Yugioh pet names
I’ve been on a rewatch of YGO while I embroider because it requires a lot of my attention. Dear lord does it need the Dragon Ball Kai treatment…
Also, I feel recently there’s been a resurgence of the fandom for some reason. Soooo here’s some dumb headcanons that refused to leave my brain about the boys who play children’s card games.
🃏 Yugi: cutie, baby, honey, sweetheart, my love, bunny. This man is a ray of sunshine and will use them often. A total sucker for pet names. Will blush with the more serious ones, giving and receiving, but always says them with a smile.
👑 Yami/Atem: my love, my dearest, darling. Takes it very seriously, won’t do it unless he has your full attention. Often accompanied by a gentle caress of your cheek.
🐉 Seto: Princess (derogatory), babe (derogatory), moron (affectionate), brat (affectionate). Honestly I can see him using two pet names seriously: darling and your first name. Uses darling extremely sparingly. But call him darling he will become a flustered mess.
🐶 Joey: Doll, cupcake, Princess, babe, sweet cheeks, darlin’ - this man is BIG on pet names, teasing or not. Unlike Seto he overdoes it to annoy you. Throw them back at him and enjoy the cringe contest! Winner gets a kiss~
☀️ Tristan: baby, hun, pretty lady, gorgeous. He’s a simple man with simple tastes, but he says them from the heart.
🇬🇧 Ryou: sweetheart, my love, beautiful, dear heart. Can see him as a romantic, will always blush when he says it, even if you’re in a long term relationship.
🎲 Duke: babe, Princess, gorgeous, sunshine. Always with the flirty inflection, a wink and a smile. Possibly a kiss on the back of your hand if he’s feeling particularly cheeky.
🥩 Bakura: idiot (affectionate), my beloved, my dear. Surprisingly uses them often, and even more surprisingly is he’s serious about it. If he calls you by your actual name it would probably shock you.
🏍️ Marik: habibi, my love, my dear. Yes I know habibi is very basic, but hey, I see him as someone who keeps it simple but also takes it very seriously. Will probably blush like mad when he does it. Until he finds his confidence.

I have rated Yu-Gi-Oh fits
Tumblr media
8/10
Yugi may be in his school uniform, but he bedazzled the shit out of it and it works. The hair is bright and eye catching in a fantastic way, all three belts make him look like he shops at hot topic regularly, the chain on his puzzle is so good and works so well. The only thing that keeps this from a perfect 10 is I think some earrings would've tied the whole thing together
Tumblr media
6/10
Kind of basic, but I get it. Joey is broke as hell. His hair is fantastic though and the dog tag is honestly kind of funny and looks great on him. This rating is the same for all of his outfits.
Tumblr media
5/10
Also basic, also saved by his hair. It looks like cake. Honestly, I like his season 1 fit the most, but I like it more in the manga because he has a bandana and that's interesting.
Tumblr media
Image by EarthToJaymus on Reddit
8/10
She looks cute in this. Admittedly it isn't my favorite outfit that she's worn, but it is her most iconic, and I like it a lot. The bracelets are cute, high waisted mom shorts are clowned in too much, and I like her shirt. My only problem is thelat she's wearing socks and sandals.
Tumblr media
Image taken by me.
10/10
I chose this outfit out the other ones because It's the only one he put on by himself, and he ate and left no crumbs. He looks so good it's criminal. The ankhs are cool, the bondage shirt is badass, his hair is so fantastic and amazing it makes me want to cry.
Tumblr media
11/10
He's so cool.
Tumblr media
4/10
It's the shirt. The teal just isn't it. His Dsod fit is a 9/10 though.
Tumblr media
6/10
He looks like he wants to be stuffed like a build-a-bear and doesn't realize it. He looks like he wants to dress like a mix of Dib Membrane and Zim but doesn't wanna be bullied. He looks like he'd melt if I put him in Oklahoma.
Tumblr media
7/10
He put this outfit on all by himself, and decided that skechers would tie the look together... Dumbass
Tumblr media
5/10
I like the hair, but his suit.

random vaguely prideshipping-but-mostly-dsod thoughts part 2
part 1 here
kaiba's kneepads in dsod?!?!? they're so ridiculous i love them so much (he is prepared to see atem again. in all sense of the word.)
eras tour at kaibacorp stadium!!!! kaiba would fucking love mastermind. mokuba is a you're on your own kid girlie. atem is all about karma.
"we should have known [ai atem] was designed by kaiba as soon as we saw the extra-dramatic coat" and his perfectly-coiffed hair
where is the kc space station anyway? the iguanas are endemic to the galapagos?? how would kaiba have gotten a permit to build there in the first place??
ishizu must have been so pissed off when she hears about kaiba digging up atem's tomb again
she's gonna hit him with the big hammer (millennium rod) if he ever comes back from the damn afterlife
kaiba is So Obsessed, i can't believe this is all canon?? we'd call it ooc if it was in fanon tbh
sometimes i think about atem and kaiba breaking into kaibacorp in the orichalchos arc. "i think you're nuts. but this isn't the time or place to argue." "i trusted you, now you have to trust me." and then atem is the only person to ever ride in the blue-eyes jet besides mokuba??
YOU HAVE YOUR BOND WITH HIM AND I HAVE MINE
poor yugi is realizing a few things
kaiba and his dragons are just so much. pandemic dragon??????
being a regular non-dueling citizen in domino must be so confusing. who is this pharaoh they keep talking about?!
yugi tries to walk kaiba through the five stages of grief in the span of one duel
i like to imagine that kaiba's dislike of the dark magician is a remnant of seto and mahad's ancient rivalry
"oooof. he's looked better." seto kaiba, my big bitch <3
how many times has kaiba died to save the world or his dueling partner (or both)
palladium oracle mahad is the coolest version of him tbh
the ending is always so good. not just for the reunion, but for how open-ended it is?? lots of great ways for fanon to expand the story yay we love that

IM SO FUCKING HEATEDDDD
Let me cook okay?
So, I finally watched DSOD for the first time in Japanese.
WTF.
They changed sooooo much when they dubbed it like I want to scream at a fucking wall. Do I think the dubbed version is good? Yes. Do I think the story is good? Absolutely.
HOWEVER
The original Japanese version keeps all the emotion and drama. It really dives deep into the Prana (Plana) storyline (Which was honestly hella confusing in the dubbed version) and Kaiba's will and determination to see Atem again actually makes FUCKING SENSE instead of him just being a sore loser and wanted to battle him again.
He created the new duel disk TO TRANSCEND DIMENSIONS. Something that I feel gets sorely overlooked in the dubbed version.
But it isn't just Kaiba...it's Yugi too.
In the dubbed Yugi talks about missing him and this and that...but the original it hardly talks about him because he's trying his best to FORGET HIM! Jonouchi literally calls him out on it when he's looking at his deck on the bridge before saving Aigami. To me in the original, that is just Yugi's way of coping with the loss. In the dubbed it made him seem weak? In a way I guess. But let us not forget.
YUGI IS THE KING OF GAMES...NOT ATEM.
I have more thoughts but like, I'll just get more heated. Please, I hope I'm not the only one who feels this way. Why did I deprive myself of the original for so long?!
Don't get me wrong. I love the dubbed version. It will always have my heart because it is what I grew up with and I love the script. I just wish they would have kept at least SOME of the drama and passion that the Japanese original has always carried.
If you made it this far....thanks for letting me cook. <3

Hihi!! Seto Kaiba for the character ask 3 and 7?
Thank you for asking! Answers for this post and still taking asks if anyone else is interested!
3. What was their best canon look?
I'm actually quite tied between his Duelist Kingdom outfit (I love it so much I have my own version of it for myself, as just regular clothes) and his white suit from season five (is just so slick and professional). Obviously his upgraded dueling outfit in DSOD was awesome and extra, but I like to think more about what Kaiba wears day to day. The Duelist Kingdom outfit is the closest we see him get to being casual ever, and unless I'm mistaken, the first scene we see that outfit is when he's working on the Duel Disk prototype. It's the outfit he picked for fiddling with his tech in his own home, and that makes it feel more personal, in a sense. This is what he wore when he was alone and not necessarily trying to impress anybody, and we don't get to see that part of Kaiba too often. (And in my Rock Bottom series, this is the outfit I have him in from halfway in Season Zero up through the end of Season Two, so this one is almost def my fave based on that.)
7. What do you think they would appreciate as a gift?
I had to triple check this one because I kept getting it mixed up with 5 and I was like, "wait, I already have something written for this, don't I?" and the answer is true for both, actually.
The thing about Kaiba is, he can already have whatever he wants. That's the worst kind of person to buy a present for, because you think, "Well if he wanted this, he would have gotten it for himself already, yeah?" And that's not necessarily true with Kaiba. He doesn't make time to take care of himself or enjoy himself, so a gift geared toward that would be very appreciated from a loved one. So I think secretly planning a vacation for him (Mokuba or Ishizu) or custom handmade BEWD art of some kind (Ryou) would be really nice for him. In the past I've usually written Joey as giving him *ahem* certain sexual experiences *ahem* as a present because Joey doesn't pretend he can give Kaiba a good gift, but he does know that he can show him a good time.
Another thing that would be sweet and specifically thoughtful imo (and this feels like something Duke would do) would be to look at the years that he was either in the orphanage or with Gozaburo, track down the systems and game copies for the best games that came out during those years, and spend a few weekends with him playing the games he missed out on during the time that he most needed them. Make sure that time is blocked out on his schedule and just have fun.
In Power of Three, well before Ryou and Seto get together, Ryou gives him a Christmas card with a single serving of tea inside, and at the time he's Kaiba's first actual real authentic genuine sees-him-as-a-real-human-being, talks-literature-and-philosphy-with-him-over-coffee FRIEND, so he's just touched way more by it than Ryou realizes. The gift is part of Kaiba's new experience with genuine friendship. It's just a little thing, but coming from Ryou, it meant something.
I have actually spent a lot of time on this question before and written a few of those scenes. And that was a really long answer to two simple questions, sorry about that! 😅
For fun, I'm including a snippet from my old Euroshipping fic Tainted Love below, where Ryou gives Kaiba a handmade BEWD sculpture for Christmas, it elaborates on it being a good gift for him (besides the obvious reason).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Go ahead, open it. But be careful: it's fragile."
Intrigued, Seto tugged away the ribbon, peeled back the wrapping paper, and removed the lid of the box. He lifted away the flat piece of styrofoam and lifted away a few layers of tissue paper—then stopped, eyes wide in genuine surprise. As carefully as he was capable of doing so, Seto extracted his gift from its nest of protective wrapping.
"Did you make this?" he asked, voice so quiet that Ryou could hardly hear him above the sound of the fire.
"Yes." Ryou swallowed nervously, then continued, because Seto's silence unnerved him, "I started working on it a while ago, and the first few attempts kinda sucked because I was out of practice. I got some higher quality paints to use on it too, and because I know an art major who owed me a favor, I was able to bake it in a proper kiln. I was afraid that it might not be ready in time—"
"It's beautiful."
"Thank you." Ryou'd never heard Seto so soft-spoken before. He'd heard him whisper, but that was different from this. Even after all the time they'd spent together, the brunette's current expression was one that Ryou'd never seen and he didn't know how to interpret it.
"It reminds me," Seto said slowly after a brief pause, "Of when Mokuba made the Blue-Eyes card for me when I was a kid."
Ryou perked up a little. He'd never heard this story before.
"We'd been here for less than a month, and I already hated it." He traced his index finger over the delicate details of glossy porcelain wings. "He made that card to encourage me, because we weren't allowed to see each other. That's how he saved me, and that was also the day I swore I would own a real Blue-Eyes White Dragon card, since that was my first one. I'm not the type to accumulate objects because of the sentimentality attributed to them, but... I still have it."
"It brings back good memories, I hope," Ryou murmured, tucking one arm under Kaiba's and giving it an affectionate squeeze.
"Indeed it does."
When Kaiba began to set aside the wrappings, Ryou released him and let Kaiba stand, standing up with him. Kaiba carefully set the hand-made, ten-inch painted sculpture of the Blue-Eyes White Dragon on the center of the inset shelf above the fireplace that served as a mantelpiece. It's mouth was open, each of the teeth pointed as it screeched at them, its wings spread behind it as it gripped the rocky crag that formed the base of the statuette. It's eyes caught the light with a brilliant sparkle.
"Are those... real sapphires?"
"I couldn't find or make a shade of blue that could do its eyes justice." Ryou ducked his head bashfully.
"You really shouldn't have—"
"Don't worry about how I got them," Ryou interrupted, trying to put Seto's mind at ease. "The only hard part was setting them in his eyes so that they didn't look out of place."
top ten puppyshipping fics?
so thrilled about this ask...unfortunately i cant give you a list of puppyshipping top 10 without taking like 3 months to reread every joukai fic ive ever loved, but i can give you a handful that ive enjoyed recently!!
Second Chance Christmas by Elexcia (30k)
ex-husbands joey and kaiba are forced to spend the holidays together after 3 years of co-parenting and scrupulously avoiding each other. (atticus and alexis are their kids and its the cutest thing ever!!!!) theres a ton of adorable family shenanigans & how much joey and kaiba work together to ensure atticus and alexis have happy childhoods free from their own personal baggage, mixed with the most heartwrenching late-night conversations between joey and kaiba bc despite everything, they still love each other, but they remember the pain it brought them and don't know if they can endure that again. the emotions and uncertainties are so raw oftentimes i will remember a quote from this fic and my heart will ache all over again its so fcking good!!! its been on my mind ever since i read it!!!
Meeting upon the threshold by Alecto (2.6k)
"kaiba has always been his own worst enemy" -- dsod!kaiba's dimension hopping lands him in an alternate timeline and face-to-face with a version of himself he doesn't recognize. this will always be the quintessential puppyshipping fic to me omg.. the amount of characterization covered in the brief interactions the two kaibas have is spectacular, and its so cool seeing just how different dsod!kaiba's dimension is compared to a dimension where kaiba chooses jounouchi instead. hell yeah
Double Date by thegraeyone (7.2k)
GOD this fic is so funny. kaiba tries so hard to have one normal, business-related work dinner with pegasus, but pegasus is more interested in having a double date between kaiba and his boyfriend joey + pegasus with his boyfriend bandit keith, and like, what else can kaiba do? for the sake of his company, he needs to play along with the most disasterous dinner date of his life if he wants pegasus to sign a damn contract already..!!!! the comedic potential for this specific set of characters makes me lose my mind & theres so many sweet moments within the fic too. i love it so much
Most Thrilling by Alecto (1.8k)
another funny fic! a cute moment with joey visiting his boyfriend kaiba during a lunch break, and silly conversations on how kaiba really does play to win. i love the brand of slight unhinged-ness kaiba has here in regards to jou omg... kaiba is intense when it comes to everything, of course that would include his dating life😭 & i adore how he manages to come across as infuriatingly romantic in his own type of way
The Weight of Water by phant0m (2.2k)
a gentle character piece, jounouchi has just moved out from the apartment he shares with his father, and for all the newfound freedom it should entail, he feels guilty about it more than anything. thankfully his boyfriend kaiba is there to stand by him. it's a kind look into the more somber parts of jou's character and i love the scene it sets :( oh my god jou and kaiba love each other so much..!!! *dies*
Shards by jirluven (2.9k)
more hurt/comfort >:) jounouchi flinches. kaiba isn't supposed to know what it means, its one of the unbroachable topics of their close yet purposely ambiguous relationship, but they both know each other far too well for that. i really enjoy how kaiba's perspective is written, with how he's most comfortable when he's logic-ing things out and surrounded by things he can easily categorize, but hes long given up on trying to categorize jounouchi, and its most evident when pushing himself into the unfamiliar territory of tactfully trying to comfort someone he cares about
Debt to Society by Elexcia (16k)
tech acquisitions lawyer seto kaiba is sentenced to 200 hours of community service after a barfight with rival lawyer & long-time nuisance ziegfried von schroder. to meet those hours, he's assigned to represent children in court as their legal advocate with social worker joey wheeler acting as his supervisor >:) (also featuring judge yugi & the doma arc kids!!) i think this setup is genius omg. with kaiba acting as a protector for underrepresented and vulnerable kids, of course his own personal (and messy) feelings are going to get involved whether he likes it or not!!! plus i love fics where jou and kaiba are colleagues working towards the same goal and moments where kaiba has to trust in and respect joey's skills. and i cant lie. seeing a worldly joey who's good with kids is an absolute treat
Lapse by AndroideQL (4.2k)
blossoming workplace romance!! jou is kaiba's assistant (yes, everyone is surprised about this outcome too) jou & kaiba are undoubtedly attracted to each other, but theres a couple of (important!!) things about it that theyre not entirely on the same page about. the banter and familiarity jou and kaiba have with each other in this fic is sooo charmingly affectionate, and there are several exchanges that make me laugh every single time. its a refreshing and cute fic that has me hopeful knowing that no matter what communication issues they get up to, they'll eventually get their shit straight
Small and Insignificant Things by Lafae (1.6k)
one more for the office romance train >:) joey, kaiba, and the conundrum of getting a good picture for your photo ID. short and sweet boyfriend shennanigans, i love how joey & kaiba play off of each other during these mundane moments between their hectic schedules and i feel like it perfectly captures the excitement of a fresh relationship and fondly discovering the more trivial details about your partner
Working My Way Back to You by SerenaJones (10k)
during an argument between jou and kaiba, jou angrily states that he wishes they never met. kaiba soon finds himself in a universe where they never did, and meets a rougher, more abrasive jounouchi who never quit his gang who just may be the key to his way back. the worldbuilding in this fic is super cool and extensively fleshed out! its so fascinating to experience how different the cast of yugioh and domino city itself would have become if canon had played out differently, and the interactions between kaiba and a jounouchi who isn't his jounouchi but is just charming is so much fun
Orpheus and Eurydice by saiikavon (3.4k)
post-dsod joey dies while chasing kaiba into the afterlife, and by the title, you can probably imagine what kaiba has to do to get him back. very fun kaiba characterization/study here, with how quick and confident he is to challenge death itself and rebuff anything that gets in his way. and! a bit of spoilers but i love when jou gets to be a little mean (lovingly!!!!) to kaiba hehehe
Nothing Builds a Friendship Like a Crisis (part 2)
Tumblr media
Co-written with multifandoms27 Summary: Kaiba hired you to assist Mokuba for one day as Mokuba performed his monthly inspection of the local, Domino City branch of Kaiba Land. You were totally up to the task, until things spiraled out of your control in the worst way possible. Dub canon plus a version of DSOD. Female Reader. Set maybe two years post DSOD. Fun fact: I always write my Reader character with personality and specific description. This means she may not be as generic as is customary for this type of story. Each reader character also has a specific place in the Yu-Gi-Oh world, and is basically an OC with set connections and feelings about the various canon characters and other reader characters. This is reader B, who is immune to the siren song of romance, cheap, eccentric, logical, and hands-on. Word count: 1,495 You can read part 1 here.
Mokuba was dressed for work, wearing a button up shirt, tie, and dress pants. If he were in an office, the choices would have seemed normal, but since the two of you were spending the day in an amusement park, he looked quite out of place. At the moment, Mokuba was talking to each of the attendants working in the arcade, asking them questions, looking at spreadsheets, and trying to gauge how popular the newest game cabinets were. You wore your usual cargo capris, brightly colored socks, and a t-shirt decorated with little images of Scapegoat ringing the ends of the sleeves. Atop your head you wore a baseball cap and sunglasses; you had no intention of being identified in any paparazzi photographs if you could help it—fame seemed like more trouble than it was worth.
Standing around, you eyed the snack bar, wanting one of the neon colored slushies marked as “extremely sour” on the menu board, but simultaneously not wanting to spend your money on overpriced theme park drinks. Men in dark suits and sunglasses loitered around as well—Mokuba’s security detail: Cole, Bishop, and… you couldn’t remember the names of the other two. Eventually, Mokuba finished talking with the employees, and walked back. You helped him sort his notes—asking questions, listening closely to his answers, acting like both of you were adults, even though Mokuba wasn’t one, and you rarely felt like a grownup. The guards did a good job of gently brushing away anyone who tried to approach without permission, as Mokuba finally concluded he was certain all Kaiba Corp regulations and standards were being met in the arcade. It was time for fun. Starting with rhythm games before moving on to dancing games, you and Mokuba had a blast. After working up a bit of a sweat, you leaned against the metal handrail attached to the dancing game, “Why are you so good at this?” Mokuba grinned at you, “Practice.” “Practice? I don’t want to have to practice to get good at games!” You enjoyed joking around with Mokuba, it felt natural, almost like he was your little brother—no, thoughts like that were dangerous. Even if Mokuba had taken a shine to you, there was no way the Kaiba brothers were about to let you into their circle of people they truly trusted and cared about; even Yugi barely managed to make it in, and he was one of the sweetest people in the world. One of the guards, Bishop, approached with a slushy in each hand. You had interacted with him a few times over the past year, and he was always attentive to people’s needs. Gratefully, you took the proffered neon green concoction, surprised at how sour the drink was; you loved tart foods. Beside you, Mokuba chugged down his own pink slushy, giving himself a brain freeze. “Arrrgh, why doesn’t this happen to you?!” You shrugged, “I eat slowly. It has its perks.” The two of you made your way outside, where the bright sunlight and gentle breeze contrasted with the dim, noisy interior of the arcade building. Continuing to sip on your slushy, you wondered if you had somehow overdone it playing dancing games. You did enough cardio workouts in your daily life that it shouldn’t be negatively affecting you like this, but… You forced yourself to keep walking across the park, sipping at your cold drink and trying to act like you felt fine. “Can we go on the new roller coaster now?” Mokuba interrupted your thoughts. “I haven’t had a chance to ride it since it opened two weeks ago.” He turned to face you, “Woah, are you feeling okay?” “Not really.” Talking caused an unexpected spike of nausea. “I think I need to sit down for a minute, but you can go ahead and ride.” What on earth had you done to yourself back there? Mokuba hesitated. “I’ll be fine. You can ride it again with me before we leave.” There was no way you were going to hold Mokuba back, even in such a small matter.
“If you say so.” Mokuba sounded unsure. As though sensing his boss’s uncertainty, Bishop suggested, “We can leave two of the guards with her, in order to make sure Ms. l/n remains undisturbed while we’re on the ride.” Mokuba nodded, “Good suggestion.” He grinned at you, “See ya later.” With Bishop and one of the other guards in tow, the short teen headed for the waiting line.
Smiling wanly at the two remaining security guards, you walked over to a nearby bench, slowly sitting to avoid roiling your stomach further. You watched as Mokuba and Bishop slipped under a velvet rope blocking off the secondary access line to the coaster and made their way to the front. After seeing the two of them start to enter the next available car with the other park goers, you closed your eyes and let your head sink back, glad to be sitting still and resting.
Listening to the people passing by, the soundtrack for the roller coaster line, and the distant screams of riders enjoying themselves, you relaxed. After a few minutes, you began to feel better, which was just as well, since Mokuba was likely to be bounding up any second now. A couple more minutes passed. It was too quiet. Opening your eyes, you realized the roller coaster wasn’t running. Your eyes traced along its brightly colored path; you didn’t see any cars running on the tracks, only empty cars at the loading station, which weren’t being filled. So the previous cars must still be on the tracks, and since you couldn’t see them, it must have been in one of the covered portions. Groaning, you pushed yourself up and made for the ride. With the two guards at your side, it was easy to make it to the front of the line, where a young woman was trying not to panic as she talked into her intercom. Finishing her call, the ride operator covered her face with her hands, “I’m gonna lose my job…” “What’s wrong?” You asked as you approached, eyes scanning over the ride’s control panel as you spoke. Noticing you and the guards, the young woman tried to straighten up, “Oh, uh, one of the magnetic brake systems completely engaged when it wasn’t supposed to, and now the ride is stopped at the top of the second peak.” She pointed to the relevant part of the ride, which was covered by an outer tunnel, hiding the cars from view. “I’m hardly an expert, but that can be caused by a sensor malfunction causing the security protocols to engage, right?” You wished you knew more about how roller coasters worked. The young woman nodded, “That’s right, but if that happens, I should be able to fix it by restarting the system, and it’s not working!”
A rapidly approaching helicopter almost drowned out your next question, “How long before someone gets out here to fix it?”
“A technician should be here in a couple minutes, but I don’t—” the helicopter was too loud now, drowning out the ride operator’s words. It seemed louder than the Kaiba Corp copters you had been near a few times.
Squelching down your unease, you moved to get a better look at the helicopter, which was unmarked. The copter stopped over the place where you knew the roller coaster cars with Mokuba were stuck, and two men jumped out onto the roof of the tunnel. Was this a rescue operation? Turning to yell to the two guards with you, you saw them motioning to one another in a way that made it clear this was not supposed to be happening. At this angle, it was hard to see what the men from the helicopter were doing, but they appeared to pry a panel off of the tunnel and drop down inside.
More black suited men were arriving at the loading platform now, shouting terse commands and code words you recognized from studying the security protocols last night; this was bad.
Some of the guards began to make their way into out-of-bounds maintenance areas, drawing guns from their suit jackets and preparing to climb steep emergency staircases up towards the place Mokuba was trapped. Caught up in watching the security men, you failed to notice what was happening until the ride operator grabbed you and pointed. Three men were rising from the hole in the tunnel, with a bound but struggling Mokuba in tow.
“Mokuba!!” The helicopter drowned out your cry, as the four figures disappeared inside. The roller coaster cars suddenly started moving again, its passengers’ screams becoming audible as the helicopter began to fly away, rapidly disappearing in the distance.
Leaning back against the side of the control panel, you slid to the ground, your knees almost touching your shoulders. “Mokuba…” This time the word was barely audible, your throat tight as tears threatened to spill from your eyes.
so. yami b is the shadow realm soup of zorc and tkb. we see direct evidence of shadow realm soup affecting aigami in dsod. the shadow realm soup affects mani as well, to varying results. it does not affect ryou
thoughts?? is ryou’s immunity due to being the destined host of the ring? did yami b absorb all the shadow realm soupery so it didn’t have anything left to affect ryou with? would experiencing the shadow realm soupery first hand give aigami impetus to eventually forgive ryou? yami b? since he would know first hand what the ring does to people? we know aigams doesn’t want to forgive ryou yet because of duel links, but duel links also is kaiba’s ai playground—would the real aigams still feel like that about ryou?
if he doesn’t, would a forgiveness arc do him any good? an understanding arc? does understanding ryou didn’t do it himself put aigams down the path of freedom? of being free from being consumed by his past trauma? what does healing look like for diva? what does a healing relationship between him and ryou look like?
their first meeting in duel links suggests shared hurt over what transpired when master shin died—and yet diva refuses to forgive ryou. ryou offers the olive branch. does diva take it?
does diva, realistically, take it?
post dsod fic
As the weeks went by i continued to visit Atem and just hang around with him.As the time went by i found myself feeling different twords Atem a good kind of feeling that sent butterflies flying and my heart a flutter. I sighed as i walked into Kiba's offce slumping down into a chair theses feelings were really taking a toll on me. "Whats wrong with you?" Kiba asked looking up from his screen. "mmmph" i said not wanting to respond."Yuugi what's going on?" He asked again. "Atem and I have done a lot of stuff together over like the past month and i'm starting to feel different toward him." I muttered slumping further down into the chair. "And thats so bad how?" He asked crossing his arms over his chest."He's my fried kiba if i'm starting to feel non platonically towards him that'll mess everything up and that's how i've been feeling and a lot of the stuff he says or does effects that as well and it makes it better in a bad way." I said a blush treating to creep onto my face."Look Yuugi i don't really care about any love interests or anything but i can give you advice. Let yourself fall in love and if you know how you feel then tell him don't hide your feelings it'll make things harder for you.So if you go to see him today tell him how you feel." Kiba said giving me a tiny smile.Wow i had no idea kiba would ever say something like that for me. "Thank you For your help Kiba-kun your such a good help." I said smiling. "Don't mention it." He said giving me a small smile as i left his office. ~With Atem~ As i walked into the royal garden i saw Atem sitting there a small flower in his hands. I smiled and joined him. "Oh hello Aibou." He said smiling "Hey." I said giving him a friendly smile.He stuck the flower behind my ear then he cupped my cheek. "You look so adorable." He muttered kissing my cheek making my whole face turn scarlet. "T-thank Y-you." i said smiling making him chuckle. "Oh Aibou your so cute when you blush." EEEK this makes it even harder to say something! I took a deep breath trying to calm my blushing face as quickly as possible. "Hey Atem why do you kiss me everytime i come around or leave?" I started. I don't want to go full blown into my feelings right away i slowly wanted to work up to that. His whole face seemed to loses color. A small dust of pink could be seen on his face. "I-Its a tradtion here in Eygpt its like say hello or goodbye to someone." He said a little shaky. "Is everything alright?" I asked concerned. A shacky sigh escaped his lips. "No… Look Aibou i care for you and respect you so much but thats not all i've noticed things i shouldn't be feeling towards you and its hard to say things that may offend you. Yuugi your my best friend my Aibou but i don't wanna harm out long friendship." What happened to the strong fearless pharoh I know and love? I saw a small tear leave his eye. "When I left I didn't realize what i was leaving behind. When i saw you after the battle with Diva i couldn't have been any happier. You were standing on your own two feet without me and that was truly incredible.Yet I still couldn't bear the fact I wasn't there with you. To be able to love you like you were the only living being in the whole wide world." He said tears flowing down his cheek. I felt like crying as well. I pulled him into a hug "Atem that is the most beautiful and cheesy thing someone ever said to me but you know what? I loved it because I love you too." I said smiling "Really?" He asked looking into my eyes. "really." He kissed my cheek. "I love you Aibou." "And I love you Atem." And we lived happily Ever After ~The End~
this was soo cool to write its only a bit sorry
have an amazing day!
one of my favorite and gayest post-dsod scenarios is Kaiba getting his duel against Atem in the Afterlife. and he actually does it, he beats the Pharaoh and fulfills his life goal. and as the dust of their battle clears, he marches firmly across the field, fire still in his eyes. but Atem is smiling and he looks so damn proud of his rival as he holds out a hand and says "Good game, Kaiba--"
only for Kaiba to wrap an arm firmly around his waist and Atem to his tiptoes as he kisses him with the deepest, most intense passion, bottled up for so many years of denial.
and then Mana comedically slaps a hand over Mahaad's eyes and Set throws up in the background
Hi,
What is your fav headcanon for Jou and Kaiba ? I could like to read about it
thank you and good luck for your day
Hello friend!
(Lol why do I struggle so hard with questions that specifically use the term "headcanons"?)
For Jou, I do fall pretty stalwartly into the "he bleaches his hair blond" camp. Mostly because he's a former delinquent and bleaching your hair is a major anime trope for that kind of character. Funnily enough, I haven't decided what his original hair color actually is. Black is the most straightforward and realistic, but it jars me a bit to see him with completely black hair. But then again, who in YGO actually has realistic hair colors? Jou does look good with the same red-brown seen in human Hermos' character design.
Expanding on that, the Jou's I tend to write/like are also (former) smokers and have an oral fixation. Whether he tops or bottoms, he loves sucking dick and eating pussy hahaha.
As for Kaiba... 🤔 Love seeing Kaiba as a tall twig that Jou could bench press if necessary. He's just so rail thin in the anime no matter how he tries to puff out his silhouette with his costuming. That's not to say he can't be athletic (he's shown as being that in the anime), but it's not in a way that translates to visible bulk to me. (Swimmer Kaiba would have really nice shoulders, though. 😤) Unless it's DSOD!Kaiba, who is built (but also fuck his stupid kneepads).
Please also feel free to share your favorite headcanons about the boys!
In my attempt to do a spoiler-free review...
If I'm being honest... If I could go back in time... I'd tell myself not to watch this anime, which looks crazy since I was freaking out through most of it
Now it ticked lots of boxes before I went into it, but for it to tick even more when the anime already seemed perfect was incredible. So it ticked an extra three boxes. One of the before I watched it moments being that, I literally had only just made a rant about BL and how that label should be removed from animes and like, y'know, let us be surprised if the main character ends up in a same-sex relationship. Don't spoil it with the BL tag. But I'd made the Banana Fish post a month before that rant. I'd listed the Banana Fish genres, already hyped at it being a shoujo, made by a woman, with the delinquent/crime/psychological genres.
1. And so therefore, I did not go into this knowing that... it would end up being a BL. And anyone that tries to deny it was a BL is actually insane. The author could try and tell me this gay as fuck anime wasn't a BL and I wouldn't believe it (whether she has or not idk). Fucking heart emojis coming outta these fuckers eyes whenever they're in the vicinity of each other. I didn't screenshot the majority of it bc I'd too many screenshots. So yeah, this anime basically... did the exact thing I wanted in my rant. It's honestly the weirdest and most perfect timing. Legit shocked at the gay that happened in an anime not labelled as BL. I'm still not over it
2.
Takahiro Kagami was the key animator. The animation director most known for YGO's signature style. YGO at its most beautiful. The guy who created Joey's chin. The animator they called back to animate DSOD and gave Joey his most perfect look
Tumblr media
So I learn just before watching this anime that made me think of Joey in the first place, that Joey's key animator was working on this show? Incredible.
3.
Joey's S!0 VA comes in as our main dudes trainer/mentor, who taught him how to fight and shoot. Like, I been comparing him to Joey the whole time and Joey appears?? What sorcery is this??????
So with the boxes out of the way, I'll list the positives outside of that:
Voice acting was fine, but the MC has risen up the ranks for me and this is my second time hearing him as a main character. Before that he was a side character in animes I barely remember. Actually I just finished Starmyu again and I think he was one of the less memorable characters (ok just checked and yes, also he was a little gay in that, he's always gay that's crazy). But he was fantastic, a scene stealer.
The animation was stunning (as expected). And it being set in New York added so much to that appeal. The action scenes... yes.
And for 24 eps it had a decent pace, I had a few days off so just binged it but took a lot of breaks (even tho it may not look like it lmao).
I had some good ass laughs.
Onto the negatives...
Now... this anime is rated an 8.5 and its very popular.
I rated it a 7.
So I decided on the 8 rating about a third of the way into the anime. It had the potential to be higher but... the anime got sloppy and repetitive. Super repetitive. And it drags, quite a bit. But bc of all the positives, I was like "ah... its going downhill a little but I'll still give it an 8."
Then something happened. And I... just couldn't give it that 8 anymore. What happened infuriated me. There's animes that can do what happened well, and I'll be upset but like, get it. Not in this one. I had to pause and breathe for about 3 mins before pressing play again.
Others may rate this anime low due to how triggering it can get. It didn't trigger me in any way but I can see how it could. The MC goes through a lot. I just wanted to protect him.
But uh, yeah. Due to the thing that happened I'd honestly rather have not watched this show. It kinda erased all the joyous, positive things that happened throughout, in a way. Idk. I need more time to sit on it.
Yeah... idk what else to say. I'm in limbo right now
Stuck in Another Dimension (Part 1)
Word Count: 1,413 words Post Duel Monsters anime. This takes place a few years after the end of the show. Dub continuity plus a version of DSoD. Female reader. Summary: The reader and Kaiba have been accidentally tossed into another dimension. After a series of adventures, they’ve landed in the possession of this dimension’s version of a man Kaiba was hoping to never see again. *** This version of Gozaburo wore a snow white suit. He seemed more at ease than the ones you had met in the past, but even a child could read the predatory gleam in his eyes. “So you two are accidental travelers from another dimension, hmm? It sounds like you might be of some use to me, Seto.”
“I’ll never help you.”
“Do I allow you to talk to me this way back in your home dimension?”
“You don’t allow anything, old man. Where I come from, you’re gone.”
“Gone? I’m surprised you can function without a strong hand to guide you, Seto.”
It had been a very long day, and your frustration overcame Kaiba’s instructions to leave the talking to him, “Kaiba’s stronger than you ever were—he outmaneuvered you back when he was just a teenager! All you managed to do was mess up a good kid and then off yourself when he bested you and took over Kaiba Corp.” You avoided looking over at Kaiba as you took a deep breath, “So quit acting so superior and deal with him as your equal.”
“Seto, are you in the habit of permitting your woman to interrupt important negotiations?”
“No.”
You bristled at the phrase “your woman,” but already regretted your outburst enough to keep quiet and avoid a second one.
“Which is one of the reasons” Kaiba continued coldly, “I requested you leave her with the petty criminals in Satellite until the conclusion of our business.”
“And here I thought you were nobly trying to protect your lover.”
“I’ve never been a fool who wasted my time with romance. She’s my assistant.”
“Then you no longer have any use for her. My Seto will be able to provide you with any assistance you may require.”
“I told you, I won’t—”
“Roland?” Gozaburo interrupted, “Take the young woman out to the courtyard and have her shot.”
“What?!”
“Now now, Seto, giving yourself away when faced with an obvious ploy like this? You do have an emotional investment in the girl.” Gozaburo turned to you, “What are you to him? Be honest.”
“We’re friends.”
“Lovers always say they’re friends.”
You glared. “Yes, well, if you know Kaiba at all then I think you know we’re not. But thanks to you, what should have been a simple friendship took years to acknowledge.”
“Nevertheless, tell me about your relationship without trite words like ‘friends.’”
“I’m…He trusts me.”
“Go on.”
“Uh. We’ve been through a lot. We’ve worked well together. And we’ve…”
“Yes?”
“At this point Kaiba’s realized I may be the only person who will neither fall in love with him nor leave him behind. Frankly, it’s a quality I appreciate in him as well.”
“Anything else?”
You hated this, “He gives me freedom, and I give him…whatever the heck it is that makes people like being friends with me.” You shrugged.
“You’re friends?” Gozaburo asked.
You glared and nodded.
“Now that is interesting; friendship is a relationship of equals—souls standing shoulder-to-shoulder and facing life together. It’s a powerful force.” Kaiba looked surprised to hear Gozaburo talking like this. “That being said, I don’t tolerate anyone acting above their station. And however Seto may view you, you’re not at my level, and I do not allow underlings emotional outbursts during business dealings.”
“But—”
“Don’t worry. Pawns are useful, and I’m not in the habit of destroying what I can use.” Gozaburo looked past you. “Roland, fit them with a pair of collars.”
“Very good sir. And shall I have them sent Underground?”
You could hear a man walking up behind you as Gozaburo said, “ Not yet.” You flinched as the man pulled aside your hair and clamped a metal band around your neck. Raising your manacled hands, you tugged at the item experimentally. Immediately, a shock of pain coursed through you. A moment later, when the pain ended, you were panting on your knees, glad to have stopped screaming, disoriented, afraid.
Kaiba was still on his feet, barely. “Whatever you did, don’t do it again.”
“Right.” You mentally kicked yourself for tugging on the stupid thing, of course it would be designed to prevent removal. And although your memory of the moment was hazy, you were pretty sure your actions had triggered Kaiba’s collar as well.
“Is there anything I can invent you won’t steal and misuse?” asked Kaiba as you shakily stood.
“How perceptive, Seto. These shock collars are an invention of your counterpart.”
“So you’ve got access to a contactless neural interface. What do you need us for again?” You suspected you wouldn’t like the answer.
Gozaburo appeared to see you in a new light, “You could recognize the technology after only one use?”
You kept quiet.
“I asked you a question!”
“Yeah, of course. It’s the primitive version of the neural interface we use in our Adventure System.”
“Which is?”
You wanted to be out of the spotlight, “An escape game system which combines Solid Vision with a neural interface to create an immersive experience for the player. Obviously our technology is much more advanced than yours, but I remember the earlier prototype stages well enough to recognize the sensation.”
“I’ve always assumed Seto’s obsession with games developed as a coping mechanism to deal with his separation from Mokuba. But perhaps you’re simply fated to waste your potential on frivolity.”
“Mokuba?” You could hear the change in Kaiba’s voice.
“Oh, don’t worry, you’ll be spending a great deal of time with your brother’s counterpart.” Gozaburo walked back to his desk and pushed a button on his intercom, “Seto, come to my study.”
You raised your manacled hands.
Gozaburo smiled, “Ask your question.”
“What exactly are you planning to do with us?”
“She’s rather direct, Seto. But then, you’ve never had much subtlety either.” Gozaburo turned back to you, “Seto will be sent underground, where he will work in a labor facility until I send for him.”
“I’m not working for you,” Kaiba interjected.
“Oh, Seto, I think breaking your spirit will be much more fun this time around.” Gozaburo smiled and placed his hand over his wristwatch.
Your eyes widened in realization, and then you were yelling in pain, dropping to one knee, yanking desperately at your collar in a mindless effort to remove it. When it was over, you could see Kaiba in a similar pose. For a moment, it was all you could do to fight off a wave of dizziness, “What about me?”
“My Seto has his birthday in a few days. You will be my gift to him. A reward well earned.”
“Oh?” You weren’t in the right frame of mind to respond intelligently.
“He’s never had a slave of his own before. I wonder how he’ll put you to use?”
“Wait,” Your mind finally cleared, “you’re splitting us up?”
“Indeed, although with these collars your lives will continue to affect one another. I find it rather poetic.”
“I hate you.”
“No doubt you do. But if you want to say your goodbyes, you should reorder your priorities.”
Kaiba sneered, “If you think you can hold either of us for long, you’re delusional.”
“You have spirit, Seto. But how long can it last?”
“Kaiba…” You weren’t sure what to say.
“Same rules as always?” he asked.
“Yeah. Of course. Do what needs to be done. But…if we could limit your rebellion to the bare minimum, that would be good.” You forced a small smile, “The pain settings on these collars are really high.”
“You can take it.”
“Yeah, but I’d prefer not to.”
“Hmh.”
“You're rather different than I expected,” observed Gozaburo.
“Shut up, old man.” Kaiba turned back to you, and his eyes softened a smidge, “I forgot; this is your greatest—”
“Don’t,” you tilted your head towards Gozaburo.
Large men grabbed Kaiba and pulled him to his feet. “If my duplicate gives you any trouble, don’t hesitate to make him suffer.”
“Sure.”
“You’ll pay for this, Gozaburo!” Kaiba shouted his last words before the men dragged him out of the room.
“Now,” Gozaburo loomed over you, “I believe we still have the small matter of your outburst to settle.”
“You’ve made your point abundantly clear, there’s no need to make it again.” You tried not to sound panicked.
“Without consistency, rules are useless.”
You tried to keep from crying out when the pain came, but couldn’t. You could hear Gozaburo chuckling over your anguish, and then your vision blurred, narrowed, and faded to darkness as you passed out. Part 2
Ryo for the meme?
So sorry for the delay on this one! I kept having issues with my draft not saving and needing to start over.
I sincerely think Ryou was my first favorite character from Yugioh, even before Kaiba, if you can believe it.
1. Why do you like or dislike this character?
When I was first introduced to Yugioh, what struck me about him and made me latch onto him was the obvious emotional pain. At the time I was just starting to figure out my own depression and anxiety that my family was oblivious to, and I think I just related to that lack of support. I guess this is the answer for Question 25.
2. Favorite canon thing about this character?
How excited her gets about food, actually. He and Joey are probably almost equally enthusiastic about it, and it's adorable.
3. Least favorite canon thing about this character?
How they changed his dad in DSOD. I preferred it when the dad was an oblivious nerd just trying to give his son a cool gift instead of being a power-hungry weirdo.
4. If you could put this character in any other media, be it a book, a movie, anything, what would you put them in?
This probably sounds silly, but I want him living his best life in a Pokemon game with a team that he's bonded to, getting to live an RPG adventure just like Monster World, but a little bit safer. I want him taking a nap leaning on his Altaria with an Absol curled up at his feet, looking like it's asleep but keep watching. And don't forget his floaty little Shuppets hovering about.
5. What's the first song that comes to mind when you think about them?
Friend of Foe by t.A.T.u. because I watched so many AMVs at the time that I was introduced to Yugioh. The song captures his poignant and desperate confusion with his own life and identity.
6. What's something you have in common with this character?
Honestly, aside from Question 1, nothing specific comes to mind aside from general nerdiness. I used to have a bad sweet tooth, like I imagine he does, but not so much anymore.
7. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you like?
Making him a sweet spooky boi with 27 tarot card decks at home that dresses like he's going to bible study. Also, a big one is giving him visible scars from all the stuff Y B has put him through: the arm, the left hand, the chest.
8. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you despise?
I wouldn't say despise. Not sure I'd say I dislike anything the fandom does with him too much
9. Could you be roommates with this character?
I imagine he's a night owl, so as long as he keeps things quiet at night, we wouldn't have a problem.
10. Could you be best friends with this character?
Definitely! We could probably introvert in the room together, doing our own things, or chat about art.
11. Would you date this character?
Again, I'm married, but if I had the chance and Y B was gone for good, absolutely.
12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?
I've actually always headcanoned that Ryou had a Catholic mom and she tried to pass on her faith to him, but it didn't fully stick, necessarily. This isn't from nowhere, I swear. In the church scene in season five, in the English dub, Ryou goes into the church saying "I should be safe in here" after running from a disembodied voice. I think that means that he must have some small level of faith if he thinks the church itself will ward off the evil.
13. What's an emoji, an emoticon and/or any symbol that reminds you of this character or you think the character would use a lot?
🥰👀🙏🤷‍♀️🤔
14. Assign a fashion aesthetic to this character.
Galaxy Goth - Give him star earrings and glittery platform boots. Give him galaxy print leggings and an illusion neckline shirt with sheer/lacy sleeves. 👌👌👌👌👌✨✨✨✨✨✨ Hell, make it femboy too, he could rock that so hard. Make it pastel galaxy goth, it works just as well. Dress this boy up.
15. What's your favorite ship for this character? (Doesn't matter if it's canon or not.)
You know I can't ever just pick one ship. I'm a multishipper. It's never just one.
Euroshipping, Minorshipping, and Puffshipping are my top three.
Mumbleshipping, Rollshipping, and Teaseshipping are my top poly ships for him.
Honorable mention to Graceshipping, cause I think he and Ishizu could be so damn sweet together, and that's my #1 straight ship for him.
16. What's your least favorite ship for this character?
Tendershipping, actually. I don't hate on it or people who like it, and I have a soft spot for some of his ships, but I just can't see Yami Bakura the way a lot of the fandom sees him, and that's where it comes from. I don't wanna get into it because this isn't a Y B post. I'll just leave it at that. No hate here, just a different perspective.
17. What's a ship for this character you don't hate but it's not your favorite that you're fine with?
Deathshipping. I can appreciate some of the art and some of the sillier conceptions of this ship, but I'm not personally into it.
18. How about a relationship they have in canon with another character that you admire?
I haven't read the manga, but I've seen enough moments from it of Ryou and Joey together (included what looked like stealing a camel together), and their bond in DSOD was too adorable. It made me so happy to finally see somebody standing up for Ryou.
19. How about a relationship they have in canon that you don't like?
Obviously I wish he didn't get so roughed up by Y B.
20. Which other character is the ideal best friend for this character, the amount of screentime they share doesn't matter?
Normally I'd leave ship characters out of it, but I can't help it: Ishizu, Joey, and Duke are my top picks here.
21. If you're a fic writer and have written for this character, what's your favorite thing to do when you're writing for this character? What's something you don't like?
I play around with different versions of what's Ryou's mentality can be like after Bakura is gone and what the lasting impact is. There's a lot of options there, which is why I don't write just one version of Ryou.
22. If you're a fic reader, what's something you like in fics when it comes to this character? Something you don't like?
There's a lot of things that people do with him. I love when people flesh out his relationship with his family and
23. Favorite picture of this character?
EVERY PICTURE HE IS PRECIOUS
But him with the banana.
Tumblr media
24. What other character from another fandom of yours that reminds you of them?
Okay, gonna try to stick to canon personality with this.
From Touken Ranbu, Nikkari Aoe. He seems sweet and normal on the surface, and then he'll suddenly say the weirdest occult crap to you with the most normal smile and you just want to back away slowly. And then you realize, oh dear this man's a weirdo. An absolute weirdo. (He's the one that can see ghosts after all, there's a real connection over that.) (He gets two gifs because you need to understand what a weirdo he is.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
From UtaPri, we've got Shion from Heavens. He's a quiet shy boy on the surface with soulful eyes, but still waters run deep. I feel like they're both easy to underestimate.
Tumblr media
And from Nanbaka, I can't really explain why, I always associated him with Seitarou Tanabata. Maybe because they share the spiky Christmas tree hair, idk. Maybe I just think they'd be good friends.
Tumblr media
25. What was your first impression of this character? How about now?
See Question 1.
26. FREEBIE QUESTION!!
This boy is helpless in the kitchen. He's gonna have to count on his partner to either cook for him or teach him how to cookl
To Old Friends, To the Future
Summary: Seto invites Yugi over for dinner again. They had both been quite busy with their own projects as of late but had finally found a moment quiet moment between it all. However, unfortunately, Seto chose a bit of an awkward day on the calendar to do so. But this is good, they get a chance to speak of old friends and feelings.
Words: 2,255
Characters: Seto Kaiba, Yugi Mutou
Tags/warnings: Rivalshipping, Post-DSoD, social drinking, dinner date and talking
There was a bit of a breeze as Seto set the table out on the patio. Mokuba loved using it for dinner, Seto less so. But tonight the weather was nice and he’d invited Yugi over, so he figured it’d be nice to do something different for once.
“I’m back!” was hollered from the entrance.
Yugi kicked his shoes off at the genkan and stepped up into the apartment in one neat motion.
Well, “apartment” was a loose term. Seto and Mokuba owned the unit but it wasn’t its own building. Seto didn’t like waste so they had downsized, but it still cost more than Yugi’s life savings so far!
“Impeccable timing, it’s almost done, you doing this so you can get out of helping?”
He was joking, of course. Yugi how he is always offered to lend a hand. And Yugi knew Seto wasn’t serious even if his tone of voice was flat and as stoic sounding as ever.
“Ah, of course. You know I’m just sooo lazy and like to have you pamper me,” Yugi replies with a snort.
“Smells good, what is it?” he asked stepping up to the stove but quickly moving out of the way as Seto returned to it to make sure their dinner didn’t burn. He’s no expert chef, but he can follow a recipe fine so long as it was written out in detail. Often people assumed he didn’t know how to cook, but in reality Seto had learned at a young age how to do simple meals when helping raise Mokuba within a single-parent household. His skills grew from there.
“Halibut. Fish. You’ve ever tried it?”
“I have in sushi.”
“Well, this is quite different. Go take a seat outside, I’ll be there in a second.”
Yugi did as he was told and noticed a few saké bottles set out on the table.
“Ooh, fancy night,” he teased when Seto brought over their plates. “Sweet or bitter?” he asked as he looked over the labels.
Tonkatsu Dinner with Joey Wheeler
Tumblr media
Summary: You and Joey Wheeler eat dinner together in Shinjuku ward. Set post DSOD. Fun fact: I always write my Reader character based off of myself or someone I know. This means she may not be as generic as is customary for this type of story. Each reader also has a specific place in the Yu-Gi-Oh world, and is basically an OC with set connections and feelings about the various canon characters and other reader characters. This is reader V, who is dating Joey Wheeler and acting as his manager. She is a bit anxious. Word count: 1879 “How about dis place?” asked Joey, looking at the detailed plastic food in the picture window of a restaurant. You were looking at the signage with your smartphone, trying to translate. “Okay, so these are tonkatsu, and these are curry, and they also serve something called ‘shabu shabu?’” “I thought your phone was gonna translate for ya?” Joey still used a flip phone, so he liked to find instances when your smartphone failed to do what you wanted it to.
“It did for the other foods,” You stepped closer to your boyfriend, brushing up against him. Behind you, people continued to walk past on the sidewalk. Despite being after nine at night, the Shinjuku ward of Tokyo still bustled with people. “I know what curry is, da other two...” “Tonkatsu is the breaded pork with cabbage,” you pointed at the plates, “but I don’t know what shabu shabu is. This sign talks about it, but there’s not a display version.” Shoving your phone in your pocket, you joined Joey in studying the fake food. “I know my mom recommended we try tonkatsu.”
“Your mom’s a great cook, so if she says it’ll be good, den we gotta try it.” Joey reached for the door, “Ya down?” “Sure!” You figured there wasn’t much chance of disliking breaded pork. Inside, abundant wooden paneling gave the place an old-fashioned Japanese feel. Each of the tables had a dark glass cooktop built into the center. Seeing your arrival, the man behind the register said something in Japanese. Joey held up two fingers, and the man nodded, stepping away from the counter to point the two of you to a table tucked in a corner. You sat in the chair, and Joey slid onto the bench across from you, grabbing the tablet from its holder at the end of the table. “Dis should make things easier.” Slightly jealous Joey had beaten you to the electric menu and ordering device, you pulled out your phone again and grabbed the Japanese menu. Why was the restaurant so cold? Glancing up, you saw you were directly underneath an air conditioning vent. “Could we switch places?” You gestured at the vent.
Joey grinned. “Leave it ta me ta date da coldest girl in Domino.” He was already sliding off the padded bench as he finished. After switching places, you both fell silent, each studying the menu. Choosing a meal set with tonkatsu, cabbage, rice and miso soup, you waited for Joey to make up his mind about what he wanted. Beside the docking station for the tablet was a brown, ceramic kettle-ish container with a Japanese label taped onto the lid. Translating it, you discovered it held tonkatsu sauce—information you passed on to Joey but had no intention of using yourself, you never put sauce on your food. The man who greeted you at the door returned to the table bearing two glasses of water, small white towels, and chopsticks for each of you. “I guess dese are da napkins?” Asked Joey after the man left. You shrugged, “I guess. Now focus on what you want to order.” “It all looks so good, y/n.” After Joey finally decided to get a combination curry and tonkatsu meal, he input your order into the tablet. A group of five or six people who looked to be about your age entered the restaurant, happily chatting among themselves as they were seated at the larger table beside yours. It soon became apparent they had ordered the mysterious shabu shabu, which turned out to be some sort of meat and vegetable hot pot dish which was cooked right at the table. It looked fun. Although the meat and broth smelled delicious, you felt little interest in eating that many vegetables, and the extremely long, skinny, mushrooms were right out. Joey couldn’t take his eyes off the food at the next table, which made sense since neither of you had eaten since the morning.
You reached out and placed your hand over his, trying to enjoy the moment instead of focusing on the fact your food hadn’t arrived yet. It kinda worked.
Ripping his gaze back to his date, Joey smiled at you sheepishly. “If some of those K-Pop shops are still open when we’re finished here, ya wanna check one out?”
You felt torn, while you were here in the Korean section of Tokyo, you did want to pick up a few pictures of your favorite idol, but doing it with your boyfriend felt like a weird idea. Still… Joey was the one who brought it up, so maybe it would be okay? Seeing your hesitation, Joey tilted his head, “Ya still like Stray Kids, don’tcha?”
Time to play it off like you were confident, “Oh yeah. If Chan were to ask me out, I think I would have to break up with you.” You were joking, obviously.
“He’s the hot Australian?” Joey asked.
“Yeah.” You couldn’t hide your surprise. “I can’t believe you remember that.”
“After all da time you’ve spent listening ta me talk about Duel Monsters, rememberin’ a few facts about your favorite boy band ain’t askin’ too much of me.”
Before you could respond, the employee who had greeted you when you entered approached with your food. For a moment, neither of you thought about anything other than eating. Tantalizing scents rose in the air—the savory smell of curry, a mouthwatering whiff of pork, and a subtle undertone of oil. Your mouth watered.
Nervously, you picked up your chopsticks, afraid you would mess up and embarrass yourself in front of Joey. Despite your practice, you still weren't as confident as you wanted to be; it didn’t help that you were left handed, which always meant fewer online tutorials to watch, and your older sister who taught you was right handed. Gripped with determination, you glanced at Joey, who was far too busy eating to pay attention to you. If you weren't careful, your anxiety would get out of control and steal your appetite; Joey was on the short list of people you felt so comfortable with you could eat around him, and you would hate to lose that.
Focusing on your tonkatsu, you noticed the breading was different from what you expected. Instead of breadcrumbs, these were more like bread-shards—long and thin, which gave the surface a rough, almost spiked, texture. Raising one of the tonkatsu strips with your chopsticks, you took a bite. The breading was crispy. The pork was tender. Delicious.
For the moment, your nerves settled, and you settled into your meal. After a few moments of silent focus on food, you began to get curious about Joey’s dinner. “Could I try a bite of your curry?”
Joey looked up with puppy dog eyes, “You’d ask for part of a man’s dinner?”
“Only if I want to try it.” you gazed back with your own innocent, wide-eyed stare.
Joey’s face broke into a grin, “Yeah, dat checks out.” He licked his metal spoon clean, wiped it with a napkin, refilled it with curry and rice, and extended the handle to you.
“Thanks,” you grinned and took the spoon. Popping the curry into your mouth, you immediately regretted it. It looked like a kind of beef stew, so why was it spicy?? You almost spit it out, but that seemed gross to do in front of your boyfriend, so you gulped it down instead. “You know I don’t like spicy food, Joey!” You grabbed your small glass of water.
Joey was still grinning at you, “You were da one who asked for it. Who am I ta fight paying da girlfriend tax?”
“Okay, okay, maybe I’m slightly at fault here. But my pain and suffering is mostly your fault.” You grinned back, taking another gulp. “Can you order more water?”
Joey fussed with the tablet for a minute, “Ehh, not with dis thing.”
“That’s okay, I’ll just drink yours.”
“Dat’s fair.” Joey slid his glass towards you. “But ya shoulda known dat curry is spicy.”
“I knew some curry is spicy, and I thought you’d tell me if yours was too much for me.” You fake huffed at him.
“Sorry.” Joey was eyeing your side dishes of rice and miso soup hungrily. “How ‘bout ya let me make it up to ya?”
“By eating my food?”
“What? Oh.” He looked you in the eyes, “I got ya a little gift.”
Your eyes crinkled into a surprised smile, “You got me a present?”
“It’s not much, and I’m not sure you’re gonna like it,” he pulled his hands into his lap, “and I was gonna give it to ya tomorrow before my TV interview, but den I thought I could give it to ya now instead…”
You leaned in, “Sure! Let me see it.” You knew he had bought a couple things at one of the stores the two of you went into earlier, but never imagined he had bought anything for you.
Pulling his hands out from underneath the table, he handed you a beautifully wrapped gift box. It was light and rectangular. “The lady at da store did a great job makin’ it look pretty when I told her it was a present.”
Overwhelmed with curiosity, you tore off the paper, revealing a clear plastic box with a large white bow inside it. It was similar to your favorite hair bow, except this one had a blue, horned sheep in the center of the bow. “Aw, it’s one of the Scapegoats.” Scapegoat was one of Joey’s rarest cards, and your favorite part of his deck.
“I know ya don’t like Duel Monsters all dat much, so if ya don’t like it, I understand. But since you’re my manager, I thought it would be cute if ya had something’ with one of my cards on it.”
Joey was irresistibly endearing when he got flustered like this. You reached out and took his hands. “There are a lot of monsters from the game I would never wear, but this little guy is adorable. And you’re right, as your manager I should wear something related to your deck; it’s good for branding.”
“Ya don’t have ta like it, y/n. If ya don’t want ta wear it den—”
“Sorry, Joey, I was messing with you.” You squeezed his hands, “I don’t just like it because it’s good for your brand. I think it’s cute, and it reminds me of you, and it even shows you remembered what I like. Thank you.”
“Are ya sure?”
“Yep. I’ll wear it tomorrow.” You nodded at him in approval before pulling your hands away and resuming eating.
When you both finished, Joey took the receipt left with the food to the register, where he paid in cash, pocketing the handful of coins he received in return. As the two of you stepped out into the warm summer night, you slipped your hand into his. Tonight would be fun, with K-pop shopping and trying out a capsule hotel. It was easy to set aside your worries when you were with Joey. Tomorrow you would both have work to do, but for now, all you wanted was to spend time with the man who made you feel special and safe. “You’re the best, Joey.” If you google the following, you should be able to see the Google listing for the restaurant this story was set in. "とんかつしゃぶしゃぶにいむら 大久保店"
