Another lonely morning greets you. The chirping of birds and the yellow haze of sunlight does little to warm your bed. You stretch your arm out, feeling the empty space beside you. You lift your hand and stare at the ring you forgot to take off, as you often do. Sometimes, you just don’t want to. Sometimes you think if you do, he’ll truly be gone.
Your husband isn’t gone though. Just absent. Just away on business. What's the difference?
You sit up and that knot under your shoulder pangs. You don’t sleep well without Loki near. Even after all this time, you’re not used to it. You wonder if he lays awake in his hotel beds.
You go to the bathroom and wake yourself up with a splash of cold water. The day unfolds slowly around you as the dregs of sleep recede to painful reality. Alone. Again. Just like every day. When you said til death do you part, you didn’t think it would be a walking death.
You wash and dress, for no reason in particular. You suppose because you should look human if you go outside. You sit and drink your tea in the kitchen as you watch the news on your phone. Current events only make you feel worse about the world. Even in your suburban paradise, there is no joy.
You close out the player and tap on your messages. The last text you got from your errant husband was two nights ago. He landed safely. He doesn’t respond unless you message first. You’re starting to forget the days when he would rush in the door and sweep you off your feet. There is only numbness left where once you tingled.
You’ll talk. Yeah, you’ll sit down and communicate and make it all better. Sure, that’ll happen. You laugh at yourself as you rinse the mug and leave it in the sink. You say that to yourself every time and then he comes home and it’s just silence.
This isn’t a home, it’s a prison. At least you get outdoors time here.
You step into your slippers and go outside, grabbing your gardening gloves as you tie on the tool belt with trowel, rake, and spade tucked in the pockets. You roll your shoulders and stretch, groaning as the dull jab remains under your shoulder blade. You need to stop reading in bed.
As you near the soil along the walk, you stop short. Dirt litters the pavement and petals scatter all around. You near fall to your knees, staggering instead as you grasp at your stomach. No, no, no.
You stare down at the ruin of your tulips. Not just any tulips but the pink and white ones you’d been nursing for weeks. The ones you bought yourself to mark your tenth year of marriage. The gift you never got from your husband because he couldn’t fit you into his calendar.
“Ugh!” You exclaim and stomp the broken stems. “I hate you!”
You stamp your feet in the dirt, spreading the mess, jumping up and down as your anger swells and your hurt flows over. That damn squirrel! That pest! That horrid creature!
You kick through the other flowers, crushing peonies and pansies and violets. You don’t care about any of it. It doesn’t matter. It all just wilts and dies. It’s all just a bunch of bullshit.
You clutch your head and collapse on your heels, sitting on your knees as you hang your head forward. It’s not the flowers. You know it’s not. The one thing you don’t want to think about is the only thing you can think about.
You stay like that, sobbing into the ruin of your front garden. How pathetic you must look in your old Gap tee shirt and oversized sweatpants. If any of those HOA cyborgs walked by, they’d surely give you a citation.
“Pardon,” a voice breaks through your tragedy and you close your eyes.
You’re delusional. You have to be imagining things. It sounds just like him. Like your Loki. You turn your head and open your eyes, lashes webbed with tears. You sniff and quickly mop them away. Of course it wouldn’t be your husband.
“Are you alright? I saw you fall from across the street,” the slim tall man stands on the other side of your iron gate. “Oh my, well, what a mess that chap made of your garden. I’m afraid he had a go at mine as well.”
You squint and shake your head, “who?”
“That squirrel fellow. He broke one of my planters as well,” he points with his long index finger. How peculiar. He reminds you of him. Tall, slim, and his nose...
“That’s... yeah,” you sniffle and look down, using your shirt, to wipe away what’s left of your grief.
“They must’ve meant very much. Even if they are just flowers, I can empathise,” he says.
You shrug, “I’m being dramatic.”
You stand and sweep off your pants. He lingers and you avoid looking at him. You’ve humiliated yourself enough.
“Tulips,” he remarks. “I’ve some lovely blue ones from Holland if you’d like some bulbs. Can never have too many.”
“That’s nice of you,” you keep your head down, turning your back to him, “who are you exactly?”
“Oh, yes, I suppose I’ve not made the rounds yet. I... do you perhaps know a Hattie?”
“Yeah, across the street,” you mutter.
“That would be her. My aunt,” he explains, “she’s in need of some assistance, she’s due for surgery, so I’ve volunteered myself as her minder. She always did make the nicest biscuits, I only think it fair.”
“That’s... nice,” you nearly choke on emotion. It is very sweet and selfishly, you feel worse for hearing it.
“Needless to say, I’m a bit of a stranger around here,” he continues, “I’m Jonathan, though, if you... care.”
You take a breath and lower your head, trying to get yourself together. You face him and try to force a smile but only feel like you might start crying again. You enunciate your name through the tension in your lips.
He repeats it and it nearly takes your breath away, “do I have that right?”
You have to hold back a gasp as you nod.
“Beautiful,” he remarks, “happy to have a name to the face. I hate to be trouble but you might see me around.”
“That's… That's okay. I'm sorry. I'm just… having a day,” you try to laugh out your distress but it only sounds fractured.
“We all do,” he says, “I might be so lucky you never catch me in one.”
“Sure, uh, I'll… I gotta go inside.”
“Of course,” he purrs, “I shall let you know if I do catch the menace.”
You put on a perplexed face.
“The squirrel,” he says, “I am merciful, never worry. I'll only give him a good fright.”
“Mm, thanks, er, I'll keep an eye out too.”
“I do hope your day turns for the better,” he dips his head slightly, “can't complain for the sun, can we?”
He turns and struts to the curb. You watch as he looks both ways then strolls on, hands in his pockets, a man without a care. You envy him that, but you can't quite place that other thorn in your chest.

Chapter 22
Thursday, December 5 Fifteenth week of the semester
Sometimes Joel couldn’t believe his luck. Not only had he convinced you to talk to him – and gotten past all of the mishaps, misunderstandings, and ridiculous interruptions – but you’d agreed to date him. To be his. Most days it had him walking just a bit taller, shoulders just a bit straighter. He looked like a man who loved his life, and he knew it. (He’d gotten more than his fair share of teasing for it, around his office and at home. And Tess was a menace.)
On this particular day, he was walking to your office to meet you and take you to lunch to celebrate finally reaching the last week of classes. He wondered if the people he walked past could feel the good mood radiating off of him, but shrugged. He was in a good mood, after all. Just last week you and Ellie had joined him and Sarah and Tommy for Thanksgiving in the afternoon, since Ellie’s mom had been at work, and it had gone better than he could have ever imagined. You just fit – in his house, in his life. Ellie and Sarah got along like a house on fire (which was a little worrying, to be honest – those two were going to get up to some mischief, he just knew it). As he’d watched you get into your car around dinner time, off to have a second meal with your sister, he couldn’t help imagining what it would be like if you didn’t have to go. If you didn’t have to leave his house in order to go home. If home was right there. With him.
He’d already started trying to calculate when he might be able to ask you to move in without scaring you off. (He’d decided on the end of spring semester. That was enough time right? Four months? Sure. Had to be.)
(If he could wait that long.)
As Joel entered your building, he felt himself start to smile, unable to stop it from taking over his face. Just because he was about to see you again. He was already looking forward to the weekend after next, when finals would be done and you would be done grading. When you would be all his.
He was about to turn the corner to head down the hall to your office when he realized he could hear your voice coming from the hallway, apparently talking to someone. He slowed, trying to figure out if it was a student and if he should wait out of sight for a moment. But then he realized how tense your voice sounded as you asked what the other person wanted. When they responded, Joel started to frown and crossed his arms, leaning up against the wall where neither of you could see him.
“Well, since it seems like you’ll be joining the course committee in the spring, I think we should meet to talk about it more.” Trevor’s voice was unpleasant, as always, but something in his tone made Joel frown even harder than usual. Even though he wanted to laugh, remembering how you’d told him Trevor had been taken off the committee, but didn’t know it yet. You were actually meant to be Trevor’s replacement.
“Trevor, I don’t think that’s nec–” Joel could almost picture you trying to keep yourself from rolling your eyes and this time, he did smile.
Trevor interrupted you. Of course. “No, it really is necessary. You could learn a lot from me, you know, I’ve been on the committee for two years.” Joel tried not to laugh at the absurdity of that suggestion.
“That’s ok, Trevor. I–”
He cut you off. Again. Joel frowned, listening carefully. “You know, you really do need to start pulling your weight around here. If you do want tenure. Some things are more important than teaching, you know. It’s nice and all that the students like you, but that’s not what really matters.” Trevor sounded so haughty as he said it that Joel’s hands clenched into fists without his conscious input.
“Trevor, I’ve already talked about everything with Claire, and she’s happy with me, so I don’t know what you mean by that.” Your tone had gone ice cold and it made Joel smirk, darkly approving. You tell him, baby.
Trevor cleared his throat and Joel knew he was probably squirming under your clear disregard. He could almost picture it. “Well. If you ask me, you need to learn more about the politics of surviving in this department and at this school. We really should set up a meeting. I know what’s really going on in this department, you know. If you want to be in-the-know.” It sounded like Trevor was clinging to his haughty tone with both hands, barely able to keep it up.
You sighed, loud enough for Joel to hear it from his hiding place. He smirked again. “Look, Trevor, I really am going to be too busy until after finals, and then it’s the break, I–”
He cut you off again and Joel shifted his weight, annoyed. “Well then we should meet at a different time. You know, it would probably be best to talk over dinner? I–” Joel heard the suggestion but not the rest of his sentence – there was a sudden roaring sound in his ears that took over and urged him forward around the corner before he even realized he was moving.
Turning the corner, he took in the situation: you, with your back to him, arms crossed in front of you as if to ward Trevor away. Your shoulders looked tense and he could tell even without seeing your face that you were desperate to escape this conversation.
Trevor, on the other hand, looked almost like he was aiming for predatory, but his demeanor couldn’t quite manage it. He was angled towards you and attempting some sort of one-handed lean against the wall to your left, staring you down. He didn’t look away as Joel came around the corner.
Joel noticed all of this without stopping his forward motion and kept walking until he was right behind you. He wrapped his right arm snugly around your waist as he stepped up next to you. He watched as your shoulders relaxed when he touched you and smirked, pressing a soft kiss to your temple.
“Hey, darlin’, you ready for lunch?” He interrupted whatever Trevor had been about to say without an ounce of regret.
Out of the corner of his eye Joel watched as Trevor suddenly stood up ramrod straight, eyes utterly disbelieving as he swiveled his gaze back and forth between the two of you.
“You– what– that’s not! I–” Trevor actually sputtered. It was very gratifying. Joel squeezed your waist and smiled, wide and disingenuous.
“Oh! Hello there, professor. Didn’t see you there.” The other man eyed him distrustfully, which Joel supposed was fair.
“Um–” Trevor started to reply, but you cut him off.
“Hi Joel, yes, let me just put my bag down.” You moved to finally step past Trevor towards your office, but suddenly the other man’s arm shot out in front of you, keeping you from leaving. He wasn’t touching you, but only because Joel had kept his grip on your hip and pulled you back a a step. You stared at Trevor quizzically, obviously surprised that he wasn’t letting you leave. “Trevor, what is it?”
“You can’t!” Trevor looked incensed, suddenly. “Um, you can’t date other employees?” He said it like a question, like he was scrambling for an excuse to keep you there.
Joel thought this sounded a bit rich from a man who’d been about to ask Joel’s girlfriend on a (very unwelcome) date. He was opening his mouth to say so when he heard Claire’s voice come from behind Trevor.
“Trevor, that’s not a rule.” She sounded exhausted and spoke with a cadence that made it clear this was a sentence she had said so many times it had its own specific rhythm. “I need to talk to you anyway, it’s convenient to find you here. Come with me to my office.”
She walked right past the three of you with a nod to you and Joel. Trevor gaped after her, mouth wide open.
“But! But she–” he sputtered, but Claire cut him off.
“Now, Trevor.” He scurried after her, head down, face red.
Joel turned to you and smiled. You looked shocked, and laughed incredulously as you watched Trevor round the corner.
“Am I imagining things, or was he about to ask me out? In like, the most condescending way possible?”
Joel started herding you towards your office with his hand on your lower back before he responded. “Pretty sure he was, yeah. Before I interrupted.”
“And thank god for that,” you scoffed. “Why on earth does he want to go out with me? He hates me!”
Joel smiled and shook his head. “Seems likely he thinks that’s flirting.”
The look of utter disgust on your face was very gratifying. Joel stood a little taller in satisfaction.
“Flirting?! He’s horrible to me, all the time. He just told me he thinks teaching isn’t important and was judging me for thinking it is! Just now!” You entered your office and threw yourself into one of your arm chairs. “God, he’s such a prick.”
Joel laughed. “Come on, honey, let’s get to lunch.” You rubbed your hands over your face, but nodded.
“I have to tell Beth about this,” you muttered as you stood and stretched. “She’ll never believe it.”
Joel let his hand come up to rest on your lower back again as you headed back down the hallway towards the doors at the front of the building, and he let himself feel smug when he felt the muscles in your back relax under his touch.
Joel (3:42 PM): You know that professor in her department that everybody hates?
Tess (3:45 PM): the British Lit Prick? yes. and yes everyone does hate him.
Joel (3:46 PM): He tried to ask her out today.
Tess (3:47 PM): 🤣and she turned him down, of course (3:47 PM): please tell me she was mean about it
Joel (3:48 PM): It didn’t even get that far, Claire interrupted. But she looked horrified. (3:49 PM): I walked up just in time to make it clear she was taken, anyway.
Tess (3:50 PM): as she should, he’s a horror (3:51 PM): damn. how big is your ego right now
Joel (3:52 PM): No idea what you mean.
Tess (3:54 PM): sure, Joel (3:55 PM): don’t run into any doors with that big head
Joel (3:57 PM): 🙄
Tess (3:58 PM): at least you can fix it afterwards if you do
Joel (4:00 PM): See if I help you with the crickets, next time.
Beth (4:17 PM): nice work with the showing off and being scary in front of Trevor
Joel (4:18 PM): Did she say that?
Beth (4:19 PM): she told me you walked up just in time to stake your claim
Joel (4:20 PM): Damn right I did.
Beth (4:21 PM): 😂well, good job (4:21 PM): wish I could have seen his face (4:22 PM): god that guy is such a prick. I did wonder if this was a gross flirting situation but I was afraid to make it real by saying it out loud
Joel (4:23 PM): He turned a very bright shade of red. (4:23 PM): Now that I know, it’s obvious. I’m surprised it took him so long. (4:24 PM): Apparently they hate him all the way over in the chemistry department.
Beth (4:25 PM): that is the least surprising thing I’ve heard today (4:26 PM): he used to go to the faculty senate meetings and act like his normal charming self. I’m sure at this point it’s everyone on campus
Joel (4:28 PM): I see how he earned his nickname.
Beth (4:29 PM): I might have heard a student use it the other day 👀
Joel (4:31 PM): If the students have it, it’s over. (4:32 PM): Bet it’ll end up on rate my professor and he’ll have a meltdown.
Beth (4:32 PM): it’s what he deserves
...
a/n: everyone hates Trevor 🤷🏻‍♀️ he may or may not be based on a real person 👀

“But you can protect me. Right, red?”
Jason wanted to tell you about everything, but you figured it out before he could. After a frightening encounter with the Red Hood, you learned that the big, unreadable guy who terrified you was the same one who held you and comforted you afterward.
Now, though, Jason knows that he was right from the beginning. Regardless of what Dick said or the fact that you stayed beside him after your life-changing realization, Jason shouldn’t have told you. Not because he doesn’t love or trust you but because he put you in danger. He failed to protect you from himself, Gotham, and the people who made him what he is.
“You didn’t protect me, red,” you whisper weakly.
“Hold on for me,” Jason begs.
Your blood coats his hands, and the light in your eyes dims before Jason wakes. Alone in his apartment, he pulls his legs up and drops his head heavily into his hands. It’s a new nightmare, but losing you forever hurts worse than watching you walk out of the door.
Jason looks at his phone beside him. His heart begs him to call you, to hear your voice and know without a doubt that you are okay, but his mind says no. He already put a target on your back and won’t bring you closer to the Red Hood than he has to.
Tumblr media
Your life hasn't changed much since you discovered Jason Todd is Red Hood. You haven’t talked to him about his vigilantism as you work through your questions alone. You continue inviting Jason into your life and home regardless of your questions or doubts. He told you the moment you first called him red that he would wait for you, and in the meantime, Jason would take what he could get. Neither of you want to lose each other, but the nagging questions in your mind – Why didn’t he tell me? What really happened when we were kids? – threaten to push you away from him.
As you walk home after a late night at work, questions about Jason, his “death,” and Red Hood fill your mind. You’re only drawn from your answerless wonderings by someone moving in the shadows. Gotham may be full of vigilantes, but it will never be safe.
You remove your phone from your pocket and press Jason’s contact, increasing your speed as it rings. The line connects nearly immediately.
“Hey,” Jason answers. “You okay?”
“Yeah. Just walking home. Don’t want another incident like last time.” You try to keep your voice steady, but it shakes when you turn and notice someone behind you. “Jay?”
“I’m here.”
“I think someone’s following me.”
“Where are you?”
His voice drops as if he’s speaking through the hood. You make another surprise turn, and the man behind you seems closer now.
“Red,” you whisper quickly.
“We’re on the way,” Jason promises. “Talk to me.”
“I’m sorry,” you admit. “I’m sorry for not talking to you, but I was scared.”
“I know.”
“Not of you.”
“I know.”
“He’s getting closer.”
“Breathe,” Jason demands. “Nothing is going to happen to you.”
“I trust you.”
As soon as you say it, Red Hood and Nightwing drop from a fire escape and land at your side. You feel safe standing between them, knowing who one is and suspecting the other. That doesn’t mean you throw caution aside, so you duck behind Jason’s shoulder.
“I got this,” Nightwing says quickly.
“Let’s go,” Jason tells you as he turns toward you. “Hold on.”
He wraps an arm around your waist, and your arms circle his shoulders. When he tightens his grip to pin you tightly against his chest, you nod. He raises a hand and fires a grappling hook over his head. You close your eyes against the wind over Gotham and squeeze them tightly until you feel solid ground beneath your feet.
“I got ya,” Jason murmurs.
You blink your eyes open slowly but only see Jason’s mask.
“Thank you,” you whisper.
The red hood before you nods once before he takes your hand to lead you to your apartment. It’s less than a block away, and as Jason enters your window, you know you’re ready to talk about everything.
“I have to go,” Jason says suddenly. “They-“
“Go,” you reply. You lay your hands on his shoulders and tilt your chin to kiss his mask. “I’ll be here when you’re done. If you want.”
“I’ll be back,” Jason promises.
He disappears out of your window but ensures it locks behind him before he jumps over the railing of your fire escape. You watch the window for a while after he leaves, and when you finally turn away to change out of your work clothes, you smile. You love Red Hood because of the man under the mask.
Tumblr media
Red Hood moves silently through Gotham, but Jason’s mind is on you. You kissed his mask, which solidifies his belief that you love him. You love Jason, so you accept Red Hood because of that love. The big, unreadable guy you ran from was your first call when you were in danger. Being in a position to help you today eliminates part of Jason’s memory of scaring you. Now that he has been seen with you and approached you as someone Red Hood cares about, a target is being drawn on your back. And it looks suspiciously like his mask.
Tumblr media
Three quick taps to your window draw your attention away from the news report about Batman. You turn off the television as you stand. The moment you raise the window, Jason climbs inside. He forces the window back down before he pulls his helmet off, and you smile at the sight of the domino mask underneath.
“Hello there,” you murmur as he peels the mask away from his eyes.
“Hey, pretty girl.”
You shake your head at Jason’s flirtation but step closer to him. He pulls you into a warm, comfortable hug, and you sigh as you relax against his chest.
“Thank you,” you say again as Jason leads you toward your couch.
“Dick did all the hard work,” Jason deflects, turning away from your attention.
“I knew it was Dick,” you whisper.
Jason sits back with an arm around your shoulders. You lean against him; you want to stay close and crave his comfort more than anything. Not because you’re scared but because you love him.
Your touch helps Jason, too, and he falls asleep on your couch. You could get used to this, welcoming him into your arms after he goes on patrol. Jason is important to you, and he deserves to know why you stepped back even after accepting his formerly violent counterpart. After kissing his forehead, you lie beside him and quickly fall asleep. No matter how good Jason thinks you are for him, he’s better for you.
Tumblr media
“What did you do?” you accuse.
“I did it to protect you!” Jason replies. “I love you.”
“This isn’t love.”
Jason steps toward you with his hands outstretched. The fear you showed when you first met the Red Hood returns as you flinch away from him.
“I’m not going to hurt you,” Jason promises. His voice breaks as he watches you step back.
“I wish I could believe you.”
Tumblr media
Jason thrashes beside you, and it’s impossible to ignore on the small couch. When he mumbles, “No, no. I’m sorry,” you move off the couch. Kneeling beside his head, you keep your hands away from him as you try to wake him.
“Jason,” you say. “Jay, baby.”
You lay your fingertips on his arm, and Jason wakes quickly. He grabs your wrist gently as his eyes meet yours.
“You’re still here,” Jason whispers.
“Of course. I’m not going anywhere, Jay,” you reply.
Jason sits up and pulls you against him. You move your knees to either side of his thighs to hold his head to your chest.
“It was just a dream,” you soothe.
You push your fingers through his hair as your heartbeat comforts Jason. His grip tightens on you as he pushes his head closer to you.
“I’ve had nightmares,” he begins quietly. “Since I came back to Gotham. You always left. You saw me for who I really am and then you left. But, last night… you died, and then today you flinched away from me like the first time. I can’t lose you.”
“You won’t,” you promise firmly. You pull back, keeping your hands on Jason’s cheek as you sit back to look at him. “I’m right here.”
“I was Robin. The second one, uh, after Dick. Bruce and I followed the Joker.” Jason pauses and takes a shaky breath.
“It’s okay,” you whisper as Jason quiets. “Take your time, Jay.”
“He killed me. Bruce let him kill me. And then, suddenly, I was back. But the Lazarus Pit, the thing that resurrected me, put this storm in my mind that never ended. All I wanted was revenge, but you were always in my mind. So, I came back and found you as soon as I could. Since then, every time I close my eyes, I dream about losing you… I can’t lose you, I won’t. That’s why when Dick told me to tell you, I said no. He said you loved me through worse, but- but I’m not the man you think I am.”
“Dick was right,” you interject. “I loved you through everything, Jay. Including your death. When I lost you, I lost a piece of myself. But you came back. You came back to me, Jay.”
“I shouldn’t have. That pit ruined me.”
“It didn’t.” Jason shakes his head, and you brush your thumbs over his cheeks as you repeat, “It didn’t. You’re still Jason. And I still love you.”
“I’m putting you in danger just by being near you.”
“And I’m not letting you leave. Not again.”
“What if I can never be the Jason I was before?”
“People change, no matter what. I love you, Jason, and you will always be my Jason Todd.”
“I can protect you from Gotham, from the Joker, all of it. But you- you’ve been protecting me from the storm in my mind since I came back.”
“And I always will. Whether I’m looking at this pretty face or the red mask,” you promise. “I stopped talking about it because I thought you were doubting me, you would have told me if you wanted me to know, but I found out on my own. Whatever I thought was wrong, I know that. All that matters right now is that I love you, Jason.”
“I love you more,” he replies.
You smile and lean forward to meet Jason halfway. Kissing him is safe and makes you feel loved. Now that you know everything (including Batman’s secret identity), you will never doubt why Jason kept secrets from you when he returned. You love Jason Todd, the man under the mask, and every part of him.

The morning sun shone through your bedroom window, causing you to stir in bed. Slowly lifting your head, you grumbled, noticing that your boyfriend was nowhere to be found. Your fingers sped across the bed, feeling his lingering warmth, which meant he wasn’t far away. Letting the sheet fall from your bare body, you grabbed his shirt from the ground, slipping it on along with a clean pair of his boxers.
As you snapped the band over your hips, you heard a crash from the kitchen, followed by a curse and the smell of something burning. Hurrying out, you walked into a slightly smokey kitchen, finding Choso with his back turned to you. One hand held the handle of his frying pan while the other tried scrapping at something in the pan with a spatula.
You said nothing, joining his side as you peered into the pan. Inside was, well, something? It was lumpy, charred, and full of blueberries.
“Cho?”
“Yeah?” The spatula aggressively smacked and prodded at the substance in the pan.
“What are you doing?”
“I was trying to make pancakes.” Your boyfriend winced as the ‘pancake’ bubbled a mysterious smokey bubble. “But well, it uh—” this time the substance hissed, “it didn’t exactly go as planned? I’m pretty sure I’ve failed at making food, yet succeeded in making a cursed spirit out of pancake mix.”
You glanced at the bag full of blueberries and the bowl of batter he’d made. You’d told him how much you wanted blueberry pancakes the previous night. You felt like he reached into your chest and squeezed your heart. He was too flipping cute! So cute, you reached up gently, biting his cheek.
Choso sighed softly, allowing you to nibble at his cheek with a gentle smile. “I suppose you eating my cheek would be more suitable instead of,” the lumpy concoction hissed again, “well, this.” It bubbled more until you stepped in, removing the pan from the heat.
“No worries, we got this.” You scraped the hissing smoking substance into the sink before wiping the pan out. “Let’s see.” You eyes his batter. “All it needs is a little TLC.”
Choso helped you fix the batter, adding more water, sugar, and vanilla to the lumpy substance. Once you deemed it suitable, you sprayed the pan with non-stick spray, poured in the batter, and handed some blueberries to Choso. He patiently waited until tiny bubbles formed at the top before he added them in, making the cutest little smiley face.
“And now we flip!” Choso watched in awe as you flipped the pancake over with a flick.
Choso’s eyes glittered with childlike excitement. “Amazing!” His eyes watched as you lipped the pancake again.
“Yeah?” His warm eyes were focused solely on you. “I should put pancake flipping on my resume.”
Choso shook his head, stepping behind you, his arms snaking around your waist. “I wasn't talking about the pancake flipping.” His lips gently pressed against your cheek. “I was talking about you.” Tuck your face felt like it was on fire at Choso’s words.
“I think you're pretty amazing yourself, Cho.”
“Even though I made a cursed spirit out of pancake batter and blueberries?”
“Especially because of that.”
That was god's honest truth, and Choso knew it too. He smiled wide before leaning in and biting your cheek, winning your giggle. In the warm rays of light that morning, you and Choso stood in the kitchen, flipping pancakes with your lover's arms wrapped around you—one of the best mornings of your entire life.

Down Bad ♡‧ Charles Leclerc
A/N: Hi again! I was inspired by the Florida Logan blurb and decided to write a Charles one after listening to down bad. It’s a little longer than the previous blurb but I hope you enjoy reading it!
The combination of the bright sun warming your shoulders, the sights, and the people made you smile as you walked around Monte Carlo. Landing a work opportunity here was feeling like a great idea, you truly couldn’t be happier. A camera was around your neck and you took pictures of everything that caught your attention. Instead of continuing to unpack you had decided to take a break and do some sightseeing before getting some food. Totally in awe of the sights you were not fully aware of your surroundings. As you headed towards the casino you bumped into someone. The person steadied you and you let out a light laugh. “Je suis désolé” the voice replied as the person apologized in French, “Moi aussi” you replied. “I should’ve been aware, my apologies” you added switching to English. The person you bumped into laughed and your eyes met his green eyes. “Are you okay?” He asked while still keeping a hand behind your back in case he needed to steady you. “Mhm,” you hummed.
“I’m Charles, Enchanté,” he said, extending his hand, stating your name you replied like he had. “What brings you to Monaco?” He asked. “Work, I just moved here actually!” You exclaimed with a little laugh. He smiled, “What do you work in?” Charles asked. “Brand marketing,” you replied. “How about you?” you inquired, “I drive race cars,” he said with a smile. Of course, you knew who he was, you were a fan but you had to downplay this. Turning your head to the side a little you looked at him and smiled, “I think I’ve seen you” you replied and he smiled. “Are you doing something right now?” He asked, scratching the back of his neck, “Besides walking around and trying to find a spot to eat, no not much” you said with a laugh. Charles laughed and beckoned you to follow him. Obliging you walked next to him as he pointed out some sights and cracked a few jokes.
He led you to his car, which as you knew would be a Ferrari, and opened the door for you, thanking him you got in. Before starting the engine he informed you of a really good spot he frequently ate at and took you there. The drive wasn’t long but very agreeable since you conversed the entire time.
Upon entering the cafe you smiled, it seemed like it was very tranquil and did not have a flock of tourists, few tables inside were occupied, Charles was seemingly familiar with the place so he led you to one of the tables out by the balcony and pulled the chair out for you. While waiting for the waitress you kept talking and looking at your surroundings. Charles had stopped talking and admired you for a minute, your head was a little turned to the side, and your line of sight was trained on the faraway horizon. A stray curl fell off your low bun and he fought the urge to reach out and twist the coil around his finger.
Suddenly self-conscious he stopped staring at you, and just then you turned to look at him with a smile so bright that it could start a thousand fires. God, you were gorgeous and you looked at him as if you sensed that he had been taking you in. Just then, the waitress came and you ordered.
Carefully you would sneak in glances at Charles, his hair was a little messy at the top but cut short at the sides, and his skin was tanned making the silver chain around his neck stand out in perfect contrast. He was attractive there was no denying that, but when he laughed and his eyes crinkled you saw a boyish charm to him and butterflies would flutter around your stomach.
Time had inevitably passed and neither of you had noticed, eventually you paid the check, something he insisted he take care of and he drove you home. “You can drop me off here at the entrance, it’s fine,” you said. Shaking his head he replied, “Non, I’d like to make sure you make it to your floor okay. I’m coming with you” he said. “In case the elevator gets stuck?” you asked with a laugh. He laughed, “Exactly, then you’ll be stuck with me and not alone,” he replied. Giggling you both exited the car and he accompanied you to your floor. Stopping at your door you unlocked your door and invited him in but he politely declined. “I had fun today, thank you for showing me around!” you happily said. “It was my pleasure.” “Would you like to intentionally go out someday, without bumping into each other on the street?” he asked. Smiling you nodded, “That would be great,” you replied grinning. Charles’s face lit up with a grin, and he exchanged numbers with you. Bidding goodbye to you you smiled and waved before closing the door with a smile on your face.
A few days had passed since your first encounter with Charles, and you were finally settled into your apartment. On your way home from work, you received a text and noticed that it was Charles asking if you were free that evening. Smiling you replied and soon enough he was asking you out, intentionally just as he’d promised to. Making the short walk home you stepped into the hallway as soon as the elevator doors opened and wasted no time in getting inside your apartment to get ready, While getting ready you realized you were down bad for him.

𝘔𝘶𝘴𝘩𝘺 𝘔𝘢𝘺 𝘋𝘢𝘺 𝘛𝘦𝘯: 𝘘𝘶𝘪𝘦𝘵 𝘕𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘴
Rating: G Pairing: Mountain/Aether with brief appearances by Dew and Rain. Words: 750ish Using this one as an excuse to talk about the abbey library (since I wrote this while at the library it seems fitting). Mushy May brought to you by @forlorn-crows Divider by @ghuleh-recs
Tumblr media
Aether loves the library after dark. When it’s been deserted by the day staff. Lights turned low. Doors left closed, but unlocked. He lets himself in after long shifts at the infirmary and wanders the stacks. It’s a way to decompress. Not that there is that much stress at the infirmary these days. Mostly he deals with colds, flus, sprains, stitches, the occasional baby. There was a time when trauma seemed to live in those walls. Where he would go in knowing he’d come home bloody.
But lately, things have calmed down. Evened out. He likes it. He likes the abbey quiet and stable. He knows it won’t last forever–can’t. That something will happen, another power shift, and the whole place will turn itself upside down again.
He’ll haunt the library then too.
He walks the whole library before he even thinks about a book. Weaving in between the tall shelves. Climbing the narrow stairs to the fiction section, lofted above stacks and stacks and stacks of history texts and dusty books about summonings.
He looks down over the library, it’s dark wood, and vaulted ceilings, and plush victorian era couches. He turns and plunges deeper into the stacks. Dragging his fingers over the spines of new fantasy books preferred by Rain, and the romances Cumulus and Sunshine read voraciously. He browses Dew’s horror section–in case there’s something new he should bring home to the fire ghoul. Glances at the young adult section that Aurora has devoured since she got here.
He snags a historical fiction for himself, and presses onward into the darkness. There’s a nook, Dew found it years ago, tucked away behind this section. A set of winding stairs hidden behind a wall panel. Aether touches two fingers to the section of wall and it clicks, and pops out, swinging on invisible hinges.
He steps into the stairwell and tugs it closed behind him. There’s light coming from above. The faint glow of the fairy lights he and Cirrus hung right after Dew found this spot. He follows that glow up the steep stairs and emerges into a small comfortable room. More of an attic than anything else–but transformed into something cozy. There’s a big window in the gable, flooding the room with moonlight. It’s warm and quiet, and not empty.
Mountain’s seated on one of the many floor pillows. A blanket curled up around his shoulders, back to the wall, horns just barely brushing the peaked ceiling. He’s fully absorbed in a book that Aether recognizes as one of Rain’s favorites. Not a usual pick for the earth ghoul.
Mountain looks up at him as Aether gets closer. He smiles, it’s warm and sleepy. He pats the pillow next to him.
“Did you just get off work?”
Aether nods, dropping down next to Mountain. Shifting so their thighs touch from hip to knee.
“What are you doing up?” Aether leans his head into Mountain’s shoulder. Mountain reaches up and scratches his fingers through Aether’s hair. Soothing fingers rubbing soft circles above his ear.
“Didn’t realize what time it was–got caught up.”
“Thought you didn’t like fiction.”
Mountain huffs out a little laugh. “Yeah, guess I was wrong. Rain has good taste.”
“He does,” Aether agrees. Settling in, he grabs a blanket of his own and opens his book. One he’s been meaning to read for a while.  “You hanging out for a while?”
Aether doesn’t mind being here alone, but sometimes–especially tonight–the company sounds nice. Mountain’s ground presence sets him at ease like nothing else, he wants to drown in it.
Mountain nods. “Got 100 pages left–I need to finish it. And then there’s the sequel.” Mountain holds up another thick paperback.
Aether smiles, he leans his head a little deeper into Mountain’s shoulder and cracks his book. They fall into companionable silence, soft breathing turning into subtle purrs as the night wears on and the moon sets.
In the morning, when Dew comes looking for them–he finds them curled up together. Books drooping from their hands. Covered in the same blanket, heads tilted together. The room filled with soft snores.  He takes a picture before he retreats. Sending it to Rain who’s out searching the greenhouse for signs of Mountain.
Found them he sends with the picture.
Adorable Rain responds seconds later.
Dew smiles at the sleeping ghouls in front of them, then turns away. He pads quietly down the stairs and closes the door softly behind him, and goes to finish making breakfast. They’ll emerge when they’re ready–but until then, Dew is more than happy to let them rest–they deserve it.

Have you, perchance, considered regressed Alpha? Reliant on Omega, clinging to his side because he's the only ghoul that makes him feel safe?
Oh I love this idea, have baby Alpha with Cg Omega and mentions of other ghouls!!
Cw/tw? Baby Alpha (0-2), mentions of bottle feeding, the nickname "daddy" used in a nonsexual way!
Alpha, when he does regress, he's usually very small with a baby-like mindset. Omega always notices before Alpha does, the way he stands and talks is a tell tale sign that he's slipping, which usually shoves Omega into a caregiver mindset.
When he does regress he usually can't walk, so Omega carries him everywhere with little effort. Alpha loves it and is always hanging onto him in some sort of way, not that Omega minds at all since he loves to carry his baby everywhere with him.
Alpha has a onesie that has little campfires all around it, Omega got it for him as a gift and Alpha adores it. He has others to wear but this one is special to him, since Omega got it for him with his own money.
Alpha usually doesn't like to be around others when he's small but sometimes he'll let Mist or Ifrit around him if Omega is busy, Mist always loves babysitting the small flame and is constantly playing games and sneaking snacks to him when Ifrit isn't looking.
If Mist and Ifrit are busy Omega will take Alpha with him to his office where he'll sit and play with toys and blocks while Omega works, there's a designated play area for any little who wants to hang out with him while working.
Sometimes Alpha will get fussy and cranky and Omega will have to calm him down and rock him in place to soothe him. "Daddy's here, little flame. I got you, we'll watch a movie after I'm finished working." And that calms him right down, Omega loves how well behaved he is sometimes.
Omega loves to spoil Alpha a lot, usually buying toys or little gear for the small ghoul. His most recent item was a custom bottle that Omega had ordered, he won't use any other when feeding but Omega doesn't mind at all.
On the topic of feeding, Alpha gets cranky if he's hungry and tends to throw a fit if he wants something. Omega will have him cradled in his arms and stay there with the bottle until the fire ghoul is finished, always making sure to burp him afterwards so he doesn't get an upset tummy that night.
When it's time for bed the little one is always changed into a soft onesie with his favorite stuffed animal and a pacifier, cuddling away on Omega's chest until the two of them fall fast asleep wrapped in each other's arms.

In fairness, Wren, Miraak can’t be blasted by fire and be mostly fine like you can… also it hits like 40 degrees Fahrenheit and he starts sweating

I love my job so much I want to cry. I have personal, unique relationships with 40 dogs and their owners and they give my life so much joy and meaning. Tonight we opened the bar officially and the social club at the facility and it means so much to me. I'm so happy. I'm so proud of the work I do.
