In your personal universe, how did the Norrix t Shanghai situation play out?
Just like the weekend in general? My personal universe (that I'm turning partly into a "little" blurb in response to a couple of prompts) basically goes like:
Lando flies out of Monaco Monday morning most likely following all of his friends leaving from the previous few days Sunday evening. Rather than flying straight to Shanghai, he flies into Tokyo to spend a few days with Martin (and Louis and Menno tbh). He shows up and kind of surprises Martin because he's early by a day or two and a city. They spend a couple of days then lowkey in Tokyo under the radar. They do some cool touristy things and eat some amazing food, and it's a perfect little hideaway where they don't really run into anyone.
Martin's got some plans for work in Tokyo before the weekend officially starts though, so Lando finishes making his way to Shanghai alone and starts in on the weekend with the team and his obligations. They share a very nice phonecall Friday evening following Lando's Sprint Pole, and they both lament how close and yet how far they are from each other right now. Come Saturday morning, Martin and Louis make their way to Shanghai and sneak into the back of McLaren's garage to be there for whatever happens (especially in case anything substantial happens). Lando probably didn't go to the gig that night (and maybe for the best) because he needed to get as much asleep as possible, but Martin crawled into bed later fuming and ready to pass out as well. Lando probably lets him rant fully in the morning when they wake up.
Fast forward to the race, Martin and Louis practically sneak into the paddock and start the race in Red Bull's garage. They say hello to and hang out with Max a bit in the build-up, taking some photos and documenting some things for sponsor-related purposes (I'm specifically thinking of Louis' few insta pics). A little before half race distance, when the first virtual-safety car gets tripped, Martin tugs Louis towards the exit and they make the short trip down to McLaren. They flash their McLaren-specific tags (that Lando snagged for them) to whoever is sitting out front and then blend in with the background. A tiny part of Martin's brain settles, and he feels less guilty cheering for the way Lando is able to jump Checo because of Red Bull's double stack. And then Lando stays quicker than Checo, and that's pretty cool that he gets to cheer for him as well for the real first time while at a race.
Following the race, Lando runs into Martin in McLaren's areas where they've stuck around until the last possible moment before he has to run to the post-race gig. It's one of the first races Martin's been at where Lando actually has something to celebrate, and the bear hug he gives Lando is certainly reflective of that. Lando, Martin, Louis, and Max end up back on Max's plane later that evening heading back to Europe for a week off wherein Lando and Max take their selfie, and Martin is in their comments within like five minutes. Because he can, because what is subtlety anymore, because they're happy.
