74. Kisses Where One Person Is Sitting In The Other’s Lap for Mason/your Detective (I have a goldfish memory, I can’t remember his name sorry).

Pairing: Mason/M!Detective Word Count: 1559 Summary: Literally just self-indulgent nonsense. A chubby detective with anxiety being loved on by our favorite grumpy vampire. Yeehaw.

I know this was originally intended for Chase, but I got inspired to write Juni instead, because I thought it would be cute, and I’m in the mood for cute lately. Mild CW for allusions to body image issues.

Mason perks up the second the Warehouse's hidden door slides open with its distinctive rumble. They all do, really, attuned to the sound at this point. Adam, of course, for "security reasons." Nate and Felix because they both love visitors, especially since they only ever have two.

Mason smells Juniper coming. He smells like outside, crisp cold air and fallen leaves, and the weird air freshener in his car that makes it smell like a goddamned bakery. His soft lavender laundry detergent, the spiced tea lattes he drinks to stay alert because he claims coffee makes his chest hurt-- he did drink it once that Mason recalls, because the new barista mixed up his order and he was too polite (read: anxious) to correct her. It made his heart beat hummingbird fast, and it took Mason snatching the cup and dumping it for him to stop drinking something that was hurting him out of some misplaced sense of propriety.

He shakes off the thought and sprawls himself more languidly across the chair, slinging one leg over the arm and looking towards the door from underneath a curtain of loose, dark hair.

Felix, sitting on the sofa across from him playing with some old handheld gaming console Juni's let him borrow, looks up and snickers. "You're so obvious."

Mason stretches out to kick his knee before hurriedly retaking his position.

"Juni!" Nate says cheerily when the human comes puttering in the door, windswept and chilly. "Welcome!"

Juni always seems startled by that enthusiasm, but pleased nonetheless, and he beams. "Hey! No missions today?"

Adam, tucked as close to Nate's side as he can be without being on top of him, grunts his annoyance, but otherwise keeps his focus on his book.

"I'm afraid not," Nate tasks, nudging Adam in the side reproachfully. "Which is why this one is so grumpy."

Felix chokes a little laugh at the choice of word, and Adam glares at Nate, who smiles glibly back. God, they've been sickening lately. Another thing to blame Juni for.

"I just got my sixth gym badge!" Felix crows while Juni is taking off his coat and scarf and tossing them over a chair. He hasn't even looked at Mason yet, and he’s trying not to be annoyed by that.

He smiles, freckled nose scrunching. "Oh, awesome! That means you can use Fly now!" Underneath his jacket, he's wearing a shapeless, dark sweatshirt that shrouds his body completely. Mason clicks his tongue, and that finally gets the detective’s attention.

His soft eyes drift to the chair, and his mouth quirks in that way that means he's about to get sassy, even if his ears are going pink and Mason can hear his pulse quicken. He smirks.

"Oh, and what's the problem now?" Juni asks loftily.

"No problem," Mason drawls, stretching his arms over his head so the bottom of his shirt rides up. Predictably, Juni's eyes flick down, breath hitching. Got him.

"His problem is you're not paying enough attention to him," Felix scoffs with a hearty eye-roll. "He posed himself all pinup for you, and you care more about Pokeymans than about poking him."

Mason growls, and Juni squawks out a sharp, involuntary laugh that shouldn't be nearly as charming as it is. He claps both hands over his mouth to stifle it, and, as if to apologize, he inches his way over to the chair and nudges at Mason's knee with his hip. He does try to keep his expression neutral when he pulls his hands away, biting his plush bottom lip, the corners of his eyes crinkled with the effort of not smiling. In retaliation, Mason snakes a few fingers into his waistband and tugs sharply, which is enough to overbalance him and send him sprawling. He flails a bit, and Mason wraps an arm around his waist to hold him still, but his body stays tense and he braces one hand on the arm of the chair, keeping his weight from falling onto the vampire completely.

"Wait, don't!" he blurts, pushing himself up a bit. His cheeks are bright red, eyes wide. Mason raises his eyebrows. "I don't want to squish you!"

"You won't," Mason says with a shrug, tugging again now that he knows it's not an issue of Juni not wanting to be close.

"Mason," he protests, "I'm like twice as wide as you are! You're all… lanky!"

Felix snickers. Mason ignores it.

Juni's getting fidgety, looking away and shifting like he’s trying hard not to squirm. Mason pushes his glasses back up his nose for him, and he mutters a quick thanks, but still won't look at him, and he's still bracing his weight so he won't fall across Mason's body.

Mason scoffs and stands up. The sudden motion dislodges Juni entirely, and would send him toppling to the floor if Mason didn't scoop him up and lift him like a sack of potatoes. Juni yelps anyway, which makes the vampire roll his eyes.

Adam and Nate are looking at them both, Adam entirely unamused, and Nate smiling with that usual fond indulgence he gets when any of them are acting up. Felix is cackling now, his game forgotten. Juni is covering his face with both hands, until he finally peeks between his fingers and notices that Mason is holding him effortlessly, no sign of strain, no shortness of breath, no trembling.

"Christ," he breathes, and the heat radiating off him makes Mason smirk.

"Do you believe me now?" he sighs, making an effort to sound as annoyed as possible.

"Um, yeah," the detective squeaks.

"Great." Mason flops back down, and Juni makes another sharp, startled sound, but doesn't try to escape. It takes him a bit, but he does relax slowly, settling against Mason's chest and draping his legs over the arm of the chair. He still seems shocked, a little antsy, as if Mason's going to start wheezing out of nowhere, but he doesn't protest.

Mason pinches his hip, making him jump. “Hey,” he murmurs, nosing his way into the soft, autumn-scented curls hanging over Juni’s face. “Relax. I may be lanky, but I’m stronger than I look. You weigh practically nothing to me.” He wraps an arm around the human’s waist and squeezes, using the coverage provided by his hair to nip playfully at his ear. That gets the blood rushing, and he squirms some more, but this time it’s less about his worries and more about the heat between the two of them. “And you’re so soft,” he purrs, slipping one hand underneath his sweatshirt to find bare skin. Juni wriggles some more, and it just makes Mason chuckle. “Keep doing that and we’re gonna have a bigger problem than you being all shy.”

He freezes, practically vibrating, and the heat radiating off him is delicious. Unfortunately, he can’t enjoy it long, because Felix has been distracted from his game long enough to decide they’re his entertainment now. He leans over the arm of the sofa, elbows braced and chin in his hands, making kissy faces at the two of them.

“You’re both so cute, it almost makes me not feel bad about being such a fifth wheel.” He glances back over his shoulder when Adam makes a disgruntled noise at the comment, but Nate just laughs and mumbles something about whatever they’re reading to distract him.

“You could always leave,” Mason growls back, while Juni hides in his neck and tries to pretend he’s not laughing.

“Nah,” Felix laughs, kicking his feet gleefully in the air. “It’s funny watching you get all annoyed. You want to be all cute and schmoopy, but you can’t when everyone’s around. Newsflash, Grumpypants, you’re being so stinkin’ cute right now. Cuddling and whatnot.”

Mason shifts with the urge to stand up and put the brat in a headlock, but freezes the second he realizes that would dislodge Juni. Juni, who is warm, and soft, and--

“Fuck,” he mutters. He glares at Felix, who looks entirely too smug, thinking he’s won. Mason’s going to have to get him back later, but for now, he’s got a human in his lap that is quietly radiating happiness, and when Mason returns his attention where it ought to be, he’s pleasantly surprised by a soft peck catching his lips, quick and sweet. It leaves him blinking, blindsided, and Felix starts snickering again, but he can’t even be bothered to be upset.

Juni doesn’t initiate kisses often, and warmth blooms deep in his gut at the unexpected, easy intimacy of such a small gesture. It doesn’t help that Juni is smirking. It's weak, still edged with his usual shy “is-this-okay” worry, but when he chuckles, “Good boy,” teasingly, Mason’s done for.

You’ve fucking ruined me, he almost says aloud, but stifles it at the last second by returning the favor and snagging the detective by the chin, kissing him with a little more force, more intensity. Juni melts instantly, going boneless and pliant, and Mason can’t even be annoyed by the slightly chilly fingers curling around the back of his neck with the pride pulsing through him.

And, while the detective is nicely distracted, Mason snags a throw pillow and chucks it blindly at Felix, and, judging by the sharp yelp that follows, it strikes true.

The victory is almost as sweet as the mouth against his.

(In this fic, if a third gen grows stronger it changes the eyes.(In the show the fifth pillar had her eyes changed when she got her ignition abilities, but I wanted to twist it) Other than that I have little idea of how the eyes change)

In this moment you regretted asking your friend for training.

You had trained with him every day for the past four days, he was to help you strengthen your abilities so you could become a better third generation before sending you back to your company, the eighth.

What he was doing was annoying you and pissing you off. You would have hated him if he acted like this the whole time, outside of training he was sweet and funny, but damn, he could be tough. Sure you like it but it was almost the end of your training for the day, couldn't he see you were nearing your limit? Maybe you’re holding it together better than you thought.

Which was confirmed when the next words left his mouth “I know you can do better. I saw you do better yesterday in fact” his voice sent anger throughout your veins, you took a deep breath and closed your eyes for just a second, grounding yourself so you don't lash out at the annoying, ridiculous, strange, interesting handsome, sexy.... You grit your teeth and your eyes fly open, cutting off your thoughts as you tried to use your flames again. Come on, you think, i can push myself, just a little more

He was about to speak but you heard his mouth shut as you moved your arms out in front of you, feeling the flame in your veins travel down the inside of your arm and around your wrist, flowing down each finger to the tip before swirling down and pooling in your palms. You tighten the circle of bright warmth, growing smaller and smaller, until you begin to make your own version of a sun wheel. You twist your hands, the fire staying in the air as you make a circle, when you connect the ends together it erupts into tiny explosions of stars that twist around each other.

He'd be lying if he said he wasn’t impressed with this display. He watched as you sent your attack forward, the strongest he’s witnessed from you. “Now do it again” he says and you turn to speak your mind but he takes one look at your face and hops down from the porch and quickly comes toward you, causing you to take a step back and tense your stance

“your eyes have changed. You are getting stronger” you can't look away from his eyes even if you wanted to, the anger you had felt for him had dissipated with his proximity. “What do you mean? What do they look like?” he points to your left “that one, is like mine, an X, except green. Your other is green with a pink heart” you hum softly, your cheeks flushing under his intense gaze, he leans down and your breath hitches, until he whispers “now do it again”

you feel your annoyance and your anger boil in your veins again as you huff, turning towards the training ground. You gather all your annoyance and anger, the last energy you had, sending it all to your palms as you feel the familiar swirl of flame and as you make your circle. Your hands shake, your breathing hard pants as the oxygen doesn’t come. You feel your flames sputter and when your circle connects the ends,, the stars that erupt fly back at your fingertips making you scream out as the flame turns to smoke.

You cradle your hands to your chest as he appears next to you “let me see” he commands, his voice strained with worry. You slowly hold out your hands, the tips of your fingers smoking and the skin singed in a few places on almost every finger. “Come with me” he says through his teeth and you can’t tell if he is mad at you. You nod and follow him into the guard house, your fingers leaving smoke behind you with every step, chewing your lip in worry.

He takes you into the medical room and gestures for you to kneel with him. He holds out his hand and you sigh as you hold them out in front of you, the sunlight through the window hitting them and illuminating the several black dots that are still smoking.

He doesn’t say anything while he cleans up your hands, his eyebrows furrowed. “I’m sorry” you whisper “I messed up” he shakes his head to the side once but doesn’t speak until he’s done bandaging your hands. The only sound being your hiss of breath every time his gentle fingers brush a healing ointment over your wounds or the touch of bandages.

“You’ll be okay, just overheated and you should heal up fine.” His voice is gruff and he won’t look you in the eye “I'm so sorry. I pushed you too hard. I didn’t mean for you to get hurt. I should have known. I should have seen the signs. I can’t believe I made you hurt your beautiful hands. I’m so sorry” his voice cracks in the last word and you reach out, but he stands quickly and leaves you in the middle of the room.

A few hours later you try to catch his eye during dinner but he avoids you, talking to Konro beside him and not even facing your direction. You give up trying to talk to him and fill your glass with wine, downing it and then grabbing the bottle and leaving the table quietly. Your heart is too sad to even stay there, trying to talk to the man you had started to get feelings for but having him avoid you was terrible, it felt like it was your heart he was cutting up on his plate.

“What are you doing Waka?” Konro asks with a sigh, watching you leave the room with the bottle clutched to your chest, your hands not touching it all. “What do you mean?” he asks and takes a bite, hoping the food will sate some of the acid currently burning his stomach. “I mean, you’re avoiding her, and she's been trying to get you to look at her all evening. What did you do and why are you avoiding her?”

Benimaru sighs, looking around the nearly empty room before turning towards Konro “I pushed her too hard. She hurt herself. It was my fault and I can't seem to bear looking at her knowing I am the one who hurt her” Konro furrows his eyebrows “have you asked her how she feels? Have you talked to her at all? ” Benimaru looks at his hands “I uh..“ Konro nods “Waka, stop acting like a child. She’s a grown woman, treat her like one.” his eyes widen before he stands and leaves the table. Konro was right, he was acting like a child, he needed to treat you like the strong woman he knows you are, and be the man he is and talk to you.

You find your way back to the medical room, grabbing some more bandages and then making your way up to the roof. You sigh as you sit at the edge of the roof, dangling your feet over the edge. You unwrap your hands, the semi-dirty bandages unraveling from your fingers, and wince when the cool air touches your burns. Pulling out the roll of gauze you start to redress your fingers, but they shake too much to do it properly.

“Damn” you whisper as the gauze falls from your fingers for the upteenth time, this time falling from the roof all together. Your fingers just didn't want to cooperate with you, so you sighed again, the heaviness in your heart growing as you turn your attention to the sky, the moon full and bright; unlike your heart.

“You dropped something” you laugh in jest “I've dropped a lot of things recently Waka, the ball, my goddamn heart, that one wasn’t on purpose though. Kinda blindsided me actually” you ramble, taking a drink from the bottle as he sits next to you, your hand throbbing against the cool glass.

He takes the bottle from you and takes a drink before setting it farther behind him so it wont roll off the roof. He holds his hand out towards you and you sigh before shoving your wrist against his palm, your fingers shaking as you avoid his eye contact.

“I meant the gauze” he says and you chuckle dryly, a embarrassed about your outburst as you mutter “oops.” His hands shake slightly as he wraps your fingers, but they were as gentle as they were before. The cover of the bandages feels better against your burns, no exposed sensitive skin. He brings your hand to his lips, pressing a kiss to your palm that sobers you up (you had like 2 glasses so you wouldn't even be drunk or even too buzzed by now, a long time has gone by and you ate a big dinner) he places your hand down against his thigh and holds out his hand for your other, which you place much gentler against his palm this time.

When he finishes he places another soft kiss to your fingers and you move your hand up to his cheek tilting his face up so he looks you in the eye “Benimaru. I don’t blame you. Sure you did push me, but I was too angry, I should have realized I went too far already. You know I like a little tough love to push me so I get stronger” You watch the corners of his mouth twitch into an almost smile as his eyes flick between both of yours

“Thank you,” you whispered, your hand still resting against his cheek, your bandages tickling his skin “thank you for patching me up. For taking care of me still.” you close your eyes and lean your head against his shoulder “Please don't avoid me anymore” your voice was sad and it made his heart crack. He stares into the sky for a few seconds, putting his thoughts in order, before he reaches out, one hand around your waist and the other on the back of your head as he pulls you up into his embrace and moves you both a little farther from the edge of the roof.

“Don’t go back to the eighth. Stay in the seventh.” he whispers, “I want you to stay” his cheek was against the top of your head as he held you gently to his chest,. “What.. like just as a subordinate who works with you?” He chuckles and it shakes you gently, “no, not just a subordinate.I dont usually hold my subordinates like this and I don't gain feelings for them. You have never been a subordinate to me. You’re intriguing to me. Captivating.” your heart beats races, your cheeks feeling warm as your spine tingles excitedly.

“I’m sorry for avoiding you. Konro talked some sense into me. I need you to know that I really adore you. I don’t want you to leave. I have been dreading the end of this week” you pull back and kiss his cheek softly before you part from his embrace so you could look in his eyes “I’ve been dreading leaving you.” your voice was as quiet as his, the only one listening was the moon and stars above, “You’re strong, you have a good heart, and when you’re not pushing me with training,” you smile when he chuckles “you make me laugh, and you make me happy” your cheeks are flushed from your expressions of feelings and from his soft gaze. “Can I stay with you?”

He leans forward, kissing the blush on both of your cheeks. “Please” he says, his voice sending tingles down your spine before his lips connect with yours for the first time. Your eyes flutter closed as his soft lips touch yours, stars bursting behind your eyelids as your hands rest against his neck. When he pulls back the cool air sends a shiver down your spine and he smiles “we should go inside, it’s getting late and cold.” He runs his fingers softly through your hair “Plus we should talk to Obi tomorrow since you’re going to stay”

“Sorry, my friends and I planned to meet up.”

“Not today, sweetie. I’m taking some extra time with the team. I’ll be back soon.”

“I’m at kenma’s house. Wont be back till late.”

Every line followed by a chaste kiss to your forehead and a wave of goodbye while you stood there, eyes cast down with a meek smile on your face. You’ve pretty much heard every excuse in the book. So there was no reason as to why you couldn’t just confront him about it.

Wiping your hands on the towel, you stepped out of the bathroom and exited your shared room.

“Tetsu?” You called out into the halls.

No answer.

“Tetsu baby, are you home?” Maneuvering past the furniture and into the kitchen, your eyes searched the house. Empty.

He hasn’t come back.

You feel the same gripping feeling creep its way into your stomach, twisting your intestines into knots.

“Where are you?”

There’s one person who knows where he’d be if it wasn’t you. Kozume Kenma.

You pulled your phone out of the pocket of your shorts. A slight tremor in your hands as you unlocked it.

The line ringed thrice before a soft voice was heard. “Hello?” A sleepy voice spoke.

“Kenma! Im so sorry to wake you up like this but do you have any idea where kuroo is?”

“K-kuroo?” His voice’s tone much louder than before.

“Yes..” your fingers tapped anxiously against the back of your phone, awaiting a response.

A few moments of silence passed.

“Uhh I think he crashed at Lev’s place. Why? Did he not come home last night?”

“He didn’t. I’m sorry. I didn’t know who else to call so-“

“No, no. Please, don’t apologize. I’m always here to help.” Kenma cut you off. “It’s what friends are for.”

A sense of relief washed through you at his words. “Yes. You’re right. Thank you, by the way.”

“Anytime.”

You ended the call and grabbed your keys from the basket near the shoe rack.

Everything is ok. He’s probably just got drunk and stayed over at one of the boys’ house. Nothing to worry about, you affirmed to yourself.

Lev’s house was about a block away so it took you not more than a couple minutes to arrive.

You parked the car on the curb just outside of the house and pulled the keys out of the ignition.

You stayed glued to your seat for a minute, fingers drumming against the steering wheel.

“You can do this.”

A click of the car door was heard followed by the sound of your shoes against the asphalt.

Nervously biting your lip, you press the doorbell.

No answer.

You weren’t about to spend the next who knows how long waiting for one of them to open the door, so you gently push down on the knob. It’s open.

You stumbled inside, almost tripping over a pair of heels that were messily thrown right in front of the door.

A familiar pair of shoes lays near them. Also messily thrown around.

Kuroo’s shoes.

It’s Alisa’s shoes. It has to be. But doesnt Lev live alone?

Your heart started to race as you tried to convince yourself that it was nothing to be concerned about. Taking a deep breath, you decided enough was enough and that you were going to have to talk to kuroo about this.

You wandered further into the house, in search of your boyfriend, carefully avoiding the spilled juice in front of you.

The place was a mess. Beer cans and fast food packages littered the floor and tables. Broken glass and used napkins too. A party of some sort must’ve taken place. Surely no person can live like this.

After a couple minutes of looking around, you saw kuroo’s jacket hung on one of the chairs.

He’s here.

“Te-“

“That’s enough kuroo!” A female giggle resonated through the halls. You froze.

No. No it can’t be. You’re hearing things, the stress of the situation is just messing with you.

“Tetsu!” The female voice chimed again.

Tetsu.. that was the nickname you gave to him. The name that only you, were allowed to call him by. The name you gave him when you both had first met all those years ago. So who...

A breath escaped your lips, a burning feeling developing in your throat. The sound came from the room right across you.

Your mind now clouded with adrenaline.

Loud footsteps were heard as you speed walked towards the source of the sound. You didn’t care anymore. You just wanted your boyfriend back.

Your hand met the cool wood of the door and stopped. Eyes stinging from the tears. It’s now or never.

Pushing the door wide open, your breath caught in your throat at the scene in front of you.

Kuroo was on top of another girl. She was a giggling mess and he was no different. Their backs were turned to you.

They didn’t even notice you.

He didn’t even notice you.

Your emotions came crashing down like a tsunami as you stood there in silent pain. Watching the love of your life, with another girl.

A loud sob escaped past your lips. Slapping a hand over your mouth, you crumpled onto the floor on your knees.

“Y/N!”

Your eyes slowly lifted themselves up to meet his.

“How long... how long have you been..” It hurt. It hurt so bad that you couldn’t even finish what you wanted to say. What emotion were you even feeling? Anger? Sadness? In that moment, You felt everything and nothing at the same time. You lifted up your hand. The one which had the engagement ring on it. His promise to you. Did it mean nothing to him?

“No- it’s not what-“

“No, Kuroo. Don’t say anything.” you cut him off.

“How about you do one last thing for me, yeah?” Tears streamed down your face and onto the floor. Blurring your vision ever so slightly.

“Baby please-“ he started.

“No. No don’t.. don’t call me that, ok?” Forcing a smile onto your face, you gestured for him to sit down in front of you.

His mouth opened like he was about to say something, but he stopped and obeyed.

“Okay..” you wiped the tears from your eyes, not that it helped in any way.

Placing a hand under his chin, you tilted his head to the side. Hickies covered the nape of his neck down to his collarbone. Taking a sharp inhale, you let go.

“You don’t have to do this y/n. Just let me explain.” He grabbed both of your hands with his. The familiar feeling of his warm hands felt like home to you. He felt like home to you.

“Kuroo please. Just stay quiet.”

Silence.

“Tetsu.. what do you see when you look into my eyes?”

“No, not right now not this.” He pulled you into his chest, arms coming in contact with your back. “Y/N please just listen to me.”

Breaking out of his hold you hold his arms in place.

“Kuroo. Im begging you. Do it for me. One last time.” Sobs escaping your lips. “One. More. Time.”

Your searched for that familiar glint. The one that would appear every time you asked him this question. It never mattered how many times, the glint and the look of pure love in his eyes kept you alive. It was your energy source and you needed it. You needed him.

His eyes stared into yours, but not the way that they used to, the love, the admiration, everything that kept you going... was gone.

And at that moment you knew, that you were fighting a losing battle.

It was time to let go.

“I’ll See You At The Finish Line”

Requested One-Shot : Shelby Sister! x Shelby Brothers

Prompt: The boys have gone to war, expecting you to be there for when they come home. Little did they know, you were recruited as well.

Tight chests. Anxious ticks. They were leaving. You couldn’t force out your words. You were worried that you wouldn’t say everything you needed to say. Afraid that you’d kick yourself in the ass later on for not saying enough. Did they know you loved them? That you were praying for a safe venture?

“Don’t cry,” Arthur was never this affectionate. His arms held you tightly. “Don’t go, please don’t leave.” Your voice was hoarse from sobs. They were recruited. You had known about this day for weeks now, but you couldn’t believe it was already time for them to go. Polly looked to Arthur as she stood behind you. It was a joke between everyone, that you were the fifth Shelby brother. You were always closer to the men, than you were to your aunt and sister.

Arthur wasn’t afraid of dying. He was afraid of hurting you. Scared to hurt Ada, Pol, and little Finn. He was even more afraid to see his brothers die next to him. “Al-Alright,” he tried to coo as gently as possible. Tears were threatening to spill from his eyes. Ada was a wreck in the kitchen. All of the Peaky women were.

John hushed you softly as he helped Arthur pry you off. “You’re coming back right?” You pleaded to John. “You wont leave, yeah?” Your words weren’t convincing. Three men, same war. You knew the possibility of all three coming back were low. You just didn’t know which one had the odds against him.

“I’m gonna come back, I promise.” John smoothed your hair. He was always the stronger one out of both of you. More reserved, more laid-back. He knew how to calm you. Arthur made his rounds of goodbyes, as he embraced Polly. Ada was pleading to Thomas in the kitchen.

They haven’t seen you cry like this before. They were use to it with Ada. She gave them a soft-spot for emotions. She made them more understanding of women in general. Pol was very head-strong, and tried her hardest to not break down in front of the boys. But you, they haven’t seen you cry since your father left.

You shut your eyes tightly as he pulled you into his chest. Your breathing was shaky. His hands trembled on your back. John closed them to fists, trying to hide his nerves. It was no use. He was as scared as you were.

“Don’t worry,” his time was running out. He inhaled sharply through his nose, and regretfully pulled away from you. “They’ve gotta go love,” Polly softly remarked. Her words burned like an iron.

You shook your head in defiance, but you knew they had to leave. Your family couldn’t afford more Shelby men in prison, and they couldn’t spare money for a fine.

You let go of John. Your chest knotted and you picked at the fabric of your sleeves. Don’t break down. Keep it under wraps.

Arthur and John said their tearful goodbyes, and grabbed their items. They headed to the front door. The room was too tense. There was nothing you could do to stop them.

You had to see Tommy. You turned to the kitchen and he was already walking out. He stopped walking, just to look at you. You were never this weak, this fragile, this afraid.

“Don’t cry, please.” Before the war, his words could melt a room. He set down his bag and approached you. He was the one that would hurt the most. You and Tommy had a different bond than anyone else in your family. You both had a mutual understanding for each other.

He was always honest with you about family affairs. He never spoke down to you, or dismissed you as an annoying younger-sister. He treated you like a best friend. Your minds clicked. He always confided in you before any big change in the company.

His hands wiped away your tears. He was the only one you didn’t want to cry in front of. His hands moved to your cheeks as he held your face. “Don’t break my heart now,” he said lightly with a smile. You didn’t want him to change after the war, but you knew that they all would.

You felt as if you wouldn’t have any direction without them. No sense of mind. Polly was helpful, but you had a tendency to rebel against her suggestions.

You could only shake your head in response to his words. You felt your lip tremble and you knew you were close to losing it. His hands kept you steady. “Please be safe,” was all you could muster. You were going over the things you’d remember him for in your head. His bar-fights, slick jokes, willingness to help people. You were going to hold onto that, and hope that he did the same. “I will.. I will,” he mumbled reassuringly, pulling you into a hug.

Your tears burned hot as they drenched his shirt. You held onto him tightly. No one in your family was this affectionate. You weren’t use to it, and neither was he. Situations like this made most of you uncomfortable. This was different. You didn’t want to let go. Tommy didn’t either. “I’ll make my way back to you,” he promised. You couldn’t stand the thought of being alone without him. No one else picked your brains quite like he could.

“I guess I’ll see you at the finish line,” you spoke into his shoulder. He knew it was time to go, when Polly walked near and shot him a knowingly-glance. He couldn’t be late to the station. There was love between all of you in that house. It went unspoken.

“That you will,” he said pressing a kiss to the side of your head. He backed up and firmly clasped your shoulders. “No more crying. When I come home, you better have not snuck any boys into the house. And if I find out, its your ass.” he threatened to lighten your frown. “No promises, I’ll just have them sleep in your bed,” you laughed through stinging tears. Your face was red from distraught, but you mustered a smile. His hands dropped from your shoulders. All he could do was nod with tight lips and fake a smile. Now it was really time for them to go. He picked up his bag from the floor.

You couldn’t move. You stared at his back as he walked to the door. Arthur and John had been waiting outside. At least they would all be together. They weren’t by themselves in all of this. “Oh and another thing,” Tommy called back as he opened the door. “Don’t fuck with my things,” he said pointing a finger specifically to you. “No promises,” you responded once again. He shot you one last weakened smile, and with that, they were gone.

The months to come were hectic. Getting into the swing of managing the business, and gambling accounts was rough. Pol knew what she was doing, and helped earnestly to guide to and Ada. Yet, she had more of a knack for it than you did.

The house was quiet. It was also clean. You began to realize how messy the men in your family were. It didn’t take long for you to register that you had no purpose in the house. You didn’t contribute to womanly duties, and quite frankly, you never intended on doing so.

When you first caught wind of more nurses being needed in war, it quickly became a thought in the back of your head. You were never ill at the sight of blood, and have always wanted learn proper stitching methods. You’ve closed up wounds, but no one’s ever said you’ve done the prettiest job.

Polly rejected the idea of you going into war. She refused to let you leave. “Too many of us are gone. I don’t want to risk losing one of you if it’s not necessary.” Ada on the other-hand, understood your need for it. She knew you were passionate about it. Which is why she went with you to the train station.

When Ada came back without you, Polly knew she had lied. You didn’t go to the market, you had sold yourself to the government. She didn’t speak to Ada for days. She felt betrayed. Almost all of her children except for two, stayed back from the war. Finn was just a child, and Ada knew better to partake. She never really forgave you for leaving.

The sights you saw. The amputations, the deaths, the burns. War was a cruel thing. All the men fighting were just pawns in a game of. It was always in the forefront of your mind. What if one day Arthur was rushed in with no legs? What if Johns tore-up body flat lined in front of you? What if they never got the chance to find Thomas’ body on the field. He stayed an unnamed corpse. These were the thoughts that kept you awake in your cot.

The hospital never slept. The noises of agony and pain rang through the halls. The pleas for mercy, the cries for death. You could never get past the smell. Sleep was off the table. Most times, you figured yourself mad. Shadows running down the hall. Shaking hands whenever someone would die in front of you. It was your fault. No matter how battered, you always blamed yourself for the deaths of soldiers. The ones that were too far gone. You’d close their eyes and wheel out the body.

Your mind was numb. Emotionless.

Many nights you’d spend your moments of peace crying your eyes out in the cleaners closet. You knew you were saving lives. You couldn’t help but imagine your brothers suffering the same fate as the men down the hall.

When the war was over, infantry was sent home first. Then the back-ranks, and finally the med teams.

When your brothers came back from war, they were all changed. Arthur wasn’t loud and boastful. He was quiet and shut-off. John didn’t talk much within the first hour of being home, and Thomas no longer smiled. The color was drained from their faces. Polly tried to grab all of them in her arms. Arthur flinched at first, and John weakly hugged back. Thomas didn’t budge.

Ada stood behind Polly with Finn on her hip. They were almost unrecognizable. “Just a long trip back,” Arthur muttered for a false explanation.

“Wheres Y/N?” Thomas quipped. Polly’s face dropped, and John looked up from the floorboards. Something wasn’t right. “Well she..” Ada tried to start.

You weren’t dead, and you weren’t missing. That much was obvious. “Spit it out,” Tommy spoke coldly. His eyes didn’t break from Adas. The pressure to answer resided heavily in the room. John sheepishly looked to Thomas.

Polly felt the snap in him. “About three months after you all left, she did too.” Her voice was calm as possible.

Arthur’s brows furrowed with confusion. “Moved out? Fuck happened?” He questioned. John still kept his mouth shut. They were already asking what he was wondering.

“No, you’re not understanding me...” Polly chimed. Thomas was thinking long and hard. He saw the expression on Adas face and pieced it together. “Then say it in a way we’ll understand,” He snapped, hoping to be wrong.

“She went to war..” Ada spoke up. Johns ears started to burn. His baby sister joined the fight? “She enlisted as a nurse. Wrote one letter telling us she was assigned to the field medics..” Her voice dropped with each word.

Thomas couldn’t believe this. His eyes were wide with rage. “You fucking let her join?” Arthur shouted, setting his bags on the floor. There was a timid aggression that had grown in all of them. Ada felt the weight of her assistance, breaking down her shoulders.

“You know how she is Arthur,” Polly grew defensive. “Shes stubborn and-” “And naive!” Thomas finally broke. “She left on her own Thomas!” Polly snapped back, covering up for Ada.

John ran his hands through his hair and moved to sit near the dinner table. He still hadn’t said a word. “Are you fucking mad!” Thomas boasted. He never yelled at either of them before. Not like this at least.

Polly saw the deep issues that grew within all of them. The fear, the aggression, the passion to hate. She took his anger. Let him get his punches out.

“She’ll be back in a few weeks. The paper said there weren’t enough trains to send every one home.” Her words did the opposite of calm him. He pinched the bridge of his nose. “I need a fucking smoke,” He muttered walking back out of the door.

Arthur shook his head in disbelief. The women didn’t expect this kind of reunion. The men didn’t either.

Thomas sat down on the curb outside. If he didn’t leave the house, he’d put a hole in the wall. His hands were shaking as he pulled out a cigarette. It was too cold outside for his current attire, but he didn’t care.

He lit the flame and stared at the carriages trotting by. The people on the streets embracing one another. He looked down at the cobblestone. Fucking unbelievable. You were suppose to be there when he came home. He was suppose to take comfort in knowing that you’d be there to help him through this. He couldn’t imagine what you must have seen.

He inhaled smoke, letting it burn his tightened chest. Now the tables have turned, and the cards were switched. He was going to have to be your support system as well. He held his forehead in his hands. He shut his emotionless eyes, and sat in thought.

“At the end of the finish line,” he hummed to himself. His mind was still in France. Fighting a war that no one else could quite see. Yet his empty shell of a body was back in Birmingham. Broken, scarred. He inhaled, and sighed through his nose.

Despite his disappointment and inner rage, he knew he had to be strong to distinguish your fire that would burn brighter than his. He was just hoping you’d make it home in one piece.

“All right,” Goodyhay said. “Anybody that thinks all he’s got to do is sit on his stern and have salvation come down on him like a cloudburst or something, dont belong in here. You got to get up on your feet and hunt it down until you can get a-hold of it and then hold it, even fighting off if you have to. And if you cant find it, then by God make it. Make a salvation He will pass and then earn the right to grab it and hold on and fight off too if you have to but anyway hold it, hell and high water be damned—” when a voice, a man, interrupted:

“Tell it again, Joe. Go on. Tell it again.”

“What?” Goodyhay said.

“Tell it again,” the man said. “Go on.”

“I tried to,” Goodyhay said. “You all heard me. I cant tell it.”

“Yes you can,” the man said; now there were women’s voices too:

“Yes, Joe. Tell it,” and he, Mink, still watching the hands not clenched but just closed on the plank, the coldly seething anchorite’s eyes—the eyes of a fifth-century hermit looking at nothing from the entrance of his Mesopotamian cave—the body rigid in an immobility like a tremendous strain beneath a weight.

“All right,” Goodyhay said. “I was laying there. I was all right, everything snafu so I was all right. You know how it is in water when you dont have any weight at all, just laying there with the light coming way down from up on top like them lattice blinds when they shake and shiver slow in a breeze without making any sound at all. Just laying there watching my hands floating along without me even having to hold them up, with the shadow of them lattice blinds winking and shaking across them, and my feet and legs too, no weight at all, nowhere to have to go or march, not even needing to breathe, not even needing to be asleep or nothing: just all right. When there He was standing over me, looking like any other shavetail just out of a foxhole, maybe a little older, except he didn’t have a hat, bucket: just standing there bareheaded with the shadow of the lattice running up and down him, smoking a cigarette. ‘Fall in, soldier,’ He said.

“ ‘I cant,’ I says. Because I knew that as long as I laid still, I would be all right. But that once I let myself start thinking about moving, or tried to, I would find out l couldn’t. But what the hell, why should I? I was all right. I had had it. I had it made. I was sacked up. Let them do whatever they.…ing wanted to with their.…ing war up on top.

“ ‘That’s once,’ He said. ‘You aint got but three times. You, the Top Soldier, saying cant. At Château-Thierry and St-Mihiel the company would have called you the Top Soldier. Do they still do that in the Corps on Guadalcanal?’

“ ‘Yes,’ I says.

“ ‘All right, Top Soldier,’ He said. ‘Fall in.’ So I got up. ‘At ease,’ He said. ‘You see?’ He said.

“ ‘I thought I couldn’t,’ I says. ‘I didn’t believe I could.’

“ ‘Sure,’ He said. ‘What else do we want with you. We’re already full up with folks that know they can but dont, since because they already know they can, they dont have to do it. What we want are folks that believe they cant, and then do it. The other kind dont need us and we dont need them. I’ll say more: we dont even want them in the outfit. They wont be accepted; we wont even have them under our feet. If it aint worth that much, it aint worth anything. Right?’

“ ‘Yes sir,’ I says.

“ ‘You can say Sir up there too if you want,’ He said. ‘It’s a free country. Nobody gives a damn. You all right now?’ ”

‘Yes sir,’ I says.

“ ‘TenSHUN!’ He said. And I made them pop, mud or no mud. ‘About-FACE!’ He said. And He never saw one smarter than that one neither. ‘Forward MARCH!’ He said. And I had already stepped off when He said, ‘Halt!’ and I stopped. ‘You’re going to leave him laying there,’ He said. And there he was, I had forgot about him, laying there as peaceful and out of it too as you please—the damned little bastard that had gone chicken at the exact wrong time, like they always do, turned the wheel a-loose and tried to duck and caused the whole damn mess; lucky for all of us he never had a.…ing bar on his shoulder so he could have.…ed up the whole detail and done for all of us.

“ ‘I cant carry him too,’ I says.

“ ‘That’s two times,’ He said. ‘You’ve got one more. Why not go on and use it now and get shut of it for good?’

“ ‘I cant carry him too,’ I says.

“ ‘Fine,’ He said. ‘That’s three and finished. You wont ever have to say cant again. Because you’re a special case; they gave you three times. But there’s a general order coming down today that after this nobody has but one. Pick him up.’ So I did. ‘Dismiss,’ He said. And that’s all. I told you I cant tell it. I was just there. I cant tell it.”

You had been sitting on the couch on your phone when you saw a tweet Colby had posted talking about how he was now a fifth wheel and because you had your notifications on for him you had immediately seen it. The laughter came out in a short burst and Brennen being the nosy bitch he is, was sitting near you leaned over quickly to see what you were laughing at.

“Ooh.. y/n and Colby sitting in a tree. K. I. S. S. Ing” He sang to you.

“Shut up moron, you’re more in love with him than I am” You retort quickly, hoping he would shut up about it.

“But even if im more in love with him that still means you’re in love with him, see that guys.” He speaks to the camera now “y/n just admitted she’s in love with Colby” You roll your eyes in annoyance, continuing to look at your phone before you speak again.

“You know damn well I didnt mean it like that” You say as you push him with your foot. “You’re a friggen idiot, now get your ugly bitchass out my face” He just laughs at you and points the camera your way to annoy you further. Once he is over annoying you he walks off to his room probably to go and tell Colby what he has just said and even though you could hear him gossiping about you to Colby you didn’t care very much because you knew how Colby felt towards you.

To him you were his best friends little sister, you knew him and his moral stand point. He would never try and go after his best friends sister.

“Y/N!” You heard Brennen call from another room in the house, “Y/N!” He continued, waiting for you to answer so he knew where you were in the house.

“What Brennen, geez” You reply, grunting as you get off the couch annoyed that he would even make you get up.

“Oh nothing, I just wanted you to know your boyfriend is coming over” You look at him like he has lost his mind.

“I don’t have a boyfriend and you know it, I’m literally always complaining about it” You tried to remind him just how single you were but all you got was an eyeroll in return.

“You know I’m talking about Colby”

“Oh, you meant your boyfriend” You laughed at him and walked away into your room hoping you wouldn’t actually have to see Colby when he arrived.

But not long after you heard the front door open and close with a loud bang and you knew it was Colby, he was never subtle or quiet when he came over. Wanting everyone to know that he is there.

“Honey I’m home” Colby yelled through the house.

“In the kitchen sweetie” You heard your older brother yell back in response, you laughed from your room. Colby had heard your giggle and made a b-line to your room.

“Hey y/n, didn’t realise you were going to be here.”

“Mhm, sure” You rolled your eyes at him and continue to look at the device in your hand “where else would I be Cole?” You replied as sarcastic as you could without coming off as a bitch.

You knew that he knew you were going to be home today because you had heard Brennen tell him over the phone, you were guessing that he looked this good because they were going to be filming a video but the thought of him dressing up for you had crossed your mind. You walk up to the door and lean on the door frame with a smile.

“Love the hair, Brock” you tell him as you run your hand through it and mess it up before pushing his head back to move him out of the way so you could close your door and continue with what you had been previously doing.

You heard him walk into the kitchen and greet your brother with a hard slap on the back.

“Your sisters lookin hot today” You heard Colby chuckle after his comment right before Brennen’s reply.

“Ew, dont be fuckin gross dude. Thats my sister you perv.” Brennen reacted the exact way you would have expected him to but you had never expected for Colby to say something like that to your brother, knowing you were just a wall away.

You had decided to take a nap while the boys filmed their video so that you didnt disturb them and also because you could feel your body becoming sluggish due to lack of sleep you had been getting.

You had just woken up and checked your social media before you heard a knock at your door. You got up to see who it was and it was the beautiful blue eyed, blue haired boy you had been crushing on.

“Hey”

“Hi?” You asked curiously, just now rubbing the sleep from your eyes and letting out a soft yawn. You could see Colby smiling at you even through sleep coated eyes.

“I was wondering if you you wanted to go out to dinner?” He asked as he scratched his neck, a nervous habit you had grown fond of.

“Uh yeah sure! Where’s Brennen at?” You smiled at him and looked around him to see where your brother was.

“Ooh, uhm he is editing. I was hoping maybe it could just be the two of us?”

“Uhm yeah... sure” You were a little bit suspicious about his sudden request to go to dinner alone with you. “Let me get dressed and we can go?”

“Yeah, okay” He walked off in the direction that was Brennen’s room, you hoped that he already knew about this because you didnt want to be coming home to Brennen being a jerk towards you so you texted to see if he was fine with you going to dinner with Colby and he just responded with a thumbs up emoji. I mean, thats as good as its going to get right?

With the okay being sent through, you get dressed to go to dinner with Colby only taking a few minutes not wanting to put too much pressure on this. Whatever this was. You walk to Brennen’s room and inform Colby that you are ready to eat and he gets up and youse both say goodbye to Brennen, as you walk away you can see a smirk forming on your brothers face.

“Alright, where to?” Colby asks you as he holds the door open for you to walk through.

“Tendergreens, right?”

“You know my favourite restaurant?” He asks you with a smile, a red tinge creeping onto his cheeks.

“I know a lot more about you than I probably should, thanks to Brennen”

“Maybe Brennen has been trying to set us up this whole time” Colby says and youse both laugh but then realise that exactly what he has been trying to do, remembering how he reacted when you and Colby were leaving.

“I think thats exactly what he is doing to be honest” You reply before getting into Colby’s car and youse begin your journey to dinner, this is all you had been thinking about since the day you had met Colby. You never thought that the lame senarios you came up with would come to fruition.

“What a weirdo, trying to set up his little sister with his best friend” He jokes, and even though he was joking you were hoping this was going to be an actual date and not just another senarios to daydream about later. You knew that if you didn’t say anything you would be stuck in this weird limbo of ‘what are we’ so you gained as much courage as you could before speaking. You could feel your stomach in your throat before you began speaking, this could either work in your favour or be the worst moment of your life.

“I just wanted to say that even though Brennen is always teasing me for it and I always deny it... I do have a crush on you” You said the last part in a whisper, your voice losing its courage and turning into something pathetic. You didn’t want to see his reaction at all so you sat there staring at the window and even though you could see him smirking at you in the reflection of the window you still didn’t know how to feel about this whole situation. Your heart was racing in your chest and your palms were sweating like crazy.

“You have to know by now that I have a crush on you too” He laughed, another nervous tell of his. You hadnt realised that Colby had the car parked in front of the restaurant already. You didn’t know how to reply but you did know how you felt and the feelings were growing stronger by then second.

“Alright then, lets get some food. Im starving” You laugh at him and get out of the car, following closely behind Colby into the restaurant and taking your seat next to him.

Youse spoke for hours and ate the food, he let you steal from his meal a little bit and you let him take from yours. Youse had never been alone like this before and you didn’t want it to end, it was like a new found freedom that you didnt want to let go. You hoped that Colby felt the same way you did.

When Colby drops you off you skip straight to Brennen’s room to tell him everything that happened. Joy radiating off of you.

“Thanks for setting us up Brennen, we actually had a really good time” You sat down at the end of his bed.

“Well, Colby said it was terrible. So I don’t know who to believe.” He said to you as you had just finished gloating and your heart could have fallen out of your chest in this moment.

“Oh” Heartbreak was written all over your face and he could tell, there was a tear pricking the inner corner of your eye but you didn’t let it out.

“I was kidding, damn dude. Calm down.” He said and kicked you off his bed, a loud thud being heard from your ass hitting the floor at high speed.

“You’re a friggen asshole, you know” You tell him as you pick yourself up off the floor and walk away.

“He had a really good time, wont stop gushing about it. I’m probably gonna vomit its so gross” He showed you a few text messages he had recieved from Colby, there were plenty of heart eye emojis.

“Okay, I get it. But I shouldn’t be looking at these messages, its an envasion of privacy” You tell him as you leave the room, taking one last look at the phone before leaving.

She looked so gorgeous and she wasn’t even trying

The last text message you saw had read, you felt all giddy and you didn’t know what to do. But you knew you wanted to be around Colby all the time.

Why the Eagles won’t buy a high ticket item in the offseason

I recently came across a quote while reading Thucydides “The History of the Peloponnesian War” that struck a nerve. While I don’t make it a habit to equate the Spartan and Athenian struggle to the offseason, this one seemed fitting for the Philadelphia Eagles and Howie Roseman’s approach. Not because he’s reactionary in his nature, but quite the opposite.

“Reckless audacity came to be considered the courage of a loyal ally; prudent hesitation, specious cowardice; moderation was held to be a cloak for unmanliness…”

This is how a mob reacts and shows you just how detached from normality the war made the Greeks. By comparison, Howie Roseman tends to take a forward-thinking approach to his wheeling and dealing, but there’s still a foundation of pragmatism.

He’s rarely found overreaching or taken by a moment in time. Consider, for example, the following:

Swapped 74th overall selection for 99th overall selection and Timmy Jernigan. 25 years old, $3M cap hit.

Ronald Darby was acquired for a third-round pick and Jordan Matthews, who they would sign again later. 24 years old, 3M cap hit.

Jay Ajayi cost a fourth-round pick. 24 years old, 326K cap hit.

Michael Bennett and a seventh-round selection were acquired for a fifth-round pick and wide receiver Marcus Johnson. 32 years old, 5.7M cap hit.

Golden Tate cost what became a late third round selection. 30 years old, 3.7M cap hit.

You can look further back for other deals, but none were of a blockbuster nature. The 2012 and 2014 deals to bring in Houston Texans’ linebacker DeMeco Ryans and New Orleans Saints’ running back Darren Sproles combined for a $6.6M cap hit in the first year of those contracts.

There are other trades of higher impact, like dealing Kevin Kolb and Donovan McNabb, but those involve shipping out players and picks for picks and/or players on rookie contracts (see Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie). Unless we’re talking about the uber-aggressive move to select Carson Wentz, there’s no history of blockbuster trades that cost the Eagles significant cap or draft capital.

Recently the free agents Roseman has chosen to bring in represent low cost, proven commodities. Players like Mike Wallace, Haloti Ngata, Stefen Wisniewski, and Torrey Smith. The Alshon Jeffery deal was a splash, but a calculated one. He was brought in on a one-year prove it deal worth $9.5M before being extended mid-season. Jernigan was similarly extended in November of 2018, well into the season.

Even when the Eagles doled out bigger contracts, they weren’t what they appeared to be. For instance, “Brandon Brooks signed a 5 year, $40 million contract with Philadelphia” looks like a hefty burden upfront. Over the first three years that contract has only amounted to approximately $14.6M combined, less than a $5M average. So even when taking a swing in free agency, the initial hit was light. Roseman kicks the can down the road and then bends that can later in the contract.

He’s done the same with Rodney McLeod, who signed a “5 year, $35 million contract.” Over the first three years of that contract the cap hit has amounted to roughly $14.2M combined. Again, less than $5M per year. Both the Brooks and McLeod contracts have been modified at one point or another to reduce their impact.

This is a far cry from the Roseman that was tasked with constructing the “win-now” Dream Team. It’s easy to see he has learned his lesson. The big contracts doled out have been pre-emptive strikes to retain home-grown talent with a keen eye towards future market value of the position.

The evidence above leads me to believe that the impact signing or trade many have been clamoring for isn’t in the cards. That means Antonio Brown, Le’Veon Bell, and even restricted free agents like Robby Anderson or potential tag targets like DeMarcus Lawrence are long shots to come to Philadelphia. It’s not sexy, but it’s the result of a sensible philosophy regarding talent acquisition.

I’m saying all of this in the face of a recent report by Tony Pauline that the Eagles may aggressively seek to sign an edge rusher in free agency. Perhaps that’s true. If it is, I’m curious to how that contract will be constructed on the front end and how or when it eventually gets restructured.

As author Donald Kagan writes, this time regarding the Corinthian decision to back Epidamnian democrats despite it causing conflict with Corcyra, which set off a chain of events leading to the Peloponnesian War:

“The real motives were often psychological and irrational rather than economic and practical...”

So while the masses will love the appeal of a bombshell signing or trade, I’ll be over here quietly pounding the table. I’ll be pounding the table for players begging to start, like Pittsburgh Steelers’ linebacker LJ Fort. I’ll be pounding the table for role players like Kansas City Chiefs’ running back Spencer Ware that can do a little bit of everything.

Above all else, I’ll be pounding the table for an economic and practical approach that seeks out low-cost, reliable, plug-and-play contributors. I think Roseman will be doing the same.

Alexander Brown Part One

Brown wakes up in his apartment. His Toilet is a foot from his stove, which is a foot from the sofa, where he sleeps. These early hours are on autopilot, he lacks actual consciousness until his fourth or fifth cup of coffee. Now at work, a grey cubicle, sounds of typing and occasional chatter echo throughout. He notices someone whos been speaking to his side and realizes his boss holding a stack of papers. "Is that understood?" He says, Brown attempts to smile as he nods. The boss is wearing his "kooky" tie so it's monday, and since it's monday he'll be doing the same crap he does every day, so whatever the boss said doesn't matter. Brown looks to the papers, then to his computer, then to the papers again. Brown forgot what he's even doing here. Robby walks by, the company's in-house philosopher, every week he hands out motivational leaflets. Brown finds them generic and dillusional, yet the material well suitable for toilet paper, which is regulated to 4 squares a day. "Alex-dog!" says Robby "Whatcha workin on hombre?" "I honestly don't know." "Remember what confucius says, Alex-dog, don't matter how slow ya go, so long as ya keep on goin'!" "Heh, that ones not bad Robby." Robby smiles a little more "Thought ya'd like it A-train, peace out." He pats the cubicle wall and leaves. Brown takes the man's advice and slows his progress even more than usual. Muscle memory takes over as he scans the monitor for numbers and typing away at forms. At work, he did only what he needed to get by, otherwise he lived in daydreams. Dreaming of a world without laws, free of man's folly, just the natural world. In his dreams, Brown is a gazelle, spending his days fiddling in the grasslands. His gazelle family consists of a mate and eight kids, and their days are rich with frolicing. A loud beep brings him back to reality. His eleven hour shift is over. He fits into a cramped elevator. There he finds himself beside his boss. "Ah, Alex." He says "How are things?" "Same ol, same ol." "I hear that, are those papers in order?" "All sorted, chief." "Good to hear," the elevator hits the bottom floor and the door opens. "Just one moment, Alex." "Yes?" "You carry your fathers name well, keep up the good work and you'll go far." Brown thinks about how poorly that reflects on the rest of the department, then takes the compliment. "Thank you sir, I'll see you around." On the bus, a woman spots him, someone he once knew well, though now he can't recall her name. "Alex! I haven't seen you in years, how's the civilian life been treating you?" Brown is caught a little off guard, he smiles and says "Been a long time since I saw someone from the old days, and I get by." "Good to hear, you know we could use a guy like you again." "Hope you find one." The woman looks disappointed, and theres a long pause. "Well, I'm sure you know it's not a coincidence I ran into you." "Yeah yeah, sorry but you're wasting your time." "Oh come on, your old man's corporate job? Thats not you." Brown is silent. "Remember when we were both assigned to the Callahan case?" "Heheh, all too well." "I was in the car submitting forms while you grabbed a shotgun and crashed through the window." "Everyone knew that place was a rat house, just too damn scared to do something." "The chief was furious, but you left a hell of a dent on the Callahan mafia. Brown looks longingly out the window. There is a long pause between them, then the girl says "Look, I don't know how to say this but I need to talk to you about something." Brown's expression fades, "Look, it's been nice talking to you, but those days are behind me." The bus reaches his apartment complex. "Wait, the department is falling apart, no one else will help me." The woman tries to stop him but Brown hurries away, refusing to look back. He drops his suitcase and immediately plops on the sofa. Truth be told he wanted to help her, hell part of him would kill to go back to the old days. Then Brown remembers, the man it made him, the things he's done. He buries his head in a pillow and dreams of gazelles. He wakes with a horrible headache. Everything is black, his limbs are tied to a wooden chair. "Hahah, looks like he's moving around." A ogrish voice says. Brown thinks about asking where he his, but realises he won't like the answer. "What are we gonna do to him, boss?" the sound of a mans steps echo, slowly approaching. "Now this is a special guest." this voice is deep, elegant, and strangly familiar to Brown. "What do you want with me?" says Brown. "I'll cut to the chase," the man pulls a hood off brown, whose vision is hazy. "I have a job for you, one you wont like." "Fuck off." "Im afriad you don't have a choice, detective." "I'd rather die, I don't give a shit." "I know you don't, but she cares about hers." The man motions to a henchman, he wheels in a woman, the girl from the bus. She's tied to a wooden board with wheels, striped naked and bruised all over. She attempts a muffled scream. "If you refuse, we'll start killing cops, one by one." Brown looks furious. The man pulls a gun and points it to her head. "I'm going to break you for what you did to us." Knowing theres no good way out of this, Brown decides to play along until he has a plan. "... What do you want me to do?"
