesn’t even give it if there’s proof she’s wrong.”
“She hates me. She’s hated me since she was six years old and I lied to her about Tyler being hurt and in the hospital.”
“She doesn’t hate you. You’re her mother. You know what she IS doing though? Holding a grudge. Because like I said, she’s her father’s daughter and she’s stubborn as fuck. Probably even more stubborn than he is. And I bet the old puberty monster is howling on the doorstep and that’s only going to make things worse.”
“She’s starting to develop. Told Tyler the other day she needed to get a bra.”
“Oh shit…” Riley can’t help but snicker. “...that must have gone over well.”
“I think he aged ten years in about thirty seconds. That was NOT what he wanted to hear. That’s his little girl. His first daughter. His miracle baby. The thought of her having boobs and getting her period and boys paying attention to her? He just can’t handle any of that.”
“Well, he doesn’t need to worry too much about the boys. They get out of hand? Millie will kick their asses herself.”
“Yeah,” Esme laughs. “She most certainly will.”
“Now…” Riley loops her sister’s hair behind her ears. “...your ever adoring husband called me about an hour ago and asked me to come over. Take care of the things in the house that you’re so worried about. Shaena’s out shopping and she’s going to get someone to come here and do your hair and your nails the morning of the wedding?”
“Really?” Tears well in her eyes once more. “She’s doing all that?”
“The girls’ hair too. It’s all taken care of, alright? And she’s going to pick everyone’s dresses up and bring them here. So that’s a few things off your list already. You know what else he told me? That you didn’t sleep well last night. And he’s worried. Already in protective daddy to be mode. So, I’m here, and I will cross off whatever I can on your to-do list. Alright?”
“You don’t have to, Ry. You don’t…”
“I want to. You’re my sister. This is my family too. And when things need to get done, we step up and we help each other out. How many times have you and Tyler done that for me and Shaena? When we’ve been working or we’ve gone away and the kittens need to be looked after? You guys always step up. So, we’re returning the favour.”
“Thank you. I really DO need sleep. And Desi won’t be back for a while; he took the kids and Alannah shopping and to a movie.”
“That means you have time for not just a nap, but a long, hot bubble bath. Unfortunately, you can’t have your usual glass or two of wine with it.”
“Glass or two?” Esme scoffs. “More like the whole bottle some days.”
“Sadly, you can’t indulge. I could make you a tea. Bring it up to you?”
She nods. “Tea sounds perfect.”
“Everything’s going to be okay,” Riley assures her, then pulls her into a tight hug. “Things happen for a reason, right?”
Esme laughs. “You’re sounding like Tyler.”
“Well what can I say?” She presses a kiss to her sister’s cheek. “The Aussie’s starting to rub off on me.”

I Want to Believe (Branjie) - Athena2
Summary: A believer and a skeptic shouldn’t work. Everything about them clashes. But somehow Vanessa ‘Spooky’ Mateo and Brooke Lynn Hytes manage just fine. (an X-Files au one shot)
A/N: So this is…something. I honestly don’t know what to call it. It’s not inspired by any specific episode of the X-Files, and you don’t need to be familiar with the show to read this. Thank you Writ for betaing and supporting this, you’re the best. I’d really appreciate any feedback you have!
(Now)
Everything about them clashes, but the most obvious is their desks.
Vanessa’s is messy and haphazard. Week—and maybe even month, by the smell of one—old coffee cups are scattered along the surface and obscuring the lone photo on her desk, drops of coffee sticking to her computer keyboard and staining her stacks of newspaper articles, with quotes circled in frantic red pen. Not an inch is clean, even the drawers covered with taped-up newspaper articles and blurry photos, the insides crammed with handwritten accounts and old books of mythical creatures and her chip stash. Everything is urgent—Vanessa works with a breathless passion that moves into her desk, everything she cares about laid bare on the surface for all to see, with the sense that she was working as fast as she could, wanting to find things (find the truth) before it was too late.
Brooke’s is just like her: neat, sparse, and secretive. She wipes the top down each week with Lysol, getting rid of her own coffee remnants. She keeps all her notes in a fancy leather notebook in handwriting so neat it looks typewritten, all her files in alphabetical order in a folder. There’s nothing personal on the top, save one picture. The bottom drawer is where Brooke really is, hidden behind metal like the real Brooke. That’s where she keeps the Snickers bars she sneaks on the sly, where she keeps the plush kitten keychain she likes to smooth her hands over, even the trashy magazines she pretends not to read. Her dedication is there in the notes and files and endless searching, not stopping until she has answers—answers that usually contradict Vanessa’s. Brooke’s own form of truth, but one no less hard-fought for.
A believer and a skeptic. Everything about them clashes. They shouldn’t work. But considering the lone photo on both their desks is the same photo, of them locked in an embrace, they somehow do work.
—-
Two Years Ago (Then)
Spooky Mateo.
They’re transferring Brooke, and gone are her days of a private office with her own secretary, solving high-profile murder cases late into the night.
No, she’s being led down, down, down, deep into the bowels of the FBI building, through freezing halls and over floors that haven’t seen a mop since the Reagan administration, all to receive her new moldy basement office with a woman who’s the butt of nearly every FBI joke.
Vanessa ‘Spooky’ Mateo, so named because of her fascination with the paranormal, supernatural, and general what-the-fuckeries.
Kids missing with no explanation? Mateo was there, insisting some blurry photo contained a UFO. Weird murders with lots of blood loss? There’s Mateo reading vampire lore from an old book. People acting weird? Alien cult, Mateo would claim, citing some obscure news clipping.
“Here you are,” Ariel says, stopping at a door. “Have fun.” She’s gone with a smirk, and Brooke can just imagine the laughing she’ll do upstairs.
Brooke takes a breath and steps inside. It’s just a temporary reassignment. New policy says Mateo has to have a partner, and Brooke got the shaft. A few months down here, tops, and she’ll be back in her clean office with her personal coffee machine and real cases, not aliens, actually using her former doctor knowledge.
The office smells like wet dog and coffee. There’s an empty desk crammed against the wall that must be Brooke’s, and the other desk—at least Brooke thinks it’s a desk and not an abstract art piece of newspapers and coffee cups—is Mateo’s. She’s currently hovering over a newspaper, pen behind her ear, poking into her wavy brown hair, and another in her hand, scribbling notes in the margins. She’s so focused that Brooke has to clear her throat three times before she snaps up like she got shocked.
“You must be Brooke!” Vanessa jumps out of her chair and runs to Brooke, pumping her hand up and down and forcing Brooke to balance her box of desk stuff single-handedly. She’s kind of cute, now that Brooke sees her up close and not walking the opposite way. Her soft brown eyes are wide and passionate, her teeth dazzling in the dim lights, an oversized wool cardigan pulled over her button-down, no doubt to ward off the chill down here.
“That’s me. And you’re Vanessa.”
“Yep! Here’s your desk.” Vanessa nudges her into the corner. “It’s small down here, but not so bad. It does get cold, though. I have an extra jacket if you need it.”
Brooke nods, loosening her white-knuckle grip on her box and brushing layers of dust off the desk. With a little dusting and polishing, it might not be so bad. Oh, who is she kidding. The computer probably hasn’t been turned on in 20 years and her teeth are practically chattering and her chair is held together with duct tape.
She takes another breath and sits. The chair is actually comfortable, a small beacon of hope in this dungeon. Brooke has a better view of Vanessa’s side of the room, and the papers taped to the wall make her head explode, eyes pulled in fifty directions. Pictures of supposed UFO’s. Articles on disappearances, people sharing their alien abduction stories. Blown-up crop circle designs. Pins in a map signifying something Brooke doesn’t know. And right in the center, a poster proclaiming I Want to Believe.
“Look.” Vanessa’s in front of her desk, hands on her hips, looking like a little kid playing tough. “I know they sent you here to babysit me. I know no one believes me. And I know you can’t wait to get outta here. But give me one case before you judge anything. Just one, okay?”
Brooke thinks. She could refuse, march upstairs and demand her old office back. But something in Vanessa’s voice, or her eyes, fiery with determination, makes Brooke pause, something burning in her stomach. Snap judgments are unwise, she knows that. Working here, she has to think critically, look at all the pieces before she assembles them. And Vanessa did offer her a jacket, a kindness Brooke hasn’t seen from anyone else in this building. Brooke doesn’t want to run upstairs complaining like a little kid, either. Knowing her co-workers, they probably have an office pool going on how long she’ll last, and Brooke wants to prove them wrong, cost them some money.
“All right,” Brooke says. “What have you got?”
—-
(Now)
Their clothes are the same, standard uniform, yet still brimming with their differences.
Vanessa wears her suit exactly as she should, with slight modifications. The jacket comes off at her desk, replaced with a worn cardigan that’s soft and cozy like a blanket. Her top two shirt buttons are usually undone, because she didn’t like the collar squeezing her. You’d never doubt she’s FBI from the proud, brash voice she announces herself with, the way she appears much larger than she is, but Vanessa still keeps her badge in her right waist pocket, easy to whip out and proclaim FBI, like people do on TV. Brooke insists on ironing the suit for her, and Vanessa watches, mesmerized, and Brooke brings out sharp lines in the fabric. Vanessa will usually try it on after she’s done, relishing in the warmth, letting Brooke adjust her sleeves and collar and kiss her hands and neck. She’s happy every time that suit wrinkles because it means ironing day, means Brooke’s kisses.
Brooke wears her suit exactly as she should: perfectly pressed, shirt buttons done all the way up, her shoes shiny enough to see your reflection. Her badge is kept in her left breast pocket for easy access, to show people even though her attitude makes it clear she is who she says she is. After years in loose scrubs, she likes the stiffness of the suit, the crisp lines and how it seals her up inside it, feeling safe and important with that suit on. It’s a point of pride for her when she puts it on in the morning. Vanessa’s hands often slip around her chest before she puts her shirt on, clothing Brooke’s bare skin with her warm hands. Vanessa will always say how she loves a woman in a suit, peppering kisses up Brooke’s chest and neck as she buttons the shirt for her. Vanessa’s kisses are another reason she loves the uniform.
—-
(Then)
Vanessa snickers as Brooke grips the door handle.
“Is the big bad agent afraid of my driving?” She teases.
“Not you. Just the road’s so bumpy,” Brooke explains.
It’s true the road is bumpy, flanked by dark woods and endless fields where they’d never find you. They’re past the point of radio signals, to where even Google maps can’t help you if you get lost. There’s a stillness and silence out here she likes, that reminds her of dry, dusty summers as a child, reading about aliens by flashlight.
“You’re not taking me out here to murder me, are you?” Brooke asks feebly.
“I wouldn’t tell you if I was, would I?” Vanessa smiles and to her surprise, Brooke returns it, her face looking like it’s about to crack from the gesture.
Brooke isn’t exactly what Vanessa suspected. Vanessa knows all about her, knows she has a medical degree and was top of her FBI class a year before Vanessa was top of hers. Brooke is good, a rule-follower, but very dedicated. She stays as late as Vanessa to finish a case, genuinely checking on people in the hospital after their case was solved. She’s annoyed with her reassignment, Vanessa can tell, but Brooke is giving her a chance, which is more than she can say of anyone else.
Brooke’s got her nose buried in Vanessa’s notes, biting her lip as she reads. There’s been strange disappearances and reappearances for weeks, with no pattern: a toddler one day, a senior citizen the next, college kids and preteens following. All were gone for a few hours and woke up in their rooms with no memory beyond flashing lights and strange faces—hallmarks of extraterrestrial abductions, things Vanessa’s studied for years. Vanessa hasn’t found any leads, but a woman contacted her, believing she knows where the next disappearance will happen.
Even Vanessa treads lightly with psychics—it’s an easy thing to fake, if you do research or have excellent deduction skills—but the woman’s phone call had been desperate, begging Vanessa to visit before another disappearance happened.
Brooke looks up from the notes. “So,” she begins skeptically, “this woman thinks she knows where the next event will happen?”
“Yes. Says she’s been having visions and realized they matched the disappearances on the news.”
Brooke scoffs.
“Guessing you never had your palm read or anything?” Vanessa asks.
“It’s all fake. They look through your bag or something, or pick something so generic it can’t be wrong.”
Vanessa sighs. Brooke’s not entirely wrong, but with a stubbornness Vanessa might struggle with. She’s not trying to turn Brooke into a full believer like her, but some acknowledgement that weird shit just happens, no explanation, would be nice.
“A lot of them are fake, yeah,” Vanessa admits. “But sometimes they’re not. One time a psychic told me something my mom always says, word for word. There’s no way she could have known. Another told me my notebook was in the fridge, and it was, I dropped it without knowing. And another time—“
“But those are the exceptions,” Brooke insists. “The majority are fake, or just lucky guessers. There’s always a scientific explanation.”
“I’m not saying science is fake and don’t vaccinate your kids, Mary!” Vanessa exclaims to a sheepish chuckle from Brooke. “All I’m saying is that some stuff can’t be explained. It can’t.”
“Yeah, but I can’t write ‘unexplained’ in someone’s report. There has to be something real to write.”
Brooke’s clinging to her orderly worldview, not that Vanessa can blame her for that. Who would question everything that’s so solid and real to them? Brooke’s a hard nut to crack, but Vanessa has a feeling that what’s inside will be worth the effort.
“But you have to admit that unexplained fits sometimes. Weird markings on people’s bodies with no other injuries. Disappearances with no other explanations. Photos of creatures—“
“Those can be faked.”
“But sometimes, Brooke, just sometimes, weird things happen and you can’t explain them.” If she can convince Brooke of this, she’ll consider it a win. Someone to at least try to understand her, to acknowledge that her years of research have merit. This has been her life for years, trying to find proof of what others wouldn’t consider.
“Maybe.”
Vanessa turns into the woman’s driveway so hard Brooke slams against the door.
“Sorry.”
“I’m good,” Brooke says.
Vanessa’s not one for stereotypes, but the cottage before them…well, it could definitely be used as a set for a witch house in some horror movie. Rows of plants curl toward them along the path, ready to pull them into the soil. The circular windows watch them like eyes, following every move. Jagged wooden steps like broken teeth lead up to a crooked, scratched purple door that Vanessa knocks, vowing to show no fear in front of Brooke.
The woman who answers is younger and prettier than Vanessa expected, not a wart or frog or crooked finger in sight.
“Vanessa Mateo, FBI—“
“—Brooke Lynn Hytes, FBI.”
She and Brooke turn to each other, wondering why they didn’t sort out who would speak first.
“First day working together, I see,” the woman says. “I’m Scarlet. Come on in.”
Vanessa sticks her tongue out at Brooke and they step inside.
“Tea?” Scarlet offers. “The water should be ready. I’ve got green tea and berry tea aside, I knew you were coming.”
Brooke stiffens beside her. Vanessa’s favorite is berry tea, and she’s guessing from Brooke’s pale yet composed face that green tea is hers.
She elbows Brooke playfully as they sit.
“Lucky guess,” Brooke whispers.
Scarlet puts the mugs in front of them and fidgets in her seat.
“Is this gonna be like an interrogation?” she asks fearfully.
“No,” Vanessa soothes. “Don’t you worry, you’re not in trouble at all. We just wanna hear about your visions, okay?”
Scarlet nods, and Brooke pulls out her notes.
“Whenever you’re ready,” Brooke says. Her tone is calm and even, not stressing Scarlet, and it’s a point of approval for Brooke in Vanessa’s book. So many people would have demanded answers or spooked Scarlet, but Brooke is surprisingly gentle even if skeptical.
“I’ve always seen stuff,” Scarlet begins. “Knew when my grandma was coming over, knew my birthday present before I opened it. But the last few months I’ve been having these dreams. There’s flashing lights and numbers and these big dark smudges in the sky. I didn’t think anything of it till Yvie–she’s my girlfriend–had the news on, and the house number where one of the disappearances happened matched a number in my dream. And they’ve all matched since then. Except one. The most recent one. I think it’s where the next disappearance is gonna be, and it’s tonight. I can feel it.”
The only sound is the scratching of Brooke’s pen. Vanessa is riveted in her seat. Flashing lights and dark smudges are very promising signs, a hint that this is beyond the natural world, like she thought.
“What’s the number?” Vanessa asks.
“256. It’s a green house with white shutters. Morning-something Lane is the street name. That’s all I saw.” She pauses, looks at them in concern. “Will that help?”
“It helps a lot,” Vanessa assures her, and it does. They have the day to find this house, and with Scarlet’s tip, it shouldn’t be so hard. They can stop another person from disappearing, and there’s a new spring in Vanessa’s step as they thank Scarlet and head outside.
“So,” Brooke prompts.
“So.” Vanessa’s not going to gloat about Scarlet, but she’s not giving an inch either.
Brooke sighs. “Well, we need to find the house and get the people out. Tell them there’s a gas leak or something so they’ll listen. Problem solved.”
Vanessa nods, because that was her plan too. Except for one thing. “Well…”
“Well what?” Brooke demands, and the tiny crease in her forehead is almost cute, proves that her perfect face is very human.
“Get the people out, yes. But I want to watch the house tonight. I want to see if anything happens. And I want you to come with me.”

(Now)
Bedtime is Vanessa’s favorite thing with Brooke. It was something they used to do differently, something Brooke changed to help Vanessa sleep better. Vanessa used to hate sleeping, would bury herself in work until she passed out at the kitchen table. She’s always afraid of the dreams. Dreams of all the things that happened when she was little, crying into her blankets because no one believed her. She burrows into the mattress when she sleeps, blankets snug around her like it will keep the dreams from exploding out. With Brooke, she doesn’t have to be scared. She snuggles against Brooke, Brooke’s arm secure around her, holding her down. When she does have the dreams, when she mumbles into her pillow and cries out in her sleep, Brooke is there, gently kissing the back of her neck and telling her it’s all okay, she’s there and won’t let anything hurt her. She’s never slept as well as she does with Brooke.
Brooke was never one for sharing a bed. She liked to sprawl out on her mattress, tug all the blankets over her, roll over and not have to worry about hitting anyone. She could sleep with files and notes littering the sheets and no one would care. But with Vanessa, bedtime has become something special. Brooke sprays their pillows with a calming lavender spray she thought might help Vanessa sleep. She usually tucks Vanessa in and then slips behind her, holding her close. Brooke never craved another person against her chest while she sleeps, but she can’t imagine sleeping without Vanessa there now. And when Vanessa thrashes against her, whimpering in her sleep, Brooke does all she can to keep Vanessa together and calm her down. She’s never slept as well as she does with Vanessa.
(Then)
256 Morning Bird Lane is in the middle of nowhere, because of course it is.
“Can’t these aliens ever land in a city?” Brooke complains. “At least near a freaking grocery store or some sign of civilization.”
The emptiness is making her uneasy. She and Vanessa are parked in some lot across the street from the house, and there is literally nothing for miles. Brooke’s a city girl. She likes trying new restaurants every week and having hundreds of grocery stores to choose from and never being far from a hospital should disaster strike. She likes knowing there are people around, even if she appreciates the anonymity from those people that a large city grants her. Sure, people suck when they smash into her on the subway during her commute or hold up the line arguing over coupons, but at least they were there. There’s nothing like that here, no glow of city lights or hum of cars, no knowledge that people are nearby, living lives as complicated as yours. There’s nothing but trees and darkness and silence, and the hair on Brooke’s neck is standing up at the thought. She’s grateful Vanessa is here with her, to save her from the abyss of silent solitude.
“So you do think it’s aliens,” Vanessa challenges.
“Absolutely not. I don’t care if Jabba the fucking Hutt himself drops out of the sky. I just can’t wait to get out of here.”
Vanessa shrugs. “We lived out in the country when I was little before we moved. It’s not so bad. And I brought snacks if you’re hungry, y’know.”
“I’m fin–are those Snickers?”
“Yeah.”
Brooke reaches in Vanessa’s bag and pulls one out, letting chocolate and peanuts fill her mouth. At least she has candy, a reminder of the city vending machines and check-out counters that await her.
“Scarlet told me they’re your favorite.”
Brooke’s heart stops. “You’re shitting me.”
Vanessa tries to keep a straight face, but she caves with a mighty laugh. “Yeah, I’m kidding. I just grabbed ‘em because they’re my favorite too.”
“Oh.” Snickers are Vanessa’s favorite candy. It’s a pointless fact, no value in knowing it. But it feels important to Brooke somehow, like it’s a part of Vanessa uncovered. What is a person, really, other than a collection of things they love? Christ, this middle-of-nowhere shit is making her philosophical. Soon she’ll notice how gorgeous Vanessa looks in the moonlight.
They eat their candy and lapse into silence.
“What made you join the bureau?” Vanessa asks.
“I started doing medical consulting with them a few years ago. Then the bureau offered me a full position, working cases and helping with the medical stuff. Said they’d pay off my med school loans and my bureau training fees, and I was in so much debt after med school it seemed like a good idea.”
She’s always wanted to help people. Brooke had gone into medicine for that reason, to help people and give them better lives. An old mentor of hers from med school recommended Brooke as an FBI consultant, and she answered questions about murders and injuries for stony-faced, black-suited agents. She couldn’t help but hope they’d show up every day, bring her a big case to help with, bring a killer to justice and prevent more people from being hurt. Bring her excitement she didn’t know she was missing. Her life as a doctor wasn’t boring, but when she heard the FBI was coming it gave her a thrill like nothing else. When they offered her the job, she realized all she wanted was to be part of that world, to be one of them instead of their consultant.
She doesn’t tell any of this to Vanessa, though. What’s the point? This should just be a few months of partnership. No need to bare her soul to Spooky Mateo.
She’s not quite as spooky as Brooke thought, though. She’s almost sweet, soothing Scarlet and packing stakeout snacks. There’s a bravery in her, the way she marched up to Scarlet’s house without an ounce of fear. Vanessa’s a fighter, Brooke can see all the traits she herself carries present in Vanessa, in her determination to keep going and boldness to just go after what she wants because there’s no other way she’ll get it.
“Well, I’m glad you joined,” Vanessa says. “It’s kinda nice to have you here.”
“Just kinda nice?” Brooke teases.
“Yeah.”
Brooke snorts against her will. “How did you join the FBI?”
Vanessa smirks. “You wondering how Spooky Mateo ended up here, aren’t ya?”
“Maybe a little.” Brooke’s grateful the darkness hides her burning cheeks.
“I don’t blame you.” Vanessa shrugs. “I just wanted to help people, really. People who don’t get listened to.” She takes a breath. “When I was little, weird shit always happened. Flashing lights and dark things in the sky. Weird shadows in my room. Sometimes my toys would move around on the shelves. One night I swear I saw some sort of creature. Something not natural. Everyone said it was my imagination, but it was real. My parents dragged me to all these doctors, and eventually they decided moving to the city might help. The things stopped happening after that, but I never forgot them. And that’s what I wanted to investigate. Stuff you couldn’t explain.”
She really does believe what she’s saying. Brooke’s interviewed enough people to recognize honesty. But can Brooke believe her? Her rational side kicks in. Boredom in the country could have caused Vanessa’s overactive imagination, which calmed down with the city’s stimulation. It makes sense. But Vanessa shaped her entire life and career around those events. She wants to find the truth, and Brooke respects her for it, even if that truth isn’t hers.
“You don’t have to believe me,” Vanessa says. “But that’s why.”
“I–” Brooke freezes when the time on the car dash crosses her vision. It can’t be right, it can’t be. She checks her watch. No no no. “Vanessa?”
“Yeah?”
“The last time I checked the clock, it was 10:51. I know it.” Brooke swallows hard and points to the time now.
10:43.
“Shit,” Vanessa breathes.
Brooke blinks, and the time flickers to 10:51. Maybe it was her imagination–there’s a sudden gust of wind, enough to make the car shake. The dashboard lights blink on and off, the car headlights throwing light all over then fading into darkness.
“Vanessa!” Brooke yells over the howling wind, but no answer. Brooke closes her eyes against the blinding lights, can’t see Vanessa beside her.
The radio switches on despite having no signal, classic rock and then pop and then something unintelligible blasting through the speakers and rattling the windows. The bottles in the cupholder shake in place, liquids bouncing all over the plastic. There’s a loud whirring sound above them, a black shape blocking out the moon and throwing beams of light that bounce off the house across the street before vanishing all at once.
The clock changes to 10:52.
Brooke’s chest burns as she takes her first breath in she doesn’t know how long. Her knees are up against her chest to protect her, and her sweaty, tense hand is currently being squeezed by Vanessa, who is in the middle console of the car, half-in Brooke’s lap. Vanessa’s hand is soft and warm, her body solid and soothing against her, and Brooke is almost sad when she lets go and shifts into the driver’s seat.
“What the fuck was that?” Brooke demands, still trying to get her breathing under control.
“I don’t–” Vanessa’s chest heaves as she draws in air “–I don’t know. But it had to be the cause of the disappearances. Just like Scarlet said. Some kind of space–”
“Don’t say spaceship.” Brooke’s rational brain churns to life, trying to turn what she’s seen into something real, something concrete and logical. Something that makes sense. “It was–it was probably a helicopter.”
“That was no fucking helicopter and you know it! Electrical disturbances, time malfunctioning, they’re all signs of extraterrestrial activity.”
“No, okay? No! There’s some logical explanation, and that was not some alien ship here to abduct someone.”
“I was right! You know I am!”
Vanessa takes a breath, and the silence fills the car to bursting. Brooke can’t do this anymore. Her mind is reeling and the argument is taking more energy than she has.
“Look, can we just go? I don’t want to be here anymore.” Brooke’s voice comes out smaller than she intends, and it softens the anger on Vanessa’s face.
“Yeah,” Vanessa agrees. “Let’s go.”
Vanessa reaches into the cupholder for her drink at the same time as Brooke and their heads smack into each other.
“Ow, shit!”
“What the hell kind of blockhead you got?”
The next thing Brooke knows, they’re laughing. Laughing to stay sane after what happened, to cling to each other, to go back to normal, even if that normal may not fit Brooke’s definition anymore. It’s the perfect thing to break the tension, and when Brooke locks eyes with Vanessa, the brown wide and soft before her, she wonders if this was meant to happen. If there is something beyond this universe, something bringing them together.
“What did you say before? About unexplained stuff?”
“Sometimes things just happen and you can’t explain them.”
“Yeah,” Brooke says.
And then they’re both leaning in, and the kiss defies explanation. Brooke’s lips melt against Vanessa’s, their hearts still racing and speeding up even more at their touches. Brooke rests one hand on Vanessa’s shoulder and the other on her thigh, two points of contact to ground her, prove that they’re both here, doing this. Vanessa is intoxicating, burying her hands in Brooke’s hair and pulling her closer, until their chests are touching and Brooke’s knee is against the gear shift but she doesn’t even feel it. It’s just them here, just them kissing, and when she pulls back Brooke thinks of Vanessa’s poster and knows that if she believes in anything, it’s Vanessa.
—-
(Now)
“Wanna get pizza tonight?” Vanessa asks.
“I kinda want burritos,” Brooke says sheepishly, and Vanessa rolls her eyes.
“Pizza tonight and burritos this weekend?” Brooke suggests.
Vanessa nods. The compromising is something she’s gotten used to, working together on things while accepting they still have their differences.
It’s been two years since Brooke was transferred down here, two years of taking cases no one thinks twice about and helping people the best they can. Two years of being partners at work and almost two years of being partners at home, of trying to cook and cuddling on the couch and sleeping together, making even things like grocery shopping and cleaning fun as long as they’re together.
Even if Brooke fights tooth and nail to scientifically explain everything, and Vanessa pushes for unconventional ideas, to consider paranormal events, they’ve still managed all these years. They work together perfectly, their ideas and methods often meeting in the middle. Vanessa’s odd sources getting them a real lead that Brooke’s formalities couldn’t. Brooke’s medical knowledge saving someone Vanessa would have thought gone. She knows Brooke doesn’t always believe, and that’s okay.
Because Vanessa believes in her, believes in them, and as Brooke takes her hand as they head out of the office, she knows Brooke believes too.

Hope’s Party
Summary: When Robin discovers that Hope has invited everyone but Alice to her birthday party, she takes it upon herself to stand up for the other girl. And to right a wrong concerning a certain ‘magical pony’ along the way.
  Emma Swan-Jones was by no means a bad person. She just honestly wanted her daughter to have the very best time for her sixth birthday.
  She had been planning it for months in advance. They had rented the field in the best park in town, gotten there the day before to get it decorated and ready, hired the dwarves to help prepare things, gotten Elsa to have a snow cone station at the ready, Ariel giving swimming lessons in the portable pool David had brought and set up for them, had Cinderella doing everyone’s face paints and even hired Granny and Ruby to prepare all the sweets and treats that were sure to give everyone a sugar high. They had even managed to get Anton and Snow’s help to include a pair of regular horses from the Nolan farm to pull along a carriage as well as the best surprise of all. It hadn’t been easy but Emma had finally managed to get her daughter an actual unicorn (or as Hope called it, a magical pony). They were fairly rare as of late and this one was still young and perfect – a light purple hint to its white coat with bright blue eyes and a light pink mane that rolled down the back of her neck and around the crystal white and sparkling horn sticking out just above her eyes.
  The unicorn was the crowning achievement on the perfect party. Snow hadn’t been very sure when Emma explained that Hope would be keeping her as a pet after the party was over, but as Emma explained, the unicorn was going to be hunted by dark magic users for her horn anyway. At least this way Emma and everyone else could keep it safe. It would live a good long life with Hope. Emma would make sure of it.
  So everything was set, planned, ready and waiting.
  It was all perfect…
  … Except for one thing.
  Alice Jones.
  Alice was Emma’s niece in law (it was actually much more complicated but everyone had adjusted to thinking of Rogers and Killian as brothers so that’s what everyone went with now) and she happened to be the same age as Hope and in the same class as her in school. She also happened to be the only person in the whole of the class that Hope did not want at her birthday party.
  “She’s weird, mum!” Hope had whined, stomping her pink sandal foot on the floor of their kitchen. “She does all this weird stuff! No one even likes her! She always goes and plays by herself and talks to the school hamster and says weird things about him! He can’t talk back to her but she pretends he does! I don’t want her ruining my party! It’s my party!”
  Well… It was her party. As mean as it might seem, it wasn’t right to force Hope to invite someone she didn’t want to be there. The whole day was meant to be about her and what did it even matter if Alice apparently didn’t have any friends? No one would notice her not being there and she probably wouldn’t even know what she was missing. Emma had seen Alice’s ‘weird’ behavior for herself the few times Rogers had asked her and Killian to babysit (though he only asked them if Rumple and Tiana were both busy). She did have a habit of talking to things – animals, plants, pictures – as if they could understand her and as if they responded. No wonder Hope was so upset with her being there. She’d probably spend the whole time having an endless conversation with the horses or the unicorn and take up the time from everyone else.
  In the end Emma gave Hope permission to not invite Alice.
  “But you need to send the invites by mail so as not to hurt Alice’s feelings,” Emma began explaining.
  “I will!” Hope said, not really listening and skipping out of the room, much happier now.
*O*U*A*T*
  The day of Hope’s party, Robin Hood-Mills was doing her absolute best to be as slow as possible getting ready and heading down the street. And it wasn’t just because her mother was forcing her into a lime green frock that had more frills on it than a dog did fur. She insisted on wearing her brown shorts and white vest underneath – fully planning on ditching the dress the second her mother turned her back – and pulled on a pair of brown boots so late that her mother finally gave in arguing with her about them in order to finally get her out the house. Zelena desperately needed Robin to go to this party, even if they ended up being late for it. Her daughter had been spending far too much time with her brother and the Merry Men in the woods and didn’t have any real friends at school. Zelena was determined to change that, whether Robin wanted to or not.
  So despite Robin’s best efforts, she soon found herself trudging down the street with a fat pouting scowl on her lips, kicking every loose object that happened to be lying down in front of her. Zelena kept telling her off, telling her to stop slouching, to smile, to stop pulling at the green ribbons she had put in Robin’s pig tailed hair, but she might as well have been talking to the pavement for all the good it did her. About halfway there she gave up trying, letting Robin sulk and instead focusing on rushing her fast enough that they didn’t make such a disastrous entrance by being too late to even sing happy birthday over the birthday candles.
  Halfway there, Robin happened to glance up and caught sight of a familiar face sitting by herself on one of the local street benches with a thick red book settled in her lap. It was Alice. Robin had seen Alice a lot in school but had always been hesitant to approach her. She always seemed to be enjoying whatever game she was playing and Robin felt very self conscious about interrupting her in case she wanted to be left alone. And while she didn’t want to interrupt her reading, she also saw another perfect opportunity to once again put off going to Hope’s party.
  “Be right back!” Robin declared, darting away before Zelena could stop her and rushing up to Alice.
  Zelena started to call her back, then hesitated and stopped as she saw where she was going. Her daughter was willingly approaching another girl her own age without Zelena prodding her back with encouragement the whole time. There was no way Zelena was going to ruin that!
  “Alice!” Robin said, coming to a stop in front of her. “Are you on your way to the party?”
  Alice looked up and smiled widely right up until Robin mentioned the party. At that she dropped her eyes back to her book and shrugged. “No.”
  Robin blinked. “You’re not? How come?” Had Alice found a way out of it? Could she get Robin out of it too?
  “I wasn’t invited.” Alice shrugged, ducking her head further down into her book so her messy blonde hair fell down and hid her face.
  “What?” Robin frowned. “Everyone was invited!”
  Alice shrugged again.
  “Why weren’t you invited?” Robin pushed.
  Alice finally looked up again. “Hope didn’t want me. She told me. She said she asked her mum if she could not invite me and she said yes.” She looked back down. “She said I’m weird.”
  Robin’s frown turned into a scowl. “Well who needs her dumb party!”
  “You don’t wanna go?” Alice blinked, surprised.
  “No!” Robin pulled a face and stuck out her tongue. “Hope’s annoying! And her party sounds boring!”
  “Even with the magic pony?” Alice said, wide eyed.
  “Roland told me it’s just a unicorn.” Robin shrugged. “And anyway. It shouldn’t be at a party. It should be free in the woods. Roland says it’s cruel to use it as a…” She paused. “I can’t remember what he said. But he said it was bad.”
  Alice glanced down at her book. “I wish I was there so I could set it free to run in the woods.”
  Robin glanced back at her mother, who suddenly was no longer in a great hurry to get Robin to the party now she was talking with Alice. Instead she seemed more interested in fixing her hair and clothes casually across the street. She looked back at Alice and smiled. “I gotta go to the party. Roland there already. But wait here for me, ‘kay? I’ll be real quick.”
  “Why?” Alice asked.
  “So we can play!” Robin said happily.
  She was already turning away when Alice called after her. “You don’t think I’m weird?”
  Robin looked back over her shoulder and grinned. “Yeah! That’s why I wanna play! Weird is fun!”
*O*U*A*T*
  When Robin and Zelena finally arrived, they were more than late. But despite Zelena’s fears that everyone would stare and point at them, the party was such a loud and busy event that no one even noticed their arrival. They slipped onto the field and made their way towards the table where all Hope’s presents were stacked one on top of another. Zelena quickly set down the gift she had brought for her (a cheap coloring set) before she turned to push Robin’s shoulder, meaning to nudge her towards the other kids. However she didn’t get the chance as she was already rushing off towards Hope, Alexandra and all the other girls crowded around a miniature toy car that Emma had enchanted to ride around passing out pink frosted cupcakes to everyone. Zelena smiled, proud that Robin was making a real effort to make other friends, before she turned to find Regina and the other adults hanging around the tables.
  Zelena had faded from view just as Robin reached the girls. She ignored all of them focused instead on Hope. It wasn’t hard to find her. She was dressed in a bright sunshine yellow frock with pink patterns swirling around the skirt and white flowers on the torso, and was the only girl who had a ridiculously large silver tiara balanced in her bright blonde hair. She also happened to have a birthday girl balloon in one hand and a plastic light up wand in the other that she was using to wave so enthusiastically, she nearly took Alexandra’s eye out twice before Robin had even reached them.
  As Robin got close enough she didn’t slow her pace. In fact she sped up, reaching her hands out and charging straight into Hope’s back. Her hands hit her shoulders and threw her forward and with her hands full, she failed to catch herself and hit the ground hard, narrowly missing the toy car whizzing around. The balloon slipped from her fingers, drifting towards the sky and her tiara slipped into a crocked position on her head.
  Robin then stood with her hands on her hips, frowning as Hope spluttered and gasped in shock, rolling and jumping back onto her feet. She rounded on Robin and immediately stepped up onto her toes so as to seem taller than the other girl she was normally nose to nose with.
  “You pushed me!” Hope accused.
  Robin responded by lifting her hands and pushing her again. Hope saw it coming, yet still was unable to stay on her feet, falling back down to the ground for a second time. “Yeah, I did!” Robin snapped, glaring down at her.
  Hope stared up at Robin, sat on the ground for a moment of surprise before her blue eyes began to bubble over. A moment later she threw her head back and screamed and howled loud enough to be heard by all the parents standing by the dinner table. Within seconds they all rushed over, Emma at the lead with Snow, Regina and Zelena following closely behind.
  “Honey! Are you okay?” Emma gasped, ducking and tucking her hands under Hope’s arms, helping her back onto her feet.
  “What happened, sweetie?” Snow asked, leaning over Emma’s shoulder.
  “SHHHHHHEEEEEEEE! PUSHED! MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!” Hope screamed, pointing the wand at Robin.
  “What?” Regina rounded sharply on her niece.
  “She did!” One of the girls said immediately. “We saw. She pushed her.”
  “Robin, is that true?” Zelena demanded.
  “She’s horrid!” Robin snapped, pointing back at Hope. “She’s awful and horrid and dumb!”
  “Robin!” Regina shouted angrily.
  “You apologies right now,” Emma said, frowning at Robin while her hand dusted the grass blades off of Hope’s dress.
  “She should say sorry!” Robin snapped. “She made Alice feel bad!”
  “Alice?” Snow blinked. “Alice isn’t even here, is she?” She glanced around like she might spot the messy blonde running in amongst everyone else.
  “No! She’s not!” Robin snapped. “Cause Hope didn’t let her come! She said she wasn’t invited!”
  There was a brief pause. “Hope.” Emma groaned. “I thought we said we wouldn’t tell Alice so not to hurt her feelings.”
  “Hold up.” Regina said, turning her frown onto Emma. “I’m confused. Why wasn’t Alice invited? I thought the whole class was coming.”
  “It’s a long story,” Emma said quickly.
  “She said Alice is weird so she wasn’t invited!” Robin shouted, fighting to break out of the grip Zelena now had on her to keep her from propelling herself on Hope a third time.
  “Emma?” Snow asked, frowning at her daughter. “I thought you said you were going to have Hope invite either all the girls or the whole class? Why did you let her not include Alice?”
  “It’s her party, okay.” Emma sighed. “She doesn’t get on with Alice very well.”
  “Last time I checked, all or none means all or none.” Zelena snorted.
  “Let’s not change the subject now!” Emma snapped, scowling at Zelena now. “Which is that your daughter was attacking mine!”
  “I was standing up for Alice! My daddy says always stand up for people!” Robin snapped.
  “Your daddy’s dead!” Hope snapped through her tears.
  “HOPE CHLOE SWAN-JONES!” Regina shouted.
  By this point, Emma just looked embarrassed and quickly reached down, scooping Hope into her arms. “I’m gonna go get her cleaned up.” She said.
  She started to walk away and Snow hurried after her. “Emma, seriously! What kind of lesson are you teaching your daughter? That it’s okay to exclude people if you call them names? You can’t let Hope invite everyone but Alice! How do you think the poor girl feels?”
  “Mum, with all due respect, Hope is my daughter and I’ll raise her how I want.” Emma said sharply. “This is Hope’s party and she’s going to have what she wants and invite who she wants.”
  Snow crossed her arms. “And say what she wants as well?” She challenged.
  Emma turned to Hope, still crying softly in her arms and frowned. “No. She will apologies for that.”
  At that, Hope began crying hard all over again. This was her party and now she was in trouble after Robin had pushed her down! It wasn’t fair!
  Meanwhile Zelena and Regina were in a heated discussion of their own back in the middle of the field. The vice like grip that Zelena had on her daughters arm had loosened slightly, allowing Robin to finally slip free and now she hovered, looking up as Zelena became outraged that Regina would even suggest Robin’s violent behavior was from her parenting.
  “You’re in trouble…” Someone suddenly sang into Robin’s ear.
  She jumped and spun around, then grinned at the sight of her older brother. “Yup!” She said cheerfully.
  “What did you do?” Roland asked.
  “Pushed Hope over.”
  Roland snorted and covered his mouth to smother a laugh, then reached over and ruffled Robin’s hair, causing one of her ribbons to become half undone. “Good girl. Anyway, I’ll see you later, okay?”
  “You leaving?” Robin said, her smile dropping hard.
  “This party’s boring.” Roland shrugged. “Gonna go into the woods and shoot some arrows.”
  Robin glanced up at her mother; still so busy arguing about just how much she lets Robin get away with at home that neither she nor Regina had even noticed Roland’s arrival. She looked back at him and grinned when she caught sight of something over his shoulder. “Wait for me. I need to change and I’ll pick you up!”
  Before Roland could ask what she meant by that, Robin had rushed passed him to the nearest flower bed. He looked at Zelena and Regina, then awkwardly began to shuffle away before they noticed him.
  While everyone continued to either party, argue, or hover around, Robin quickly stripped off the dress and threw it carelessly onto the bench. Then she broke into a hard run and dashed across the field as fast as her little legs could take her. She ran straight for the unicorn where it was drifting in amongst greedy children that were pulling poking and prodding its mane, sides and tail greedily. A few were even trying to jump up and grab its horn like it was a game rather than a piece of its body. Robin nearly stopped to push each of them over but knew she only had so long before her mother caught on to wha she was doing. Once she realized that, she would definitely get Regina or someone else to use their magic and drag Robin back to them before she could get away.
  So instead, Robin simply pushed those closest out of her way and jumped up. She managed to grab onto her back and slide her body around into a sitting position on top of her, reaching down and untying the loose rope around her neck that was being used to keep her from running off in the middle of the party. Once she was free, Robin lightly grabbed a hold of some of her long soft hair (it felt like feathers in between her fingers) and leaned forward. She then carefully nudged the unicorn’s sides with her knees and turned her around, directing her around and away from the kids and for the streets.
  Roland had drifted over to the present table, probably seeing if there was anything he could sneak into his pockets without getting caught, and Robin directed the unicorn straight towards him. She wasn’t much of a rider, so had a feeling the creature understood that they were escaping, since she immediately followed every direction and rushed straight over to the table. A few people were shouting after them and Robin heard more than one person scream her name (one or two might have even been adults) but ignored all of them.
  “ROLAND!” She called.
  Roland glanced up in time to see her and immediately jumped onto the table, kicking and scattering presents onto the grass around them. He trampled on a few parcels, no doubt breaking a couple under his heavy stomps, and was laughing when he reached out a hand and caught Robin’s. He jumped and landed on the unicorns back easily and the three of them jumped over the food table ahead of them, ducked around the people rushing around in their way, and shot out of the field and onto the streets.
  “Did they just…” Zelena said, her mouth falling open speechless as she watched their shape disappearing down the road.
  “Yes they did.” Regina nodded slowly.
  Zelena’s body tensed and felt her lips purse furiously. “That. Girl. Is-”
  “Just like her father,” Regina chuckled.
  Zelena blinked, turning to look at Regina for a moment. Then sighed and shook her head, but was unable to stop the smile pulling at the corners. A moment later the two sisters burst out laughing at the mess the Hood siblings had managed to cause after less than five minutes of arriving at the party.
*O*U*A*T*
  Alice was still reading her book on the bench where Robin had left her. She had slipped out the house so her papa wouldn’t see her sad face and ask her what was wrong but now she was even more lonely than if she had stayed inside. It had been nice when Robin had stopped to talk to her, but she’d gone to the party. And even though she said she wasn’t interested in going, she obviously had changed her mind after getting there. Alice had heard about all the things Hope was having and couldn’t help but feel a pang of jealousy at all the fun everyone else was having there.
  Just then an odd sound reached Alice’s ears. Like a clopping sound on concrete. She glanced up and her eyes widened at the shape that quickly grew larger as it approached. Within seconds she realized it was the magical pony that Hope had been bragging about (though now Alice could see it was definitely just a normal unicorn) and riding on its back was a boy Alice vaguely recognized and… Robin!
  “I’m back!” Robin called, pulling the unicorn to a stop in front of her.
  “Hope gave you her unicorn?” Alice gasped, her book completely forgotten as it slid off her lap and onto the floor as Alice climbed to her feet.
  Roland snorted loudly and Robin elbowed him. “Not exactly. But anyway! Who cares how! We’re gonna go set her free! Wanna come?”
  “Can I?” Alice beamed.
  “Duh! It was your idea!” Robin grinned.
  “Okay but we better go soon before Emma or Killian come chasing after us,” Roland laughed.
  Alice stepped forward and gently stroked the unicorn’s face, moving her fingers over her soft features with care the rest of the kids at the party hadn’t even been capable of. Smile smiled at the creature softly as she did. After a moment, she began whispering and leaning her forehead against the creatures face intimately.
  Roland frowned down at her. “What are you doing?”
  Alice glanced up and blushed slightly, remembering what Hope had said. “Uh. I’m just talking to her.”
  “You talk to animals?” Roland blinked.
  Alice hesitated, then nodded.
  “That’s awesome!” Roland beamed.
  “Told ya she was cool!” Robin said, grinning proudly.
  Alice was surprised by their enthusiasm but quickly found herself grinning back at them. “You think it’s cool?”
  “Hell yeah!” Roland said. “So what is she saying?”
  Alice paused, putting her ear near the unicorn’s mouth for a moment and listening to what Roland would describe as rumbles and huffs of breath. After a moment Alice looked shyly back up at them. “She’d like you to get off her now. She doesn’t really like people riding her.”
  “Oh! Sorry!” Robin and Roland rushed to climb off, each moving around to gently stroke her face and apologies in turn.
  “I’m serious though,” Roland said, glancing nervously behind them. “We should get going. Come on, I know a short cut to the woods.”
  With Roland leading the way, Robin and Alice stood on either side of the unicorn by her head and they began walking and guiding her along together. They moved quickly, very aware that there would be a number of people chasing after them by now, but Roland ducked them in and out of alley ways and behind buildings that kept them off the main street and shortened what would have been a much longer walk.
  “So does she have a name?” Robin asked, looking around the unicorn at Alice.
  Alice muttered to the unicorn, stroking her while she spoke then paused to listen. She looked up and shrugged. “She doesn’t have one.”
  “Should we give her one?” Robin asked.
  “Well you got to call her something!” Roland called back. “Can’t keep referring her as ‘The Unicorn’. What about Blaze?!”
  “Ugh, no! That’s a boy’s name.”
  “It can be a girl’s name.” Roland shrugged.
  “Well it’s not her name.” Robin turned back to Alice. “What do you think?”
  “Me?”
  “Yeah, you!” Robin laughed.
  Alice fell quiet, watching the unicorn closely for a moment as they walked the long way around the back of the Nolan farm, closing in on the woods. She concentrated so hard on a name that she began frowning and wasn’t quite looking where she was going, causing her to stumble a couple of times, although even that didn’t stop her from thinking hard about names and she barely reacted as she straightened herself back up and kept going. Robin resisted the urge to giggle and instead waited with uncharacteristic patients.
  “I know!” Alice said finally. “Frou-Frou!”
  “Frou-Frou?” Robin asked, testing the name out. She reached up and stroked the unicorn. “What do you say, girl? You like Frou-Frou?”
  In response she gently rubbed the side of her head against Robin and Alice in turn, giving Alice an extra lick along her ear and making her giggle. “I think she likes it!” Alice laughed.
  “Frou-Frou it is!” Robin grinned, rubbing the unicorn face.
  A moment later they had reached the edge of the wood. Roland paused, unhooking an old waterskin one of the Merry Men had given him from his belt. It belonged to his father and now he rarely went anywhere without it. He turned it up and let Frou-Frou have a long drink from it. He didn’t know when the last time she had any water was but no doubt would need some soon. She was in for a long run once she was free to head as far into the woods as she could get. She was smart, and would probably want to get far enough away to avoid any more run ins with anyone who might once again mistake her for a child’s pet.
  “I’m kind of sad to see her go,” Robin said, hugging Frou-Frou around the neck.
  “She’ll be fine,” Roland shrugged.
  “We can always visit!” Alice said excitedly.
  “That’d be fun.” Robin said, then reached over and took Alice’s hand in her own. “Let’s promise! Every day we’ll come here, after school, and see if she’s nearby. And every week we’ll go into the woods and look for her! Roland can help!”
  “Sure, Roland doesn’t mind wasting his weekends.” Roland said, rolling his eyes but Robin ignored him.
  “Okay!” Alice beamed.
  “You gotta promise!” Robin said immediately.
  “I promise.” Alice said firmly.
  “A proper promise!” Robin said suddenly.
  “What’s a proper promise?” Alice blinked.
  “We gotta kiss.” Robin nodded.
  “We do?”
  “Yeah. Cause boys spit on their hands and shake when they make promises. But I don’t wanna spit on my hand. So we can lick our lips and then it’s basically the same thing.” Robin said seriously.
  Roland bit his tongue to keep from laughing or correcting her. Little John had told him off for not letting his sister “have her fun” as he put it and in the end, this was a story he could happily file away for when Robin was older and more easily embarrassed.
  “Okay!” Alice nodded. The two made a point of sticking their tongues out and wetting their lips dramatically. “I promise!” Alice stated with Robin repeating after her before they leaned in and quickly pecked each other’s lips.
  “It’s a forever promise now,” Robin nodded seriously. “We can’t ever break it.”
  “Never ever.” Alice agreed.
  After they were finished, they watched Frou-Frou run off ahead of them, her beautiful light shaded body fading into the dark shadows of the safety of the woods. Roland was already bored, turning his attention towards the town to see if he could spot anyone chasing after them (almost hoping they would be so they could have an exciting chase) but Alice and Robin watched Frou-Frou go right until the moment she disappeared. Their forever promise to visit her often cemented in their newfound friendship.
  A friendship which might one day grow into something more…

Heart-In-A-Box
Tumblr media
I could get used to this, instead of saying hello, i just AHOY here and AHOY there. ANYWAYS. This is for  everyone who didn’t get a Valentines Day gift or don’t have a Valentine AT ALL. Don’t worry though, I have some Spidey Spice Doritios and a small thing of Ben & Jerrys if you wanna share with me. I KNOW, I WAS ALONE ON VALENTINES DAY. (Don’t rub it in, I’m emotional :( I’ll change my mind.)
However, I did get a nice smelling bottle of Sea Scrub peel off mask. Now I’ll smell like Ariel!!! :D
Tumblr media
I also got a red Birds Of Prey shirt and some small cookie biscuits. BUT.
I just wanted to make this imagine for everyone who didn’t get the Valentines Day that they wanted, and of course because of the title: IT’S A DADDY PATRICK IMAGINE!!! Brace yourselves! This may get a little bit spoopy!!!
Tumblr media
IMAGINE #2
Title: Heart-In-A-Box
Pairing: Patrick Hockstetter x Reader
Word Count:
Theme: Valentine’s Day.
For: Anyone who had a sucky Valentine’s Day, but for this imagine, I’ll put my name: Jae. (You don’t have to put up with my name :) Do what you want! You do you honey!!)
Warnings(?): Anatomy (guts, body parts, blood, etc.) A butchery, Just blood. IMAGINE WILL PROBABLY BE THE CRINGIEST YOU’VE EVER READ IN YOUR LIFE.
Scene: Reader is having a terrible Valentine’s Day. Nobody has given them a Valentine so they’re feeling left out, resulting in them to focus on schoolwork. On a field trip to the local museum for a science class, Reader slowly starts receiving Valentine’s gifts from a green eyed admirer.
PLAYLIST:
1. Love Hurts by Nazareth
2. Every Breath You Take by The Police
3. Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden
The sound of other students in the hallways of Derry High annoyed Jae.
It was the dreaded day; Valentine's Day.
Pink, white and red littered the entire school and it made her sick. What a way to rub in the pain that she was gonna be YET AGAIN alone on Valentine's Day.
Students, mostly pathetic little middle schoolers wore dumb pink and red outfits as they scurried around, giving each other bouquets of flowers, boxes of chocolates, and cringeworthy love letters.It seemed that someone, probably someone from the student body or arts committee wanted to make Valentine's Day this year special, hence why everyone was wearing either pink or red. Some idiots even came dressed as angels, pretending to shoot people with arrows.
It was disgusting.
Tumblr media
Jae was probably the only girl wearing a different colour. As she walked over to her locker, students stared at her and snickered.
"Looks like she has no Valentine." "She'll be a loner forever!" "Happy Valentine's Day Jae!" "What a LOSER." "Don't you mean LOVER?"
She barged through the laughing students, shoving a making out couple off her locker. After opening her locker and scrunching up some hurtful Valentine's Day cards from some neanderthal jocks and prissy skanks, Jae grabbed what she needed for the field trip to the museum. Her anatomy class was going to the museum as a part of an assignment on individual parts of the body.
Jae couldn't wait to get to the museum. As well as getting away from all these morons, it was no secret that Jae took a close interest into anatomy class. Her father was a butcher and her mother was a nurse so it wasn't her first time seeing blood and guts, whether it was a bonus help that she learnt about the nifty things that went on inside the human body, much to the other students' horror and disgust.
"So," An obnoxious voice rang in her ear followed by a loud POP!, "who ripped your heart out?" Greta smirked as she leaned against Jae's locker. Jae rolled her eyes, out of all the days that she didn't want to be tormented, today took the angel cake.
Enough was enough. Jae turned to Greta with a fake sad expression.
"You. When I saw you making out with Sally Mueller in the bathroom," she fake sobbed, "it broke my heart in two. How could you Greta?!"
Gasps erupted throughout the hallway followed by mean and taunting chants of "Greta likes girls." With an angry huff, Greta stormed off with all the attention now focused on her.
Jae's anatomy classmate, Beverly Marsh approached her locker in the direction of where Greta charged from. "Jeez, didn't know you and Greta were-"
"I'm not. I just got sick of her. Thought I might do some rumour spreading of my own. Anyways," Jae changed the subject onto the exciting excursion ahead, "what's your project about?"
"Feet and legs and what makes them work."
Jae nodded, not wanting to continue the discussion, due to her bored and slightly irritated tone. "You?"
"The heart." Jae responds, rolling her eyes at the ironic theme. Beverly gave a small smile before looking behind her. Her face dropped, scurrying off with a quick; "See you on the bus."
Instead of the cliche turn around, Jae shrugged before following Bev out to the bus where her anatomy class were waiting.
If only she did turn would she have met her green eyed admirer that would soon spoil her silly in the weirdest of ways.
---
After the lame presentation which was both interesting yet extremely irrelevant to Jae, the anatomy teacher granted the class permission to do individual exploring, where the students could either get something to eat or explore other parts of the exhibit.
Jae had her eye on the heart exhibit; it was a maze where there were info cards, hanging and touchable props and video diagrams on all walls. It looked like fun.
So, being a lone ranger, Jae headed directly to the heart maze. But she wasn't the only one.
It seemed that a certain someone had his green predatory eyes for Jae. Patrick Hockstetter was fascinated by her. He followed her around town and the idea that she was working on the anatomy of the heart made him fall for her. He loved that she liked what people would call macabre, he loved that she had an IDGAF attitude yet how devoted she was to her anatomy class. He loved that she was an all out badass.
And don't get him started on her beauty. She was SO MUCH prettier than the other girls of Derry. Her hair was so shiny and when he sometimes stepped behind her at the cafeteria and managed to smell her hair, her hair smelt like strawberries and cream and her skin smelt like the seaside.
He always thought of himself as a smooth operator, yet when it came to Jae, he couldn't muster up the balls to ask her out.
Patrick Hockstetter the chicken.
He didn't like the idea of that going around especially in front of his crush.
So since Valentine's Day was today, it was his chance.
He stood a decent feet away and got out the crumpled love note he was gonna pass to her on the bus. In his neatest writing, which was still messy, he wrote;
"WILL YOU BE THE FIRE TO MY LOINS? LOVE P.H"
As disgusting and cringy as it sounded, Patrick tried to be poetic and literate as he had caught Jae reading the novel "Lolita" on regular basis when the teacher forced him to go into the library instead of loitering with the other members of the Bowers Gang behind the gym. Wrapped in the paper was a small animal heart; in particular a chicken heart.
He clenched the paper, trying not to rip it or squish the heart. Patrick wasn't gonna chicken out now.
He scrunched it up and flung it at her. It hit her, the heart fell out of the paper and splatted on the floor and as she turned around, he disappeared into the other entry of the maze.
---
When she got to the heart of the maze, her eyes bulged as she saw a giant squishy heart in the centre that could be touched. She loved the idea of an interactive model. She pulled out her polaroid camera and took a photo of the model as she had been doing so through the maze.
When she checked the picture she noticed a tall figure in the background but it was blurry so she couldn't determine who it was. Right next to the model was an info card, basically explaining the model was a photo opportunity and that it instructed kids to not climb on the model. There were two small plates; one with another heart; this time a dog heart and the other plate with a small heart cake, there was a note attached that said; "Dissect me? P.H"
Tumblr media
This was the second note that she had received from 'P.H'. It was probably some stupid jock playing a prank on her. She knelt down at the little block with the info card nailed to it, grabbing her pocket knife and visciously stabbed it, noticing jam bleeding out of it. There was no way she wasn't ruining the dog heart.
"What is it with people today?" She yells, "Why me of all people to prank on Valentine's Day?! I bet you this is how you're gonna get me! You're gonna jump out and say; 'Ha Ha! Just kidding ya!' Well i'm not as dumb as you think, so knock it off!!!"
Patrick was watching the whole sight, obviously amused and a little hurt that she thought he was messing her over. Patrick crouched down next to her, coughing to get her attention. As soon as she looked at him, she pieced everything together;
PH=Patrick Hockstetter. The hearts= Rumors of him kidnapping and killing animals.
When she turned to him, he sat down beside her and pulled out a small heart shaped box. He really wanted to give her this gift but wasn't sure how she'd react to seeing the gift. "I got this," He rasped as he held out the box, "for you."
Tumblr media
Cautiously, she took the red box and lifted the lid. Inside was a heart. She picked it up to check if it was real. It was. It was bigger than the dog heart. His next two words made her slightly shudder.
"It's Human."
"Patrick, How'd you get it?" Jae asked, raising an eyebrow. On the inside she felt weak.
Instead of answering her, he lunged at her, planting his lips on hers. His lips were a bit slimy and chapped and although he did have a bit of bad breath but it didn't matter. Jae may or may not have had an attraction to him due to his mystery. She really liked him but everyone always kept her away from him. This was a dream come true.
"Pat," She asked when they departed from their soft kiss,
"Where'd the human heart come from?”

daddy’s girl
Amy always thought her dream job would be a Captain in the NYPD, but she’s been doing this parenting thing for seven years now and she’s really good at it and even though she now has a Captain hat, her own office and the duties she always imagined, it kind of sucks in comparison to coming home to her two incredible kids. Her husband is the perfect dad too, acing every diaper change, soothing them after nightmares and teaching their eldest to ride a bike. Much like when they were competitive detectives working opposite each other, she doesn’t need him, but they work best together. Cases always got solved a little faster when both Santiago and Peralta were assigned. It’s the same with parenting: she can look after their kids without him, but it’s a damn sight easier when he’s around.
This particular night he’s on a stake out with Rosa, trying to quell the recent re-emergence of Gigglepig onto the streets of Brooklyn. And Amy is totally, 100-percent in control, but Mia is refusing to eat her carrots and Sam just vomited all over her and she could really use her husband’s happy-go-lucky, everything-is-cool-cool-cool attitude.
He sends her a supportive text and a selfie of him giving her a thumbs up with an unsmiling Rosa in the background but it’s not quite the same thing.
With the carrot issue dropped for now and Sam all cleaned up, she concedes to the parenting equivalent of a white flag, allowing them to watch YouTube on the iPad while Amy sorts herself out and re-assembles. Mia chooses a Taylor Swift music video (Jake constantly playing her entire discography to Amy’s belly while Mia was inside successfully created another fan of the country-slash-pop singer-songwriter) and sings along loudly and obnoxiously while Sam grins and bobs his head next to her. It’s a truly adorable sight, but not one that is uncommon. She often returns home from work to Taylor Swift dance parties in the living room.
With the kids successfully distracted, Amy changes into one of Jake’s hoodies. It’s big and comfortable and makes her feel like he’s with her instead of parked in a car on a dark street throwing nuts in the air and catching them in his mouth. Sometimes she lets him wear his own hoodie again, just to help boost the smell of him for when she misses him. He calls her a cheeseball and teases her mercilessly for it, but loves it when she’s in his clothes.
She washes a bit of her son’s vomit out of her hair (oh, the joys of parenthood) and spends five minutes re-organising their fleet of rubber duckies when she accidentally knocks them over.
Back in their bedroom, she finds the kids no longer listening to Taylor Swift, instead swiping through Mia’s camera roll which is largely made up of her and Jake’s dumb selfies. There are double chins, cross-eyes and tongues stuck out of mouths galore.
“I miss daddy,” she pouts when she notices Amy.
“Me too, baby,” Amy says honestly. If the stakeout is a success, he should be home in a few hours. Before the kids arrived, Amy was forced to undergo months long separations from him. A few hours apart should be nothing, it should be healthy, but her heart aches without him. And their daughter, a certified daddy’s girl, has inherited Amy’s constant desire to be with Jake. Even though Mia knows he’s off “saving the city” like a Superhero “but way cooler” (his words), she’s very possessive of him and has frequently asked him to hide his superhero cape and stay home with her and Sam instead.
It breaks Jake’s heart and he has been known to work on some of his cases from home so he doesn’t have to leave his two biggest fans (after Amy, she will always be Number 1, his OG fan, as he likes to call her).
“Why don’t you draw daddy some pictures?” She suggests. Jake already has several framed drawings on his desk, as does Amy, and their fridge is decorated with them too, like a mini-Louvre. Jake proudly and audaciously declared a portrait of Amy as better than the Mona Lisa one time, which is so overrated, he tells her.
Without answering, Mia runs off to her room, grabs her art notebook and her box of crayons, returning to the master bedroom with her arms laden.
The fact that Amy just put clean bedding on before dinner is unimportant to her daughter as she tips the crayons everywhere and gets to work.
She draws daddy in his car on a stakeout, she draws Tia Rosa with a broad smile on her face, she draws Taylor Swift, Ariel, Moana and Mulan, she draws her and Sam and a golden retriever she wants to adopt. Amy has explained her dog allergies to her daughter countless times, but all her school friends have puppies and she wants one too. Mommy’s a badass Police Captain, she can handle a few sneezes!
It’s not until she’s read a bedtime story and both kids are asleep an hour and a half later when she’s drinking a much needed glass of wine in bed that she finds Mia’s best piece of work: a letter addressed to Jake. Amy can already feel the tears forming in her eyes as she reads Mia’s messy (but gradually improving) writing.
Daddy
I mish you and love you so much, my drling
Have u good day
Love from
Mia
The rest of the page is covered with odd-shaped hearts and kisses.
It’s the cutest thing Amy has ever seen in her life.
She takes a picture of it and debates sending it to Jake, but decides against it, wanting to see his face when he reads it for the first time. He’s definitely going to cry. Instead she reads and re-reads her daughter's words, her heart overflowing with love for the little family they’ve created.
When Jake gets home a few hours later, he tries not to wake her, but Amy is a damn good cop with super senses heightened by her terrible eyesight. He kisses her tenderly, murmuring how much he missed her and how good it is to be home against her lips. She shows him the letter and yeah, he totally cries, but Amy doesn’t have it in her to make fun of him because she’s crying too.
“Did you catch the bad guys by the way?” She asks as he strips off his clothes and crawls into bed.
“Of course. And I looked great doing it,” he responds with a proud smirk.

Winter Winds
Prologue: Crying in the Club
Next
Summary: Remy carries the sting of a thousand small cruelties. But he knows who he is, and he’s not going to change for anyone. After all, he’s never met anyone worth changing for.
Yet.
Warnings: underaged drinking, mentioned drug use, transphobia, enbyphobia, nbphobia, acephobia, arophobia, general ignorant asshattery
Remy is fifteen when he realizes that he has no friends.
He had always been popular- adults called him “charismatic” and “good with others” and a “social butterfly”. The kids called him “cool as fuck”. He held his head high, wore his shades inside, spoke sass like it was his native tongue. He didn’t walk, he sauntered.
For as long as he could remember he had been surrounded by people- people laughing with him, and inviting him to every event, and crowding around him at lunch, and maybe he kept them at arm’s length a bit but he still called them ‘friends’. But then one day his dad has to work late and Remy sat on the front steps on the school to wait for him, scrolling through apps on his phone, when one of the students sitting around him asks, “why doesn’t your mom just take you home?”
It feels like ice water over Remy’s head, and he’s glad he has his sunglasses on so they can’t see the way his eyes widen as he snaps his head to look at the girl who spoke. Her name is Emily and they’ve gone to school together since middle school, and Remy sees her almost everyday, and they talk at lunch and during science, and she has no idea that Remy’s mom is out of the picture. He looks around and realizes that no one in the crowd around him knows about the messy divorce his parents went through when he was twelve, how he started sleeping with his headphones on and blasting music to drown out the yelling and then never stopped because now he needs to drown out his own thoughts, and that his mom isn’t allowed to be around Remy unless his dad is there but she’d rather not be around either of them so it works out he guesses. They don’t know that it was Remy’s fault.
And if he’s really honest with himself? If they knew they wouldn’t care.
Because they’re not his friends.
Remy smirks, tilting his head to look at Emily over his glasses, “Gurl, you know I never miss an opportunity to loiter.” There are some laughs and chuckles, and Remy turns back to his phone and frowns, turning up some music so he doesn’t have to think about it.
~
“So you don’t like sex?”
Remy shrugged, scribbling in answers to the worksheet for her next class, “I don’t know. I haven’t decided yet.”
“But you said you’re asexual.”
She had said that, yes. She just hadn’t realized her coming out required a goddamn lecture, “Yeah, being ace doesn’t automatically mean you don’t like sex. It’s about attraction.”
“But if you’re ace and have sex, then what’s the point of even saying you’re ace?”
“It doesn’t work like that, it’s-” Remy let out a huff of frustration, turning to the boy hassling her, “you literally carry a supercomputer in your pocket. Put it to use and Google it, bitch.”
The other student rolled his eyes, “I’m just saying, you shouldn’t say you’re ace if you’re willing to have sex! It’s just pointless!”
“Not nearly as pointless as this conversation,” Remy deadpanned, gathering her things as she stood from the table.
“Where are you going?”
“I lose IQ when I’m subjected to bullshit for too long.” She doesn’t wait to hear any replies, just saunters off without a second glance.
~
Remy doesn’t know how she feels about sex. But she stops trying to figure it out. The last things she needs is more ammo used against her identity.
~
Kevin enters the picture in the middle of Remy’s sophomore year.
The junior had transferred from a school on the other side of town. It was another boy in their circle who introduced Kevin to the rest of them, otherwise Remy doubts he would have ever noticed the boy- blonde, average height, average build, so plain he could star in a Disney Channel show.
Remy didn’t expect to get along, if only because he spent their first meeting dragging the boy to Hell and back. “There are still people named Kevin?” He raised an eyebrow, “that’s so basic. Next you’re gonna tell me you have an Aunt June or something.”
“Um, well…” the junior seemed caught off guard by the snark, but flushed slightly at the last comment.
“Nooooo….” disbelief spread across Remy’s face, “You’re shitting me.”
He shrugged, “My dad has a sister named June.”
“Okay, well… You dad isn’t named like… John, or Bob, or whatever, right?”
“Uh….” Kevin glanced around the lunch table, searching for some kind of support, but was met with glances ranging from amusement to pity, “His name’s Carl?”
"For fucks sake Kevin,” Remy threw his hands up in exaggerated exasperation, “Let me guess your mom's named Alice or some shit with an A huh?"
Across from him, the junior sighed in defeat, “…Allison.”
Snickers rang through the group, but Remy found himself pushing his sunglasses up onto head so he could look Kevin in the eye as he grinned good-naturedly, “Any siblings?”
Luckily, the newest student seemed to get the message that it was all in good fun, grinning back, “I have a sister.”
“I swear if her name is anything related to Britney or Jessica I will scream.”
Kevin smirked, “Tiffany.”
Remy clapped his hands together in emphasis, “BASIC. BITCH.”
“Oh come on, Sleep,” the girl next to him pushed him playfully, “not everyone can be as extra as you.”
He gasped dramatically, “I am not extra,” He pulled his sunglasses back on with a grin, “I’m elite.”
The teens around him laughed, even Kevin, and he decided the kid wasn’t so bad.
~
Remy had been 15 when she got her pronoun necklace. At that point she had identified as genderfluid for almost two years. She had tried to wear pronoun pins before, but always seemed to forget them in the morning or misplace them in her disaster of a room. The necklace lives on the side table beside to her bed, right next to her sunglasses. On the first day wearing it to school, she pointed it out to the students surrounding her at the lunch table.
“I know y'all can read, so I made this real simple for ya,” Remy had always been open about her gender, and figured this would help curb the misgendering, “It’s color coded and everything.” The other kids laughed and nodded, carrying on with their conversations, but Remy felt a little better, and her smile was a little more genuine that day.
Just that day, though.
It didn’t surprise her, exactly, the way no one bothered to even glace down to check her pronouns. The way she was waved off dismissively when she tried to correct them. But it still stung.
“How was I supposed to know?” Ariel, Remy’s partner for an English assignment snapped out after the third time Remy corrected her on her pronouns.
“I don’t know, maybe the ‘she’ hanging around my neck, or one of the multiple times I’ve told you. Take your pick, cause if you can’t read or listen, this project is gonna be hell and I will not hesitate to drag you down with me.”
Ariel rolled her eyes, “You say you’re a girl or whatever, but you look the same as you always do!”
“Yeah, genderfluid people don’t acquire their shapeshifting abilities until they turn eighteen. Is that not common knowledge in the cis community?” Remy mocked.
“I mean you’re dressed the same, bitch,” the other girl crossed her arms, glaring, “Like, you’re not wearing a skirt or anything girly!”
“Neither are you, bitch,” despite her best effort, Remy raised her voice, gesturing at Ariel’s jeans and shirt, “I didn’t realize you were born in the 1930’s, but honestly if we’re judging based off clothes I’m gonna assume your pronouns are ‘ignorant trash’!”
“Remy!” The teacher stormed over to the girls’ table, “That’s enough!”
“Damn straight it is,” Remy crossed her arms, “I want a new partner. Ideally someone who doesn’t have a negative IQ.”
Ariel screeches and soon both girls are yelling, words and curses blending together as the teacher shoves her way between them and fights to regain order.
Remy gets a new partner.
~
Remy goes to a college party wearing the shortest skirt she owns and too much makeup. Someone offers her some sort of pill and it’s not a school night so she takes it. She doesn’t remember much, but she remembers she didn’t feel sad, and in the morning she decides to start growing out her hair.
~
For awhile, Kevin is just another face in the crowd Remy surrounds themselves with. But the more Remy felt distant from the rest of their peers, the closer Kevin seemed to feel. He had been so nonchalant when Remy came out to him, not hassling them about it or badgering them with questions. Whenever he sat down at lunch, Remy would catch him glancing at the pronoun necklace and following it’s guidance like so few in their group did. For every hurtful word or ignorant comment, Kevin would be there, complementing Remy’s comebacks or rolling his eyes, smiling at Remy and stating “some people are so dumb”. He sits next to Remy on the front steps of the school and puts his arm around their shoulders and Remy lets him.
It should feel natural, the two of them getting together.
“Come on,” Kevin whispers, hand on Remy’s cheek to pull them closer, the two of them behind the bleachers after school like a bad cliche, “I like you. Do… do you like me?”
Remy doesn’t know how to answer that. But they know how they should.
“Yeah. Yeah, I do.”
People always say you’re supposed to date your best friend, right?
~
Dating Kevin is… weird. Not too much changes, they suppose, but the things that do change make Remy’s stomach clench in a way they don’t really understand. They think kissing is supposed to feel nicer than it does. They think having a hand around their waist should feel safe instead of nerve wracking. They think they should be grateful to be given flowers instead of off put.
But all the good is still there. Their friend is still there. So it’s fine. It’s worth it.
~
They’re in Kevin’s room, laying on his bed, homework forgotten on the floor as they kiss lazily. Remy had kind of been hoping to actually just work on homework instead of being tugged onto the bed again, but he doesn’t think much of it anymore, happy enough to be spending time with the older boy. Or at least, he was, until Kevin slides his hand up Remy’s thigh and starts tugging at the waistband of his jeans.
Grabbing Kevin’s wrist, Remy immediately pulls away, “That’s a no-fly zone, hon.” He tries to keep his voice light, despite the confusion he feels because Kevin knows this, knows Remy.
But Kevin moves to kiss his neck, twisting his wrist out of Remy’s hand and placing it on Remy’s hip, “Babe, it’s been almost six months. Don’t you think we’ve waited long enough?”
Remy pushes him away a little more forcefully, “Uh, I don’t know if you’re suffering some sort of amnesia right now but I’m ace. This isn’t something we wait for it’s something we don’t do.”
“Come on, I’m your boyfriend.”
Something about the way he says it, like it should be the end of the conversation, makes Remy acutely aware of his position lying beneath him; the way Kevin looms over him and won’t back off.
He can feel his heart pounding in his chest when he abruptly sits up and pulls away, finally getting some distance between the two of them, “Yeah, and I’m still ace. You’ve know this practically since we met!”
Kevin starts getting a little heated, throwing his arms out in frustration, “Yeah, but we’re dating. I didn’t think it applied to me.”
“Excuse me?” Now Remy is standing, fuming, fists clenched even as he backs away from the bed, “You didn’t think my orientation ‘applied’ to you?”
“Well I thought you loved me.”
And that makes Remy’s breath catch in his throat. His vision tunnels till all he can see is his best friend. And he wants to say ‘I do’, he wants to say ‘not like this’, he wants to say ‘don’t make me prove it’.
He wants to say, ‘I thought you loved me, too.’
But he can’t get any words out, and so Kevin keeps talking, patronizing, “Look, I get if you don’t want to bang random people or whatever, but I’m your boyfriend. You’re not being fair to me.”
Remy swallows thickly, and finally managed to grind out, “I didn’t take you for the ‘dumb jock’ type, but I find it hard to believe you’ve got multiple brain cells when you sprout ignorant shit like that.”
“Oh, well sorry if I don’t know all the intricacies of you being a prude.” It hits like a punch to the gut, and Kevin rolls his eyes, his face smug like he’s just won, like he’s waiting for Remy to fold and like Hell is that happening. Remy feels like he’s on autopilot, spine straightening, chin up, eyes cold, looking down his nose at Kevin like he was the dirt on his shoe instead of the crumbling remains of the best friend he had ever had.
“Oh, I’m sorry, I should have realized “no” was too complex of a concept for you. After all, you’ve barely known me a year and most dogs take at least a week to learn that word.”
Across from him, Kevin’s face fell, first into shock, then into fury. He opened his mouth but Remy didn’t let him get a word in.
“It’s okay, most toddlers have trouble with it, but I’ll try to explain the best I can. No, we’re not having sex. No, you don’t always get what you want. No, you can’t tell me what to do. No, we’re not dating anymore since I have become suddenly acutely aware of how out of your league I am. You need me to say it again slower? Or would you rather have a visual?” Remy flipped him off, stone faced even as Kevin’s turned red with rage.
Gathering his things, Remy ignores all the names hurled his way, all the accusations and curses and insults. He refuses to flinch when he hears something crash, though he walks to the door a little faster.
Kevin tries to get the last word in, shouting at his back, “Good! I didn’t sign up for half a boyfriend!”
Remy doesn’t stop walking. He doesn’t even turn around.
“You couldn’t handle half.”
The door slams behind him.
His footsteps seem to echo through the empty street. Evening has fallen, the sky darkening from pink to deep reds and orange. Remy manages to get a few blocks away from Kevin’s house when he can’t hold it back anymore, and he ducks into an alley between two apartment complexes. Leaning against the brick wall, it feels like everything in him collapses and he finds himself sliding down to curl on the dirty ground and sob into his knees.
The worst part is, Remy already knows that everyone will pour out false sympathies for the breakup, for the fact that he doesn’t have a boyfriend anymore. And Remy won’t correct them; won’t explain that he honestly doesn’t care about the end of the romantic relationship, but that he broke down in an alleyway because he lost his best friend. His only friend.
And logically he knows that he’s been here before. He remembers having no friends before Kevin, being alone in a crowd and he knows that he survived it before. But he doesn’t remember it hurting quite this bad.
This aftermath is so much worse than anything from before, and Remy decides that none of the good times in between were worth it. Not at all.
~
For about a week Kevin and Remy’s breakup is the talk of the school. The masses that huddle around Remy coo and send him pitying glances, telling him there are more fish in the sea while Remy smiles stiffly and nods along. Kevin has a lot to say and he says it loudly. But Remy stays so calm and cool, saying nothing except to cut down anyone who tried to make him explain his side, it was hard to take much of what Kevin said seriously. To an outsider Kevin seemed like a rambling peasant, trying to smudge the Ice Queen’s name. Remy ignored him. Soon everyone else did too.
His dad tries to talk to him. Remy had come home, face blank and empty as he explained that he had broken up with Kevin.
“What happened?” Picani asked, concerned, “Things seemed to be going so well.”
Remy had only shrugged, “It just wasn't working out.”
“I'm so sorry, Sleepyhead,” he pulled his child close in a one sided hug, “I know breakups are tough. I'm here if you want to talk, okay?” Remy had nodded against his chest, and then locked himself in his room.
Picani tried to bring it up a few times after that, even offering at one point to see if one of his old coworkers from the therapy practice he used to work at could fit Remy in for a session or two. But Remy always smiled and shook his head, “It's just teen angst, pop. I'll be fine, promise.”
Still. For about two weeks after that, Remy comes home after school and immediately collapses into bed. Being awake wasn’t very fun.
Finally, almost a month after Remy had their heart ripped out, they sit up in bed, where they’ve been for the three hours since they got home, and realize how pathetic they are.
Fuck this. Remy doesn’t want to sit at home and feel sad. They don’t want to be frustrated and confused and alone with their goddamn thoughts. They decide right then and there that that’s not who they’re going to be.
Filled with determination, they get to their feet, pulling their phone out and scrolling through old messages- there was always someone having a party in this city. Sure enough by the time they’re dressed and pulling on their jacket they have the address of some rich senior who doesn’t mind a bunch of teenagers destroying his parents’ house.
“Hey dad, I’m going over to a friend’s house tonight!” Remy calls out as they head for the front door.
Picani peeks his head out from his office, “Oh, I didn’t know you had plans.”
Remy turned and shrugged, “It was kind of a last minute thing. But I’ll be back in the morning.”
The counselor had a look of concern on his face, “Alright. Text me when you get there?”
“Sure, sure.”
“Okay,” Remy was already walking away, not noticing their father’s worried eyes following him, “Stay safe, Sleepyhead.”
~
Remy is just killing time before his next class, leaning against a wall and fiddling with his phone, when the jock approached him.
“Hey there, sweetheart,” the other student smirks.
Raising an eyebrow, Remy looked the boy up and down. He recognized the boy as a recent transfer, a stereotypical football player that Remy thought only existed on tv and cliche teen movies.
“‘Sweetheart’? That’s your opener? Do you get all your lines from B movies? Try silent films, you’ll have more luck.”
A flash of annoyance crossed the other’s face, vanishing as he straightened to stand a little taller, “You know, when they said you had a mouth on you, I was hoping they meant in a… different way,” he leered blatantly.
Rolling his eyes, Remy turned back to his phone, “You clearly weren’t listening then. Any “they” talking about me knows I’m not into that,” he responded cooly.
The other boy only raises an eyebrow, “What, don’t tell me you’re actually straight?”
Remy scoffed, “Did I say I’m straight? I’m ace.”
“Oh,” he rolls his eyes, “So you’re straight.”
“Are your ears just for decoration?” Remy crossed his arms, “I’m ace. I’m not interested in sex with anyone, gender’s got nothing to do with it.”
“Maybe you just need the right person to change your mind,” the boy purrs, putting a hand on Remy’s hip and leaning over him, looming.
Remy gasped dramatically, putting a hand over his chest in sarcastic shock, “Oh my God! I didn’t know it was possible!” He leaned forward, looking straight into the other’s eyes, “You’ve managed to make me even less interested!” The jock sputtered indignantly, but Remy just smirked and slid around him, not bothering to lower his voice as he walked away, “If I wasn’t ace before, picturing you in bed turned me off for good.”
The hallway fills with whispers and giggles, and Remy knows he won, but he still needs to hide in the restroom for ten minutes because his heart is still pounding from the feeling of being cornered.
He’s not short, but he starts wearing boots with a bit of a heel on them anyway. He feels safer being able to look down on most of his classmates.
~
Maybe being awake wasn’t the problem, it was being sober, Remy decided.
Her laugh came easier after a few cheap beers. A couple shots and she could dance without a care. If she gets drunk enough she can forget that her happiness is an act.
It’s a solid system.
~
Remy is sitting on the steps outside of school, the usual suspects sitting around him as they all passed the time before classes started. Tired and frustrated from a long week, Remy had started ranting about the number of fuckbois at the school, when one of the guys next to them rolled his eyes.
“I mean, you do lead them on.*
Pushing their glasses up onto their forehead, Remy raised an eyebrow, “Literally everyone knows I’m ace. I don’t exactly hide it. How is that leading them on?”
“Well you don’t act asexual.”
“You don’t act like a single-celled organism and yet here we are.”
“I’m just saying,” the boy held his hands up in defense, “that you‘re always flirting with people.”
“Uh, yeah. Flirting is fun. But last I checked talking shit wasn’t the same as agreeing to do the nasty in a broom closet between classes.”
“Wait, did that happen?” A girl on the other side of him chimed in.
Remy shrugged, “No, it didn’t, which made a certain asshole very upset because apparently I broke some sort of unspoken contract by putting a stop to all that nonsense.”
The first boy leaned back, waving his hands in surrender, “Whatever man. I just don’t know what you expect when you…. You know,” he gestured vaguely at them.
Huffing, Remmy leaned forward on their knees, “Yeah, well, my expectations get lower everyday.”
~
Remy loves getting drunk and dancing in the very center of a crowd of people. He loves the warm buzz, and the feeling of human contact without any sort of obligation. He wears tanks and crop tops just to get some feeling on his skin.
~
“So, Sleep, interested in anyone these days?”
The girl leaning next to Remy’s locker bats her eyelashes, an unspoken but clear, interested in me? She’s vaguely familiar, just like everyone else. They don’t know each other.
Glancing over, Remy snorted, “I’m more interested in the state of my cuticles than anyone in this school, hon.” For a moment, the girl looks almost hurt, and Remy finds herself softening, “I’m not into dating. I realized I’m aromantic.”
There’s a beat of silence as the other girl absorbs the information. Suddenly, her eyes widen, “Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry, that’s so sad!”
That made Remy raise an eyebrow, “Excuse me?”
“Well, I mean,” she has her hands over her heart, looking at Remy with pity like she was a Hallmark movie widow, “you’re gonna be alone forever.”
“Riiiiiight,” Remy drawls, hiding her hurt beneath patronization, “I forgot about how you’re only allowed to interact with a significant other. Ever since that ban on friends and family. Rough times for all single girls.” She wiped away a fake tear.
“You know what I mean,” the other girl frowned, “Are you sure you want that? I mean you’ve dated before, isn’t it better to not be alone?”
And Remy decided right then and there, “No.” She slammed her locker shut, keeping her gaze haughty as she sauntered away, “None of you fuckers are good enough for me anyway.”
~
Remy is in someone’s basement, belly full of whiskey, laughing with a group of people whose names she doesn’t know and pretending she didn’t come here alone.
~
During lunch, Remy noticed a boy, Travis he thinks his name is, staring at Remy’s backpack.
“Dude, if you want the homework answers all you had to do was ask, not stare a hole into my bag.
Travis jumped, startled, but then he smirked, “I was just looking at your pins,” He gestured to the large buttons on the front of Remy’s bag. They were all different flags- a rainbow, the nonbinary flag, genderfluid flag, ace and aro flags, and a large pink button that just had the word “QUEER” in curly black font. Travis shook his head, still smiling, “You have too many things.”
Remy raised an eyebrow, “Pardon?”
“I just mean, most people are just gay, or trans, or whatever. You don’t have to be every letter in the alphabet you know.”
He said it so nonchalantly, Remy felt his teeth clench, “Sorry we can’t all be minimalist straight boys.”
Snickers sound through the group, and Travis snorts and rolls his eyes jokingly, and the conversation is forgotten.
~
That night Remy can’t find a party, so he sneaks into a club. He stands in front of booming speakers and loses count of how many shots he has, and doesn’t think about how he somehow manages to be too much and not enough at the same time.
~
Remy is eighteen when he stumbled through the front door, trying to close the door quietly behind him. But the effort was for naught, as the lights turned on, and when he twisted around, his father was standing in the entryway, eyes alight with worry and anger.
“Where have you been? It’s after two in the morning on a school night, I left you five messages and I don’t even know how many texts!”
“I’m sorry, I just lost track of time,” the teenager rubbed his forehead, slipping his sunglasses off to hold at his side. “Can we talk about this tomorrow?” He tried to walk past his dad, one hand on the wall to try to keep his balance, but Picani grabbed his wrist.
“No! We are talking about this right now! You can't just-” he paused when he noted how the teen was swaying, “Remy are you drunk?” His voice was incredulous.
Remy blinked, shaking his head to try to clear his clouded thoughts, “I-“ he pulled his arm roughly out of his father’s grip, “I had a few drinks, that’s all! It’s not like I drove or anything-“
“It’s still irresponsible, and unsafe!” Picani raised his voice, brows furrowed with anger and worry, “You didn’t even tell me where you were going tonight! What if something had happened? I wouldn’t even know where to start looking!”
“Don’t be so dramatic!” Remy rolled his eyes, “It’s high schoolers drinking, it’s not that big of a deal!”
“It’s a big deal because I know you’re lying to me!” The counselor’s voice continued to increase in volume. He knew he needed to calm down, to keep his composure and discuss what was happening rationally, to explain his side with a level head. But it was hard.
Because this was Remy. This was his child standing in front of him, swaying on his feet, hands trembling at his sides, with dark circles under his glaring eyes and hair a wild mess. It was jarring to see how very not okay his child seemed. And Picani felt his rationality slipping through his fingers.
“You’ve been staying out later and later, you never talk to me, your grades have been slipping, and now this-?”
“I get it dad, I’m a problem child!” He tried to look angry, but he couldn’t hide the tremor in his voice, or the glassy look in his eyes as he ran shaking fingers through his hair.
Picani felt something like desperation rise in him as he took a step forward, “That’s not what I’m saying. But Remy, this isn’t you-“
“I am so sick of everyone telling me who I am!” There was a quiet crash as Remy hurled his sunglasses at the wall, the lenses splintering into several shards. Chest heaving, the teen looked up at his father with venom in his eyes, “It’s like mom all over again.”
The words are quiet, and sharp, and suddenly Picani feels like he can’t breathe.
For a moment they both stand, looking at each other and wondering how exactly they got here. Then Remy turns, and without a word, he walks into his room and slams the door behind him.
~~~~
The next morning, Remy comes downstairs and sits across from his dad at the kitchen table before school and lets out a soft, “I’m sorry.”
Picani stares down into his coffee, “Me too.”
Remy keeps his eyes on the table, “I’ll do better. I promise.”
There is still something wrong. All his years of training as a therapist and a counselor scream at him to do something- to skip work and school and stay here and find out why his child looks so tired and hurt and what happened and they can’t just leave things like this-
But when he opens his mouth, the words die in his throat.
Remy doesn’t need another controlling parent.
“Okay,” he nods. And then he stands, because if they don’t leave soon they’re going to be late. “Okay.”
~
Picani gives him more space, and Remy gets better at hiding his habits, and they don’t talk about it again.
~
Graduation comes and goes in a blur. Remy hugs people he has no intention of seeing ever again. His dad cries, holding him close and taking an absurd amount of pictures. A part of Remy feels a spark of warmth at how his father glows with pride, how he had jumped up and down during the ceremony, shouting when Remy’s name was called, “That’s my kid! That’s my kid!” like he wanted the whole world to know. The counselor had been so understanding when Remy had chosen not to go to college, instead applying to be an apprentice at a tattoo shop downtown. When he got accepted, Picani had grinned widely and demanded they celebrate.
“Oh, I can’t wait to get something done by you!” He had clapped his hands excitedly.
Remy smirked, “I mean, you *did* kind of give me the idea.”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Picani winked sarcastically, crossing his uncovered and heavily tatted arms in emphasis.
A huff of laughter escaped Remy as he turned back to the computer in front of him, continuing to fill out the apartment application open in front of him. As he typed, his father moved to stand behind him, looking over his shoulder at the form for the small studio apartment.
“Remy… are you sure you don’t want to just live at home a little longer? You know I don’t mind.”
“I know,” Remy looked up to smile gently at him, the man’s face apprehensive and cautious, “and I know it doesn’t look like much, but I don’t mind having a smaller space while I work through my apprenticeship. I’m just…” she took a moment to consider her words. Trying to work around the truth without lying, “I want to start the next phase, you know? Start being an adult.”
Picani still looked concerned, so Remy smiled, leaning against his shoulder, “I won’t be far. You’ll still see me all the time, and I’ll still come by to raid the fridge and do laundry and watch Steven Universe.”
The counselor grinned, putting his arm around his child in a half hug, “Well, I guess when you put it that way…” He swiftly pulled Remy into a full embrace, crying out dramatically, “I guess I just wasn’t ready for my little Sleepyhead to grow up so fast!”
“Daaaaaad!” Remy laughed, halfheartedly struggling to escape.
~
It doesn’t take long to move Remy into his apartment. The space is small, so he only brought a few pieces of furniture. A mattress on the floor, a thrift store loveseat, an old crate to serve as a temporary side table, and a couple lamps. A few boxes and a suitcase held the rest of Remy’s life that he wanted to take with him.
Picani still seems apprehensive, but Remy does his best to soothe him, “I literally just moved in. It’ll look better once I get settled.”
“I know, you’re right,” his dad smiled, “I just can’t believe you’re all grown up now.”
“Taller than you and everything,” Remy joked.
“Only by a couple inches!” Picani cried indignantly, his lips twitching towards a smile.
Shaking his head fondly, Remy opened his arms, “Come on, it’s getting late and you have work tomorrow.”
Pulling his child into a hug, Picani gripped him tight, “I’m always a phone call away.”
“I know dad.”
Their goodbyes stretch a moment longer before the counselor finally takes his leave. The door clicks shut, and Remy moves to sit on the mattress, staring ahead blankly and waiting for twenty minutes to pass, as though his father might come back and catch him if he doesn’t wait. But he’s suddenly struck by the knowledge that he’s on his own now.
Nothing is against the rules anymore.
He doesn’t have to sneak around. He can leave his music blasting while he dumps out his suitcase and finds his fake ID and his favorite club outfit. There is freedom in being alone. No one to tell him who to be, or tell him to change, or be disappointed whether he does or not.
He’s free.
It’s dark outside by the time Remy finishes his makeup and grabs his keys. He grins as he walks down the street, heading towards a night of strangers and mindless noise and bodies pressed against each other without obligation and alcohol to drown out whatever the music couldn’t.
Yeah. Being alone is better.
Remy repeats that to himself a few more times as he makes his way into the night.
COURTNEY EATON,  GENDERFLUID,  THEY/THEM.  —  looks  like  LUKE ANDERSEN is  attending   AURORIA UNIVERSITY  in  auradon.  they're  the  TWENTY year  old  child  of  ARIEL & ERIC ( * adoptive ! ) ,  which  means  they're  from  ATLANTICA.  heard  they're  HONEST  &  CRAFTY,  but  can  also  be  EASILY DISTRACTED &  SELF-SERVING  ;  we all have our bad days.  people  normally  associate  them  with  LOOSE WHITE SHIRTS BLOWING IN THE BREEZE, WHISPY BRAIDS OF DARK HAIR, STANDING ON A BEACH IN THE MIDDLE OF A STORM, CRASHING WAVES ALONG THE DECK OF A SHIP.  —  hylia,  9teen,  est,  she & they.
                                 when i’m sad , oh god i’m sad ,                                  but when i’m happy, i am happy                                  and there’s just no place in-between                                  for us to meet.                                  playlist. pinterest. to listen as you read.
howdy folks !! so my name is HYLIA , and I’m here to play the sailor datemate of my dreams , LUKE ANDERSEN. I’m still sort of getting the hang of them since they’re a very new character , so I’m sorry if this intro is all over the place !! No TWS for now save for mentions of death , the ocean , and drowning. Hopefully this isn’t too messy !
HISTORY
So Luke is adopted - the child of one of King triton’s servants who passed away from illness. Originally , Triton was going to take them in himself , but instead , Ariel volunteered to care for the little merbaby and raised them as her own. As a result , Triton gave Luke the ability to grow legs on dry land as well as a tail when touched by large amounts of saltwater.
But , they weren’t told of their true heritage as a child. So they believed they were a human for the longest time.
They grew up loving both of their parents to the max but it was DEFINITELY evident they took after Eric more so. They wanted to travel , wanted to explore - and their dad , with his ship and naval prowess , was their hero. So from a very young age , they would accompany their dad on his travels.
It went to the point in which they were taught to pilot a ship themselves - and they even asked for one for their sixteenth birthday. Nothing else , just a vessel of their own. And they got one , naming it The Queen Jocasta.
First voyage on The Queen Jocasta resulted in an attack by pirates - sixteen year-old Luke tossed off the side of the ship , thinking they were about to drown. But , that power they were unaware of for all this time shifted their legs into a tail , and at that point they realized , Wow , Mom and Dad really haven’t told me SHIT.
So that was when they were explained that yeah , they were originally born a mermaid , and yeah , they were royalty both on the surface and under the sea. And that prompted Luke to spend a year in the ocean to get to know their mother’s family - returning to the surface to finish their time in Auradon Prep afterwards. This meant they graduated a year later at nineteen.
And then when that was over , Luke decided ‘ hey, I’m gonna take a trip all around Auradon by BOAT ’ since... that’s their brand , and spent another year just sailing around the different parts of Auradon ( and on the outside of it ) for the fun of it. They’re only just now getting back to Auradon to attend Auroria.
PERSONALITY & FACTS
So one may describe Luke as an ‘old soul’ - they’re very laid back and relaxed , for the most part , keen on their interests and someone who really seems to know a lot beyond how old they are.
Extremely intelligent - there’s a rumor going around that Luke has an eidetic memory , but they won’t confirm or deny it. ( It’s true. )
OBVIOUSLY AGAIN, OCEAN CHILD. Luke loves the ocean and always hangs out on beaches or the docks if they’re not on their actual boat. Because Luke doesn’t have a dorm - no , Luke sleeps on The Queen Jocasta in their cabin. Captain’s quarters and all that.
They love traveling just for the sake of traveling , and they can read a map like it’s nobody’s business.
Big into the classics like art and music DESPITE the fact they can’t paint , draw - but they can carry a tune well and for that reason , they play guitar nicely.
Honestly they’re smart and into the classics and shit but also this can come off as slightly pretentious since they don’t hesitate to remind people how good of a thinker they are - they don’t say it , but they show it.
Also they know how to dance , taking ballet classes when they were younger !! It’s just not something they remind anyone of much.
One more class they took was swordfighting in attempts to learn how to defend themselves . . . and yes , they’re great at it. Scary great.
In terms of a more direct description of their PERSONALITY , Luke tends to approach situations with again , a very laid back attitude but also one that’s brutally honest. They will let you know if they’re pissed off with you and . . . do have a bit of a temper when their nerves are ticked. Luke’s also got a bit of a dangerous tendency to always think they’re on their own and look after number one ( themselves ) and forgets that they can lean on other people for help. This doesn’t mean they don’t care about their allies - no , they greatly care about them. But Luke’s sort of used to being a mysterious , aloof , brooding traveler that they often forget they now have people they can confide in.
They’ll do things that perk their interest - Luke really isn’t going to go out of their way for something unless there’s either something in it for them or they have a personal interest. Also , if they care for the person , but yeah.
There’s a slight cynical streak to them for no other reason than the fact they just always think they have to watch their back - and for the fact people have secrets , like their parents keeping the secret they were a mermaid for a good portion of their life.
I promise they’re not a conceited selfish prick Luke is just VERY . . . aloof. I know I said that before but they’re distant and sort of keep to themselves and what they want.
Their opinion on the villains and heroes coming together is that they really . . . couldn’t care less. They never were really one to focus too much on the Auradon vs. Isle debacle anyway , but also - they can understand why some VKs are pissed. BUT , since this is Luke we’re talking about - that doesn’t mean they’re going to be exceptionally nice to the villain kids , treating them the same as Auradonian kids - casually , trying to get a read on them , probably the same aloof & ‘I could care less’ demeanor they normally keep up.
Also I should mention !! Luke is genderfluid , preferring they/them pronouns like stated before - but when addressing them with their royal title , they prefer to be addressed by the title of Prince. But Captain is even more so preferred.
Captain Luke Andersen just sounds like BDE I’m ,
Listen I love them so much they’re the myserious captain datemate of my dREAAMS
WANTED PLOTS & CONNECTIONS
OKAY SO. When the main puts up their WC page I will be submitting this one but I’d love an ARRANGED MARRIAGE plot for Luke. Basically , arranged while Luke was away traveling - they could either already know this person or are just meeting them now , but they’re not too keen on the idea of arranged marriage but aren’t really doing anything to fight it since it is what it is. They can either get along or hate each other , be best buddies or the like , but I think it’d be so funny if Luke - a wayward soul - was supposed to be arranged to marry someone who always has to make sure they’re not getting into trouble or something since Luke . . . CANNOT stay in the same place. At all. Bonus if this person is super duper sweet and polite in contrast to Luke’s nature of being absolutely crass & unrefined.
Their fiance: I’m so sorry for them Luke: I’m not, peace sign + middle finger motherfucker
And if this evolves in2 an actual ship that’d b up to chemistry n shit but the main idea I had was just. An arranged marriage. Rly we can do whatever n I’d b cool w/ it.
I’d love a crew for them pls. Again - this can be with both Auradon and Isle kids , since Luke gives no shits , but I’d imagine there’s a few Auradon kids who’ve been with Luke for quite some time.
PIRATE RIVALS PLSSSSS bc I know some Isle kids are pirates and that’s B^) juicy shit 2 me.
In general I’d just rly like some friends who try to get past Luke’s aloof & distant & brooding(tm) nature and let them b... soft n stuff.
also friends in general?? great. gimme soft platonic shit bc mgod thats what gets me all the damn time
if there are some royal kids out there who wanna bfriend luke’s ass since childhood n will stick w/them... give it to me.
Flings that Luke’s had either traveling or also just in Auradon in general bc uh yeah they’re lowkey a huge flirt
not 2 be THAT guy but Luke is a dreamboat haha... hahaha...
please clap
first love !! maybe !! idk sb who definitely luke had a thing 4 but it got lost in luke being. well. luke.
“my only love is the sea” stfu
gimmE SOME ENEMIES
AURADON KID ENEMIES
ISLE KID ENEMIES
PPL WHO THINK LUKE IS A FUCKIN PRETENTIOUS DICK BC THEY ARE
PPL WHO ONLY WANNA SEE THEM CRASH N BURN
FRIENDSHIPS THAT TURNED HOSTILE BC AGAIN, LUKE IS... LUKE.
PPL WHO HAVEN’T LIKE LUKE SINCE CHILDHOOD N THEY’VE ALWAYS GOTTEN INTO FIGHTS AND STUFF
I’m so bad writing wcs so maybe one day I’ll sit down and write formal connections so yeah.
BUT YEAH THAT’S IT !! pls pls pls feel free to either like this or hmu for plotting - I highly suggest contacting me on Discord ( rocky lynch lovebot / hylia.#0329 ) bc I’m always on Discord but Tumblr works too !! I promise u guys I don’t bite. I love u all I’m so excited 4 this !!! :^)
 December 17th, 2019
Dear Tumblr diary,
I'm on my way back home from my trip. I had lots of fun.
First I went to Disneyland for a whole day. It was super busy and I was super hungry so I ate at the Jolly Holiday for Brunch. I ate the Tomato soup even though I don't like Tomato but Grandpa Walt liked it so I guess it's good enough for me. I also ate a Macaroon. It was delicious. Then I went and bought some of Sarah's ears. Sarah is the girl walking on the tight rope in the Haunted Mansion stretching room.
Sometime after that, I met Sally, We talked about how the spiders helped her do her hair in the mornings. I told her how happy I was to see her and I felt like crying but I didn't want to because everybody laughed at me for crying when I met Minnie.
Then I looked at all of the decorations. The place was super packed so I got on Jungle Cruise because the line wasn't too bad. I went to meet the Princesses I met Tiana, Snow White, and Jasmine.
I remembered to be extra nice to snow white because I called her Mary Margaret and I'm sure the spell Regina put on her made her confused so she probably didn't remember. Then I saw Jasmine and we talked about Sora for a bit and I met Tiana. I was super upset Ariel wasn't there but I talked to Tiana anyway about her dress and how we watched her movie on Thanksgiving.
Then I went to meet Sinterklaas. I was so sick of sitting in line but Pooh's corner was adorable. My favorites were the pooh and piglet snowman. I met Sinterklaas. I wanted to ask him for an Aerith figure for Christmas but he seemed busy. He signed my name on my Autograph and we took pictures.
After that, I went to a small world Holiday. I got the best spot. I was watching the parade and waiting in line. Anna and Elsa waved at me!!! It felt so great!!!
I got on its a small world and had a great time. I thought it was so beautiful and took tons of pictures!
After that, I went to meet Minnie but she was tired so I went to see Mickey instead. I met him asked about Sora and he did motion like he was waving a keyblade!!! In between all the hustle and bustle, I lost my wallet. I was kind of scared.
But since I lost my wallet I ended up looking at its a small world. Since I was there at precisely the right time I got to see the whole place lit up. It was beautiful!
I met up with my friend Megan and her friend Kevin. My first internet friends!!!! They were super cool. I was scared I wouldn't have a place to stay since I hadn't checked in but Megan offered her hotel room. I was scared of staying with a person I didn't know but it was better than being homeless. The line for Galaxy's edge was super long. But halfway through somebody had turned in my wallet!!!
Anyway, we went on Galaxy's edge and got to be pilots! I felt a lot better after that. We talked about the haunted mansion and how cool everything was. Megan talked to her cast member friends and we got to go for Haunted mansion Holiday without waiting in line! I had so much fun!!
Megan and Kevin showed me some cool backstage stuff like where they dock the boats for Jungle Cruise, backstage of the Haunted Mansion where they park the doom buggies. They also showed me the entrance to Walt’s apartment.
Also, Kevin was cool enough to let me use his employee discount on stuff. By the way, just in case there are any snitches here. Kevin and Megan aren't their real names. We rode Pirates of the Caribbean. Kevin wanted to go to Olga's but it was packed. So we ended up going to Jolly Holiday for Hot Cocoa. Kevin bought it for us  and then it was time to go home.
Kevin wanted to make sure we all got home safe so he walked me to my hotel and then he walked Megan to her Hotel.
I took a shower and went straight to bed.
The next morning I woke up and got dressed. I ate a free Hotel breakfast and rode to the bus station so I could make it to Hollywood. I caught the bus and it was delayed. But I didn't mind. I arrived at the station and stopped at a tropical fish store to talk to the owner about fishes. I pretended I had business there because the sign said no loitering.
I went to Starbucks and used my reward on a Peppermint cake pop and some tea. I talked to some lady about Homeless youth and the barista about Kingdom Hearts. After that, I went to my hotel.
I checked in and hung out for a little bit. I also went to the front desk and got free toiletries. I pretended my bag got lost so I could get free stuff.
I went to Denny's and ate some lunch before heading back to the hotel. I ordered a small sirloin with french fries and broccoli and some chicken soup. The waitress practically ignored me the entire time I was there and they threw away my food while I was in the bathroom but luckily I was mostly finished.
I told the manager to give her my change as a tip but I think he kept it for himself.
After that, I got ready for Frozen. I had forgotten my leggings so I knew it was going to be cold. I headed to the museum of death in my very first uber pool!
I was talking to the guy he had said he had totaled his car in an accident I told him I was glad he was okay and we talked about how my coworker had gotten into a similar accident.
We arrived at the museum of death and I got a student discount so instead of paying 17 dollars I paid 15. I was sad to see that they had retired the turtles because I had really wanted to see them.
I spent most of my time in the mansion room. It was so fascinating. I couldn't read any of the letters because they had such messy writing. I was very fascinated with the victorian burial rituals and all of the actual artifacts.
I also realized that we all look exactly the same underneath our clothing.
Another room I spent a bit of time in was Heaven’s Gate Cult room. I only knew about them because of Family Guy.
I got a cool button.
Anyway, after I left the museum of death I went to walk to the theatre to see Frozen. It was really really cold so I stopped at the Funko museum for a minute. I took tons of pictures and had a great time! I didn't buy any souvenirs because I didn't see anything I really liked.
Frozen was amazing. I had trouble finding my seat but eventually, I found it. I wish I could have sat closer to the middle but it is what it is.
The theater was freezing. I wonder if they did that on purpose.
Anyway, I met this nice older couple. The woman offered me her jacket because I was cold but I said I was okay. I was wearing a purple dress with my black jacket and my sparkly flats. I was sitting next to this other girl and her mum I think.
I like to remember Who I sat with. Like when I saw Anastasia I sat next to a couple kids my age who had seen the movie when they were younger. I sat next to the same-sex couple and they were adorable. I sat next to this girl who gave me chocolate and I was really happy because I had wanted to eat chocolate because Anastasia Romanov ate chocolate when she went to the theatre but the Ghiradelli store was closed lol.
Anyway back to Frozen.
They had a little bit of Frozen 2 in the broadway musical. one of my favorite lines was when Anna and Elsa’s mom said “I’m a child of the north mountains” and Kristoff’s mom said “And now you’re a queen? Good for you!!!”
I liked how Kristoff and Anna had a song together. I didn't like how I was told there was a “Do you wanna build a snowman reprise” but I didn't see one. My favorite was def Let it go. Her costume was so beautiful.  I liked how they made it rain confetti in the theatre. Disneyland made it snow which I thought was super cool. Sadly I didn't see any fireworks while I was at Disney.
After frozen  I went to eat at In and out and they didn't have sweet tea :( So I ate and talked to this lady about theatre and these kids about the concert they went to. I ate about two hamburgers because I knew I couldn't take home any leftovers.
I watched the new episode of Rick and Morty and I went to sleep. The bed was super nice and comfortable. I didn't feel very good so I didn't eat that much. I wanted Waffles but I had muffins instead. I ate it and went to the greyhound station. The bus was delayed and I wish I would have known it was more delayed than usual because I would have gotten more Starbucks.
The bus station never opened. We had to wait for the bus with no idea when it was going to show up. I was kind of upset because I also needed to use the bathroom. I eventually got to the station. The driver said my bus was getting ready to leave so I just ran into line. They had us waiting for like twenty minutes so I had some lady watch my stuff when I went to the bathroom.
I got on the bus and made it to Disneyland. I saw the Hooter’s everyone in my family used to talk about.
I made it to Disney locked my stuff in the locker at the hotel and ran to meet Jack and Sally. I waited in line for about twenty minutes before I saw them. I was so happy to meet them. We talked about Sora and about how the spiders might be able to help Sally have curly hair like mine if they were dancing.
Jack and Sally said that it would have been a wonderful image. We talked a little bit more and I said goodbye and they signed my book. I bought a lovely pin to commemorate our first meeting.
After that, I went and got a Macaroon at The Jolly Holiday. It was my first mobile order and I ate it because I was ever so hungry.
Then I met the princesses. Man, I was so sick of waiting in line. I met snow white again and I met  Cinderella and We talked about the ice on the castle and how we were worried about Princess Aurora being cold. But I said Elsa’s ice powers must have made it so she would have the ice but she wouldn't be cold.
I met Ariel, I wanted to do a short video of singing swim this way with her but she said she was saving her voice so I sang a little bit of it with her. As per usual I asked about Melody and Prince Eric and she said they were doing fine. I said my goodbyes to her and went to meet Princess Aurora.
I had to wait in another line but I didn't mind.  I met Aurora and asked if she was cold in her castle.
I met Tinkerbell and asked if she knew Sora. She said no but mentioned he looked familiar. I said she might have met his brother Roxas lol. We talked about Terrance and she told me about her jacket. She mentioned her sister Periwinkle and I really wanted to say “You don't have a sister.” But I didn't want to get her in trouble.
After I met Tinkerbell I left Disneyland and went to California adventure to see if I could meet Anna and Elsa. I went to the animation studios and met Anna and Elsa after waiting in another huge line.
I asked if they knew Sora and they said they hadn't. Which again kind of sucked because FROZEN WAS IN KINGDOM HEARTS 3. I told them I thought their outfits were beautiful I asked Elsa if she knew Jack Frost. Another no, but he sounded familiar.
After that, I went to the Beast’s library. I had never done that before and I was so happy I got to go!!! I took a little quiz and it told me I was most like Belle.  I went to look for Anna and Elsa pins but I didn't like any of the ones they had. I went on the Little Mermaid ride because I wanted to ride it once. After that I was getting super grumpy because I was hungry so I went and ate some ramen at the lucky fortune cookie.
The ramen was not as good as it could have been. But it was filling. I talked to a guy about where to get Hot Cocoa and he told me Ghiradelli square. I bought hot cocoa and a few chocolate squares. They wanted almost three dollars for four squares of chocolate! So I helped my self to at least four of their free samples.
I walked around with my hot cocoa and saw most of the Christmas lights. Man, I thought they were so beautiful. I ended up getting on radiator springs racers. since the line was short. Then I went on mater’s Jingle Jam. That was fun. After that, I walked back to Disneyland.
I wanted to Meet Minnie but she was busy so I bought a rice Krispy and when I came back she was there. I took a few photos with her and then one with Pluto. Then I rode Snow White and Alice in wonderland. After that, I rode Pirates of the Carribean. I wanted to see if I could get on Haunted Mansion Holiday again but I knew I had to leave. It kind of sucked because they announced that the fireworks had been canceled so all the normies were leaving.
The trip was kind of sad because I didn't get to go on many of my favorite rides :( Next time I’m getting fast passes.
I did leave a little late and I showed up as the bus was there. Luckily I caught it. But next time I’m leaving in the morning.
Well, we just stopped at Mcdonalds and I’m sharing fries with the lady who shared funyons with me.
I’ll talk to you guys later!
The Little Mermaid of Manhattan
Peter Parker x Reader.
Plot: Peter is saved by a mystery girl one day in the park, and he will stop at nothing to find her.
Tumblr media
Growing up in New York City, Y/N had seen more than enough strange things in her lifetime. Aliens, giant centipedes, killer robots, superheroes etc. But besides all that it was New York City, a place that wasn't a stranger to weird things happening all around. But luckily enough Y/N had never experienced these strange things first hand, although she had dealt with a knock off Elmo at least twice, but no aliens or superheroes.
That was until one day at 7 am on a Saturday morning during her run in Central Park.
She was running her usual trail, one not many people took, which to her was good, meant she was away from prying eyes that could possibly judge her on the terrible running she did, which in reality wasn't that bad at all. She was running past the small lake she usually passes when a blur of red caught her eye.
She was going to ignore it and continue running but a splash and the sound of terrified ducks made her stop. She pressed pause to her music and took out the one earphone she was using before turning her attention to the lake. There in the middle bobbing up and down was what appeared to be a person. Y/N couldn't really make out what it was until she stepped closer, and upon further inspection she recognized it to be Spider-Man.
Y/N panicked, she didn't know what to do. She couldn't leave him to drown, nor could she just run off and ask for help, no one appeared to be close by and it just so happened she was also a selective mute. So that only left her with one option. She started by removing her electronic devices, then her jacket, followed by her shoes and socks.
She then jumped into the really cold water and began swimming towards the figure. As she reached him she couldn't help but give a silent thank you to her father for having her enrolled in those swimming and lifeguard lessons during past summers. What she though would never help her in anything was quite helpful at the moment.
She reached out and grabbed onto him in a way that would permit her to swim to the shore quickly. The lake she had always considered small now seemed like an endless sea. Once they were both safely on shore she softly dropped him on the grass before dropping down beside him, she had been tired enough as is due to her run, but was now even more so due to the impromptu rescue mission.
Once she recovered her bearings Y/N turned her attention back to the superhero. He still had his mask on and she didn't know if that was a good thing or not. She knew she would probably be breaking the most important superhero rule there was at trying to remove his mask, but she considered at that moment that air was more important than keeping his identity a secret. She looked around and found no possible way of removing the mask, it seemed to be connected to the suit.
She started feeling around his neck area and upper chest to see if that would help in removing the mask, but her efforts seemed useless. It was as if the suit understood what she was trying to do because next thing she knew the mask was gone as it has retracted.
That's when Y/N took a good look at his face and almost screamed because she knew him. She knew Spider-Man. She knew that head of messy curls, that nose, those lips, that bone structure. How could she not when she had spent almost everyday of the last 2 years looking at it.
Out of everyone in the world the last person Y/N had ever expected to be Spider-Man was Peter Parker, but here she was, staring down right at him.
After calming down and assessing the situation she noticed that the suit had kept the water out, which meant he was never in any real danger of drowning, but that the force of the fall had made him pass out.
She quickly retrieved her stuff, putting on her shoes and jacket, thankful that the cool may air was already drying her wet clothes. She then went back to look at Peter, not yet wanting to leave him alone. She sat beside him, looking down at his figure. As creepy as the situation was Y/N was honestly quite concerned for his well being, who knew how long it would take him to wake up.
Some time had gone by, Y/N wasn't sure, she just knew it had been a while due to the position of the sun. She was playing with the grass, being so lost in thought she had started singing a song to herself, something she only did when absolutely alone. It was an old song her mother used to sing to her before she passed. It was a Fleetwood Mac song, Songbird.
Her mom also used to call her that because Y/N loved to sing, but after her death, Y/N stopped singing and after some time she stopped talking, she was already shy enough as is, but after what happened to her mom she became so scared of what people could do she developed social anxiety as well, becoming not only silent, but an outcast as well, someone so shrouded in mystery, people tended to keep their distance.
She came back to the normal world when she heard grunting and some shuffling. She looked down and noticed Peter had woken up and was looking at her. She had gone into such a panic that she was frozen in her spot. She knew she needed to get out of there but her body wasn't responding to what her brain was telling it to do.
"Who-who are you?" Peter asked suddenly, squinting up at her, trying to make out a face against the bright sunlight.
That's when Y/N bolted. She couldn't afford to have Peter know who she was, nor that she had saved him. She went and took cover behind a tree, close enough to see and hear him but not for him to see her.
After a couple of minutes Peter sat up and looked around in confusion, looking at the lake, then down at himself and then in the direction he thought the mysterious girl had gone in. It was then that loud sounds invaded the calm area and next thing either of them knew an Iron man suit was landing beside Peter. Peter quickly stood up as he saw Tony exit the suit.
"What happened kid? I was calmly working in my lab when I got a notification from Karen that you were in trouble."
"I-I don't know Mr.Stark," Peter stuttered, "I was just swinging around and then I hit something and I fell and next thing I know I'm waking up right here with a girl looking down at me."
Tony gave Peter a questioning look, "A girl?"
Peter nodded, "Y-yea she was...she was sitting right beside me, singing this song, I don't know the name, I just know I've heard it, but she saw me wake up and then ran." He explained. "I think she dragged me out of the water, even though I couldn't make out her face because of the sun I could tell her hair was wet."
"I don't know how likely that is Kid, no one comes down this part of the park. I'm pretty sure there's no one even near here."
"I swear Mr.Stark there was a girl! And she saved me."
Tony patted Peter on the shoulder, "last time I checked Mermaids weren't real Kid."
"What?" Peter looked up at Tony confused.
"Saving you from drowning, singing a song, mysteriously disappearing. You sure her name wasn't Ariel?"
"What?" Peter repeated.
Tony rolled his eyes, "You should know this Pete, you're the pop culture expert and last I heard you were on a Disney movie splurge."
It took Peter a moment before he got what Tony was talking about. "Are you talking about the Little Mermaid."
"You probably watched the movie not long ago and the fall probably made you take quite a good hit to the head, so it's very possible you imagined the whole thing, it tends to happen."
"No Mr.Stark, she was real, I swear."
"Yea and I got a date with Ursula the sea witch." Tony fired back, "Now come on I want to take you back to the Tower and see how much brain damage you caused yourself."
Peter only huffed in annoyance before letting his mask cover his face again, and in the blink of an eye both him and Tony were gone. Y/N sighed in relief and came out of her hiding spot.
She was glad she hadn't been caught as she had no idea what she would've done had that happened, and she just hoped Peter would eventually believe Tony in thinking this was all a hallucination he had due to hitting his head upon impact with the water. Things would be different from now on, Peter Parker would no longer be the nerdy boy no one pays attention to.
She has seen him for who he truly is now and she would not forget it.
hey isn’t that ARIEL OLLIVANDER over there? yeah that is HER, standing there with those other GRYFFINDORS. i’m pretty sure they’re in SEVENTH year and i think i heard sybill saying they look like ARIELA BARER… whoever that is! when she looks into her crystal ball she see’s that they’re the SPITFIRE. anyway i’ve heard they’re pretty DAUNTLESS and QUICK-WITTED but kinda STUBBORN and PUGNACIOUS too, apparently they’re a HALF-BLOOD but i’m sure that’s not related. —— [ emm ]
Tumblr media
ariel is the daughter of gwendolyn ollivander (younger sister to garrick) and a random muggle man. the whole business was kinda scandalous gwendolyn doesn’t have a particularly great relationship with her parents
gwendolyn works in the department of magical transportation and it has required a fair amount of traveling so gwendolyn would leave ariel with garrick and other family while she was away and couldn’t take her daughter.
so basically ariel was raised by diagon alley, because he was busy with the shop and so ariel and her cousins were more often than not left to their won devices and spent most of their time playing and causing ruckus in the alley
gwendolyn has always had a love for all things muggle and made sure to expose her daughter to muggles and make sure she didn’t grow up with the prejudices of many other Sacred 28 families and it defs worked ariel is NOT hear for pureblood elitist bullshit
also she loves her mum a lot
suuuuuper gryffindor, like 1000% she’s got all that daring nerve also is very protective of younger students and her friends and anyone else who needs looking after
always will speak up for people who won’t can’t speak up for themselves ???
ari is small but she will fight you
also she is real obsessive when she gets on something there is no getting off until she sees it through
chagirl is bi/pan/whatever-i-like-who-i-like-gender-isn’t-important-so-unless-i-like-you-fuck-off-about-it-sexual
is really bad at relationships tho because she ends up distracted and doesn’t know what to do about anything or how to deal with having feelings
smart and pretty good at magic too mostly because of incessant practice
also she’s a total nerd about gobstones and collects chocolate frog cards
wants to become an investigation auror because she loves solving puzzles and catching bad guys
sorry this intro sucks so bad i’ll have a full bio/stats page posted up hopefully at some point
Wanted Connections
cousins - garrick’s actual kids or any other family related to the ollivanders i guess? i don’t know how they fit into the sacred 28 lineages exactly
childhood friends - other kids who spent time in diagon alley or were family friends or anything really i am open to suggestions
close friends - p self explanatory ?? needs a squad.
rivals - academically or from dueling club or anything. friendly or otherwise
enemies - pureblood elitist jerks probably end up on this list. or just jerks pureblood or not
Date Night??
They were sitting in a restaurant silent with the occasional glance. Tyler was trying to work up the strength to get Angelia to stop avoiding the topic he’d wanted discuss since Christmas. Angelia took a sip of her wine looking around. To her, this was a have fun going back to New York thanks for keeping my sorry ass company dinner and nothing else.
As their waiter came around and filled up Angelia’s glass Tyler deiced to speak. “Thanks for letting me stay over this holidays” Angelia nodded taking another drink. “Yeah, no problem it was nice hanging out like old times, nice to be friends again.” Friends she just friend-zoned you again..bet she didn't friend-zone that comatose. Tyler shook his head pushing the negatives thoughts about him out his head. He grabbed Angelia’s hand holding it. “Marshmellow how long are you going to pretend there’s nothing between us?” Angel sighed trying to get her hand back. “Tyler I told you I can’t do this for one my heart isn't fully in it because of...” She hesitated knowing she couldn't utter his name without breaking down.
Tyler rolled his hands letting go of her hand. “Ben?! because of him really Angel sweetheart let him go, there’s no ring on your finger, he’s not coming back and if he does wake up..” It was silent again just the restaurant buzzing in the background. Angelia’s eyes started to water as she realized what he just said. She stood grabbing her purse. Tyler put money down for the bill and walked after her “Angelia stop!” She ignored him breathing heavily down the street not caring if she bumped anyone. Tyler caught up to her, retaking her hand turning her around. “Marshmellow I'm so sorry i didn't mean to say that” Angelia snatched her hand back glaring at him. “Is that why they wouldn't tell me anything about him at the hospital because of you?!” Tyler looked down as Angelis groaned. “Un-fucking-believable!!” She started hitting Tyler’s chest letting out all her frustrations. He grabbed her arms and pulled them into an alleyway. “Stop Angelia and calm down I'm fucking sorry” She laughed, her face now red from all the bottled up emotions that she had been holding in ever since Ben told her goodbye for the last time. “You knew what was going with him and didn't fucking tell me, knowing I was going fucking crazy wondering if he was dead or not. I CAN’T SAY HIS FUCKING NAME!!”
Tyler let her cry on his chest not feeling bad for keeping anything from her besides Ben practically gave her up. Ben obviously didn't love Angelia anymore it was clear to Tyler once he found out Angelia didn't have the engagement ring anymore or that stupid necklace. “Angel I’m really sorry, but I didn't want to hurt you with the news, and I really think this is a sign to move on from him.” Angelia gazed up at him with a dangerous glint in her eyes. “Who are you to Christen Tyler?” That question stopped his heart.
During the holidays it was nice to hang out with the baby that took his features than the other two that looked like Bens, but that didn't change his views. Tyler stepped back and chuckled trying to ease the tension “Angelia” “No! Don't Angelia me! what..does..he..mean to you Tyler?” Angelia’s face grew even redder almost matching her lipstick if that were possible. Tyler shook his head trying not to lose her to this answer. “See that’s the difference between you and him. He stepped up when you shamed me for something we both played a part in, it ruined my fucking relationship with him, it ruined my reputation again, but that man stepped up and fucking claimed your son!”
By now Angelia’s voice could be heard as she got out all the frustrations she had been holding in trying to remain neutral for the sake of her friends. “He called Christen his son not you, His last name is Smith, not Scott, He told CHristen that he loves him so much not you ever!” Tyler stood and listened to her praise Ben like he was the good guy in all this. Ben wasn't the ideal dad to Tyler, the guy left his own fucking son to do drugs for months, and walked out on Angel right after she gave birth not bothering to even look at the twins when they were born yet Tyler's the shitty one because he wasn't ready for Fatherhood.”
“Fuck Ben Angel! Fuck him!” Angelia shoved him into the concrete wall screaming out her anger. “I don’t love you Tyler! Yes, I like you and would want to see what these crazy feelings I have are all about, but I can’t do it.” Silence while staring was becoming their thing. Angelia wiped her tears cursing her life and how every decision she made threw her deeper into a pit of depression. Angelia missed Ben, Angelia wished she had never had sex with Tyler out of sadness and revenge, but then she wouldn't have Christen and Ariel. Both babies were created out of a messy situation, but they were the most innocent thing she's ever laid eyes on next to logan. Tyler scratched the back of his head knowing his mission was a failure. "Angel I..words can't make up for how I hurt you ever since you were pregnant, but I'm just not ready to be a father, you weren't ready to be a mother when you had Logan" Angelia rolled her eyes at his lame excuse. "I still stepped up and took care of my kid. Christen doesn't deserve you popping up in his life when it's convenient for you. Bottom line Tyler you aren't his father so stop making the internet think you actually give a damn." Tyler opened his mouth to interject, but Angelia held up her hand "You love me not him and to be with me you have to accept all my kids."
Tyler's jaw twitched with the thought of being around Logan and Ariel. If it were up to him, he'd get rid of those two having Angelia and Christen all to himself. Tyler walked closer grabbing her chin "Please just give me a chance maybe that'll help me with my fatherhood problem" Angelia scoffed pushing him back "Tyler just go back to New York, fuck as many girls as you want and leave me alone."
Angelia took his hand and gave him back the ring he gifted her with on Christmas "I'm sorry Ty, but I'm not pulling the same move I did with Aaron just so I won't be alone, the truth is I have my kids and the love for their father to get me through in life who cares if I don't have dick anymore" She leaned up, giving him a kiss then left him standing in the alleyway.
