I love the process of figuring out how to make my lizard’s tank more interesting and comfortable without being able to communicate with him. I wove this free form cave/tunnel for my lizard thinking he would like the extra coverage with some of the heat from the heat lamp dappling through. It has two openings so he could sleep or walk through it.
….and he hated it. He wouldn’t go near it most of the time, and when he did he looked uncomfortable and wouldn’t linger. He is generally pretty change adverse, so I kept it in the tank for a couple of weeks thinking he might warm up to it, but he never did so I took it out.
From watching him (grumpily) interact with it, the biggest issue seemed to be that the rattan I used wasn’t smooth, so he was getting poked when walking along the walls. I ended up hot gluing cardboard along the bottom edges, the openings, and a few bands along the top, which made it look a little less nice but was definitely better in texture. It also seemed like it was almost too open, so not good for sleeping without him feeling exposed. I decided to move it to a different place in the tank and lean it against a rock, so that the top of the cave was lower.
And these changes worked! Within the first week with he was hesitant but not nearly as agitated, and by the second week he’s spent most days hanging out under it.
Something about making things with your hands for a little creature living in your house and seeing them sleep and feel safe in it…literally the best

what's "mha"?
Mha is, dear anon, the "mysterious hrab anon". Fandom lore. It started from hrab, who is a crab with Hannibal's face on it and an amazing fanfiction written by @petrowriting . Then this anon started being hrab's #1 fan and sending cursed hrab asks to anyone and oh god I won't even mention wobster who is a lobster who has Will's face. Just normal fandom stuff.

A new edition to my oddities collections, a really beautiful vintage american stoat! (mustela richardsonii) I found it in my local antique store, but it comes from a north dakota trapper who was downsizing his collection, and is believed to have been tanned in the 70’s. I’m so excited to have it! The fur is extremely soft compared to my coyote pelt I have.

From pigeon droppings to wading in excrement, the traditional craft of tanning skins in Fez, Morocco is a dirty job. But the result is the world’s most supple leather.

I finally got my two caribou hides tanned today and now I just have to wait a week for them to be finished drying. I'm experimenting so one of them got a brine soak and the other just had the straight salt, but they both got pretty damp because I've been banished to the woodshed and its been raining for days.
I'm contemplating what to do with these and though they're fine as rugs, I really wanna try making a parka. Depends on how the tan goes.
The primary ingredient of well tanned hides is elbow grease. My hands are sore.
