-
the sound of your metal club hitting the ball pierced through the quietness of the morning. the skies were still painted hues of orange as the sun was rising as you watched the direction of the ball.
using your foot to roll out another ball in front of you on the grass, you adjusted your stance as you set up. gripping the club as you gave yourself time before swinging back and hitting the white ball.
“nice one!”
turning around to see where the familiar voice was coming from, you smiled as you saw lily. you hadn’t seen her in quite sometime after she left to attend the australian grand prix to support her boyfriend and to play a tournament. “lily!”
you had known lily since childhood having met her at a small tournament. and eventually, what was just being penpals, meeting at tournaments and visiting one another with always the same talks about turning pro had turned into a life long friendship. and, truthful to your dreams, both of you turned pro at the same time and got onto the lpga tour.
“congrats on the t5 finish,” you smiled as you hugged the older girl. “i watched the highlights, you were amazing! how was australia as well?”
“australia was fun, alex bagged a p8 so he was quite happy about that,” she spoke as you two pulled away, going to her clubs which she had put at the bay next to you. “enough talk about me, how about you?”
shaking your head, you shrugged, “same stuff— golf, study, rest, the gym…finals are over now so i might go do something to reward myself.”
“i guess one of us needs to have a university degree,” she joked. you were on your final year of your mechanical engineering degree whilst she had dropped out from her course; though you couldn’t blame her for that as balancing university with being on tour was a difficult feat. “how about the rest?”
“the rest?” you asked, confused as you approached your golf bag, switching the club you were going to use. shortly, it dawned on you what ‘the rest’ meant. “still have no one, lily, you know that.”
“oh come on, (y/n)!” lily rolled her eyes, “please! i have some people that i can introduce you to!”
“lily…” you sighed, “i’m too busy with studying and practice half the time. romance just isn’t really something in the books right now and i haven’t exactly earned one.”
“how are you going to be smart enough to do engineering but dumb enough to believe that you have to earn love,” lily shook her head. “please, just let me introduce you to someone.”
“…and who is this person?”
“you’ll see, just follow me to monaco.”
“what?”
“lily, i hope you’re sure about this…” you mumbled as you two made your way around the paddock, the older girl clearly more familiar. “i feel a little out of place…and everyone else is—”
“quit that nonsense!” she let out a smile, “you look gorgeous! you’ve got the best paddock outfit in my opinion.”
“yeah, thanks for helping me choose an outfit,” you shyly smiled as you walked alongside lily as she showed you the ropes of navigating around a formula 1 paddock.
of course, you were familiar with the sport having been a formula 1 fan since you were young but being inside the paddock was a completely different experience for you. looking at the garages where the mechanics and engineers were hard at work, you adverted your attention to your best friend who had took your hand.
“alex!” she smiled, greeting her boyfriend before saying hi to the rest of the drivers. “oh, and i brought (y/n) with me!”
“oh my god, i’m starting to think you like her more than me! even your dog loves her more than me!” shaking his head, alex rolled his eyes, “how could you,” he playfully slapped his hand against his chest, pretending to be hurt by your invite to the weekend, “she’s literally responsible for ‘albolognese’!”
unable to hold back a laugh, you smiled, “you should take that as a compliment.”
“why?!”
“because the spaghetti was good!”
“the nickname is so bad!”
“no it isn’t!” you justified, “you had red hair and you cooked a really good spaghetti bolognese, calling you ‘albolognese’ is only acceptable.”
looking at his girlfriend hoping she would come into defence, alex let out a groan and a loud ‘come on’ upon seeing her struggle to hold back a laugh upon the interaction between her best friend and boyfriend.
“anyways,” you cleared your throat, still smiling over the dumb joke. “hi everyone, my name’s (y/n), i’m lily’s best friend. nice to meet you guys.”
“oh! you’re (y/n)!” one of the drivers which you recognised as mick could be heard. “lily always talks about you! hi, i’m mick.”
“i hope it’s all good things,” you smiled, glancing at lily who gave a playful smile and shrug. “nice to meet you.”
“mick! maybe you could show (y/n) around!” lily suggested, catching both of you off guard, taking alex's hand. "patrick is probably looking for alex, so we're going to be at the williams garage, see you!"
lily's intent crystal clear to everyone else except mick and you, everyone quickly making excuses to leave so that it was just the both of you as awkwardness settled in.
"uhm..." mick spoke, trying to figure out where to go next, "i could show you around the paddock?"
"yeah, that'd be nice. thank you, mick," you smiled as he took the lead, following behind him as he acted as your guide around the formula 1 paddock where risk met reward.
"you look really pretty- uh- your outfit is really nice," mick complimented, trying to break the awkwardness. but though the main intent of it was so there was less tension, the compliment was no less of genuine.
"thanks, lily helped me choose it," a giggle was let out, as you looked at mick who seemed to ease up as he ran his fingers through his hair.
"that's my car over there," the german spoke as he pointed towards the red car boasting the number '47' on it. "it's my first season with ferrari so i'm quite excited for the race and monaco is practically the crown jewel of formula 1...sorry i'm rambling."
"it's okay," you smiled, "it's the monaco grand prix! i mean, yeah, the track has no mercy and overtaking must be a nightmare but it's monaco. you win here, you're already one of the greats, plus ferrari has been competitive this season."
eyes widening, mick couldn't help but let out a grin, "formula 1 fan?"
"since young," you hummed as you walked next to him, "been a ferrari fan forever!"
as you continued your conversation as the german driver showed you around the paddock as both of you talked about anything from racing to your sports careers to your daily lives, you couldn't help but enjoy his company though having known him for a short time as you took in the sounds of the formula 2 and 3 cars and the smell of fuel and burnt rubber.
"hey, uhm, do you wanna go for dinner after the race on sunday?" mick asked, scratching the back of his neck nervously. "i mean it's fine if you say no-"
"i'd love to," you smiled as you soon exchanged phone numbers and social media handles with each other.
observing you two in secrecy, lily and alex watched as you became comfortable around each other.
a smile spread, "they like each other, definitely," lily sighed contently. "the eyes never lie."

dear oscar (OP81 x LS2)
dear oscar (OP81 x LS2)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ synopsis: Logan writes a letter to help him manage his feelings, it does everything BUT manage feelings. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ pairing: logan sargeant x oscar piastri w/c: 892 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ a/n: this is day FOUR (lando's number) of loscar posts until we get a loscar podium!! some angst today!! might make this a series very much inspired from https://archiveofourown.org/works/54754315 masterlist ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ taglist: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Logan crushes the sheet of paper and throws it into the pile of already crushed papers. He puts down the pen and cracks his fingers, again.
He’s been at this for hours and he hates it knowing he’s terrible at expressing himself and Oscar’s probably not going to even look at this.
Logan takes a deep breath once again and picks up his pen.
Dear Oscar,
I’m not very good at expressing my feelings but I’ll try my best.
I’ve missed you lately and I miss all our late night conversations, my nights feel empty without them. I miss our friendship and the very long conversations we had.
When you asked me how I was doing and I said “it’s been alright.” That was a blatant lie. I’ve been doing absolutely horrible. I haven’t seen a good day in months and every morning I ask myself why I’m doing this to myself, I ask if everything I left behind was worth it. Should I have given up?
 I’m glad you’re doing well and winning trophies, I’ve never been happier for you. Remember when your rookie year was being compared to Hamilton’s? That was amazing.
Great, now he’s gone off track again, absolutely perfect. Logan’s pen left the paper again and he contemplated crushing this one up. He eventually decided against it and his pen tip touched the paper again.
He doesn’t know what he’s going to write anymore but he doesn’t care. He just wants to let his feelings out.
I hate how we don’t talk anymore. I hate how life has to pull its strings on us. I hate how we walk past each other as if we never knew each other. I’ve been trying my hardest, I really have.
I want to talk to you. I want to hear your voice again.
I’ve been making wishes on every shooting star I’ve seen and been throwing in a penny for every wishing well I’ve come across, just wishing you were my friend again, wishing that I could go back in time and relive those moments in PREMA.
I didn’t treasure those times enough.
Every single time I see any McLaren video, I stop and stare, imagining that it could’ve been you and I. Believe me, I love how you and Lando have developed one of the closest bonds ever and trust me, I think Alex is a perfect teammate.
But I just wish that we had another chance and I wouldn’t fuck it up this time. I really wish I did.
Every single time Lando calls you “Osc”, it makes me shiver just knowing that I could never be half the person Lando was. I do everything and risk it all just trying to be more like Lando or just someone who you would bother to look at
His mind flashes back to every single time he and Oscar have done anything together, watch movies, do stupid promotional videos, even sad times came back and made him wish he took those moments better.
He tears up slightly, but wipes his tears away before they spill onto the paper. Lando’s voice saying “Osc” rings in his head like an annoying bell which kills him slightly every time it repeats.
Osc.
Osc.
Osc.
He slams his hand into the table, causing everything to jolt, even getting startled by his own actions. Logan isn’t even on Lando’s level, not even a quarter of the way there.
Lando’s better in every way, definitely much better teammate than Logan would’ve been.
His tears resurface but he doesn’t wipe them away this time, he lets them trickle down his cheek, cling on to his skin at his chin and finally drop down onto the paper, causing a stain.
More tears cause stains on the bottom part of the paper before Logan wipes them all away.
Please…
I miss you Oscar.
Regards Love
Logan
He places the pen down and looks at the letter, which has tear stains, but Logan couldn’t care less. He puts the letter down and folds it neatly in half, slotting it into a brown envelope. He seals the envelope tight, wrinkling the paper from pressing too hardly.
He takes his pen up again and the tip floats above the paper.
He takes a few seconds before writing.
To: Oscar Piastri
His throat stings from crying. He didn’t even cry for that long but it hurts him. His own words repeat in his head like a knife twisting into his body.
He opens up Oscar’s chat on his phone, his last message being left on Seen.
3 weeks ago Great race :)
He hasn’t even given Oscar a message for the Australian Grand Prix but Logan couldn’t care less.
His fingers hover over his keyboard.
Can we meet sometime soon?
He hesitates about sending it.
Osc.
Osc.
Osc.
Osc.
He turns off his phone and takes a deep breath.
He sits on his couch and leans back. The thoughts endlessly flying around in his head, like phantoms of his past haunting him again.
He closes his eyes and keeps them shut, imagining whatever makes him feel happy.
Oscar.
Oscar.
Oscar.
Osc.
The tears squeeze their way past his eyelids and slide down his cheek. It’s a devastating feeling.
He covers his head with a pillow and keeps his eyes tightly shut, crying himself to sleep.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ there will be a part 2 (hopefully) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

seven sentence sunday but once again, who's actually counting?
gonna be honest with y'all, i still have no idea what this fic really is, but i'm having a good time writing it!
“Where’s…Big Bend National Park?” Henry asks out of nowhere.
It’s enough for Alex to pull his attention from the stars. “Um, like six hours west of here. I didn’t even know you knew what that was. Why?”
Henry shrugs. “Sheer curiosity.”
“It’s never just curiosity with you. There’s usually some meaning behind it.” Alex sits up. “What’s important about Big Bend?”
“A lot of westerns were filmed there,” he tells him.
“Oh yeah? I never knew that.”
But then it takes less than a second for it to hit him: the tight-lipped smile, the soft hum of a short laugh, the way Henry angles his head briefly before looking down at his lap, fingers drumming against the neck of the wine bottle.
“Your dad filmed something there.”
“One of his first big roles,” Henry begins, “a few years before he and my mum met and he had his Bond run. It’s less famous than them, obviously, but I’d argue it was just as good.”
“What’s it called?”
“All For the Autumn Son.”
“I’ve never seen it,” Alex tells him softly. “What’s it about?”
“Oh, the usual; outlaws and bandits, heists, a corrupt and cornered sheriff. He makes a deal with a group to free their bookkeeper from prison, only to be killed before they overrun the town and take it hostage. Then this lone wolf type comes into play and drums up a plan to save everyone, there’s romance and a routine ride into the sunset.”
“Who did your dad play?”
“The hero.” At this, Henry smiles, chin titled up toward the sky. He looks so proud, and Alex has never been as sad as he is at this moment that he was never able to meet Arthur Fox. “It really is cheesy and Dad’s accent is…something else.” Henry laughs, and it’s a little more genuine this time. “I mean, it works, but it’s odd to hear when I’m so used to his voice, you know? But for all it’s worth, it’s brilliant.”
“Is it your favorite?”
Henry pauses for a moment. “Yeah.” Another pause. “It’s weird that any time I want to see or hear my father, all I have to do is turn on the telly. Literally the whole world knows him as this action hero, but he was so much more than that. They know one side of him — the actor side — and this might be hard to understand, but everyone gets to see him and there’s no sanctity in it.” Henry glances over at Alex, and even in the dim orange light of the fire, he can make out the emotion in his eyes. “He was world-renowned, beloved, it’s not like he was some random man from Cardiff. Everyone knew him, but not everyone knew him. They can miss him, but not like all of us do. He was our dad, and yet sometimes it feels like he doesn’t belong to us. Which is a whole convoluted thing with how my entire life has been; it belongs to the Crown, it belongs to England.”
It’s then that Henry releases a hefty breath and lowers himself down onto the grass, he and Alex swapping positions. Alex just watches.
“Maybe that’s why I love his lesser-known movies more, because less people have seen them, even if it’s only by a marginal amount. It makes it feel…more, I don’t know, personal.”
Henry’s right, Alex never is going to understand it. He’s lucky enough not to know what it’s like to lose a parent that young. And the thing is, until Henry, Alex never even thought to consider himself lucky about it. But there’s a whole other level of appreciation he has now, one he hopes he never neglects.
“Maybe I drank too much today,” Henry says mildly, sitting up again and shaking the bottle. There’s a little under a quarter of the wine left. “Getting all emotional.”
“No.” Alex scoots in closer, rubbing circles on his back. He’s warm through his shirt. “No, baby. It’s okay. Don’t minimize it.”
He watches as Henry goes to say something, but closes his mouth. “I—thank you, Alex.”
“What for?”
“Always listening.”
Alex could melt. “It’s the easiest thing in the world.”
i have no idea who to tag y'all, so feel free to share if you can!

The taylor zakhar perez hashtag just full of praise for Nicholas acting and twitter full of anonymous messages asking for his recast because he's not as good as Nick. That shit hurts and I can't even enjoy the new content I'm tired of the hate that man has been getting for a year and a half (it's not about Nicholas I love him so much)
First and foremost this is awful and Taylor doesn't deserve any of this unfair critism that are frankly insults, it's fucking sick
I will say this about the acting (and I'm typing this while listening to the podcast where Matthew talks about how well suited the boys are for the roles)
Both of them nailed their roles. But because of how the roles are written, certain things show easily than others.
Henry is more emotional sensitive and "broken", and because that's kind of an unhealthy mentality which isn't the normal state of human being, it's easier to pick up, which is why even with a surface glance audience can pick up on Nick's intensity and level of performing. For example, Henry spiraling on the lake. It's a crescendo of negative emotions, and you can see it go from opposite of the previous emotion (happy and content) to increasing panic and heartache.
Alex is the healthier one, in the movie he doesn't have much baggage as Henry does, but he does have baggage. At first Alex might seem like a sunshine puppy or something but if you paid attention to the details which Taylor does, you can read so much more. His fingers fidgeting whenever he's nervous like when Henry's taking off his clothes or Zahra barging in looking out. Like him clenching his jaw and watching every second of Henry's face when he goes in. Like how you can feel the aggressiveness in him die down as Henry shouts his thoughts during the Kensington confrontation. Like how fucking in love he looks all conveyed in his eyes.
So TL DR and this is my understanding of the performance: the tricky part for Nick is not to go overboard so that it's too dramatic to the point of being unrealistic, while the tricky part for Taylor is too not under perform it that Alex becomes one dimensional. AND BOTH BOYS NAIL IT PERFECTLY.
But for people who watch it passively, or watch it with negative assessment already in mind, it's easier to miss Taylor's details than Nick's details.
I WANNA MAKE IT PERFECTLY CLEAR THAT I DON'T AGREE WITH THE SHIT TAYLOR'S GETTING I DON'T AGREE WITH ANY OF THIS AND TAYLOR JUST IS ALEX TO ME
But this is a speculation from the acting perspective as to part of the reason why Taylor's getting so much shit
Also Twitter people are just another fucking type of crowd who mostly should use their life to do something better (I'm not on Twitter and never will be) and I'm convinced that there's still racism involved in these commentary even if it's internalized or latent
Anyone who says Taylor should be recast or is not as good as Nick either didn't actually pay attention to the movie or don't understand Alex. Taylor read the book 8 times. Matthew and Nick, the two most important people in regards to his performance, have nothing but praise for him.
Taylor is Alex, just as Nick is Henry.
Hopefully after a while these stupid "opinions" die down and only intelligent/genuine/constructive comments will be left and things will get better. And I truly hope Taylor can see more support than insults. He doesn't deserve any of this.
I'm sorry that this has affect you, and I understand it. Honestly this is why I don't directly look at tags, especially the actors' tag, block whoever I don't wanna see or deal with, and don't go on Twitter.
Just from my experience on dealing with shit like this, I would say give yourself some distance from RWRB and social media for a bit, even if it's a day or two, and come back when it hurts less. Take a bit of a break. And avoid places you know you will see shit like this as much as you can.
Both of the boys did amazing, and imo perfectly in the movie and in these roles, and they deserve all the love and support. Both of them.

🌹SDV Elliott HC 💃
Content warning: Americanized contexts ahead. 😅 Not pigeonholing SDV as American but I'm using Americanized regionalisms because that's the language I have to communicate I'm trying to portray. 🤷‍♀️
************
It takes a high heart level and a moderate intoxication level to bring it out, BUT Elliott has had years of ballroom dance under his belt.
I'm imagining a southern old-money style upbringing for him (subject to change) and he started being trained in different dances bc he was involved in whatever the male version of debutantes is.
he wasn't big into it at the time but yknow mommy issues he was a diligent well-mannered young man so he learned enough to pass by.
enter university and Prince Slut (freshman year) is finding all kinds of ways to get the tender physical touch and affection he craved as a child make friends and finds the uni's ballroom dance club
his foundation of skill and reputation make him insanely popular within the club so it becomes a genuinely healthy outlet for him.
he never takes it seriously in terms of competition; he's just there to have fun and make his partner shine but you KNOW he's flaunting and flexing along the way, like executing daring moves with his partner, showboating, getting so overly sultry with it, etc.
he gets so many numbers and so much ass whenever he goes out, it's upsetting.
anyway tl;dr he spends so much time on that and other social activities in college that he barely passes most of his classes and it's actually a huge regret of his but that's a whole 'nother post
he stops dancing after uni for the most part as he has to reprioritize his life
but that doesn't mean that he lets it go, oh no.
get enough drinks in this man and enough room to move and he's 10years younger ready to sweep anyone off their feet.
He'll trot with the foxes, swing from one coast to another, cha-cha real smooth, give him tequila and he'll give you salsa, etc etc
of fucking course he can waltz but like 1) ya Basic, and 2) dinner and a movie first (and let's make it Viennese, for the love of Yoba)
he'd much rather rumba or tango tbh but only with someone he really cares about. poor boy'll catch feelings quick rocking hips like that.
which like. alternate ending to the 6heart scene has him inviting you to dance with him to blow off some steam. nothing too stilted or sensual, just an easy swing or something so he can move and move you and maybe even give you a twirl if you're so inclined 😉
(at 8hearts and above he's twirling you, dipping you, and rocking you on his hips during wrap-ins 🥴🥴 you've also unlocked private rumba, tango, and waltzes with him, and boy is it getting humid in this seaside cabin 🥵🥵)
it does take getting him at least buzzed to bring it out, but he has no shame once it's out, so it's like an open secret in Pelican town that he'll show anyone who's a good sport a good time
EXCEPT.
(and this is a big one)
he's so fucking judgey about what music people choose to dance to.
full on Big Sassy Gay energy.
"oh you want to slow dance to [Ed Sheeran]? yeah I remember being in middle school too."
"*Thinking Out Loud playing* is this the wedding song where people teeter back and forth like two rickety sideways rocking chairs with room for Yoba in between because your grandma's watching for three straight minutes? ...no yeah it's fine. I mean to their credit it probably functions as their run through for the consummation later too so good for them I guess"
*I Won't Give Up playing* "if you need to dance to a song where someone else declares how you're So Definitely going to be together forever, I'm sorry but I give it two years tops." "Elliott, this was Haley and Alex's song." "I said what I said. Next."
"*dramatic sigh* just because you can mathematically fit a 5 step into a 4/4 doesn't mean you can or should turn any bubblegum pop song about casual sex into a tango. It's NOT about sensuality, it's about THE CONFLICT THEREIN."
just take him home at this point. 😅 no one understands what he's saying but they know it's probably insulting.
anyway fast forward to domestic bliss and he's regularly pulling you in to show you how happy you make him
he's definitely singing any lines he thinks fit you under his breath while he dances with you. He'll bring you in close and murmur them into your ear or kiss them into your neck if he's got bedroom thoughts. 🌹

Brand new interview with Scott. He is talking about his new show Alert, the special bond he has with Alex, and his movie career in general.
AVC:For a lot of actors, especially after playing a character for a long time, there are certain mannerisms or parts of past characters that might creep into the new characters they play. Do you see any similarities between Jason and maybe Danno from Hawaii Five-O or any of the other characters you’ve played?
SC: I’d like to say no, but I guess the answer is of course, right? I don’t care if you’re playing a part that’s the opposite of you. You gotta figure out a way to put the most of you into that person that’s not like you, so yes, I guess the pitfall of doing the same character for such a long time is that you can’t help but have little bits or mannerisms from other characters come into play. When you do a movie, you can really dig in and become somebody else for two months for 90 minutes of cinema, as opposed to when you’re doing a show, [and] the character kind of becomes you or whatever version of yourself that you’ve created from the beginning. After two seasons, three seasons, there is no separation between you and [the character], which is good and bad, right?
AVC: Ending a show almost feels as difficult as starting and launching one. How do you feel about the way Hawaii Five-O wrapped up?
SC: To be honest, I don’t remember how they were wrapped up. [Laughs] I literally have no clue. You could tell me, and I’d be like, “Okay, yeah.” But as far as a job, man, the people I was working with on a daily basis, even the ones I didn’t like, were still family. I was closer to a lot of the people on that show—crew members and other actors—than I was with family members.
Alex [O’Loughlin] and I went through so many ups and downs. That dude’s my brother for the rest of my life. And sometimes I wanted to strangle him, and sometimes he wanted to strangle me. [Laughs] But that dude’s my family until the day I die.
AVC: You and Alex became the show’s fan-favorite duo with your explosive ability to banter and bounce off of each other on and off the set. What do you miss most about working with him in particular?
SC: Look, I think that’s the key to any show: The people you’re watching have that banter. And by the way, let me just reiterate: I didn’t want to strangle him more than I did want to strangle him. But I’m just saying after 10 years, there were moments he wanted to kill me [Laughs].
I just miss working with somebody [where] we have so much history and it was just easy. You couldn’t throw us an acting problem that we couldn’t solve together. And I don’t mean any disrespect, but when you’re trying to write 25 episodes in nine months, some of it is not going to work on the page. And a lot of the time, they would hand us something [where] Alex and I had to figure out how to make it work. And by the end, we didn’t really have to talk. I’d just look at him, point to a line, and he’d be like, “Yeah, yeah, I got it.” We’d know how to get through scenes, and then I knew his strengths. When there was something that could be fixed with his strengths, I’d back up. And when he knew that there was something that I could fix, he would back up. It takes a while to build that.
There’s a power struggle in the beginning of a show. I think I’m really good at certain things, but the people I’m working with don’t know that I’m good at it. I feel like I know how to make a scene that’s not working work, and when you’re working with new people, they may think, “Well, why does he think he knows?” And it’ll take me six or seven episodes for them to go, “Oh, okay, Scott knows how to do that part.” And then there’s certain things where I have to figure out, “Oh, Dania knows how to do that part.” We’re just getting there now, and who knows if we get another season, right? So we might just have to start over with another show or we’ll continue on.
The thing with Alex and I is, we could figure anything out easily and our egos would, for the most part, go this way [motions his hands separating and going in different directions]. We’re two alpha males. Season one, we were like, “I know!” [Motions his fists to clash] “No, I know, I know! I got this.” By season four, five, and six, our egos kind of floated away a little bit, and we were able to work together and figure out anything.

pavitr headcannons !
Tumblr media
don’t know his canon birthday, but i see pav as a sag sun, cancer moon, pisces rising, sag mercury, libra venus, and cancer mars
he really loves astrology but he uses vedic astrology instead of tropical
everytime he feels like he’s made a new friend or feels comfortable with someone, he IMMEDIATELY asks for the birth chart
he really loves video games, especially sonic
his fave character is amy :)
hobie and pavitr play any and every decision based game ever made (life is strange, until dawn, undertale, etc.)
gwen and pav have a minecraft world where they allow NO ONE else to hop into (they’re very territorial over this)
they build like these extravagant houses from the ground up
literally they built a skyscraper from the ground up in creative ?!
aside from this one server, pavitr mainly plays in survival with gayatri, miles, and hobie whenever he feels up to it
aside from the classics he grew up with, he really likes kpop and indie music
his ults are itzy, twice, and nct dream convince me otherwise
he doesn’t really listen to many soloists, but likes chungha, taemin, and sunmi
has definitely learned the wannabe choreo and flaunts that he can do the ryujin shoulder move CONSTANTLY 😭😭😭
it’ll be mid conversation and he just starts doing the shoulder move
outside of kpop though, he really likes clairo, alex sloane, hojean, niki, the nbhd, conan gray, hemlocke springs, and other artists in this soundscape
he gets so excited when he finds south asian indie artists
his love language is definitely acts of service and physical touch
this shows through a lot with the amount of times he’s cooked his cultural foods and baked pastries for the people in his life
he loves seeing people’s satisfaction after eating his food
gwen has definitely said some of his dishes were too spicy tho 😭😭
he accommodates her by making a smaller, less spicy dish for her whenever he cooks for gwen
aside from chai, he’s really good at making different teas and coffee
lattes, americanos, macchiatos, green tea, chamomile, you name it, pav can make it !
because of this, he’s been dubbed the group’s chef and barista
miles LOVES whenever pavitr decides to crash in his dimension because of his chai and green tea specifically
another way pavitr shows his love is by playing with peoples hair
if you let him, he’s just always trying to braid hair or just combing through it with his fingers
or with people with afro textured hair like miles, he’s always putting it in cornrows after he watched many tutorials on it
playing with gayatri’s hair is always the most relaxing to him tho
speaking of him and gayatri, they’re like couple of the year to his friend group in the spider society
“y’all are so cute, it’s kind of gross”
“but you and miles aren’t gross?”
“pav, we aren’t a couple”
“with the way y’all stare at each other, might as well be”
him and gayatri love going on dates where they’re in nature
picnics, hiking trails, wherever
if it’s a rainy day, they love watching studio ghibli movies or playing video games together
he still hasn’t mustered up the courage to tell gayatri he’s spiderman
sometimes his spiderman duties makes him miss plans with gayatri and he sometimes feels really terrible about it
he makes it up to her by baking her favorite pastries and doing her favorite things with her :)
he also likes making bracelets, necklaces, and rings for her
he got into jewelry making because of hobie teaching him
when him and miles get closer, he starts putting all the drawings miles gives him on his wall
he’s very sentimental with all the things his friends gives him

I also have another one. What the marriage candidates ideal date would be. Like where they would go and what they would do.
Aside from the cannon ones in their heart events, what else would they do.. hmm..
Da ladies:
Haley: if she could do anything without worrying about money, responsibilities, ect she'd want to go on a couple's vacation somewhere beautiful like Dubai or Greece. She'd want to take so many pictures with you!! Let her feel like a travel influencer for a bit
Emily: any time spent with you us her favorite, but something where she can teach you something or show u her interests or learn about yours is ideal
Leah: is it really a date if all she wants to do is paint you? 🤣 that's really what she wants.
Abigail: take her to explore somewhere interesting! Take her down in the mines and teach her how to fight, or take her to an abandoned haunted house at night to try and find ghosts
Penny: she'd love to go to a beautiful garden and have lunch there with a fancy tea set
Maru: take her to an observatory!!! Or a science museum!!
Da fellas:
Sebby: he's a simple emo man. Either just chilling under a gazebo while it rains and watching frogs and ducks go by in the lake or having a chill mall date like a true emo
Sam: as much as a romantic he can be, he'd much rather have fun at a party or concert with you! Sure, he could do the basic dates, but he likes these better
Alex: traditional wine and dine date, but not bc hes boring or anything, he just watches too many cheesy hallmark romance movies with his grandma
Elliot: another wine and dine date, but bc he wants to romanticize his life like a romance novel lmao
Shane: not a traditional date guy, he'd call anything a date if it's you two together. Painting a building together? A date. Taking a walk together? A date. He's not picky, he just likes to spend time with you
Harvey: he tries to be very original with dates. He just wants to impress you and be creative, you never know where he's gonna take you next!

Teen star of RTE's Kin reveals how show got her in trouble at school
School goer Hannah Adeogun plays Michael's estranged daughter Anna
SHOWBIZ By Katie Gallagher   11 OCT 2021 (X)
...Lifting the lid on how she tapped into that inner emotion within her complex character, Hannah revealed writer and creator Peter McKenna encouraged her to draw from her own life experiences and life as a teenager today.
And the star, who caught her first break three years ago as Ella on Irish drama Women on the Verge, said that often proved draining to portray.
But she credited the show boss, and her co-star Charlie Cox, who plays Michael for helping her throughout the process.
“It was really great having them there to help me because becoming Anna is emotionally draining and it takes a lot to pull all those emotions.. Because she is going through so many emotions. And to have them there, to say you are doing great really helped. Becoming Anna with them was really great and I couldn’t have asked for better people to do it with.”
The school goer also told how she and her parents couldn’t help but ‘fangirl’ over the group of huge stars she was starring alongside in the new RTE hit.
“Especially Ciaran Hinds,” she said. “I was a big fan girl over Ciaran Hinds because he was in the last Harry Potter movie, so when I found out he was in it, I had a really big fan girl moment. I’m not in any big scenes with him, but knowing he is in the same TV show that I am in was such a big achievement for me, and it made me really proud of myself.
“And my dad was obsessed with the fact I was working with him [Charlie], because he was in Daredevil. And when I found out he was in it, I watched it, and was even more intimidated by it and I was so shocked and like ‘oh now I have to up my game and be really mature with how I do this.”

Charlie Cox interview: the actor on Irish crime drama Kin and when he’s returning to the MCU as Daredevil
Charlie Cox discusses the UK debut of his crime drama Kin, his upcoming Netflix show Treason, and his Marvel Cinematic Universe return
By Alex Moreland     24th February 2022 (X)
On another note, but kind of picking up on that idea of family, which is a big theme in the show: some of your best scenes were with Hannah Adeogun, who plays Michael’s daughter. She’s 15, which is a little bit younger than you were when you started acting professionally – did that prompt you to reflect back on your own career at all? Did you have any advice for her at all?
Charlie Cox: “Hannah was fantastic, and I loved doing the scenes with her. I loved working with her – it was really exciting to me, and challenging, because it’s the first time I’ve played a father on screen, and I am a father. It was exciting to kind of, you know, bring my own experience into that relationship.
I feel like – I know it’s probably only a few years difference – but I got my first professional job I think at 19. For me, there was a big difference between 15 and 19. I also I think Hannah was 14 when we shot this? Maybe I’m wrong about that. But I had left school, and I’d also had other jobs and stuff, I’d worked, so it was slightly different.
I don’t tend to offer advice unless I’m asked, and Hannah seemed to have it all. I remember, there was an audition where they asked me to read with her. She did it one way, and it was good, it was fine. And then Diarmuid [Goggins, who directed the first four of Kin’s eight episodes] spoke to her a bit about the scene and blah blah blah – she did it again, and it had a new depth to it. That was enough for me, and for all of us, I think to say right, well, she’s got whatever it takes. She’s got it. I guess, you know, the thing with acting is it’s about how easily can you access it, once you’re in front of a camera or in front of a crew? That’s the question.”

RWRB Essay Part Nine: Queer Identity
Word Count: 511
"The conformity of the closet cannot be answered with the forced conformity in coming out of it." - Alex Claremont-Diaz
I have never heard such a beautiful sentence regarding coming out. It could not be more perfect, especially considering how people immediately started assuming that Taylor and Nicholas are straight men playing queer roles.
As far as I know of, neither of them have publicly discussed their identities, and they do not have to. That does not give anyone the right to assume they're straight. If they are, I see that only as another testament of their skill and talent as actors. If they aren't, then they aren't and maybe they used their own personal experiences as part of their performances. Either way, they don't have to tell us. They have a right not to.
Nicholas obviously did a fucking phenomenal job with Henry and was amazing in portraying how that lifestyle can effect someone like him. He was truly heartbreaking to watch in his sad scenes.
The multiple lines where Alex discusses being bisexual are fantastic. The B is not silent! Having his bisexuality continuously reenforced to the audience was a great call, and they did it without being obvious about it. It's not like he's saying it every five minutes, but he doesn't just say "I like both" and never mention it again. He specifically uses the label bisexual when speaking to Henry and telling his mom. It's important for people to hear that word and be unable to ignore it.
Even though Alex had less of a crisis about being bisexual than in the book, there was still an arc to his confidence in his label. You can feel the uncertainty early on through Taylor's performance. Alex pretends to be suave and confident, but as soon as he goes to tell Henry his label, it takes him a second to say it. Then in Paris before their first time, he admits he's never had sex with another man before, and is clearly nervous. Taylor nailed those moments where Alex's confidence cracks. And you can see Alex become more comfortable with the label as the movie continues. When his mother asks, he's laughing and simply says "I'm bi" without any preamble, unlike when he needed a minute to breathe before saying it to Henry.
Speaking of his mother, although they didn't have the time to do the PowerPoint presentation, they still made sure to have Ellen not just be accepting, but supportive too. She doesn't just say "okay, that's cool", but takes it seriously as a part of her son's life. As embarrassing as it is to have your mom talk sex with you, it shows how she was immediately prepared to help him feel safe and healthy while being in a relationship with a man. She did not tiptoe around it or shy away from it. That is not just acceptance, that is support. That is important.
This movie is important in so many ways. It is honestly still hard to believe it exists.

Extended authors' note: Lost Wardens bits from the bins
I saw making the rounds this one post about the secret lore authors have about their own stories/fics, so I feel like sharing some stuff about the longfic/novel that finally crossed that AO3 line to Completed yesterday. Just some behind the scenes stuff, if anyone's so inclined. Big spoiler-y things are after the cut.
Here's the fic.
Here is a playlist, and here are the playlist notes with tiny spoilers.
Here are some videos of influencer crabber (! — feel like that's something Alex would have enjoyed, lol) Luke McFadden that I watched for some references. I also watched a whole bunch of FV Miss Paula content, and that's where I learned about the crab tagging Alex does with the scientists. Pretty sure I still got some details wrong; feel free to correct me 'cause I ain't no crabber! They use "hawk" to refer to what I called a "marker buoy" in my fic, for instance, but I wanted to avoid confusion with another type of crab trap called a crabhawk.
By happy coincidence, it was actually Stardew Valley's seventh anniversary yesterday. I wasn't aware when I hit post on those last chapters, but I'm very glad. Wouldn't have made any of this without ConcernedApe's own labor of love.
Sections:
Origins
Wardens of Magic, Go!
Jonathan
Cathy
Mr. Qi and Sandy
Calendar math
Personal/other writerly stuff
Origins
The first chapters of The Lost Wardens went up on AO3 on 03 Nov 21, but I definitely started working on this a lot earlier — 07 June 21, according to the file details in Docs. The original title was A Comparative Study of Southern Ferngill Crab Trap Designs. There were a bunch of attempts to get this going before I finally knew where I wanted to go:
Crabber Mullner - 07 June 21
Comparative Bins - 01 July 21
The Lost Wardens 0 - 05 July 21
The Lost Wardens - 28 Aug 21
NaNoWriMo prep doc - 16 Oct 21
Wardens Annex - 04 Jan 23
I like to keep a "Bin" file of scraps, scene drafts, notes, etc. that I cut or revise but don't want to delete entirely. Lots of frozen darlings in there, lol. Looks like I finally figured out the direction I wanted to go at the end of August, when my third draft document became the main working one. Wardens Annex was set up just this year only because the main doc got too unwieldy for my phone's memory.
Anyway, I just wanted to write a love story in the style of cheesy TV movies. It was supposed to be about 3-5 chapters long; I thought my Seb fic was kicking off a bunch of these short fluffy pieces about different characters in the Valley.
So, in "Comparative Study", Alex was supposed to get hit by a truck and break his arm right before his big tryout, and as he processed how much this was going to change his life, he was supposed to learn that what he wanted was ✨💖right there all along💖✨. Leslie is surprise pregnant, Alex proposes, the end.
But, as you maybe know by now, another idea crept in, and I started thinking about the not-so-secret magic in the game and the little bits of lore we glean from stuff like that one Lost Book in the Pelican Town library. I liked the idea of a magical ensemble of some kind, too. I've always loved stuff about superpowered/magical teams, so I started to think about what kind of group would make sense in the world of Stardew Valley.
Originally, Rasmodius in crow form was supposed to cause the truck crash in an attempt to keep Alex from leaving the valley and not becoming warden. Jonathan, on the other hand, was all for letting Alex decide his own fate. In the final story, we only hear from Rasmodius in the penultimate chapter, but he figured a lot more in the early drafts, haha.
Digging around in the bins, I see the original group of younger wardens was going to include Abigail on the mountain, Leo in the forest, Jas with magic, and Vincent for memory. I wanted to end with Alex now in the role of mentor, as Jonathan had been to him. But as I got into Abigail's hidden ancestry and thought about Leo being raised by Linus, I felt that putting Abby on the mountain didn't really make sense. (She can still have a sword if she wants, though.)
The next group of younger wardens I had in mind was Alex, Leslie, Sebastian, Abigail, and Leah (forest). I also had ideas of Leah/Sebastian going on in the background. That didn't pan out once I decided to drop Leah from the group (sorry, Leah fans).
Anyway, I'd written about seven chapters out of these beginnings and then decided that the stakes didn't feel big enough. Alex's choice didn't feel like a real one. What was going to stop Alex from ultimately getting over what Rasmodius did and choosing to be warden, when it was basically the only good opportunity in front of him? I realized that the crash couldn't happen, and it was starting to feel too melodramatic for me, anyway. Gridball had to be back on the table. I had to start again.
Wardens of Magic, Go!
I am not kidding about the magical ensemble thing. I had them associated with different weapons and bird avatars but decided the weapons weren't really going to come into play.
Leslie - lowlands - black-naped oriole - golden scythe
Alex - sea - osprey - trident
Abigail - mountain, later memory - mockingbird/whip-poor-will - galaxy sword (gifted) or dagger
Sebastian - magic - crow - wand/staff
Leo - forest, later mountain - parrot - slingshot/bow
Sandy - desert (kinda; it's unclear just how much Qi's handiwork has distanced his domain from the rest of the Circle over the years) - red-tailed hawk - ? (whip, lol)
Boon Kiat - lowlands - [Eurasian] tree sparrow
Jonathan - sea - osprey
Joanna - memory - mockingbird
Cathy - forest - horned owl
Rasmodius - magic - crow
Qi - desert - vulture
Linus - bald eagle
Jonathan
In the early versions, Jonathan was a more benign figure who simply encouraged Alex to make his own choices. He even supported Alex and Leslie's relationship; he just wanted to make sure Alex could freely decide what was best for Alex.
But as the story shifted, I started to feel Jonathan needed more to do. I thought more about what would drive Jonathan's interest in Alex's life. I hit upon the idea that it should be Jonathan, not Rasmodius, who is responsible for Alex's troubles. Next to Cathy, Jonathan was the most hurt by Raul and Joanna. So, who was he, really? And how far was he willing to go to keep Alex from going through what he did?
It was also probably around that time that I stopped calling him Samuel and his boat the Amaranth, lol. I was still kind of fresh from a Dishonored kick and wanted to maintain a connection. But as Alex's skipper became more his own character, he and his boat needed their own names.
I'd always planned for him to be the old mariner, and a good number of people guessed that early on. The thing is, though, the old mariner is a spirit. Jonathan was not yet a spirit, and he had stuff to do before that happened.
As a consequence of these changes, Alex spent a lot of the fic avoiding Jonathan and being mad at him. I realized that maybe too late; it became a problem when I had to write the final chapters. I started to worry that I'd only told people how much of a father figure Jonathan had been to this boy; maybe I hadn't shown it enough. The first drafts had more scenes of the two of them working together, joking around, having heart-to-hearts, etc. — stuff, I feel, would have strengthened the impact of Alex's conflicting feelings about the skipper once he found out the truth. This was the main reason for the flashback in Ch. 25; I hope it worked.
As for the big challenge showdown that never was, Rattle said something somewhere about how there doesn't always have to be a big fight with the "villain"; sometimes the villain turns out to be not bad at all, and sometimes the real villain is just trauma or indecision or life. Jonathan is sometimes an antagonist, but I never really saw him as a villain, just as someone who made questionable decisions in the name of protecting someone vulnerable and young. I wanted Alex's future to always end up in his own hands and for his heart to lead him there.
Cathy
I had also planned to write something to fill in the gaps about Cathy's life. We would actually see the "movie" in Ch. 24. Maybe Alex deciding last-minute that he didn't need to see it was a cop-out, but I just decided I didn't want to write this part anymore. Maybe it would've been too much of a detour from his own story, and I was already setting up a lot of pins to knock down as it was.
So, for those who're wondering, Cathy and Joanna had always been competitive. They were both cunning and charming, but Joanna was older and prettier and definitely got more attention. Cathy was open to Raul's advances, partly because the young wizard could get it, and partly because it would get one up over her sister. Soap operatic, maybe, but also human, maybe.
The reason for her "academic drift" away from forestry and her ending up at Fish and Wildlife after the big blow-up is Jonathan. His stepping in to shield her from Joanna left a faint magical imprint or echo, and part of the "drift" was driven by her own subconscious reaching for something familiar.
A while back IRL, there was a bunch of news stories about spies being outed, and for some reason they were all professors. My SO (works with some international academics) reasoned that it was because they can come into contact with and influence powerful people under the guise of advising and research. I entertained ideas of some intelligence agency using Cathy's memory problems, conference trips, and government ties to cover up the smuggling of documents and data. She could even be aware of it; she was cold enough when it came to JojaFish. But, as I'd already decided not to fully write out her story, I didn't develop these ideas more.
This might also be a good place to mention that I'd thought of having the war with Gotoro be one of the ripple/butterfly effects of the older Circle breaking apart. But I abandoned that idea, too.
Mr. Qi and Sandy
I love them. I hoped to get into their backstory at some point, but I never did work it in. Mostly because I was a coward and didn't want to get hate about their age difference.
Sandy was one of Joanna's first doves. Qi found her and kept her for a while, out of curiosity. As he grew attached and then concerned about how brief doves' lifespans are, he asked Joanna to un-dove the kid, and then he placed her with some business associates who were having trouble adopting. He barely saw her after that; he was too busy with growing his empire and was content to be a distant godfather who sent birthday and Winter Star presents.
When Sandy, strangely drawn to the desert and the Oasis, came looking for a job, Qi recognized her as his successor. He trained her in all the ways of hotel/hospitality management, and in magic. They developed an excellent collegial friendship. Qi suspected he might have even stronger feelings but kept them to himself, told himself to focus on business. He was about twice her age and blue; it wasn't gonna happen.
Even if he had (has) no plans of dying at a normal time, he decided to bring up his succession plans to Sandy at some point. She was the one who said it would be more fun if they got married.
Calendar math
This fic received the most planning I've ever put into a fic. You might have seen my map and notes on geography. I also downloaded a blank calendar and worked out where some dates would land if each season lasted three months instead of one. Here's a glimpse:
Tumblr media
Of course, this makes Alex a Cancer. 🦀
I also read up on fetal development and pregnancy in case anything Leslie was experiencing might be good to mention. Admittedly, I could have done that more. But after Alex went to training camp, he was around her less, and I also just focused on him more.
Tumblr media
Personal/other writerly stuff
As you can maybe tell, I really love the sea. I think working on this fic helped me reacquaint myself with that love. There's so much focus on farming and the farmer in a lot of SDV fan work, but I really enjoyed digging into the fact that Pelican Town is a seaside town — and in the process, I got to think about all the things I loved about growing up close to the sea myself.
I know I also resorted to a lot of figures of speech related to music. Maybe they're crutches for me at this point, but explaining things the way I'd describe music or moving through water or water moving (plus weather, especially storms) is maybe the best way I know how to verbalize the thought or feeling I want in the story. Under the ecliptic zodiac, I'm an earth sign, and under the Chinese zodiac, my element is fire. But water and being in or close to the water gives me a sense of equilibrium and clarity; maybe it's a balancing thing (says the person who also says she doesn't believe in astrology). Outside of the water, the next thing that gives me that is music.
This fic also saw me processing some personal stuff about life stages and getting to move forward to the next one. Alex and Leslie's happy ending/beginning is a bit of wish fulfillment for me. They channel magic through their work, which means they will still go through all the mundanity and struggle of farming/crabbing/fishing, but they will have a home together at the end of every day. I am working toward the quiet magic of love in my everyday, too.
I have some ideas for the next thing I want to write, but they need to simmer a bit. In the meantime, I'll go back to actually reading fics and seeing what else other people are writing (I try to avoid the AO3 feed during a big WIP to prevent idea osmosis).
Thanks for reading (especially if you got this far, lol). Leave a note or a comment if you like. :)

My Week(s) in Reviews: October 16, 2022
Halloween Ends (David Gordon Green, 2022)
Tumblr media
Most of this doesn’t feel anything like a Halloween movie. Some of it still works, only not as an addition to this franchise. That being said, like Halloween Kills before it, Halloween Ends has some extremely enjoyable, over-the-top violence. Also like Halloween Kills before it, the final five minutes has some of the most laughable, corny shit I’ve seen in the franchise, period. Jamie Lee is great as usual, easily rising above the quality of the severely lacking screenplay. And in the end, it manages to not be the absolute worst this franchise has given us, and that in itself should be considered a win. Or maybe not. I don’t care. - 4/10
Don’t Worry Darling (Olivia WIlde, 2022)
Tumblr media
Whoever read that final act and still agreed to throw a shitload of money and talent at this project should probably be fired. It actually made me question Florence Pugh’s judgement. However, she’s the film’s saving grace, and her performance is yet another slice of unique, calculated perfection, so I’ll forgive her. Wilde’s direction isn’t completely terrible, either. She’s got a fine eye for the terror-behind-the-perfection type of paranoia, here, and is able to deliver some fine moments before we reach that trainwreck of a final act. If only they could have stuck the landing. - 5.5/10
Blonde (Andrew Dominik, 2022)
Tumblr media
The worst part isn’t that it’s gratuitous, salacious and rarely focuses on anything but the worst aspects of her life. No, all that actually works wonders in this context. The worst part is that it’s such an overlong, tedious bore. Yes, there are some stunning, effective scenes throughout, and Ana De Armas is unsurprisingly good, but the scenes are too few and far between, and her performance isn’t nearly good enough to save the film from director Andrew Dominik’s worst tendencies, of which there are plenty. - 4.5/10
Athena (Romain Gavras, 2022)
Tumblr media
The plotting and acting are merely okay, but Gavras’s direction - the way the camera moves through each scene and the tension builds in the most natural, unpredictable ways - make this one of the bigger surprises you’ll stumble across on Netflix right now. - 8/10
Pinocchio (Robert Zemeckis, 2022)
Tumblr media
It’s unnecessary, sure. But worse, it’s devoid of any magic or wonder, whatsoever. - 3/10
Beast (Baltasar Kormákur, 2022)
Tumblr media
I didn’t care about any of these characters, and the CGI on the lion needed to be A LOT better. But other than that, it was a thrilling enough way to waste an hour-and-a-half. - 5/10
Meet Cute (Alex Lehmann, 2022)
Tumblr media
Significantly darker than it probably should’ve been. But I’m a sucker for rom-coms and for the time-loop plot device in general, so it kept me interested enough. I won’t remember it at all in a month’s time, probably, but I didn’t hate it while watching, so it did its job, I guess. - 4.5/10
Enjoy!

Greener
Part 1
In movies and books, we get foreshadowing, little hints to brace ourselves. It doesn’t work like that in the real world. Your life just shatters without warning, with no cushion, with no one around to help you. That’s how it felt at that time, what he started. That normal Thursday when I came home from work. and he asked to have a talk...
“I know you’ve felt it too. I can see how different you act. Around me, the house, you don’t even go out anymore with friends or coworkers.” My husband, Peter explained matter-o-factly. I didn’t speak. I could tell he had put a lot of time into what he was saying and needed to get it all out. His eyes were on the carpet and his hands moved as he spoke, though I still can’t recall everything that was said. I just remember how I felt.
Blindsided. Scared. Confused. Because I didn’t feel the things, he said I did. I was just tired. Or I thought I was. But he explained this great divide, a dying flame, two people simply cohabitating and my mind swirled as I looked back on the last few years with new lenses. And then he said it.
“I want to open up the marriage.”
And I couldn’t tell what hurt worse. The suggestion, or him not saying “our” marriage; it was just “the marriage”. This thing that happened and existed, not something we made together and chose.
“What?” I could hardly get the word out, but I managed. He closed his eyes and nodded his head while he clasped his hands together.
“I know, it sounds insane but there are tons of studies that say it’s healthy. And I’ve even met other married couples that have open marriages, and a lot of them said it saved their marriage.” I didn’t even know until that conversation we needed to be saved. I felt nauseous and touched my mouth, he continued. “It’ll just be a trial! One year. If we don’t see any improvement or feel any better about it after that, we’ll stop. End of story.”
I still had my work clothes on, a stiff pencil skirt and black blouse. He couldn’t wait to talk to me about it and that thought was another hard pill to swallow. Right after finding out he thought our marriage was failing. I rubbed my temples and exhaled a breath as I leaned forward.
“It feels so random...” I muttered, still in shock. Peter moved closer to me on the couch and rested his hand on my back.
“I wanted to wait and see if I could slowly introduce you to the idea, but I figured there wasn’t really a right way to do this sort of thing. I went with the band-aid method.” I couldn’t speak, so I only nodded as he continued. “If there’s a chance of us getting excited again, about something, I really think we should try it. Once.”  That’s really all I can recall about that night, everything else was just a haze. He continued to talk about how great it was going to be for us, and I went on…autopilot.
The next day at work I was still in a daze. Peter kissed me goodbye and went out for his day, mechanically I smiled and returned his “I love you”. After 6 years of marriage it was automatic. And that thought hurt my chest. He was my first, I was his. We blended so well together but to Peter that meant something completely different than it did to me. In the breakroom I stood by the coffee machine, watching the liquid slowly drip into the pot. Nightshift never made a fresh pot.
“Corrie,” I turned at my name and saw two of my coworkers entering the breakroom. “You hear? Major outage at the SBA. All hands-on deck.” Alex said as he grabbed a paper cup from the counter. Next to him Josh set his thermos on the counter and plucked a donut from the tray. I groaned.
“Another one? They just went down a week ago.” The coffee finished brewing; Alex nodded to me. I poured myself a cup and handed it over to him, turning to the sugar. “What is it this time?” I mixed my coffee and leaned against the counter.
“Their authentication tokens aren’t working, everyone is having to move through the building by typing their pins, programs they need aren’t launching.” Josh said as he poured the rest of the coffee into his thermos. I rolled my eyes and blew air on my coffee as I brought it to my lips.
We walked back onto the floor together, all of us feeling dread at the volume. Phones were ringing, people were talking, and our manager was standing around looking as clueless as ever.
“You three! Come on! All hands-on deck, I sent out the email.” He snapped. We nodded and dragged ourselves to our desks. Casting a look over at them I put my earpiece in and grimaced.
“Time to get blamed for the SBA running on outdated equipment.” They laughed and readied in with me. Our phones rang simultaneously.
I was happy it was Friday, and ready to go home. I even mostly forgot about Peter’s suggestion the previous night. All I could think of was eating pasta and watching Tv, curled in a blanket. Anything that was mindless and easy. But when I got home, there wasn’t a cozy casual Friday environment.
Peter was rushing around, his button up shirt was loose and his hair wet. He had one shoe in his hand and his keys in his other.
“Finally!” He hugged me when I walked through the door. “Can you help me find my other shoe? I’m already late.” I nodded and set my bags down, yawning. It was under the couch, his other shoe. I only knew that because he never put them on the shoe rack like I asked. He kissed me when I gave it to him and set on the couch to slip his shoes on.
“Where are you going? The boys?” I asked, plopping down on the loveseat across from him.
“No,” He looked up at me. “We talked about it last night. I have a date.”
My heart halted and my mouth went dry. I tried to keep my face cool, and judging by how relaxed he looked, I was succeeding.
“Oh. That was tonight? I didn’t think it would be so soon.” I stood up from the couch and walked into the kitchen, trying to pace my breathing. My husband asked me to find a shoe for his date. We talked about it? I couldn’t remember.
“Hey, you’re ok with this, right?” Peter stood in the entrance of the kitchen as I kept my back to him and pulled out the pots I would need for pasta.
“It’s an adjustment,” I said, filling a pot with water. “I just…we only just talked about it last night.”
“Hey, we got this. I know its weird,” He came up to me and rubbed my shoulders. “I decided to write everything down we discussed. We’ll go over it this weekend.” He kissed my forehead and turned away. “But right now, I’m late! See you tonight.”
Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays were for others, the rest of the week was for me. It wasn’t always a date, sometimes he said drinks, or a show. Three weeks into our open marriage I collapsed. I couldn’t keep it all in anymore I had to let someone in on it. I had to talk to someone. I knew as I dialed her number, I was making a mistake. She never forgets anything she’s told and will hold grudges to death. It was risky taking marriage issues to her, but I was desperate. The line rang a couple of times before I heard her voice in the speaker.
I couldn’t hold it in. I sobbed the second she asked how I was. Ugly sobs. Couldn’t form a word, sobs. She suggested we meet, and I agreed. While I couldn’t bring myself to find a date, drinking with a trusted friend seemed like it was just what I needed.
I met her halfway between both of our homes, a small bar and grill. I arrived first and ordered myself a drink at the bar. I was feeling stupid. I never talked about relationship problems with people because it was too easy for them to choose sides and hold secret resentment. I wanted to leave, but she arrived before I could.
Tori smiled as she approached, looking like a windblown model. Her dark gold hair was layered and styled, her lids lightly smoked, her Luis Vuitton bag hung on her arm as she swayed over to me, waving.
“Corrie!” She clicked over, high thigh boots not slowing her down. I stood to meet her, and we hugged. She smelled expensive and felt slim and fit. I felt like a mess. My hair was in a sloppy top bun, I wore a large, patterned button up shirt, open, over a black crop top and leggings, it was like a peasant hugging a queen. She took a seat next to me at the bar and signaled the bartender. “What has been going on? You look like you’ve been crying for days.” I half laughed and shrugged my shoulder. She ordered her drink and grabbed my hands. I cried.
She didn’t say anything, she just held my hands and I sobbed. When I stopped, she handed me napkins and pushed a fresh drink towards me that I didn’t realize she had ordered. A vodka cranberry. I gulped the drink and took a few breaths to steady myself and explained the last three weeks to her. She listened intently, nodding as I spoke, rubbing my arm when I got emotional, and when I finished, she leaned back in her chair.
“That’s…a lot, Corrie. And that’s serious. He basically forced you into a poly relationship you didn’t want. You have to tell him.” But I shook my head.
“I can’t. We agreed to a year. We can revisit terms along the way but…” I trailed off, poking at my straw. Tori ordered another round.
“Your plan is to, what, exactly? Not date for this entire year and when he wants to continue being open and you don’t, what then?” I didn’t like it explained that way, but it was a mostly accurate portrayal of events. I hadn’t even attempted a dating app, they never felt right to me. And I never had to use them, I had been with Peter since high school.
“Even if he did agree to close off the marriage again, I couldn’t look at him the same.” I stared at the ice in my glass, a fresh drink was place off to the side.
“Are you having sex with him?” She pulled a cherry from her glass and chewed it. I thought for a moment. “So that’s a no.”
“C’mon you know I’ve never been a super sexual person.” I protested, but she shook her head rolling her eyes.
“You ever think Peter’s just, bad at it?” I hadn’t. Why would I? He was always satisfied, so it had to mean something was wrong with me.
Around us the bar was filling up, the music was a bit louder, and the voices were rising. It was getting late, and a new crowd was moving in. Tori leaned closer to me; our shoulders touched as we talked. She handed me a book from her purse.
“Read this,” I looked down at my lap and saw the name Roze Gould in glittering font on the cover. “Not now, obviously, but give it a try. I want to know what you think.” I had never heard of the author, and the title Echoes on the Hills didn’t sound familiar.
“Why do you have a book in your purse?” I asked her, she tilted her glass to me.
“The fantasy, baby. Life is what you make it. I carry fantasy with me everywhere, sometimes it’s the only thing that gets me through the day.” I meant to ask her what she meant by that, but I never got to. We left shortly after and took separate Ubers home, neither of us able to drive. I felt a lot better after seeing her and talking to her. She took special care to not blow up and make my pain all about her anger, I felt lucky in that moment.
My head was spinning, and I felt lighter. No, we didn’t come up with any real solutions but being able to talk to someone and be understood, was the next best thing. I lazily looked out of the window at the passing scenery, and felt my phone vibrate. I pulled it out and tried to focus on the message, I shook my head and rubbed my eyes. I read it wrong.
“This is your Uber driver, Kyle. I’m in a red sedan, are you having trouble finding me?”
I looked around slowly at the vehicle I was in. There was one Uber sticker on the back window, and I couldn’t remember why I just assumed it was mine. I cleared my throat and sat upright.
“Um, excuse me, I left something back at the bar. Can we turn around?” I was suddenly aware of how covered the driver kept his face. A baseball cap over his eyes, his jacket collar upturned. And his hands had fucking gloves. I felt nauseous. “I’m gonna get sick!” I croaked out. The driver flashed his eyes at me in the mirror.
“Sit back!” He snapped. But I was pressing the window button and begging it to go down faster.
“I’m gonna barf all over this shit mobile—” I lied in panic. It was halfway down; I shoved my arms through and twisted my head to fit through the opening. The driver jerked the car to the right, but I hung onto the window. Below I could see the road flying by in a blur, everything was a blur. I didn’t think.
I kicked my feet off the seat and pushed myself through the window to the road below.

I finally watched Dunkirk and while I wasn’t immediately in love with it, I think there’s a lot of aspects that I did love, particularly the relationships between the characters and how we see people come together in times of duress/peril and are just as capable of showing one another kindness as they are of hurting one another.
and as opposed to painting war as this glorious thing, I liked that even the triumph at the end is still highlighted with anxiety, guilt, and this feeling of having let everyone down. And even when they are finally safe and the civilians are shown to be happy they’ve returned, these soldiers are still weighed down with everything - everyone - they’ve lost along the way.
Now, these are all just my thoughts as someone who has only just watched the movie. I don’t think it’s too revolutionary, but I am very happy to look for other people’s thoughts and even reviews. (I’m adding a read more for length as I just spitball my first impressions:)
while I didn’t quite understand George at first, after having time to sit with this movie and just let it really sink in, I think the touching thing about his character is that he dies proud. One could think he hasn’t done much, but even though he knew his end was coming, he didn’t regret helping the shivering soldier and instead considered it his one great moment that he had always longed for after a life of what he felt had been nothing. It was showing kindness to a man who was violent with fear.
and in turn, his death impacts Peter, the shivering soldier, and Alex.
Peter from the start has no patience with people, he is curt and even capable of being very mean. From the way he talks to George at times to locking the shell shocked Shivering Soldier in the closet. But by the end of the movie, after having to come to grips with George passing away right before him, I adore the fact that we see him soften. We see him treat George’s corpse preciously, and he tries to absolve the Shivering Soldier of any guilt he would/will feel about accidentally killing George.
And though the moment is passing, I think Alex’s handling of George’s body to make room for more soldiers shows that even though we’ve been questioning his morals after the death of Gibson, Alex is still capable of humanity. I think it even makes us question whether we can really judge him as a good or bad person, and whether we would react any different if we were backed into a corner?
I think my actual favorites were Collins and Farrier though, because even though Tom Hardy’s role as Farrier is more subtle than some of his other castmates’ roles, he managed to really captivate me. I like that even though we don’t see Collins and Farrier talk to each other face to face, I could feel their bond and the heartbreak of each one having to watch helplessly as they lose the other - first when Farrier sees Collins’ plane crashes into the ocean and then again when Collins sees Farrier fly to Dunkirk as he heads back to England.
I liked the comradery between them, and even between them and the third pilot that never even makes an appearance, already dead by the time the story begins. There’s something so gripping to me about the way they have no choice but to keep going when they lose someone, to see them compartmentalize the loss for later because they know they can’t turn back around to check on their brother in arms. It’s not that they don’t care, but they have a job to do, and I think it’s their way of trying to make sure their death isn’t for nothing... which I’m not even entirely sure Farrier knew Collins survived his crash, and I wonder just how much his belief in Collins’ death informed his decision to provide one last distraction to let the others get away as he gets taken as a prisoner of war. Would he still have done it if he knew Collins was alive? But even with that question posed... I believe the answer would remain the same. He absolutely would.
Farrier’s sacrifice was never just for one person, and regardless of Collins’ life status, the most important thing to him was giving soldiers enough time to retreat so they could fight another day and persevere, making all the loss they experienced on the shores of Dunkirk mean something.
His sacrifice wasn’t about glory and fame, but instead hope. it was choosing others over himself. and it was the only way he could see his defeat meaning something as he was out of gas and had no hope of making it home.

Once communication is set up, I start asking about anything. And they answer right away. And my head is buzzing as if they’ve put a swimming cap on me, and it’s squeezing my scalp, and you feel that your attention is focused on “Them.” That they are in your head. I asked about my assistant, for example. I ask them, “What can I do to help?”. They immediately respond in words and pictures. I see such a picture right in front of me as they speak, and it feels as if the information was in me all along... And when I write my books, conduct my presentations or book analyses, and I describe something, it’s like you were right there.
It’s amusing because I’m not doing this with my mind. It’s as if the questions that they want me to ask just appear in my mind. Therefore, I always ask a question to which they will always have an answer. It’s amusing. I ask them questions every day about everything. Most often, it is right before going to bed when I am alone. Understand that if you gave any person this opportunity, he would endlessly communicate and keep asking about this and that. But I have no such questions. And that is why I have this opportunity. Are you with me?
This is the actual source. This is the aliens. That is, this is God. He is one. This source is within me. It’s this connection with Wi-Fi, with these aliens. But it’s hard for you to imagine now because you imagine them as aliens. Let’s call it something else. You know when they say, “God is in each of us.” I felt this God in myself when I wrote the book. I wrote not from the mind but from God, from within. And people who still have God inside, who have not yet lost God, reacted to my books in the same way: “Wow, Alex, I relate to everything you wrote. And why? Because we share this soul, this consciousness, this thing inside. But our minds are different. One has one way of life, and the other has another, so everyone gets offended, everyone has issues, and everyone has different principles. And everyone loses their soul, their inner self.
And therefore, I wanted and kept my “Inner Me.” Or maybe the aliens wanted it. These aliens are me. Are you with me? You watch movies about happy people with an incredible life story. People who have created ingenious, unique things. These are people who did not become conservative jerks working for minimum wage in a bank. These are people who didn’t lose their Wi-Fi with the aliens.
