tho unfortunately, taking breaks aren't that easy, since when i don't make episodes, i just don't make money. besides, i actually don't mind the workload that much? it's everything...outside of working that seems to bum me out haha. i kind of like turning off my brain for 10 hours each day to draw episodes. usually when i'm sad, it's after work when that distraction is gone.
also, i do post more freely here already as is! i tend to be a bit more selective about what i share on twitter and IG, but since like 20 people follow me here, i'm a bit more open and share more things, both personal and CoB/OC related lol. i just haven't had a ton to share lately outside of text essays and answering asks.

It's kind of funny (heartbreaking) that there were multiple Ravens who wanted a number, to the point where some tried to manipulate Jean into helping them one way or another, but none of them would have been next in line. No matter what they did, there was always someone ahead of them on the list. Someone who wasn't even on the team. That someone wasn't Neil. Neil was a surprise to everyone, including Riko. That someone was Andrew.
Kevin might have had to beg Riko to go visit Andrew, and Riko might have laughed at Kevin and dismissed Andrew when Andrew turned him down, but make no mistake, if Andrew had accepted and had become a Raven, he would have taken that #4 spot within his first year.
If we're being real, Andrew had more of a chance at becoming part of the perfect Court than any of those Ravens ever had. Even Jean thinks of Andrew as one of them.
The other Ravens never stood a chance.

there seems to be far too many fans who can't seem to wrap their head around the fact that no relationship in the Vampire Chronicles is healthy. every relationship includes an element of abuse/power imbalance by normal standards. literally every single one.
they are all monsters who are no longer constrained by societal rules. so I don't think it's too crazy to expect them to do mosntorus things. the genre is Gothic HORROR. the show really prioritizes the HORROR element more so than other adaptaions, which i love.
i don't need louis to be a liar to enjoy lestat. if louis lied or misremebered things about the fight in episode 5, i literally do not care because it's never gonna make me hate louis. the baseline of what constitutes "evil" or "bad" is so different in iwtv because of the fact that they are NOT HUMAN. Claudia is literally a serial killer and she's still mother to me. ykwim?
the nature of vampirism is they have to kill to survive. so it would be really cool if people could accept louis, armand, and claudia as complex characters who are fundamentally not good people (because they aren't people!) without being racist about it. THEY ARE ALL KILLERS
im more interested in this exploration of the complexities of memory and seeing how the show integrates the other books into this story in a way that hasn't been done before than I am in discoursing about whether louis is a liar or not. who gives a shit???? grow up and realize that there are no good guys here and that's OKAY

Hi this is where I talk a bunch about ocs :D
I dont have a lot of time lately to talk abt lore but i still think abt my guys whenever i have some chill time to myself, so here's some patch notes. This is also just me thinking out loud haha
CD:
ive been playing w some changes for CD and seeing if they stick :] gonna make the story slightly more complex and the sides of the conflict also different (for example I am going to make hades and talas full on enemies at first along with connon, caval and silas >:3 (and I am also making silas and his monster form two separate characters so the lion (hal) is now a mount instead))
Specifically what I've been thinking about is making Hades either a ship captain or a first mate for a rogue ship. The deal with Hades is that he comes from a renowned family from Redbridge and is a disgrace to them. In previous versions of CD they were artisans but that never rly clicked for me, and recently I have been reworking Redbridge into a naval empire to add some 🤏spice 🤏to the world, which would mean Hades' family is actually a naval captain family putting him next in line to be one of them but since his thing is being a disgrace he takes off and becomes a rogue. And instead of hating leviathans he fucking hates hunters instead. Conversely, I think with these changes Talas would also NOT be inclined to kill hunters (or at least not as often as he currently does). He'd pick fights with the naval fleet and other similar factions instead which is more like his character.
I also wanna try and bring back an older concept I had where connon's ship was able to both become fully submerged (like the subs in sunless sea where her character originated from) and this other idea I had where a ship could split in half into two smaller ships. Like if a catamaran could split into two and flank a vessel on both sides. But we'll see if I can make this work x)
Dragons (broken horizon + extinction):
I vaguely mentioned this a while ago as well but I've also been thinking abt my dragons and how I kinda want them to all be in one world/setting, which includes both my broken horizon guys (cer, jarek, octane, etc) and my extinction guys (alex, c, orion, etc) but I dont know how to deal with all of the conflicting lore and themes.
Because for extinction the big theme is there are people who can turn into dragons, and technically all of the dragons' powers are based on energy (for lore reasons). Meanwhile for my other dragons I have a few different elements or other ways of using fire (eg instead of using straight up fire/energy, my oc Jarek can breathe out gas only and ignites it with his mandibles).
I miss all my dragons a lot so I kinda wanted to make a world for them where I could have them Vibe and do different stories in so I thought about having a dragon-only universe but unfortunately Extinction has a pretty huge human element that I cant just eliminate.
It feels counterintuitive, i know the first logical choice is 'just let them be different things' but I genuinely feel like the right choice is to put them both together so the characters can interact and the whole story can be deeper because as it is both are really shallow and I would really like for them to work together so that's what I've been picking at for some months now (it's um. been real slow)
For these two stories I do have two different vibes though that I've been wondering how to weave together nicely bc they overlap for some characters. For broken horizon I had flying and aerial racing as a big theme (and some of the chars in extinction would be rly into that) and for extinction I had dragon arena fights as a big theme (and some of the characters in bh would be rly into that) both of these is another of the reasons why I wanted to put them both together bc it feels like they can fit very well I just have to find the right idea for them to click and then itll be smooth sailing -w-
I also wanted to talk abt this in hopes that talking abt all the dragons gets me to think more about them as well
I wanted to make this post bc I've been really busy lately and rly absent from here in general and I don't have as much time to draw (or even think abt ocs) anymore but I still wanted to keep posted about what's been going on in my head and hopefully get some eyes on it and maybe even some feedback if anyone is so inclined

realizing that i am an outlier in fandoms because i do not ship anyone with anyone

this is so funny to me actually bcuz this is 100% how i talk abt my characters ages. i know what YEAR they were born and i know what rheir ages are supposed to be at the start of the story but i dont actually know when it takes place?? im really bad at math. There was a moment where rainbow was supposed to be 23 and i somehow accidentally made her 17 lmfao
#theoretically it would take place in 2021 bcuz thats when i created my object ocs but the more time passes#the weirder it feels to have it take place years in the past#i considered moving up their birthdays by a few years but like. idk i like their birthdays theyre cute :3#bubblegum is SUPPOSED TO BE 15 and she was born july 2007#watermelon is supposed to be 7 and he was born june 2014#etc etc#starr is 27 and she was born september uhhh 1995 or 1997 i actually dont remember. whichever one makes sense#also that would mean building block was born in 2020 and since she's always gonna be a baby the furhter away we get#it means that she wouldnt have even been born when the story is actually supposed to take place. okay so prewarning this one has spoilers for just roll with it: riptide episode 90 that was streamed on twitch today so if you havent seen it and plan to stop reading now ok? ok
so. jay ferin. i love her more than words can express. and in todays episode she seemed to have a bit of a moral dilemma in her head, and didn't outwardly express it much
and a little bit ago condi tweeted saying it was "interesting" how jrwi fans were pointing out her behavior as odd or different.
now some people would see a tweet like that and go "oh wow so is he planning a villain arc for jay or something?" but those people would be Wrong ive decided.
i think jay is having doubts about becoming a pirate. she had just finished telling an old friend that her crew was trying to make a positive change in the world, and convinced her enough for her to have let jay go.
and what happens as soon as she finds chip? the two of them kill someone. and yeah, it was self defense. but they killed someone, and their last words were a word of warning. a message saying that they had made a huge mistake, fucked over allport and potentially the world.
and IMMEDIATELY afterwards, gillion comes crashing down THROUGH THE GROUND AND INTO THE FUCKING OCEAN, with the weight of a fully packed 18-wheeler, killing a man on impact. and sure, kuba kenta was a fiend and absolutely would have killed gillion if gillion hadnt beat him to the punch(or drop, i guess). but gillion had still killed a man, and this certainly wasn't his first time doing so.
and immediately after THAT, both chip and gillion wanted to take kuba kenta as a prisoner. they even tried to convince jay to let them when kira gave them an out to leave if they had just left him. jay had to step away and tell kira just to take him.
and once all of that was said and done, this person who was once a close friend and had agreed to let jay go (not once but TWICE) looked her in the eyes and asked why she was on their side. the side of the riptide pirates.
and for that moment, jay couldn't think of an answer.
but once she got back on that boat, a million answers hit her in a flash. she watched as ollie's eyes lit up as he slowly turned the wheel of the ship, she watched the proud expression on alphonze's face as he guided him through it, she watched earl smack gryffon over the head with his cane for making a mistake while they cooked, she watched queen absentmindedly humming while plucking strings on their guitar, she watched chip excitedly take roofus aside for their drinks, and when she felt that presence walk up behind her, she felt a pang of guilt.
these people were her family. maybe far more of a better one than (most of) her blood family ever was. and she doubted them. she felt guilty for ever even considering the possibility that this wasn't the choice she should have made.
but she thought for a second about what drey had told her. on the midnight rose, crew members had squabbles all the time. hell, her own crew had plenty of them as well. and she knew that just like all the other fights they had, this would pass.
and if it ever comes down to it, if the morality of the riptide pirates starts to gray a bit more, jay knows that she can just whip them back into shape. or just challenge them to a duel. it's definitely her turn anyway.
and as gillion pats her on the shoulder as he leaves, jay decides once more, even if only she is there to know, that she is (and hopes to forever be) a riptide pirate.
and so she leaves gillion to his horrible horrible nightmare ridden sleep, and she leaves chip to catch up with his old friend.
but those two dumbasses are DEFINITELY getting an earful tomorrow.

and michael's too busy to deal with gender.
nate and mike were from ms afton's previous marriage, which is why william has a bias against them. elizabeth was adopted after they married.

This IF has been living in my head rent-free, so excuse the ramble. I can't get over the fact that there's no "happy" RO. Like, you've got Ash, who's dead before the game even starts. Aurel, who it is impossible to have a long-term relationship with, given that either they, MC, or both will die. And Creon who despite the fact you can actually be with them post Games is still a red flag of a person, and whose biggest goal is to be a part of the very same government that sends MC to their probable death. And I find this really emblematic of what I think this game's "role" is in the grander universe of the series. If Songbirds and Snakes is the cementation of a dystopia, and the trilogy is the rebellion that ends it. Then this story is perfectly situated to be the tragedy in between.
i honestly don't know how to respond to this other than saying im glad that my jumble mess of thoughts and characters actually do make sense, and people are enjoying and thinking about them too. When i decided to write a story set in this world, i really wanted to get a sense of hopelessness across. Both Katniss and Snows' stories mark both the end of an age and the start of a new one, but we never really get to see what it was like in between that time. Embers of Hope isn't the origin story of a villain or a tale of revolution. It's a story that has been experienced every year for 74 years. The games may be different this year, but the pain and the fight that Mc has to go through isn't special. Mc themselves are not special. The same way Katniss was not special. She just happened to do something that set everything into motion. Maybe if Mc was born later in life, they would've been the one sparking a revolution, but they're not. They're another child forced to go to the extreme just to survive, and at the end of the day, they will be forgotten along with the rest of the tributes. We, as readers, know that the victor for the first Quarter Quell is not alive when the 75th game happens. So even if Mc does win, the chances of them ever getting to live a fulfilling life still aren't a hundred percent. And honestly, I'm happy about that. It means that the dread and fear are still there, that even winning can't protect Mc from whats the come. Im rambling, and i dont know if half of this makes any sense, so im going to stop, but thank you sm for sending me your thoughts i really do like to hear what everyone is thinking <3
