Hi! It's me again.
In light of the upcoming Ultimate Black Panther 2024 coming out in Feb, "In the wake of Ultimate Invasion", in which Khonshu and Ra are doing things and then are the bad guys.... I thought it a good theme to explore Moon Knight in alternate universes. ....To which I actually know very little about. But I bet you know stuff!
I've seen Moon Knight explored in things like Arachknight (love that outfit) and alternate timelines where he's imagined in different outfits, but what about in actual Marvel time lines like the Ultimate universe or 2099 (which he is also going to be featured in briefly).
How much has he shown up in those lines and can they even be called Moon Knight or just some guys in a Moon outfit?
Thank you so much for sending this my way, because oh ho ho this is something I'm so excited to answer! :D You hit the nail on the head though in regard to how "Moon Knight" is only sometimes our beloved system of Jake, Marc, and Steven and other times it's more of a title. Interestingly, I've noticed anecdotally that many non-616 continuities choose to invent an entirely new character as opposed to doing an alternate interpretation of our favorite guy. A majority of the time, however, they still maintain key facets of the Moon Knight mantle (devotion to Khonshu, for example, being prevalent). I'll break down the major ones (and some of my favorites) under the cut, because there are some really great ones imo. :D
Ultimates (Earth-1610)
I started here not only because you mentioned it specifically, but also because it's the non-616 continuity with the most Moon Knight material and it's possibly the closest parallel to 616's Moon Knight.
Tumblr media
Ultimates Moon Knight appears in Ultimate Spider-Man (Vol. 1/2000), #79-80, #82-85, #107-110 and Ultimate Spider-Man Annual (Vol. 1/2006), #2.
He also makes some cameos in the Ultimate Fantastic Four (Vol. 1/2004), #52-53, Ultimate Origins (Vol. 1/2008), #5, and Cataclysm: The Ultimates' Last Stand (Vol. 1/2014), #5.
Sometimes I just think about this dude, because he's very recognizable as an analogue for 616!Marc Spector, but there are some major differences that receive frustratingly little expansion due to him only being a secondary character guest-appearing in a Spider-Man comic. One difference right off the bat is that it seems in this iteration the Marc and Steven identities are swapped, with Marc being the debonair millionaire frequently used as a cover identity and Steven as the scruffy operator.
Tumblr media
[Ultimate Spider-Man (Vol. 1/2000), #83.]
The other big change, in my opinion at least, appears to be an attempt at more purposefully incorporating in and acknowledging the system's DID, whereas 616 pretty notoriously meandered its way through "nah, they're just cover identities" to "he contracted 'multiple identities' after doing those cover identities Too Hard" (???? Yike?) to finally landing on something a bit more understanding and respectful. The success of 1610's attempt at mental health representation probably depends upon your opinion on Brian Michael Bendis as a writer. An honest attempt was made, but it's definitely not free of the now very dated term "multiple identity disorder" or of stereotypes, with one headmate being a little girl and the whole system being threatened by an encroaching "evil" alter developed as a cover identity (which happens to be "Ronin," another wild little element of this universe) and subsequently going off the rails.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Ultimate Spider-Man (Vol. 1/2000), #108.]
Markedly, I don't recall catching a reference to Khonshu during my read-through of these comics, which is inline with Ultimates' more "grounded" approach to characters, ig. In any case, almost all of 1610!Moon Knight's background is jampacked into a single panel (that consequently frustrates me to no end hahaha):
Tumblr media
[Ultimate Spider-Man (Vol. 1/2000), #108.]
While some of this makes sense for Ultimates' whole deal of updating characters (Gulf War vet and Navy SEAL being more relevant to the 2000's than the very 70's background of globe-trotting mercenary selling his services to any insurgency that will pay,,,,although I shall keep my opinions on SEALs to myself asldkfij), from what I recall, however, they NEVER bring up the fact that this guy is a failed super soldier ever again? Nor the Roxxon connection??? But he (or rather Ronin) does drive a bus into Peter Parker's high school, gets domed by Kingpin's goons, survives (naturally), and is quite helpful in the case to take down Kingpin, so there's that. He's also responsible for some of my favorite panels of all time.
Tumblr media
[Ultimate Spider-Man (Vol. 1/2000), #80.]
Tumblr media
[Ultimate End (Vol. 1/2015), #5]
(technically that last one's from Earth-61610, a fusion of Earth-616 and Earth-1610, but it's the panel I always think about whenever trying to parse out how Ultimates and the main continuity came together hahaha)
2099
The other continuity you mentioned by name and an interesting one because apparently there are multiple continuities associated with "2099." None of them have a "Marc Spector" (may that be because he's resting in peace after dying of old age aslkdfj), but there are some other options. Something that fascinates me though, is that none of these options come from Miguel O'Hara's home continuity of Earth-928 and most of them are women.
Moon Knight of Earth-96943
Tumblr media
I did a post on her character here and personally I think she's rather neat. She only really pops up in 2099: Manifest Destiny (Vol. 1/1998), #1, but she beats up opportunistic capitalists on the moon and tells the Watcher what's good, so again, I think she's pretty cool (and I love how all of her speech bubbles have crescent moons).
Tabitha, Moon Knight of Earth-TRN590
Tumblr media
[Spider-Man 2099 (Vol. 3/2015), #14]
Otherwise known as Tabby (!), this "2099" Moon Knight actually got to meet Miguel and appears in Spider-Man 2099 (Vol. 3/2015), #14-16 (similarly, I expand upon her character here). She's another case of a character fairly firmly relegated to the "supporting" category, but when she does get some panel time, it's a lot of fun, as she has that pretty classic Peter David wit and a big ol' sword that she uses to exorcise a demon out of Doctor Strange (and subsequently banishes it to the moon).
Tumblr media
[Spider-Man 2099 (Vol. 3/2015), #14]
Moon Knight of Earth-2099 (....not to be confused with Earth-928)
Tumblr media
[Spider-Man 2099: Exodus (Vol. 1/2022), #3.]
This one is an....exceedingly interesting case, more thoroughly detailed here. After making a one panel reference to the Moon Knight temple guardian of Earth-96943 (and implying she died RIP sounds fake but okay), Spider-Man 2099: Exodus (Vol. 1/2022), #3 and Spider-Man 2099: Exodus Omega (Vol. 1/2022), #1 establishes this new Moon Knight as the leader of a new team of Avengers. But you have to watch out, because this Moon Knight is also just straight up Khonshu animating a corpse.
Tumblr media
[Spider-Man 2099: Exodus (Vol. 1/2022), #3.]
Those times when the timeline got kind of screwy (so 616!Marc,,,,kind of????)
There are some instances where 616!Marc got caught up in those kinds of situations where everyone gets thrust into an alternate time line or a timeline that was erased for whatever reason, his involvement in which pretty much solely being due to him being an active Avenger at the time.
House of M (Earth-58163)
Marc is technically in House of M (Vol. 1/2006), #3-7, but he's only there to stand in the background of group shots wearing a fit so generic even I have worn it. BUT, however, it turns out House of M: Avengers (Vol. 1/2008), #1-5 fleshes out his character's background in this reality and explains why he gave up the iconic white threads.
Tumblr media
[House of M: Avengers (Vol. 1/2008), #2.]
Tumblr media
[House of M: Avengers (Vol. 1/2008), #1.]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[House of M: Avengers (Vol. 1/2008), #5.]
(imo, I mean, look I know it was the 2000's and simple/leather jacket "costumes" were in, but the reason provided was NOT good enough for putting him in the most boring fit possible, but that's just me alskdfj Further note, looks like I uuuuuh missed the House of M: Avengers comics on my initial readthrough so I shall probably loop back around to those some point soon)
Age of Ultron (Earth-61112)
Found in Avengers Assemble (Vol. 2/2012), #14AU and Age of Ultron (Vol. 1/2013), #2, #4-5, the mental health representation isn't always the greatest, but otherwise, there's a lot I'm fond of in these issues. Natasha Romanoff is much more firmly "the main character" with Marc supporting her, but you will definitely get no complaints on that on this here blog. This reality basically boils down to "Natasha and Marc are a criminally underrated duo that could probably destabilize juntas if they chose to do so" and it's great.

Other Continuities (Where Marc Actually Shows Up)
Earth-X (Earth-9997)
This one haunts me???? Because it's one of the earliest examples I can recall of really digging into the irony of a Jewish man serving an Egyptian god as well as artfully discussing that unique tension within Marc of "alive but only just/not really" AND gives Marlene some fascinating development....all within the pages of a special event the plot of which I honestly couldn't explain to you if I tried.
Tumblr media
[Universe X (Vol. 1/2000), #6.]
But if you want to check it for yourself (and see if your reading comprehension is better than mine hahaha), this Moon Knight shows up in Universe X (Vol. 1/2000), #0, #6-7, #10-11; Paradise X Special Edition (Vol. 1/2000), #1; Paradise X (Vol. 1/2000), #0 and #11; Paradise X: Devils (Vol. 1/2000), #1; Paradise X: A (Vol. 1/2000), #1; and Paradise X: X (Vol. 1/2000), #1 (and if you're wondering, yes, I did lose a few braincells typing all that out).....but this guy does get a cool color inverse suit!
Tumblr media
[Universe X (Vol. 1/2000), #6.]
Battleworld (Earth-51910)
Or at least, I'm pretty sure this is Marc although we only get the last name of Spector. Anyway, amidst the Beyonders’ and Doctor Doom’s shenanigans in Secret Wars Journal (Vol. 1/2015), #1, Spector here lost his faith in "Baroness Khonshu," but at least his design is dope as all get out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also, he's a werewolf.
Tumblr media
[Secret Wars Journal (Vol. 1/2015), #1.]
Heroes Reborn (Earth-21798)
The "Marc Spector" who is presented in Heroes Reborn (Vol. 2/2021), #5 and #7 as the sort of Hush and Two-Face to Darkhawk's Batman frankly sort of leaves a bad taste in my mouth, as he's straight up described as a "schizo who worshipped the moon" and is generally just a violent criminal who ends up in Ravencroft (...not great in the slightest, all around honestly). Accordingly, the only redeeming quality of this alternate is the DOPE costume he gets when he ends up on this continuity's equivalent of the Dark Avengers.
Tumblr media
[Heroes Reborn (Vol. 2/2021), #7.]
Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe Again (Earth-TRN664)
Oh goodness, please don't make me talk about this comic again; thinking about it Hurts Me. Fairly well executed but so incredibly tragic. Mr. Knight is fantastically sympathetic and a brilliant detective and it all ends horribly. If you want to read Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe Again (Vol. 1/2017), #1-3, godspeed.
Tumblr media
[Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe Again (Vol. 1/2017), #2.]
Other Moon Knight Variants
These are some honorable mentions that I'll just have to link my posts for, because I unfortunately have pretty much hit the image limit RIP.
Mariama Spector of Earth-818
Battleworld Frank Castle as Moon Knight
And finally, since I loved the phrase you used of "just some guys in a Moon outfit," I present the ultimate "just some guy in a Moon outfit":
Friggin "Moonwing" of Earth-9602
When Moon Knight got the Amalgam comics treatment, he got mashed up with Nightwing of all characters in Bruce Wayne: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. (Vol. 1/1996), #1, as detailed here. Basically, they just gave Dick Grayson a past in the CIA and DID, leaving the whole moon motif a bit of a mystery.
Tumblr media
(Amalgam Comics Trading Cards, #8.)
Naturally, there are some variants I didn't mention here. Moon Knight pops up in quite a few non-616 continuities, but most of the time he's just in the background of large group shots and/or action scenes and doesn't have any lines or contribute anything to the plot. Accordingly, I attempted to include just the iterations with the most material that were expressly from different timelines (which is why I didn't include all of the historical Moon Knights from the 2019 Moon Knight Annual or Moon Knight Ravonna who are also from Earth-616). But yeah! I hope this is of interest to someone out there or at least somewhat vaguely answered your question hahaha thanks again!

Hiiii! I normally see you around on the marcsteven tag a lot and I was wondering if you have any fic recs of them? I’m starving for content it’s been so long 😩 Any site is fine, but ao3 works best in my phone! /nf
Do I ever, anon :D (I'll keep this to fics under 500 or so kudos since I'm assuming you've already read the popular fics like Last Night I Watched Myself Sleep and Making Two Reflections into One)
Adjustments by Nagem is 12k, never got enough love imo, and is my favorite finished fic <3 If you don't mind a side of Marcstevenjake polycule, the sequel Waiting Room is always quite excellent too <3
If you don't mind separate bodies au's, I love the 4 part series And for the first time in all my life I Know I'm more than what I fear by dealthydan
Let me love you while the moon is still out by Lady_Clow is a hauntingly beautiful little fic.
If you don't mind ambiguous endings, I really liked the The Happy Ending by kimmy and Mkocuria. (the art at the end is delicious too <3)
come on, come on, darlin by above the ruins, is the sweetest little 5 things + 1 fic, especially if you love the moon boys using petnames with each other. Their second fic We can live right here (like a memory) is also quite good.
you'll wind me up or you'll wind up dead by opensoulsurgery
You Tried to Be a Hero by highkingpenny. 16k, no explicit sex really despite the rating, but I loved the banter between Marc and Steven (still crying over Marc calling Steven his little noodle boy)
If you haven't already, I'd also say check out anything marcsteven that's been written by the AO3 writers TheCarrot, usurp, lostmagician, gloss, pardillo, nakimochiku, It's_brilliant_thor, kika444, and snapdragonpop007. I'll read anything they write, and total, they make up probably half of my reading list anyways.
And if you don't mind WIPS (most of these update semi-regularly), Consider the Flowers (They Don't try to look right) by sacrificeplay and Narcissus in Blue by chashuu are two of the fics that gave me the most Moon knight brain worms. Fall Into Line by Yersifanel is a beast of a fic that hurts so good, What the Right Hand is Doing by ErinPtah has been really interesting so far (and you might consider checking out their Cover of Knight series if you like crossovers and headspace polycule fic), and if you're looking for angsty Hate to Love fic, friight just posted the first chapter for Love Song for a Deadman (i'm assuming you have but if you haven't, also definitely check out their completed beast of a slowburn fic The Measure of Things.)
Hopefully this helps at least a little bit, anon! Like you, I'm starved for any and all new content, i swear I've been refreshing the ao3 tab since last march. Feel free to look at my ao3 bookmarks as well, the first 6 pages are nearly all Marcsteven/Marcstevenjake fic, and I update as I reread fics and add them to my kindle.
(if anyone wants to add their recs or promote their own fic, feel free to add!)

20 questions for fic writers
I got tagged by @nocompromise-noregrets to answer questions about my fic, yay! Thank you, friend!
1. How many works do you have on Ao3?
49
2. What’s your total Ao3 word count?
610,514
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Right now just OFMD.
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
The Heart Asks Pleasure First (Captain America (Movies)), 886 Kudos
Leggy Blonde, you got it goin' on (Our Flag Means Death (TV)), 640 Kudos
If my Heart was a House (Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling), 612 Kudos
Uphill Both Ways in 5 Feet of Snow (Captain America (Movies)), 510 Kudos
Morning, Moon and Knight (Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling), 401 Kudos
…To be clear, this doesn’t really say anything useful. The CA fics have been accumulating kudos for almost 10 years and the HP fics for just about as long (and they were originally published to LJ and only moved to AO3 later), while Leggy Blonde has been up for less than 2 years. So ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ make of that what you will.
5. Do you respond to comments?
Yes, always. It may take me a bit, but look, if someone takes time to comment on my work I feel compelled to at least say thank you. The joy is in the moment of interaction, not in the hoarding of praise.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Probably The Fall of the House of Black. If you read the epilogue, that is.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Most if not all of my fics end happily and there’s a bunch that are mostly fun and fluff. But only Heartwood ends with a wedding. 😛
8. Do you get hate on fics?
No. I got one (1) terfy comment and one that was a bit douchey once, but I don’t think I have the reach to attract actual hate. Or I’ve gotten lucky so far, idk.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
For a long time I didn’t because I didn’t enjoy writing it. I’ve come to be a little more open to experimenting with it in recent years, occasionally challenged myself to lean into it a bit more, and I guess it feels like less of a bother now even if it’s still not my forte. So some of my stuff is either more softcore, or just completely smut-free.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
No. I only enjoy crossover scenarios when they happen spontaneously when chatting with friends in an unhinged “yes, and” arms race towards the most ludicrous possible outcome. I have no interest in crossover fanfic, neither reading nor writing it.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
No. But back in the 2000s I translated my first couple of fanfics that I wrote in a German speaking forum into English when I moved to a different space within the same fandom.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
@greaseonmymouth and I collaborated on a fanwork for a now extinct fandom in… 2009 or so? It was a true marvel, a thing of beauty, a magnificent stroke of genius. It is no longer associated with either of our names. But part of me still thinks I peaked there.
14. What’s your all time favorite ship?
Johnsquared. Quite possibly.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Unghhh the epic Cjizzy metal band AU. The epic eat pray love Johnsquared. I want to finish them so badly. I really do. But maybe I love them both too hard.
16. What are your writing strengths?
I’m really good and efficient at setups, outlines, and occasionally very funny with dialogue.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Writing sincere endings that I don’t hate.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
Idk man. Look. It depends. What are you trying to do here? Does a character canonically codeswitch? Fair. But do you speak the language in question or is it just gonna be basic tourist speak? Do you just wanna flex that you know languages that your readers might have to look up? Are you smug that you used google translate? Are you using other languages consistently throughout the fic in all instances, or are you just marking out one character as the non-native speaker? For a bit of ~local/ethnic flavour?
What I’m saying is “it’s complicated.”
Also. Eh. Idk. I wouldn’t do it in my own fic. I have seen some godawful incorrect German in fanfic that clearly came from google translate and that no native speaker would ever utter and I always wonder what the purpose of that is supposed to be. At times it’s jarring my incompatible within a limited narrator’s perspective. Obviously everyone can do whatever the hell they want in their own fic. I just don’t get the why of it most of the time I see it and I wonder if the writer ever bothered to ask themselves “why am I doing this?”
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Officially, on the internet? [redacted]
Before I knew fanfic on the internet was a thing? Star Wars
20. Favourite fic you’ve written?
Oh man, I can’t choose. Funnily, none of my top 5 kudosed fics would make the shortlist. But 5 that I’m very very fond of and that I really enjoyed the writing process of are:
Won from the void and formless infinite (Taboo, Godfrey/Cholmondeley M/F) 40 Kudos
The doubts that have surrounded me (OFMD, cjizzy F/F) 65 Kudos
Only by the Grace of the Sea (OFMD, Ed/Stede M/M) 270 Kudos
You, who stole my solitude (WWDITS, Vianton M/M) 155 Kudos
Something Brewing in the Discourses (JSAMN, Gatcombe/Tantony M/M) 10 Kudos
(Adding a kudos count to re-emphasise the point that they are a terrible metric for judging or comparing anything.)
I’m tagging… uhhh @greaseonmymouth @pudentilla @thebeautifulsoup and @emmyllou if you should happen to be in the mood.

Moon Knight Primer Part 2
Tumblr media
Moon Knight (1980) # 5 – 23
Prologue
Part I
Now that the series was well established, it was time for Moon Knight to find his footing as a hero, and that’s what the next 20 or so issues were about. Again, in a very, very weird twist -at least if you came to this series after seeing the TV Series, or even reading more modern Moon Knight comics, there was little to no supernatural stuff going on. It was mostly psychological. Yes, the System teamed up with Brother Voodoo and fought against zombies, and yes, Marc had originally faced a real werewolf, but after that? It was drugs, mobsters, and crazy dictators with nuclear bombs because in the 80’s it seemed that everyone could buy a nuclear bomb with not much problem. It was even easier than ebay.
But while the cases were pretty run of the mill for street heroes of the time, it was the moments where we saw the guys in their normal lives when we start to get a more complex look at everyone, and thus, some characters become… well, not as good as they started in paper.
Also, I must be honest. Originally when I read the comics -and reread them- I kinda skipped the long text explanations that were in some issues, for this part, issue 15. In that, Moench explains a bit of the evolution of Moon Knight, from the original “we need a moon themed villain for Werewolf at night” to the hero we now know, and to be fair, most of it is not really important or interesting for current Moon Knight (he was, for example, originally going to be named Moonblood) , but there is ONE point that makes it clear that, while he never actually states it -as he keeps talking about the Alters as multiple identities, mostly needed to make it logical that Moon Knight would have access to information of crimes- it is quite obvious he WAS writing a system, as he also mentions that he had just read the book Sybil when he created the guys.
He also points out something that I am sad that everyone seems to have forgotten since then: That Jake Lockley is the “Closest” to Moon Knight’s real personality -although I have no idea if he meant the way they behave or was using the outdated word for Alter. I wanted to mention this because it means that yeah, Jake was never created as an aggressive psychopath. That was a later addition, and I will yell about that when we get there.
Now, this time I am going to go not quite chronologically, but about issues in general. At this point, every time a villain exposited about Moon Knight, they mentioned the possibility of him having superstrenght due to “werewolf saliva”, and then dismissing it as a rumor, but by issue 6 Marc mentions that “the virus is gone” because he could ONLY fight four people and win. Yes. Only. Because that’s what a normal man does. This will mark the first time Moon Knight gets downgraded from “maybe a mystical superpower” to “Normal guy with a lot of training”, an issue that has plagued him ever since as it seems that no writer wants to change that particular bit of status quo no matter what, and yet, always find excuses to give the guys that extra bit of strength when needed (From Khonshu’s intervention, once they decided that yep, the God was real and not just a figment of the System’s imagination, to literal “crazy berserk strength” which… not a good look for the one marvel hero with non-comedic mental issues).  Even so, at least in this early series, they are also careful to show Marc or Steven training quite constantly, as to keep at a peak fit level no matter what.
Speaking of Khonshu, these issues are a trip regarding our dear mummified pigeon since not only we have Marc saying in issue 5 that he is not sure that the god actually exists and brought him back to life (Despite the fact that, at least at this point, his origin included at least four people declaring him dead before he woke up in the tomb), and at the same time, the narration giving us a clear connection between  the statue, the Moon System’s mental health AND in some short stories in the latter issues, unexplained events that could’ve been mundane, could’ve been the god’s influence -including killing a thief and saving a group of soldiers in World War II.  At some point, Samuels the poor beleaguered butler proposes to Marlene the idea that maybe Khonshu is possessing the Moon System, and that’s how he revived. Marlene dismisses that, but once again, affirms that yeah, Marc was dead. (I mean, they could’ve said “almost dead” but nope, Marc was an ex-person, pining for the fjords)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which would make Khonshu the fourth alter, if he was not really the Egyptian god, something that would be rarely explored. Well, fifth alter, if we count Moon Knight, and the comic at this point, does kind of counts Moon Knight as Moon Knight sometimes talks about Steven, Jake AND Marc in third person. And yes, that is a complication that will follow our guys for a long time, that I have to admit, the Series managed to sorta fix by giving Marc the Moon Knight armor, and Steven the Mr. Knight suit, even if in the comics, Marc usually is the one Fronting when they’re Mr. Knight and he is a long way from appearing yet, Jake fronts as Moon Knight -when Moon Knight is not treated as a separate alter- and Steven leaves the fighting to the other two.
While dealing with mobsters, the Moon System also fights with very psychologically inclined villains. From the tragic vengeance seeker Stained Steel Scarlet, to  Morpheus, a dream-eater villain created by Peter Alraune, Marlene’s brother. Whom I mention here because on one hand, in her first appearance? Marlene was named Fontaine, not Alraune, and second, here is where we get the first inkling that Marlene has some medical background and… well, what she does with it is not good.
But lets first start with how the System is evolving as characters. In issue six Steven admits for the first time that he sometimes “Forgets” that he, Marc, and Jake are not the same person using different names, and it’s the first time the comic comes anywhere close to say that they aren’t the same person out loud. Not one issue later, Jake starts getting angry about being called Steven, and makes also clear that for him, Marlene is Steven’s girl, and Steven’s girl ONLY.  As in, he has no feelings for her whatsoever, and in fact, at some point thinks that Steven is lucky but he should treat “his lady” better.  And to make things worse, a villain breaks the Khonshu statue and that literally shatters the System. They go into a mental breakdown in which whoever is fronting -because this time we have no clues of who it may be- claims they’re Nothing, none of them are real, and that they don’t even remember WHO killed Randall in Central Park, although they all are sure that it wasn’t Steven since Steven is too good for that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The only way Marlene, Frenchie, Samuels and Hedda the cook that I haven’t mentioned much but adores Steven, manage to get the System back to somewhat normal, and Steven fronting is by restoring the statue, or rather, Marlene convincing them that the statue that was destroyed was in fact, a fake made of plaster. This would sort of put Marlene in a supportive role but… that is not going to last.
See, in the same issue that the statue got stolen and destroyed, Marlene pretty much declares that Steven (because she considers Steven to be the “real” one, or at least, he is the only one she cares about) has schizophrenia and a four-way personality because, again, Moon Knight was considered a fourth (or perhaps the fusion of the three alters? That’s what the cover of issue 1 seems to imply as it says “they must become one to fight evil”) . She insists that part of the problem is that everyone calls them by a different name, and that of course, “Steven” relies too much on Khonshu. Problem is? She doesn’t follow this up with “perhaps we should find a mental health professional who deals with superheroes and can help” (A not so bad idea given how badly the System reacted to the statue’s destruction) but by constantly demanding to have Steven being the only one who fronts at all times, and insisting to him that he is the “real” one, and that it’s better if he never uses the other names, literally suggesting to him not to have a final fusion (Which Is something that some systems want, as I understand it, but not all, and not always the best solution to everyone, hence why a mental health professional would be needed. And, I’ll be honest, just from a purely fiction place? Not a good choice for the Moon System in particular, as that would make them… well, Batman) but to have Steven “kill” or “repress” the others.
She will later make the matter worse by demanding that even Moon Knight retires, even if he does a lot of good. While she may have an excuse right after her brother’s death? IT’s still very crappy and in my eyes what ruins her as a possible romantic interest for any member of the system. As a character she has some very interesting moments, such as when she helps defeat a terrorist with the training Marc has been giving her, but as a person? This is a low she never recovers from.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And It’s even more jarring as just as she starts with that particular line every time she talks to Steven, we are told that, for the system… whichever number of Alters are there at the time given the complex situation there, it’s important to keep every alter. Yes, every single one, as, while fighting with Morpheus, We get this line of dialogue:
“Being four people ain’t easy – and between Lockley, Spector and Grant, not to mention Moon Knight, it gets downright scarey. In fact, my biggest fear is that whichever persona I adopt, it’ll be somehow destroyed by the other three”
They do that from time to time, talk about all three, well, four counting Moon Knight, Alters in the third person, which means that none of them are the one fronting at the time.
Tumblr media
That issue ALSO gives us the first time the Alters fight: thanks to Morpheus powers that make people hallucinate, Moon Knight finds himself facing Steven, Marc and Jake. And that fight is quite interesting as, once again, it makes clear that the really violent alter? The one the others want to keep as hidden as possible? Is MARC because Marc is “too ruthless, too unprincipled” to be a superhero. Now, I know this is different in the TV show, but again, I will tell my reasoning why making Jake more violent is a mistake when we get to the point where the comic did the change (Way before Oscar Isaac charmed us all with his take on the System).
Tumblr media
In any case, even if the number of Alters and their jobs at the wheel are uncertain, what is important is that none of them wants the others to go away. They all are comfortable with each other, yes, even with violent, ruthless Marc, and losing even one of them would be bad for the whole system which is something that unfortunately, Marlene doesn’t see and will bring heartbreak in the future.
Finally, it’s in this batch of issues where we first know that Marc has a connection to Jewish people. While, again, there’s nothing in the text yet that says “yes, Moon Knight is a jewish hero”, we do find out that he has friends who live in Israel, that as a mercenary he worked with the Mossad and is willing to work with them again as needed, and, well, we get to see that the system CAN take on a fake identity without it necessarily becoming an alter as in order to infiltrate a terrorist group, he takes on the name “Yitzak Topol” for a whole three pages (wearing Jake’s mustache, which is a late addition that comes around issue 10 or so, and glasses). But Yitzak is really just Marc with a disguise, so he is not going to appear ever again.
So with this we’re almost half way through Moon Knight’s first volume and as you can see, yeah, the number of Alters seems to vary from writer to writer (Again, some writers consider Moon Knight a fourt Alter) but the only people who actually consider Moon Knight crazy are… well, the Moon System and Marlene. Everyone else, even Frenchie who has known them the most, seems to just go along with the punches and think that if the System is ok and stable? There’s no need to break that balance.
Of course, that still doesn’t explain when that changed… oh, and when Khonshu became an actual presence in the book instead of just, you know, a possible figment of Marc’s imagination.
But for that, we’ll have to move on to part 3

Okay, back in May @isolatedphenomenon asked me if I had an les mis fic recs and I went "oh boy do I !" and then promptly fucked off and disappeared from tumblr for like 6 months...
Anyway on the off chance people are interested, here is my vastly too long list of  my favourite les mis fanfic (that I'm almost 100% sure I'll have accidentally missed some of my favourites off of...)
The vast majority of these are main pairing Enjolras/Grantaire, so I've put those first, divided into multi-chaptered and then one-shots. Below that will be other pairings!
Multi-chaptered
• Witch Boy Series : magic AU, starting with Grantaire solving Enjolras' curse - this is just Incredible world building which gets better as it goes on - my favourite is the Babet interlude
• World Ain't Ready : you know how fandoms tend to have a fic that is just associated with it ? in my experience, for les mis this is it - and well deserved ! High school, fake dating AU with some of the most engaging writing
• BE : Enjolras is dragged back into theatre production, helping Eponine put on a production of Hamlet - really love the characterisation in this, and this is really one of those modern AUs that actually feels like real life - really good writing
• After the End : the definitive apocalypse AU in my eyes - les amis are an underground resistance to the dystopian government - really wonderful characterisation of Grantaire and the amis
• You never have to wonder; you never have to ask. : I tend to find fic by scrolling through bookmarks of a pairing, which means I often see repeats; this is a fic that if I see I just re-read cause I know I'll enjoy it - the amis sparked a failed rebellion, and now 18 months later Grantaire ends up staying at Enjolras' after returning to Paris for Marius and Cosette's wedding
• Your Heart on Your Skin : Soulmate AU with flower tattoos marking important emotions and events - wonderful concept and world building
• Impatient to Be Free : Daughters of Bilitis AU - if that doesn't make you excited I don't know what else to say to convince you (aside from saying the author is a simply wonderful writer)
• You Dance Dreams : Okay. Not to be over dramatic, but this fic did genuinely qualitatively change my life, in that it was the first thing that got me looking up contemporary ballet and now that's like one of my favourite things and big hobby So. Also its really great writing; music/creative arts school les amis with Grantaire choreohraphing the ballet for Combeferre's opera, with a heavy emphasis on Grantaire realising he really never actually got over Enjolras
• philia : this one is an absolute classic to me, but not given nearly enough recognition - one of the more realistic college AUs ever written, and the writing of Grantaire is so good because it hits the perfect balance of sympathy and annoyance about his behaviour (that's a genuine compliment)
• Coffee Hooligans : fucking tragedy this never got properly finished, Enjolras leads the amis as social justice vigilantes and tries to hide the criminal bits of his life from R
• Fighting the Hurricane : Pacific Rim AU that's less an AU and more just placing the les mis characters in the Pacific Rim universe. Really good and riveting read, also super interesting depiction of Grantaire
• Weaving Olden Dances : Fairy AU - Grantaire "claims" Enjolras to prevent his execution - really good writing, love Grantaires characterisation
• Paris Burning : canon era (sort of) where cities have a physical being - Grantaire is Paris and becomes entangled in Enjolras' revolution - oh the world building is truly *chefs kiss*
• Euphoria is You For Me : Enjolras and Grantaire keep meet cuting in a wonderfully written Brooklyn - feels like a love letter to Brooklyn at times, and I really like the characterisation of Grantaire
• so please just fall in love with me this christmas : Enjolras works for the environmental company Grantaire volunteers at, and keeps getting secret gifts at Christmas - I sound a little like a broken record but the Grantaire characterisation is very good
• You Are the Moon : Wild West esque Space AU - Grantaire has to call on the amis to help rescue Valjean and Cosette, despite Grantaire leaving the amis 6 months before. On re-reading the Enjolras characterisation feels a little rushed, but overall fantastic story telling and the Grantaire arc is a Delight
• Pandemos : Enjolras is aphrodite, and seeks peace from all his suitors in R/Hephestus' cave
• Pining for You : Hallmark christmas romance - Grantaire returns home to work on his father's tree farm, and Enjolras is the lawyer helping prevent the farm being sold - cute as shit imo
• Once We're Kings : Fantasy AU - a country hosts a ball to marry Prince Enjolras and the rival country sends Grantaire as a fuck you - one of the best ways of doing Enjolras as a prince in a fantasy and just really nicely written
• Never Bitter and All Delicious : Fairy Godmother AU - yes really, yes its genuinely a very good read
• On One Condition : Fantasy AU - Enjolras is a bored knight who finally goes to check out the local dragon, which turns out to be Grantaire - I really like how they capture Enjolras' stubborn nature and it's such a well written soft growth of love between them
• That's How Easy Love Can Be : Les Amis work at a primary school; and its secret santa time! very fun portrayal of Enjolras
• The Lark and Her Lieutenants : re write of canon where Cosette is the leader of the revolution - just *chefs kiss*
• If You Tickle Us, Do We Not Laugh : Grantaire is Enjolras' secret android - really good at writing a relationship that's incredibly loving but just keeps being antagonistic and coming off wrong
One Shots
• True Colours : AU where you leave colours on the people important to you - Enjolras and Grantaire falling for each other is so soft and gently written its lovely, this is genuinely one of my favourites
• Keep It Kind, Keep It Good, Keep It Right : this one is so good to me, because it builds off my pet hatred of everyone assuming Enjolras doesn't care about (or at least actively show he cares about) his friends
• blooming : very soft post-dystopian utopia that has just a really wonderful sense of hope and light to me
• and the wall leaned away (or: The Pros and Cons of Tilling) : perfectly realised characterizations of the amis, Grantaire needs a date to her final year art exhibition - deals with anxiety over protest in a way that actually hits for me
• not just one of the crowd : R helps run a leftist bakery and bike repair shop - very cute characterisation, and I think more les mis fanfic should link to anarchist essays
• Lovesickness : Enjolras is an idiot and thinks he's sick rather than having a crush - the writing of Joly and Combeferre in this is some of my favourite depictions of these two
• If there's a rocket, tie me to it : absolutely heartbreaking sci-fi AU about the amis as doomed mecha pilots
• Where I Fall is Where I Land : Enjolras is a Roman commander as Rome's power is leaving England, and then meets the pict Grantaire (+ fun soulmark stuff !)
• You Started Foreign to Me : Enjolras moves to america and R is the overnight grocery clerk who helps her learn Spanish - cute fluffy lesbians with a wonderfully written driven Enjolras
• Love Is Touching Souls : very cute soulmate AU - and one I really love for really truly considering the implications of soul marks and creating historical lore around it
• Ten Years : R is a musician, and it non-linearly charts his relationship to Enj from high school to 10 years later
• put up with me then I'll make you see : Grantaire lives above Enjolras, and its christmas - I find it to have a very fun interpretation of pining Enjolras
• A Cat Called Trash Can : this was one of the first les mis fics I ever read (yes I know it says it was published in 2020, but I think it has to be a re-upload or something?) and it does still have a special place in my heart - Grantaire rescues a cat, but Enjolras is the only one with an apartment free to look after it
• Still I'm Begging to Be Free : inception AU where les amis have to rescue a sleeping R from his own brain
•I'm in it for You : cw: illness, cancer - R has cancer and is being a martyr about telling his friends so Enjolras drives him back from chemo
• walls come tumbling down : sky high au - a very good high school AU with the perfect level of campy superhero powers
• This brave new world's not like yesterday : Enjolras needs a job, so ends up working in a bowling alley with Grantaire and bonding
Enjolras/Grantaire/Combeferre
• In Defiance of All Geometry : les amis are a student co-op house, Enjolras and Combeferre are pining friends and Grantaire is the newbie
• Still the Same : this is very good writing and very compelling - if you can get over the (imo) plot hole of Enjolras working for the FBI. R was an art thief Enj put away and is briefly helping the FBI out, and Combeferre is Enjolras' husband
• To Kingdom Come : cw: war and PTSD from that, Enjolras and Combeferre are part of a group of refugees that have crossed into a more fantasy land, and Grantaire is a lone traveller from that land that attempts to help - that was a shit summary of this very emotional, wonderfully written fic about war and love in all forms
• Gonna need (a spark to ignite) : I always love a twist on a classic trope, and this is a very fun take on the soulmate AU - Enjolras loses feeling in his soul mark as a child, falls in love with Grantaire and then his soulmate, Combeferre, turns up
Eponine/Cosette
• Pretty Girls Don't Know the Things That I Know : simply stunning writing - perfect example of soft writing about a harsh world
• she knows her way around : Eponine and Cosette bond, ostensibly so Eponine can find out about her for Marius, and their interactions are so playful and realistic, its wonderful
• always find me floating on oceans : Cosette stows away on Eponine's pirate ship - I do always have a soft spot for eposette fics (not just cause I ship it) because they truly characterise Cosette in a really considered and interesting way
• There's No Making Love : I'm putting this under eposette even though there is some significant enjolras/grantaire content, because the Cosette characterisation is so fun and cute
• round and round again : this fic really beautifully translates Cosette's bad childhood and then isolated teenage years, and the impact that would have on her as an adult into a modern AU
• Underwater Thunderheards : this is based off the book The Scorpio Races, and is just a really nice short fic  about longing
• How To Change The World Without Taking Power : Marius has a crush on Cosette and she's tried being polite and subtle in turning him down, so just ends up fake dating Eponine instead
• blood red fruit and poison's kiss : Snow White AU - Cosette as Snow White
• The Winters Cannot Fade Her : Snow White Au 2.0 - Eponine as Snow White - this was written as a pair to the one above which is just so cute to me
• marriage à la mode : Cosette and Eponine run a bridal shop together and it's very cute !
• Temporary Hold : I personally find this a really fun and very unique take on Cosette - with exams coming up she decides she needs to get laid on the reg and so hits up Eponine to act as if they're already long term girlfriends
Combeferre/Courfeyrac
• better than you had it : fake dating but kick it up an emotional notch - Courf and Ferre pretend to still be together after breaking up for a family event
• take flight, come near : nice and cute low fantasy, where Combeferre runs a dragon sanctuary and Courf finds an injured dragon
Rare Pairs
• The Future's Owned by You and Me : cute Enjolras/Feuilly with actual radical politics and real life organising difficulties and wins
• First Dates and Other Dangers : Combeferre and Grantaire agree to go on a blind date and it's awkward until it isn't - just cute !
• after midnight : Combeferre has insomnia and meets Grantaire in various all night fast food chains
• as you are : Bahorel and Jehan getting ready together
• Almost Romantic : Jehan works at a museum, and takes Combeferre on a little tour
• Understudy : Jehan/Combeferre, with Combeferre's insecurities regarding being seen as second best to Enjolras
• Here There Be Dragons : Courf/Enj/Ferre - Courf and Enj are superheroes and Ferre is the doctor that patches them up
• To Let it Occur (Laisser Faire la Nature) : Feuilly has a stupidly long stopover in Paris and meets Enjolras
• rule of three : Courf/Enj/Ferre as spies and loving boyfriends
• Good Rhetoric : snapshots of cute cuddly courf/enj/ferre
• subluxate, dislocate, replace : found family and chronic illness with Joly/Bossuet/Musichetta
• Strike stone, strike home (like lightning) : so this fic took one minor piece of lore about Tolkien's dwarves and made a beautiful j/b/m fic from it
• Almost Inevitable : Bahorel/Feuilly friends-with-benefits
• god only knows (what I'd be without you) : Bahorel/Feuilly with a closeted Feuilly and a beautiful Feuilly and Eponine friendship

Reader’s Corner: SAO Project Alicization, Evangelion ANIMA, and Cooking with Fluffy Friends
Ascendance of a Bookworm: Part 2, Vol. 3
Recently, I introduced my sister to the Ascendance series, and she’s hooked. As she gobbles her way through the novels from Part 2, I’ve been rereading them to keep up with her questions and comments. And I have to say, I really like this volume in particular. In some ways, it’s a filler novel, sandwiched between the rising tensions of volume two and the approaching climax in volume four. Myne sells off rights to the paper ink, completes the first printing press (finally!), finishes sets of playing cards for the orphanage, and cooks up some new sweets recipes in the interim. Nothing incredibly unique, but it’s the small details about Myne’s life that I love—including her banter with Benno and Ferdinand, of which there is much in this volume. Of course, it’s not all easy reading. Now that nobles know about Myne’s wealth of mana, she’s in more danger than ever before; and the arrival of a *certain* blue priest sends the whole temple into a panic. But whether you’re reading for the tension or the sweetness, you’ll definitely find something to love in this volume. At least, I did—even on my second read. ~ sleepminusminus
Ascendance of a Bookworm is published by J-Novel Club, which offers a free preview.
Sword Art Online: Project Alicization, Vol. 2
Volume two of Project Alicization picks up right where the initial one left off, with Kirito waking up in a digital world and meeting his new friend, Eugeo. He discovers that Alice has been taken by the Integrity Knight, but the next day, he and Eugen also can’t find Selka, the latter’s friend and sister to Alice. Elsewhere, Asuna and the OG gang try to figure out where Kirito’s body is after he went unconscious. It seems foul play and deception are afoot with Rath, the company who created this new game. Volume two keeps the action going at a frenetic pace, but it struggles with the same issues as the previous one. There is too much dialogue about how souls work in the game, in addition to other non-essential details. Some will enjoy the heavy focus on detail in this volume as with the previous, but this reviewer finds that SAO tries a little too hard to explain itself instead of moving the story along. I am, however, enjoying the new characters and plot as well as basking in Kirito’s bravery, so I continue to look forward to the next part of the series to see what happens next! ~ Samuru
Sword Art Online: Project Alicization is published by Yen Press.*
Since I Was Abandoned After Reincarnating, I Will Cook With My Fluffy Friends, Vol. 1 (light novel)
After her engagement to a pathetic prince is dissolved because of a malicious plot, Laeticia regains memories of her past life as a Japanese woman who loves animals and cooking. From there, she accepts an offer to become a figurehead queen in a neighboring country, and not wanting to bother the king—who has become distrustful of women—she lives apart from him in a villa with various servants and, of course, fluffy animals. There’s actually quite a lot more than just slice-of-life cooking here, as volume one presents nefarious noble plots Laetitia has to deal with, which adds drama to the story. Also, there is a bit of a fun element to the romance aspect, because while the king doesn’t quite want to meet his wife-in-name-only in person…well, he is the King of Wolfvarte, so maybe he can approach her incognito in a, let’s say, fluffier form? There are other neat fantastical elements here, and, of course, plenty of cooking and petting animals, making this was a fun story that I would love to read more of. ~ stardf29
Since I Was Abandoned After Reincarnating, I Will Cook With My Fluffy Friends, Vol. 1 is published by Cross Infinite World.
Neon Genesis Evangelion ANIMA, Vol. 1
The Evangelion franchise has birthed several alternate universe (AU) series since its initial inception—two of which we’ve covered in this column in recent months—but ANIMA, originally serialized in Japan between 2008 and 2013, is distinctive both for being a light novel entry and in its ambition, functioning as a direct line from the original series if it has gone the direction of Shinji avoiding Human Instrumentality and now, three years later, dealing with a new threat, while bringing along most of the remaining characters from the series as well. Little time is spent exploring school life, as noted by the author himself in the volume’s extensive extras, with the action begining almost immediately and continuing in an unrelenting manner. Much like the final stretch of the anime, challenges occur one after another, barely leaving readers time to breathe. At once, the novel is a thrill because of this structure, as well as in how KHARA and Ikuto Yamashita reenvision NERV and the world it protects in light of the changes that come with Shinji’s altered decision and three years of maturation, while keeping tone and characterization consistent with its predecessor, and also disappointing because it doesn’t allow room for much growth for its characters. That’s not to say that Shinji, Rei, especially Asuka, and all the rest, haven’t developed greatly in the preceding three years, and readers are invited to witness these changes throughout volume one, but little growth occurs throughout the course of these some-300 pages. There is a much heavier focus on the sci-fi elements of the story, which will delight many fans, especially those who are interested in how technology in this universe works and how it’s progressed, but which will also serve to confuse others.  ~ Twwk
Neon Genesis Evangelion ANIMA is published by Seven Seas.
Your Lie in April, Vol. 6
Continuing my re-read during the month of April, I completed volume six, which continues the story of Kousei as he’s told that he will be accompany Kaori to a recital event. Unbeknownst to her, she selects a song that screams Kousei’s Mom, leading to a volume that forces Kousei to confront his unresolved feelings with his late mother, for whom he never allowed himself to. He just bottled his emotions deep inside. Other events occurs as well, including a deeper dive which the volume takes into his mother’s friend Hiroko Seto, and Kaori all but admitting to Watari that she likes Kousei; yet at the core of these chapters, as with the entire series, this is Kousei’s story. And let’s be real—it’s not a happy-go-lucky tale, filled with highs and almost as many lows as this teenager grapples with heavy emotional baggage from his late, abusive mother. Re-reading Your Lie in April has been a good exercise, helping me see different things I may have missed before. I posted more extensive thoughts on this volume on Twitter, if you’d like to explore this weighty selection in more detail. ~ MDMRN
Your Lie in April is published by Kodansha.
Skip Beat, Vol. 18
This, this is what I follow Skip Beat for. Following the “Dark Moon” and “Suddenly, a Love Story” segments, which were long and mediocre, volume 18 features a short arc focusing on a new character and his interactions with Kyoko, who isn’t relegated to a damsel in distress as she had been previously. Returning to her Love Me section job, Kyoko is given a special assignment to assist Kuu Hizuri, a Hollywood star returning to Japan, and who has some connection to Ren beyond having played the same role in the Dark Moon drama. Coming off as a brash, arrogant type, Kuu soon appears to be very intentional in how and why he’s picking on Kyoko, and turns out to be quite an engaging character. Kuu’s actions bring out treasured qualities in both Kyoko and Ren, the latter of whom has been near-insufferable in his insecurity. A brisk read, volume 18 advances the narrative, continues to have fun with the idea of celebrity, and deepens the backgrounds that connect the series leads as it gets Skip Beat back on track—a most welcome volume, indeed. ~ Twwk
Skip Beat is published by Viz.*

I was asked about this topic recently, and, being bored out of my mind, I felt inspired to use it as a starting point for a new series! I hope to share my current headcanons about the personality types of the Digimon Adventure universe’s main characters, according to different personality systems: astrology, Enneagram, MBTI... feel free to suggest any other typologies you’d like me to explore in the future.
In this first post, I’ll try to explain which of the Sun Sign personality archetypes I find more likely and interesting for each character. Consider this this an update of my previous headcanons, post-tri. (and post LAST EVOLUTION Kizuna).
1: DIGIMON ADVENTURE + ZODIAC SIGNS
Taichi - Aries
Yamato - Aries
Sora - Pisces [semi-canon]
Koushirou - Aquarius
Mimi - Leo
Jou - Virgo
Takeru - Libra
Hikari - Pisces
Daisuke - Sagittarius
Miyako - Gemini [canon]
Iori - Capricorn
Ken - Cancer
Meiko Mochizuki - Virgo/Libra
Maki Himekawa - Scorpio
Daigo Nishijima - Leo
Note: Every single headcanon is highly subjective and even I will probably change my mind about it. This is only a PROPOSAL.
If you’re interested in my interpretation and methodology, read on!
Canon Clues
Although there are no official birthdays for the characters, several Adventure materials have provided “goalposts” where we can fit some characters’ birthdays. I strive to make my HCs as canon-compliant as possible, so it’s important for me to take this info into account.
Miyako is stated to be a Gemini in 02.
The official synopsis of tri. Indicates that Taichi is 17 years old during the series, suggesting the has an April-June birthday.
Sure, you’re free to ignore this little nugget if you prefer, but I personally like to think there’s a reason they mentioned Taichi’s age explicitly — something they never did before. They also never mentioned the explicit age of any of the other characters.
Funnily enough, the DALEK official website and novel lists the character’s ages during the events of the film. Since the film takes place in the summer of 2010, taking those numbers at face-value would require us to believe all 8 characters have birthdays in the first half of the year.
This contradicts the explicit on-screen information about Jou’s age in the original series (see below).
I’m proposing this should be interpreted as their “average” ages, rather than precise ages at this specific moment in time — after all, in Kizuna it’s more difficult to identify the characters by their school year, like they always did before.
Sora’s birthday is canonically before the events of Our War Game. The film takes place during the spring holidays, which typically begin around the third week of March.
Sora having a March birthday is so universally accepted by Japanese fans that it’s even on her Wikipedia page. I wouldn’t be surprised if more recent writers took that information into account, post-OWG, and portrayed her accordingly.
Notice that Pisces is only the more likely option considering the canon timeline and Sora’s personality — Aries (late March) and Aquarius (mid-February) could fit as well. Hence why I consider this choice [semi-canon].
Jou, who is a 6th-grader, mentions he’s 11 years old during Adventure. This suggest his birthday would be after August 1.
Ken is supposed to be 9 years old in August 2000, when he’s in Year 3, suggesting he has an April-August birthday.
This is different from other guidebooks which only list the characters “average” ages, because this lists Ken’s precise age during a specific event.
I believe Ken being exactly 9 years old went to the Digital world is deliberate, since Osamu is stated to be 3 years older than Ken, hadn’t yet turned 12 when he died.
Again, except for Miyako, Sora, and Jou birthdays, I can understand why fans chose to ignore any of this.
Personal Notes
My method isn’t about finding a putative “Official / True Birthday” — that never existed, at least for the Adventure eight. It’s about finding birthdays that work within the limitations of canon (see previous section).
My HCs are based on the personality / character archetypes represented by the the zodiac signs. In theory, any Chosen Child could be understood as representing a specific symbolical archetypes.
The problem is that the Adventure characters are quite complex and often deconstruct traditional archetypes. This explains why it’s so hard for fans to agree on which sign they are supposed to represent. I should also note that anime series seem to understand astrological archetypes slightly differently from the Western mainstream tradition, which explains why typical anime zodiac signs sometimes feel a bit “off”.
Nevertheless, some archetypes are so strong that most of the fandom seems to have reached a consensus: Jou/Virgo and Koushirou/Aquarius, for example. Then you have textbook examples of archetypes like Gemini/Miyako (unsurprisingly canon), Taichi/Aries, and Hikari/Pisces. But even there is a lot of room for disagreement and subjective interpretation!
*
The 02 writers clearly intended Daisuke to symbolise Fire, Miyako Air, Iori Earth and, due to the Dark Ocean connection, Ken Water. In fact, it’s super easy to place those four characters into any traditional 4-group personality types, such as the four temperaments, Jung’s types, blood types, ABCD personality, etc.
My HCs respect this, and ended up creating two polar opposites within the team: Daisuke/Miyako (mutable) and Ken/Iori (cardinal).
*
It’s tempting to ascribe 12 main characters = 12 signs, but post-tri. I’m inclined to do something different and not put myself into such a limiting framework.
For this reason I repeat some signs, and I don’t have any Taurus character (sorry!).
*
My MAIN innovative choice is that I suspect Taichi and Yamato might represent the same sun sign.
Now, I understand this is an extremely controversial opinion. It isn’t a possibility I thought about until quite recently.
But Taichi and Yamato being “different but the same / two sides of the same coin” is incredibly well represented if both of them correspond to the Aries personality archetype.
After all, they’re the leaders, the heroes, the Knights in shining armor. This explains their incredible similarities, despite superficial differences. as well as their love-hate dynamic: the rivalry, the union, the way they complement and balance each other out in an almost instinctive way.
Here are some examples of the Aries/Aries dynamic from the literature...
Both of you are independent individuals and you don’t like feeling “owned” by anyone. Neither of you can tolerate being dominated or bossed by anyone else, so you probably make your own decisions, and direct your own lives. You respect one another’s autonomy, and a relationship that is based on constant togetherness and dependency wouldn’t suit either of you. Sometimes, however, there is too much emphasis on individualism rather than on being close and nurturing the relationship. You both have proud egos, and are sensitive to criticism. Almost inevitably you will compete with each other, and in small doses this can be invigorating. But it easily becomes nasty, and one of you is likely to get hurt. If you’ve ever seen two rams locking horns, you know what I mean! You either respect one another immensely or detest one another – rarely anything in between. (X)
If your relationship has been built on the basis that you are equals, the fire element produces tremendous vision and industriousness. Your combined power and effort could well be a force to be reckoned with — but again, only if you both learn to subdue your own ego in the service of each other. Remember, you can’t always be right. You need to try hard to see things from each other’s perspective; this will help the two of you become a great partnership over time. (x)
When Mars clashes with Mars, the result can be full-scale war, with all flags flapping, bravely and colorfully. Occasional flare-ups are bound to occur when these two are thrown into close, daily proximity, without the relief of some separateness in their association. But there will also be some glorious Highs to offset these Lows. (...)  It's been said that Aries people have a way about them. They do. Their own way. Yet, despite that sometimes antagonistic Martian exterior, they'll sense each other's desperate need to be appreciated and liked. When they get together, they may struggle for leadership, but the experience will supply some well-needed lessons. The shock of living with someone - or being around some- one - as innocently thoughtless, selfish and aggressive as one's self, is sure to soften any battering Ram, although there may be a few scars to show for the les- sons in living thus mastered. Aries hearts always carry more scars than the Rams ever show, or openly discuss. (x)
Sounds familiar, doesn't it? The more you read, the more this pattern begins to make sense. Try to watch the Dark Masters arc, the Agumon-is-kidnapped mini arc, tri., and even Kizuna with this possibility in mind, and you’ll understand what I mean.
Sure, order to accept this theory, you have to understand Yamato as a more atypical reserved / sensitive Aries (influenced by a Cancer Moon, perhaps?) and Taichi as a more “pure” Arien type. Yamato is more like a baby lamb, right? (don’t tell it to his face).
You can make a very strong argument for Leo!Taichi (that was my initial HC as well) or Yamato as almost anything else. I wouldn’t disagree. But why not come up with a fresh perspective to explain these two?
Oh, and in case you’re curious, their (canon) Japanese Zodiac is also the same: Dragon, the direct equivalent to Aries.
*
A note about tri.: typing Maki and Daigo seemed straightforward enough. Maki is the stereotypical Scorpio antagonist, and Goggle Boy Daigo’s partner evolved into a literal lion.
I couldn’t resist the idea of making Meiko a Libra, considering her digimon partner is literally the Libra and Meiko is the 9th member of the group. But  personality probably fits other signs better — it’s very tempting to type her a Virgo, the polar opposite of Hikari. She could also be the missing Taurus element (Mei as the literal May Queen).
The truth is... I can’t decide!
*
Disclaimer: There is zero scientific evidence for astrology and, as far as I’m concerned, it’s only interesting as a tool to analyze fictional characters in symbolic /archetypal terms. My headcanons are based on extensive reading about astrology, its symbolism and psychological profiles; I’m happy to share my sources (they’re not from pop astrology). But I’m also aware of the Barnum effect. We are all biased; there are no right or wrong options. Everyone’s conflicting headcanons are equally valid.
Feel free to ask questions or request more in-depth explanations for my suggestions, but FFS don’t start arguing with me and insisting I’m “wrong” based on other people’s equally subjective and disputable headcanons.

Are you doing that ship thing? If so....... Thor Bruce.
who’s the werewolf and who’s the hunter
Thor’s the hunter, Bruce a werewolf who really is only trying to live his life and avoid busybodies in the small town. With Thor coming in for a different monster...well.
He just thinks Bruce is the well-mannered coroner who is oddly attractive and exceeds expectations.
It’s a week before the full moon. Bruce is wondering how averse Thor is to seeing a rather...hairy situation.
who’s the mermaid and who’s the fisherman
thor’s the mermaid who LOVES humanity and bruce is the fisherman who HATES humanity, but still answers thor’s questions as well as he can. He brings books down and they read together and Thor wonders how bad it would be if he brings Bruce to the ocean, with him.
who’s the witch and who’s the familiar
Bruce is the witch who is just trying to make a living selling small little herbs and potions and tinctures or whatever, and Thor is the Huge Dog who won’t leave and flops by Bruce’s feet at night for bed.
Bruce has accepted that this dog is a Little Off and sometimes swears there’s something a bit more to him. (He’s right.)
who’s the barista and who’s the coffee addict
Bruce is the coffee addict who literally will ask for a whole pot. Thor lets him because A.) He’s a sucker for science majors, and B.) Bruce would take it himself if denied.
Thor also makes sure Bruce eats, and gets to try out his baking skills, which get better over time.
Eventually after Bruce publishes his first paper and asks Thor if he would like dinner, since he has to make up for free coffee and also just likes Thor. Of course he says yes.
who’s the professor and who’s the TA
Bruce is the professor and Thor is the Jacked TA who Should Not Be a TA For This Class. He looks like a whole football player but then goes on long-winded discussions of space and genetics and biology. He knows way more than he lets on.
Thor is also an incorrigible flirt who makes Bruce stutter and helps the students finish Last Minute Online Questions, which makes him a pretty cool guy.
who’s the knight and who’s the prince(ss)
Bruce makes for a surprising knight. Doubling as a healer and doctor, it’s not known to everyone why he’s the personal guard of Thor, who makes a fantastic warrior himself and could defend himself quite well.
At least...until war breaks out and Bruce tears through the field, armor barely covering anything. It’s near-madness.
Thor, however, is enthralled with this knight and announces to all that if he is to wed anyone, it will only be the Good, Kind Doctor Banner.
who’s the teacher and who’s the single parent
Thor is the single parent/guardian of his much-younger brother Loki, who loves to cause trouble and thinks that his teacher needs a love life and his brother needs someone Responsible. (And Thor is responsible, he just wears board shorts a tad too often.)
This is why Loki keeps getting parent-teacher conferences, and Bruce eventually just gets Thor’s personal number.
And if Thor texts him to get dinner and “out of the uncomfortable, small chairs...” well. Then that’s great.
The only problem is finding a babysitter for Loki, who is not, as he insists, “ready to be home alone.”
who’s the writer and who’s the editor
Thor is well-known for fantasy writing, and Bruce is a well-known editor who has a quick rate of getting work back.
Thor is quite forward and dedicates the second book to Bruce, with the inscription:
When you see this, I hope you’ll accept dinner with me.
This blows up on the internet, and Bruce has to actually make a social media account to confirm that “yes, I did get dinner with him please stop bothering me.”

“Duality”
Written by: @evanthenerd83
“Don’t get too close,” whispered the father. “They’ll bite.”
He grabbed his son’s shoulders with both hands, steering him to the far side of the path. Where it was bright and safe.
The rocky soil was broken in some places. He’d seen movement inside, quick and subtle. Almost invisible. ‘Bugs,’ he thought, grimacing in disgust.
“Don’t let them see you,” whispered the mother. “They’ll crush.”
She held up her hand, signaling for her daughter to stay in the depths of their canyon. Where it was dark and safe.
The giants took big, prolonged steps. Shadows fell upon their land. Rocks were dislodged by the shaking. ‘Gods,’ she thought, staring in wonder.

When they came, they said that they would help us, that they were good, that they came in peace. That didn’t last long. I’ve heard stories of what they’ve done, lucky enough myself to escape before their true nature was revealed. Now, survivors, how ever few we may be, hide away, away from the strange creatures that stole our land and our lives. Now, we live in fear of their glowing red eyes.
“Another World”
Written by: Manu @themidnxghtwriter
Taru had never run faster. Their lungs were screaming for air but they couldn’t afford to stop. They ran. Over startlingly blue streams. Past dull, grey rocks. Their eyes watered in the thick, dusty air. Their muscles burned.
They couldn’t rest. They weren’t safe.
Someone, something was still following them.
Taru ducked into a cave, panting heavily. They couldn’t run any further. Their legs were numb. Their heartbeat roared in the ears. Their bare feet were throbbing, little crumbs of dirt digging into the soles. Dust and sweat matted Taru’s long dark hair. They slid down onto the ground, tears clearing a steady path in the dust on their face. Taru had to stop breathing so heavily. The Thing might hear them.
They couldn’t hear anything for a couple of beats. Steeling themselves, they dared to look out over the desert-like land.
It looked like any dry landscape from Earth would at first glance. Your second glance would show that it very obviously wasn’t. The lake in front of the cave was a striking, unnatural-looking blue that almost hurt to look at directly. It reflected a thin, watery light over the walls of the cave. Scaly reptilian beasts hissed from underwater. Grey-skinned creatures with long horns atop their heads stared at them with malicious curiosity. The rocks were a dull pink, almost as if they’d been painted over. The sky was a resolute, bright but fading purple. The moon had disappeared.
And an enormous shadow loomed in the distance. Each step it took made the ground quake beneath Taru. Glowing red eyes that bored into their soul. They’d already seen the indescribable horror that the thing was up close, barely escaping with their life and they wanted to pull the memory out with their bare hands if they could.
This was not Earth.
This was not the place Taru had woken up that morning.
And so, the only thing they could do was run.
“Watchers”
Written by: Blurred-Cat @blurred-cat
"They they are again mum-- watching us."
"Well, child, they aren't watching. They've not the ability to anymore."
"What are they doing?"
"Isn't that the question? Not even the wisest among us know-- but it's always at the same hour."
"Who are they?"
"We know not their names, child, only that they departed this world too quickly-- in fire and light."
"You mean the great light that started the world," gasped the child, pulling up their horned mask.
"Yes, child. It tore them away for the world so swiftly their souls did stay bound," the mother lifted her horned mask, to look at her child, "And we know they continue the last moments of their life."
"But the stories say they brought the light," replied the child, confused.
"Not all of them-- only those with power. These were innocents," sighed the mother, "And they likely knew not of the Burning Light which killed them all. It is by their folly we do exist. Do not stare, child, else you go as mad as them-- the Humans."
In awe, the child lowered their mask, and turned their gaze away from the shadowy giants.
“Roamers”
Written by: L.W. Locke @lliuem
They were the gods. Once a class of great kings. What remained of a long-gone civilization. A master race. Enough power to down an army of egocentric knights and their armor. Above all, they were human. Yet only two remained. They were the Roamers.
Hunted for glory and fame. They wanted no war. They only wanted peace. No longer did they walk the world freely. They lived in the shame of their fallen kings. The shadows welcomed them.
Darkness loomed over the cliffside. Not that of a landscape hidden by clouds. But something monstrous. Rolling thunder. The storm that never ceased. Yet not a cloud in the sky.
Waves crashed against the wall of rock. No noise. For in the sea below, a Roamer sat. Their shoulders barely above water. Because, of course, they were but a child. A prince as one would say.
Ignorant to the war-torn wreck that surrounded them. A ship. To them it was normal. Wreckage. Forgotten. To a king, it was a sign of loss. The loss that was scattered throughout the land.
The last king. They were the shadow. The darkness that loomed. Their hatred for the knights that only grew stronger day by day. Anger that could only be soothed by the prince. Hope.
The king made it their final quest to guard the prince from the evils of this world. No longer would they live in a world for themselves. Instead, they lived to keep the legacy of the fallen kings alive.
Through the Fog
Written by: @sarcasm-for-free
The path they were taking through the patch of garden behind their new house was swallowed by thick fog.
An expedition, Joe had called it before tugging his father with an outstretched hand along. His wish for an adventure hadn’t been denied, and nothing would for the next few weeks, or at least for as long as he had double brownie points on his side for taking their sudden move so well. The job demanded it, dad had said. Although Joe still didn’t understand what his father even did for money. All he knew was that he always laughed funny and shrugged when people asked him for which company he was working.
“Careful,” dad said and pulled Joe closer to keep him from tripping over a big rock. The ground was becoming more uneven the longer they walked, the lush green grass tapering off into colorful gravel and protruding stones.
“What do you think is behind the fog?” Joe asked, peering at his dad because there wasn’t anything to see in front of him except for white and wobbly mist.
Dad smiled, once again kind of funny, at him. “What do you want there to be?”
Joe thought about it for a second, biting his lip. “Something cool.” He nodded decisively. “Not just a swing set.” Then he shook his head, slightly panicked. “Not that a swing would be bad.” Sometimes dad was illogically touchy about the strangest things, as mom had called it before she’d left them. It wouldn’t do to hurt him if they did end up with a swing set.
“Hm,” dad said. His smile turned into a wide grin. “Let’s find out.”
Tugging Joe along for a change, his father trudged deeper into the fog while he pulled a dark plastic box, as big as his palm, from his trouser pocket. Sometimes he did stuff like that. Like grabbing boxes with punched-in holes or bits and bobs with lots of flashy buttons out of nowhere, or smiling with too many teeth, or packing them up from Lincoln County, Nevada, to go to the weirdest places for no other reason than work and then move back barely a month later.
“Okay!”
But that was fine, Joe thought as his next step ended up crushing something crunchy and also oddly squishy under his shoe, because it was never boring with dad.

ten faves
Rules: name ten favorite characters from ten different things (tv, movies, books, etc.).
Thanks for tagging me @bibliophileiz ; exactly the sort of distraction I both needed (and that my current concentration-level is capable of) at the moment! Hard choices ~ especially as many of my favorites come in pairs! ~ but my top ten today...
...after draft error #97 or so, sorry in advance for the scroll, and for anyone else who winds up responding, do not draft on your phone take my word for it...
Princess Bride: Inigo Montoya
Tumblr media
Which character don't I love in Princess Bride? Even Humperdink is such a pitch-perfect villain. But while I'd choose Westley if I was picking a date... Inigo's the one who captures me, every time. It's not the desire for revenge itself that's compelling; it's the love for his father - the heartbreak, the dedication, even the defeat and the rise again (the "you told me to go back to the beginning scene" comes to mind as one that stays with me and is probably a huge influence on things I think of but haven't really written yet...)
Harry Potter: Sirius Black
Tumblr media
Yes, that's a gif of Midnight Mark from Pirate Radio, because I very much mean the book version (sorry, Gary Oldman!). Is anyone following me surprised by this one?
I'm so fascinated by all of the Marauder era characters, both as they are on the page and the hinted-at aspects of them explored in fandom; love Lily/James... but Sirius is the Harry Potter character I think of first (honorable mention to non-HP Edmond Dantès, as I love Count of Monte Cristo and think much of Sirius' plotline owes that a clear debt). Aside from being a tragedy, aside from all his great lines, what a *fascinating* character and twist, in a way, on the fairy godmother plot in his first book 3 appearance (getting Harry the Firebolt, his permission slip, etc). I could say SO much more but will avoid writing an essay.
Smallville/Superman comics/adaptations: Lois Lane
Tumblr media
Always a favorite character for me, but Erica Durance in Smallville is my favorite version. I feel like they gave her a bit of Marian Ravenwood (specifically in the outdrinking the frat boys scene) and leaned into the modern comics "army brat" angle so well.
Anne of Green Gables: Anne Shirley.
Tumblr media
With honorable mentions to of course Jo March, other fellow aspiring writer Emily of New Moon, and Pippi Longstocking, other fun redhead of my childhood reading... Anne, and all her drama and dreams and mishaps, wins out as most relatable for me. Book heroine of my heart.
Speaking of childhood book heroines...
Star Wars: Jaina Solo.
Tumblr media
Look, this is partly to save me between picking a favorite between Leia and Han (a dilemma which has haunted me since childhood, in part because, guiltily, it's Han), and serious honorable mentions to Mara Jade and especially Jyn Erso here... but Jaina was *everything* I wanted in a heroine as a girl. We're talking about the Young Jedi Knights series here... though I actually started with Junior Jedi Knights featuring Anakin Solo (oh Anakin Solo 💙💔)... going into the New Jedi Order, as I stopped following the EU so passionately around there.
Jaina, who is brash and so her father's daughter but has a harder time seeing she's also her mother's, the Rogue Squadron pilot, the wielder of a purple lightsaber, the mechanic... my inner little girl will never quite forgive the sequels for failing to give me a Solo daughter (sorry, Rey; I still think Daisey Ridley was pitch-perfect Jaina Solo casting... and honestly part of me considers the sequels the "weirdest Jacen & Jaina fan fiction ever" 🤷🏻‍♀️)
BtVS (out of the whole Whedonverse really): Buffy
Tumblr media
My other favorites in the show are really also doubles/foils for Buffy: Cordelia Chase & Faith. But the first episode of the show I ever saw was "Anne" and so I've always known I would watch an entire show with just Buffy (... I would also watch an entire show of her friends dealing with her absence, but that's more about *plot* than character). I love the concept alone of Buffy's character - overturning the blonde damsel in distress trope by making her what monsters fear - but I mostly just love her; favorite Chosen One ever. “No weapons, no friends, no hope. Take all that away, and what's left?"/"Me."
...and now it gets very hard, where my early choices were more instinctive and now I keep thinking of others and can't decide. Tempted to make a bracket (I feel like Sirius and Inigo have some crossover, but how could I put them against each other)?
But ("if you had to choose, if you had to choose") to get at some of my other favorite character types and embodiments thereof...
2010-me would never believe I'm going to say this, but: Jaime Lannister.
Tumblr media
I'm usually not a villain girl... but of course, he isn't a villain, though he starts out cast in that light. Slightly annoyed I’m picking Game of Thrones (yes, even grouping the books in that, as post Storm of Swords, I remember thinking "this could really benefit from the tightening the show will likely give it" ahahahahahahaha whoops). And yet. Where did that "came for the Starks; stayed for the Lannisters" quote come from? I feel very attacked by it.
"The things I do for love". The boy who wanted to be Arthur Dayne and somewhere along the way became the Smiling Knight. The reveal that he's not (or at least so much MORE than) who he seemed : perhaps not the comparison you'd expect but ah yes that Mr. Darcy twist always does it for me. So much character development (let's not speak of how the show ended, but still).
The motives, in particular:  I love the Spike backstory reveal in Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Fool for Love, and in many ways I think Spike and Jaime hit the same note for me. He’s definitely a character that stays with me. Also, he hits that "golden boy" type I also like but in a *very* interesting way (and oh no now mentioning golden boy is making me think of Aron and Cal in East of Eden, I don't have room to even consider them on this list but know I love them both...)
Speaking of golden boys (also I cannot believe this is the only character from a musical I'm choosing, and Eponine’s a character that haunts me too, but...)
Enjolras.
Tumblr media
Michael Maguire is not a golden Enjolras but was my introduction to the character and still a (the?) favorite. Love both book & musical Enjolras in different ways. But inspiring idealists with the light of rebellion abalaze in their eyes...? Facing death & despair still waving the flag? Ah yes. Top ten, 10/10.
Favorite detective out of all mysteries really, but especially from the Nancy Drew & Hardy Boys Super Mysteries: Nancy Drew.
Tumblr media
An icon. Why is it so hard to have a good Nancy Drew adaptation? (The new TV series lost me with going with actual ghosts - I love my supernatural shows, but I don't need that with Nancy Drew.) Detective characters tend to be some of my favorites; honorable mention to Shawn Spencer from Psych here, but I was reminded in watching that recently (as Maggie Lawson, Jules on Psych, had once played Nancy Drew in a Disney movie! ... that I need to find and rewatch as I remember almost nothing about it) a) how much I love a good mystery and b) that Nancy is the OG.
Speaking of icons... out of all the folklore & mythology I love, it’s clear what character I love best: Robin Hood.
Tumblr media
Oh, I love my Arthurian knights, but I love all Robin Hoods more. Trickster heroes, rob-from-the-rich-and-give-to-the-poor-justice, true love... cheeky 1952-movie Robin Hood is my favorite - both favorite Robin and favorite Marian, and their childhood-friends-to-lovers romance is the epitome of that trope for me! - but I also love the fox version...and am very alarmed at the prospect of a CGI remake of that; I'm sorry but that is not live action... and also Errol Flynn! It has to be Robin. If this was a ranked list (it’s not) he’d probably take #1.
My ten slots won out to other characters, but also I love every Tamora Pierce character and if I had to pick one, it would be Daine Sarrasri, YA fantasy heroine out of all magical girls (and yes over the lady knights; sorry Alanna and Kel; Daine had wolves for friends). Also shout out that I love a LOT of characters named Marian, aside the already-mentioned Maid Marian -- Marian Ravenwood (& Indy!), Marian ‘the Librarian’ Paroo (& Harold Hill!), X-Men’s Rogue (usually named Anna Marie when a name’s revealed, but a Marian in at least one version, & her own thief Gambit)... to quote Thin Man, “You got types?”
I’ve got types.
If you’re reading this and have types yourself, please @ me them! But tagging, if you’d like, @conniecorleone @aliform @aurorawest @vivacephoenix @justkeeponthegrass

Party Preparations!
October 4th and 5th are dates of utmost importance for the Ushiromiya family. They were fateful days when all of their collective sins came to a tragic conclusion. They were the days when the Golden Witch Beatrice revived. They were the days when a little girl lost her whole family. They were the days when said little girl managed to see her family once again and become a grown woman.
But none of those things are happening at October 4th and 5th in Spirale City. The past must not be forgotten, but a truth of the future supercedes a truth of the past. If these days come to be associated with a joyful party at the city’s consciousness instead, then the hosts will be satisfied. There is no need of a massacre for them to reach the Golden Land tonight.
Tumblr media
Work began at the mansion early in the morning. King Knight (@gildedusurper) was busy decorating the main hall, which actually benefitted from his perchant to add golden details to everything (the hosts are Golden Witches, after all). Lothric and Lorian (@ashes-of-omelas) arrived with their decorated pumpkins to be put at the main hall too, alongside others Beato made the goats carve for the main hall and the outside. ...At least the goats’ pumpkins have heart to them. On the second floor, Jon Kent (@smallblueboyscout) flew non stop to prepare props that’d make a hide-and-seek game the most interesting. Harley Quinn (@harliquinn) delighted herself at adding little pranks here and there at the escape room. Well, I guess that as long as she follows the plan laid out by the activity’s overseer, it should be alright. Riruka Dokugamine (@shouyoku) miiiight be going a bit overboard with the ‘cute’ factor at the parlor. This looks like the sort of place that’d please Lambdadelta a lot. Lastly for the decoration crew, Yomiel (@hosttrick) sure knows how to prepare an environment with just the perfect touch of ‘spooky’ for a room where ghost stories will occur. All of these people were assisted by either one of the Stakes, a Chiester or a goat butler, depending on their availability.
Things were just as agitated at the kitchen. Travis Touchdown (@suplex51) was ready to show off his skills with a couple kitchen knives and a wooden spoon! Burritos, pasta and smaller salty snacks are just some of the things he pulled masterfully. Meanwhile, on another bench, Balbok (@tallorc) was carefully decorating a portion of bru-mill that he couldn’t wait to present to everyone in party. Let’s just hope that the strong smell that and his other meaty dishes emit won’t startle the sensitive nose of one Toriel (@baaternal), who was facing the oven to get another batch of cookies out of it. The previous batches, plus other baked goods she had prepared, were being checked by Jet (@blackvwatch), who was also giving them final decorating touches, besides moving left and right to assist anyone in need. Leading them all was, of course, the Ushiromiya family’s head butler, Ronove.
Food and drinks also gently catered by some sponsored partners, as goats waited at the entrance to bring them in. Hansol Yi (@fcxrcin) was proud to provide her matcha and matcha based treats, specialties of her restaurant, NokNok Cafe. For those with a more Western taste, Reines El-Melloi Archisorte (@princesselmelloi), owner of The London Fog, was ready to cover you, for she brought classic teas like Earl Grey, coffee and some desserts she usually serves at her store. Those of legal age can also be satisfied, for even the so called Emperor of the Universe, Lord Freeza (@coldcessor) was willing to assist with the party, his role being of catering alcoholic drinks - especially the ones from wine variety. And of course, this can’t be a Halloween Party worth its name without the most important component of all: candies! Thankfully, we can count on Nicholas St. North (@odetotoys) to bring those.
And there were more things being brought to the mansion besides that!  GANG☆STAR, the ever growing clothing brand on Spirale City, was gentle enough to provide some extra costumes to any partygoer who either doesn’t bring any or wishes to change their current ones; all negotiated with Shaundi (@adrenalxna), as her boss is currently out of commission. Riruka was here not only to assist with decorations, but also to bring costumes from her own shop, Atelier Softcoeur! Assisting the arrangement of the clothing space was Kanji Tatsumi (@ziodie), who will later assist with fixing those poor costumes that get themselves into accidents. Oh, and speaking of Riruka, she and Rantaro Amami (@seizonka) still have to handle makeup assistance to guests later tonight! Good thing Rantaro can help organizing the space for that right now. Last but no less important, the famous horror writer and owner of Owl’s Books, Sen Tatatsuki (@bubonem), was more than happy to provide some books from her horror collection to serve as reading material for the ghost stories section to happen tonight.
It’s important to assure the wellbeing and health of people in a party, especially one with so many guests. Thankfully, there is a medical team ready to tend to any injuries or malaise folks can experience here! Right now, the designated medical room is being filled with tablets, medicine bottles, gauze and other medical tools by Litchi Faye-Ling (@kuyuzhishi), Angela Thompson (@caducenurse), Moira O’Deorain (@bitterscience) and Jean-Baptiste Augustin (@imotel). .....Hopefully there will be no conflict between them tonight.
The technical aspect of a high production event like this is also very important to be properly checked beforehand. Peridot (@kindergardening), owner of Facet Five, is currently busy checking each spotlight one by one. I hope she doesn’t mind some light harrassing by Gaap, one of the demons under the hosts’ service. Back in the escape room, Maggie (@tragiclittlebonbon) is having lots of fun setting up the devices that must go up during the game sessions. She needs to make sure they are replayable many times. Leo Valdez (@vldeztm) is checking every nook and cranny on the musical stage set up at the main hall, so that no screw is left out of place. The computer that will play accompanying audio for the musical presentations (and overall play sound effects during the party) is being checked by one Dirk Strider (@failedprince). If he were his relative, maybe he’d even be giving his opinion on what songs to play tonight.
Tumblr media
At last, night arrives. People begin arriving to the Ushiromiya mansion even before the alloted time. Once one enters the rose garden, they’d be able to see a couple creatures roaming around the area. Some are ‘normal’ animals. Others are fantastical looking creatures belonging to Battler Ushiromiya. Two people tend to the garden and the creatures in it: Rey (@dawnarose) and Doomguy (@painsawd). The duo is not physically similar at all, but both carry the same passion at making sure the creatures are well cared for, besides inviting arriving guests to leave their own pets at the garden during the party’s duration.
A figure waits for those who arrive at the main entrance. The Witch of Finite, Publius Virgilia Maro (@thefinitewitch), receives everyone with a warm smile, making sure to direct everyone to a seat. She gives off an elegant vibe, even though she is wearing 80′s styled clothing that only Beatrice could have convinced her of putting. Passing by her, one would be faced directly with the main hall, which is covered in decorations and tables and chairs and a stage and, of course, a painting of Beatrice herself. Every table on the main hall has a gift basket full of homemade Halloween snacks over it, which guests can take home. Those who leave the party to go home without one can receive a basket from Virgilia as they pass by her again.
Security is tight tonight. Besides the presence of the hosts’ faithful furniture in every room, some citizens of Spirale are working tonight to keep the festivities safe for everyone. Enkidu (@lancerofclay) is standing by the entrance alongside Virgilia, much like they did at the last party. New to the city and to these parties as general, Mike Chiton (@motorcitymutt) is taking his time to admire the main hall’s visual - without forgetting his duty, of course. As the owner of Sanctuary Moon Security, Murderbot (@yoursecunit) is ever vigilant, his focus being at the parlor and dinner room areas. ...I’m not sure how Ludwig the Holy Blade (@holyequine) has managed to squeeze at the corridors leading to the costume and medical rooms, but he seems to be doing his job well, so why complain?
Waiters are already serving people left and right with treats fresh from the kitchen and drinks. Koku (@looking-for-four) seems to be more focused on the main door entrance than the guests he tends to. Perhaps he is expecting someone in particular to arrive, even if in vain. Ooops, looks like one of the waiters left a drink drop - ah, it was Touma Kamijou (@illusiionbreaker). Poor guy doesn’t get a break for his bad luck even here. As for Giselle (@angelicqualia), she seems to be enjoying the chance to socialize with people and learn more about the holiday. Don’t worry, your salary for this service will be way more than enough to compensate for your uniform. Somehow, Rantaro has chosen to work as both a makeup artist and a waiter during the party. I guess only an Ultimate Survivor could pull that off without dying...
...At last, the clocks hits 7PM. The lights go out, as they’re substituted by the arrival of golden butterflies who gently fly around the whole manor. It seems like the party will officially begin at any moment...

Baruch Haba!
Welcome to all visitors and sundry other travelers of the night!  Thanks for stopping by and I’m happy you’re here. If you’d like to filter out material from the newest comics, filter the tag “latest release.”
This started out as just a place for me to record things I found of interest as I read through all of Moon Knight’s 616 comic book appearances, but since (surprisingly????) some individuals seem interested in following along, I thought I would make a bit of an information post.
Post content
Typically, I try to stick to posting just the panel/s of note and a source citation.  I would highly encourage those who are interested to look up or purchase the original comics themselves, as the comic book industry could always use more support (and I at least would value hearing all of your opinions).
Citation format (bit of a mutated MLA style): “Individual Comic Title,” Comic Book Title (vol. #/year of volume’s first issue), #issue number. Writer: name; Penciler: name; Inker: name; Colorist: name; Letterer: name (Let me know if I miss anything or if any of you would like me to add anything more that might be of use).
Tags
Tagging System: At the moment, my current system involves tagging, amongst other things, the name of the cited comic book and reoccurring characters that appear on panel.  Note: I try to tag “Steven Grant” or “Jake Lockley” whenever those alters are either mentioned or when fronting so as best to facilitate archiving purposes.  After that you can find any personal comments I might have in the tags, which you can read or ignore entirely at your own convenience.  What I have to say isn’t critical; I’m just here to read comics hahaha
Some Commonly Used Tags:
1. Let’s get this bread: started as a joke about Marc’s insistence on using the term “bread” in reference to money in his first appearances, but now I use it to tag comic book covers and the beginning of when I start posting about a new comic book issue.  I also use “let’s get this other bread” for variant covers.
2. Comics are why my sense of humor is broken: I blame learning to read via the 1963 Amazing Spider-Man comics for why I love really corny humor.  Expect to find groan-inducingly bad jokes and general comic book wackiness within this tag.
3. Sometimes comics are bad and I hate them: As much as I admittedly love comic books, there are some thematic elements endemic to the comic book industry (as a relic of the times they were published or due to creator biases) that are not, nor in many cases never have been, okay.  Filter out this tag if you would rather screen posts for racist, misogynist, or ableist content.
4. Where’s Moony: For when Moon Knight’s lurking in the background as a cameo.
A derivative of this tag is “Moon Knight is in this issue I swear.” My initial goal to post the cover of every comic book issue Moon Knight has appeared in has backfired a little in that some appear to be non-sequiturs.  But yeah there’s a Moon Knight cameo I swear
5. Knight Mail: My responses to any asks I may get.
6. Not Moony: I’ll try to limit the off-topic content as much as possible but sometimes other things do catch my interest.
Let me know if there’s anything else you would like for me to add here and I’ll look into it.  Thanks again for following along and welcome to the Midnight Mission!

I SWEAR TO ALL THAT’S UNHOLY, MEG!!!!
Also @journeythroughtherain, your questions will be answered in one heap.
1.       What is your preferred place to write (notebook, laptop, cellphone, etc.)?
Laptop when I have access to one and notebook when I’m travelling.
2.       When did you start writing?
When I was but a wee, 15 yo kitling.
3.       What is your favorite thing to write?
Romance, though I’m pretty good with crach humor fics as well.

I either steal some time at work or write in the living room.
10.   Can you give us a sneak peek on your current WIP?
Sure! Have some mer!AU:
“Until one day, somethingchanges. it’s almost closing time at the aquarium, and he’s been in the back ofthe tank, lingering in the shadows for the better part of the day. The visitorswere especially noisy today, constantly poking and knocking at the glass, thevibrations rattling his bones.
He’s glad for the comfort the man-made structures ofhis tank provide, where the artificial lights aren’t as bright, aren’t aspainful on his eyes.
Someone stops near his house and home and he grimaces, waits for the knocking to start.
None does for the longest of time - the announcementto hurry up and leave blaring through the aquarium already - and finally, cautiously,he peeks out. There’s a boy in front of his tank, his image distorted by glassand water alike but he’s simply standing there, patient and silent andunmoving.
And so he swims out, shows himself as he is becausehe’s suddenly curious about this bubble gum-colored twig of a boy.
Once he’s up close, he sees that the boy looks likethe seashells he dreams about sometimes - he’s all cream and pink, with sharp, sharp edges he wants to test his fingers against.”
11.   How many stories have you written so far?
AO3 has 27 works, but there’s a bunch over at ff.net as well and over atlivejournal, not to mention the ones I never published anywhere. Consideringhow productive I was during my JRock phase and my anime/manga years, I think itcircles between 100-150 so not overly much?

Warning!! Long post ahead (LOL)
I’ve been meaning to do one of these for a while now. Quite a few friends and followers have asked me ‘what big influences can you think of that have inspired you as an artist/creator?’
A lot of movies, games, books, tv series, artists, and writers have influenced my drawing style and storytelling - some of them more so than others. (As represented by the larger squares in the image)
So here we go!! The numbers for each inspiration were chosen at random, the order doesn’t have any significance lol
1. Cardcaptor Sakura - (and the works of CLAMP in general I suppose because I read them all) Cardcaptor Sakura wasn’t my first manga but it holds a really special place in my heart because it’s lore and depictions of love has influenced my storytelling a LOT. I was obsessed with CLAMP and their art style when I was young to the point I would trace their drawings to learn and emulate their style.  To this day I feel like it left a big impact on my art style especially.
2. Cyborg 009 - When I was a kid my parents told me and my brother that we couldn’t afford cable TV and reduced our service to the news channels and public broadcasting.  We didn’t have cable TV for several years and when we finally got it back when I was 12, one of the FIRST TV programs I saw was Cyborg 009. I was just beginning to understand what anime was, since the only anime I’d seen was before our cable got cut, and I was so young I didn’t know it WAS anime. I immediately fell in love with Cyborg 009. I  loved the characters, the story, everything - and I still do! It was the beginning of my exploration of the anime genre as a whole haha
3. ‘The Twelve Kingdoms’ book series  - Around the same time I started watching Cyborg 009, I began getting into manga. While browsing the section in the bookstore one day I came across the first novel in The Twelve Kingdoms series. I was surprised to find a novel in the manga section and decided to browse through it. I couldn’t put it down! The rich world building and storytelling pulled me in and left me wanting more. I devoured the entire book series and the way the world was brought to life really stuck with me and influenced my own world building.
4. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles - my very first Final Fantasy game, and it was a spinoff title to boot! I was drawn in by the dark, melancholic world and cute graphics. I played this game a lot with my friends and even though multiplayer was a nightmare to set up, we had so much fun. I wasn’t able to beat it until I was 16, and the story left me in tears. The Crystal Chronicles games as  whole have left a HUGE impact on me, but the first one especially so.
5. Sonic the Hedgehog - My first game ever! My brother and I first played Sonic the Hedgehog 2 when we were around 3 or 4 years old. We were hooked on our parent’s Sega Genesis system and Sonic was our favorite! When we’d get home from school we’d fight over who got to play first in single player, eventually we settled on a system, My brother would play sonic, and since Tails couldn’t die even if he ran out of rings, I would fight all the boss battles as Tails while my brother tried to keep Sonic out of the way. Using this system we made it all the way up to Metal Sonic but could never beat him. We’d have 99 lives too because we knew ALL the secrets of the game LOL. I’ve played most of the Sonic titles since then, including my favorite, Sonic Adventure 2: Battle.
6. Sailor Moon - my ‘first’ anime. I was very young when I first saw this anime. I didn’t even know what anime was! But the portrayal of girl power and how strong all the female characters were really stuck out to me, raised as I was in a women-are-inferior-and-should-serve-their-husbands religious household. Sailor Jupiter was my favorite because she was a tomboy and wore ponytails just like me haha
7. Fullmetal Alchemist - I think I’ve touched on this before, but I have had really weak bones since I was a little kid. In middle school I was constantly on and off of crutches or in and out of wheelchairs with broken bones and such. (I blame being a huge clutz) It got to the point my classmates started calling me ‘calamity Jane’ and making fun of me. To that dorky middle school girl with crutches and leg braces, Edward Elric was my HERO. Disability representation matters folks! It certainly helped me through a rough time in my life.
8. The works of Studio Ghibli - My first Ghibli movie was My Neighbor Totoro, and I’ve been hooked ever since. I actually managed to get my mom into them too, so now we can have mother/daughter quality bonding time over new Ghibli movies when they come out. It gives us a lot of fond memories together and I enjoy those times I get to spend with her. Mom and I may not see eye to eye all the time, but I truly treasure the memories I have of watching Ghibli films with her.
9. Odin Sphere - This one is more recent, and one I blame @heebiejeebiejade for. I love everything about it. The story, the art, the characters!   It tore my heart out and the writing is just superb I love it so much. and the ART my god it’s so beautiful.
10. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles the Crystal Bearers - I decided I needed to make this one separate from the earlier Crystal Chronicles section. Mostly because this game HEAVILY influenced and changed my life. Not only is it my favorite game ever, it brought me to many of my current friendships! If not for this game I never would have met @heebiejeebiejade @killerkitty4 @indestructiblemoog @shadyfolk @ninjamonkeystudios and SOOOOO many others. These friendships mean a great deal to me. They’ve changed and shaped who I am today and I’m truly grateful for them, and they never would have been possible without Crystal Bearers.
11. Dragonball - Another one of those I never knew it was Anime cartoons I watched as a young child. I loved Dragonball and later Dragonball Z. The characters, the storytelling, the fight scenes, I loved it all because it was so different from what I was used to seeing in American cartoons. My brother and I would have Super Saiyan battles in our backyard throwing Kamehamehas at each other and laughing and generally annoying our neighbors XD
12. Over the Garden Wall - Another more recent influence. Over the Garden Wall was one of the first new cartoons that grabbed my attention due to it’s great pacing and creepy Americana storytelling. Mysteries, ghosts, the afterlife, purgatory, this show dealt with a lot of creepy things while simultaneously making it funny and endearing. I rewatch it often and it’s one of my favorites.
13. Legend of Mana and the Seiken Densetsu Series - Again, I blame @heebiejeebiejade entirely for this. She sent me a huge box with every game in the Seiken Densetsu series in it along with the guidebooks saying “you HAVE to play these.” I knew she liked them so I gave them a try and YEP as per usual with anything Jade introduces me to, they COMPLETELY DESTROYED ME. Love, sacrifice, life, death, and rebirth, are a huge part of these title’s storytelling and they drew me in completely. Legend of Mana and Dawn of Mana especially. Their world building and plot devices may or may not have heavily influence my own XD
14. The ‘Stravaganza’ book series - The first time I picked up a Stravaganza book title was when I was twelve and found this really shiny book in a used bookstore for $3. It featured a picture of Venice, and a pair of violet eyes staring at you from behind a shiny silver mask on the cover. I’m not sure why It spoke to me, it just did. I bought it and finished it within a day. That book was titled City of Masks and I loved it a lot! And then I found out there were more! An entire series! The books featured time travel and dimensional travel, espionage and intrigue! I read and devoured them all and to this day I hold out hope for a final volume to finish the series.
15. Avatar: the Last Airbender - At age 12 I dismissed Avatar as a kid show originally. I scoffed at it and laughed at my little brother for being so into it. Then I saw the first episode. And it was then that I knew what a mistake I had made. I know a LOT of people love Avatar, and for good reason! I don’t have to go super in-depth here because I’m sure most of you already know how great it is. It’s definitely influenced both my art style and my storytelling.
16. Hikaru no Go - This one’s special. When I was in high school I was bullied a LOT. Like, people writing DIE YOU WHORE in my textbooks and putting thumb tacks in my gym shoes kind of bullying. They’d touch me and then pretended that they’d die of the plague. That if anyone had a crush on me they were worse than trash. The kind of bullying that made me a bit suicidal in my teen years. Lucky for me my mother had bought me a copy of Monthly Shonen Jump in early 2005, She knew that I liked manga and thought it would be the perfect magazine gift for me for valentine’s day. Boy was she right and one of the manga featured in it was Hikaru no Go. I loved the art style, and the storytelling. I was instantly captivated by the characters and I wanted to know what happened next. I soon subscribed to SJ monthly and eagerly awaited the next installment each month. What this meant was that whenever I was feeling like I wanted to end it all, I’d remember that I didn't’ know what happened next and would wait. I honestly believe that Hikaru no Go is at least partially responsible for me making it out of high school alive, and I treasure it to this day. (Also I’m on anti-depressants now so don’t worry about me y’all okay? XD) There was another manga like this, but I'mnot sure how to feel about that one anymore :(
17. Magic Knight Rayearth - I know I’ve already listed CLAMP as a heavy influence on me, but I felt Magic Knight Rayearth deserved it’s own place because it was my first manga ever! I’d seen the commercial for the anime on one of my old DVDs way back when, and I was already intereseted in it when I happened to find the manga in a bookstore! I bought it and reread the first volume a dozen times before I even found the second ahaha. I must have read the complete set a hundred times now and let me tell you the twist ending of the first part kills me every time! The first of my manga obsession ahaha
18. Tales of the Abyss and The ‘Tales of’ game series - Tales of the Abyss was my first (and still my favorite) Tales game, and since then I’ve played almost all of them! They definitely influenced my character designs, most of my friends comment on how Tales-like my costumes are ahaha
19. The 'Riyria’ book series - The most recent novel series I’ve read. It’s got everything I’d ever want to see in a novel, it’s so great and the story is so deep and intriguing! I recommend everyone to read it, it’s a MUST READ for sure!
20. Journey - The first time I played this game I cried for three hours. I felt like I’d just had a religious and spiritual experience far beyond what I’d ever experienced in a video game before. It was just something so… beyond me. I recommend everyone to play this game at least once in their lifetime. I can’t really form the words to express what it means to me. It’s just something you’d have to experience for yourself.
21. Ico: Castle in the Mist and Shadow of the Colossus - Another famous one lol a LOT of people love these games but In particular I want to bring attention to the Ico novelization, Ico: Castle in the Mist. I really enjoyed the novel and it’s worldbuilding. The games will always be special to me, but that novel man. That novel.
22. Yu Yu Hakusho - One of my guilty favorites! I first saw Yu Yu Hakusho when I was 16 and I’ve loved it ever since! I’ve always been fascinated with spirits and the occult, but I definitely had to hide this one from my religious parents.
23. Black Cat - Honestly this one surprises me. I love those secret identity and hidden horrible past animes and this one definitely fits that bill. I think this one established my favorite tropes in my life more than anything else.
24. A Bride’s Story - Two words. THE ART. MY GOD THE ART. This manga, in addtion to being a really great read, has some of the most detailed artwork I’ve ever seen. It’s influenced me greatly and I encourage everyone to read it.
25. Bravely Default - Bravely Default definitely influenced my story building and characters, it was one of the first 3DS games that really captivated me and drew me into its world!
26. Yu-Gi-Oh!! - Another series I had to hide from my parents ahah This anime was something I really loved in my childhood. Again, I really love ghosts and spirits and things like that so this anime was probably what started it all!
27. Fire Emblem Awakening and the Fire Emblem Series - Awakening was my first Fire Emblem game (Cue whining from the FE purists LOL) but since then I’ve played them all! (Including the JP only ones don’t start with me haters ahahahaha) The storytelling and bonds between the characters really resonated with me and it’s become one of my favorite game series!
28. The ‘Legend of Zelda’ game series - The repeating themes of good vs evil throughout the Legend of Zelda games really struck a chord with me, especially when I was young. Twilight Princess and Wind Waker especially influenced me. “A Sword has no strength unless the hand that wields it has courage.” Is something that has suck with me for a long time, and something that encourages me and helps me get through my everyday life.
29. The Final Fantasy Series - Final Fantasy has had a HUGE impact on my life. I already gave Crystal Chronicles it’s due, now it’s the numbered titles turn! Final Fantasy has influenced my life in ways I couldn’t have imagined ten years ago even! I’ve played them all (Except 11, curse having no internet as a teenager!) and they’ve definitely shaped my lore and world building skills!
30. Naruto - Okay I’ll admit it! I was Naruto weeboo trash in highschool!!! Oh woe is me!! Just kidding! I honestly still love Naruto, and it’s something that really stuck with me for a long time, since it’s one of the first anime I saw (after learning what anime was ahaha)
31. Gravity Falls - How can I put this… Hmmmm. Gravity Falls has heavily influenced my character building. I love it’s characters. Don’t get me wrong I love the story too! But the characters are honestly what kept me coming back for more! Not to mention that epic foreshadowing in season one. Yep.
32. Spiral: The Bonds of Reasoning - Another one of my favorite manga in Highschool that oddly helped me through my depression. The main character’s struggles sort of resonated with me and helped my healing process in my late teens and early twenties.
33. Final Fantasy XII - Okay WORLDBUILDING. Let’s talk about worldbuilding because MY GOD has Final Fantasy XII have it. I love the Ivalice games in general, but the amount of effort put into 12 having a world that feels like it’s alive is astounding to be honest. The world truly feels like it’s alive, and it drew me in for over 400 hours of gameplay on Playstation 2. To this day it’s the game I have logged the most hours into.
34. Radiant Historia - What drew me in here was TIME TRAVEL and STORY AND WORLDBUILDING. This game is a hidden gem in the Nintendo DS’s extensive library. It doesn’t have the best graphics or even the best gameplay mechanics, but it didn’t matter to me because the story kept me coming back for more! By far one of my favorite games ever. (Pssst go play it, it got a remake for 3DS)
35. Final Fanasy XIV - This one is a favorite, not just because of it’s story and world building - both of which are excellent btw - but because of the connections I’ve made through it. I have made so many friends online through this game, friends that make me feel better about myself as a person, and who’ve stuck with me through the hard times along with the good.
36. Mushishi - We’ve established that I love ghosts and spirits and things, but this series made me love connecting it with nature, something that has heavily influenced my writing and my own webcomic!
37. Voltron - Mostly the first two seasons. Beast King Golion was one of my first super sentai anime as a child, and I loved seeing it remade! It was like getting to revisit my childhood
38. Gundam SEED and the Gundam Series - Okay Gundam has influenced me throughout my life, starting with Gundam Wing when I was six years old, and continuing on to this day. The one I’ve watched the most times though, is Gundam SEED, and it’s influenced my characters and storytelling a lot!
Wow, congrats to whoever manged to read this far. You’re really determined I’ll give you that! Thanks for reading!

Since I featured some of my absolute fave comics featuring strong, complex, interesting female characters yesterday — a post with plenty of covers to swoon over — for today's Cover Love post, I thought we'd take a look at a couple of my favorites that I haven't read. So, disclaimer: these seem to have strong, complex, interesting female characters, too, but as I haven't read them yet... your guess is as good as mine.
I have to confess, I actually have a read a tiny bit of this one. But I got distracted by something else, let it expire on Hoopla, and never circled back to give it another try. But this vibrant neon cover catches my eye EVERY TIME I browse the comics section...
From BRIAN K. VAUGHAN, #1 New York Times bestselling writer of SAGA and THE PRIVATE EYE, and CLIFF CHIANG, legendary artist of Wonder Woman, comes the first volume of an all-new ongoing adventure. In the early hours after Halloween of 1988, four 12-year-old newspaper delivery girls uncover the most important story of all time. Suburban drama and otherworldly mysteries collide in this smash-hit series about nostalgia, first jobs, and the last days of childhood. Collects PAPER GIRLS #1-5.
HOW HAVEN'T I READ THIS YET?
Lunella Lafayette is a preteen genius who wants to change the world, but lives in fear of the Inhuman genes inside her! Now, Lunella's life is turned upside down when a red-scaled beast is teleported from the prehistoric past to a far-flung future we call...today! Together they're the most Marvelous Team-Up of all — Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur! But will they be BFFs forever, or just until DD's dinner time? And Lunella soon learns that there are other problems with having a titanic T-Rex as a pet in the modern-day Marvel Universe. School, for one. Monster hunters are another — especially when they're the Totally Awesome Hulk! Then there's the fact that everyone's favorite dino didn't journey through time alone. Beware the prehistoric savages known as the Killer-Folk — New York City's deadliest tourists!
Welp. I think this will be in the next batch of comics I read on Hoopla.
Barbara Thorson, a girl battling monsters both real and imagined, kicks butt, takes names, and faces her greatest fear in this bittersweet, coming-of-age story called "Best Indy Book of 2008" by IGN
I've heard such mixed things on this series that I haven't picked it up yet, but basically, every cover, and every variation of every cover, is just gorgeous.
The Wicked + the Divine follows a young teenage girl, Laura, as she interacts with the Pantheon, a group of twelve people who discover that they are reincarnated deities. This discovery grants them fame and supernatural powers, with the stipulation that they will die within two years – part of a ninety-year cycle known as the Recurrence.
Okay, it seems more than a little self-indulgent to have yourself as the cover illustration (and I'm assuming, main character?) in a comic you helped co-write, so I see you, Amandla Stenberg. But the cover did catch my eye, and the interior art looks very dreamy and inviting.
“What becomes of the child who has lost her spirit?” NIOBE: She is Life is a coming of age tale of love, betrayal, and ultimate sacrifice. Niobe Ayutami is an orphaned wild elf teenager and also the would-be savior of the vast and volatile fantasy world of Asunda. She is running from a past where the Devil himself would see her damned… toward an epic future that patiently waits for her to bind nations against the hordes of hell. The weight of prophecy is heavy upon her shoulders and the wolf is close on her heels.
Honorable Mention:
This one is less a cover-love (I mean, the cover's fine, but not necessarily a stand out), but this is definitely a synopsis love: I. Am. Intrigued.
When all the men in Mancastle get eaten by a dragon, the women take over! Now the blacksmith’s wife Merinor is King, Princess Aeve is the Captain, and the only remaining (and least capable) knight Sir Riddick is tasked with teaching the ladies of the castle how to defend against all manner of monsters! Novelist Delilah S. Dawson (Star Wars: The Perfect Weapon, As Wicked as She Wants, Wake of Vultures) brings her first original series to comics, and is joined by breakthrough illustrators Ashley A. Woods (Niobe: She Is Life) and Becca Farrow for a rollicking fantasy adventure featuring women reclaiming their lives on their terms. Collects issues the complete limited series.
Let me know your thoughts on these covers, and any comics and graphic novels that have caught YOUR eye, based on cover alone, in the comments! And make sure to check out the rest of the girl power comics-inspired posts that have gone up this week! via The Book Rat
