hello all i have an absolute monster of a meta essay for you that I like to call “The Umbrella Academy is so close to saying something about the concept of nuclear families and if the writers are doing it on purpose its going to be beautiful”. Its almost 2k words.
For the record, since i think its relevant and greatly informs my thoughts, i am a nonpartnering aromantic person and i strongly believe that the idea that a family is a pair of romantic partners and their children needs to go. Thats uh. Bigger than the scope of this essay. But it does inform a lot of my thoughts on this particular theme in the umbrella academy so there you go.
First, some semantics: technically the only family member to actually get to the point of “nuclear family” is Allison, who then divorces her romantic partner. Only her and, technically, Diego, have kids. Most of the others have love interests but because of the beauty of being different people with different life experiences, their particular romances often do not fall specifically into the the box “nuclear family”, though some could eventually given time (and some may not ever). That being said, associated with the term “nuclear family” is a pattern, historically, of children growing up and finding a romantic partner and moving out into a single-family home, where they have children raised only and specifically by them and their romantic partner, and they thus grow apart from their siblings and parents. This is a pattern that is held, at least in America, as The Best pattern, and anyone who does not achieve it is failing in some way. And that pattern, of leaving behind the family you grew up in to make a home and a family with a romantic parter? That’s everywhere in TUA. I would argue that the tension between the siblings’ urges to follow it, and between their urge to reconnect with each other, is one of the main themes and a main source of tension through all of the show.
Pre season 1, most of the Hargreeves build their own lives after escaping from Reginald, but only Allison creates her own family. Then, in season 1, a few relevant things happen
One, Allison is separated from her daughter, and desperately wants to return to her. Returning to her daughter inherently and repeatedly means separating herself from her siblings and returning to a family unit that does not involve them. I am not arguing that this is a bad thing, or that Allison should not be with her daughter; I am pointing out that the family Allison has with Claire is separate from the one she has with her siblings (There is one notable exception to this, based on my memory; Allison asks Luther to join her on her flight to LA in the Day That Wasn’t, after they rekindle their romantic relationship).
Two, Viktor begins a relationship with Leonard, who deliberately isolates him from them, which does fit the pattern but is kinda unfair to use to serve my point lol
Three, Klaus meets Dave. Klaus has the power to return to 2019 at any point he wants, and could even bring Dave if he so chose, but remains in the 60s away from the modern day and his family with Dave until Dave tragically dies.
and Four: the world threatens to end and the umbrella academy tries, badly, to fix it by coming together once again. Allison is constantly torn between wanting to help save the world and wanting to be with her daughter, Viktor is manipulated away from his family (not that the hargreeves probably needed the help lol), and Klaus breaks away entirely to spend months away from them with a man he falls in love with. Bad things? Not necessarily, apart from Viktor’s shitty boyfriend being abusive. But the beginning of a pattern.
Season 2. The Hargreeves have all had months or years in Dallas, and many of them are beginning new lives with new families.
Allison, once again, is married. Viktor has a blossoming relationship with a woman he loves and is devoted to taking care of her son, who he loves too. Diego has acquired a love interest as well (Lila my beloved), Klaus is trying to prevent his past-future boyfriend from enlisting, and Luther is trying to figure himself out. Obviously a major tension in this season is between Five trying to round up his siblings, and his siblings’ prioritizing their lives in Dallas, which they’ve built with hard work and are just getting used to. This does not involve a tension between a nuclear (or nuclear-ish) family and their siblings for all of them, but it does for Allison especially, and Viktor, and to an extent, Klaus. An important thing to note here is that the siblings are not averse to reuniting, as they often were in season 1. They have been worried about each other! They have been looking! and yet even once they reconnect their little lives stay separate. They talk about it, but do not invite their siblings into their lives. They meet love interests offhand, but do not integrate. All of them, even when trying to reconnect, still have two separate lives that they have to choose between.
Season 3. Oh boy.
perhaps not “oh boy” for the reasons that you think. The reason its “oh boy” is because there are three parts to how i will talk about s3: The romantic interests-slash-nuclearish families, the way the hargreeves talk about their own family, and The Ending.
First, Allison again. Allison begins the season once again wishing desperately to find Claire, and mourning leaving Ray behind. She leaves almost immediately, and gets to LA only to find that Claire does not exist. Getting to a world where Claire exists, or Ray exists, or both, becomes her motivation for the rest of the season, pitting her against multiple of her family members. Fair! She is more worried about the family she has lost than the family that is right in front of her and fine, which is perfectly reasonable. And obviously, she is considerably more invested in her toddler’s well being than her adult brothers’. What I point out is that once again, her family with her siblings and the families she’s made are separate entities from each other, and this fact is forcing her to choose between them.
Second, Luther. Luther’s relationship with Sloane begins similarly enough to previous ones in the show- Luther is making a choice between a romantic partnership and his siblings, it causes tension, the romantic partnership and his siblings form two different units and never the twain shall meet. But. Then Sloane gets folded into the Hargreeves siblings- or rather the Umbrellas, since she’s a Hargreeves too lol. Sloane is... not a character, no offense, but I’m presuming that she is supposed to be integrated with the Hargreeves since that is the impression of the writers intentions that I get and for the sake of being nice to them I will pretend that they succeeded. Interesting! A romantic partnership that is integrated into their family, and not existing as a separate one adjacent to the rest of them! That has never happened before. Even Allison and Luther’s romance is not Part of the family formed by the rest of the siblings; it is, narratively, treated as something separate
Three, Diego. And Lila. Once again, a change of pace. Lila comes here for Diego only at first, but quickly is embroiled in the Plot and the Family. Lila has always been more integrated with the family than other love interests, if only because she has much more plot relevance than most of them, but even then her primary real interactions have been with the Handler, outside of the family entirely; or Diego, with the occasional exception of trying to murder Five. This season she is fully and completely part of the family, and has one on one, meaningful interactions with not only Diego but Allison, Five, and Klaus as well.
Two love interests in one season that arent separate from the rest of the family, huh?
So what about the way the Hargreeves talk about their family this season?
Allison begins the season once again wishing desperately to find Claire, and leaves almost immediately. Viktor encourages her to leave, believing that Claire still exists and that finding her will help Allison. To do so, he encourages her to find her “real family”.
Later, Klaus goes on a roadtrip to find his biological mother. On the way, he commiserates with Five about their lives, and they both wonder if what they have could even be called a family.
Contrasting, there are multiple scenes on multiple occasions in season 3 alone where Allison, Five, Luther-- all of them-- declare their love for each other. They’re a family. No matter what.
Hm.
Now The Ending.
The Ending is one of the saddest parts of the show to me, and makes me desperately hope that The Umbrella Academy gets a season 4, because The Ending leaves the siblings utterly divided.
Luther is searching for Sloane.
Diego and LIla are presumably going to build a life together with their future child.
Allison is all the way in LA, living an idyllic dream where both Ray and Claire are alive and returned to her.
Even the remaining siblings, who do not have lives laid out for them, have walked away from one another to return to normal, nonpowered lives. If the story ends here, in the tension between the family you grow up with and the family you build with a partner, the siblings have prioritized their own lives, and the family they’ve spent three seasons trying to reconstruct falls apart under the weight of.... living a normal life.
What I want from the Umbrella Academy, what I hope we get if there is ever a fourth season, is the Hargreeves figuring out what family works for them. They have constantly been pulled between their siblings and their own lives, and have almost never allowed the two to mix. I find the story of the nuclear family, where all people are expected to find a partner and have children and for that and only that to make a normal life, to be depressing and isolating. I desparately want the Hargreeves, who have been trying so hard to reconnect, to find a better story for themselves. Every season so far has been building a stage for this storyline. Season 3 is literally ending with many of the Hargreeves getting idyllic little family units while walking away from each other, and if that doesn’t spell “we’re going to be Dealing With That” then I don’t know what does. They really could be telling a story that says “Leaving the family you grew up in behind doesn’t have to be the only answer”. It could be so good. But do i trust the writers to realize what they’re doing, or is their writing just littered with unexamined assumptions about how families are structured? I just don’t know.

oh, also, some lyrics and drawings have story reasons for being grouped together, and some went where they looked good. uh. ideally id make sure everything had reason for its location, but this is one area where i did correctly estimate my time, instead of getting stuck in the planning phase.

OH also!! the part where vitalasy jumps off to his death! is as far as i can tell NOT canon accurate!! all the footage shows him jumping off the prison, since thats where he respawns. i didnt think to check this until after id already drawn most of the stuff, and already had the prison drawn, and i didnt want to reorganize the drawing. im telling myself that we only see a few of the later deaths and so theoretically the first one could have been jumping off a grassy ledge somewhere but its still bothering me and i needed to mention it.
anyway yeah really hope you like it i tried some new stuff with this one im not sure how well it turned out and thanks again for being so patient!!
EDITING TO ADD SOME MORE WORDS!!! i love talking about my art! so first, all the text on signs and stuff i did go back and look at videos and vods to make sure was entirely accurate, and i wrote all the words entirely by myself. for the lyrics and other text(death message and DELIVERANCE), i used a text tool first to make sure the words would be neat and where i needed them, and then traced over that on a new layer and deleted the original text layer. my handwritting fucking sucks always no matter what, this was a very necessary step. also! this is officially the first thing i have drawn entirely on my phone, rather than on my ipad like i used to do! also i dont use a stylus of any type i just draw with my finger lol.

Edit: okay i read through it once and added some things and made it more readable and not so out of place.
So there's apparently a debate about whether the mind flayer controls Vecna or the other way around.
I think it's the other way around. Vecna created the mindflayer.
Because at one point the mindflayer was called the spider monster.
And the mind flayer also looks like a spider, sort of

It just seems more plausible that he created the mindflayer and gave it some of his abilities, and created it in the shape of a spider cuz he loves them rather than him just falling into a place with a monster that happens to look like something he loves.
Also when he's drawing spiders, he draws then with a red center. The red symbolizing the opening of the gates to the upside down? hmmmm.
He wanted to create a perfect world, a "predator" but for good. Which is what's he's literally doing , the predator being the mindflayer.
In his monologue he mentions he wanted to hold up a mirror, which is exactly what the upside down is. A mirror of the real world.
Something else that he says when he was placed with Dr brenner, that he was a Dr " he hoped to escape"
So he knew who brenner was before the murders. And when he opened his eyes from the coma, he called him papa.
So he already knew brenner and reffered to him as papa. hmmmm.
Maybe brenner did give him powers.
Now This whole thing was during the war yes?
Headcanon that It could be that they were experimenting new weapons and called for volunteers.
His mother must've gone in for those and might've been pregnant with henry, and in turn through some way Henry got powers. But no one knew about till Henry was born or till he was a little older.
His mother took him to Dr's and scientists and stuff but no one knew what was wrong.
Till she came across Brenner again. Brenner suggested to take him to run some tests and experiment on him.
Perhaps his ways were little harsh and those traumatized henry, especially being in a cold isolated environment. Hnery saw the horrible things they were doing in the lab and didnt like it.
Henry says his powers come form a memory that make him sad but also angry, but he had those powers since he was kid. It could be the experiments that were run on him that are a memory that he is deriving his power from.
So his mother and brenner both agreed on the plan they move to Hawkins, brenner would keep and eye on them from afar so Henry could have a " normal life" and not be traumatized.
They probably didnt expect him to actually start murdering people.
Vecna also mentions that his mother had an idea that he was behind the strange things happening in his house. Now come on, if something weird happens people don't normally think their child was responsible for it, unless you had a good reason such as already knowing your child has some powers.
She wanted to send him away? Yeah I think she wanted to send him to be with brenner because she couldn't control Henry anymore and it was all getting too much.
So to avoid that Henry killed his family because he didn't want to go starting with his mother.
Another theory for if it was the mindflayer that came first is that maybe the hawkins lab tapped into the upside down and it was the exposure of the toxic air by the mother that gave henry power. Maybe the mindflayer got him and brainwashed him into doing his bidding and convincing him humans are bad and stuff.

now. THE THING ABOUT skin game ch2. is that it's pretty rough. i had a look at it the last time something prompted me to think about the fic and it's not really presentable (i don't know if i even finished editing it back in ….. 6 years ago… oh god). it also doesn't have all of its art (which might be a blessing in disguise given the art it does have is …. 6 years old… oh god)
getting it to a state i consider readable would take a good chunk of work, which is why i put it off again after looking at it. it's almost 12 thousand words of … uhhh… shall we say… unnnnpolished material. i think i couldn't even share it privately because i would be embarrassed to show someone something so unfinished and janky. not to mention not having all of its art finished. so i got kind of stuck last time and just put it off again bc the amount of work it very obviously needed was like. "Christ OK Not Now" yknow…
it does bolster the spirit when i remember you and your friends. it means a lot to me that you care about it even after so long!!! i just have NO idea when i'm going to get around to editing something of that magnitude @_@ i was really a dummy about chapter lengths back then… HFDBHJGJMK
it's really kind of a shame too becahse chapter 1 and 2 together are sort of the introductory portion for our 2 primary characters. so it feels like only half of the intro is done right now. since ch1 detailed how kyrie ended up at that plaza meeting takano, ch2 would detail how takano ended up there, meeting kyrie. and then we would proceed into the future from there. as a renowned Takano Guy, obviously i was very interested in this, but for various reasons i never finished polishing it and drawing the art…
ch2 also features ikuko so you KNOW its dear to me
overall being like 5-6 yrs old theres a disconnect where i don't feel like ch2 right now is achieving what it should, and i see a lot of concrete problems with concrete solutions, but it's an editing of such Magnitude that it keeps being pushed back in favor of other stuff. oh, ephemeral soul…
some of the art i did get done for it is pretty cute though, like these baby miyos;
so that's pretty good, but i didnt FINISH drawing the art, ARGHH
it is really hard to say. bc when i KNOW there's people out there who remember it and care about it, that does motivate me to return to it. but it has a lot of stuff that needs doing, and is a very old project, so it's unclear to me right now when it would receive the attention it desperately needs before it can be shown to other people... i super can't in clear conscience accept anything like payment/etc for that kind of vague half-promise either, although i appreciate the thought xD
i'm sorry it's such an inconclusive answer, but i am sort of an inconclusive guy when it comes to projects... i jump around a lot as i'm sure you've observed in your time following me 😭 it's important to me to have that freedom, but i do care about SG too, so we just sort of have to see if i can surmount the magnitude of the work i accidentally set up for myself half a decade ago (*turning into stone*)
but it makes me smile when i remember you're out there thinking about this weird little AU. so, thanks. 😌 a soul still burns...

i feel like i achieved alot today at work and then for work when i got home as well. i had to retype some pages and adjust them to make them easily readable and flow better in a step by step way which i think i did pretty well.
it all around probably took ~ 2 hours which if it had been anyone else but me they would’ve taken alot longer just to even type the words…. i typed and edited something up super quick within like 15-10 minutes and my boss was like well wait you didnt have to do that you can just copy and paste… and i was like yeah but its not like its hard to type lol…? i dont get how they think that’s saving any time. its literally not that big of a deal and i kept being so confused on why she kept reiterating i could just copy and paste it and im like okay but i also want to make it easier to read and to do that i have to word it in different ways sometimes. idk anytime i do something with computers theyre like well why didnt you do this nd its like because i like doing it this way im autistic and better with computers than you are calm down bro lol
they also always ask me why i make so many posters to put everywhere (which honestly is NOT alot ive made like 2-3 and do plan to make more but thats beside the point) its so people can start taking accountability when ive already told them five billion times so when its right in front of them when they do the thing they cant be like “oh i forgot” or “oh i didnt know” like i s2g!!! i try to be so nice and accommodating to newcomers esp ones who have learning disabilities like adhd and the such bc i get that but sometimes its like…. if you cant even remember the one simple thing of a poster or remember to notice it… i cant help u bro…. i do my best to make it eye catching and use simple words (but not to where its vague and people ask questions or wonder bc i have to have precise instructions as well so) but idk… i understand it will take a long time for it to stick once the routine is finally ingrained but getting there can be so grueling!! and maybe im not even frustrated at them im frustrated at how others arent so nice… i hate hearing people complain so i always feel like its my responsibility to try and help or like when they complain its always on me to get it done? and most of the time it is… but im glad kasey is back so we have someone other than me who remembers and is WILLING to do her job. so that i can properly train the new girls then…
anyways …. i am satisfied BUT I GAINED FIVE POUNDS ?! im assuming from stress and my period which…. i still need to get everything for myself settled i just keep genuinely forgetting:/
i need to take my meds on a regular basis again for good

The Baker is a cut-character from Little Nightmares 2, though he does make a brief appearance within the Little Nightmares 2 comics.
The Baker works within a kitchen/television studio in the Pale City, allowing for his show to be broadcast through the use of the Signal Tower’s transmission.
In the concept art, the Baker is an incredibly tall figure, though that is common among most adults. He dresses in a long-sleeved white shirt and teal apron. There is nothing incredibly abnormal about his appearance, other than the five cables protruding from his throat where a head should be. This implies that he is connected to some sort of unseen device located somewhere within the studio that may play a part in his broadcast. Despite having no head, the Baker seems to function just the same. It is unknown how, though the thought of it is incredibly similar to the patients within the Pale City hospital.
In the Little Nightmares 2 comics, the Baker is essentially the same as his concept art counterpart, with the only significant difference being that the Baker within the comics has a head. He looks incredibly similar to a Viewer, though his face is obscured by a bright light, so it is unknown if he has any defining facial features or not.
If the Baker is able to preform a skill-driven task-- such as baking food-- without the interference of a television, then that must mean he is not a regular Pale City citizen. Instead being similar in disposition to the Teacher, Barber, and Doctor.

ALL MISUKAZU AUS ARE GOOD but. i really love any au where their first meeting is in the future and both are still kind of lost but they're Older and it's hard to let themselves fall into the easy trust they find in canon. i just think that'd be neat.

this isn't a "least fav" so much as "it makes me sad" but if either of them showed any sign of not being interested anymore the other is more likely to give up then push anything. sort of like "it was bound to happen, so i'll enjoy now until they drop me" or EVEN WORSE they think the other would be better off without them and pushes them away. so yeah the fact i can see one of these happening makes me sad.
If they aren’t a canon pairing, how would you get them together?
they give off "everyone knows we're dating but us" energy but at the same time i feel like they'd acknowledge there's something and just not define it bc a) they don't need to (misumi) or b) they're too nervous to (kazu). in other words i think one day they are holding hands and misumi says "kazu? is this dating?" and kazu holds his breath before asking "do you want it to be?"
If you had to take them and plunk them into another fandom, what fandom would that be? Why?
i think theyd be hilarious in any sports animanga (kazu is manager tho bc noodle arms but maybe they bond when misumi walks him through some of his usual training menu one night - ahem. anyway) BUT ALSO horimiya au...

in terms of what i ship, i tend to ship kazu and misumi individually with a lot of dif charas AJDHAKD. but in terms of like... in-universe "rival" pairings:
kazu side: tsuzukazu (maybe, lbr it would take them 273924 yrs to actually get together), kazu x someone from winter (i... have my reasons but they'd take longer than what this answer entails)
misumi side: ... surprisingly none that i can think of ahdjahd

OOOOOH BOY well. i think it could be either of them. i don't think they'd break up for lack of love but too much love and wanting the other to be happy and thinking that the only way to give them that is to let them go. so i guess the question is which of them would be more likely to be selfish and hold on. thinking this way, i think misumi would be more likely to break-up, bc kazu has lots of friends who are better than him!! and misumi is more ready to leave if he thinks he needs to than kazu is. now im sad.
Are they relatable as characters or as a pairing?
THE NUMBER OF TIMES I'VE BEEN CALLED KAZU KIN... in all seriousness kazu's struggles with speaking out and (shinobi spoilers) his uncertainty over his future hit real close to home... while i don't relate as much as misumi, his struggles always manage to tear my heart into pieces... ((oversharing alert) i guess what really separates me from misumi is his struggle with his desire to connect with family who has treated him poorly... whereas im more "lol fuck you")

TBH I FINISHED THE MAIN STORY AND WENT "OH MY GOD... THAT'S MY SHIP" but now that i'm here i continue to ship them because they have the potential to bring out both the best and the worst in each other and i'm all about that

EXTRA 1: how do they spend breaks/vacation?
they'd travel a lot when they're older!! kazunari loves to travel and misumi would follow kazunari anywhere (also, new triangles!!) so they go somewhere new whenever they have the time. however i think eventually one or both of their future careers will take them anywhere and everywhere anyway, so their "ideal vacation" might turn into an evening in, cuddling and catching up (as if they didn't already send play-by-play updates over the phone of whatever they did during the day)
EXTRA 2: first date?
i don't they ever have an explicit first date, but if asked they'll cite the time they had a picnic in the park turned triangle hunt turned accidental dip in the duck pond. at least, kazunari will. misumi just tilts his head and wonders what you mean.
EXTRA 3: gifts?
IM FEELING REALLY CHEESY SO I'M MAKING THIS ABOUT ANNIVERSARY GIFTS they both end up getting each other jewelry (although kazu was really really nervous bc he wasn't sure if misumi would wear it). kazu gets misumi a bracelet (with triangles, of course although misumi only wears it sometimes because he doesn't want to lose it) and misumi gets kazu a pair of triangle earrings "so we can match!" and kazunari combusts at the implications
EXTRA 4: sharing clothes
THEY'RE ACTUALLY AROUND THE SAME SIZE (and tend to wear baggier stuff barring kazu's skinny jeans)... but they have completely different Styles so it's still really obvious when steal each other's stuff ahdjajdkaf. as cute as kazu would look in sumi's sweatshirt i think the much more likely scenario is kazu wrapping misumi in his jackets because this boy nEVER BRINGS HIS ANYWHERE anyway just. accidental shared wardrobe misukazu.
EXTRA 5: lake house au
consider: kazunari living in a house on the shore of a lake for a summer for Art Purposes (and a little bit for Dealing With Life purposes but he's not gonna admit that) and meets his lake neighbor misumi who kazu thinks might be a ghost or spirit for a while but he actually just lives further down the lake and misumi unknowingly helps kazu with his Life Issues and maybe they fall in love

Epilogue
Vale Halleck sat at her desk, and glanced out her wide window to see a city skyline of cranes, hover constructors, drones, and workers busying themselves. In the far distance, a dim glow reminded her that she was on the same hemisphere as the Imperial Palace.
She opened a side drawer and looked at a slug pistol she kept loaded, until sliding it shut again; she hoped it would not be necessary.
Before her, a tidy leather-bound book rested. She ran a finger over its spine, then glanced at a framed photograph of her and a military man.
The door to her office, framed by artificial plants, buzzed repeatedly.
“Enter” she said, gulping slightly.
Shadowed somewhat by the bright hall lighting which backlit the figures robe, a menacing presence stood. It clanked and hissed as pistons moved and machinery churned beneath its simple dull red robes, its only feature visible in the light the two dull orange lids of a biomechanical gasmasked face.
The figure stepped forward into the neutral light of Arch-Medicae Halleck’s office, and the door gently slid shut.
Halleck gestured, and with a holo display enabled blinds for her window, blocking out the evening lights of the rebuilding Imperial superstructure of Terra.
“Why have I been summoned.” The tech-magos intoned, clearly impatient despite her dispassionate mechanical voice.
“I’d like your assistance with a project I’m conducting, Magos Augustine.” Halleck began, carefully laying out her thoughts.
“This is beneath my talents. Other projects demand my attention.”
“I’m certain your lords in Malcador’s personal organization can wait.”
The magos immediately drew a pistol, and fired it without hesitation at Medicae Halleck- only for the shot to impact a wall.
Halleck considered the reaction from her office, watching the magos through a holo window.
“I’ll cut to the heart of things, Magos Augustine, or do you prefer Adept Klicke? I’m summoning you here to get your testimony regarding a captain you briefly worked alongside of during the Horus Heresy, Jan Harlock.”
The magos froze, her pistol grip shaking, ultimately a mechadendrite reaching out, retrieving the weapon, and holstering it as she dropped her arm.
“What?” The mechanical voice asked.
“I started information gathering when I recieved word my lover had died on Centauri Prime. General Storm, you likely wouldnt have known him well. He had taken an interest in your army captain during the great crusade, and we had a file prepared that would have released him from Imperial service. But..”
Halleck sighed, and tossed her arms up gently. “Horus happened. So much for that.”
The Magos listened, saying nothing.
“I was curious about what happened to him, especially after i learned he was there when Storm died. I’ve been doing some digging ever since. Until last week, two days after the second anniversary of his death on Hesperax, I got my hands on this.”
Halleck tapped the bound book on her desk.
“I recovered it from the army’s property claimage system- it seems Harlock didnt have any next of kin to pick up his belongings. Almost all of it was put up as army surplus, destroyed, or handed off to new troops, but they had nothing to do with his personal writings, which he kept seperate from his own mission logs.”
Making a tent with her fingers, Halleck looked at the Magos. “Lets finish this charade before we go on. The door to my office is to the left, its time you left my waiting room.”
The door opened, and the magos walked through it, remaining silent.
“Good, now were face to face.” Halleck said, watching the reactions of the tech priestess.
“How do you know who I am?” the adept asked. “Do you really think your the only one with connections? Where do you think people go after they get cut up by traitor marine remnants they were hunting on Terra, over a year after it was declared traitor-free? There are only so many ‘construction accident’ excuses one can make until they need a good doctor to come in and care for the entire situation.”
The magos folded her arms.
“Your compromising my cover for a dead man.”
Vale couldnt help but be surprised. “I knew you martians had metal hearts, but you’re impressively blunt. Is that a defense mechanism? Or did you fall into his arms by accident one night? These writings outline your relationship clearly.”
The magos recoiled slightly, her stance changing. “And just what gives you the write to read them? You weren’t there. What the hell do you know?!”
Halleck nodded. “I see. I’m in mourning too, you know. Its only been two years now, since the apocalypse. Thats what I like to call it. What other word suffices?”
The magos snapped: “I’m not in mourning- I’m-”
“Listen. I’ll answer your question. The reason I read these documents is because no one else will. I don’t know why Harlock wrote all he did. Maybe he felt good to have a release, or a tell-all. But as far as war memoirs go this is surprisingly frank and honest. Usually I read about super-men thwarted only by circumstance. This reading is hard, honest, and carefully considered.”
The magos paused for a time. It was clear she was looking at the book, considering her options.
“What will you do with it?”
Halleck ran her fingers over the book. “In my opinion this should be preserved in any museum of the crusades, and the ones that we’llmake for the Heresy as well. But- there are many accounts already. And I don’t think the colourful words here really fit that. Your old captain had a knack for making his diaries quite readable for a common man.”
The Magos walked up and gently picked up the book, flipping through entries.
“There is a lot here.”
Halleck slowly drew a lho stick and lit it, leaning on her desk with a sigh.
“Well, you aren’t wrong about that. Its not just his words too. Theres a copy of my notes and investigations as well. As much data on that regiment of his that I could. Records from remembrancers of the crusades, sketches of him, recordings of bawdy drinking songs, the works. I’ve had a bit of free time- and I think you and I both know how dangerous that can be.”
Halleck exhalled a stream of smoke, gently sucked up by soundless environment fans above her.
“But, I’m a poor writer, and I dont want to hand this off to some hack fraud war propagandist to turn this into some Imperial Army adventure piece. I’ve considered it. I’d like you to edit and revise that mess of journals and notes into something readable- from the perspective of someone who was actually there. Who could make the hard calls on what is or is not cut. Excise yourself if you must meddle with them- I’ve considered that too. Or burn them, if you really don’t care about him, or your memories there.”
Halleck turned, her jaw taut.

Halleck stared at her, then slumped back in her chair, staring at the blinded window and enjoying her lho stick.
“...Very well. This can be done.” The magos said, in her unnatural mechanical voice.
Halleck exhaled.
“Good. It’s all there, and on a data disk near the back as well. I can help get it to publishers when your done. I cant promise you it will be the widest release- given the saturation in the market of books just like that... but maybe he’ll live on as more than some anonymous grave in a centauri state graveyard.”
The magos nodded, folded the book into her robes, and made to leave.
“One more thing.” Halleck said, finishing her lho stick.
“August 3rd, two years ago. Port Vangelis. Why didn’t you show? Near as I could tell you were alive and able. And dont give me some line about the Inquisition.”
The magos stopped as she stood upon the threshold to the exit.
“Colonel Harlock died on Centauri Prime. The heresy took what little fragments that were left of that noble man and ground them into a fine paste, like so many others. Do you think I could have redeemed the war for him? Do you think that there was anything any of us could have done? Behind the deeds, he was the most wounded human I have ever met. Do you want the truth? I didn’t go, because I was scared. Scared of becoming like him. Scared to see the face of 800 years of war. I’m not some galactic hero, Vale. Neither was he. He was just a man, a soldier, who earned his survival by paying the price no one dared: his soul.”
The magos turned, her hood glowing from the light emanating from the magos’ mask.
“Even machines have souls, Halleck. To peer into the absence of one, is to peer into chaos. You think Harlock survived the Horus Heresy? Wrong. He fought it every single day. Until at last, mercifully, he didn't have to any more.”
With that, the Magos crossed the thresh-hold, exited the room, and left.

Psalm: I wouldn't say it hurts, but it feels about as pleasant as you'd imagine coughing up smoke would feel, which is to say, not pleasant at all. It mostly just makes it hard to breath, but considering the reason it happens I'm not sure I'm allowed to complain. I'd rather not take my chances.
It does bother me though.

Psalm: There's a dish back in my hometown that we'd eat on holidays called “Smelt and Salt". Most travellers tend to find it salty to the point of being inedible, but I think its delicious.
Finn: The servants at our residence are quite skilled, I enjoyed almost everything they make. When I was alive, I favored simple chicken breast with baked vegetables though.
Rokka: Nothing can go wrong with a big ol' pot of beef and potato stew! I love soups
Han: we dont get a lot of fruit way south so i was so surprised when i saw lots of it at shorewater!!!!! ITS SO SWEET AND DELICIOUS!!!!!!!!!!
Plum: theres this stew that my whole family comes together to make for special occasions and we put a lot of roots and flowers and vegetables in it its pretty good. havent had it in a while

Psalm: I've never really given that much thought. I don't really make any grand plans for myself, as they tend to go awry fairly often. I think I'd enjoy writing plays...perhaps.

Psalm: I'm torn between knowing the truth about one thing from the past, and a very selfish glimpse into the future.

Plum: i remember........ bumping into the kitchen table when i was younger and something might've been a rolling pin hitting me on the head and then fucking crying obviously and my parents swinging me around

Finn: I took good care of my hair before I became undead. So my hair would've been it.
Psalm: Regarding physical traits...my mother and I have identical eyes and horns. Mum found it cute, so I guess I grew up being somewhat fond as well... Interal, I don't self reflect that often. I'll leave that unanswered.

School and life stuff
First off stop being that bitch. The one who didn't do jackshit and is constantly mooching off others for the work. Dont complain and say you were too busy. If you legitimately have an issue with management try talking to a teacher, an older classmate or the guidance counselor. Solve your problems, in math and life and don't be afraid to ask for help in either. In life and on these apps, sometimes there are problems only you can solve
Study groups do help but make sure you know the difference between copying each other and goofing off and actually helping each other and getting work done. Everyone has different learning and teaching styles and it is important to find out what works best for you when it comes to these groups. Though having people with different methods can help you develop skills that pertain to that style.
Quizlet I didnt know about or utilize quizlet until my sophomore year of highschool and I regret it. While quizlet can provide answers, it also provides a very easy an convenient wayk to study. You can make your own flashcards, take tests and quizzes based off those flashcards, hear them verbally, if they arent too long, write in a different language(good for language learning in vocabulary) and you can play games with the vocab. 10/10 I reccomend, especially for memorization and I think the quizlet plus is super cheap.
Photomath I'm really bad at math like not to a worrying amount but like not that good and sometimes I need help. After a certain point you cant ask your parents for help with schoolwork because they have no idea unless they're a mathematician or a math teacher. Photomath can help give you the answer and then show you how to do it but in terms of helpfulness I give it a 4-5/10 because it's kind of vague and unhelpful and it doesn't show you how your teacher teaches it and they'll likely notice. It has graphing help and settings if you're looking for a specific way to solve the problem. It has limitations and can only solve so much. I do reccomend it's calculator if you dont have a fancy one at home. I mostly reccomend this for checking answers. The name refers to being able to take pictures of math problems and scan and solve them. Make sure your handwriting is neat and readable and make sure the equation is correct when it scans, you can edit it by hand too.
Dezmos is a free online graphing calculator that you can access on your school computer and your phone. Idk much about graphing calculators but I'm sure itll be helpful at some point. 7/10 bc I dont use it
Spanishdict is a super helpful translator for learning spanish. If you're writing something and want to double check that its right. I dont reccomend using on all of your Spanish homework or work because sometimes it uses words from different dialects than the one you're learning, but it is super useful if you just need one word and dont trust google translate. 9/10
Brainly is really helpful for those questions you just dont get and I really reccomend, sometimes it's just answers but other times its solutions and indepth explanations on how you get the answer. The brainly plus is expensive in my opinion but kind of worth it and they have it so you can just forward it to your parents and theres like a video that explains it and if they want to pay for it so you dont feel bad or awkward. I reccomend sharing with a friend of group of friends that can collectively pay for it so it doesn't seem as expensive. The brainly plus has a similar feature to photomath where you can take pictures and scan it and itll look for that question or the answers or you can be the first one to ask, it's kind of like a forum 10/10
Slader has textbook answers for a variety of textbooks but doesnt cater to all of them and for this reason I'm giving it a 7/10 like it's useful for checking answers but it's kind of limited in what it has
Sparknotes are great when you get into highschool and have to read Shakespeare and difficult old british literature. It sums up content by chapters in an easy to read way and has a bunch of other features on their website. I think they have study guides and tests that you can take on chapters. They also have a bunch of memes on their social media. 9/10 I dont reccomend not reading the work and just reading the sparknotes, sometimes they glaze over important information or key details.
youtube is great for math but I havent really looked for anything else. YouTube in general is great for anything you're unsure of or need help with. 10/10 sometimes it explains things that my teacher didnt convey too well.
My favorite youtube channels for school include:
Señor Jordan for spanish, he will be weird I'm sorry hes got like a weird blues clues vibe idk
Khan academy on YouTube for algebra and just general stuff, the khan academy website is what we use for sat prep
Audiobooks, I dont have a specific channel but sometimes I cant read the book but I need to do stuff. Finding a good one is difficult but once you find a good one you cant stop.
A lot of teachers make videos to teach stuff and let their students review it when they get home so I reccomend looking up whatever you're having trouble with.
Podcasts.
Other general tips:
Dont put things off until last minute.
Use everything at your disposal, like youtube and tiktok and pinterest to learn things, about school and real life skills.
Dont say no one ever taught you something if you can teach yourself.
Dont make excuses for yourself or others.
Growing up is realizing you need to be your own mom/dad and take care of yourself.
I dont take constructive criticism so smd or dont idk.
Learn as much as you can
Dont worry, if you did your best that's all you can do. And I mean your actual best not your half ass excuse that you think is your best
Girlfriends and significant others dont matter in school, what matters is the betterment of yourself and your future.

The Hardest Thing About Writing A Book
All my life I wanted to write a book. At first I wrote four books that agents and publishers all rejected.
I thought the hard part was getting a book accepted. Having someone like me.
But this wasnt the hard part at all. Anyone who is persistent will get that part done.
These were the hard parts. So hard its probably cost me years of my life and definitely much happiness.
But I survived. And you can also. Awareness is the key.
1. SITTING
Writing is boring. Its unnatural. Its basically sitting and staring at a screen and typing into a keyboard.
Three activities that our ancient ancestors for hundreds of thousands of years never did. We did not evolve in order to write books.
We evolved to notice very quickly a rustling in the bushes, the smell of prey or predator, the smile and body language of a potential mate. We evolved to move and to adapt to unusual conditions and to learn and to do all of the things necessary for survival.
We even evolved (at least homo sapiens did) to play music. Because rhythm and melody became the first way we communicated over long distances.
But we didnt evolve to write. Only in the past 2,000 years (and really only the past 200) our of 2,000,000 for hominids, has writing become something we do.
2. NO DISTRACTIONS
Because of the above, I always had to create an environment of zero distractions.
For my very first book, my family went to stay with my in-laws and I spent two weeks locked in my house and did nothing but write.
I turned off Internet, no TV, nothing. Just wrote. This was very hard. Im too used to being distracted. Its natural to be distracted.
For one of my recent books I rented a place in the mountains, had a ton of food delivered, no Internet access, and wrote non-stop for two weeks.
For another book, I went on a silent retreat. No talking at all. I had a tiny dorm room and a bed and a shared bathroom. Nobody in the facility could speak. I spent a week there and even had one day where I wrote over 30,000 words.
3. STORY
Everything has a story.
Fiction, non-fiction, self-help, even a good tweet.
A story is a reluctant hero who gets inspired. Obstacles along the way until the FINAL CONFLICT. And then the journey home. A hero.
Theres many variations on that. Just like theres variations on how to make a good cake. But the basic rules are followed.
Else it wont read well. It will be like an academic science paper.
4. BOOK-SPECIFIC STUFF
This is a post about books and not writing in general so there are other book-specific items that a writer cant ignore.
A book is not just the 4080,000 words in the middle.
A book is a cover. A back-cover. Two flaps. And an interior.
All of these parts require a professional designer. At least two (one for cover, one for interior). People judge a book by the cover and the readability. Else they wont buy it.
A book requires an editor. Its hard to be both writer and editor. An edit gives ideas on how to improve structure, how to improve coherence, and then probably a separate editor for line-by-line grammar and spelling.
A book requires an audiobook. Audiobooks sell. Dont ignore them. This requires a studio, a producer for when you are in studio, and an audio engineer to clean it up. Then it requires Audible.
A book requires marketing. This might mean agent / editor / publisher or it might mean you do it yourself. Doing the marketing yourself (or with a publisher) requires you build a social media platform, share lots of content for free, come up with ideas for promotions, etc.
Book marketing doesnt end in the first month, or the second month. If you have a good book, you never stop marketing it. I am still marketing Choose Yourself, which I wrote four years ago.
Many books require a foreign rights agent. And a speaking agent to create the most opportunities for your book.
5. PSYCHOLOGY
Finishing the book, delivering the book, watching the book come out, dealing with both good and bad reviews, requires some self-awareness.
Its not enough to have self-love. You might get overconfident. You have to have self-awareness of the good points and bad points of your book. And you have to be able to deal with the inevitable highs and lows.
Not every good book get successful. Not every bad book dies a quick death. You finished the book and the outcome is only about 20% in your control.
Dealing with that psychology is painful.
6. THE NEXT BOOK
The hardest part of finishing a book is starting the next book. This is often the most important way to market the first book. How many authors didnt achieve success until their second or third books?
Many.
When I finished my first book I said to myself, This was brutal. I am never going to do it again. But then a few months later I started the second.
When I just finished and released my 18th book, Reinvent Yourself, I said to myself (and this was just a month ago), Im about done with books now for awhile.
Ive since outlined my 19th, 20th, 21st, and 22nd books.
Im really doomed.
But I love it more than anything. I love it.
