Music(ology) headcanons! Part 2

My friend @klaraflamez and I have been writing a shared story based upon the wizard101 AUs we made independently. Things go somewhat off the rails, and so these headcanons that we made for Music absolutely do not work for canon, which is part of why I'm making this post separate.

An overview of our AUs:

In both Corrupted Spiral (my AU) and the Cleaved AU (Klara's), the Spiral learned so heavily on its dependency upon its Wizard that it led to the Wizards' demises. In CS, before Arc 4 could properly begin, Nora lashed out in fury, sick of being Nothing but a title and weapon, and abandons the Spiral. In Cleaved, Scarlet was killed in the final fight of Lemuria, a 1v8, abandoned and alone because the Spiral assumed she would have handled it.

The main characters of the next generation after the two Wizards (~0-5 years after Nora's departure and 25 years after Scarlet's death) each realize that even though they're not The Wizard, they still have a duty to serve the good of the Spiral.

Overall there's a major theme of destiny and responsibility not falling on just one person's shoulders. The Wizard is not the only Paradox, and the primordial magics of Light, Shadow, and Music are no longer reserved for the Wizard and the gods. They become proper schools, integrated with the other ten (7 playable schools + 3 Astrals).

I've written and come up with spells for the Music school, as one of the characters I'm writing ends up as the Scion of Music, while Klara's writing the revamped Shadow and Light schools because her OCs become the Scions for those.

More details on Music as its own school in CCSAU (both lorewise and mechanicswise because i am gamerpilled), and all the spells themselves plus their explanations (where I derived inspiration from) are under the cut!

Music is the magic of creation. 'Outgoing' mechanics are the name of the game. It is a major hitter like Fire and Storm, but also has access to heals like the more defensive Life magic that came from the Song of Creation. Music's greatest weakness is that it is a major glass cannon, with no spells in its repertoire able to mitigate incoming damage.

The reason Music is tied to Fire and Storm alongside Life lorewise is because the Scion of Music first studied Fire and Storm magic alongside Musicology, before Music was its own school. Our Scion shaped Music as much as Music shaped him.

Now onto the spells themselves!

MAINLINE (primarily ATTACKING) SPELLS:

1 pip - Lyrebird - 90-130 damage. Based on the lyre instrument, and also a nod to Lyra, the fanon Music school tree in the Cleaved AU.

2 pip - Trombun - 220-260 damage. A pun on trombone and bunny.

3 pip - Earworm - 500 damage over 3 turns. Colloquially, earworms are catchy bits of song that just stay in your head and WON'T GET OUT, which is the inspiration for making this spell a pesky overtime. Also, taken from the Earworm/Brainworm mobs in Empyrea.

4 pip - Melodeer - 465-525, + 20% heal OR damage blade to self. Melody + deer. Here we begin to see some utility and niche poke its way into spells so that they're not plain and pure damage. Also, just to balance Music against the other 'hitter' schools a little bit more, it doesn't get a 4-pip AoE.

5 pip - Volta Bracken - 400 damage AND 400 health to self. A reference to volta brackets (an element in musical notation), with language nodding at Storm and Life magic (volt as in electricity, bracken as in a kind of plant). Yes this spell is an objectively better version of Beary Surprise. I hate Beary Surprise so much why is the bear both anthro and nude. why does he fucking smile like that. why can i see the whites of his eyes. WHY THE HUG?

6 pip - Resonance - 525-610 damage + remove all blades on 1 target. A single-target version of Myth's dreaded Earthquake.

7 pip - Horschestra - 700 damage to all enemies. Your classic 7-pip AOE. Horse + Orchestra, taken from a song in the Homestuck OST because it made me laugh tbh.

8 pip - Revivace - 1200 Heal to all allies. Name derived from Revive (synonym of Rebirth) and Vivace (musical mood). Meant to be a parallel to Life’s Rebirth spell, since Bartleby is the closest thing to a Music school tree in CS. However Rebirth gives an absorb-shield, which counts as temporary HP even if the spell heals someone to full, while Revivace has no extra defense.

9 pip - Crescendo! - 100 damage turn 1, then a DoT for 200, 300, then 400 damage, to all enemies. Crescendo is a musical term for "get gradually louder"

10 pip (Azteca) - Ceramic Drake - 1000 damage to 1 target, then 625 damage to all enemies over 3 rounds. The first of Music's spells that take on aesthetics derived from the world they're learned in. It takes inspiration from the tlapitzalli, an Aztec flute-like instrument made of ceramic.

5 pip + Shadow (Darkmoor) - Rehubution - 810 damage + 25% Music trap to all enemies. The spell's name comes from the word Retribution and the rehu, an instrument made by the Māori of Aotearoa. All of the canon Darkmoor spells are actually Khrysalis themed, and @chrono101 (now deactivated) made a really cool post about how the Hoppers had Aotearoan references that I remembered while coming up with this post. The effect in combat is derived from Fire from Above before it was nerfed and then slaughtered.

6 pip + Shadow (Polaris) - Luphilymn - 1260 damage, +1 turn to Damage over Times (DoTs) on enemy and +1 turn to Heal over Times (HoTs) on self. Luphilim + Hymn.

4 pip + Shadow (Mirage) - Spirit of the Groove - 900 damage, divided between targets (like all other Mirage spells). This spell is less a reference to something Miragian, and more a nod to a character who had a major impact on the Scion of Music's development. Ceramic Drake, Luphilhymn, and the upcoming spells of Ramalong and Jungle Drum Jam also are nods to characters that the Scion of Music was greatly supported by.

X-pip + Shadow (Karamelle) - Ramalong - 220 damage per pip. A blend of sing-along and the candy rams. This spell is an X-pip because there are a handful of songs/lullabies about counting sheep. Count your pips up!

6 pip + Shadow (Lemuria) - Jungle Drum Jam - 850 damage to all enemies, +40% Music blade AND +40% heal blade to self. Taken from this once-off moment in Lemuria where Bantam says that he and the Koolakamba just casually use advanced musicology for the sake of boogieing.

The effect is taken DIRECTLY from the far superior path of the Life Lemuria spell, Lord of the Jungle, before KI nerfed it to bits. I am so fucking mad about the nerf. I fucking liked having a decent shadow AoE on my Life and now it's useless again. <- had to get my gamer rage out sorry.

1 pip + Fire pip + Storm pip (Novus) - Tempo Inferno - 800 damage, gambit 1 blade into a DoT for 500 over 4 turns, gambit 1 trap into a HoT for 500 HP over 4 turns. Tempo refers to the speed of a musical piece, and both pieces of this spell's name are nods to Storm and Fire as well (Temp- for tempest, Storm's most iconic spell, Inferno for fire). This spell would also hold visual reference to that one sidequest about how clocks don't work on Novus.

1 pip + Death pip + Myth pip (Wallaru) - Crab Grave - 575 damage to all enemies. A reference to the extinct Juggernaut crabs of Wallaru, the still living Tasmanian giant crab, and the legendary Crab Rave meme. Given that all of the Wallaru spells' archmastery pips are the ones backwards from the Novus spells' pips, it made sense to make Crab Grave's pips the roshambo opposite to Tempo Inferno's. Myth is the roshambo opposite of Storm, and Death is the roshambo opposite of Fire. Don't believe me on Death and Fire? Look at how Balance's Novus gear has 3 variants that pair Ice-Life, Storm-Myth, and Fire-Death as its archschools. No I don't know why the Balance Wallaru spell is Death-Storm instead of Death-Fire I don't get it <- gamer raging again.

UTILITY SPELLS:

There are some utility spells that every school gets access to, simply changed per school: the basic Blade and Trap and Shield are simply named Music Blade, Music Trap, and Music Shield, because they're standardized for all the schools (Except Ice Shield, which is actually Snow Shield, for whatever reason?). Though, to put a wrinkle into things and keep with Music's theming as hyper-outgoing, Music Trap is the only ward spell (a spell that affects incoming damage rather than outgoing) that Music gets permanent access to. Music Shield would be TC only. Traps get special treatment because of Maulwurf von Trap existing. I like the guy don't @ me.

Then there's the utility spells that are just about the same for each school but with unique names. These include:

the 2 pip damage bubble - Circle of Fifths, after an important element in music theory. +25% damage to all outgoing Music spells AND +25% to all outgoing Music heals (the boost to healing alongside damage is unique to Music. Life gets Circle of Thorns (+25% damage) and Sanctuary (+60% healing) as two different bubbles.)

the 4-pip critical and pierce bubble - Acoustic Arena, +15% Music critical and +20% Music pierce.

the dispel - Mute

the Taunt/Pacify - Soloist, Taunts the enemy for 2 turns, making you the only target they can hit. Yes, having a glass cannon school gain taunt is a bit poor in game design, typically you want your glass cannons to have some form of Pacify so that they're not killed as quickly, but thematically Music becoming a loud center of attention makes more sense to me.

the complementary triad shield - Eclipse Shield, -70% incoming Light and Shadow damage. The parallel to Storm's Thermic Shield (-70% Fire and Ice) or Death's Dream Shield (-70% Life and Myth). Like Music Shield, because this spell is both a staple piece of utility that every school should have access to and a defensive ward that goes against Music's school identity, it would only exist as a treasure card.

The level 75 minion from The Professor - Baronness Webberfeld - 5 pips, summon a minion of Music. She is a reference to Baronness Elberfeld, a minor character from the Sound of Music. Because I had to get a reference to that in. Because I am normal about Maulwurf von Trap and his source media.

And then we get to the unique utility spells, the gimmicks that gives Music its identity in-game or give it thematic support.

Tune Up - 0 pips, +20% accuracy to the next outgoing Music spell. A parallel to Storm's Lightning Strike (which back in my day only gave +10% accuracy, not +25%). Music spells have a base accuracy of 70% like Storm, so the accuracy buff would be greatly needed at lower levels.

Bangsnap! - 2 pips, Confuse or stun each enemy for 1 turn.

Gurdy-hurdy - 3 pips, Confuse or stun each enemy for 2 turns.

Bangsnap and Gurdyhurdy go together, I'm thinking of them being from the Grizzleheim and Wintertusk spell quests at level 35 and 55. Bang snaps are small explosives that only release a loud sound but do no damage. Gurdy-hurdy is a reference to another in-game moment.

(The hurdy-gurdy, un-reversed, is a kind of musical instrument.)

And, yep! Myth is no longer the only school with the Confusion mechanic! Yippee! (I can hear the gamerbro players scream.) This is because before Music became a standalone school in CCSAU, Klara had the idea that, the way some Wizard101 spells are musicological despite not being in the school of Music, some Pirate101 abilities are inherently musicological as well, namely Blast of Discord.

And this is an ability that our Scion of Music was able to learn before Music became an independent school, so rather than take that ability away from him, we decided to incorporate it into Music's entire repertoire.

Leitmotif - 2 pips, 305 HP to 1 target, then 305 more HP 3 turns later. A leitmotif is a snippet of a musical melody that comes back later in a piece or in another piece (Toby Fox, one of my favorite composers, uses leitmotifs to the MAX.)

Sonatyr - 4 pip, 650 Health + 30% Healing Blade to all. Satyr + Sonata. Does less health than Life's Satyr because I don't want to completely upstage Life, but giving an extra blade to everyone is useful. It buffs every healer, and would count for any blade-based gambits/secondary effects.

Adagio - 1 pip, +1 turn to a HoT on an ally or to a DoT on an enemy. Adagio means for a piece of music to slow down.

Allegro - 1 pip, -1 turn to a HoT on an enemy or to a DoT on an ally. Allegro means for a piece of music to speed up.

Adagio and Allegro are spells that go together. If they were to be implemented in-game, I'd have them be learned at the same time. Having a spell that does different things depending on whether it's on an ally or enemy is really interesting to me, though it would be a pain in the ass to code.

Encore - 5 pips, force your target to cast the same spell for the next 2 turns. Encore, of course, means "to play again". Taken directly from Pokemon because why not?

Baton Pass - X pips, give your blades to an ally, universal and at half-value, (1 pip per blade). Also derived from Pokemon because why not? The half-value gimmick comes from Bantam's cheat of "I'll be taking that, thanks!" Where he replaces a blade you cast on someone else with a universal blade of half value. The devs intended that cheat to be annoying and discourage buffing one player to the max, but it's actually a REALLY HANDY mechanic when used correctly. The half-value blade would count as a unique blade that therefore stacks with whatever other blades your ally has.

Perfect Pitch - 1 pip, +20% accuracy to all allies. Perfect pitch is defined as the ability to tell exactly what note(s) a sound is without any reference. This spell would be copy-pasted over from Life, and also derived from the Pirate101 abilities Call to Arms and Esprit de Corps, which both boost your team's accuracy. (Esprit also gives dodge, a stat that I cannot find any way to translate into Wizard101 that wouldn't be a defensive ward, which Music does not do). The animations for those two powers feature musical instruments (a drum and a trumpet), which makes it feel very musicological to me and therefore fitting for Music itself.

Fortissimo! - 2 pips, +15% Critical chance to all allies. Fortissimo is music speak for "BE FUCKING LOUD!" This spell is derived from the Pirate101 abilities Discipline and Enduring Discipline, which (are supposed to) give +5% and +10% critical chance to all allies. (I have heard that the abilities that purely increase critical chance rather than another stat simply don't work because Pirate101's code is made out of silly string, but that's besides the point). There are very few spells that affect critical, so it's a niche that Music could fill in if it wanted to.

This probably isn't even enough utility, Wizard101 has a SURPRISING amount of spells it throws at you. It's such an in-depth game. I love it. I am normal about Wizard101.

Also, Klara was absolutely AMAZING and drew some of the spells!

My partner, however, scrolled through your blog maybe two minutes reading all your tags and went "damn. OD came back Punished™️ huh."

tbh like? Sort of, yeah, oD as a "person" (he was never really that, he was always sort of a performance I put on for the brand) is straight up dead, I've ego deathed out of being able to be that guy. The name will stick around on the youtube channel, but even there i'm planning character rebrands because doing anything else feels wrong.

but it was real life trauma shit from my parents that pushed me to the brink, not really anything online. The homophobic harassment I got from them over the last month or so pushed me back into being suicidal and also they called the cops on me and got me involuntarily thrown into a hospital i almost got choked to death in! Its been a rough rough fucking couple months, and for all the drama i've relatively spawned, it barely had anything to do with Homestuck.

Losing a lot of my social circle IN homestuck due to my trauma responses didnt help that but whatever, i made new friends pretty quick and feel like letting go of any sense of responsibility to protecting the image of WP or the Epilogues has freed me substantially to just be a fan and hang out trying to make shit. If anything, I feel free!

Especially since it resulted in me FINALLY divorcing my brains stupid twitter addiction and i was immediately rewarded for it with a vibrant new dirkjake and general mlm shipping scene on Tumblr, which honestly, is all I've ever wanted or needed from Homestuck.

I'm still pretty punished and will be until the day I get everything I want from this comic (canon dirkjake soulmate marriage) but that day's coming faster and faster and in the meantime i'm having more fun in this fandom than I have in years.

Homestuck is SBaHJ #55. Dave's trying something new this time.

Honestly, spam away. It's become a lot more easier to handle asks now that I'm doing them every weekend.

WTF, SBaHJ historians rewriting history!

Well if that ain't absolutely perfect casting. Grey's Mandy would be a perfect Rose, and honestly, her Azula is a pretty flawless Vriska.

Both of these ideas for Dave's modus refer to him dealing with arbitrary restrictions - and I have talked before about how Dave seems pretty good at working within Sburb's.

The Tree Modus is harder to untangle, though. Trees are such a general symbol (and John's the one with the apple symbolism), and as a data structure, they're awfully abstract. The fact that she calls it elegant when it's obviously as janky as all the others is a good metaphor for her own feigned elegance, though.

I do really like the idea of analyzing people's modi, so I'm going to keep doing it.

It's kind of weird to be liveblogging the heyday of a comic which has essentially been orphaned by its author. It's a little sad, to be honest - it means that eventually, I'll run out of original Homestuck material, and there'll never be any more. Well, what can ya do.

The worldbuilding, of course, I'll love, but it'd also be fascinating to read a deconstruction of a fandom I was never part of. Maybe I'll try to reverse-engineer what the fandom was like from the fic itself.

I'm building up a proper list here! I'm going to have to make a page for it on the blog, I think, so I can compile my recs.

We know he's not really omniscient - and so does Terezi, actually - but it seems as if Vriska completely buys into it. I'd still call it an assumption, but it's a completely reasonable one, given the circumstances, and especially given that he's trying to mess with her head.

It's interesting, because if Vriska really believes he's 'never wrong', then how could she possibly expect him to lose at Battlefield-chess? Is she just that competitive? Why am I asking a question I already know the answer to?

Shit that's good. I'd love to get my hands on a compilation of these ship names.

Oh, I actually didn't catch the pool reference! And it's funny that someone whose name alludes to the Father Of Lies claims never to lie...

So that's the scratch explained, but what about the doc? He sure ain't healing anyone, and the 'omniscient' have no need for research.

The table actually kind of makes sense, since he wears an enormous, green, rectangular-looking coat. It's also fuel for my half-serious 'Felt megafusion' theory - all the cueballs are in the pool table at the end of the game, after all.

Yup! Hass (I presume) knows how to name 'em.

If it helps, Notepad++ is what all my initial notes go into as I liveblog. In a way, it is a wertsearch application!

okay so. there was this homestuck fanventure (fanfic written in the format of the original, with panels and everything) called vast error. i liked it for a bit. then the way they used a wendigo as a Quirky Monster and treated my (native) friend like shit when he spoke up about it soured me to it. someone asked what i thought about ve and since it was my personal blog i said i didnt like it bc of that (and other issues. when asked about what the characters would be as humans they referred to the main protagonist as a "normal white guy"). ve fans really didnt like that i didnt like it and it caused this big thing that eventually made its way to the team behind vast error and they finally changed the wendigo lusus. and also had me on their radar as #hater

then, after hiveswap friendsim they made their own visual novel ve spinoff called snowbound blood. if you were in the hiveswap fandom at the time of friendsim youd know that after every volume was released youd find the next volumes name in the files, and it was tradition to spend the next week theorising who it was about until the announcement. since i still had mutuals who liked ve (and i enjoyed hating) i went into the files to see if they did a similar thing. they had every single volume title AND who the title was for in the files. i posted it bc i thought ve fans would like to know who to look forward to

apparently? that was Evil of me. people got REALLY mad at me. k8 (iykyk) especially. people were making tweets "warning" about me "leaking" when all i did was do what was expected of us for the past year. if you dont want people to find something dont put it where it is very easily found! to clarify: there were no image or audio assets or anything like that. it was JUST the titles. and to ALSO clarify: this was a FREE FANGAME. no one was getting anything out of it. but knowing which character was gonna be in vol4 was Ruining It For Everyone or whatever. eat my ass austin

Boatem Homestuck Classpects (pt 1 desert Duo)

Okay so with @chrisrin single-handedly getting my homestuck nostalgia from five years ago rearing its ugly head, I’ve decided to try to sort the boatem crew into classpects. I am starting off with desert Duo and hopefully, I’ll be able to churn out the other three soon after. My credentials are I watched a ton of optimisticduelist’s videos at the peak of my homestuck phase and sorted characters in digimon with their classpects and captchalogue. So without further ado when I should be getting ready to head out to college, the boatem classpects. (Also boo, gendered classes are stupid therefore no classes are gendered.)

Grian

Grian is the Heir of Rage. One who invites change through rage or one who invites changes through rage, for others

Rage in the context of homestuck does not always correlate with anger but rather the idea of chaos. The destabilization of things that we once knew. While there are obvious examples of this in the hermitcraft series I’d like to start with Evo.

Evo was a server that was constantly changing, with every new update to the minecraft would invited a sense of chaos to the world. However, despite creating the world itself, Grian invites rage to change Evo through the watchers, leaving him in more passive role. That’s not to say that Grian didn’t cause his own brand of active chaos on the server with his pranking, but his biggest act of rage was through the watchers changing the world. Finally, Grian cemented his role as an heir by quite literally inheriting the role of the watcher.

In Hermitcraft, Grian invitation of change through rage can be seen through the prank wars and the mycelium revolution. While grian himself did not start the prank war. He decides to escalate it to the point where a war could be fought over it, inviting a string of chaos that impacts others. And while the mycelium revolution Grian starts all by himself, he does so in order to not benefit himself but the change hermitcraft through another story.

Grian’s relationship with rage is a bit more different in the context of the life series. Arguably this is Grian at his most passive but also at his most active. For 3rd life, Grian invites rage through Scar. By killing scar and aligning himself with him, Grian can use scar as a vessel for his brand of rage. Instead of being an active participant in the chaos and bloodshed, Grian is all doing it under the name of scar because scar is the red life. However, grian is directly responsible for inviting that change into the server by killing scar with the creeper, making him an active and passive participant in the resulting end of 3rd life.

Scar

Scar is the Witch of Light. One that changes light or one that changes through light for themselves

Light is best described by the phrase fortune favors the bold. Luck. This idea of getting away with things against all odds. Light also represents a sense of relevance. An important figure in order to get the plot moving forward. One great example of this could be seen in Scar’s role during the mycelium resistance where Scar acts as the catalyst for the war to break out in the first place through his good fortune of becoming mayor. As a witch of light, Scar is able to change the course of luck for himself rather than for the benefit of others. Often this amounts to his more capitalistic nature like his endeavors with convex and season 8’s Offworld Escapes travel agency.

Scar is also a man who is just drenched in charisma and luck. Despite his many deaths and his unlucky streak of general untrustworthiness, he is still able to get people to buy what he is selling. He changes fortune to be on his side. I’d like to use last life and double life as an example of how he is able to talk his way out of being killed despite proving time and time again that his deals are typically not to be trusted. He is able to change light or in this case fortune to be in his favor.

Both Scar fortune and misfortune serve to benefit him in some way by changing the course of the story. During 3rd life, his first death by Grian may have seemed like a stroke of bad luck, however, it was this death that allowed for Scar to have a loyal partner up until the end of the series. The same goes for the loss of his second life, one might call that a misfortune but it provided the opportunity for scar to seek revenge against those he believed wronged him. This pattern of luck through misfortune seems to follow him through the rest of the life series.

Another thing to note is that the witch is the active counterpart to the heir making Scar and Grian's dynamic specifically in the life series to be so prominent. They both work together to create large-scale changes within the story of the first life smp, however, grian does it through scar in order to change the entire dynamic of the server, while Scar does it in service to himself.

erigam (the worst people you meet (but in opposite directions) get slightly less worse when they're with each other. mostly because they keep distracting each other with poetic overdramatic rambling and kickin the wicked elixir. this is the only reason there have been no deaths in their presence)

erigamtav (the above but tavros is there. this does not improve things in the slightest. in fact, he makes them worse. )

calliroxyjane (is that even the ship name? anyways three girls who have always sort of had crushes on each other for years but never quite had the chance to confess. and/or three girlbosses who are also antisocial shut-ins learn how to be human beings from their gilfriends who have also never been outside)

gamkar (sigh. fine. whatever. mostly on the list because these are the only fics i can find with good gamzee hurt comfort so i must learn to tolerate it. they'd be better together if they didnt cross the assholery event horizon)

gamrezi (look. their relationship was shitty in canon, yes. but consider. canon divergence. weirdo who eats chalk meets weirdo who eats slime. and then they make out about it. hussie was a coward and gamrezi would be a power couple if act 6 didn't happen. fuck act 6.)

gamtav (can be boring but can also be fun. the only two trolls who could not give a shit about the violence of alternia spend all their time together coming up with the worst raps ever and then make out about it. it has so much potential)

rosemary (girlfail lesbians who everyone thinks is way more competent than they actually are. rose canonically fell down the stairs during their first date. everyone forgets about this. they shouldn't)

fefnep (fishgirl 4 catgirl. i think they would vent about their moirails to each other and also draw their fursonas together)

I just think it’s fun that the Librarian is one of the longest-running characters in the Discworld series, right alongside Rincewind. He was in The Colour of Magic! He appears in so many books, too, in a few of the different book-arcs and even the standalones!

But at the same time, I also think it’s hilarious that the Librarian was turned into an orangutan within the timespan the series covers. It happened during The Light Fantastic. And yet by the time of Sourcery and Guards! Guards!, just a few books later, people are just like ‘oh that’s the Librarian.’ It’s not just wizards who accept this as mundane reality, even! The Librarian goes out on the town regularly enough that many regular Ankh-Morpork citizens have already learned the golden rule which is Don’t Call the Librarian a Monkey, not too long after his transformation!

This is so realistic to human nature tbh, and yet still wild to think about.

i am going to read homestuck

hi. my name is moth. i have made it my entire 20 years of living without reading homestuck.

some background on my homestuck experience:

i am well aware of its reputation

i have attempted to read homestuck 2 separate times in my past, once when i was 14 and once at 17. the first time was unsuccessful because i didn’t understand the set up. the second time i was simply annoyed with how long it was taking to start and i gave up

i have, however, watched the jacksepticeye play through of hiveswap act 1 at 14 years old and i thoroughly enjoyed that. i listen to the soundtrack when i’m sad and i remember really liking the characters

i have met 2 people in real life who have read homestuck and have vehemently warned me against it. both of these people are no longer in my life, so they cannot control me.

i am vaguely aware of some of the inside jokes (karkalicious, vriska did nothing wrong, sharpie bath)

however i have managed to avoid most spoilers, or if i have been spoiled, it meant absolutely nothing to me out of context

all this being said, curiosity has finally gotten the better of me.

i am creating this blog to hold myself to actually read this godforsaken webcomic— further than the first couple pages, that is. i don’t have a concrete plan yet, but if possible, i would love to create a schedule of some kind to keep myself accountable (i hope to create one once i have finished my finals next week).

the purpose of this blog is also to record reactions and possibly procure some sort of guidance along the way, as i hope that this blog will be discovered by some homestuck veterans. perhaps some explanations if necessary, encouragement if i find the beginning too boring once again, or if nothing else, i hope it provides entertainment to those who are already familiar with the comic.

some ground rules for myself and you, the viewer:

i will be going into this with a genuine, honest-to-god open mind. i am going to give homestuck as much of a chance as the people who first read it did. because i genuinely want to like this comic. under all the vitriol, i have heard from some that it is a creative, character driven, interesting story, and i think that it might be worth my time. i will be honest with my critiques, but i am also not going into it to hate. i want to respect the story. if i come out of this genuinely enjoying homestuck, then that would be a win

i do not want to hear warnings from homestuck veterans for me to turn back. i do not want to hear that i “don’t know what i’m getting myself into.” that’s the point. that’s the fun of it. and i’m reading homestuck. come with me on this journey or look away.

i will post reactions after each reading i complete, updating the page numbers(?) and the date i read them. i will give my thoughts on what i have read and any other updates i feel are necessary

all of this now being said, i have a quick question for anyone who would like to help me: in the past i have tried both the regular webcomic website and also following along with an audiobook i found on youtube? i believe one of my local bookstores sells the first act(?) as a hardcover book as well. is there a format in which anyone would recommend i read? which will help me pay attention the best? please link any audiobooks or anything else that you prefer, thank you!!

SO. what we're gonna do is revamp things a lil bit. we're fucking doing this we are Making It Happen. what this'll do is itll make it easier for me to post things without having to remember every silly tag and rule i have set up here, and ill also just have a bit more of a laid-back and fun kinda art blog. i tried to do an elaborate tagging system, but MAN i am too forgetful for that.

so im just gonna keep it simple. character, fandom, content warnings, and maybe some other flavourtags. the sorts of things thatll make it easier for me to just pop up a quick drawing on even a busy day without having to go through a silly step by step process on how to tag things. because i love sharing my art and posting :)) but not so much when it is difficult </3

but hell who knows how thisll go after i reboot my bloggo. i think she was due for some maintenance for a long while. *pats the sidebar like you would soothe an agitated horse* there there girl, its gonna be alright. maybe ill even start making... casual posts? text posts? things like that??? damn Maybe.

hi. i like to draw but lately my art skills have been a bit shakey, i think im out of practice so im probably gonna start out doing some studies. my styles and designs for characters are always changing, but lately ive been trying to cement some designs that are in my brain Onto Paper.

im goblinrockcandy but you can call me GRC if that's a mouthful (thats what i call me because i do not have time for 5 syllables). im a Knight of Heart and sometimes that gets shortened to KoH and so sometimes people call me koh. now KOH is also the chemical formula for potassium hydroxide, but no one calls me that (a real shame, it flows right off the tongue and i think its a lovely set of sounds), but potassium hydroxide also goes by another name and that is lye. so sometimes people call me lye. i don't have a name so if you want to refer to me you have to get creative or pick up my blog by the scruff of its handle like a really ugly cat and point at it and say "this motherfucker right here".

same goes for pronouns. my pronouns are none/applicable. you gotta BE CREATIVE if you want to refer to me... pronouns are a crutch. they were your training wheels and now im the final boss. you have to fight me with your other words, this is what you have been training for.......

im trans queer person of colour, painfully unfunny and addicted to bad jokes, and i love homestuck. my faves switch up every once in a blood moon but right now i really fuckin love jake english. you might have discerned that by the very subtle hints of I talk about Him all the time & dirt striber avatar.

1. Are there any characters in your fandom or faceclaims you refuse to RP with? Who and why?

// My rules has a section showing the fandoms/communities I don’t want to interact or rp with! Here’s a reminder to it:

MLP, Homestuck, Undertale, Fnaf, League of Legends (Arcane won’t get a pass), Genshin Impact, Fnf, Disney and MCU (I’m debating on whether or not, I’ll give the comics a pass tho...)

Star wars stuff in specific. I’m intimidated and iffy about Legends characters, simply because I’m still not 100% knowledgeable about it (I’m learning more and more about it). Kotor/jedi fallen order/any of the SW games... I’m also not well versed in them, so I’ll also be hesitant to interact with them. With all of these things said, here are my straight ‘no’s. Unless I’m well acquaintanced with the mun behind the muse, I’ll not write with any of the sequels era characters (As stated in my muses directory. Although I’ve watched the trilogy, I’m not entirely familiar with it, which contributes to my overall lack of interest in interacting with it). Then there are the Starcruiser hotel, and the theme park attractions which are at the very bottom of everything thus getting the biggest no (I don’t think I have to talk about how the vibes between those things, don’t fall in line with anything else within the SW universe, right? Nah man, y’all can keep and try to excuse the +6k dollar LARP mess [which I heard that Disney is looking to double the prices so Y I K E S])

And as I’m writing this: I also won’t RP with Andor muses, until the serie is over.

2. Are there any plot tropes you are sick of/refuse to RP? If so, what are they and why?

// I’m not a fan of those fix-it AUs. No matter what it may be about. ‘No order 66 palpie chokes on a croissant & the galaxy is all fine & dandy uwu AU’, ‘clones are just one big family & jango is their dad uwu AU’. I understand the desire for those types of plots for fanarts and fanfics, but when it comes RP? Killing off the tragedy in SW is the equivalent of, burning down SW’s very essence. Also I’ve noticed that with these plots, they always end up watering down so many things about SW. The name of the series is literally Star wars, the war IS meant to be ugly, I don’t think anyone should sugarcoat that.

6. Is there a character that the rest of your fandom adores that you just don’t like/are indifferent to? Who is the character and why?

// I think that the Kenobi series hype is long dead by now, SO I can finally say this, without sb coming out of the woodworks to crucify me for it. Reva was mediocre at best (the actress put on her best, it is just that the script she was handed to was bad. The odds were against her.). She most certainly wasn’t the worst thing that came out of the show, see young Leia (wtf did they do to thIS KID?) and Tala (who? I literally forgot about her 5 secs after her death).

I just wished that Lucas arts hadn’t wasted their time with fan-baiting, hate-baiting its audience, all while using Ingram as a meat-shield for every single criticism towards the show. And instead taken their time to properly iron out this character. BC as she currently stands? It’s bad... That pitiful attempt at a redemption? Yeah, it could use some MUCH needed work, instead of just slapping it on her then calling it a day. But I’ll take what we got, over whatever the drafted one had in it (Cody’s legacy is safe... For now...).

12. What’s your biggest pet peeve when it comes to the fandom you RP in?

I’ve received multiple anons, whining about the fact I write cloneshipping. Or even having meltdowns over some of my HCs. I want to believe this is the result of how the search function on tumblr now operates, so it searches with anything that contains the searched words, instead of the tags. So, I’m chalking it up to being just strangers, finding my blog unaware of what this blog is about. But at the same time, there is a part of me that thinks I’ve received hate from actual RPers over that. BC god forbid, blocking sb and moving on with their day, is just too simple.

There is never a bad reason to not block someone. Even if it may sound silly in your mind, just block/filter out whatever is bugging you. It’s a whole lot better than hate-reading, or exposing yourself to shit you know that causes you discomfort.

Dirk Strider: The Ideal Pain in My Fuckin’ Ass

A jackass with too much big brain for the rest of us peasants (class structure pun intended) and playwright by the name of William Shakespeare once pontificated that “All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players,” a point which we’ll get back to later when it becomes relevant, at least as relevant as it can be considering the fact that this whole thing is a meditation on some fictional jackass from a webcomic that keeled the entire hell over like, what, 6 years ago? Shit went full Titanic. I mean, Celine Dion herself showed up to lament over a bunch of stupid rich people dying (surprise surprise, the sun still ’rose’ the next day, pun intended) from an iceberg that, in this metaphor, either represents ‘canon’ and its ability to ‘sink ships,’ as it were, (or as it weren’t, whatever sinks your boat) OR the ouroborosian nature of internet fandom culture, enjoying and not shutting even a singular hell up about a thing to the point of smothering both it and the surrounding environment with their borderline sexual obsession of aforementioned thing. Actually, it’s probably both. And yes, the irony that I’m making commentary about fandom despite being a part of that fandom doesn’t escape me. I digress, because of course the hell I do, and if you don’t like it then don’t even pretend like you were able to follow Homestuck at all. My digressions are the tame rodent chihuahua offshoot equivalent of wolves in comparison to what that orange-skinned author is capable of (as opposed to the orange-skinned president, both equally inflammatory but on opposite ends of the intellectual spectrum, and if I gotta fuckin tell you which side Hussie is supposed to be on because it’s not obvious to you, then I call into question why you continue to read a critique of Dirk Strider written by some jackass, who, for all intents and purposes, might as well be Dirk Strider).

Let’s start with hobbies. Everybody who has the capacity to give a shit has them, myself included. But that’s the Strider conundrum: they pretend they don’t have hobbies out of crippling fear of no longer being a cool guy, because as we all know, you can’t be cool and also enjoy life. That shit is for sissies. See, that ‘aloof cool guy’ shtik would work on an artificial simulacra of said cool guy, wherein the simulacra’s distinct and genuine inability to care (on account of it being programmed such that the ability to care wasn’t ever a consideration) did not hinder its ability to process, on account of its spiritless and inherently inhuman nature. But that’s just it: Dirk isn’t an artificial, inhuman simulacra of Dirk. Infinitely numerous timelines and iterations of Dirk be damned! Dirk Strider is Dirk Strider’s timeline’s own Dirk– he’s the original. He is not a simulacra, and the only ‘versions of Dirk’ that are simulacras are Lil’ Cal, Sawtooth, Squarewave, Lil’ Hal, and Brobot, all of which were made by Dirk, except for Lil’ Cal, and wouldn’t you know it, that’s the sunnuvabitch what that corrupts him. Point is, Dirk is Dirk is Dirk is Dirk, and if he’d shut his own hell up and realize how much he enjoyed making those simulacras he would realize that that means he has a hobby, and by the transitive property makes him a human being with the ability to give a shit. Self-loathing? Elimin8ed. Semi-subconsious narrative that he’s a bad person that he is constantly justifying? Gone, motherfucker, reduced to atoms. Hotel? Tri-fuckin-vago.

Dirk’s attempts at self-actualization are incredibly noble, and his character arc is complete when he finally relinquishes his attempt at controlling the external narrative using dominance (and in so doing, roleplaying the Lord class) and passive service of others (roleplaying the Knight class), and starts attempting to control his own personal narrative by helping his friends progress emotionally rather than narratively. Where he falls short is in continually justifying his narrative that he’s not a good person. In [S] Unite Synchronization, he does what a Prince of Heart should be expected to do, which is destroy, both through the idea of self and the idea of self itself: he does so by bypassing the everloving shit out of everyone's emotional turmoil in a way that suggests that he refuses to allow his friends to drag out their entry into Sburb the same way the beta kids did, but he does so in a way that doesn’t command the respect due of a leader, friend, or even fellow human being. His method, while still effective at fulfilling his classpect’s role, was overly-flashy stoneface’d Tony Hawk-esque bullshit at best and aggressive macro-management of his friends at worst. He denied Roxy the chance to prove herself and revive Jane, he denied Jane the opportunity to figure her own shit out, and he forced Jake to reverse-Dirkapitate him via clearly homoerotic kiss. Had Dirk been a healthier individual, he might have actively destroyed his friends’ negative perceptions of themselves (by say, giving them task direction so they don’t have time to wallow in self-pity) and helped them through their troubles in a way that still ultimately served to his benefit by way of entering the game, gathering hella sicknasty amounts of Grist, et cetera et gogdamn cetera.

Shakespeare’s claim that the world’s a stage is only valid when you account for his perspective: the world being a stage makes sense to him because his world literally was a stage. To him, that was a way of saying ‘we worry too much about our own destinies when our scripts are already written. All that is required of us is to do as we will,’ but to an unhealthy person, the world being nothing but a stage is incredibly nihilistic; if the script is already written and the actual act of existence is basically a formality, what the hell is the point of giving a shit about anything?? Existence becomes a fuckin basketball, bouncing through space-time at the whims of some unseen Shaquille O’Neal; impressive to watch but ultimately pointless, as all basketballs are. For this part of the analysis, I’m assuming that Dirk has read that quote from Shakespeare before, as I believe it to be in-character, and that even if he hasn’t, he canonically, factually sees himself as a character rather than a person. I mean, he is just a character, but his attempts at acknowledging this mirror real-world neuroses, the likes of which people who watch too much reality tv exhibit by becoming upset at the lack of interpersonal drama in their own lives. Dirk has three things going against him in this sense. One, he lacks the perspective of an actor. Two, he watches too much anime. And three, Dirk Strider is not healthy. In lacking the actor’s perspective, knowing the world’s a stage leads to the aforementioned nihilism. In watching so much anime and identifying so much with characters, simulacras in their own right of real, actual people, he mimics their attitudes and begins believing himself to be a simulacra of a real person. And in being unhealthy, we see the previous two factors compound and come crashing down like the Great Wave off Kanagawa (fantastic painting, by the way) upon our titular Strider’s poor little soul.

Even if he had the prior two afflictions, a healthy Dirk would make the conscious decision to do something with himself, and in so doing, be able to control his narrative and start gatekeep-gaslight-girlbossing his way to the top like the adorkable badass he is, which wouldn’t ya know it, is exactly what BrainGhost Dirk does. Dirk’s ‘redemption arc’ was in accepting that he could control himself and only himself, and that everything and everyone else were only subject to suggestion rather than domination.

Consider this case closed like the shutters of the buildings in a Wild-Western town during high noon as two men at odds approach the town square from opposite directions, tumbleweed tossing about ominously in the wind, wandering as wayward as whoever survives the inevitable duel is destined to.

So this pretty much happened when Radiation went "yo jit make something" and I was like "okay", and then later I was like "bluuuuuuh don't know what to write", and then Radiation went "do trollcops", and I went "no that's dumb, stupid dumb, what is trollcops even", and Radiation went "DO IT JIT YOU BUTT", and I was like "NO RADIATION I HATE EVERYTHING". And then, Mellotron samples happened, and here we are. Also, it should be pointed out that in the version with vocals, Trollcops (Radio Play), there's a name drop of the fan music piece that htis is based off of. Yes, it takes this long to re-use things, sometimes.

Besides that, I dunno, just enjoy it.

Toby Fox:

Don't tell anyone, but this is actually a remix of one of Jit's old fansongs called Under the Hat, which was a battle theme for Dad. So if your heart still pines for him... his soul and pipe are contained deep within this track.

So damn catchy and sleuthy.

Havoc to be Wrought was spawned from an idea for a short story I had in my mind about a man climbing the old bell tower of an abandoned church investigating strange sounds that had plagued a small town, only to be forced into a confrontation with the “King of Owls” once he reaches the top, and ending with the KoO cutting the bell rope that the man clung to and screeching in the night.

Things changed though.

Once I had actually started writing and refining it, I decided to change its message, from a mad owl thing to the mysterious demon in the troll’s session which had been recently mentioned in the comic (I wrote this sometime in Fall 2010). Also, yes, that is why there is distorted owl screeches at the end, although they were more meant to evoke the horrorterrors crying out in pain than owls by the time it was finished.

Contains some very powerful organ and some great chord progressions, but also some structural choices I am not completely proud of, which remained in the piece until its release months and months later because the original Finale file crashed on me before I had a chance to save it. So, rather than attempt reconstructing it, I went with what I had, and it stuck.

This is the second of the solo piano pieces on this album, at least in the main tracks, and a really late release as well, given that it first appeared in the comic some time around a year ago. I've held it back from getting released just so it could go on this record, so I'm glad it could finally go out.

This is also the only piece on the album that doesn't have a specific event to go along with it. Instead, I went for where it appeared in the comic when placing it, and see it as more of a small interlude. The intermission between Act 1 and Act 2 of a musical, if you will. The art is meant to go along with this as well, a sort of non-canon get-together of the first set of trolls and kids we know, and I can imagine them playing this record while they chill.

New Year's thread, 1/1/2022

It is currently 12:06 AM, January 1st, 2022. We made it. A whole 'nother year.

I'm sitting here, full up on green grapes, herring, black-eyed peas, and champagne, and I'm thinking about how strange things are and have been.

I make no secret of how my mother wasn't a good person. But something that stuck with me was her New Years traditions. Champagne, black eyed peas, herring, and green grapes. I never questioned it.

It's only now, just after my 29th birthday, that I decided to Google it.

It turns out, it's an amalgamation of traditions. The American South eat black eyed peas and collard greens on New Years, to symbolize luck and money in the new year. Poland and parts of Scandinavia eat herring on New Years to bring bounty and prosperity.

And Spain has 'las doce uvas de la suerte', or 'the twelve lucky grapes'. They eat twelve green grapes, one for each month, to ensure good luck in the coming year.

She wasn't Spanish, she wasn't Polish, she wasn't even from the South.

She was 100% New York Italian.

I have to wonder how these traditions came to her, and how she came to follow them. A strange mixture of traditions, distorted over time and space, until they became embedded in my mind, something I do with the passing of every year, for, no reason, really.

It makes me think of all the happenstance to get me to where I am. Bee introducing me to V-tubing. Minty and Anthem making my model. But, let's go even farther back.

Let's talk about a canceled Pokemon fangame and a forgotten sprite comic.

Pokemon Internet Online: Rising Sun, or 'PIO:RS', was a fanmade Pokemon MMO in the early 2000s. And Kid Radd was probably the greatest sprite comic ever made. One was given a cease and desist, the other forgotten.

Without either, I wouldn't be myself.

Without PIO:RS, wouldn't have been the forum post that led me to both Homestar Runner and the sprite comic Bob and George. Both formative for my sense of humor.

Without Bob and George, I wouldn't have seen the ad for GameCheetz, the comic whose community formed the impetus of my tween-age social circle, and would cause aftershocks through my life for many, many years.

Without Kid Radd… I wouldn't know about EarthBound. Kid Radd was a comic that lovingly parodied games and the act of games preservation, in an original setting, from the perspective of when it was made, 2002-2004.

In it was a game parody called 'MOFO'.

I was unaware Kid Radd was an original work. But its parody of MOTHER enraptured me in concept. A game with an unkillable boss, and a secret ending if you hacked past it?

I set to Google. I did not discover MOFO. But I discovered EarthBound, and Starmen.net.

Starmen.net became, of course, Fangamer. And the community begat many facets of internet culture... Of course, Undertale, but even Homestuck owes its name to a parody of the name 'EarthBound'. And I was there, not posting, but watching. Absorbing.

There were, of course, other influences. The Protomen. Splatoon. My experiences as part of a plural system, and my interactions with the plural community at large. My growing and ongoing obsession with media preservation. Desert Bus. Innumerable influences.

All of those things brought me here, now. If even one thing changed, who would I be?

I would not be myself.

I don't really know where I'm going with this. Just… Think on your past. Treasure the things that made you 'you'. Treasure the people you have, and the life you live, if it's one you enjoy.

Happy new year.

To get back on topic… New Years resolutions.

I want to foster a more healthy relationship with content creation and content consumption. I want to find things that make me happy again that aren't just streaming.

But I also want to be able to take those passions and put them back out into the universe. TikTok. YouTube. I want to finally start executing on the plans I've laid but never followed up on.

I want to share myself with the world.

Streaming is not all that I am.

Of course, I want to keep growing. But I'm blessed to have the following I do already. The friends I do already. I can only hope 2022 lays the foundation for me to chase my passions for the rest of my life.

Lacking any other topics, I'd just like to thank a few people.

Touka: thank you for being a friend and an inspiration. I know I keep saying it, but you are a shining light in this community, and I hope that you continue to burn, long and bright.
