i know a lot of tsc fans give cassandra clare a lot of shit for making the characters from the infernal device & the last hours look so much alike their descendants in the mortal instruments & the dark artifices, like cecily’s blue eyes and black hair being passed down onto alec, or henry’s read hair being passed down to clary, claiming it’s unrealistic and not exactly how heredity works, BUT i’ve been visiting my grandmother the last few days and i found a picture of my great-great grandmother (who’s about the age of the tlh gang) and she looks EXACTLY like my dad, who btw looks exactly like me as well. so it’s not so far fetched that some of the tsc characters share some physical features with their ancestors

In due course, Wells's speculation concerning criminal brightness was reinforced by a library of studies, including an American investigation of one thousand juvenile offenders, which concluded that there was no evidence for the heritability of criminality as such, and Cyril Burt's analysis of juvenile delinquents, with convincingly argued, in line with its American counterparts, that social environment had a good deal to do with delinquency.

Have an Autoimmune Disease? Blame the Black Death
More from The Department of What Doesn’t Kill You Makes Your Life Miserable.
If my autoimmune-disease-riddled brain understands this correctly, gene variants that were more resistant to the plague happened to also be the ones associated with making your immune system go cuckoobananapants and start attacking your body. So a lot of the people with those variants survived the pandemic and became the ancestors of us schmucks with our lupus and our Crohn’s and our rheumatoid arthritis and our what have you.

Male Cats are Confusing >lT
OK, so I’ve got a question. How do male cats pass down color genes? If only the X carries color, how does the male pass on genes like Bb? Or are his genes always homozygous? BB instead of Bb, and bb father and Bb or bb mother is the only was to have a bb or Bb child.
Does... that make sense?
I started a cat genetics project years ago and realized half way through that the male cats color genetics are weird as hell. I kinda just quit the project after that, but I’m starting something similar and this remains an issue.
At first I though a male could have both orange and black genes, so thats what I put down in the punnet squares, however this is apparently not the case.
I basically need an in depth guide to male cat genetics and how to use punnet squares with them.

Mothers Day Picks
Tumblr media
Sunday is Mother’s Day. So if you are a dutiful child or spouse, why not treat the mother in your life to a home made meal, and a film where motherhood plays an important part?
Psycho (1960)
Tumblr media
A truly touching story of a boy’s love for his mother. This is a film where a young man does what he can to protect his mother from a tragic disease, which is terminal lifelessness. In the end, meddling people separate the two, but she understands, since he will be provided for, in a state facility. It means she will no longer have to be concerned about wanton women satisfying their ugly appetites with her food, and her son!
Addams Family Values (1993)
Tumblr media
In the second Paramount Feature film, for the only time, Morricia has a third child. A very loving wife and mother, she is very protective of her family, be it helping her spouse reach his brother from beyond, or her daughter’s plans to run around naked and seduce the local minister, as long as she completes college first.
Mother’s Day (1980)
Tumblr media
There aren’t enough films for Mother’s day, so I’m grateful a special film was made for this special day. It deals with a mother and her close relationship with her two sons and disabled daughter in a rural area of New Jersey. This happy family bonds together by torturing and more the strangers they encounter. This film was not initially well received, but as time goes on, has received greater acceptance. Initially this film was banned in the United Kingdom by the British Board of Film Classification. But we know how uptight the Brits can be. The film was remade in 2011.
Heredity (2018)
Tumblr media
A film about a mother, and her learning of the family traditions of being part of a witches coven. In time, she (like any good mother) helps her son achieve a leadership position in the organization her family is a part of.
Evil Dead Rise (2023)
Tumblr media
Of course, maybe you might want to take mom out of the house, and make an evening of it, by catching a film? Well where I am, “Evil Dead Rise” is playing at a nearby movie theater, so why not bring the whole family to this film about a mother, and how devoted she is, to the family she wants to stay with her?

Like i promised, here is a quick lesson covering the entirety of high school bio heredity. Be warned it's been a couple of years.
So this all started with Gregor Mendel and some peas and he basically observed that some traits are dominant while others are recessive. Let's go with flower color because i remember that. So when he crosses a purple flower plant (AA) and a white flower plant (aa), all of the offspring would be purple (Aa) but if he combined the offspring with one another, 25% of that group would have white flowers, 25% would be purple AA flowers and the rest would be Aa purple flowers. All of the denotations like Aa are phenotypes where a capital letter is dominant and a lowercase is recessive. Someone come correct me if i'm wrong.
Now, why do we need to know about Mendel and his peas? Well, it's a good place to start before we get into the dumpster fire that are blood types.
So there are a /lot/ of different antigens that blood has, but we're gonna use the most important ones which have been given normal names. So there's types A,B,AB, and O and then the rh-factor can be positive or negative. The rh factor is simple domant/recessive with positive being the purple flowers and negative being the white flowers.
But A/B/AB/O is codominant. Let's say person A has type A blood. (Such creative names i know). A could either have two A alleles (fancy word for the type of gene) which would be denoted I^AI^A or 1 A allele and 1 O allele which would be denoted I^Ai. Then person B has--you guessed it--type B blood. B could have either 2 B alleles (I^BI^B)or 1 O allele. (I^Bi)
Then let's say A and B meet and have a kid. Let's call this person C. In the case that both A and B are both homozygotes (same gene so I^AI^A and I^BI^B), C would have type AB blood (I^AI^B) which is why it's called codominance. Both alleles are equally dominant and thus equally expressed. But if A and B were heterozygous (I^Ai and I^Bi) just let me pull out a punnet square
I^A i
I^B I^AI^B I^Bi
i I^Ai ii
So C has a 25% chance of being AB, B, A, or O (which is the ii in the corner). So yeah it's a bit of a dumpster fire but it's also kinda fun. I know the notation is messy while typing but i can't do subscripts on tumblr so I^A and I^B are gonna have to suffice. Questions, comments, concerns? Send me an ask or rb this thing idc

Is Colon Cancer Hereditary
Tumblr media
Colon cancer is a prevalent and potentially fatal disease, so understanding the causes and risk factors is critical. The link between genetics and colon cancer is a major source of anxiety, with many people concerned about their family history and how it affects their vulnerability to the disease.
This article delves into the complex relationship between genetics and colon cancer, addressing the riddles behind its inherited origins.
Several inherited factors influence the development of colon cancer. Inherited illnesses like familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) and Lynch syndrome raise the likelihood of acquiring this form of cancer. Genetic mutations in genes such as MLH1, MSH2, MSH6, PMS2, EPCAM, MUTYH, and STK11 can all contribute to the development of colon cancer.
Family history is also a major factor in determining colon cancer risk. Individuals with a first-degree relative diagnosed with colon cancer are more likely to develop the disease themselves. However, not all occurrences of colon cancer are hereditary. Nonetheless, individuals with an inherited vulnerability may benefit from earlier and more frequent screening.
