Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
my second contribution to the binary stars zine.
sadly the fic, WHICH IS RLY GOOD, never got posted [long story, not mine to tell ;u;] but this was a telepath!keith/blind!shiro AU. basically keith is a captured BoM, and is sent to the arena in chains to be executed by a beast, but then a blind galra is thrown in to the arena was well, with a weapon. keith is able to convince him they can work together and using his telepathic link, shiro is able to defeat the beast.
afterward, they are thrown together more often in the arena and over time keith learns shiro is actually a human who has been experimented on and altered heavily. he also ends up teaching him about galra culture and how to navigate some of the wierd shit galra go thru [since shiro is experiencing a lot of galra instincts lol].
meanwhile the BoM are working on freeing keith, but keith will not leave without shiro :')
so in this scene, we have keith tracing coordinates on shiro's back, in hopes that he will be able to use them to escape. i do hope viper posts this fic one day but if not, just know it was rly good and liek the perfect slowburn.
extras under the cut!
so as i keep saying this was a rly good fic. i had like 5 diff scenes i rly wanted to draw but i realized i was NOT going to be able to fit any of them into only 3 pages lol… that didn't stop me from TRYING more than once tho…
attempt #1, 3 pics:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
this scene is them bathing [PLATONICALLY] after a round in the arena. keith is lamenting about shiro geting hurt due to keith's reckless fighitng style leaking into shiro thru the mind meld, and thinks about how shiro still moves like he has his human body too, which shiro picks up on thanks to the mind link [which is something of a habit at this point lol]. shiro is angsting about the fact he actually dosen't know the extent of what has been done to him thanks to the injury that blinded him, and after asking to see how he looked as a human, keith ends up reassuring him that he's still a cutie lol.
the page with the dialogue only is when i realized there was no way i was fitting that scene into 3 pages lol.
attempt #2:
Tumblr media
this scene is basically near the start to the fic. keith is brought in to the arena and chained to a pylon. he hears a bunch of rly loud monster noises and pounding at the door across the arena and is like, wow i am actually fucked 8D then shiro is brought in and thrown to the ground, along with a weapon. keith watches him try to feel around for the weapon and realizes he's blind, then calls out to him. shiro immediately goes into attack mode but keith is able to convince him that they can be allies, and briefly explains he's a telepath before melding their minds so that shiro can see through his eyes, and after a bit of clumsiness they are able to beat the beast this way :D
Tumblr media Tumblr media
my designs for the boys. i have unclothed versions too that show off all their markings and scars but i feel like that would get the post flagged so these will have to do lol. i did post them on twitter tho, if you wanna bother looking there. also yes, this design is rly similar to the other contribution i did for this zine, which is because i rly like the idea of keith having these specific markings LOL. this is p much my official go to glara!keith design.
Tumblr media
just two lil chibi guys
Tumblr media
i actually finished this with shading, but for the life of me cannot find it, so old phone pic it is. this is post-fic, after shiro joins the bom. [so uh not so shocking spoiler, they both survive and escape lol]

WIBTA if I posted my art from a zine early?
I (23nb) joined a zine for a semi obscure 2000s manga/anime as a page artist with two of my friends. I enjoy this media but I don't really consider myself in the fandom, I only joined because one of my aforementioned friends is a huge fan of it and the other friend is also a casual enjoyer and we thought it would be fun if we all did a zine together.
However.
Most zines have a timeline of around 9-10 months from beginning to publishing but this one's been in production for almost 2 years. I've been in a few zines and this one has the worst organization I've ever seen in any project. The timeline on the discord only covered the first 5 months and had no estimate for how long the production would be, but a year and a half for publishing is pretty unheard of. The only check-in for progress that I remember didn't even require sending in your piece, you just had to say if you were finished or not and only a handful of the 30ish people on the discord responded lmao. Both of my friends ghosted at this point and the Singular mod (there might be two mods. I can't really tell) didn't dm them to see if they still wanted to participate or anything. Since there is only one person doing everything me and a few others have asked if they need any help and every time the mod(s) say that they're fine. every month or two someone will ask how the production is going and the mod will answer, and then another month goes by and the cycle repeats. I think the zine has finally gone into its “preorder interest check” stage (so not the actual preorder) but judging by how long everything takes i estimate that it'll be another 2 months at least before it actually goes into preorder. Its also never been clear if this is a free zine or if the sales will be donated to charity or distributed among the contributors. Since there's Allegedly going to be a physical copy it's gotta at least use the sales money to pay for production and shipping costs, but I have no idea if I'll be compensated with a physical copy or any money, especially if I do the thing that I might be TA for.
So here's my actual question. WIBTA if I posted the art I made for the zine before the mod says it's ok to do so? A big part of zine etiquette is that you do not post the final piece until the zine is finished, and the repercussions for someone who does range from a mod dming them to take it down or being kicked out of the zine entirely or in the absolute worst case, called out and blacklisted in the fandom and zine circles (I don't think anything that serious will happen to me but I have anxiety so I'm always imagining the worst thing) Most of the people on Tumblr in this fandom are kind of annoying fandom mom millennial types so I don't really want to deal with any possible backlash from them lol. If I just posted my art on Instagram idk if any of them would see it, but they Definitely would if I posted on Tumblr since the zine originated on there and it's such a small tag. I'm also so frustrated with the experience I kind of want to write something cunty in the description about how it's a zine piece for a zine that probably will never come out but I know that's just being petty and would probably invite drama. Also since I drew this thing a year and a half ago it's a little busted looking so I might redraw parts of it, so posting it would still be kinda shitty but it would technically be a different piece from the original one I submitted to the zine.
What are these acronyms?

Announcing: PreZine, a fanzine for the Precure series!
Hello, tumblr!
I don't wanna waste anyone's time, so I'll cut to the chase: I'm trying to put together a Precure fanzine with community contribution. You can find a submission form here, with plenty of detail about what I'm looking for. If you want more detail, keep reading.
My name's Nick, and I'm a huge fan of the Precure series. Each season varies in quality—there are some I love almost completely, some that disappointed me immensely, and a lot somewhere in between. I've watched on my own, introduced friends and family to the show, have the soundtracks on my phone to listen to, I've bought figures and other merch while visiting Japan... I like it a lot.
I've never actually interacted much with the fandom, though. I'm awkward when it comes to joining new communities, and tend to lurk more than I actively contribute. Recently, though, I had an idea. See, I love analyzing things I like. And things I don't like. And Precure is full of both of those things. I've also been mildly interested in webzine culture and the idea of creating some of my own. The writing is fun, and I've wanted to get better at layout work, so doing a little Precure fanzine could be quite a lot of fun!
But... it's not really "interacting" with the community if I'm just writing my own thoughts and throwing them at you, telling you to read them. I'd rather get folks involved! Details can be found further down, but the gist of what I'm doing here is that I want to gather volunteers for a free fanzine I'll be publishing. It might wind up being a single issue, or keep going for some time—we'll just have to see how things go. The zine will be freely available and not behind a paywall, but I will have a ko-fi set up to take donations. Proceeds will go towards paying contributors first, before I touch any part of them. I don't expect a high volume of donations or anything, but whatever I do get I want to go towards the continued success of the project, and that means making an attempt to fairly compensate those who contribute.
To that end, any contribution—whether it be an article, piece of visual media (art, cosplay, etc.), or something else I decide would be a good fit—will provisionally be worth $50. If we get enough donations on Ko-fi to fully pay those tabs, then they will be fully paid. If we get less, then each month I'll divvy up the money based on percentages of contribution, up until (hopefully) all contributors are fully paid.
To be clear, once again: the zine will be completely free, and I have no budget for this at the moment, so any and all payment will be dependent on folks donating us money. I strongly desire to pay every contributor, but at the time being it's best to view this as a volunteer passion project with payment as a distant possibility.
Now, what are we looking for? Well, all of the information below will also be found on the linked form for submission pitches, but...
Articles
I've already written first drafts of two articles, which I've linked as samples down below. What you write doesn't have to be in the same style or vein as mine, but at least that can give you a bit of an idea of what's guaranteed to be included already. Currently, what I'm looking for specifically are:
Characters that have influenced you
Musical analysis
Original Precure fiction
If you have ideas for things not on this list, you can also pitch those within the form.
Visual Media
I have no art at the moment. As this is a zine about a property I do not own, I am absolutely going to avoid using official art. I can decorate with other images I have the rights to, but to give it that actual Precure aesthetic, having visual media submissions would help a lot.
For the time being, I'm looking for:
Drawings
Cosplay photos
As with the articles, you can also pitch stuff not on this list.
Graphic Design
This isn't on the form, but if you've got any graphic design experience... well, you can see by looking at our Twitter or the avatar for this blog that graphic design isn't my passion. I think I do okay when it comes to layouts, but covers/avatars/timeline pics... not so much. PM me, here or on Twitter, if you wanna take a crack at addressing any of our graphic design needs. You will be compensated for your time in the same way as all other contributors.
So, if you're interested in contributing, here is the submission form once again. You can also check out my two samples, found here. They will be edited, so this isn't their final form, but they are roughly what I'm contributing in terms of writing.
And lastly, our Ko-fi can be found here.
If you have any questions I haven't addressed here or in the form, ask away!

Q&A with Darth Frodo
Hey, everyone! Two years ago, this project started as a way to reach out to authors who had left some beloved projects unfinished, mostly to reach out to them and see how they were doing, show them appreciation, and see if they needed any support in case they wanted to finish their projects or just wanted to have fun sharing behind the scenes information and tips through a Q&A.
As a part of bringing this project half-back to life, I would like to present the first Q&A of this project, in this case with the one and only @darthfrodophantom, who returned after almost 10 years to the phandom to share the ending for "A Secret Uncovered".
Special thanks to @dp-marvel94 for the questions submitted!
If you want to find out other amazing authors participating, make sure to check out this recommendation list for the project!
❇️ About Darth Frodo ❇️
[AO3] [FFN] A multi-fandom writer who has also written for Danny Phantom since the show was still on air, Darth Frodo joined the phandom classics early in the Fanfiction.Net era with beloved works such as "Tortured Truth" (2006) and "A Secret Uncovered" (First published on 2006). The latter was left on standby as life happened, but Darth's desire to finish the story was always close to her heart.
Her love for identity shenanigans and the philosophical analysis behind characters also took her to explore other ideas and stories back in the day, but also recently as she returned to the phandom for events such as Ectoberhaunt or the DP Reality Trip AU Zine, for which she published delightful new adventures.
Now that she has rewritten all of her first vision for "A Secret Uncovered" and added an incredible ending and epilogue, we reached out to Darth with a few questions...
❇️ Q&A ❇️
Q: What inspired you to write your story ("A Secret Uncovered")?
Darth: Not sure if you’ve caught on to this based on pretty much everything I write, but I love identity reveal fics. I love the awkward tension that happens right before, during, and after the reveal. I love the moment where you just don’t know how it’s going to turn out. And I love watching the aftermath of the characters struggling to adjust. I really wanted to write an identity reveal fic on a huge level that involved everyone finding out, and it kinda went from there.
Q: Who is your favorite character to write and why?
Darth: I feel like I have to say Danny because he’s pretty much my POV of choice. His internal monologues are so fun to dive into because he’s witty and snarky, but he can also be so clueless sometimes. I love putting him into different scenarios and watching him struggle through them. But if I had to pick a character outside of Danny, I’d have to go with Jazz. I just feel like I get her. She’s the mom friend and the big sister who ‘s an overachiever, and I love that. Jazz can connect pretty obscure dots, be the emotional comfort, and a voice of reason, which are so helpful.
Q. Are there any characters or types of scenes (action, dialogue, ect) that you struggle to write?
Darth: I feel like I struggle the most with transitions. How do we move from one scene to the next and conveying what happened in the downtime we don’t cover? How do we give the readers a sense of the emotional or logistical events that happened without actually having to spell it all out, but also not make it too exposition heavy? I want to include the details, but I don’t want to bog people down with exposition and passive tenses. It’s contrary to that “show don’t tell” tenet of writing, but it’s also acknowledging that from an editing perspective, you can’t show every minute. (Of course this is now all you're going to pay attention to when reading my writing lol)
Q. This one is based on a screenshot I saw on tumblr of a tweet saying "writing a fic consists of having one scene you want to write and scrambling to come up with an entire plot just so you can write one scene." If this applies to your story, what is THAT SCENE for your fic?
Darth: I actually did! I literally pictured the scene where Danny walks into school that first day after his secret has been revealed and everyone stares at him and whispers about him and crowds around him. When I first thought of doing an “everyone finds out” identity reveal, this was the first scene that popped into my head, and everything else spun from that concept.
Thank you so much Darth for the time to reply to these questions.
To anyone reading, we'll bring back the Q&A part of this project before we reach the 20th Danny Phantom Anniversary, as a way to hear from beloved writers and celebrate our phandom.
Stay tuned!

(copying this over from my twitter)
pd101 japan s3 mdh steal list + where i want various trainees to go
yoshida hana would do well at starship
yamazaki mitsuki will probably quit music but in my head she could be in a ninemuses-esque group with ando chiharu, koyama mana, tanaka yuuki
i follow a talent scout/trainer who's actively trying to get moro anon a kpop job so
motohashi meika mdh steal list first inductee
i dont care for mizukami rimika. she should start a yt channel if she hasn't already
matsushita miyu isn't for me but maybe she could join the ninemuses reup
fujimoto ayaka was well-liked enough to have a future somewhere. idk where, but somewhere
hatta mena has some issues but i do think she can still debut somewhere
i have no idea where nakano kokona can go but that's baby sister so i want good things for her. maybe the chanmina show? that's the only japanese survival show in the works that i can think of, plus she suits the vibe
i was convinced that takahashi hina and abe nagomi were gonna be 12 & 13 and be frontrunners for the lapone spin off group but they usually dont bother with people who don't make the finale...my non fact based opinion is that a group with these two and a couple others who were eliminated would still do better than a group of the finalists. as it stands, hina should try for the next korean season of pd101, and nagomi will have a future in jpop, even though the idea of splitting them hurts my head.
i loved takagi mayu but her brief foray into the entertainment world is over i fear
sutani yurara would probably hate it conceptually but im zapping her with my ninemuses ray. sorry.
i don't know what to do with sasaki tsukushi but she needs a win and bad. chanmina show? if keiko and rinon weren't fighting for top 11 id say debut them as a trio, i enjoyed their team's balance on bijin a lot
saito serina...i really like her but idk what to do with her. she has great idol potential and fits kbeauty standards more than jpop standards...maybe the next korean season of produce? she's like 45% mdh steal list but that's my bias talking
kano kurihara ninemuses beam
i kind of love kitazume sakura, she's cute but extremely intense & she tries to hide it by simply not saying anything but it still shines through. i think she's great. produce 101 korea just to see, she shouts instead of sings but honestly she gives izone
kikukawa aki...she's fun but she gives flop group, like majors or something tbh
no idea how nogizaka works but kawabata ranka should aim for something like that
kamio ayano reminds me so much of zhang zining it's crazy. if she had a storyline i think she would've debuted but she just never caught on. she would be a great gg member but im not sure where
oda aruha my beloved disappointment. if she had held on a lil longer she couldnt made lapone trainee status but alas. i could see her just working in dance moving forward
okabe nana could be scouted by someone, maybe akb idk
uchiyama rin might not have a future in music but it's kind of a shame since she has such a nice lower register
ando yui my little sister...idk what to do with her so im gonna blindly put her in mdh jpn ngg and say it makes sense because having 2 yui's would be cute
aramaki joa's push was too obvious and she paid the price, but there's no way she's not being kept on as a lapone trainee or getting offers, finals or not. i actually think her vibe sort of suits tripleS although im not expecting anyone from this show to join
i quite liked akiyama ema, something about her reminded me of jihyo but she never fully caught the audience's attention so unfortunately she might just dance from here on out
to be very real i hope suzu fans dont panic vote her into the top 11. she definitely has a future at lapone.
honestly some company is gonna take half the finalists and throw them in a group together regardless of fit so given they dont make top 11 but disregarding that...
sorry i want shizuku to go back to opera
momoka should go on chanmina's show and then transition into an iri copy, she'd actually do sooooo well with that but if she wants a gg...my ninemuses team is only at 7 rn
haruka will get an offer somewhere
koto & rio lapone, kagura too but i want her for the gg im building in my head
in sum:
discount nine muses: yamazaki mitsuki, ando chiharu, koyama mana, tanaka yuuki, sutani yurara, kurihara kano, kamio ayano, kenmotsu nano, kato kagura
mdh: motohashi meika
sorta mdh but not really: saito serina, ando yui, aramaki joa
final top 11 in my brain: momona, miu, rinon, ran ayane, tsuzumi, kokona, kokoro, rin, keiko, and rino (im delusional)

Since you‘ve been into the fandom space due to hxh and jjk…
Which is very valid btw, sometimes it’s takes a while to jump into a community, especially since fandoms are such a mixed bag.
…Have you made some friends/mutuals that you never expected to be friends/mutuals with?
When I joined the HxH fandom was quite insular. There were some very visible big name fans who just engaged with one another. And when you look at fic recs here for HxH you still get the echos of that. You will see certain names repeated over and over again. Actually having someone rec my fics recently made me cry because if my friend Subdee wasn't on a given day on tumblr often when I posted my writing here no one would even leave like on it. I had mutuals literally scroll past my writing and reblog from me fics or ao3 links authored by the popular HxH and not even leave a courtesy like on my fic that was posted around the same time as the reblog.
And this was the situation several years after I joined. For a long time I felt I won't make any friends in the fandom. I actually made my first friends in the fandom when I participated in 2018 HxH big bang. After that event I befriended some people, and I even became acquaintances with some of the popular HxH blogs, even mutuals with some. So yeah, all the friends I made in the fandom were unexpected.
And honestly the HxH fandom here on tumblr is really cool and that's mostly thanks to @shalnarkonice who's the true hero of the fandom. Shal runs the hxhbbs, reverse bb, several other events and a thriving discord server, we made a zine together as in I pitched the idea to Shal and she just fucking put a team together. I had never expected that I would do a huge year long project with Shal. But generally Shal probably brings at least half the fans here together, facilitates so many friendships. HxH fandom really lucked out that it has Shal.
In the JJK fandom on the other hand I hadn't expected to make any friends because the JJK fandom is a fucking dumpster fire, generally, and here in particular, though from what I've heart twitter is worse. Compared to HxH which is a fandom in hibernation, JJK is alive and vibrant. But unlike the HxH fandom, it's full of people who hate read the manga, people who are in the fandom to shit on it, to post their bad faith takes. Or people who just want to write that they don't understand what's going on, lol. Or sometimes just write takes to prove that they really didn't pay attention to anything in the manga. Or just post thirst, and like.. I like some thirst, like this nice dessert to the fandom experience. In JJK it's the main course and it's just too much for me. And there is some art, but mostly of characters I care little about. And it's completely disorganised, there is not Shal who gives the fandom structure so that you can engage with others at this low emotional stakes level by just doing stuff next to each other in an event and get closer if you notice that you vibe together.
No, you have to do direct engagement and that's scary. But I found amazing people in it too. There's cursedvibes and his meta is so good, actually he's my subdee in the JJK fandom. They are both meta royalty plus they are just super neat to talk to in private about anything and everything. I also befriended the wonderful yuujispinkhair, and this is very much wow.

hi sci! i hope you don't mind me asking, but what was your education route like? and if you have any tips for work experience to support illustration?
hello anon! i really wish i had a wealth of advice on this - but i'll talk a little bit about my experiences!
i was kind of the unofficial artist of my high school, actually - not that i ever explicitly volunteered but absolutely any time the school needed posters or graphic design or illustrations of any kind... "this looks like a job for sci." designed all the christmas cards, all the posters for all the school plays - even now, almost a decade later, they're still using my illustrations for like, education principles and for the student journals and everything. it's really cute.
Tumblr media
i think doing all those illustrations for my school was a real boost of confidence - i felt like i was practically a professional already, because my illustrations were already so widespread and seen, in people's day-to-day.
i studied art, media studies, english literature and drama at A-level - and went straight into university after to study animation (i've kind of always known i wanted to be an animator since i was a wee baby, it's always been my path)
youtube
while i was in uni i had a freelance gig at a daily newspaper - so i did these daily little illustrations that were kind of like little visual poems.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i was kind of lucky that a lot of little publication opportunities would arise for me because of my interest in translated literature and being kind of part of the british-iraqi community - so i got to do a lot of small publications - little translated books - even a magazine cover or two. i think, if you're part of communities it's always worth it to volunteer up your talents - even for free - create art to promote events, etc - it's so, so important as an illustrator to have eyes on your work. i know exposure doesn't pay the rent - but it does wonders for your confidence, and looks so, so good on the portfolio. posters - promotional material - publications - all of that stuff is so, so great. art for function, that's what will push illustrators forward, i think.
straight after graduating (well - with a year devoted to the job hunt) i entered the world of corporate animation! i mostly do after effects motion graphics - here's my groovy (and in need of updating) showreel!
youtube
i currently work as lead animator in a small corporate film studio! i storyboard, i animate, i direct (sometimes live-action projects too!) - i love what i do. and because i'm quite active on social media, i've also landed a few pretty high-profile freelance gigs on top of it! for a time i posted lots of commute drawings and it caught the eye of someone at the bbc and f1 - which lead to a lot of really exciting jobs. so you really never know what's going to catch someone's eye and lead to opportunities. something small you did just to unwind might actually be just the spark someone was looking for. the number of times i've had someone point to some silly, small idea i threw out into the void for a giggle and they've said "that. i want that. and i'll pay you for it." everything you create has value. even if you can't quantify it just yet.
a lot of the time when i gain a bit of success or i land a job i always say "huh. i'm lucky." but actually - i work insanely hard. i'm almost constantly creating. i've been that way since i decided i was going to be an animator, and that was - well, i was like, 11 years old. i decided i was going to pick up the pencil and never put it down. (not saying that's a healthy way to be! but it's just the way i've been.)
i think the most valuable thing for an illustrator is to be seen. create a lot. share a lot. join art collectives - do art challenges - submit to publications and zines - pushing your art out there in front of eyeballs is the best place to start!

what are some ideas you've wanted to write but haven't had the opportunity to do so?
lotta ways to answer this question... i honestly don't know! because when i get an idea i tend to write at least a tiny snippet of it to get the vibe down, so I haven't "not" written most of my ideas.
in terms of ideas i WANT TO PUBLISH... i have a lot of stuff for my extant fics that I'm yet to finish, like some really fucking good Nepetaquest ideas (you have no idea how much love I have for Aradiabot), some ABOR stuff (I have been planning on an unexpected fic-to-fic crossover bonus chapter for YEARS), most if not all of Erijan... Erijan is the white whale, lmao, but some stuff from that project did manage to see the light of day (Invite Link, Escal8).
In terms of ideas I've had that I haven't written about AT ALL???
I honestly... If I haven't written about it, it's probably not a great idea!!!!!!! And if you wanna see stuff I write, either be my friend and get invited to my personal discord, head to the Nepetaquest 2022 Discord (linked in the adventure info on https://meow.mspfa.com) and check out my channel #front-gate, or join M^3's Homestuck fanauthor discord, which I'm sure she's linked a few places. I post pretty much everything I write to the #share-your-work channel over there.
Hmm
I'm honestly blanking. If I have an idea I turn it around into dialogue or a paragraph or two, or SOMETHING. I have a whole goddamn zine about this.
Yeah, idk! Kind of a lame answer.
If you wanna see snippets of ideas i never made into full fics (Jade Lalonde my beloved), check out the above --
OOOH. YEAH I NEVER WROTE ABOUT THE KIDSWAP VERY MUCH. I DID A DIALOGUE TEST FOR JADE LALONDE BUT THAT'S ABOUT IT.
Alright. That's my actual answer. I want to write about my kidswap AU (dave egbert, heir of time || jade lalonde, seer of space || rose strider, knight of light || j halley, witch of breath), but i don't know how to make a kidswap AU *interesting,* so I haven't actually written much of it at all. Just the tiny segment that's in the zine.

Feeling slightly better than i have been at this moment (hence being on Tumblr for more than a half second before my body goes 'hm, actually, that's too much. put the phone down or i make u throw up 🥰' as it has been all week since this back pain bullshit began
(more blathering abt this stuff and work and just. general life update as of this week below the cut)
But realised that's probably only bc:
-Housemate (who has been an absolute angel thru all of this and has looked after me better than my own mother ever has tbh), got me some Pedialyte style drinks, and I've made it thru nearly all of one today (a miracle bc the nausea has otherwise been constant even when the pain isn't as bad and has made eating more than like. broth and saltines and gummy edibles basically impossible)
-Im stoned, on a increasing rotation of meds (acetaminophen, ibuprofen, mucinex which it turns out has potential off label use for muscle spasms, as Housemate researched and found out, edibles, magnesium, and now ginger pills to help the nausea) all of which im grateful for but combined leave me feeling less in pain but a bit. idk. blah? brain foggy, more than usual? Tbh it's probably the pain making the brain fog, the pills just can't do anything for that and i don't fault them for that, but for a brain fog example, I've been trying to place an order for some local chocolates to ship to my mum for mother's day, and legit it's taken me ALL WEEK just to get the site open, to the shipping menu, and just today actually putting things in the cart, but I haven't managed to check out yet bc just getting the cart together that made me feel like i needed a nap. This post is the longest thing I've typed in days, and I'm struggling rn to keep going..But i started it, so we're finishing it, back spasm at a level 4 of pain be damned
-and im doing basically nothing aside from stretches (gentle yoga ones i already know the forms for, and some pilates gentle type things i remember from when mum joined that fad lol), using one of our wand vibes on my back (never had done before, they actually do work for that too! kinda fun to find out, just wish i hadn't found out like this!!), laying on a heating pad and wedge pillow, and trying to nap (bc the pain is worse at night so I've somehow been sleeping even worse than i usually tend to)while YT videos and/or the 1973 JCS plays on repeat.
I mention all this bc i work this weekend, and i don't want to have to call out for the first shift tonight. but like. if im struggling just to type this post up (nvm that i have my zine checkin to finish and send in as well, if Nads or anyone else from the group reads this pls know i will make sure i have it done by the due date! it's just been taking. longer, with this back pain mess), keeping my brain on track is difficult rn (as evidenced by...this entire post), and my back is starting to twinge up to a 3-4 overall already bc i let the heating pad turn off, thinking that maybe, just maybe, if I'm feeling okay enough to be on Tumblr then maybe that's a sign this is finally over, and my back is done making life miserable...
then maybe work isn't a great idea. but it scares me every time i have to call in (and I've tried not to unless i absolutely had to, but they're very particular abt ppl basically never calling out, so i know that even if they acknowledged i sounded as sick as i was, that doesn't mean this wouldn't be reason enough to fire me)
I just don't know what to do. i want to work. i want to make money. i also don't want to have to mute my mic bc my back spasms hard enough to make me vomit tho, and that's unfortunately still a very real possibility (spent entirely too much of this week throwing up from the pain tbh!!! not happy abt it, i do not like being sick like that, for any reason!!) The last reason makes me think calling out is the right thing. but. i have a few hours yet, so im gonna see how it goes, acknowledging that i probably do need to call out, whether i like it or not
(if for nothing else, to maybe be recovered for my first set of doubles on Sunday)

hi! though i adore the idea of an animatronics themed zine, i worry that you might face legal action by aaron fetcher, who as we all know is notoriously protective of the rae, even with games like rockafire replay that don't even profit monentarily, or even cec corp themselves, considering they didn't hesitate to send a cease and desist letter to the person who made reel to real. this zine is a really good idea, don't get me wrong, and id love to contribute, but the two biggest franchises have people who won't hesitate to strike something like this down, aaron fetcher especially, which makes me hesitant to join or watch the project too closely. hope this doesn't come off as mean or dismissive, just from a genuine place of worry
Hi! This is something I've considered already and TL;DR I can assure you that from a legal standpoint this is completely fine. The long answer:
Aaron never actually C+D'd Replay or issued a takedown on it, I've spoken to 64th and he confirmed to me Aaron literally just yelled at him until he gave up on the game. A lot of what happened with RR is because Aaron at the time had plans to make his own sim (which ofc fell through but y'know at the time) and he didn't want anyone else overshadowing his. His general stance on fan creations seems to be anything is fine as long as there's no profit made from it– and while our zine will cost money, it's for-charity, meaning no one working on it actually makes any money from it (honestly if anything I expect to have a bit of a hole in my wallet after this lol).
As for CEC, their stance seems to be about the same as Aaron's when it comes to fan works (see Reel to Real) – and they're also kinda a big company with way more important stuff on their radar than this. Similarly goes for Disney and their animatronics. Almost anything more obscure than these don't have any copyrights on their characters anymore (even some more well known stuff like Gulliver's HLB and Hannah Banana aren't owned by Aaron).
I understand the concern completely! Part of my job as the person behind this project is to research this stuff and at the very worst case scenario, take the blame and pick up the slack if any of these entities do happen to get upset about the zine. I can't claim to know absolutely everything about copyright law, but I am quite confident we've covered our tracks here.
I know I can't singlehandedly convince you (or anyone else with this concern) to apply, but I hope I can at least quell some anxiety!

Dead Space (Xbox 360)
Developed/Published by: EA Redwood Shores / EA Released: 13/10/2008 Completed: 27/10/2023 Completion: Beat it. Trophies / Achievements: 600/1000
I wanted to keep spooky season going, so I reached into an old, dusty cupboard, pulled out an antique tea chest covered in cobwebs, unlocked the chains that bound it and pulled out… a 2008 third-person shooter! Ooohhhhh, scaryyyyy! I didn’t even play the remake! Oooohhhhh!
Damn, this is 2008 as hell. Usually I’m thinking to myself, like “how much have graphics really changed since the Xbox 360 generation?” and then I play this and I’m like “Oh.”
(Which I actually think is mostly down to art direction, but that’s probably another conversation.)
I guess it’s just funny to go back to a major triple-A release of the era and see it’s, like, not open-world (it’s actually sectioned into levels!) and the different sort of derivative it manages to be. Set on a space station that’s been over-run with disturbing monsters made from the warped bodies of the dead, it’s *cough* quite clearly inspired by Event Horizon and Bioshock, with a central mind-bending twist that you’ll spend three-quarters of the game waiting to pay off because it’s so bloody obvious.
There’s some good to Dead Space. I think the combat system, which asks you to shoot the limbs off enemies to disable and kill them, using weapons with really nice, clear sights so you can aim successfully, is inspired. It’s a sensible length, too, clocking in at under 10 hours.
The problem with Dead Space is that there’s really only one kind of scare: the jump scare. Pretty much every encounter is either walking into a room and having an enemy jump out, or it’s doing something in the room and having… and enemy jump out. Or several enemies. Every enemy, also, pretty much just runs directly at you screaming, and with plentiful “stasis” (an ability that allows you to slow down enemies, making it easier to chop ‘em up) every battle I had basically devolved into me making my way into a corner and waiting for enemies to run towards me so I could dismember them.
So unfortunately Dead Space becomes really quite boring long before you’re done with it, so thank god it’s as short as it is. It’s possible you might invest in the story more than I did, but I found it a pretty ratty bag of cliché at least in 2023, and the game’s nod to puzzle solving is generally just dragging things around using your “kinesis” ability, which leads to what I consider the nadir of the game, the final level where you very… slowly… drag a huge monument around on conveyor belts. In fact the entire ending is a bit of a damp squib as you shoot weak points on a big boss that I wasn’t sure why I was fighting???
Pretty disappointing!
Will I ever play it again? I won’t play the remake, which sounds surprisingly faithful, and I think I might have a copy of the sequel or the third one lying around somewhere but I’m not enthusiastic about the idea.
Final Thought: Playing this got me thinking about Event Horizon, and here’s a couple of fun facts: one, apparently the film was inspired by Warhammer 40,000, with Wikipedia claiming "Fans consider Event Horizon to be an unofficial prequel to Warhammer 40,000, when humankind discovers the Warp and learns of its dangers the hard way." They do???

Creativity - Writing an Article
I've been preparing myself to write an Article for IB Zine.
Upon joining IB Zine, I've had two main ideas to write about when it comes to the creation of an article. The first idea was to write about the connection between translation and history based on the book „Dancing on Ropes” by Anna Aslanyan. My other idea was born through a conversation I had with my Grandfather about his brother - Ryszard Lech, which is the idea I have decided to go with.
Tumblr media
My family always joked about my 'artistic' nature, considering that most of my family - especially from my fathers side, which I've always been told that I am more alike to - is more focused on sciences, with most of them being in some way or another medical. I've always thought that I might be the "odd-one-out" from the family, but turns out that isn't quite the truth considering who my Uncle was.
The first time around I heard about my Uncle, were mostly through anecdotes about his chaotic life, or his character. It took me an embarrassingly long time to learn that actually a lot of the paintings decorating my family's houses walls were made by a person that was a part of my family. I've become fascinated with both his works and his creative process - which is rather methodical and crucial to further understand Ryszard Lech as a person.
To create my article I started out with reading everything there is written about him on a website that was created about him -https://www.ryszardlech.pl/ - as well as books I have been given by my parents. Unfortunately, I can not speak to him directly - unless I purchased an Ouija board - but I do have the chance of speaking to my Grandfather about his brother. This would also be interesting considering the information about him given on the website/books is mostly factual, however, I've wanted to get to know him from a more personal point of view. I have not yet managed to conduct the interview - although it would be more of an open conversation -yet, I have already set out a date and created a plan of what I wanted to ask.
Although my Uncle is mostly known for his 'pixelized' paintings, I did have the opportunity to check out his other, less known works, like sketches and linocuts to further my inquiry into who Ryszard Lech was.

Ward in Colour
Introducing Mary Ward’s newest student-run creative project
By Katrina Ross Rodriguez
Tumblr media
Ward in Colour Logo
The community at Mary Ward is overflowing with creativity, skill and artistic talent, with a new project being launched to give creatives a platform to showcase their work. Introducing Ward in Colour! A meeting was held during lunch on November 23rd, 2022 to formally introduce the club to those interested. Lanay Combs, a grade 11 student and one of the creators of Ward in Colour, was interviewed regarding the initiative. They shared their ideas and spoke on behalf of all of the new club’s creators.
Katrina R: What is Ward in Colour? How would you describe it to readers?
Lanay C: The best way I could describe it is, essentially, an art club for all kinds of creatives including visual artists, digital and graphic designers, people into fashion, makeup, photography, and writing. It is a digital zine that we will be releasing seasonally and the purpose of the club is to get the creatives of the school community together and to get those creative juices flowing, because I know that showcasing your art might not be accessible, so with Ward in Colour we hope to build a space for that kind of expression.
Katrina R: What inspired you initially to make Ward in Colour?
Lanay C: During the summer, my friends and I thought, “what if Mary Ward had its own magazine?” We had this 5 hour long conversation just spit-balling ideas for this but decided that it might be too ambitious. We then thought, “what if we just did a small seasonal issued zine that everyone could be a part of and you were always able to hop onto?”
Katrina R: What are some of your sources of inspiration?
Lanay C: Coming to Ward, what attracted me was actually the art room. I was looking around at some of the projects they were doing and I was super fascinated by the things that the artists at Mary Ward were capable of. I wanted to be a part of that in my own right, as well as enable other people to be a part of that as well. Not everyone is in an art class, not everyone is able to pursue art as a career, but they are still passionate about art, so my main inspiration is the idea of inspiring others.
Katrina R: What do you think your personal contributions to the zine will be?
Lanay C: I think my contributions will go as far as helping other people properly get what they want across in their creative vision. Of course, I want to have my own creative visions realized but my main priority is letting other people do that first.
Katrina R: What are your favourite artistic mediums and materials?
Lanay C: I love visual arts as well as digital art. I feel like I excel more at digital art simply because it’s easier and waste free but I love working hands on. I love collaging and cutting things out and creating mosaics of random trinkets of media to create a more cohesive image.
Katrina R: Where do you think you’d want Ward in Colour to go after you graduate?
Lanay C: Another motivation behind Ward in Colour my friends and I had was that portfolios are a big thing for people that want to get into the arts and we thought that having Ward in Colour would be great on a resume or portfolio, but before anything we just want to be able to express ourselves. The purpose of Ward in Colour isn’t to get famous, the point of it is to have a place to express ourselves and that’s the most important thing, the portfolios and the resumes come after. I think we just want to have fun!
Katrina R: Is there anything else you would like to say to readers prior to release of this project?
Lanay C: To the readers prior to the release of the first issue, we really hope you enjoy! Please do not feel like you have to remain a reader forever, you are always welcome to participate or to join. You don’t have to commit yourself fully but if you have even the inkling of an urge to participate in Ward in Colour, please do so. I’m a grade 11 student, I’m not here for that much longer so I’m going to try to do as much as I can with who I can, but we need you first. Sign up sheets are coming soon and I hope that you enjoy it!
Ward in Colour is a collaborative project created by Lanay Combs, Erin Montegrejo, Esther Antwi-Boasiako, Miqo Nimako, Jouie Palconit, Sherika Anthony, Mia Colavincenzo and Francine Martinez. The zine’s first release will be before Christmas break, with their debut title “Frost” being Christmas and New Year’s issue themed. More information can be found on the project’s Instagram @wardincolour or on its Google Classroom, with the code being: vlc5orc

Behind-the-scenes, August 1996
This meta rambling about the Cypher was posted last month on my Patreon. Join there if you'd like to help get more works like this, or my original novels, created.
There were a few reasons the Cypher ended up taking place in the 90s. I had considered setting it in the 80s. Ultimately, several things contributed to pushing it forward. Some of it was purely pragmatic from a fan culture aspect: the further you go in time, the more films have come out and the more things like anime have come over here. Other things were more of a writing preference. Culture changed a lot between the mid-80s and mid-90s. By the mid-90s, the Internet exists, but it isn't the primary avenue of communication or influence on the economy. Fan culture was having one of its big divides, with smaller print media and social groups not really being a part of the younger crowd who used the Internet to share their interests. There's also what I was personally familiar with. I didn't experience 80s fandom culture much myself. I definitely had a better idea of it by the mid/late 90s. I think fanzines themselves (in the sense I'm dealing with) tapered off as the Internet came to be, so pushing the Cypher forward to 1996 might be a bit far. But I was able to think of it as something that I could have seen, or wanted to write, if I was a little older at the time I started getting into fandom.
The format wasn't the only reason I wanted to be as far back as possible, while still having as much fandom culture/material as possible to be nostalgic about. I wanted something like an analog horror vibe for the backdrop of the plot. The Cypher is mono-medium, and it's not video, but it shares some of the vibe. I wanted to be far back enough to have a lack of cell phones, and definitely pre-social media. The funniest part was that when I settled on 1996 as a good balance between old and new, I actually asked myself: "Is that too recent for an analog horror vibe?" And it's not 80s, (so much analog horror is digital horror, anyway), but frankly it's far back enough to have a vibe. Malls were malls. Video rental was the jam. Games were blocky. So, sure, why not? (I'm old, I sigh to myself.)
And then there's the personal aspect. I know I mentioned what I myself could write. I find myself either borrowing from my experiences as a kid, or writing about things I saw in the world then. I might've been younger then than the cast of the Cypher, but  with access to older zines, it's been amazing to see how many people were out there then who loved different media in the same way I did, and who were out there having the same sorts of discussions then that I had later, through the Internet and with friends. The media experience of the Cypher is definitely colored by my later fandom, when I had better access to things I only read about or partially saw at the time. There were a lot of media that I only saw after-the-fact, but which were a large part of my friends' childhoods. Either way, it was fun to get to play with a time I remember, but to do it with the lens of someone who's been able to live more and speak more freely.
The local nature of the Cypher, and its eclectic contents, also stem from some of the APAs and more eclectic zine content. People really have just written what they want to. To a degree, these characters are, similarly, just writing for their own social crowd and themselves. The paper doesn't have to stick to fandom topics; it can include local interests, puzzles among their community, and local stuff that only really matters if you're from there (this of course gives me more worldbuilding and plot leeway).
Next time I think I'll muse more on the analog horror stuff, and how that ties into my locale (or its IRL counterpart) and other bits. I'm going to do some bits on specific elements of specific issues, but I don't know how much of that I can write up per-issue, so I may do several at once in a few months.
