Hot off the presses: You can now catch me on the airwaves!

Thanks to an invite from critic Joshua Ray, I am now semi-regularly reviewing films on Friday evenings on KMOV 4 in St. Louis. Joshua and I tag-teamed my first visit to the studio reviewing The Little Mermaid. Check out our takes on KMOV’s website, including what updates were made from the original and what we think of the underwater photography.

And because more people have asked me about my thoughts on The Little Mermaid than any other movie in awhile, I joined Max Foizey (aka Max on Movies) on KTRS for a discussion of how the movie compares to other recent Disney remakes. Listen to it on Soundcloud.

But don’t worry—the bright lights of TV and the broad reach of radio haven’t changed me! You can still find my top Crowd and Critic picks in the order I experienced them in this month’s Round Up. Though I also stopped by KMOV to do an opposites-attract double review of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and You Hurt My Feelings, those reviews aren’t available on their website yet. I’ll share it as soon as it’s posted on their website, but keep scrolling for why I think those films are both worth checking out.

May Crowd-Pleasers

1. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023)

How many writer-directors love their characters as much as James Gunn? His affection makes them a wonderful bunch of weirdos who may be able to fight off their greatest foe yet: audience malaise. Vol. 3 features many classic MCU problems, but unlike almost everything since Endgame, the Guardians keep them in check. 2. Irreconcilable Differences (1984)

Now I have watched every Nancy Meyers movie! (And you can see all of them ranked on Letterboxd.) Though it wasn’t without a little effort. Why is this rom-com so hard to find? Irreconcilable Differences is imperfect, but it's a hidden gem no one should be embarrassed by. Funny and romantic (with a pinch of bitters) all at once, it’s an excellent and hilarious spoof of Hollywood that confirms Drew Barrymore has always had it.

If that doesn’t sell you, consider it feels like a practice run for future hits like Baby Boom, The Parent Trap, It's Complicated and The Intern:

A woman revamps her life with a new career after her family life is upended

A kid tries to get her parents back together

After learning of her husband’s infidelity, a woman must figure out how/if she wants to single parent her daughter

The conniving woman who swipes away her rich father is named Blake (a lá Meredith Blake)

Perhaps it will be telling of the things to come in Paris Paramount? The plot of that work-in-progress is reportedly about two Hollywood types who break up and reunite for a film, and this story is about two Hollywood types working together until they can't make their marriage work. Plus, they make references to Ernst Lubitsch, who inspired the upcoming title. All this to say, I can't wait for whatever that film is whenever some studio isn't silly enough to let this project get away from them. Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 7/10

3. The Album by the Jonas Brothers (2023)

The Jo Bros are back with their boppy pop-timism! This album feels like 4th of July weekend, and not just the track called “Americana.” Every second sounds like summer, and not just “Summer in the Hamptons” and “Summer Baby.” With mentions of baseball, July heat, and at least nine U.S. states (plus a shout-out to our Missouri icon Nelly), it’s meant to be played at a picnic or poolside. The best track, “Waffle House,” taps into one of their most reliable wells: autobiography. In that same vein, does their daughter-doting track “Little Bird” mean they have entered their Dad Rock phase? Somehow it looks good on them.

4. Fast X (2023)

If this is not the silliest movie I’ve ever seen, I can’t remember what beats it. But is it also my favorite Fast and Furious flick aside from the very-differently-vibed Hobbs & Shaw? Kudos to Jason Mamoa for creating the exact over-the-top villain a dumb movie like this needs. Eleven titles in, this franchise follows no rules, and neither does he. Crowd: X/X // Critic: 5/X

5. Missing (2023)

A thriller that takes place entirely within screens may be a gimmick, but it’s a surprisingly engaging one thanks to the clever ways technology is used and thanks to actors like Joaquim de Almeida bringing those screens to life. Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 8/10

6. Falling Down (1993)

The chaos of the world literally drives Michael Douglas to violence! Imagine every terrible thing you’ve wanted to do when someone cuts you off in traffic or you can’t order from the breakfast menu at 10:31, and you’ll get a pretty good idea of how bananas and unpredictable this action thriller is. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 7.5/10

7. Double Feature: Female-Directed Rom-Coms: The Wedding Date (2005) + Rosaline (2022)

The full description of this double feature should be, “Female-directed rom-coms about women who work with a forced love interest to win back an ex while a relative gets married, but then it turns out she’s in love with the forced love interest after all.” In The Wedding Date (Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 6.5/10), Debra Messing hires escort Dermot Mulroney as her date for sister Amy Adams’ wedding because the Best Man is an ex she still loves. In Rosaline (Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 7.5/10), Romeo’s one-time lover (Kaitlyn Dever) attempts to break up his new romance with her cousin Juliet all while hiding her plotting from her dad (Bradley Whitford) and nurse (Minnie Driver). Unfortunately, I have no clue how you can watch Rosaline anymore thanks to Disney’s not-user-friendly decision to remove select content (with no clear rationale) from Disney+ and Hulu, which also includes my beloved The World According to Jeff Goldblum.

8. Kandahar (2023)

As you might expect from this paint-by-numbers action-war-thriller, I can’t explain back to you the real world political implications of Kandahar, but its race across the desert plot engine is more than thrilling enough to sustain it. Read my full review for ZekeFilm. Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 7/10

9. Higher Than Heaven by Ellie Goulding (2023)

Ellie Goulding’s breathy sopranos are back for melancholy synth electro-pop about the dream state that is falling in love and the disorientation of heartbreak. Cue up “Cure for Love” or “Easy Lover” for a dance party and “Tastes Like You” for angsty swooning.

May Critic Picks

1. The Coronation

You know I love some pomp and circumstance! More than anything, I’m fascinated by a significant historical moment, which means I have no qualms about any mixed (or less-than-positive feelings) about the monarchy. I have found myself digging into the symbolism of the objects and rituals as well as what the decisions about the ceremony might mean for Charles's reign. A few pieces that got me thinking:

2. The Virgin Suicides (1999)

Now I have watched every Sofia Coppola movie! (And you can see all of them ranked on Letterboxd.) Like Bonnie and Clyde, it so blew me away with its dreamy visuals and complex writing I needed to know what Roger Ebert and other critics thought before I could fall asleep. Crowd: 7/10 // Critic: 10/10

3. Jesus Christ Superstar National Tour

I’ve rarely (if ever) made connections between Jesus and heavy metal music, but Jesus Christ Superstar made it work better than I anticipated. This Andrew Lloyd Weber musical is also more poignant than I expected. Though not 100% Biblically consistent, making you sit and watch Jesus be lashed 39 times and then hang in near-silence on the cross challenges you to reckon with His suffering in a way I hadn’t before. It also forced me to consider about Judas’s point of view in new ways. Because of the scream-o musical style that made it difficult to understand all of the lyrics, I’m not sure I’ll be rushing to this show again, but I’m glad I made the time for this innovative and moving production.

4. Alfred Hitchcock Marathon: The 39 Steps (1935), Foreign Correspondent (1940), Mr. and Mrs. Smith (1941), Rope (1948), I Confess (1953)

For no particular reason, I went on a “Hitch-kick” this month. My favorites:

The 39 Steps: A fun practice run for North by Northwest!

Foreign Correspondent: An exciting war journalism thriller! I’ve added it to my Letterboxd list of my favorite journalism films.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith: Because Hitchcock could apparently direct anything, a romantic comedy that makes a great double feature with You Hurt My Feelings!

Rope: The perfect murder gone wrong thanks to the sleuthing of Jimmy Stewart!

I Confess: A priest (Montgomery Clift) must figure out what to do when a parishioner confesses to murder!

5. Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (2006-07)

Justice for Studio 60! I’ve always gotten the vibe this behind-the-scenes dramedy about an SNL-style show is the underwhelming, ignored stepchild for Aaron Sorkin fans. Now that I’ve watched its single season, I’m thinking that must be because A) it followed the nearly-flawless hit that is The West Wing, and B) it had the unfortunate timing to premiere within a month of the similarly-named and premised (and intentionally much funnier) 30 Rock on the same network. Whatever the reason, it’s not that Matthew Perry wasn’t firing on all cylinders, that anyone is better lovelorn than Bradley Whitford, or that its interrogation of the intersection of comedy and politics isn’t relevant today. Though Sorkin and Co. got enough notice to craft a satisfying finale, I wish we lived in a world where this was just the beginning of seven seasons with Matt, Danny, Jordan, Simon, Harriet, Tom, Cal, and Jack.

What if you got caught in one of your little white lies? When author Beth (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) overhears her husband Don (Tobias Menzies) admit he hates her new book after years of singing its praises to her face, she spirals. It’s a comedy of manners, and it’s refreshingly grown-up, honest, and light on its feet. Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 8.5/10

8. Rashomon (1950)

Before The Last Duel, there was Rashomon. When a samurai dies in mysterious circumstances, a tribunal hears everyone’s side of the story. The twist: No two people’s stories are exactly alike, so it’s less about the facts and more about the truth behind everyone’s reasons for how they tell their stories. Crowd: 7.5/10 // Critic: 10/10

9. Every Good Endeavor by Tim Keller (2014)

I was almost finished with Keller’s book about finding meaning in our work when he passed on May 19. His book has been an encouragement to me in a challenging time, as have several other books and articles in his career. His obituaries in The Washington Post and The New Yorker capture why he meant a lot to many people.

Fallen angel!Eddie x Angel!reader ( a part of Mochiro’s halloween blurbs)

TRIGGER WARNING: descriptive self-harm, ANGST. LIKE,HEAVY ANGST, hurt/no comfort, religious passages and imagery.

Author’s note: SURPRISE!! This is heavily inspired by Hozier’s “Francesca” from his new album, Unreal Unearth. (Give it a listen for more feels hehe) I am not by any means trying to disrespect or impose ideas about religion. This is just my imagination even though the passages are from the bible. I have only noted them for more depth and understanding of this short wee-blurb. (At least for me its short hehe) this is not beta’d as usual so I might edit it in the future. The light shone through the branches of the trees slowly swaying with the wind,through the stained glass adorning the temple where the angels kneel and pray to their father. From day to night, they hail his name and pray, wishing all beings of earth united till the end of its days.

The temple is slowly becoming empty, each angel filling out of the place to go back to their post after the morning prayer. You stood up from your kneeling position, delicate hands dusting your white clothes as you look around for an angel that always takes your breath away.

And there he was,standing tall, his wings neatly folded behind in his back. His eyes gleaming in gold were already focused on you. Soft,golden curls adorning the frame of his face that suit his golden eyes and delicate pale skin. You gave him the biggest smile that you can muster, footsteps getting faster before he meets you in the middle and swooped you up for a hug.

Holding you gently to avoid hurting you and your wings, he peered down with a smile adjacent to yours. “Hello my sweet little angel. My little cherub.” The title made your nose scrunch,making him giggle. “Hello, Eddie. The archangel of mine.” You softly whispered, a blush slowly blooming in your cheeks when you felt his warmth on your body. He lowered you down slowly, intertwining your hands together while you both walk out of the temple.

“How is your sleep?” You looked up at him under your lashes, face laced with worry as you notice the slightly darker hue under his eyes becoming more and more apparent each day that passes. It looks like its slowly ruining the serenity that is always seen on his face. Eddie gave you a small smile, lovingly tucking some loose strands of your hair behind your ear.

“I am fine, my angel. I have been having more.. nightmares as each day passes. I am going to have a meeting with father soon, maybe he knows where all of this are coming from. His face became a bit solemn, golden-eyes looking tired. The heavy weight of silence weighed on you both, scared at the possible meaning of his dreams. No. You cannot afford that to happen. The prophecy— it should not be him; you thought to yourself as the spirit inside of you felt a surge of uneasiness.

You stopped walking beside him, making him halt as he looks at you with confusion. Your soft hands felt warm on his cheeks when you grabbed his face. Your eyes pleaded for him, you pillow-like lips placing a soft kiss on his forehead. A kiss full of genuine love that surpasses all heavenly beings known. A kiss higher than heaven where you both reside. A kiss full of wishes that you will be spending the eternity with him.

A kiss full of pleading that he stays with you even when all things crumble.

And have mercy on those who doubt (Jude 1:22)

A loud sound had woken you up from your deep slumber, making you scramble on the other side of the bed, looking for a certain figure as you try to open your eyes. The silky sheets felt cold beneath your touch, taking away the sleepiness in your being.

You were about to stand up to look for him before someone pushed the door open, the familiar golden wavy curls peaking from it. Eddie walked in to your room, the bags underneath his eyes getting darker and darker each day.

He sat beside you, hands red for unknown reason as if he had been washing it for the hundred time. You clutched the covers close to your chest, voice slightly wavering when his eyes found yours.

“Eddie.. Eddie, my love, what happened?” His lips slowly trembled, his eyes glassy as he try to blink his tears away. Gulping, he took such a deep sigh and took your hands to his, pressing it onto his chest.

“Angel.. me— me and father had an argument.” He gently whispered, looking down at your hands that are emitting warmth and comfort. “It started with me.. telling him I am having nightmares. Dreams. Dreams that I am not supposed to have as one of his archangels.” Eddie paused, his eyes now glued on your as he continue.

Your heart beats loudly within your chest, an ominous feeling looming in. It was slowly getting harder to breathe as you search his eyes for anything that might give you a clue. Nodding your head, you urged him to continue.

“I— I did not know what happened. Then I voiced out how— how I think humans deserve more. How, maybe— maybe they needed to be taught more instead of being challenged or their faith being tested.. it became— it became a massive argument. Father said I am slowly turning into a different- different being. And I denied it. As I think I am not. I am still the same! I— I made him understand that it isn’t just me that were against the way. That there were other angels that felt that way too. He looked at me in disappointment. In shame. I-I do not understand why!”

Eddie’s voice boomed, the loud sound bouncing off the walls while the beating of your heart can be heard in your ears. A lone tear cascaded down your cheek, watching your lover slowly crumble before you as he wrap his arms around you. His broken sobs replicating his emotions, raw and just— broken.

You clutched him close to you, closing your eyes in sadness while more tears dripped down. Your hands found its way in his wings, caressing the feathers lovingly, trying to ease his pain.

Kissing the top of his head as you comfort your lover, your breath hitched when you noticed something different. Your gut falling on the depths of fear, eyes widening as your breathing completely stopped.

Eddie took notice of the sudden stillness of your actions, pulling back a tad bit to look at you, confusion swirling in his puffy red eyes.

“What— what’s wrong, angel?”

A gasp left your mouth, pulling your hands back to cover it as you’re now the one slowly crumbling in his embrace.

“No.. oh— oh gods no! N-not you. No— no Eddie it cannot be you!” Emotions are now overwhelming your whole being, you feel lightheaded, as if fate is pulling such a cruel joke on the two of you. Panic slowly settling in as you clasp your hands together, bowing in prayer. You were reciting every prayer you know in such a way that Eddie cannot even comprehend and understand each word.

He took hold of your shoulders, shaking you once in such a force that snapped you out of the frenzy you are feeling. “What is wrong! Tell me!”

Glazed eyes looking at his freckled skin, you whispered.

“Eddie.. your hair.. is turning black. The— the prophecy.. is you.”

And the fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star fallen from heaven to earth, and he was given the key to the shaft of the bottomless pit. (Revelation 9:1)

All you have seen from Eddie before you got pulled away was red.

Red was dripping from his back, his pristine-white wings that once adorned his back are now gone, being replaced by a huge gaping wound where his wings were once attached. His hands and nails now adorned with dried blood from ripping his wings apart by himself, body full of clawing marks when he tried to tore more of himself before the father and his seraphims.

The brown doe-eyes of his are now gone, black replacing every inch of the eyes that you love. Hair as black as ebony and the night sky combined, the only thing remaining of him was his pale skin and the smile that he always gives you.

He was contesting the higher angels, the thrones and dominions. Other angels behind him before the trumpet was blown, everyone immediately running with their swords unsheathed, craving for blood and peace which made you laugh with how you have never thought both to be in the same sentence.

You watched with wide eyes and trembling hands before running towards him, trying to push away every angel that slams on you while you try to reach him. He stands in the middle, face somber while watching the bloodshed happening around him, the seraphim holding its ground, voice eerily unsettling as he spoke in tongues.

Eddie looked up at him, showing wide-menacing grin before he answered in the same manner. You shouted his name, repeating it like a prayer before his head turned into your direction.

You stopped in front of him, wiping the blood away from his face while your tears kept on coming down. You shook your head before turning around to face the seraphim.

“Please..” you pleaded, voice hoarse and raw with pain, guilt, and repentance. “Please.. once more. Just give him a chance once more..” the seraphim knew what you were pleading for, closing its eyes to let you deliver your message directly to your father.

“He is misunderstood. He just needs another chance. He— he needs our prayers. He needs us. Father— father please. I beg of you. I beg for your kindness. I beg for your forgiveness. I shall kneel my whole life! Just— just forgive him and let him be with me, here in your house, for eternity! Let me pay for his sins!” Your voice cracked, hands clasped as you shield your lover from the Seraphim’s eyes that are void of emotions and just a glowing light, slowly closing its eyes. You were willing to do anything for eternity just for them to forgive Eddie.

You were willing to die for him again and again if that would be enough to repay and repent for the sins that he did. For the chaos he unleashed.

Eddie hated the way your voice trembled, the way you are ready to sell yourself to the higher beings just for him to be forgiven. His emotions were swirling inside his head, his grip on his sword slowly getting tighter as he gets ready to push you aside and stab the seraphim in front of him. He almost moved before the seraphim opened its eyes once more, a booming sound from the skies was heard.

“No, child. It is not your sins for you to repent. It is not your tears for you to cry. It is not your decision for you to ask. Now, move. Or he will feel the everlasting sadness and fall into the depths, not only of the place I prepared for him, but also the depth of his broken heart.”

You shook your head, tears still flowing as you whisper broken prayers as you sob.

The seraphim closed his eyes before opening it once again, another voice that sounds like 10 angels are speaking at the same time was heard.

“Very well. Now, you have made your choice.”

It happened in a split second, a bright light blinded you before you felt a dull pain in your chest. Red bloomed on your chest that is now bearing a hole, making you clutch it as you fall into your knees. Eddie gasped, letting go of his longsword and immediately kneeling beside you, pulling you close.

“No— no my angel.. no.. no this c-can’t— can’t be— no no no” Eddie repeatedly called out your true name, his tears washing away the blood splattered in his face as he watch the pink of your cheeks disappear, the life in your body slowly escaping his reach and slowly drifting away towards the hands of a foe and a friend, death.

The now dark-haired angel clutch you close to him, trying to pour his heavenly magic even though he knows its worthless. Yet he still tried, draining his energy and emotions. You just gave him the biggest smile the you can muster, laying your bloodied hand on his cheeks and rubbing it gently.

“Maybe..” you breathed out, feeling it your eyelids slowly becoming heavy. “H-heaven is not .. fit to house..” you clutched your chest in pain, heaving as you try to finish your sentence.

“Maybe.. heaven is not fit to house.. a love like you and I..” you managed to breath out. Eyes smiling when your hand slowly cascade down his cheek.

“I would not change it each time.. heaven is not fit to house a love like you and I.”

Your hand dropped, as well as his tears.

And with your last breath.

You showed him the greatest love.

Greater than god.

Higher than the heavens.

Now, what is there to say about Powerwolf that hasn't been said already? They're one of the fastest growing, beloved bands I've ever seen! Ever since their "We Drink Your Blood" music clip, they exploded, and it has been nothing but banger after banger since then! Their album covers, oh my god don't even get me started, they're so good, so cool looking! I love this band, if you can't already tell. CATCH TWENTYFIVE is the 2nd full album by MIGHTY DEVIL's most known soloist, HERO. the mini album was released on the artist's birthday, october 4th, consisting of ten tracks, with PULL THE TRIGGER serving as the album's title track. the second full album reached higher than any of the artist's previous albums could, and the title track quickly became one of the most replayed songs on spotify. the first week of the album release, PULL THE TRIGGER rose to number four on the charts, making it HERO's second song to enter the top 10 on the billboard charts ( with the first one being DANCE FOR TWO from the previous year, ranked in 5th place ).

literally one of HERO's best eras, you cannot prove me wrong!

despite waiting for so long, fans were present for the album drop and couldn't stop streaming the songs! the music video for the title song racked up an amazing 25 million views in the first 24 hours!

PULL THE TRIGGER dabbles with the synth-wave genre and is aided by footfalls of percussion and atmospheric synths, which is something that the artist never played with but always talked about doing a song with those vibes in mind.

no one expected HERO's hair to be longer than his usual length, but literally, no one complained because it looked fabulous on him! the singer stated that he "wanted to try something new" and ended up liking it so much that he refused to cut it.

HERO admitted that he had so much fun working with other idols in the fic industry and that he's glad he approached them with the idea when, not even two years ago, he was avoiding others like the plague.

PULL THE TRIGGER received a jaw-dropping 13 wins on music shows, which, in the end, wasn't as surprising to ODDITIES as they expected many wins since they knew how popular the song would be as soon as the track list was announced, and after the singer released a highlight medley!

this comeback was really something else, and it really showed how HERO got out of his safety zone to interact more with other idols as well as with his fans. ODDITIES can’t help but hope that he stays that way!
