i saw this post about probending zuko and got swept up in the euphoria of planning a zukka probending au before remembering sokka doesn't bend.
so anyway. pro bending sokka where he gets high on cactus juice and gets in an argument with katara and registers himself as a jerkbender, saying "i (hic) totally (hic) bet you i can beat all of you in pro bending tournament" and signs up high off his ass
he wakes up in the morning with Regret. But is too stubborn and arrogant to back down. so he goes. after all, he fights benders all the time, right? (he realizes one mistake when he's not allowed to bring weapons into the ring and is plopped into the arena completely defenseless)
he manages to beat the first few in a combination of smarts and dump luck. And yeah he gets bruised a lot but there's no way he's going to let katara say "i told you so" This is now for non benders Everywhere, okay?
and so he gets better about using the arena and the benders' strengths against them and his plans and he gets into further and further along. And maybe he spars and practices with Zuko because they're on opposite ends of the bracket and haven't fought each other yet. And Sokka always beats Zuko in swords but now the tables are turned, and how the hell is he going to beat Zuko at probending when he can't even take his eyes off his crush to spar?

Aang mastered waterbending off screen. Shocker
Pakku still goes off and marries Kanna in the south pole but we don't get an explanation as to why
Katara doesn't get special healing water from the spirit oasis, instead she gets mary sue'd in becoming the most powerful healer alive capable of bringing back the dead and then for some reason that capability never comes back again
Aang murders general Fong on screen while in the Avatar state
General Fong is also played by Daniel Dae Kim but with a different beard and wig
Suki immediately joins the gaang
Appa never gets kidnapped
Serpent's pass, the swamp, the chase and the drill all get skipped (or drastically shortened), but Avatar Day is gonna get included bc these writers have a bias for Kyoshi

And now I’m truly going off the rails bc of last asker but I have thought about what plant fits who and it’s my time to shine…
Mithrun is a succulent because they look like flowers but aren’t (tougher and also kind of duller), are elegant yet minimalist, and they’re low maintenance (you could definitely argue that Mithrun is high maintenance instead but I went the opposite route of him never feeling like he needs much water, attention and whatnot). I prefer the classic one that’s a pale greyish green for him but there are so many that are neat…
Kabru as a big floating bladderwort… A carnivorous aquatic plant that traps little aquatic critters. If you just look at the flower it looks so pretty and harmless, distracts from the roots scheming murder… Also it’s an aquatic plant, gives me the vibe of something surviving/thriving in an environment that shouldn’t be theirs but they’ve adapted, like a tallman in elf society…..
I also associate him a ton with himalayan blue poppies, for obvious reasons. Insane that the shade of blue of his eyes is associated with the throat chakra btw, Kui’s always doing 8d chess my god.
For Izutsumi, Faassen's Catmint. It's a species of catnip but a man-made hybrid and not a natural species. It kind of looks like a long puffy cat tail with the shape, and it has a lot of little flowers… Kind of subtle/bland and unassuming at first look, but colorful and sweet if you take the time to look. Feels sort of vulnerable/or even cold at first but like they’re just looking out for themselves even if they are not someone unemotional….. It makes sense to me. Babygirl. Purple is an unexpected choice for her but it feels right
Chilchuck echinopsis calochlora or golden barrel cactus… The first one is smaller, but I was trying to find the perfect lil cactus guy with orange spines and couldn’t really find any that was just perfect. Chilchuck "I am so approachable" Tims, literally round and spiny with his little hairs but also metaphorically fitting… Also the gooden barrel cactus has a bunch of lil yellow flowers that sprout on its top while the calochlora has HUGE stalks with a big white flower that sprouts so like, if you want to take that to be his big heart once he reveals it or the little flowers of his care……
Falin is the funky living rocks plant. They have cryptid energy and are just so weird and colorful and unique. A little unfeeling. Sad that she doesn’t get a plant that’s fun to eat but come on.
I feel like Laios would also be a cactus, with maybe juice that has funky properties kind of like peyote… He’s reserved and [spoilers], but he either has no spines or small/few spines so he doesn’t look all that uninviting or tough… Probably has very pretty colorful flowers! Or he’s like Falin and loves dandelions and bishop’s lace because he can eat it. Or maybe he’d be a vegetable. Sweet potato… Someone said carnivorous plant to which I suggest pitcher plant or sarracenia.
I see Senshi as basil. Enough said. Something that can be turned into spices and is all greenery that’s all I need

Urzai adopts the Gaang AU
More ideas for this AU because the thread was getting too long.
The main story takes place over 3 years; 1 year for each season.
Urzai didn't really know how to relate to the Fire sibling in their care bc they didn't spend much time with them. For example, Ursa gets Azula a Fire Nation doll thinking she just hated the EK one but Azula still burns it. And Ozai gets Zuko some firebending scrolls because that the only thing he saw Zuko reading at the palace. But Zuko thinks Ozai’s telling him that his bending still sucks and gets even more depressed. Likewise Zuko and Azula kept asking about the other parent the first couple of months. Things were pretty rough but they eventually work it out. Azula and Ursa bond over sparing and herbology and Ozai and Zuko over criticizing reviewing street plays.
Ozai feels guilty for Zuko scar since Zuko took the hit meant for him. Also because Ozai didn't know how to treat it properly so he thinks the scarring could have been prevented. Of course, Ozai has no idea how to express this to Zuko so he thinks Ozai’s ashamed of his weakness. This doesn't get resolved until after The Boiling Rock when they finally have a heart to heart.
The family unlearn the FN propaganda while hiding amongst the villages. Witness and experience first hand that the FN is not spreading prosperity through the nations. Just the opposite actually.
Azula's 1st friend (who wasn't required to play with her like Mai and Ty Lee) was Suki. While Ursa was in Kyoshi Warrior training, the two would rough house. Suki wasn't afraid to shove the young ex-princess back. Azula was annoyed at first but grew to enjoy the rivalry. (Sokka and Suki never hears the end of it when Azula finds out they like each other)
Iroh gives Lu Ten a cushy job to keep him safe but Lu Ten wants to redeem himself. Sets off on a self appointed mission to track down his ex-family and recuse his cousins. Jee goes with him and reteaches him firebending for battle.
Ozai and Ursa keep barely missing each other during Book 2. What's even more aggravating is they have no idea.
The Fire Family being back together after 6 years apart was awkward at first. Not until the Gaang each found an excuse to leave them alone did they finally hash things out and get back into the swing of things.
Ursa and Katara get into a big fight when Katara trains with Hama. Ursa doesn't trust her but Katara really wants to learn SWT waterbending and thinks Ursa’s holding her back. Katara yells at Ursa to stop telling her what to do and she's not actually her mom. Which was very traumatic for both of them but they make up at end after Katara stops Hama from trying to kill Ursa.
Urzai stay behind with the other adults during DOTBS. Ursa is taken to FN palace dungeon and Ozai and Hakoda to The Boiling Rock. Meanwhile Lu Ten talks to Ursa in the dungeons and learns the truth about the coup. He confronts Iroh but Iroh tries to arrest him for "his own protection". Lu Ten escapes and sets off to find the Gaang.
Iroh plans to execute Ursa and use Sozin’s Comet to wipe out BSS. Reference to "If we don't burn it down first" in his letter. The gaang go to stop Iroh and free Ursa. Ozai fights Iroh as they waited for Aang’s return.
Fun ideas:
Katara, Azula, and Toph’s girls night out as they rob from rich FN ppl and blow up factories.
Many "that's not what they did 100 years ago Aang we think your friend was messing with you" conversations
Appa has final authority over everyone.
A family that fights together stays together TM
The Gaang out voted Urzai for Aang’s secret dance party. Urzai has to wear disguises bc they can't leave the kids alone after the incident (accidently got high off cactus juice)
Ozai: Why did you shove your boomerang into the beard???
Sokka: To give it character.
Ursa: At least you don't have a pillow stuffed down your shirt.
Ozai and Hakoda bond in The Boiling Rock. (Nothing says fun bonding experience like doing time in a cruel abusive prison full of ppl who want to kill you)
Suki assumes Sokka's from a community compound like Kyoshi Island and doesn't question the multiple parents arrangement. (The more the merrier! It takes a community after all)
Lu Ten is very confused. He thought he had 2 little cousins not 6.

How i feel about the a:tla characters for no reason in particular
Aang: kid with waaaaayyyyy too much on his shoulders. Almost definitely needs therapy later in life.
Katara: team mom
Sokka: the competent one who makes everything happen. He's the idea guy, the one with the map and the schedule, who keeps everyone on track. Also boomerang.
Toph: me
Zuko: best redemption arc in TV history. A+ to the writers. Whiny teen at the beginning, and one of the best gaang members at the end of the show.
Iroh: I love him. I want to see his own redemption. All we know is that he was a general known as the Dragon of the West until his son Lu Ten died at Ba Sing Se. How did he become the Uncle we know and love? Did he get banished with Zuko or choose to leave? I personally like to think he chose to leave, to set his nephew in the right path.
Azula: she needs therapy and to not be enabled by her terrible dad
Ozai: terrible dad. Terrible husband if you read the comics. Terrible.
Mai: i would like to see more development from her
Ty Lee: also more development
Suki: girl power!
Appa: big ol fluffbucket. Ages ago when my family got into the show my dad got an Appa plushie. Now we have an officially licensed pillow pet of him.
Momo: occasionally cute or funny, like when he got high on cactus juice with sokka

Probably not the best first impression you're making on Strong Jawline With Shades there, Simone.
Simone aged up kind of goofy looking (genetics, why are you so cursed for masc Sims?) and I made him look more like a normal guy. So my idea for him was that of a nerd whose famous dad was the 'norm' to him and he could only understand on an intellectual level what the big fuss was about? His mom's everything and Thorne's Just Ken. Plus, yanno, raised by a single mother who created her own nectar empire out of nothing - even if sexism were a thing in the Simsverse, he'd be downing that Respect Women cactus juice by the gallon. (Nothing else will quench ya! It's the quenchiest!)
strangerville story spoilers
And so with some of his growing up bonus traits (TOP NOTCH TODDLER plus HEADSTRONG more specifically - also GOOD MANNERS which helped him introduce himself nicely to all the right people*) and his stereotypically geeky interests, I unintentionally created the near perfect hero for the Strangerville storyline. With that perk to skill building, he's already nearly maxed out PROGRAMMING, LOGIC and HANDINESS - and fortunately I'd sent him on enough jogs while waiting for the Possession Hour to hit to give him some FITNESS to impress the military personnel from whom he needed to grab a keycard.
Was Thorne Bailey's lovechild becoming the Strangerville hero the twist that we all saw? Maybe not, but it was the one I surprisingly needed xD
Plus also getting this doofus to eat the strange fruit (high intelligence, low wisdom much?) ended up actually working for us because of how the Possession Hour replenished his needs. Also do we really want to defeat MOTHER? Being possessed between 1 and 4 am where I run around like a headless llama but basically am otherwise harmless only to end up fully refreshed? Sign me up. The MOTHER is the Strangerville hero in our hearts.
I still need to complete the final stages of the challenge (vaccine three people, recruit three people to defeat MOTHER etc) and with a household of three conveniently sitting right next door to him - guess who's going to be cheated STEEL BLADDER asap? Also due to their Possession Hour meetups and chats about flora, Leslie Holland has become his best friend in the Eclectic Arts household.
Here's one final shot of the Chiara/Thorne Bailey genetics after I 'fixed' him (ie. made him look less cursed, not 'good looking' per se). His eyes are a nice colour and he has Chiara's mouth.
*TOP NOTCH TODDLER: makes you build all adult skills faster.
HEADSTRONG: makes CONFIDENT and FOCUSED moodlets last significantly longer.
GOOD MANNERS: will unlock the POLITE INTRODUCTION interaction, which will give the Sims a nice relationship boost and sometimes even make them instant friends, depending on how compatible the traits are.

Why am I thinking of hp-atla crossover fic ideas when I have a billion WIPs?? (Lol that's not the question)
What do you think it would look like for Ron and Sokka to meet? Would they get along instantly or would they irritate the hell out of each other bc they're too similar? 😂
WIPs are the fuel that keeps us going. You can never have too many. 😜
But this is such a fun question! And to be honest, I think Ron would get annoyed by Sokka at first. Not because they're so similar, though, but because Sokka is so high-strung and pedantic. Which we know are qualities Ron tends not to have much patience for.😅
However, just like with another library-loving know-it-all he came to adore 😉 I think Sokka would grow on him with time. I see them bonding initially over their sportiness. They're both athletic, and they're very enthusiastic spectators (Ron at the Quidditch World Cup 🤝 Sokka at the Earth Rumble tournament), and that's just an easy entry point for people. Alternatively, I could see them bonding over finding something ridiculous that other people take seriously (a la Ross and Rachel's dad bonding over the illegitimacy of Rachel's chiropractor in Friends). Either way, that would open the door for more niche interests. I think Ron would find Sokka's space sword pretty wicked. And I think Sokka would really enjoy learning how to play chess. And then I think they'd really come to respect one another! Plus, we know Sokka is capable of letting loose now and again, so he could definitely vibe with Ron's more chill nature if the occasion called for it.

a continuation of this post
Throughout the show Sokka has 5 weapons (important ones, anyway) His spear, club, machete, boomerang and space sword.
He loses the spear in "The Avatar Returns” when Zuko snaps it in half, and he learns that you can’t rely only on bravery and determination, you have to hone some skills. He isn’t quite sure what his skills are, but he’s going to figure it out. He tries to be the person who collects food ("collect" bc Aang is a vegetarian, so hunting won’t help everybody) but this fails again and again. In fact, it's a running joke that Sokka is always hungry yet bad at getting food. But then, in "Avatar Day", he loses his boomerang. At first, he’s ~distraught.~ (“I feel like I’ve lost my identity”) Then, Aang gets thrown in prison, and BAM he has purpose again! And what is that purpose? Using his brainy skills! Investigating! Cooking up plots to get Aang out of jail bc the pacifist monk doesn’t want to use violence (again). And as he’s getting used to this niche in the group, he becomes very possessive of it, basically telling Katara to stay in her lane (she has her waterbending! She has something!) He gets his boomerang back at the end of the episode, and boy is he happy to see it, but he has a healthier view of it now. It’s a tool that he’s very good at using, but he’ll be okay without it.
He loses the club in the desert when Appa is stolen. As we know, he immediately gets high on cactus juice, which doesn’t give us much to draw on. There’s something to be said about him falling back on his need to provide for his friends and get them water, but the important part comes when the gaang meets up with Suki. She helps him see that he doesn’t need to be The Protector, and he’s valuable to his friends, his tribe, his family, and to her even when he’s not doing anything. In the next episode (The Drill) he very excitedly and verbally takes on his role as the “plan guy,” and comes up with the idea for how to take down the drill. Bam! Purpose re-acquired. He’s starting to see that he doesn’t need the title of warrior, to justify his place in this group (or, like. in life in general). He has strengths outside of them.
Now, Hakoda briefly replaces the club in "The Guru”: when Sokka is planning to join his father’s crew for a mission, and be a warrior like he always wanted. But, Aang interrupts him; he needs him to help save Katara from uncertain peril. Aang doesn’t need him to be a warrior in that moment, he needs emotional support, grounding, and a plan (a plan!! from the plan guy!) So, Sokka returns the club to his dad, and he doesn’t fulfill what he thought his destiny was, but he does rescue the Earth King from Azula.
The machete is interesting, because he uses it often, but almost exclusively not for fighting. He chops the vines in the swamp, he cuts that valve in the drill, he uses it to hunt, and he holds it up a few times like he *might* use it to fight you, but usually doesn’t, or just uses his boomerang. Even when he uses it in a fight, it’s in a clever way, like when he uses it to cut ropes off of his wrists, or when he cuts the saddle off of that rhino in “Avatar Day.” But, even the machete is holding him to the ideal of who he thinks he needs to be. & that's why it has to be taken from him when he, Toph, & Momo try to warn the Earth King about the coup, and they are thrown in jail. In this episode, he does almost no fighting. He has that moment with Ty Lee, but he’s just dodging her, never even reaching for the 2 weapons on him. Toph does most if not all of the heavy lifting, while Sokka leads the way and does the talking.
It isn’t until “Sokka’s Master” that he confronts these losses. He doesn't *mention* the lost weapons, but he feels their absence. Although he's gotten closer to accepting himself, it’s hard. He’s in the Fire Nation, and he’s been waiting his whole life to fight these people, but now that he’s here, he’s doing a lot of standing to the side and waiting. He can’t even use his boomerang since they’re undercover. The planning stage is pretty much done for now; they’re just moving into position. Aang can bend 3 out of 4 elements, Toph has invented metalbending, Katara continues to fight and heal as a master waterbender... and he’s just kinda here. He’s lost all his weapons, and what does he have to replace them? Not much, as far as he can see. Even his friends can’t put what makes him useful and important into words.
But then he goes to Piandao, and even though the guy is supposed to teach him how to use a sword, Sokka learns about his other strengths, and not just because Piandao is nudging him in that direction. Sokka purposefully changes the tasks to better suit him, just like he's been doing for the past 6 months. He has always wanted to be a warrior, but when he gets the chance, he still does his own thing!! So, this episode isn’t about Sokka finally becoming a warrior, like he thought, but coming to realize that his destiny is just as real as everyone else's, it just lies where he hasn't yet thought to look.
Then, of course, he loses his boomerang and space sword when he and Toph are hanging on the edge of the war balloon. It's the end of the war, so his time when he has to be a warrior for his sister, his family, his tribe, and the world is coming to an end. In the past, he heavily tied his identity and self worth to his ability to use his weapons to fight, but now he knows himself free of the duty he has to others. He’s good enough as he is. And since he knows that, losing his boomerang doesn't even matter to him (unless he could’ve found a way to save himself & Toph with it). The space sword hurts a little more, bc making it was when his hard work as an inventor, a tactician, and an artist was finally noticed and validated by someone he looked up to, but he doesn't need the sword to prove it anymore either.
At the very end, he’s sitting and painting, something he learned with Piandao. And yes, he learned to paint in pursuit of wielding a sword, but by the finale, he paints for the sake of it. The sword is gone, the war is over, his leg is broken, and here he is: painting a picture of his friends, who are all gravitating towards him.

i have a fic idea if i ever get around to it i want to start soon where it's zukka modern au where they decide to take really long road trip before sokka has to go back home and it's supposed to be a fun last hurrah but it's tinged by the fact that they both want to confess but it's too late
(aka long drives on the endless road where you really start to think about what you want in life and what you want is the person next to you and you just can't have it.)
and also accidentally getting high on cactus juice because they got lost and sokka thought hey, i'm an outdoorsman, i totally got this (he doesn't have this)

Sniper Ships & Pals: Heavy - Hallucinations/Visions
“Are you sure is good idea?” Heavy asked as he looked down at the bowl of cactus juice Sniper had handed him.
“I don’t know. Can’t be that much different from shrooms, right? So probably its safe.” Implying he’d done shrooms before. Which wasn’t at all surprising since he was the one who’d suggested this upon learning that the funky cactus Scout had found was supposed to be the psychoactive kind. “If not, we can stumble back to base and Medic will fix us up or Respawn will. Feel free to change you mind about joining me though. You can just watch or leave entirely if ya like. I don’t mind.”
He’d made it clear from the beginning that he wouldn’t be at all upset if Heavy declined his invitation. Which was part of why Heavy had agreed to at least come. And even if they were only a short distance away from the base, it was still technically a camping trip. An activity Heavy hadn’t done much of in the desert and thus wanted to try, especially if it was with Sniper. It was just the two of them alone out here under the stars.
But also, Heavy would be lying if he tried to say he wasn’t at least a little curious about what it would be like to drink the hallucinogenic cactus juice. He’d never partook in such drugs before so it was natural human curiosity that drove him to sitting here next to Sniper by their little campfire, considering it.
Sniper downed his whole bowl without hesitation. The confidence of someone who was certain that this was a safe and sane thing to do. And he was right, with Medic and Respawn on their side, they could get away with taking risks most other people would have to think a bit harder about. So, with a shrug, Heavy downed his bowl too. It tasted bitter, almost medicinal, but not necessarily in a bad way.
Perhaps getting high like this for the first when Sniper was also getting high on something he’d never tried beforewasn’t the best idea. At the same time though, it probably wouldn’t make that much of a difference. It was too late now anyway.
