1- complex brain-computer interfacing/very surgical and precise process. helmsman is more aware/consciously is the ship
or
2- helmsman’s sole purpose is as ship’s power source/battery. little to no surgical aspects of integration. wires do all the work basically

Heir time!! Not heir of time, just my ideas on the class. Specifically the way an aspect connects with pre-sburb life and medium adventures.
Heirs are known for having immense amounts of their aspects but it's not easy to control. It doesn't even seem like they're supposed to. More like harnessed with awesome vibes.
It's seen pre-SBURB as John Egbert is able to get out of any scuffle with his dad. He is never able to be pinned down. This continues into the Medium and spreads to his teammates as none of them are stuck for long. Jade Harley can teleport, Dave Strider can travel through time, and Rose Lalonde can see and take actions towards the optimal future.
Unconsciously harnessing their aspect is also seen through Equius Zahhak, a Heir of Void. Throughout the series he is not mentioned often, and he is portrayed as unappealing to the readers which actually plays into the aspect well. After the trolls are effectively blocked from winning the game, they are able to hide in the void of their SBURB session. In fact, they are so well hidden that they are never found until Vriska Serket tries to solo Jack Noir.
I admittedly cannot remember much of Mituna Captor, a Heir of Doom. What I would theorize is that pre-SBURB he had a ton of constraints. This can actually be seen in the Captors' ancestor, Ψiioniic (yes. I had to copy and paste this name), who is bound to the Condesce's ship as the Helmsmen. Though the aspect obviously carries over later in the session when Mitunia and his eleven teammates die. A big whoopsie.

Want to know my favorite little known homestuck fact? Not headcanon. Fact. Heavily textually supported fact.
So we know lowbloods, particularly goldbloods, frequently have “psiionic” powers which seem to mostly consist of telekinesis and the ability to shoot lasers from their eyes. Lowbloods with these powers are frequently forced into service as “Helmsmen” in the Imperial Fleet where they are implied to serve as basically the ship’s engine.
In Hiveswap Act 1, attempting to use Xefros’s powers on I think the autotune mic (but it may have been another electrical object) laughingly dismisses the idea that troll psiionics are electricity or can be used to power things.
In Hiveswap Friendsim Volume 4, Vikare’s story revolves around his obsession with flight and his attempts to invent powered air craft, making it explicitly clear that Alternia never invented aeronautics. They have no flight technology.
Are you beginning to see where I’m going here?
ALTERNIAN SPACE SHIPS AREN’T POWERED.
THEY JUST HAVE TELEKINETIC TROLLS PICK THE SHIPS UP AND THROW THEM.
HELMSMEN ARE LITERALLY PROPELLING THE SHIPS THROUGH SPACE TELEKINETICLY.
I mean, when you think about it, it makes sense! Why bother with rocket fuel and wings when you have a planet full of people who can make shit fly with their minds? But still, it’s hilarious to me that this incredibly technologically advanced civilization doesn’t have engines in their ships and don’t know how they work because when they need to go somewhere they just have THE LOWBLOOD GET OUT AND PUSH.

FTF Calculations: Battleship Condescension Auxiliary Power
Doc Scratch here describes the HIC's backup Helmsmen as pushing the ship "near light speed".
Now unfortunately, near light speed is a very vague descriptor, so to account for all possible ends of it, I'm going to use multiple ends of relativistic speed to try and calc the ship's kinetic energy.
90% the speed of light would be 269,813,200 m/s. 75% light speed would be 224,844,300 m/s. And 50% light speed would be 149,896,200 m/s.
I established in a previous calc using this source that the Battleship Condescension was 400 meters long and 300 meters wide. Assuming it has a similar height to the Golden Vessel, it would be around 100 meters tall as well. That gets us a total area of 12,000,000 cubic meters.
Source:
Titanium (a material commonly used in spaceship construction) weighs 4,549 kilograms per cubic meter. Multiply that together and we get 54,588,000,000 kilograms. Since the space ship is a lived-in structure, I'll assume it's 80% hollow (in real life, the Empire State Building is roughly this hollow), getting us 10,917,600,000 kg.

397,396,070,407,077,000,000,000,000 joules, or 95 Petatons of TNT. (Multi-Continent level)

I was never expecting contintent busting Homestuck to be this consistent. Sollux has, like, three calcs on that level that he directly scales to now.

now i am thinking abt trigun homestuck au tho. vash and knives are gemini psionics who came out of the caverns together and share a lusus. vash has red eyes knives has blue eyes. knives escapes conscription and is trying to take down the empire by attacking ships and freeing helmsmen who join his cause. vash managed to hide the fact that he’s a psionic but got conscripted anyway as idk a threshecutioner or whatever.

Me evily trying to get my friends down the splatoon to homestuck pipline (it does not exist, they just have an area called Alterna) (LH)
but also!! stuff like splatoon's music (since every track has like a canonical band/in-game artist behind it) really makes me wonder what music in alternian or beforan would sound like, since we only ever see their language/alphabet and not how things are pronounced or said! big missed opportunity imo -KPA

whats your opinion on HIC x The Helmsmen? I mean its obviously abusive, seeing as he is grafted into the flagship (as is the fate for many honey bloods) but beyond that. Also your thoughts on how the community views/viewed it.
Find it amusing in a sense that another goldblood steals away a fuchsia from a violetblood. It is unknown if Dualscar is even aware. Which makes it sadder.
It is interesting as a sort of dark ship. The Helmsmen had lost his leader and yearns for the death to join the Signless. But The Condescension is at his side to extend his life little by little. Her red feelings towards him is to help move the ship, but also is just feelings of pure lust. Part of me wants to see a fic, a side story about the Helmsmen's own thoughts of living with The Condescension up to his death.
I remember people had liked it for the darker shipping tones. Even with the abuse that would lead to his death, people were still interested looking into how insane HIC was and how the Helmsman was able to last this long, as a lowblood should have a shorter lifespan.
I don't think the present modern fandom views it as much when they were introduced. They mostly brush it as the events happened. She was horrible to use him as a living battery to the point he dies because of it. Which makes her having to travel long enough to see her planet and race died. Along with HIC ends up being dead at [S]Collide, they no longer see her as a threat because she is not present anymore. Why care about her when we should focus on Dirk, Calliope, and Davekat? That's all that matters to the current fanbase.
We don't get much details or thoughts on what HIC did with his corpse or what were her last thoughts of him before her attention was back to Alternia. Even if it were explored by Hussie, chances are, it will get the fandom upset because they are surprised that the villain is acting like a villain. Skaianet System proves that when Her Imperial Condescension was shown doing horrible things in different time periods that are historic in both good and bad. As well as to having raped a different man, prior to meeting Cornel Sassacre.

Trolls have subdermal armor plates. These grow in under their skin during the subadult stage of their life (6-10 sweeps, when most combative adaptations are growing in) and allow the troll protection against most attacks. These are semiflexible, albeit only to the extent that might allow a troll to retain most of their range of movement, and although they're typically invisible to the naked eye due to the layer of skin over them, they have seams to allow for the troll to move. The gaps between subdermal plates are vulnerable to attack, at least more so than the rest of the body, and though difficult to target they're pretty much the only thing that can kill an adult or close-to-adult troll with any consistency.
Although most trolls have heavier, more solid bone plates, excepting mutation olives, violets, and fuchsias have much more flexible armor. Olives, due to their caste mutation, have no natural objects within their bodies that cannot be squeezed, shifted, or distorted in order to fit into spaces another troll might be unable to fit in. Violets and fuchsias are adapted to the deep pressure of the ocean and need mobility in the deep sea zones they tend to roam. As such, all three castes don't have overly solid subdermal plates (or bones in general).
As advantageous as subdermals are, they come with a fair deal of drawbacks. The first and most obvious of these is the comparative lack of nerves in a troll's body, which severely reduces their sensitivity to touch and increases their pain tolerance. Trolls, especially compared to humans, are somewhat numb to their surroundings, as their sense of touch is both muffled by their subdermals and not incredibly developed as a whole, not offering any advantage in particular except in interpersonal relationships, which the evolution of the Empire slowly shuffled out of importance in favor of individual success.
The second is plate warping, a condition that emerges if a troll keeps foreign objects such as piercings or loose shards of shattered plates in during the week-long molting process, which causes the new layer of subdermals under the layer being shed to deform around the object. Over time, this causes the plate to reinforce its new shape until the distortion grows to the point that it actively endangers the troll's health. The majority of trolls with such decorations either keep them in areas that are easier to catch during early stages of a plate warp or play it safe and remove them around molting time. This doesn't mean, of course, that this stops some trolls. It just means that the only way to stop this particular condition is to remove the offending plates before they can reinforce themselves, which is difficult, tedious, and very painful and most trolls would prefer to avoid it.

I’ve seen other interpretations, but the way I write Cirava’s level of psychic power is that prior to The Incident they were right on the borderline of helmsman-grade psionics; like, they could maybe have qualified for the lowest grade of helmsman, fit to power the smallest, slowest class of ship in the Fleet, with all the psi power boosters that I’m sure are a standard part of a helmsblock already. (It makes more sense to me that a helmsrig includes boosters than that Alternia produces a steady supply of psionics who are naturally and without aid capable of throwing building-sized if not small-mountain-sized objects at interstellar speeds or crashing small planets into each other.) Possibly with the helmsblock technicians of whatever ship they were installed in still having to compromise on performance, or else juice them with additional performance enhancers that would burn them out notably faster than a typical goldblood helmsman.
Like, they would have been a bottom-of-the-barrel helmsman if they were even capable of it at all. They’re telekinetic enough for it to be worth mentioning, but weren’t really capable of any feats more impressive than throwing things across the room, and wouldn’t have been considered worth the effort of helmsman processing (particularly not being snatched from Alternia for it while still under the age of majority; even Azdaja and Kuprum can’t say that) if they hadn’t been falsely reported as, like, Sollux-level powerful.
I figure there’s probably more yellowbloods with Cirava’s level of psionics than Sollux/Azdaja/Kuprum’s (even though powerful psychics are the most commonly represented category among the named characters), and they’re generally only made into helmsmen if they have no other useful skills, unless there’s a shortage of helmsmen during the sweep they’re conscripted. Like, the Empire would rather have a talented technician or fighter or craftstroll or entertainer than a shitty helmsman, under most circumstances.
This is largely irrelevant after they gouged their eye out, however. I imagine that they’re still a little bit telekinetic - Sollux flung the meteor all the way to the Green Sun with no eyes at all, so clearly it’s not as simple as “telekinesis is stored in the eyeball” - but they’ve lost a lot of their original strength.

I read a lot of Homestuck fanfiction this year, including fic I rediscovered, fic which are old favorites, and fic I read for the first time. I thought, since my previous fanfiction recommendation post got some interest, that I would provide a list of some standouts, excluding the ones mentioned in that post. Since There are so many I’ve read, I am limiting this to works that are both single and complete.
Fics which I have reread this year
California Dreaming (M) [JumpingJackFlash] Complete. Human AU set in Los Angeles. A romance between the stuffy roboticist Equius and unsuccessful actor Eridan Ampora.
the cure for anything is salt water (E) [Ghylle] Complete. A DirkJake fic, wherein Dirk is a Selkie, and Jake is the man who finds his skin.
The Fisher-Prince (M) [roachpatrol, urbanAnchorite] Complete, part of a larger series. A grimy/gritty fantasy AU which asks who Eridan Ampora is when seadwellers are at the bottom of the totem pole instead of the top?
Morning and Evening, Day and Night (T) [digimaniac33] Complete. A fic based on "Fisherman of the Inland Sea" by Ursula K. LeGuin. John and Jade are from a culture which has a four way marriage called a sedoretu, wherein each member is part of a pair, and each member is married to both members of the other pair. Dave and Rose join them in a sedoretu.
One of Our Submarines (T) [VastDerp] Complete as it's getting. Non SBURB AU. Sollux is helmsed, and discovers a community of other helmsmen messaging each other, coping with the horror of their situation. One of the big fanfics, you can see its influence in most fanon around helmsmen.
out on the new frontier (T) [orphan account] Complete. No SBURB shared universe AU. A post-SA hurt comfort thing where Dave helps out Cronus, a marginalized alien doing survival sex work on Earth
Second Best (T) [NoBrandHero] Complete. Postgame Earth. The Dave that survives the game isn't the main timeline Dave, it's Davesprite--but no one else knows just yet.
Tony Stark is not Willie Wonka... (M) [RainofLittleFishes] Complete as it's getting. A crossover with the MCU. Some of the Homestuck cast are transported to New York around the time of The Avengers. Having read exactly no MCU fanfics, I can't say for sure, but the fic has a very upbeat vibe that I associate with fandom tumblr posts from like 2013ish. I don't know, the lightheartedness was fascinating and somewhat endearing.
Within, Without (M) [reinkist] Complete. Meteorfic. A story of Dave and Karkat's developing relationship in the retcon timeline.
Young Dumb Things (T) [RainofLittleFishes] Complete. Non SBURB AU. Pitch pornstar Nepeta and robot technician Equius go pale for each other, and Karkat tries to set the two shy lovebirds together.
Fics which I have read for the first time this year:
401 (k) (M) [oncewewerezombies] Complete. No SBURB AU. A centuries-old Equius, grieving Nepeta's death, bonds with The Helmsman and plans a lovers' suicide with the one person the Condesce intends to keep alive. As you can imagine, it's a pretty heavy.
Astronomy in Reverse (T) [PunkZucchini, sicklekind] Complete. No SBURB shared universe AU. Dave and Karkat meet as penpals as teens. Now, Karkat is granted asylum on Earth, and now that he and Dave can meet in person, their mutual attraction develops into something more, while Dave weathers Bro's abuse until he, too, can flee his dangerous home.
chamomile, rose water, and other unlikely intoxicants (E) [callmearcturus] Complete. Fantasy AU. Dirk is the Year King, who is killed in sacrifice to bring the spring, but does not die. Jake is the Alchemist’s grandson, who sees the person beneath the bloody crown. But how can you love a sacrificial lamb?
Down by the Water (T) [spockandawe] Complete. A long, sad look at the life of the Handmaid, who keeps finding personal connections in the ancestors and keeps having to betray them to create the correct version of the timeline.
Faint (G) [TheMockingCrows] Complete. Rose Lalonde plays SBURB while coping with the chronic illnesses P.O.T.S. and Ehlers Danlos Syndrome.
The Four Kings, the God Thief, and the Black Diamond Pirates (E) [oxfordRoulette] Complete. Pirate AU longfic. The Beta kids are pirate gods, Dirk is the first mate on Vriska's pirate ship, and Jake is the mysterious cursed hottie from a faraway land whose appearance may hold the key to rescuing the vanished Jade and restoring her godly powers. (Note: this features illustrations and some interesting formatting best experienced on desktop)
Hold the Line (T) [dashery] Complete. Alpha universe Jade meets Alpha Dave Strider and Rose Lalonde. The first chapter makes you love them and the second makes you mourn.
Lee Shore (M) [JumpingJackFlash] Complete. Postgame Earth Dave/Eridan - This pairing looks like crack but I was rooting for them by the end. Very lovely and very gay.
my body feels young but my mind is very old (T) [oncewewerezombies] Complete. A short meteorfic featuring a pale interactions between Gamzee and Rose, who bond over crappy childhoods and substance abuse problems.
The Neon Bible (M) [tactfulGnostalgic] Complete. Shared universe AU. The Condesce occupies Earth, and hires Roxy Lalonde to be her Heiress Jane’s bodyguard. But soon, Roxy gets caught up in a rebel group and must juggle her loyalties between Jane and the freedom of humanity.
O+n the Care and Feeding o+f Wigglers (T) [CurlicueCal] Complete. How does a woman from a species with no nurturing instinct end up raising a giant ticklike larva? This fic has an answer.
drive it home with one headlight (E) [BlackHolesandUnicorns] (Edit: formerly this was mislabeled Virtual Reality by Rikudera. Whoops.) Complete. Dirk and Jake had a summer romance as teenagers, but their breakup had a massive effect on their following lives. Meeting again in a virtual reality world as old men, the pair finally confront each other and themselves.
What a Disaster (T) [Laurasauras] Complete. Human AU. A short humorous story where Karkat meets hot mess Vriska during court ordered community service and comes down with 'I can fix her' disease.
the wonder that's keeping the stars apart (M) [Laurasauras] Complete. An HSE/HS^2 fic centering on a revived John on the Theseus, interspersed with meditative bits of self reflection and a sadomasochistic back and forth between John and Dirk.
Some of these are extremely popular, others fairly obscure. One of these has a 100k+ word count, another is <2k. Some of these focus on romance, others on the various other aspects of the human experience. Some of these get dark and heavy, others stay light and some even get a bit schmaltzig. Enjoy!

I like to imagine that the limebloods were a pretty chill caste and a monument of a time where trolls were a peaceful race, evidenced by Lilith’s mostly-laid back and chill nature and Karkat’s affinity with befriending others and not being a violent guy at his core. Of course, after many years and when the Condesce came to rule, the peaceful, nature-oriented ways of the Limebloods became irrelevant in a more technological, violent world, and Condy, seeing no use for their caste (powers too chaotic and uncontrollable for helmsmen, defiant to her beliefs and rules) saw them as a nuisance. But since they left her alone, she figured they were too cowardly to fight back.
The Wretched/ Guardian Echosong was the antithesis of that belief, and proved it in a fight with Condy when she was made aware of there being a surviving limeblood on Alternia. Echo pretty much wiped the floor with Condy, and would’ve been down with ending her, but Signless’s beliefs, something Echosong didn’t share, and the unfortunate fact that Alternia had been back into a corner where it needed a ruler like her, she decided to spare Her Imperial Condescension. The peacefulness and empathy Condy looked down upon was what saved her from what would’ve been a pretty brutal death.
In the Limestuck timelines, the limeblood extermination began shortly before the Signless hatched and ended shortly after he began his journey, but never reached full-blown genocide until after he was killed due to a fear sown by Doc Scratch that they were planning the same thing. Echo survived the early attack on her colony long before Signless became well-known due to a curse cast by Apofis, as her unique abilities attracted his interest, and with some help from her mentor, who used the last of his powers to cast a protective shield over their shared hive. She grew up in the ruins of her colony, and left when she was eight sweeps old. She was only four sweeps old when she lost her friends and father figure, and over time, got to watch her kind slowly be killed, tortured and experimented on, all because of something that probably would’ve never happened.
On Beforus, pre-Scratch Lilith was like the matriarch of her caste, being old, if not older, than the Empress due to the immortality/healing factor old-age limebloods like herself had. When the coddling ways on the Empire resulted in some more-than-insulting accusations towards her caste and got a few killed, she had the limebloods abandon Beforus altogether and hide away. She was killed by some of the Empress’s followers after trying and failing to better negotiate terms with her.
Lilith stands as a testament to the previous “weakness” on her version of Alternia, something ol’ Condy would be all too happy to sweep under the rug if she ever found out that a limeblood still walked the planet. Meanwhile, Jacoba exists as a testament to the flaws of a utopia, but neither of them really care. They have simply run out of energy to do so.
Echosong was also a passive observer to the ancestors due to her fun immortality curse, and basically got to watch them all die. Most of the limebloods were simple watchers to Alternia’s shift into fascism and were like
Which brings me to the next idea I had in a 3 am brainrot fever: the theme of the Avysos. Every troll has some sort of motif (luck, duality, life, death, etc.) and the Avysos are no different. Their theme is Null/Nothing.
Hear me out.
Lilith and Jacoba used to be Heart players in their previous drafts, but over time I began to realize that I could not for the life of me figure out what Aspect or Class they fit into. They simply exist. They have no influence on Homestuck’s actual narrative during the events of their own story, making Aspects or classes worth nada, and Liminal Space exists in a place where those kinds of things don’t matter. So the Avysos, in a way, don’t really matter.
God that sounds mean.
I mean, they’re not canon, so they hold no power on the currently-existing story of Homestuck. They are neutral balancing points, blank slates, plain-as-dirt individuals who just want to vibe that have been swept up in a torrent bringing them to a relevance they never really wanted in the first place. Albeit with a different villain, but still.
This is funny to me because I imagine Lilith would adjust to Earth C the quickest, and the Beta trolls would take her place as monuments to their species’... unfortunate past.
