‘Tsuzuru thrust his hand out and shot a Rune forward, shattering the iron padlock and chain completely. Izumi didn’t miss a beat, sprinting ahead of them and kicking the door open as hard as she could.
“STOP!” she screamed at the top of her lungs.
The lone figure inside, swathed in black, turned around to face her with eyes wide open.
No. Eye wide open. Singular. An eyepatch was covering the left one.’
I was rereading flavovitta’s amazing urban fantasy AU fic, Of Covens and Magicians / ocam (if you haven’t read it, what are you doing????) and when I read this scene, I decided i HAD to draw it. I love this bit so much, just the whole chapter. I wish there was an OCAM manga or anime or anything! It’s such an incredible piece of writing, I’d recommend it even if you aren’t into A3!. This was quite a while ago, so the style is a little different to what I normally do these days, but I’m still super proud of it! I wanted to give it a dark, dramatic, cinematic feel to it. How did I do?

dissecting companion exits: a doctor who rant in the year 2024
So it's been over a month since I did that Doctor Who podcast, which has miraculously got me back on my Doctor Who bullshit, and after "The Giggle", I've been thinking a lot about companion exits, and how they worked for me and how they worked both inside and out of the narrative. And because what else is social media for than ranting about fiction, here I am.
I find it really interesting how in both Moffat and RTD Who, many of the exits work more successfully outside of the narrative than inside of it, yet for completely different reasons.
Like, "The Giggle" really emphasised how ridiculously tragic the Moffat companion exits were. And while I can't speak for Bill as I haven't watched her series, for both Amy and Clara, those exits didn't make much sense inside the narrative. Amy and Clara could have had non-tragic exits. Amy's run in particular seemed to be working towards her and Rory choosing to stop travelling with the Doctor. They weren't doing it full time, they were getting older (it was highlighted how Amy needed reading glasses now), and it would have made solid character and thematic sense to have them choose to end this chapter in their lives. To focus on their careers, and maybe have kids, and find the joy in the slow path. A slow wind down--a bittersweet yet poignant departure--would not have been untoward.
Clara could have left that way too. She could have either walked off into the sunset with Danny Pink (if he hadn't been killed off. Because he was killed off, right?) or found some other calling. Embracing teaching at Coal Hill. Teaching on another planet. Anything! But I think in both cases, Moffat wanted his "Doomsday", and so what made logical narrative sense took a backseat. These exits worked more outside of the story--"because the showrunner wanted tragedy"--than inside.
Donna, I think, could have also had a non-tragic exit. I know her tragic ending has been reversed, but if Donna had two series instead of one, I think an ending where she chose to leave the Doctor would have been possible. I mean, she loved travelling, but it's clear that she also wanted to do things like get married and have a family, and I think if she had one more series (or was in all four specials), she could have had a Jo Grant exit. But they couldn't get Catherine Tate for another series/all four specials, and RTD was set on leaving before Series 5, so Donna doesn't.
And the constraints of TV filmmaking are what I believe hampered the RTD companion exits. And there are two major ones: actor availability and the time the BBC allowed him to tell his stories.
Granted, while having two tragic exits that weigh on the Tenth Doctor and contribute to him going all "Time Lord Victorious" could have been the plan all along, assuming it wasn't, both Donna and Rose's exits make the most sense when read from an outside perspective: neither Catherine Tate or Billie Piper had signed on for more full episodes.
Rose's second exit, in particular, is the poster child for "outside the narrative" storytelling. I mean, when the Doctor says "But you've got to [stay in the parallel universe]", you nearly expect him to end that with "because your actress didn't sign on for more episodes". Outside the narrative, leaving Rose with TenToo wraps up the Doctor/Rose romance, keeps them mostly safe from the whims of future showrunners, and yet leaves Rose's story a little open-ended for the audience so they imagine whatever they want to happen in Rose's--and future Doctor's--future. Inside the narrative, however, I didn't find it particularly satisfying. The Doctor has been pining for Rose for two series. Rose has worked incredibly had to get back to him. As a character, she's crafted as someone who would stay with the Doctor forever. They have this sweeping, incredibly romantic reunion! Inside the narrative, her staying makes the most sense. It's the most satisfying ending. Especially if you don't have the space to make an ending with Rose's permanent exit gratifying.
Because like Donna and the bigeneration in "The Giggle", Rose ending up back in the parallel world could have been more satisfying if RTD had more time to build up to that exit. In general, much of "Journey's End" feels rushed, and the end of the episode is particularly bad, leaving a number of holes that never get filled. Mickey gives a very brief reason why he's staying in his home universe, but we don't see him say goodbye to Rose and Jackie. We never get a proper reunion between Rose and Jack, or resolution to Rose making Jack immortal, which she is clearly unaware of, nor do we get a goodbye between them. I remember wondering when "Journey's End" first aired, do Mickey and Jack even know that they won't see Rose again? Do they walk off with a quick "see ya later", thinking they'll meet up occasionally? Because Rose sure as hell didn't think she was leaving her home universe. And while we got TenToo on his own to establish that he is (mostly) the Doctor, we don't get much between him and Rose prior to being left on Bad Wolf Bay to build any kind of connection between them. We don't see Ten come to the decision to leave the two of them; we never really know how he feels about it. Yeah, Doctor Who is a very plot-forward show, but "Journey's End" was juggling a lot of plot and a lot of characters, and it should have been longer--or the Series 4 finale should have been a three-parter--to give both the story and characters time to breathe. The audience is left to infer A LOT, and for me it was unsatisfying at the time, and now with over a decade of distance, it's actually even more unsatisfying.
While it might seem like I have more of a problem with RTD's companion exits, I think they're more successful from a technical and audience standpoint than Moffat's. RTD has the incredible ability to write backwards, making you feel like an ending was always something that he was working towards, even when he wasn't. Although both Donna and Rose's stories could have been different given more time, and if they played out in a different medium like a novel, they still, mostly, work. Donna forgets, but gets a family and a mother who values her a little more. Rose gets both the Doctor and her parents--she doesn't have to sacrifice one for the other anymore. Moffat's, on the other hand, feel very slapdash, and I don't recall feeling like we'd been working towards them. Because, as I said, it always seemed like he was working towards a totally different ending.
I'm not entirely sure where I'm going with this, but I find the difference between Moffat and RTD's approach to companion exits really fascinating. One wanted a specific style of ending, but didn't seem to know how to foreshadow it--how to make it work as part of a cohesive narrative. The other had a strong handle on narrative and character arcs, but their ability to craft something satisfying--to give his audience all the information--was hindered by episode length. Going forward, I hope RTD can manage his time better so that the companion exit is more satisfying, like Martha's. But I also hope he takes a leaf out of Moffat's book and plans a non-tragic ending. Because Moffat did set up two fairly sold, amicable partings, and Doctor Who needs more of those again.

I don't normally do this. But this is a one-shot that I could elaborate on, prevvie :---*
For as long as he could remember, he’d felt as if something was missing. Something fundamental. A gaping hole in the puzzle that was supposedly reality. A missing piece. Maybe an odd piece, a piece that didn’t fit anywhere. Stuck in an unreachable abstraction of space and time. Outside space and time. Whatever it was, it was missing. Provoking a nagging, bone-deep, ever persistent feeling he couldn’t even begin to describe.
The world didn’t make sense without it, but he didn’t know what it was.
Even as he reached and reached and reached to unlock it through art. Through trying to unlock the subconscious parts of his mind through reformulations. Questioning everything he knew. Restructuring the aspects of the universe, the earth, the most distant and the most intimate. The cultures of the world and the trembling fibers of his heart. He’d searched everywhere. Yet, nothing.
In search for something that was constantly out of his grasp, mocking him. Hiding. Maybe it didn’t exist at all. The missing piece was an entity in itself. Invisible, free to roam without the constraints of matter. In the fifth, sixth, seventh dimension. Nowhere at all? Everywhere all at once?
Yet.
”It’s in you.” Matty was frantic beneath his measuredly calm demeanor.
George’s eyes were peering into his own. Confused. Droplets of rain dripping from strands of hair which was clinging to his face. George’s lip was quivering as his jaw trembled in response to the cold. He was beautiful, but he wasn’t it, not really. But when Matty stared him down, finding himself hypnotized by his own reflection in George’s eyes, it felt almost within reach. If he could just jump high enough. Reach into himself deep enough. Reach inside George, get inside his skin. Behind his ribs. Exist alongside his heart.
”What do you mean?”
Matty looked down onto his feet. The grass seemed greener from when he last saw it, somehow.
”Matty-” George reached a tentative hand towards Matty’s face, touch feather light just beneath his chin, and Matty submitted to the subtle gesture for him to raise his gaze. George’s brows were furrowed, but beneath it all, he looked intrigued. ”What do you mean?”
”It’s not-” Matty paused, suddenly breathless. Water was dripping down the slope of George’s nose, collecting in the dip of his cupid’s bow. He looked like what comfort felt like. Yet through the calm, the subtle dilation of his pupils, barely noticeable alongside his dark irises, provoked Matty’s pulse to flutter. ”It’s- you’re it, for me. I think.”
”You think?” George was smiling, that smile that was almost shy in its earnestness.
Matty could sense George’s eyes fluttering closed for just a second as he reached up to press a light kiss to the corner of his mouth. Leaving their faces close, for just a second. Feeling the heat radiating off of George’s cheek.
”You’re warm.” Matty mumbled instead of answering.
His palm pressed to George’s chest, feeling his heart beating beneath the damp fabric of his t-shirt. He forgot why they were even out in the rain in the first place.
”I’m freezing to death.” George replied, leaning down to press his face in the crook of Matty’s neck.
”You’re still warm.” Matty mumbled, fingers coming up to tangle in the damp curls at the nape of George’s neck. ”Your skin is.”
”Deceiving.” George whispered, pulling away from Matty’s neck to cradle his jaw. Making Matty aware of how large his hand felt against the side of his face, pointer finger reaching behind his ear to curl against the skin beneath it. His touch made Matty shiver more than the temperature in the air.
”You’re warm.” Matty decided, against George’s comment. He was too aware of his own breath against George’s thumb, resting in the air just too close to his lips. It ricocheted back onto his own face, heating it up. Making his lips hypersensitive. Or maybe that was just George.
”I love you.” It was tentative. George was shy. He’d always been, Matty adored him.
The rain was falling softer now. Almost to the point where you couldn’t feel it if you didn’t actively focus on it. Matty couldn’t tear his eyes away from George’s damp skin. Soft. Right there. The words he spoke to him. The way Matty could feel the earnestness in them.
”I love you.” There was a conviction in the words that was foreign to Matty. Passing his own lips. He felt like he’d never uttered a sentence he truly meant as much in his life. True and important.
They stayed like that for a while. Matty perplexed by George’s face. The subtle movements of his eyebrows, the slight tremble to his lips. How he bit his lower lip from time to time, in the rare moments the eye-contact they’d established was broken. He was lost in George’s eyes. They were a portal closer to it than he’d ever been. Maybe it’d been there all along. Close. Maybe close was close enough. Maybe he never needed to reach it at all.
”Can’t get enough of you.” Matty found himself saying. Too honest. Too dramatic for early twenties. ”You’re- you make me think.”
”I make you think?”
”You make me think.” Matty reiterated, resting both hands against George’s chest. It was heaving slightly. He could swear he was able to feel George’s heart thumping against his fingertips, between his ribs. Beating onto his very fingertips. Intimate. ”You’re different.”
”That’s clichéd, Matty.” George’s eyebrows were furrowed, hand still fitted perfectly against Matty’s jaw. Tightening his fingers around his earlobe. ”You say that to all the boys?”
”You know I don’t.”
George seemed as lost in Matty’s eyes as Matty was in George’s. Perplexed, transcending a threshold neither of them knew the position of. Perhaps it didn’t matter. Maybe they were both insane.
”I do.” George sounded confident. He rarely was.
”When you touch me-” Matty began, feeling his cheeks heating up. He wasn’t usually shy about things like this. Maybe because they usually weren’t earnest. There was a difference between telling someone to ”fuck you” just for the sake of it and telling someone their touch felt like you’d been transported to a dimension where everything suddenly seemed to make perfect sense. George’s face seemed to be getting closer, the tips of his fingers pressing against the back of his head. It was more intimate than anything Matty had ever experienced. Out of body.
”When you touch me,” He tried again. ”It makes sense.”
”I get it.” George’s voice sounded breathless. Almost as if overwhelmed by the storming thoughts in Matty’s head. As if they were intertwined in the most fundamental of ways. One. ”It does.”
The depth of George’s eyes made sense, then. The subtle pressure of his fingertips against the back of his head. The way his face tilted down to bring their faces closer together. Initiating a kiss in the way only George could. As if it was the most natural thing in the world. A kiss that meant something, without conditions. No before, no after. A kiss.
Lips against lips, in a way that satiated everything Matty’s brain was craving. The wet skin of George’s bottom lip between his own. The hand against the back of his head, fingers tangling in the hair at the nape of his neck, tugging at it. Gently. Matty did the same. Hands and lips and faces. Closed eyes and heaving breaths. The unreachable hanging between them. More persistent than ever.
And maybe George’s touch was just a distraction from the absence of it. Maybe it was it. Maybe it was the closest he’d ever get to it. A gateway. A preview.
Somehow it felt like it didn’t matter.
