Yuuri Katsuki: the importance of being earnest
There’s a reason that trying to write “fan ascending” is an extremely hard trope to get right, because so often the ‘ordinary Marty Stu’ pairing with the superstar has this air of author wish fulfillment to it that can ring a little bit false.
It’s also why Yuri!!! on Ice is brilliant, because it nailed the fan ascending trope. How did it do this? In a couple of ways.
First and foremost, Yuuri Katsuki is not an ordinary fan. He’s an unreliable narrator who is a Japanese superstar without the ability to see that about himself. He has every bit the ability of Victor Nikiforov, just with much more of it stored up in his potential rather than results and blocked by his anxiety.
That though is not why Victor fell for him. And not why it felt so damn real to see Victor fall for him. Because Yuuri’s power was in who he was inside, and how he dealt with/handled Victor Nikiforov becoming his coach, and importantly, the massive difference between how Victor predicted this arrangement was going to go, and how it actually went.
Victor remembers the drunk and moony Yuuri begging him at the banquet, and then skating Stammi Vicino. In Victor’s “always be camera ready” existence, he probably saw the Stammi Vicino skate as a brilliant marketing strategy, Yuuri making clear he was serious and asking again. And Victor, who was burned out and needed something new probably laughed and said “he got me.”
But… as we know, Stammi Vicino was not about luring Victor to Hasetsu. It was a genuine Yuuri trying to find the things that could bring his love for skating back. It wasn’t meant to be a public call to Victor at all, and so when Victor came and expected cameras and social media and look at me Victor is my coach! He got… something so entirely different.
He got a front-row seat to what it looks like when an entire hometown has adopted their local skater as a collective son.
He got a front-row seat to a family who loved their son and supported him no matter what.
He got a front-row seat to what happens when sincere hard work and friends who care about the person not the persona band together to help someone reach their potential.
He got I want to eat katsudon with you if I win, instead of I want you to declare to the world that you are my coach.
And for Victor, I think this was a shock.
Yuuri didn’t even fathom the idea of telling the whole world that Victor was coaching him (which we watch Victor decide to do).
Yuuri worried about how he was going to afford Victor’s coaching fees, as if Victor really truly was a celebrity coach, instead of a skater looking for a new way to be inspired.
One scene I have always adored is Victor complaining to Yuuri about coach seats being cramped on the way to Beijing. We know that Victor would easily have flown them both in First Class and not thought anything of it. It means that Yuuri was insistent that he pay for himself and his coach to fly to Beijing. I’ve no doubt he also insisted on paying for both his and Victor’s hotel rooms.
It’s also why the purchase of those rings is so profound. Because Victor knows that Yuuri budgets carefully. Yuuri bought those expensive rings for himself and his rich boyfriend, needing to pay them off in installments, without so much as glancing back at said rich boyfriend about finances. Victor recognized the profundity of the gesture.
And to Victor? Here was a person who made it so plain that he had no intention of ever taking advantage of him. Yuuri’s entire desire with Victor was for Victor just to be himself. Yuuri didn’t need a “oh look Victor is my coach look everyone.” He was over the moon that his idol was there teaching him. He didn’t want a fake kiss and relationship, he wanted a Victor who freaked out when he screwed up.
It meant that Victor who do you want me to be to you? Nikiforov’s mask slowly eroded away. And he found that Yuuri relished in the real Victor. And that it felt good being the real Victor.
All because Yuuri just wanted to eat katsudon with him when he won, insisted on paying both his and Victor’s way when it mattered.
Yuuri wanted Victor, and only Victor. The real one. And in every action, every decision, that Yuuri made, he reminded Victor of that.
It’s a master class to people attempting to write ‘the fan and the idol’ stories. Yuuri wanted Victor the person, not Victor the persona. And in every action, he reinforced that for Victor.
No wonder Victor fell so hard.

Rohan Kishibe is nothing if not dedicated. With tunnel visioned focus he has led Pink Dark Boy into fame. And he plans to achieve the same success with his most recent endeavor. The only obstacle that stands in his path happens to be the fact that he absolutely cannot reveal his plans to you. Using your cluelessness to his advantage, he’s devised the most perfect plan to surprise you when time comes. You, the object of his affection, deserve as much attention to detail as his finest artworks, after all.
It starts with a visit to the jewelers. But not just any jewelers, Rohan finds himself at the entrance of a branded store in Tokyo. The trip wasn’t very difficult to conceal as he had to travel for work every now and then. Despite that, he didn’t enjoy having to lie to his most beloved to justify his absence.
“I’ve a trip down in Tokyo,” he’d said early in the morning when you two usually share fusion breakfast. “It’s for some research. Pink Dark Boy is entering a new and important arc.” He said it so decisively with a sip of his miso soup that you didn’t think twice to question the validity of the statement.
Rohan soothed his conscience with the thought of knowing he didn’t truly lie to you as his remark about research was true. The only research he would need to do were of the jewel’s cuts, materials, and strength. The arc in question happened to be because of a heist being conducted by the characters in his manga. It’s most definitely not because any characters are getting married…
Scoffing to himself, Rohan walks through the store with the haughtiness of an experienced japanese idol, adorning a pair of shades that perfectly coordinate with his fashion for the day. Striding in sleek pants, he stands next to a display of rings and necklaces. With such an exclusive line of gems, the brand requires a special appointment just for customers to be able to browse through or purchase any of their items. It’s not surprising for Rohan when he notices the place is all but deserted save for himself.
The clerk greets him to which he replies before inquiring about his interest in the items. Staying true to his words to you, Rohan throws a flurry of questions at the poor clerk, trying to learn everything there is to know about diamonds, emeralds, rubies, their formations, types, malleability, and durability.
“I would like to see some engagement rings as well,” he adds after examining a deep red ruby necklace. It would be the perfect addition to Pink Dark Boy’s heist arc. Mentally sighing with relief, the clerk perks up at the question.
“Of course, we have some exclusive new cuts here…”
As he listens to the explanation from the storekeeper, Rohan’s mind conjures images of you. Which ring would be best representative of your beauty, your wit, and your warmth? Finding diamonds a common and boring choice among gems, a particularly glowing opal catches his eye. It’s not large to the point of gaudiness and yet not small enough to go unnoticed. You would truly shine with this ring on your finger… The thought brings an uncharacteristic redness to his cheeks as he realizes the meaning. Fighting his own reflexes to keep his composure, Rohan confirms the purchase. You will be tied to him soon, he thinks…
“We have a reservation next week,” Rohan tells you, the buzzing of his nerves is secondary to his need for perfection in planning his proposal. Which includes the fact that you must not suspect anything. “So I’ve prepared something for you to wear…”
Curiously, you gaze over to Rohan’s nonchalant demeanor. It’s not uncommon for him to announce reservations to you ahead of time given his busy schedule and his respect for yours. But Rohan is always sure you will be free. As if he took a look into your agenda somewhat obsessively. You wouldn’t exactly put it past him to do something like that.
“What is it?” You perk up at the sound of an impromptu gift. Motioning you to your shared bedroom, Rohan brings out a finely packaged article of clothing. It’s gorgeous. Smooth satin caresses your fingers as you touch the fabric after opening the expensive looking box.
“Rohan…” You whisper, still not looking at him directly. From the perfect color to the perfect size, you are most certain that Rohan has spared no detail or work to make sure it’s just right for you. Taking your style into account is as easy to him as his own, being a man of fashion that he is. “It’s…” You’re clearly speechless as you turn to his smug expression.
“I know,” he says. Wriggling his hand over your waist, he pulls you closer. “You like it, yes? I had a feeling.”
Despite the ring not being in his grasp, now hidden in some deep confine where you will not find it, Rohan’s through gravitate towards the accessory. Believing in perfectionism the way he does, it bleeds into every aspect of his life. Including his marriage proposal to be. Rohan’s hand squeezes an intimate part of your waist as he imagines the color of the stone with your outfit, perfect harmony.
He’s aware of your deep love for art, a complete reflection of his own affections, and he lets it color his choice for the engagement ring clearly. Subtle but not ordinary, to him it’s a perfect masterpiece made for your hand.
“Why?” You ask, shattering through his thoughts for a moment. “What’s so special about this occasion?”
Rohan must not let himself break a single sweat gland in front of you. “It’s an expensive restaurant we’re going to. You’d look like a baboon going underdressed. And you’re much too beautiful to be a baboon,” he smirks proudly at his own joke when you raise an eyebrow. “It’s for Pink Dark Boy,” he says, turning away from you to one of the shelves in your shared bedroom. “There’s a particularly distasteful meal I must try for this new arc. It’s important.”
With his decisive tone, he turns to you, hoping it answers your question and doesn’t cause you to pry further.
“...Oh!” None the wiser, you take his word for it. “Well that sounds… gratifying?” You’re both confused and excited. There’s nothing like research for Pink Dark Boy that isn’t exciting. “Tell me what I can do to help, should I taste it too?”
Rohan puts a hand up to your face. “There’s no need.” The smugness returns to his face. “You just have to sit there and be the second most beautiful and exquisite guest of honor the restaurant has seen — after me of course.”
With that, he departs your shared quarters and you are left to wonder if he was being utterly flattering or calling you useless. In his own way, perhaps, it was Rohan’s display of affection. Despite his words, you know your boyfriend does not consider you second to himself even if he must declare it for his own ego. And being his partner, you only chuckle at his response knowing no true malice behind his words.
Feeling exquisite in the fabric that Rohan gifted you the week before, and even adding a touch of makeup, you’re somewhat dumbfounded when you meet the humbled entrance of the supposed expensive dining place. With an evening breeze grazing your cheeks and making you feel like a million dollars, you strut as confidently as your partner, containing your shyness to the best of your abilities.
The exterior of the restaurant is much more deceiving than you realized when you walk into the extravagance of the interior. It’s absolutely like Rohan to book a restaurant so lavish for his research, you think. How peculiar will his distasteful meal be?
Checked into your reservation perfectly on time, the host leads you both deeper into the establishment. Striding next to your partner you notice the restaurant has small compartments for completely private dining settings. To your knowledge it’s common for businessmen and corporate dinners. Intrigued, you wonder if Rohan was ever brought to a place like this for a meal with his agent or editor. His attire does appear to be an elegant mix of business and pleasure alike.
“Here you are,” the suited host says, bowing at the entrance to your private compartment, fitted with a sitting pillow and a low table as is common in many expensive restaurants in Japan. Once you’re settled on your pillows opposite one another, the host leaves you two with a menu and asks for your choice of drinks.
“I didn’t pin you one for tradition,” you quip at your partner while browsing the list of dishes. Thank God for the translations in small text or you would have to ask your boyfriend for help. Not that he would mind it, but you wouldn’t want to interrupt Rohan’s careful scrutiny of the paper in front of him.
You hear the smirk in his voice before you see it. “And why not? Embracing tradition is hardly condemning the contemporary or the other way around. Besides,” he takes a beat to turn to the list of both international and local alcoholic beverages, “Pink Dark Boy requires far too much attention to detail.”
You don’t disagree with him as you ask about the arc’s details and how he plans to portray the restaurant experience. “That,” he lilts in airily, “is confidential~” He declares with a self-assured grin. “I doubt Kyoka would appreciate anything leaking.”
Remembering a similar conversation about the manga and how meticulous his editor truly is, you nod, dropping the subject entirely much to Rohan’s relief. While the restaurant is something he would like to research for the arc, it’s an idea he’s not sure his editor would actually like. It makes him unsure of whether he’d truly use the knowledge for the manga after all.
As you move onto discussing your orders, Rohan finally mentions the uncommon meal he wants to try. He’d heard of this dish not long ago and it would be lying to say it didn't intrigue him past it being for research.
“It’s a dish made of locusts and fish sperm,” he confesses. You’re not sure what to say, staring at him with admiration and shock alike.
“What do the reviews say about it?” You ask, knowing he must have made a thorough search of its history.
“It’s highly praised by food critics for the flavor. But…” He says with a determined look. “I, the great Kishibe Rohan, will be the judge of that.”
Amused by his theatrics and thoroughly entertained at the thought of your boyfriend nearly throwing up from eating something unusual, you grin at him. You can hardly wait until the dishes arrive, where you ordered an esteemed entree of sushi paired with a delectably expensive beverage, Rohan’s dish… stands out like a sore thumb.
“This is delicious,” you comment after taking one of the hand rolled pieces. It’s truly worth the money as you know how fast food sushi tastes in comparison. Looking up to see Rohan examining his dish with hard eyes. White, gooey substance and fried bugs adorn his cutlery and you’re not sure whether to look or not when he finally takes a bite.
As you know, your boyfriend is nothing if not professional, fighting his body to keep himself from making a dissatisfied expression and hardening himself to the effects of the dish. Admiring his determination, you still have to keep yourself from snickering at his crazed eyes and heaving breaths.
“Are you alright?” You say between hidden giggles.
“Of course I am!” He tries to say, his chopsticks rattling in unison. Rohan wipes his mouth with a complementary napkin and feeds himself some ginger to cleanse his palette. You see him release a collected breath before going into an in depth review of his dish.
No detail of description is left out as he lets you know his candid thoughts about what he just consumed. You’re hauled into a sudden discussion about the facts he knows about insects and fish sperm and Rohan, at the cusp of launching the big question, thinks of why it’s one of the reasons he loves you. The way he could talk about his research in depth without being met with utter disgust or dismissal makes him feel far more intellectually stimulated than he could have hoped.
The two of you share a few laughs between bites and you watch Rohan unravel his professionalism in the private chambers of the restaurant. It’s intimate and far from prying eyes, knowing he wouldn’t be one for PDA. It’s usually you who initiates any physicality amongst both of you. So you are surprised to feel his hand on your in the middle of the meal.
He calls your name with a tone you would have not expected from him in a semi-public setting.
“You’ve been my faithful partner for an adequate amount of time. It is no mere feat to be so exemplary and extraordinary a human. And I say that with high regard to someone outside of myself.” He smirks. “So I want you to…”
Rohan takes a deep breath trailing from his words. It’s completely unlike him and you’re mesmerized at the way his eyes shift and a redness takes a hold of him. Accompanied by the dim yellow light of your booth and the buzzing in your blood from the alcohol, it’s a combination so addicting, you smile at him with warmth and patience.
“I want you to understand your importance in my life. This dinner.. While useful for my knowledge has not been just for research. It’s been for the both of us. But especially for you, who deserves a celebration… even more than me. Because, I want you to be my spouse. Please, marry me.”
The rods are formal and Rohan even bows on his side of the table as he pleads his request.
“Oh…” the tears come before you can stop them. You cover your mouth in a helpless feature to stop yourself from crying and from shock. “Yes!” You try not to shout your answer when he lifts his head in a steely but moved gaze.
Watching him produce a box from almost thin air, you wait for him to take your hand as he adorns you with a beautifully intricate gold ring. The opal at the epicenter shines with colorful mirth, bestowing a promise of a happy marriage.
“It’s perfect isn’t it?” Rohan asks. “It’s art… just like you.”
His comment, though under his breath, doesn’t miss your ears and beam at him. Out of all the bold dishes you both have during the night, the kiss you share is far bolder.
“I hope I didn’t taste any of those locusts,” you whisper against his mouth, knowing he won’t be intimate for much longer as the high from your proposal diminishes.
“You dare question Kishibe Rohan?” He says, smiling into another kiss.

Andrew sat on the edge of your shared bed, staring at the wall. His hands were fisted in his lap, his face solemn.
“Is that really what she said?” He whispered to his wife.
“It is, Andy. But…but it’s because she doesn’t fully understand.”
“I scared my baby.” He mutters as if he hadn’t heard you. “My little Katrina. I scared both my babies.”
The look on your man’s face was breaking your heart.
“Are they…” He could barely get the words out. “Are they afraid of me now, Y/N? Is that why they didn’t want me to tuck them in tonight?”
He had known something was wrong when his girls had said that they only wanted Mommy. They always wanted him to tuck them in too. Usually.

Your husband slams his fist on on the bed.
“Tell me how to fix this, Y/N. I can’t have my girls afraid of me.” His voice wavers just the tiniest bit.
“Andrew, none of us are afraid of you. But I think we need to sit down and have a conversation about what happened. Our girls are smart, and just like you, they are unbelievably perceptive.” You run your fingers through his hair, lightly scratching his scalp as you do. You had found early on that this was something that seemed to soothe him.
“I know they’re young, but I think it’s time we start talking to them about, well, being black. Right now we’re in an environment where we as Mom and Dad can control the conversation. Let’s take advantage of that.”
“Will you help me?” Andy whispers, his soulful blue eyes meet yours.
“We’re going to do this together. You and me, baby. We’re partners, remember?”
He nods again, before grabbing your hand and pressing a kiss to your open palm.
“I love you, Y/N.”
“And I love you right back.”
You sit there for a while, snuggling together without saying a word. Sometimes, this was love.

Everyone good with that?” You allow a brief pause for any potential naysayers. “Okay then, let’s start. Bianca and Katrina, do you wanna tell Daddy abut how what happened that day made you feel?”
Both girls glance at their father and then look away.
“Scared.” KitCat mumbles while she plays with her fingers.
“Never seen Daddy so angry.” BiBi adds.
You reach over to squeeze Andy’s hand. “It’s okay, honey. It’s all okay.” You murmur in his ear.
“Did that scare you too, Bianca?”
She nods.
“I think Daddy wants to try to explain why he was so angry with that man. Go on, honey.”
Andy clears his throat before taking a deep breath. “First of all, girls, I just want to say that Daddy loves you more than anything and I’m so sorry that I, um…that I scared you. I lost my temper and that’s not okay.”
You can tell your man is trying his best to keep his voice steady.
“That man that I…hurt in the park used to be a friend of Daddy’s from a long time ago, but I’m starting to learn that not all of my friends are actually nice people. He said some not so nice things about you two, and your Mama, and I kind of snapped. Because you three are the most precious people in the world to me. And I just…God.”
Your Big Man sniffles just a little, which prompts you to lean your head on his shoulder.
“Sometimes I wish I could just, I don’t know, wrap you three in bubble wrap so nothing could ever hurt you. That way I could keep you safe all the time.”
“Why he say dah mean stuff?” Your KitCat asks.
“Cuz’ we brown, Sissy. And Daddy not.” Your older daughter responds, surprising both you and Andy. She shrugs combs her curls out of her eyes. “Sometimes people at school used tah think you not my Daddy. Cuz’ you white and I not.”
“Why didn’t you tell us that before, sweetheart?” You ask her.
“Cuz’ they dumb.” She shrugs again.
“Daddy. You sad dat we brown like Mama?” Katrina mumbles out the question.
“No! Absolutely not Katrina!” Your husband all but yells in effort to reassure both of his daughters. “Your Mama is the most beautiful woman on the face of this earth. And to be blessed with two special girls who look just like her…it’s an absolute gift!” He takes a shaky hand through his already messy brown locks.
“Can I say something here?” You gently interject. “What your Daddy struggles with sometimes, and frankly I do too, is how to handle certain situations with, as Bianca said, dumb people. It’s really tough sometimes, girls. Especially when you’re a Mama or a Daddy. You don’t like it when mean people say bad stuff about the people you love. Does that make sense?”
“Um, yeah.”
“Uh huh.”
“Your Daddy is very protective of all of us. And I am too, but his way of protecting us is sometimes a little different than mine. But trust me when I say that he’s not the only one with a temper. Your Mama has one too.”
Andy smiles it that, knowing that his wife was telling the truth. His girl didn’t necessarily need big muscles to flex on people. She could slice and dice folks with her words all day long. And then skip away without a care in the world as they lay bleeding out on the floor.
“Your Daddy has stood up for me so many times when we’ve dealt with…dumb people. And I’ve stuck up for him too. Because we love each other. And we’re family. And that’s what we do. But family also has to be honest with one another, so can we be honest with you two for a moment?”
Bianca leans over to grab her little sister’s hand. “Go head, Mama.”
“Andy…” You tilt your head, gesturing for him to take over.
“Girls, there are going to be some people out there as you grow up who are going to see you as different. Or maybe not like you because of your skin color and -“
“Cuz’ we ugly?” KitCat whispers, horrified.
“No. Cuz’ we brown, Sissy. Some no like dah brown.” She points at her own arm. “They think we bad.”
“But we no do nuffin’ to ‘em!” Your other daughter wails. “Is no fair!”
“You’re right. It’s not.” Your husband agrees. “It’s absolutely not. And it’s really, really frustrating for Daddy when he hears that kind of stuff. Because sometimes people tell me mean things about people with beautiful skin like yours, thinking that I’m going to agree with them. And I don’t.”
“So Daddy get mad.” His younger daughter surmises.
“Exactly.” Andy agrees.
“Bianca, my little love, other than people not thinking that your Daddy is, well, not your Daddy. Has anything else ever happened that you maybe haven’t shared with us?”
Your heart might’ve been stuck in your throat as you asked the question, but it needed to be asked regardless. This was what the heart of parenting was about The tough shit.
“Umm, well...” Bianca sighs before letting go of her sister’s hand and inching over to settle into her father’s lap.
“It’s okay, Sweetheart. You can tell us.” Andy murmurs, pressing a soft kiss into her curly hair.
“Come here, Katrina.” You open your arms as your baby girl rushes forward to wrap her own around your neck.
“Well, a few weeks ago, umm...” She snuggles deeper into Andy’s chest. “Billy Mason call me a - a nigger. And I no like that. I tol’ Mrs. Robertson but she no believe me. So when no one lookin’, I push him off dah slide and shove dirt in his face.”
You and your husband sit there feeling stunned, him moreso than you.
“Mrs. Roberston didn’t believe you?” He asks.
“Nuh uh.”
“BiBi. Why didn’t you say anything before now?” You ask her, recalling that you’d dealt with that boy and his parents before, back when he used to pinch Bianca. Your blood was boiling but you forced yourself to take a deep breath and offer what you hoped seemed like a smile.
“Cuz’ you tol’ me long time ago it was a ugly word. And Daddy tell me I pretty all dah time. So I is too pretty to be ugly.” She smiles up at Andy, who practically melts.
“Yes you are, pretty baby.” Your husband mumbles.
“Well, we’re going to talk with your teacher about that, okay? How about you, Katrina?”
“I fine, Mama. Only, a boy tol’ me I was cute and stole my chicken nuggies. So I flick him in dah eye.” She shrugs.
“That’s my girl.” Andy mutters under his breath, oblivious to your glare.
“Okay, well, um, we’ll follow up on that too, little KitCat. Anything else you girls want to share or talk about?”
Both of your babies think for a moment before shaking their heads “no”.
Andy clears his throat once again. “Well, my beauties, your Mama and I are always here. And we’re going to keep having meetings like this okay. If something happens you come talk to us and we’ll work it out as a family, because that’s what we do.”
“Cuz we wuv us!” KitCat squeals.
“That’s right!” You giggle.
“Love you, Mama. Love you Daddy.” BiBi whispers. And then she reaches up to stroke Andy’s chin. “We never scared of you Daddy. You dah best Daddy in dah world.” She kisses his cheek and then grabs her sister’s hand.
“C’mon, KitCat. I’ma show you how to play Go Fish.” And then they were off and running, leaving you and Andy to sit there on the floor, practically motionless.
“Well, I think that went...okay.” You offer eventually.
“No. That Billy kid called our daughter a fucking nig-”
“I know, honey.” You already knew where this was going.
“Well then what is the point of sending them to the best schools possible if they’re still going to encounter this shit? Huh? Explain it to me!” He’s on his feet and breathing hard.
“Come sit back down, Andy.” You tell him as he begins to pace. “Come sit down, baby.”
“No! We pay top dollar and -”
“STOP!” Your husband pauses midstep. “Sit. Down.” He finally does as you ask.
“Look at me, Big Man. Look at me, Andrew.” You cup his face in your hands. “Do you see me?” He nods. “Good. Do you hear me?” He nods again. “Good.”
“This kind of shit is unavoidable. No matter where we send them, no matter how much we pay, no matter how much we try to shelter them, this is life. I get that you want to put us in fucking bubblewrap and I admire you for that because, frankly, I’ve always felt the same about you. But this is life, Andrew. You and I are the parents of two little magical black girls. Ignorance is everywhere. This is not the first time or last time that our girls will deal with this.”
You take his hand in your own. “You and I have dealt with it for years. I know it breaks your heart, baby. Honestly, I’d be concerned if it didn’t. I would fucking divorce you so quick if it didn’t. But it’s up to you and I to handle this until they are old enough and wise enough to tackle it on their own. Okay?”
He nods.
“So we can’t pull them out of school?”
“I’m afraid not, Big Man.”
“And I can’t shake this Billy kid until something rattles?”
“Nope. Authorities frown upon that, unfortunately.”
“And I can’t punch his Dad in the face and force him to eat mulch..?”
A slightly demented smile graces your features. “Well, I wouldn’t say that. Perhaps he and his wife Susie, Shelly, or Sarah whatever her name wss are now on an all vegan diet. Who’s to say?” You peck his lips. Once, twice.
“You did good, baby. I’m proud of us.” You tell him.
I’m proud of us too.”

A headcanon I have for him, that I always say no matter what, is that he loves to dance - and he's quite good at it too; always impresses people at Hero Galas with how precise and smooth his movements are, no matter the song. But, his favorite dance is when he's alone with you, pulling you away from whatever it is you're doing into a slow, soft, sway as he hums a ballad. It's corny, but cute and endearing, and it always ends with him gently dipping you before giving you a kiss
Another is that, he loves to match in terms of the small things; like accessories or nail colour. Always choosing to paint his nails in a colour that matches as closely to yours as possible (or his usual black, but his ring fingers are the same as your nails). And because I don't/can't wear earrings he uses that to his advantage when buying accessory sets (the good, expensive kinds) so he can wear the earrings and I can wear the matching bracelets or necklaces. - usually subtle but he loves knowing that a part of him is with you and vice versa.
At least once a week he will try and do the Spiderman kiss - wanting to recreate something he's been obsessed with as a child. At first, he's constantly rejected in doing that, being pushed aside each time with a playful eye roll. The day I finally give in though? i find he asks even more.
Bokuto Koutaro
This man always has to be touching his partner in some way, she, or form. Not in a possessive way of course, but rather he just gets so overwhelmed and loves knowing you are right there. Sometimes it helps when he's anxious, but he mainly does it because he is so excited to have his partner there with him that he can't believe its true; so he holds their hand, wraps his arm around their waist, something to prove that they are.
Man loves to match as well - but in terms of jerseys. This man will give me (you) unreleased jerseys/MSBY/Team Japan merch with his number on it for you to wear at games because he loves knowing you're out there with his number on. EXTRA loves it if you just wearing around the house or (especially) when you go out. You never have to steal his hoodies, he's practically throwing them at you.
Man wants to get married within the first few months of the relationship - and will express this sentiment when he asks to marry me (you) when you first move in. And will continue to ask every other month after being politely rejected due to the length of the relationship - not in a disrespectful way, more in a 'he knows you're the one and wants to call you his wife/husband ASAP'
Absolutely has stars in his eyes, and goes hyper-mode happy, when I do the bit where I introduce him to new people as my husband/order food for him and say 'and my husband will have...' will gush and vibrate with excitement as he agrees and calls me his wife - a few days after it happens a ring and proper proposal will appear.

So I started GMing a new Pathfinder 2e campaign last night and I figured I'd put a synopsis and other fun stuff here. We spent about the first hour struggling with our Forge VTT(the product is great, I'm just a noobie with it so it took a few tries to get things right) The map above is made in Inkarnate btw, another product I highly recommend for GMs or someone doing world building.
For starters the world is a nameless one that I honestly just refer to as the Continent right now for lack of a better term. I have about 300 pages of google docs and maps built out for this world that I started creating over quarantine in 2020. The name of this campaign arc is titled "Frost Barley" because of a tough strain of crops that has been developed here in the north of the Blodrake Kingdom(1/3 of the powers in the land). This new influx of money and capital to the area has also caused an influx of raiders, bandits, and others looking to take advantage. The party arrived in the town of Winterrane Plains(above), and were introduced to the Frostbreath Outriders(Think part knights watch, part mercenary company, part riders of Rohan) and drafted into their Auxiliary.
The party is as follows; the first to arrive was Arric, an Strix Gunslinger riding a horse sized chicken with twin pistols on his hips. The next to arrive was Steve, a mage covered head to toe in wrapped bandages and with a strong desire towards gold and other precious metals. The next to arrive was Derron Kewn Tanunuv(points to anyone who can figure out the name) who is "half orc and half badass from the town of Gold's Gym" a monk who put all his skill points into the lore:war skill but is still pretty handy with his orcish knuckle daggers. Next to arrive was Dyaven, a human magus with a combination gun-sword, a trenchcoat, and a bad attitude. Finally it was Najela Chestertail's turn to arrive, she was wearing a blue sailors coat and wielding a long curved sword covered in rings that made quite the racket.
After meeting the lord of the Outriders and eating a simple dinner, the members of squad 20 headed to Peter's Shop in the main square of town and purchased some winter clothing so that they were better equipped to deal with the punishing conditions of the winter. The mission they had received was to head to Underlake Farm and make sure the Underlake family was alright and didn't need for anything.
The session ended with the squad about to head into the Slumbering Den, the only bar and inn in the town to grab a drink.
We'll see what the next session will bring, but as a seasoned GM I know to always have stats for a bar fight prepared.

ok so games i've played and enjoyed this year summerised! will literally be some short thoughts I'll really try to keep it brief since there is a lot lol (it's not going to be refined)
13 sentinels: dang i still need to finish this one - anyway if you played vanillaware before you'll probably know general things to expect. The story structure tbh reminds a lot of odin sphere but a hell of a lot more fluid within itself and your mileage may vary depending on how you like your sci fi stories (i really enjoy the unfloding of the mystery). Crazy good narrative design considering the 13 protags but pretty ok tactics combat. Hidden gem if anything
elden ring: Do i really need to talk about this one? It's great. Does some good stuff with the open world i enjoy (i usually do not click with open world well) was very fun to play a fromsoft game at launch completely blind if anything. Will never finish it as per usual with these types of games lol. Certainly not for everyone
ffxiv: have you heard of the critically acclaimed mmorpg- yeah anyway i really am not going go on anymore about this one since i liveblogged a lot of it but i've roped 3 other people into playing it over the last year so. I have no clue how it compaires to other mmos of its ilk.
signalis: AWOOOOOOOOOOGA. Seriously worth playing, especially if you want to try getting into surivival horror games or want to give them a go - feels old school but refined. Limitations work to it's advantage and it never feels reductive or derivative of its inspirations. The whole combine into something so unique and lasting.
Lunacid:Currently in early access - I tend to play this in short chunks wth large spanses of breaks inbetween - really fun to return to. Inspired by king's field and shadow tower but enough of it's own thing to feel great to play without prior knowledge of those two. Great atomsphere and i cannot understate how much i adore it.
unsighted: apparently i started playing this earlier last year but had a lot of on i forgot (and haven't finished it yet but want to) - don't let that sound like i didn't enjoy it though. The limited time mechanic is fantastic and well worth keeping on (i wouldn't call it punishing or anything of the sort, it feels more like it creates a soft goal-point for the player). Fantastic locomotive feel and combat is suuuuuuuper satisfying.
xanadu next: very old kinda clunky dungeon crawler (in terms of combat, less so in exploration). Oddly a cozy game for me. Really enjoy that loot is controlled by the order you kill enemies in a room in + keys can be carved from monster bones which is pretty cool (instead of buying them from the store, in which they go up in price per purchase).
halo 1: pretty good! i can understand it's influence but everytime i play it i think of all the boys in high school that talked about it lmaooo (last couple of levels feel pretty crunched so come across as weirdly hard)
Dmc trilogy: pretty good! despite my struggles with it, i still think the 1st one is my favourite to play. Really satisfying combat when it clicks on how to combat an enemy and very effortless at making you feel stylish while doing so
legend of heroes: trails in the sky: i need to return to this one - maybe fell off it because there was some casual, period typical (of the time of release) biphobia going on with some characters that made me feel very :/ but overall experience has been really great otherwise. Also kinda got cozy vibes depsite that
ultrakill: it hurt my hands real good (not a fun time in that regards)
in the drink: short fantastic underwater controls, super straightforward and very charming

I’ve spent hundreds of dollars on Sonic Unleashed at this point
*The following is a culmination of playthroughs from 2008 to 2023
When I first played Sonic Unleashed, I didn’t know there was a major difference between the console ports. I didn’t have a Playstation 3 or Xbox 360 at the time so I bought it for the Nintendo Wii. I knew that this was the game where Sonic ran faster than he’s ever ran before, and when I started playing it, that fact was true (unless you’re a freak and used Speed Break in Sonic and the Secret Rings). Sonic does run extremely fast in both versions so nothing seemed awry. I played it, had a great time, but only afterwards did I realize something was off. The level I saw in the first trailer of the game was nowhere to be found in my playthrough. I did some digging and learned that the Wii/PlayStation 2 version wasn’t just a sacrifice in graphics, but an entirely different game created by Dimps, the developers of the portable Sonic the Hedgehog games. I was interested to know what I was missing, so years later, I bought the game again, this time for the Playstation 3 that I at last owned.
This High Definition version of Unleashed developed by Sonic Team themselves was somewhat disappointing. I heard from everyone that it was the superior game, but it just wasn’t hitting the same. I thought it was bias. I truly thought that because Sonic UnWiished was the first version I played, that I was always going to prefer it. That was my theory anyway. But we are now ten years removed from the first time I played Sonic UnleasHD. I have forgotten so much about both games that they are as fresh in my mind as they are ever going to be. I literally purchased an Xbox Series S, just so I can buy Sonic UnleasHD a second time under optimal conditions. And going in with the most charitable lens possible, I have uncovered the unassailable truth that the Standard Definition iteration of Sonic Unleashed is the best version of this mildly mediocre game. I hate to give Dimps any props as developers, as I still have not forgiven them for Sonic Lost World 3DS, but they truly out did Sonic Team here.
In terms of graphics and scale, UnWiished can't compete. Dimps had less time and storage space to make it, so the levels are smaller and there's less of them. The fidelity is on an entirely different level and 6th gen hardware shouldn't be allowed anywhere near that level of detail. Frankly neither should 7th gen hardware. The one technical advantage SD had over HD was a consistent frame rate due to it not trifling with powers beyond its comprehension. Sonic Unleashed barely did its job on the PS3. The frame rate would rarely do a full work day and would some times take Paid Time Off without any notice. Sonic Unleashed is a 9th gen game released a decade too early. But now that it's available on adequate hardware, there is no technical area the SD version can stand up in. HD is gorgeous and taking in that lush scenery at 60 FPS feels like a luxurious dream. Especially during the day stages.
I used to prefer the SD version when it came to the Day Time stages. But now I'm not too sure. In UnWiished, the Day Time stages were good because they valued resource management and perfection. Getting S Ranks adequately rewarded you and the game expects you to replay the levels to get better at them. There's a bigger emphasis on knowing the stages and understanding when and where you should be using your boost. Boosting in UnWiished is not a speed up button that you hold like in every other Sonic game with a boost mechanic. It is a button that effectively teleports you 100 feet forward while also giving you momentum. You are not in control when you press that button so you can't be using it willy nilly. This is why it's a limited resource that you can't spam. Giving that amount of power in these cramped stages is a recipe for disaster. You can tell there was a lot of thought put into the systems of the SD version.
But the HD version just has better levels. Or at least better Sonic levels. Sonic is a platformer and it feels like you are controlling a jumpy scrimblo character here, albeit a very fast one. There is open space and objects to jump on in UnleasHD. UnWiished doesn't really have that. You are not controlling Sonic. You are controlling a car that is shaped like Sonic. In HD, The freedom and control you are given along with the sheer spectacle provided leads to an overall better experience... Initially. Replaying levels is a different story. These levels are far longer and thus aren't as friendly towards mastery due to the ratio of how much time you spend on a run vs how easy it is to mess up that run. I have no motivation to get S ranks in this game because of this. The Dimps levels are feasible to master because you only lose 2-3 minutes if you fuck up. The Sonic Team levels have double that time frame usually, so it’s not as palatable due to how much time you are potentially wasting. Though it might even out a bit more now with the use of the Solid State Drive on modern Xbox consoles allowing for faster level restarts.
At a certain point I came to the conclusion that SD has better levels to master, while HD has better levels to experience casually. When you are running through a level in UnleasHD and you don't have to worry about rankings or medals(don't worry I'll get to that soon) they are the most fun you will have playing Sonic Unleashed. Empire City is the absolute peak between both games. It's the perfect length, there's wide enough platforms, the set pieces are thrilling but don't play themselves, there's a wide array of paths you can take. I replayed that level just because I liked it, no ulterior motive attached at all. The HD levels are intrinsically better. They extrinsically missed the mark compared to what Dimps ended up cooking though. The game is not structured in a way that pushes the player to enjoy it optimally. There's always something in the way. This goes for the whole game.
The handling of progression in UnleasHD is a gross display of self sabotage. It's meant to be a huge game, so the truly great parts of it are spread out and surrounded by medium effort filler. I just want to play levels in these games in a linear fashion, but Sonic Team has other plans. If you want to play UnleasHD, you need to partake in its world adventure aspects more intimately by exploring the hub cities. Hub Worlds aren't the worst thing in video games, I usually like them well enough. Just not in Sonic games. I have zero desire to explore a city as Sonic. It doesn't mesh well with the way the character moves. I didn't enjoy it in Sonic Adventure with Station Square and I didn't enjoy it in any of the 9 times they did it here. The SD version has you visit cities as well, but they take 1 minute of clicking to get through, as the whole of exploration is done through Visual Novel prompts. It's cheap as hell and not as impressive, but it saves time and doesn't break the pace of my adventure. In some cases, less is more, and one of these cases is also seen in the tornado sections. These flight mini games are an enemy of humanity and must be destroyed. They’re just a series of Quick Time Events. Instead of a potentially fun rail shooter, we get a flurry of nondiagetic disorienting button prompts. Stop asking me to press the ‘X’ button! How would I know where that is? It's different on every controller! Quick Time Events are pasted throughout the game as a replacement for actual content and they always suck. Dimps doesn’t have this weird fetish for QTEs. There are only a handful in UnWiished. There is also no tornado section to be found and it ends up being all the better for that.
All I wanted to do was play through these levels so I could compare them to the other version. But I kept getting ambushed by hub world shenanigans, bad mini games, and after I got through those I was turned back because I played the levels wrong. Medal hunting is the quite honestly the most baffling decision in this game. The game blocks you off from the next chunk of the game if you haven't collected enough medals in the stages. If this was Mario Odyssey I wouldn't mind. If this was Banjo Kazooie I wouldn't mind. Because those are games that are about collecting things. Sonic is not about combing the area in an attempt to find Skittles. This game certainly isn't because it's the game where you move the fastest. These medals are well hidden, you will not be able to spot them if you are blitzing through the stage like you are urged to do. So many times I blasted past a medal and then spent a minute trying to back track and get it to satisfy the medal quota. You WILL miss these things, you WILL replay these stages, and if you are as sane as me, you will NOT have fun. Instead of placing little collectibles for the curious sect of players who want to engage with Unleashed in this way, they take these bonuses and turn them into chores.
It's not just that it forces you to replay stages that's the problem, It's that it forces you to replay them in a woefully counter intuitive way. Nothing about how this game is put together suggest you should be slowing down to pick up trinkets, but they made it a requirement anyway so they could pad run time in the most obvious of ways. UnWiished has medals. But you don't find them. You earn them. The better your rank for a stage, the more medals you get. And if you don't have a lot, you aren't gated from the rest of the game. You only miss out on side puzzle rooms that hold bonus content and extra lives. It's the complete inverse. You aren't punished for playing the game in the intended way, you are rewarded for it.
The theme here is that while HD has more to offer, that more is rarely good. It offers more bad ideas, more padding, more progression gates, more pace breakers. SD doesn't have a lot to offer. So it has to be smarter to compensate. The structure of UnWiished is consistently intuitive and player friendly. Dimps is that weird nerd in school that you don't like talking to, but you know it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to be paired up with them because they will carry that group project. Sonic Team is conversely, a stereotypical jock. Few elegant things that come out of their mouth, but it's okay because they're hot. Both have short comings, and I don't think either are better than the other. Sometimes I'll prefer a jock over a nerd. Other times I won't. It all comes down to preference really.
If that sounds like it's too diplomatic and clean of a conclusion, that's because it is. There is another 60% of the game I haven't even touched on. It's time to talk about the big hog in the room. The real reason Unwiished still holds my favor. The Werehog.
Nobody liked the Werehog when these games came out. It was the major complaint everyone had. You could move so fast as Sonic during the day and it was exhilarating, but come nightfall, you're forced to play as the comparatively far more sluggish Werehog. And you play as the Werehog for most of the game. It became the default example of how hard Sonic had fallen off. And who could deny it at this point. The Werehog sucked. It was a shallow God of War clone used for blatant padding. Even me, a shameless Sonic shill, didn't like the Werehog. But something profound happened during the end of my first playthrough. I started to understand what they were getting at with this gameplay style.
The Werehog seemed like a nightmare when I first picked it up. The platforming was unreliable and the combat was punishing. I struggled far more than I thought I would. But then it all started to come together when I realized you can hold down the grab button with no consequence. Any pole or ledge that the game expected me to grab while I loomed over a bottomless chasm wasn't terrifying once I started holding down the grab button and removed timing from the equation. Once I had that safety net, I started getting far more reckless with my movement. I was progressing through the levels cautiously before, but with the threat of death lessened, I summoned enough gumption to start dash jumping over gaps and leaping from pole to pole. The secret of Sonic Unleashed is that the Werehog is slower than regular Sonic, but only actually slow if you're a pussy. This applies to enemy encounters too. I used to approach them slowly because the enemies hit hard. But once you get your combos and start using the objects around you, you do just as much damage. It's all about getting the first hit. The The brevity of these enemy encounters after you master the game is exactly what a Sonic action game should strive for. It's not mind blowing or anything, but it's good at being what it is. A simple 3D Beat Em Up Platformer. There aren't a ton of moves, but the ones you do have feel good to use and are easy to execute. There aren't a ton of level ideas, but each one is used to its fullest. As long as you are open to learning it's mechanics, the Werehog is a fun time with no reservation.
But for the HD version. It doesn't matter how much you learn about the mechanics, it still sucks ass.
Sonic Team’s Werehog is some doo-doo. It's like it's dedicated to making you feel as weak, slow, and cringe as possible. This feels so much worse to play, it’s staggering. First, the Werehog attack animations have zero weight behind them, despite all the wind up they have. It looks embarrassing. I bumped attack way up at first because of how little damage I was doing. After I gathered sufficient strength, I decided to invest exp into new moves. This was a bad idea. Every attack in this game is functionally the same and there are too little enemies for any variety to matter. The game gives you this big tool box and nothing to use it on. I ended up using the same attacks in the beginning of the game as the end, because there was no advantage to using the new move. Yea that new dash attack I got 80% into the game looks kinda decent, but it's so hard to control and does so little damage that there's no reason for me to touch it. This new attack does big Area of Effect damage, just like the other 5 attacks I have that I can pull off easier. It's not complex, it's convoluted. While I get people want to use a lot of moves in these game, there effectively still not a lot of moves here. And it doesn’t help that I dislike how flaccid the attack animations usually end up being.
Fights take soooooooooo fucking long and I felt like a loser the entire time I was playing. The idea is that you are supposed to handle enemies using the QTE prompts that take them out in one shot. If the QTE animations were snappy and clean and the inputs were intuitive, maybe that would work, but the reward never felt worth the risk. I get that it's hard to balance a level curve, but it's not just in combat where you feel profoundly lame. It takes like 5 hits to break down a wooden boarded passage way. Some real life humans can do that in less attempts. And some real life humans can jump higher too. The vertical for the Werehog is tragic. Like Knuckles in Sonic 2 levels of tragic. Despite Sonic's new found melanin, his hops are more pathetic than ever and it's a damn shame. It doesn't feel like you are playing as some super strong monster, just some above average dude whose default walking speed is on Crowded Grocery Store settings. What's the fantasy supposed to be here? I don't want to be a guy who can only grab onto ledges at seemingly random points. It's not a dream from me. The game feel for this character is a net negative. The controls of the Werehog feel like an adaptation of my battle with depression. It just takes so much effort for what it gives you, that it becomes near impossible to summon the will to go on.
Lastly, this camera is deplorable. You have very little control over what the camera angle is. This isn't inherently a problem as the early God of Wars have mostly fixed cameras. But UnleasHD just decided to give you bad camera angles for reasons I don’t quite understand. I can usually extrapolate why things are designed the way they are but here I’m baffled. The designated angles obscure so much of the screen half the time, making platforming a nightmare and off screen attacks a common occurrence. Being aware of your environment is vital to both platforming and combat, yet it is treated as optional here. This is a combat platformer, it should be one of the most important things aside from jumping and hitting feeling good to do (which it doesn't).
The Sonic Team Werehog does just about everything it can to be worse than the Dimps version. Unwiished is simple but it's good at being simple. UnleasHD is bad at being complex. It gives you a big move set without the fun enemies or a secure environment to use them in. Large droning levels that run out of ideas half way through. Insane gimmicks and spectacle that waste your time after the novelty wears off. HD is a game I'm impressed by, but will never truly like due to how sloppy it is. SD earned my love through tight design and not having a final level that retriggers anxiety disorders that have lain dormant for years (Eggman Land HD is evil, and the final boss isn't even a good cap off for it). And when I think about it. When I get to the core of the matter. It becomes clear what the dynamic between the two games represents.
Unwiished is 6th gen gaming. 6th gen games did the best with what they had. It was such a large leap from the previous generation and the hardware was regularly pushed to the max. But games were allowed to not be the best game of all time. They could be massive slabs of content, or marvels of performance, or mechanically innovative, or graphical milestones. But they weren’t required to be all of these at once. I think that’s why there aren’t a ton of embarrassing 6th gen blunders that come to mind.
UnleasHD is 7th gen gaming. It belongs to an era defined by doubling down on bad ideas and biting off more than you can chew because being impressive is more important than being good. So much of this game is poorly planned out and it’s all in the name of being the next big video game. And my affection for UnWiished makes it clear than I much would have preferred it to be smaller. Because even if it wasn’t as much bang for my buck, there would likely be less things the game ends up tripping over. The tech has caught up. We can see the game in its highest quality. We can see the game at it’s intended framerate. We can go between levels with nearly no load times. But none of that matters. Because not matter what hardware you play it on, UnleasHD is still a mid ass 7th gen game.

A lot of people think that Donald Trump caused the accident and some people think that he was the policeman and it's going around town and the sun things that it's Tommy f so I'm at the bank and think he got out of there and people say it looks true and then he changed in the SUV and you might have to go to court before he did and a lot of people see it he is going to be in trouble momentarily but he is going after his fears and going after Max and they don't appreciate it and they told him too and he ignored it further we are sick of your insulin behavior your little children and your wife has this and we don't need it and you're going to get hurt almost all of you here they're just completely impetuous you're absolutely wrong by doing it because we know what we're doing but our son and daughter say it's an engine we're going to use it so I can bring some Stratton it just won't stop and we're going to use it and take advantage of it speaking of which:

*we have several companies to complete the purchase of one of them is accelerate metal and it's only 10% and it is a purchase agreement and we are going to the next one I think next one the next one this is a very big steel company they have offices all over the world and they do work everywhere and it is a horrendous deal here these people think that they're cover is good so they can do what they want and it's Jason and the idiot thinks he's really slow it's injury and he thinks it was trying to remember Lord driving and his son says I think it was Tommy f and he's screaming he was at the bank it's important company these offices are important and fight club is not being done yet because we haven't signed once you signed they will start their shenanigans and they will say you want to steal building come and have it and all sorts of things and they rig it and they threatening to blow it up and they know that this device is all over it so it's suspicious so I did figure it out they want to go underneath and to do something and that's what they're doing now everybody on Earth though and they keep blaming us it's not really fair and it's not really true it's not the right thing to do is to blame us for what they're doing so we went ahead and decided to try and see why they're doing it and why they think they can get away with it and several of them came forward and said unwillingly more or less that they're doing it because they feel like it and things like that then they said we're doing it because we have all the stuff we have the AI then they said we're doing it because we feel like hitting you and all sorts of dumb things so finally comes down to it he says we kind of suck like you said and wow that aren't coming was grabbed after the Superman movie they made this Superman movie and Trump and his son were in it like touching her in the same place for the most part it was much more rude and she had a bad reaction and was actually juiced up and threw them around and they wanted her to to evoke the reaction I'm just like they did with Brad and they tried to grab our son and failed miserably over and over they're horrible and he started doing illegal stuff and he was getting arrested at UMass and they arrested him and questioned him about Ken's wife and our son said she had a lot more than people think and so they started to drill him and grill him and he didn't appreciate it and went over it and over it and said someone's riding on me I said you know who it is it's the computer so he went and he knows where one of them was and he started talking to it and said who told you he said oh that guy that you never leave alone and I'm supposed to side with you and the computers mad and said he's doing it to all of them so go research and found out that he was saying again start getting his ass kicked till we figure out how it works and we saw all sorts of systems all over the world that's way too much and we can duplicate it and are and it's working for us so that's what happened and just got worse and worse and worse for him and tons and tons of people see it and one day John Lord came up and he started yelling at her son sort of in the grocery store and you saying stupid things and our son turned around and said would you like to go by your being annoying without saying it so goes by and he says you shouldn't say those things and all that and staring at him saying what you want to do so he got real pissed and that's what he says all this stuff when really he's going after the top line top of the line things

On Rex, this is a pretty decent early Blade. If it was rarer and had more battle skills, that'd be better, but Attack Aura is not something to snuff at!

Anyways, with a rare Blade, I figure I might as well go over her stats. This information is taken from the datamine as well as speedrunner Enel's Blade guides with his general advice on how to use the Blades:

Level 1 Special: Blast of Fresh Air - Increases Affinity by 60-100 when using a Special. Ether damage, circular AOE, 1 hit, base damage ratio is 315 and goes up to 504 at S+ rank and max affinity. (actually has decent damage and is relatively fast, but the single hit…)
Level 2 Special: Whoopsie Crazy - Increases aggro drawn from Specials by 60%-100%. Physical damage, single target, 3 hit, has a 25% crit mod, base damage ratio is 440 and goes up to 638 at S+ rank and max affinity. (Ah yes, crits for her super low rate. This is slow, but it might help you get a bit of aggro even though doing more damage would too.)
Level 3 Special: Wake-Up Whirl - Increases damage dealt to toppled enemies by 100%-150%. Physical damage, circular AOE, 1 hit, base damage ratio is 575 and goes up to 782 at S+ rank and max affinity. (Again, decent damage and considering she has a topple art on Morag, she can actually take advantage of the effect. Just a shame it’s only 1 hit.)
Level 4 Special: Perfect Storm - No effect. Ether damage, single target, 4 hit (+2), has a 20% crit mod, base damage ratio is 500 +500 from Driver. (Okay, just her level 3 on toppled enemies would be better.)
Ability 1: Did I Do That? - 10%-20% chance to not deplete recharge after a Driver Art or Special. (Art recharge is better, although this technically could mean she could spam level 4 specials, although...it’s a ⅕ chance when maxed out. It’s not gonna trigger much.)
Ability 2: Doesn’t Ring a Bell - 30%-50% chance to reset recharge for an enemy Art when a Special connects. (Typically enemies have short cooldowns so this is bad for the same reason Kora’s Stop Thinking is bad.)
Ability 3: Surprise! - Increases damage dealt by a surprise attack by 100%-200%. (Shield hammers do little damage, it’s not going to be useful in bosses or challenge mode, doesn’t do anything for the battle itself...yikes.)
Mods: Agility Mod. 15%
God I love her so much, but sadly she's...not a very good Blade. It's unfortunately a common theme among the shield hammer class and Rex is not a great Driver for her, Morag being the best option. BUT MY GIRL
...You know when people talk about designs from this game, I'm surprised everyone always brings up Dahlia and says nothing about Nim. Like the most she gets is people saying "she's the furry bait" but I reject that.

(Low damage and the low hit ratio don’t make it great, but it can be quite useful in a pinch heal.)
Level 2 Special: Wild Grappler - Spawns a small HP Potion on hit, with a 60%-100% chance to spawn 2. Physical damage, single target, 4 hit, base damage ratio is 400 and goes up to 609 at S+ rank and max affinity. (Decent damage ratio, it’s good.)
Level 3 Special: Organic Automata - When landing a hit, restores 30%-50% of damage dealt to the whole party. Ether damage, very large circular AOE, 5 hit, does pierce damage, base damage ratio is 550 and goes up to 782 at S+ rank and max affinity. (A full heal, great damage and a nice amount of hits! Awesome special!)
Level 4 Special: Earth Priestess - No effect. Ether damage, single target, 5 hit (+3), has a 20% crit mod, does pierce damage, base damage ratio is 500 +500 from Driver. (Good for setting up fusion combos, the pierce is great, all in all it’s good.)
Ability 1: Restorative Fusion - Restores party’s HP on starting fusion combo. Effect improves with difficulty. (“Difficulty” is defined by the level of the combo, not the enemy or game setting. Heat plus break will be minor meanwhile mega eruption smash will be major. It goes 3, 3.5, 4, 4.5 then 5. The math is done by counting the stages, such as a topple with a level two Blade combo will be 4, then timzing it by the level of the skill, so 4x5 will be 20 and thus a 20% heal. Pretty great!)
Ability 2: Synthesis Lore - Boosts Fusion Combo effect by 25%-50%. (It boosts EVERYTHING fusion combos do, not just damage! Super good and works so well with her element!)
Ability 3: Wild Familiars - Increases damage dealt to beasts by 40%-80%. (Not horrible since many enemies are classified as beasts, however it is still situational and not the best.)
Mods: Dexterity Mod 10%
Like she's a fine enough Blade, actually a pretty good knuckle claws. Fusion combos are great, but with her stats boosting them, it means she can be amazing with damage over time effects like volcano.
That said, she has never been a Blade I've particularly liked and yeah, it's partially her design. She's just the first in a line of Blades whose art did not translate onto models very well.
Anyways, those are all the noteable Blades from this pull! With Nim and Finch being so early, I'm inclined to believe I'm in group 4, however I didn't harbor enough points for Nim to be a pity Blade. We'll see who my next few pulls are to get a better guess of which group I'm in.
