The Art of Hating
Tumblr media
—Roger Ebert's review of North
The thing about having a literary nemesis is that they can't just be a terrible author or an awful person. They have to also be someone everyone else sees as harmless and inoffensive, even good, even amazing. Only you, the chosen one, truly comprehend the truth about them. Seeing them mentioned sends you into a frothing rage. You stand in a corner of the party muttering under your breath, They Don't Know he's evil. You want to fight anyone who says "I love them, they're great" but not nearly as much as you want to throttle anyone who says "they're okay" or "idk they do charity can't judge". Bonus points if they're obscure and no one else you know read their books so you look insane when you complain about them.
My literary nemesis is Jodi Picoult. I was 12 going on 13 when I picked up House Rules, a book that I'd seen a friend reading under her desk in class. The school library had a shelf dedicated to her books so I checked it out there. It was the worst fucking book I'd ever read. Honestly, I don't think anything has dethroned it since. I systematically read all of the others on that shelf, and when I finished those I went to her website to pore over the excerpts of her upcoming books. I vividly remember sprinting to the bookstore to purchase her new books as soon as they came out. It made me crazy that all the online criticisms I saw of her books were not only half-baked and trivial but also made it easy for her and fans to dismiss as just hate because none of them pinpointed the actual issues with her writing. I wrote like, dissertations on why her books were ontologically evil, on why her prose was garbage and were ridiculous, and then squirrelled these documents away where no one could see them. It's not 'just' hate. Never just.

Meet the Booklr
Tumblr media
Is that even a thing, a Booklr? Well, I guess it is now. Nice to meet ya, my name is Meghan. Here are three fun facts about me:
I have dual citizenship in Ireland and America. I am born and raised in NJ, USA
I love to knit, my grandma taught me, but I'm too afraid to learn how to crochet.
I absolutely love ice skating and swimming; I hate the winter and snow and love the summer. Even though I know how to ice skate, I don't know how to roller-skate/rollerblade, which apparently is surprising to people
I love physical books and kindle books. (why are kindle books becoming the same price or more as a physical book?) My favorite genres are romance and mystery, I am getting into psychological thrillers and romantasy genres.
My favorite authors/books:
Fourth Wing b Rebecca Yarros
A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J Maas
House Rules by Jodi Picoult
The Housemaid by Freida McFadden
And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie
I love to read on my free time and watch crime shows. Monday through Friday, 7 am-3 pm, I am a high school English teacher.
What is your all time favorite book/author?

Embodiment of love
@pchberrytea tagged me!! And then my partner had to help me take it because I couldn't figure out how to do it well??? Its fun and cool they just do uquiz better.
I tag @maxiseden since I think this would be fun for your blorbos and @plasma-packin-mama cuz I love Delilah & Arcade and would love to see what they get!! And! Copying Tea here, if you want an excuse to be tagged for this then CONGRATS. It's you. You've been tagged. You're it.
Also, I guess some spoilers for pairings for my characters...?
💕 RULES: Take this quiz for your OC/ship.
Without further ado:
Amy/Butch
Tumblr media
[ love is beautiful because it's built deliberately ] when casey mcquinston wrote "that's the choice. i love him, with all that, because of all that, on purpose. i love him on purpose" and when jenny slate tweeted "i just want someone to grab my little face and scream on purpose, on purpose i am going to care about you" and when jodi picoult wrote "after fifteen years, love isn't just a feeling. it's a choice" and when the good place said "if soulmates do exist, they're not found they're made"
Man this one HURTS. It hurts in the long term, and it hurts in the short term. They communicate terribly, they understand each other better than most people understand them, they argue a lot and also are the bestest friend the other has ever had. I've said this for a while, but if things had panned out differently these two would've been best friends all the way back in the vault. And this invokes all that for me, but also. In context of where they end up by the end of the story... It hurts so so so bad. They never stop choosing each other even long long after.
They're always touching each other, holding each other, putting their hands on the other. A punch, a hug, holding each other's face. Hands holding, Butch arm around Amy's shoulder, Amy always ready and willing to hold Butch when he needs it. The world is shitty, but they're together.
Sunshine/Half Pint
Tumblr media
[ devotion: love, loyalty, or enthusiasm for a person, activity, or cause ] when ruth said to naomi "where you go, i will go, and where you stay, i will stay. your people will be my people, and your God my God" and when hozier sang "i'll be the dreadful need from the devotee that drove [orpheus] underground" and when deathcab for cutie sang "if there's no one beside you when your soul embarks, i will follow you into the dark"
So if Butch/Amy hollowed me out, this one knocks me in the teeth and guts me. YES. YES. THIS IS THEM. These courier dorks will follow each other to the very ends of earth, to hell and back again, will be by each other's side till the very end and beyond. They die by each other's side. Literally. It doesn't matter what happens this two are soulmates eternally devoted to each other.
They are "I love you in this life and when I'm someone else entirely" and "I love you when you burn down the world", "I love you when you're a monster", "we're monsters together".
Leo/MacCready/Hancock
Tumblr media
[ love as gentleness after a lifetime of cruelty ] when ocean vuong said "sometimes being offered tenderness feels like the very proof that you've been ruined" and when pablo neruda said "like a jar you housed the infinite tenderness and the infinite oblivion shattered you like a jar" and when anais mitchell wrote "all i've ever known is how to hold my own, and now i wanna hold you, too”
crying, actually crying
This is the boys. This is the boys all the way. They're all so fucked up and hurt and love each other so much, and yeah they're TENDER. When I think of Leo/Hancock it's such gentle touches and adoring looks and holding each other gently. It's softly spoken words. It's staring into each others eyes. Mac/Leo is sharing the weight of a trauma, it's defending the other to the other, it's giggles and warmth by the fire as they help the other unwind. Hancock/Mac is camaraderie. It's being debaucherous fools who wind up holding each other. It's having their arms wrapped around each other and laughing.
Hopefully there will be a pt.2 with more members of the quartet (Sunshine/Half Pint/Deacon/Danse) (ik ik ik trust me it WILL work even if I forget why sometimes) (we've gone to crackship hell and we WILL radicalize Danse). Maybe for Mae/Takeshi? Maybe for Mae and someone else? A lot maybes.

Get to know me better   Tag Game
I got tagged by @gala1981 thank you so much for the tag (😭<3)
Rules: answer the questions and tag nine people you want to get to know better
3 ships: I don’t really consume romantic media, umm... I really like the couple Joe and Nicky from ‘The Old Guard’. (am I allowed to say Akia and River? ‘Cause I definitely ship them)
First ship: We do not speak of the dark ages, those old times are past us now. (I was a (angst) Drarry shipper in middle school - please forgive me )
Last song: ‘Last Man on Earth’ - Anna Bates (I’ve been playing it on repeat the last week and I really hope it doesn’t wear off)
Last Movie: ‘Lost Bullet 2′ - I have to admit I was crocheting the whole time, but I really liked the first film, this one pretty good too.
Currently reading: re-reading ‘House Rules’ - Jodi Picoult (prolly my favourite author) its about a court case of an autistic boy who’s accused of murder. It rips me apart every time I read it.
Currently consuming:  Paint water
Currently craving: Eggs? or my headache to go away, that too...
Tagging: (I don’t really know 9 people, so) @whump-queen @riverlett-arboreal @jester-step @recidivistboy @crow-trapped-in-a-library (and the whump-rp anons if you want, I’d love to hear more about you or your character :] )
(only if you want to! No pressure!) <3

10. do you have a guilty fav?
PLEASE, that would require me to feel guilt and as we all know cringe culture is DEAD (but also it’s twilight… i really really do love those books idc what anyone thinks and it is not an ironic love whatsoever! AND the host which is also by stephenie meyer is so fucking underrated, a hill i will die on)
oh and i suppose this counts! i own like, quite a lot of jodi picoult books that my grandma used to pass on to me and i really don’t mind them at all, even if they’re all a bit formulaic/the same sometimes. she’s just prolific in the way that like, stephen king is prolific, but because she writes books for middle aged mums and not horrorbros her writing is ‘bad’/unelevated which is obviously bollocks. house rules and nineteen minutes are total bops

DISABILITY PRIDE MONTH QUOTE 7 OF 9 Thursday, July 13, 2023
I've met so many parents of the kids who are on the low end of the autism spectrum, kids who are diametrically opposed to Jacob, with his Asperger's. They tell me I'm lucky to have a son who's verbal, who is blisteringly intelligent, who can take apart the broken microwave and have it working again an hour later. They think there is no greater hell than having a son who is locked in his own world, unaware that there's a wider one to explore. But try having a son who is locked in his own world and still wants to make a connection. A son who tries to be like everyone else but truly doesn't know how. - Jodi Picoult, House Rules

Living with regrets is like driving a car that only moves in reverse.
In author Jodi Picoult’s 2010 novel “House Rules,” several characters take turns narrating from their own perspective. It’s an effective way to learn the inner feelings and struggles of the various individuals, and we learn that one of the characters, Emma, is particularly plagued by fears and regrets about her life. This quote is said to her at a moment when she’s feeling particularly anxious about the passage of time, and wishing she had acted differently with her children over the years. It’s the perfect reminder that the past is, as it’s often said, in the past — it cannot be revisited or changed, and by dwelling on it, we risk missing out on all life has to offer in the present and future.

"I would like to be able to tell her that, yes, now I get it. When someone dies, it feels like the hole in your gum when a tooth falls out. You can chew, you can eat, you have plenty of other teeth, but your tongue keeps going back to that empty place, where all the nerves are still a little raw"
-Jodi Picoult, "House Rules"
