Curious Red Wattlebird
flickr
Curious Red Wattlebird by Graeme O'Rourke Via Flickr: This photo was captured in my backyard as this red wattlebird was perched in my Japanese Maple tree. Over the past 12 months it has learnt to trust me and this display I can only put down to this bird trying to ascertain if it was really me behind the camera as the very next capture shows it in a similar low-down pose, but this time looking from its left side. . .or maybe it was checking the brand and model of my camera. It is one of the largest nectar-feeding birds in the world and is the second largest species of honeyeater native to Australia, eclipsed by the yellow wattlebird which is found only in Tasmania. The red wattlebird has a long, specialized tongue to extract nectar from flowers. Its tongue can extend well beyond the tip of its bill, and it is divided at the end to form a brush-like structure with over a hundred bristles that soak up nectar by capillary action. The red wattlebird has mainly grey-brown plumage, red eyes, distinctive pinkish-red wattles** either side of its neck, white streaks on the chest and a large bright yellow patch on the lower belly. The male and female have similar plumage. (**A wattle is a fleshy caruncle from various parts of the head or neck in several groups of birds and mammals and those on the red wattlebird dangle from the lower rear corner of the ear coverts on either side of the neck.) The species is found in southeast Queensland, NSW, Victoria, South Australia and in the southwest of Western Australia, in open forest and woodlands, and is a common visitor to urban gardens and parks. Loud and conspicuous, the red wattlebird is generally found in trees, where it gets most of its food; occasionally it forages on the ground, feeding from a wide variety of flowering plants. Insects also comprise part of its diet. It is territorial and at times aggressive towards birds of other species, often defending rich sources of nectar. Breeding throughout its range, the red wattlebird builds a cup-shaped nest in a tree and raises one or two broods a year.

As curator of his own The Away From Home indie rock festival in Italy, where he headlined alongside acts such as Blossoms and The Cribs this August, Tomlinson confesses to having been One Direction’s secret guitar rock fanatic. “It’s what I grew up listening to,” he says. “There was this really good indie bar in Doncaster where I grew up. It was 10 quid all you could drink. It lasted about 18 months and then the council banned it, but it was f***ing incredible. So that’s where I got into all that indie guitar music and stuff like that. To be honest, I kinda dumbed that down a little bit when I was in the band, obviously, because it was a very different thing, One Direction. So I think as I’ve gone out on my own it’s been about re-finding my roots and guitar music is something that has had a massive influence on my life.”
To this end, Tomlinson hopes to convert his more pop-inclined fans to the ways of the distortion pedal, bed hair and fourth-day jeans. “What’s fascinating to me is watching my fanbase watching [guitar bands], listening to this music and taking a real passion like I do. That makes me really proud.” And also, from a talent show phenomenon who’d otherwise have wanted to become a teacher or sports coach, a touch of popstar payback.
‘If I’m feeling down or if I’m in a bad way my therapy is the guitar’
“Obviously I was a massive Libertines fan growing up,” says Tomlinson of his grungier counterpart. “It’s an honour to me. I really look up to [Doherty] as a songwriter, as a poet, as a creative in general. And I also know that he’s got Andrew’s best interests at heart, which is not something you can always say in these kinds of joint ventures.” The pair haven’t yet met to thrash out the details over a power fry-up, though. “There’s not been a lot of back and forth,” says Tomlinson, “We’re both busy guys. I’d love to sit down and have a chat with him, definitely. That sounds like the kind of business meeting I’d want to turn up to.”

my top bit of advice going into the new year: compliment people. especially strangers. literally everyone you interact with if you can. when you buy coffee in the morning compliment the barista's tattoos. when you're chatting with a coworker tell them that by the way you like their outfit. always find something they've chosen to do on purpose. nail polish, jewellery, tattoos, hair colour/style, statement accessory, outfit, etc are all good bets. things people hope will be noticed. things that aren't too personal so it doesn't make them uncomfortable (eg probably not their physical features). i've gotten into the habit of scanning everyone i talk to for something about them that i think is cool so i can tell them. it's a great habit because it makes me notice people and realise just how many neat little details there are in people's presentation of themselves that might pass me by if i wasn't paying attention. and it brings out so much joy. you'd be surprised how much it disarms people to receive an unexpected compliment from someone they don't know. it is the most sincere smile you will see all day long. it feels nice to make people happy but it also means you win the social interaction. establish dominance by complimenting a stranger's earrings and disappearing into the fog
