GFL girls watching a horror movie with their S/O?

yeah I rewatched emesis blue and I need to see other people get scared

(GFL) Kalina, Helianthus, G36, AK-15, RPK-16, Architect, Scarecrow, M16A1, G11, and HK416 watching a horror movie with their S/O

I just finished watching Stasis: Bone Totem for the past 7 hours personally. I'm sad now.

Kalina happily snuggles next to S/O, eating popcorn as S/O held onto her for dear life.

She wasn't that troubled by the horror movie they put on.

Mostly because it gave her some fantastic ideas for Halloween this year!

(S/O) "K-Kalina, why are you smiling?!"

(Kalina) "Hm...I think I can recreate that with some of the T-Dolls, the way we can utilize our stealth tech can make one helluva haunted mansion!"

(S/O) "You're going to monetize ghosts?!"

(Kalina) "Heck yeah, I am!"

She does jump at a few of the scares but laughs them off.

Helian can't help but wonder if this is what the younger couples did nowadays. Or rather, if they still did this kind of thing.

She sat with S/O in the darkness, huddled up next to them on the couch as the TV provided their entertainment for the night.

(Helianthus) "I doubt that this movie will be that scary."

It in fact, was that scary.

Some of the scares get Helian to scream, latching onto S/O.

Which she immediately tries to clear her throat and preserve some dignity.'

(Helianthus) "...Tell anyone about this, and you're a dead man/woman."

G36 has to put on her glasses in order to watch the film properly.

She couldn't help but fidget a little, she wasn't used to just...sitting down and doing nothing.

But admittedly, it was a nice change of pace.

G36 flinches at some of the scares, but she can't help but laugh at least a little, making sure S/O was comfortable.

Or more accurately, not scared out their mind.

(G36) "You are shaking a lot. Do you require warmer blankets?"

(S/O) "N-NO! Just...s-stay here, don't leave me alone!"

(G36) "Necromorphs are not real-"

(S/O) "C-Can we make sure the vents are locked tight tonight?"

G36 just smiles at that.

15 doesn't really understand why S/O is watching horror movies if they were scared of it.

If this was just some elaborate ruse just for 15 to hold them tightly, they could've just asked her directly.

Regardless, she obliges them because it made them happy.

She doesn't react in the slightest to any of the scares, finding the whole concepts of ghosts and spirits illogical.

(AK-15) "You know they don't exist S/O. Why are you so afraid?"

(S/O) "I-I don't know! It just freaks me out, alright?!"

She notices their heartbeat calms down at least a little if her arms are wrapped around them, which she comfortably holds them in her grasp the duration of the movie and night.

At least they trusted her strength so much, they believed she could punch a demon back to hell.

That makes her pride go up an substantial amount, though she doesn't vocalize it.

Otherwise, she doesn't flinch from a single thing in the movie, even the more grotesque parts.

16 is highly amused the entire time, watching as S/O is latching onto her during the movie.

She also can't help but wonder why humans would make something so strange.

Did they want to be scared? Was the human race nothing but masochists?

(RPK-16) "Why exactly did we choose this type of movie tonight, S/O? You seem to be trembling."

(S/O) "Well, I thought it'd be fun..."

(RPK-16) "Hm, well it gives me a few ideas on how to get some interesting reactions out of you at least."

For the remainder of the night, she has a smug grin on her face as S/O squirms and yelps from the scares.

She began to ponder on what exactly S/O was afraid of. The girl with long hair, the loud noises? This was going to be a fun time experimenting!

She isn't affected by the movie at all, save for getting ideas to scare S/O.

Architect is absolutely terrified with S/O, making her almost drop the bucket of popcorn and candy she has.

(Architect) "AGH! DID YOU SEE THAT?!"

(S/O) "W-WHAT?! NO, WHAT?!"

Like S/O, she gets way too immersed in the film and the both of them are shaking in fear.

When they go to bed, Architect has her weapon directly next to the bedside, with S/O making no complaints.

(Architect) "I-If any demon bastard wants to go through that door, they'll be blown the hell up!"

(S/O) "...Wait, this is my room. Why did you have that in here to begin with-"

(Architect) "For situations like these! I don't wanna be killed by some ghost!"

Scarecrow finds this whole ordeal illogical. She doesn't get scared by anything, let alone by human entertainment.

The reason why S/O called her to watch these escaped her, but it's not like she had anything better to do.

She blankly stares at the screen as she feels S/O hug her tightly, her irises adjusting to the brightness of the screen.

Her voice remains monotone the entire time, slightly muffled by her mask.

(Scarecrow) "...Do I scare you as much as the scarecrow in this film, S/O?"

(S/O) "Um...Not really, you're a lot cuter.-"

Her eyes glanced over to S/O, noticing that they weren't teasing, mostly due to being afraid.

She finds amusement in their terror, but doesn't make a comment on their compliment.

(Scarecrow) "That is obvious."

(S/O) "UWAGH!?"

Scarecrow is held even tighter, making her sigh. Why are humans like this?

M16 just smirks when S/O asks her to watch a horror movie with them.

(M16A1) "Don't worry, I'm so bad that not even any monster will come near me!"

She puffs her chest out in pride when S/O finds comfort in her arms.

(M16A1) "Psh, I could beat the hell out of that blue demon."

(S/O) "B-But that's a supernatural ghost! You can't shoot ghosts!"

(M16A1) "I can sure try!"

She has the biggest smile on her face, just getting to enjoy this moment with S/O.

She's not really affected by the scares in the movie, just finding it funny more than anything.

G11 would be fast asleep if S/O didn't wake her up from their screaming.

The entire time, she is held like a teddy bear in S/O's arms, making her slightly annoyed.

(G11) "Loud..."

(S/O) "How can you sleep through that screaming and bloodshed?!"

(G11) "...It's not real."

(S/O) "B-BUT IT LOOKS SO REAL!"

(G11) "...Hm...I'm going back to sleep..."

She drools on their arms while S/O is never ever letting go of G11, for less romantic reasons this time around.

Not that she minded entirely, since it was comfortable.

Until S/O screamed and shook her awake, making her eyes groggily open before shutting again.

HK416 obliges S/O in watching horror movies.

After all, nothing like having the best T-Doll protect them, even from something as mundane as a film.

She only gets scared, because S/O screamed directly next to her.

(HK416) "GAH! God damn-why are you so loud?!"

(S/O) "S-Sorry, it just scared me!"

She rolls her eyes when she feels S/O get closer to her. A slight blush came to her cheeks as she muttered something under her breath.

(HK416) "If you were going to piss yourself, why are we doing this?"

(S/O) "I...I thought I could look braver if I could watch this with you here..."

(HK416) "Heh, some job you're doing."

She's going to lord it over her S/O that she wasn't scared once from the movie.

Until the final jumpscare made her recoil into S/O's arms, turning the tables.

watching Kristen deal with school and stuff and deal with Cassandra makes me slightly uncomfortable. not in a bad way but in a way that I relate to it a bit too much and it's a bit too real. i too had extreme trouble with school and I also have issues with pushing important people away when trying to focus on myself and it ruins a lot of my relations. I relate to Kristen too much in the worst ways and that hits closer to home than I like. I love Kristen but man. Too close

hii hello me too anon me too… this is another sort of appearance headcanon, but i think that adaine and aelwyn mirror and oppose each other in their appearances from freshman year to junior year in a way that’s beautiful and lovely but also tragic and heartbreaking..

freshman year:

aelwyn is thin, always dresses up, perfectly straight platinum blond hair down to her mid back and perfect makeup both to accentuate her appearance and also cover up any possible flaws. this is important both in an “abernant family” sense and also because of the work she’s doing for kalvaxus/kalina/the nightmare king - her persona needs to be irreproachable.

adaine, on the other hand, is chubby and freckly and covered in acne, her short dirty blond hair has unbecoming (to her family, anyway) streaks of brown in it, she has her big circle glasses and her ill-fitting hudol uniform. she’s awkward and nervous and childishly mean where aelwyn is polished and beautiful and wickedly cruel, at least until the house party fight and her arrest, when we see her frazzled (and see her roots coming in!)

sophomore year:

adaine is coming into her own! she has her own clothes, she has boggy, she wears her (still smudgy) glasses with more confidence. her hair is a bit longer, it curls a bit at the ends the way aelwyn’s never did. her acne is not so much clearing up as solidifying (i have a specific thing with adaine’s acne scars turning into a four-pointed star on her forehead at the end of fhfy lmk if you want to see it and i’ll doodle it!). she’s altogether more confident and more righteous and by the end of it she has a SWORD.

aelwyn, meanwhile, has been non-stop crawling in an orb for the better part of a year (<- ask me about this too i have Thoughts.). she has been unable to take care of herself. her hair is loooong, down to her waist and matted to hell. it’s only about 3/4ths blonde at this point as her roots grow out more and more. she’s exhausted, she’s unfocused, she’s unwell, she’s unhealthily thin from months of malnourishment. and even when that version of her is replaced, the physical effects of the orb still remain. i think while in the nightmare forest things get caught in her hair all the time and she just lets it - she’s completely given up on taking care of herself or maintaining her appearance at all.

and junior year:

aelwyn cuts her hair! goodbye, blonde. now she’s got brown or black hair and her brown eyes :) she still has permanent damage from sophomore year (i’m so serious ask me about this) but she’s healing as much as she can and learning to live around what injuries won’t heal. she’s stopped using as much makeup, so her acne actually shows! & to adaine, the mean curve of her mouth doesn’t seem cruel so much as affectionate, now. as she’s healing she gains weight, for now just up to where she was in freshman year but more in the future :)

adaine’s hair is longer than ever, at just past her shoulder blades, and as she settles into the role of oracle, it whitens more and more. her eyes get bluer and lighter, too, and her forehead acne scars and fades and fully appears as that four pointed star, glowing faintly whenever she uses divination magic. in contrast to aelwyn, she’s gotten taller and a bit thinner as the last of her baby fat fades.

so in the end we have an junior year adaine that looks similar to freshman year aelwyn, and a junior year aelwyn that’s similar to freshman year adaine. explodes into a million pieces

I am 1000% invested in everything going on with Kristen Applebees and I think she might be my favorite character in a cast made up of favorite characters.

Am I concerned about Cassandra and her continued existence in the face of Kristen's distance? Yes. Is Kalina being back both awesome and a bit concerning? Also yes. Do I wanna see her more with Bucky ABSOLUTELY. There is just...SO much possibility and interesting stuff going on with Kristen. Chaos is no longer cute, and it's gonna be great to watch everything unfold.

Also Adine's story is gonna be great to watch too, because...money having to deal with the expenses of life. God. She's so relatable.

Man am I SO glad I speedran Sophomore Year to the best of my ability.

This is me live blogging bc I need to get thoughts out also would love fandom friends full spoilers bellow the cut just so no one accidentally reads anything they don’t want to this will be long

I have wanted most if not all of Zac's and Murph's shirts this season

I still have issues with the multiclass system but also no school thing has made the most sense in universe

I believe you and that's why I'm not saying anything is SUCH a trouble friend mood

BRENANS FACE WHEN KALINA SAYS I'M NOT BAD ANYMORE OH LORDS

the whole Kalina/Cassandra/Kristen scene is so nerve wrecking and interesting and once again I can talk so much about this topic and I know I have critized Kristen's approach but that's bc honestly I do have issue w it despite understanding it but it does make for an interesting arc and with this conversation it does seem like she believes in this domain of faith on the unknown. I will at some point talk more about from the point of someone who also left a culty religious thing but was still expected to perform similarly once out of it but my thoughts are still not the most organized

that being said I do not trust kalina and i do love cassandra

when you're in the dark I'm there holding your hand why am i crying

not kvx still being a thing lmao so Brennan

oh I just love how complicated but absolutely Bill Seacaster is the whole trust thing, the money going to the nemesees, there being a whole department, honestly that's a department I'd work for it's basically spy and gossip stuff

grinding for xp is so much weirder and terrible imo in this context also should be less effective bc like lbr experience is important like thinking on your feet etc like yes they are probably equal level and Brenan will play them well but they should absolutely not be as good as the bad kids at actual adventuring

listen I am so emo about gorgu's storyline like it's just no thoughts just feels and all of them

listen i don't do character builds but it does not sound to me like artificer and barbarian are THAT ill fitted, like yes the require different focus levels and types but they are also USED in different moments, nothing is stopping Gorgug from using his down time to come up with gadgets that work WITH his strenght and dex and rage and then use reckless abandon in battles. I think even th solar lasso is very much an example of that because it uses his strenghts, he's realing it in with atheltics checks iirc or how his shoes have jump like yes absolutely a challenge and not the most obvious but people are acting like it's impossible when it absolutely isn't

Re: Porter vs Jace suspicious vibes -- I think I'm at the point in the season where I'm doubting EVERYTHING. Like, Gorgug only heard Jace, he didn't see anything, didn't do any checks/etc about the encounter. I think I'm just too deep into the "is the a red herring?" and "is this just the Rat Grinders (or someone else) flat out manipulating things" paranoia to take that one encounter at face value. If it's really Jace then I can't wait to learn more, but I just feel like he's too much of a background, blank slate for it to have been him all along. So glad I'm not at the table because I am NOT smart enough to figure these mysteries out

See I've been thinking about this and like I DONT know but also I feel like there's something bigger than the ratgrinders at work here?? Idk why but like they CANNOT be orchestrating all this- something real bad is happening at the school and I think it goes beyond aguefort just leaving the stove on. And like what was Jace talking about with Kalina that time. What's going on with the man like why is he vice principal in the first place tbh???? The chill sorcery teacher???? I also just think it'd be hysterical if it's been Jace the whole time while Fig was running after Porter. Just for a laugh

And yeah same I'd be at that table just no thoughts head empty this is too difficult

My Top 5 Favorite Seasons of Dimension 20

Before I start, these are all great and they could alternate depending on my mood, especially the top three. I'm also watching Unsleeping City for the first time right now (im sorry. i know it's great, i just never got around to watching it because i was rewatching Fantasy High for the 10th time) so that's why it's not on the list.

Also, there is a poll at the end to see what everyone's favorite is out of these 5 choices and whichever wins I'm going to rewatch.

5. Misfits and Magic. My personal favorite of the shorter seasons (6-8 episodes). I loved all the cast members, they were all amazing but it just felt very rushed for me? Like, throw in a fifth episode for me just for the sake of pacing. The Tri-Wizard Tournament thing came out of nowhere and I think the pacing would've worked if they lead with the fact the Magical Misfits had to prove themselves to stay (and they had to do it too). I know the Headmistress was trying to blindsight them but anyone else could've mentioned it. Other than that, this was amazing. I love this and am trying to get my mom to watch it with me because she loves the books that shall not be named

4. Fantasy High Season One. It was really good and I love all of the Bad Kids so much it's not even funny. Bill Seacaster and Jawbone are my favorite NPCs in any TTRPG show ever and I love Fabian, Riz and Fig so much My main thing was the fight scenes. Fight scenes every other episode was a lot for me, someone who hates combat in my actual games of TTRPGS. I'm glad Brennan paced it so fight scenes were only every couple of episodes afterward, it made them feel more heavy and exciting that way.

3. The Seven. This season feels so underrated for some reason? No one ever talks about it, I never see fanart for it like I see the others on this list. All six Heroic Highschoolers did such a great job bringing their characters and teen struggles to life, it made me feel every single emotion at once. Two problems with this season though: One, no one played Zelda which I'm willing to forgive since they were playing it safe with covid regulations. Number two though is how much Sam Nightingale hogged screen time. Don't get me wrong, I love Sephie so much and she really made this season great, but I can't help but feel like she just got more attention that could've gone to other members of the Seven. Maybe it's the fact she got more one on one scenes since she was always talking to Zelda who was played by Brennan? At times it just felt like the Sam show and not an adventure about The Seven. But everyone go rewatch this though. I think I'm the only person who's rewatched it since it came out and I've rewatched it at least six times.

2. A Court of Fey and Flowers. Literally a perfect season. It has my personal favorite cast, amazing characters, and one of the best blends of humor and emotions a season of Dimension 20 could have. My only trouble is that parts of it don't have the rewatchability the other seasons have with all the secrets and rumors. I do still cry at Hob's confession though, even after the fourth time.

1. Fantasy High: Sophomore Year. I think this is one of, if not the best, seasons they have ever done. You get so much world-building for Spyre compared to other campaigns, you already know the characters so you spend more time fleshing them out and meeting new amazing side characters, like Ayda and Kalina, or fleshing out ones we already know, like Sandra-Lynn and Cathilda. I still openly sob every single one of the Bad Kid's troubles and I love them so much. Give me a season of the Bad Kids and The Seven, Brennan!

So, now that we're done, which is the best season out of these? Are there other The Seven lovers out there? IDK, VOTE!

Dreams Preview - D20 Gift Exchange

A quick little preview of the first scene of my D20 gift exchange fic! The full thing (which is getting some edits and an honest-to-god beta reading) will be posted (and who it is for revealed) sometime between the 24th and the 31st but I'm an impatient giver so it's almost certainly going to be the 24th.

This is, among other things, a full Fantasy High class swap AU. I am genuinely really curious for everyone's guesses on what everyone will be even though I am giving absolutely 0 information on anyone other than Riz in this preview. :D

Half of Riz Gukgak's world had been ripped away out of nowhere. Dad had been busy, always, all of Riz's life. His busy was busy in a different way than Mom's was, where she might be out late and working around the clock to prove herself but was a phone call away in an emergency. Dad might be gone for weeks or months at a time between when he could come home. Still, he always thought his father was invincible. That he'd be able to defeat anyone who tried to harm him, and return to sweep Riz up into a hug afterwards, however long that might be.

Until they'd gotten word that he would not be home, would not be hugging them, and that it was just Riz and his Mom against the world now.

It left a frozen hole in Riz's chest, that the invincibility had turned out to not be true. That Solace wasn't even willing to acknowledge publicly that his dad had worked for them was even worse, like being spat on while bleeding.

His mom hadn't been able to take much time from work, and with no body there wasn't much of a funeral either. Today, there wasn't even Penny to babysit; he didn't really NEED her there, of course, but it was lonely with her absent and his mom busy.

He'd busied himself with reading some of his favorite detective stories, well-worn books in a series his dad had introduced him to.

"Hey, kid." A voice came, from just behind him. He whirled around, and standing there was a Tabaxi woman, with black fur and the facial features of a housecat.

"Aaahh! Intruder!" He yelled, even though he knew nobody ever checked on their neighbors in the Strongtower Luxury Apartments they lived in, even as he went for where he knew the gun safe was.

"Hey, no, calm down kid. I'm not here to hurt you. I'm not even really here at all, exactly. Just try to touch me?" The woman said, leaning down and offering her hand out to him. He reached out to take it and.. went right through, waving his hand back and forth through hers. He stared up at her, eyes wide.

"Are you an illusion?" He thought he knew what to do about wizards, but he was also only ten.

"Not exactly. I'm. Hmm, how to describe it? Let's just say I'm a servant of a god. Think of me as a messenger, or an angel, I guess. A god that your father worked for, and he asked for me to check in on you. Said you hadn't been sleeping much, that you weren't taking his death very well. He was worried. My name's Kalina." She said, watching him, her tail flicking behind her.

But Riz squinted at her, and he couldn't help but accuse. "My dad didn't work for a god. He worked for Solace. I never heard him talk about any gods."

Kalina nodded. "Yes, that's what he had to say, and he did work for Solace. He just also worked for the Sleeping God. She's unfairly not very well regarded by most people, so he had to keep that part quiet. I suggest you do, too. But is there anything you want me to pass on to him? Or, and this is just a suggestion, but you could start sleeping again and then you'd at least be able to see him in dreams. Those are my god's domain - and his god's, too, of course."

Riz squinted, trying to read if she was lying like the cool detectives in his stories could do, but a promise like that was something he just could not pass on. "…Can I really see him in dreams?"

"Of course, kid. You could even learn some control of it, to see him more often, if you really wanted to." Kalina promised. "Just go to bed tonight and take a full night's sleep, for his sake and yours."

week 4

start concepting creature designs with previous critique in mind.

Rember i am going to use (sucessful) properties as inspiration to create a new and orignal design thats intersting.

with the use of refrences found on google (NON AI) i practiced more anatomy and this time some flat rendering to practice texturing like meat, mucles, feathers and fur

a Utah raptor, a not Golden retriever (horse + lemur and skinned animal insp), a not Border collie (pterosaur + fetus/raw chicken insp)

wanted to still give the Utah raptor a shot because they are incredible animals and i would love to make one with feathery coat and all but i suppose I'll do that in my free time.

for the not a bordercollie(black and white "dog") I took inspiration from creepy pastas like suggested, i looked to classics like "The Rake" and smiledog.jpg (the husky version) which scared me to death as a kid. Though those were more in the background, main influences came from "The Thing"(1982). i wante dit to be off but not so much to emidiatly tell its wrong, just a slight feeling of unease. i dislocated the neck and set it far too high up, extended the corners of its mouth too far back, gave it hand like paws and made it skinny. though i kept the body pretty dog like i felt like it was too clearly off especially the sharp eyes though collies often have very piercing light eyes.

after that i expanded on the idea with the golden retriever as i wanted a more family friendly looking dog, one you wouldnt expect to be a danger but again something being clearly off while still inviting. same inspirations of The Thing and smile dog.jpg (red version this time) and also "Annihilation"(2018) this time. The people yearn for body horror(recent spike in attention on franchises like "The thing" and "Fear and Hunger" body horror : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRIkWHo1SJY a recent 50 minute video with 3.5 million views on fear and hunger)

i also thought about doing a nod to annalog horror but felt that that specific type of eyes would defeat my original intent of creating a whole new intersting creature not seen before. the eyes are over done as they are found in many analog projects such as "local 68", "The Walten files", "The Mandela Catalog" and "Smile tapes", its a cute nod but not fit in this context.

i chose a horse/canid mix skull to poke out from under the dogs skin as i felt it would be spooky. it looks cool but after finsing the concept i realized that horse, ungulate and dog/predatory mamal skulls are also a common trope in horror, think of Annihalation again and "The Ritual" as well as others that i cant recall at the moment. as well as the welsh tradition of Mari Lwyd

putting that aside, i had given a second stage to the retriever instead of just having the dog stand up. though i still liked that idea, i decided to also make a second stage for the collie with the new information i had gathered from making the retriever. i wanted the new form to be stranger more thing like and less mamalian, just giving a bird tounge to a horse head didnt do the job. i took inspiration from pterasaurs as my friend had said that they thought they were so unsetteling and weird while watching "Prehistoric Planet". thier skulls are weird and almost alien and thier arms have odd proportions. i also took inspiration from the beasts from The Quiet Place again as they also have these odd body plans. i gave it the look of raw chicken or a fetus and eyes like those of a dead cow just to bump up the weird factor.

when show casing these the client suggested trying some other deisgns.

i was planning on refining the creature, he didnt really state what kind of "different stuff" he was looking for but kalina wanted to give designing a creature a shot so i would have time to refine these designs into one next week. Kalina is currently working on a design that is like the video that diego showed and also a design based on dutch mythology? We are already four weeks in, other groups had started development and we would need a lot more time to make a detailed sculpt and animate.

aditional cartoony dragon like creatures just to practice creature design, based on the descriptions of a snellygaster, an american cryptid (I made in the second week to fit the magic show theme from Kalina but it fits best here)

[07.11.2022 - JUST KNOW THAT IF YOU HIDE, IT DOESN'T GO AWAY]

Why did I leave this little piece (peace?) of mind alone for such a long time.

My horoscope keeps telling me I have trouble with my social life and routine, and that is so true. And it kinda feels like I have absolutely no control over it, I swear, I just keep waking up every day with the same feeling - in a haze, annoyed, isolated from the world. It feels like no one understands what I am going through, because I can't really put it into words and tell anyone about it, but also I don't really understand what everyone around me is going through.

And it hurts so much, to be alone - I depend on having people around me after all, it nurtures me and saves me. I keep reaching out, forcing myself into these social situations and hoping for positive experiences to build up my enthusiasm, and it turns out completely mentally draining and deathly exhausting every time.

Having things to do gives me a lot of energy and purpose - until one day it turns out to be the hardest chore in the world and makes me want to scream from frustration.

I wanna sleep, but I feel restless and anxious, I wanna do stuff to feel productive and alive and I feel so tired I can't think.

I don't know if it's my lifestyle that's at fault, if I really, desperately need therapy because it's something bigger than me, or if it's just a matter of taking more medication because it's my brain chemistry and there's nothing much I can do about that.

I hope my trip makes me happy and is not an anxiety-filled chore. I'm scared shitless that it will and I will have to face it in a foreign country, with a foreign person who doesn't understand.

I really, really want to end this on a good note, how does one do that?

I used to always (and by that I mean, a couple months ago) be able to find the good lessons in the hard situations, now everything is just scary and sad.

I hope I will be able to sleep this one off too.

im getting a little too in my family feels today and so INSTEAD of feeling those im just going to ramble for a second about why i fucking love paladin!aelwyn because. im. just like this i guess im coping leave me alone

cw for discussions of child abuse, maladaptive coping, drugs and alcohol, self harm, destructive tendencies, basically everything we see in canon and the implications

aelwyn is ... SO interesting to me because for as much of her interiority as we see, as much of her as we think we understand, as much as i could ramble about her character for hours, we know ALMOST NOTHING about her in actuality?? (besides ... one key thing)

(this is like 2k and probably incoherent someone please stop me)

okay. listen. almost everything we see aelwyn do in s1 is maladaptive rebellion against her parents and home life. the drinking, the drugs, the partying, perhaps some of kalvaxus (though i dont think we fully understand how much of that was forced on her as well, kalina WAS watching her when she was talking to adaine about it). you can say like, oh aelwyn is a party animal, she's impulsive, she makes risky decisions, she's bitchy and rude, and its like. okay but IS SHE ACTUALLY. because under her parents thumb she had an EXTREMELY limited amount of freedom, and usually when people are suffering from very little control over their life, they WILL act destructively over the tiny bit they can, either harming themselves or their environment or people lower than them in the pecking order, because in a way, that feels like a reclamation of autonomy. saying "you have so much power over me but can you stop me from hurting myself and destroying what you havent managed to claim yet?". its just like, kind of what human brains do and frequently has little to do with a persons actual personality or impulses, its just. desperate brains trying to control SOMETHING because autonomy is a fundamental human need and when thats taken away we get. very bad off. (this is one big reason eating disorders are SO common with abused kids.) so i think a lot of the s1 aelwyn we see is like. this is a very desperate, abused teenager "acting out" in the only way it is possibly somewhat safe for her to do so because, on a psychological level, the self destruction is weirdly the only emotional tether and its either this or just dissociate all the time (something we do see she has problems with in canon)

and yes, she did treat adaine horribly in s1. she fully did. obviously what we get in canon is what happens but a moment thats interesting to me is in episode 1 where adaine has attacked aelwyn several times, who either does nothing or just bounces it back, when she says "i never cast spells at you" and siobhan immediately retcons it and says "yes you do, all the time" (i havent gone back and watched this bit so i might be wording this wrong). obviously its an improv show and the canon is built between performers as they go, but that was interesting to me. that brennan hadnt intended for her to have fought back in that way. she definitely feeds into the emotional abuse from their parents and participates in all the toxicity there, but we know in canon that she did that because of overwhelming fear and self preservation. and that her self hatred because of it just fed back into the cycle and made her feel like she wasnt good enough to even try to break free from it. this is very common in golden child/scapegoat sibling relationships where the golden child SEES what the parents are capable of and becomes a participant in the abuse out of fear for their own standing. in any way siding with the scapegoat child not only directs abuse at themselves as well, but frequently makes things WORSE for the scapegoat because the parents will take out the challenge to their power on them even more. so, if aelwyn DID ever try to defend or help adaine when they were small, she would have VERY QUICKLY learned that made things worse for everyone. and just. sectioned that part of her brain off, as she's done with so many other things. (and i dont think im reading too much into the forest scene with the abernants to say their parents were VERY QUICK to turn abuse towards aelwyn if she stepped out of line even a little. like, you dont flinch when a hand moves unless. you know. dont need to say it just something to think about. as far as we saw in canon, she had done everything they asked of her leading up to the forest, and we DONT KNOW what happened in it but we do know brennan specifically called out how in broken spirits she was when adaine was summoned, even though they did the ritual to avoid all of the nightmare bullshit)

(the house party is literally a whole separate post but i think its fair to point out that 1) she was super under the influence when that was happening which DEFINITELY is in no way an excuse for her behavior but worth remembering when trying to analyze that 2) her losing that fight did canonically have DRASTIC consequences for her and even if she didnt know exactly how that was going to turn out, i think she knew how bad it might be. and she did not know adaine or any of the bad kids were going to be there in the first place)

all that said, it feels in some ways counterproductive to say that aelwyn is an extremely devoted and protective person (yes we're getting to the paladin shit i know i've been rambling a while) but i think that thats strangely ALL WE ACTUALLY KNOW ABOUT HER. because we've established that her self-destructive and abusive behavior in s1 is almost entirely psychologically scripted for her by her parents, we dont know how much of her villain shit in s1 was LITERALLY UNDER THREAT OF DEATH because we know at least killing the oracle was and we dont know how much of the rest of it was mandated by either her parents or kalina other than that she probably was under orders not to tell adaine the truth, and we know participating in all of this caused extreme self loathing in her that she refused to show to anybody and was too terrified to act on in any way

so, like. what does that actually leave us?

here's what we do know about aelwyn:

- of all the schools of magic, she went into abjuration

- the entire bbeg plan from season 1 hinged on aelwyn's complete faith that her level 1 sister was the most prodigious diviner in the world

- right after (?) the house party, she locked her memories where only adaine could find it with a note basically saying "theres so much bad blood between us but i know only you could find this"

- she desperately wanted to protect adaine and the fact that she was too afraid to do so made her hate herself (and her knowing that adaine now knows this is the turning point in their relationship)

- despite everything, even in the nmk forest, she still loved her parents

- the SECOND she is shown genuine love and affection and care from adaine, and adaine says whatever you do, i am here with you, all her actions from there forward are just about protecting adaine from their father, very nearly at the cost of her own life

- with what she probably thought were her last words (and would have been if adaine hadnt given her the tincture), all she wanted to communicate was how to help adaine and the bad kids, and how despite everything she had always believed in her

- at five levels of exhaustion, unconscious, she used her first spell slot after nine months of torture to build a shield around adaine

NOW we get to paladin!aelwyn. because, once everything is stripped away, the abuse and the control and the maladaption and the threats and the torture, EVERYTHING we ACTUALLY can glean about aelwyn's personality and inner core is that she's protective and devoted. and of course classes arent locked by personality, but that just screams paladin to me. its her WHOLE THING. adaine even says "wizards dont have heals, we dont care about other people" and of COURSE that isnt true for either of them, but? mechanically? aelwyn chose the wizard school that DID let her protect, and DID let her help, but i dont think, at this point, going forward, thats really going to be enough for her (and we could also talk about the parallels between them, how often adaine uses her portents to help other people)

i think a lot of the different reads on aelwyn come from this fundamental disconnect between her actions and displayed personality vs who she actually is and what she actually wants. and i think there are very different interpretations of what thats going to look like for her going forward. but i think, for a girl who's most hated characteristic about herself was her self preservation at the detriment of others, her perceived selfishness, and her fear ... isn't choosing to be braver and more selfless and more protective and shedding that self-preserving instinct for the betterment of others ... and MECHANICALLY being able to act on all those things ... the logical next step? i think its going to be a LONG TIME before aelwyn can love herself, but what other way is there to try? if adaine loves her, and adaine believes she can be better, isnt being better because she trusts adaine kind of a form of self love? saying, i dont believe in myself, but i believe in the person who believes in me, and maybe, in a roundabout way, thats the same thing. she was never able to TRY to be better before, because trying to improve even a little, even when people arent watching, when a harmful force has so much power over you and your actions ... like, the mental dissonance is honestly TOO much to even try, thats WAY more terrifying than letting yourself be bad, to the point where thats psychologically impossible for a lot of people. but now she actually has space and freedom and CHOICE and she CAN embrace the instincts she always had to shove down, she CAN be the person she knows her sister needed her to be

i dont know, i think theres an inherent love letter to yourself in wanting to be better and wanting to improve, even if you justify it by saying its for someone else. and now aelwyn actually CAN improve, and thats probably going to be extremely awkward and scary and there will be set backs and backslides for sure. but. i dont know. i think she wants to make up for lost time. because she never wanted the time to be lost in the first place. and if a protector is who she always wanted to be, whats stopping her from being that now?

on Aelwyn Abernant, the Reformed Villain Squad, and redeeming teenage antagonists

an analysis on antagonist character development in Fantasy High. spoilers through sophomore year and (mildly so) the most recent roll20 oneshot. essay under the cut bc i am very long winded

the turnaround with Aelwyn in s2 is handled so well i cant get over it. she was such a major antagonist in the first season and just. despicable. she had no pathos. we hated this bitchy older sister who tried to kill Adaine and her friends and raise an evil dragon, and when she gets knocked on her ass and thrown in jail, we cheer.

and then s2 fucking starts saying “hey she’s in jail still if you’d like to look into that” and pursuing that thread ends up being almost as comedic an idea as it is a reluctant one; it’s also quickly shunted to the background as soon as more pressing leads present themselves, to the point where we almost forget about her until Adaine is kidnapped and then the first time you see her it’s just. viscerally upsetting.

she’s bad. she did evil. she got what she deserved.

but she already got what she deserved. last season.

she got her ass handed to her by a bunch of 14 year olds including her little sister (how embarrassing!). her plans were thwarted. she got punched in the face and made fun of. she already got her punishment.

it just……immediately registers as over-the-top Wrong to be told “hey, remember that antagonist you beat last season? she’s still being punished for that, except it’s way worse than just going to mumple.”

and there’s that reminder that like…this is a teenager. a child. who has been manipulated and abused. which is a really fascinating look at this character we used to see pretty much unilaterally as a one dimensional bitchy villain.

i mean we got a more in depth look at Penelope’s and Biz’s motivations in s1 (Penelope being the popular rich girl sorceress obviously hungry for power and the alllure of the high school clout that is being prom queen, but also we know that her having to turn on her best friend Sam Nightingale as part of the scheme was something she was reluctant and not happy to do; and Biz being that predatory incel creeper type dude besides just a nerd with computers and a lack of social graces). and they were as much willingly active in the plot as Aelwyn was. yet in s1 they really never do bother to explore Aelwyn’s motivations. i remember after watching s1 but before s2 that was one of my biggest lingering questions: why tf was Aelwyn involved?

well. she was manipulated and abused. her terrible parents raised her in an awful environment that conditioned her to Listen and Obey and Behave and Be Perfect, and then Kalina helped cinch the noose around her neck with threats and coersion into the KVS Kaper and the NMK crown debacle. she doesn’t freely choose any of it; she’s coerced, manipulated, abused.

and she already got justifiably punished for her bad actions in s1. the torture is almost literal overkill. it’s just……there’s this immediate turnaround in sympathy and view of the character. on first watch, it’s viscerally upsetting to see her getting so brutally punished for actions she already faced consequences for, and on rewatch, it makes your skin crawl to know she’s being tortured for terrible things she had little choice in carrying out. and tortured by some of the very same people who coerced her to behave terribly in the first place, to add insult to injury.

and it’s still fucking frustrating when they rescue her and her memory gets reset and she goes back to her parents because it’s like “well shit, she’s evil again, and we just wasted all that effort for nothing” but it’s also sad cause we know she’s running back to her abusers and she isn’t happy about it but doesn’t feel like she has a choice. and it’s sadder still that what eventually inevitably gets her to turn to good for good (i.e. away from her parents) is just. a full dissociative mental breakdown.

(but then she survives and it’s gonna be good!!! until Adaine dies in her fucking arms. which is. almost funny. she’s been through so much shit and that isn’t something that Brennan would have just. preplanned. like a written in plot point. no, that was just an unpredictable consequence of the battle. what a juicy fucking moment. she’s been through All That Shit™️ and has finally turned to fight for good and her sister just fully dies in front of her. yeowch)

and she turns out okay in the end. she comes out the other side alive and whole and supported by her sister and her friends, with the hope of a future and recovery. there is an acknowledgement that A) she can and will grow from her mistakes and damage, B) it’s going to be really hard, and C) the post-s2 one shots both prove that she’s doing okay now. hell, she has a whole squad now of other former-teenage-villains-turned-good-guys. she has friends now, Ragh and Zayn, with common ground, and a secret handshake and everything. they’ve all grown from the mistakes of their past into better, happier, healthier people

and about Zayn and Ragh. we’ve seen a lot of characters, protagonist and antagonist, teenage and adult, PC and NPC do some really fucked up shit and get punished for it. but why do they get happy endings? why are Aelwyn, Ragh, and Zayn the only members of the RVS and not someone else like Biz or Penelope or Dayne?

well, the latter two are dead by then; but then again, Biz and Ragh were also killed by the Bad Kids in s1, and subsequently resurrected. (Zayn died too, but was neither killed nor revived at the Bad Kids’ hands, so i’ll get to him in a sec.) and there are plenty of adult antagonists the Bad Kids face who are killed and left that way by the Bad Kids without second thought: Johnny Spells, Coach Daybreak, Captain Wicklaw, the Abernant parents (presuming Arianwen doesn’t survive in the forest for very long, which i doubt). why do some characters get second chances while others don’t?

in the case of Zayn, his death was pretty much out of the Bad Kids’ hands, and they later found out he was manipulated by Daybreak into being bad anyway because of his sad living situation. he was a pretty minor antagonist in the scheme of things, and when we re-meet him as a ghost in the s1 epilogue, he’s pretty obviously remorseful for his actions. and dying seems like a steep enough punishment to me for the shit he did to contribute to the KVX caper; returning as a ghost, free from the trappings of his unfortunate living life, he now has the room and freedom to grow into a better person.

in the cases of Daybreak, Spells, Wicklaw, and the Abernant parents: these are bad people who should know better. these are fully grown adults who actively choose to do evil. whether they think it’s the right thing to do or not (in Daybreak’s case), whether they think it will benefit them and don’t care about anyone else (in the Abernants’ case), or whether they don’t care much at all and are just doing shit because they feel like it (in the cases of Spells and Wicklaw), these are all adults who consciously make the decision to do terrible things and hurt other people. of course Johnny Spells, who is generally a punk thief and thug, is not on the same level of bad as Angwyn, who kidnaps and tortures his own daughters for political gain, but the point remains. these fuckers should know better. they’re grown ups. they had their chances to be good and they chose not to heed them. their minds are set on bad actions and they are a continued danger to other people as long as they are alive. when they die, the Bad Kids do their damndest to make sure it stays that way.

now, in the cases of Penelope and Dayne: these are teenagers who actively chose to participate in an evil plot. Penelope, Dayne, and Biz were all fully cognizant of what they were doing trying to raise KVX back to his former power. why? well, to some extent, we can only speculate. i suspect Penelope was just one of those Regina George bitches who is rich and popular and powerful and obsessed with power and popularity within high school as if that’s the end-all-be-all of existence (which, like, when you’re currently in high school, is a somewhat understandable worldview i think). Dayne being her boyfriend and a musclehead jock probably falls into a similar line of thinking. they are actively and willingly trying to cause harm, and teenager or not, must be stopped. they’re killed, anyway, during the Climactic Battle™️ anyhow; it’s not like the Bad Kids were going to gain anything at that point by keeping them alive.

now, Biz: Biz is the creepy Nice Guy incel type, sees woman as a prize he deserves to win, yadda yadda. he does, like Penelope and Dayne, actively choose to help KVX. there might be something to be said about his motivation the Bad Kids discover after the arcade battle by detecting his thoughts (that being to upload the captured maidens from the palimpsests to “call the shots” himself) is an altered memory; whether this was his original motivation from the start or not, i’m not sure. but the Bad Kids do kill him – and then resurrect him for important, time-sensitive information. and they beat it out of him – he gets two of his fucking fingers blown off. and Riz reattaches them once they have their info, and they realize his memory is altered. of course, the Bad Kids don’t know at this point that the altered memory was something he, Penelope, and Aelwyn had planned and agreed on and done to themselves, but this points to something important in my opinion: the Bad Kids, and the narrative/show as a whole by extension, acknowledge that external manipulation affects how guilty someone is in a crime.

which brings us to Ragh. Ragh, introduced from episode 1 as the meathead jock. Ragh the archetypical one-dimensional high school bully. Ragh who works with the harvestmen in effort to (ostensibly) end the world/provoke international war. Ragh, whose low intelligence but high loyalty and internalized homophobia led him to be fully swayed and blindly led by his coach and captain, who have actively chosen to do evil. Ragh who is killed in combat by the Bad Kids and resurrected for information, not Daybreak. Ragh, who the Bad Kids realize was probably not aware of exactly what he was being made to do and how bad it really was. Ragh, who by their kindness in sparing his life and directing him on a better path, becomes a well-rounded character and an active ally to the Bad Kids during and after prom, an invaluable companion during their quest in sophomore year, and overall a really good friend and person.

(it might also be worth considering the case of Jawbone here, too, who started out a very minor antagonist in a fight but ended up becoming a major NPC because the Bad Kids talked to him, found out he came from an unfortunate situation and set of circumstances, and showed him kindness in offering the school guidance counselor position, a kindness that isn’t really owed but given anyway and ends up changing his entire life for good.)

and then, Aelwyn, whose case is already discussed above. so, why is the RVS what it is, why them but not others?

if you’re familiar with Avatar: the Last Airbender, you’re probably familiar with Zuko’s character arc, and how it’s often lauded as a masterful example of developing a villain into a hero over the course of a narrative. what makes Zuko’s arc so well done and exceptional is that he starts out as a kid in a bad situation under the influence of bad adults seeking to do bad deeds, but he later realizes the error of those ways, actively removes himself from that situation despite the difficulty and danger in doing so, goes through a lot of shit and reflects on his past mistakes and learns from them, and then actively chooses to fight for good in the end with the help of close, trusted friends, found family.

this, i believe, is the same in the case of Fantasy High and its treatment of the RVS. its members, like Zuko, are all teenagers who came from shitty situations and were manipulated by evil adults to do bad. they are punished for their bad actions, and they learn from their errors and mistakes. with the kindness and help of good people, friends and chosen family, they are able to escape their abusers and bad situations and grow into their own people. and they actively choose to improve themselves with that help and fight for good.

Fantasy High, through the arcs of Jawbone, Zayn, Ragh, and especially Aelwyn, asserts that it is not your fault if you come from a bad situation and are forced to behave badly as a result. it does not pretend that you are absolved of any responsibility for those actions; quite the opposite, as even though they were externally manipulated into their evil actions, all of those mentioned characters face tangible consequences for their actions and later express remorse for their mistakes. but Fantasy High also asserts that even if you have made great mistakes in your past, even if you came from a bad situation beyond your control, even if you were manipulated and abused, with care and love and support and a hell of a lot of work and effort, you can improve your situation and find good, happiness, peace, you can thrive. evil adults who should know better don’t get redeemed. teenagers who aren’t coerced but actively choose evil don’t get redeemed. but abused kids deserve another shot at happiness. with enough work, and some love and help along the way, they can get there, even from the lowest imaginable point, from rock fucking buttom. it’s possible.
