So many people are misinterpreting one of the opening scenes of Prey, and they’re misinterpreting it the same way in complete opposite directions.
One of the first scenes shows Naru practicing with throwing her hatchet, and then attempting to use it to hunt a deer. The deer is startled by a loud noise (What we know to be the Predator’s ship) and starts running, and despite a vigorous pursuit by Naru it manages to evade her and escape.
Many people, particularly the “she’s a Mary Sue” crowd but also some others who have criticized other aspects of the film, have lambasted the idea of showing her hunting with a throwing axe and being able to run as fast as a deer. Axes are not hunting weapons, and no human can run fast enough to catch a deer on foot. They say this is an example of either “woke” character shilling, or of ignorant/racist portrayals of Native Americans using ridiculous weaponry and bizarre feats of strength instead of the real-life technologies and skills of hunting.
Other people, generally those who are fans of the movie, love that this is an early establishment of her badass-ness and skill. They say that it shows that she is a predator herself, and sets up her later confrontation with the Predator.
Except what both sides of this reaction don’t seem to get is that, as I said, the deer escapes. Naru misses both of her throws with her axe, and even with her dog Sarii helping to corral the deer it still outpaces her and runs away. Later, her mother explicitly points out that her hatchet is meant for harvesting and toolwork, not hunting. And that no matter how close she got, you can’t eat “almost”.
Both sides of the response take this scene as some sort of victory for Naru, apparently missing the fact that despite all of her exertions she doesn’t bring home any food for her people. Despite all of her training and skill with the axe the movie shows that it will never replace the bow-and-arrow as a means of distance striking (And even after multiple training montages, the only animal she actually manages to successfully hunt with her axe in the entire film are a couple of small rabbits).
I feel that that is the point of this scene: To show that you need to use the right tool for the job, and Naru has to learn that she can’t just brute-force your way to victory. She keeps trying to find ways to improve her axe use (it was from her father, I understand why she tries to use it for everything she can), but when preparing for the final confrontation with the Predator she knows that she cannot rely on it as her killing weapon. So despite continuing to use it as her fighting weapon (And she does very well with it) she arranges several other traps and ultimately plans on using the Predator’s own weapons to finish it off. She gets in several good hits with the axe, but plans to strike the killing blow with a bow-and-arrow after all (Using the Predator’s advanced arrow-shooting device).
It’s a very clear arc for her and her hunting skills/style from the beginning to the end. She learned from her failure at the start of the film and changed for the finale.

Do you think Petsi would get along with Mordecai?
Maybe! Pesti is all for preservation of life (which is one reason I love him, he gets so passionate about it omg) so as long as Mordecai isn't hurting anyone around Pesti or telling stories about it I think they would get along great!
Pesti does love a good game of hatchet toss, he's undefeated in the local arcades! Maybe he and Mordecai could be good rivals? :D

Nine Realms is so weird like it's definitely not pushed to its limits in terms of overall plot and character which makes it feel intended for much younger audiences but one of the main villains attempts murder like. So many times.

between all these retro shooters we've been getting i think we need to quit making excuses for games that have dogshit melee and pistol options. im tired of pretending i'm fine when my pistol and melee sucks balls

I have a new plan. I need four friends to dress as the What We Do in the Shadows camps plus Guillermo and go with me to a Renaissance Fair in character. I call Nandor.
#I could also maaaybe do Nadja but I think Nandor would be the most fun for me#might need one more person to film us but we can also take turns filming each other#I’d go up to the weapon vendors and stuff and ask to test out swords#do the hatchet throwing etc etc all as Nandor#this is my new dream/life goal#probably too late this year to both find friends and put together a costume but perhaps next year or the year after#what we do in the shadows

anyyywaaayyyyys, axe/hatchet throwing was successful :)
i used this guy the whole time and it only bounced off the wall and onto the floor like four times.
i used both hands (top two were thrown with my right hand, bottom two with my left) and found i am slightly better with my right, but not by much. i typically got bullseye or four with my right, and mostly bullseye or four, but also a lot of three's and wild ass one's that i had to stand on my tippy toes to reach lol, with my left.
yeah, i used the more standard/easier throwing axe. but for my strength and speed, it was much more compatible for me than the other ones

the party leader, mike wheeler - apoc au character details + poll under the cut!

mike's role in the party:
a scouter - essentially plans runs, checks areas first to ensure safety, and directs the runners during supply runs
assigns basic survival chores at the beginning of each day (laundry, boiling water, patrol, hunting, etc.)
is the "face" of the party -> always the one to negotiate with people of other groups
even though the party likes to give him shit for being kind of rude and bossy about how he talks to them in "leader" mode - they always hang onto his every word! they love and respect him deeply
kind of like a tired dad whenever he's not fighting with someone else -> basically watches over everyone to make sure they're okay
would never hesitate to do something deplorable to protect the party: family first
skills + hobbies:
considered the designated driver (along with max): nancy taught him when he was younger. he was scared about being useless due to his inability to shoot and aim guns so nancy helped him find something useful. max teaches him how to drive manual so that he can drive her muscle car (its how they get over their distaste for each other)
writes an entry in a journal that he stole every day! he lets will doodle in the margins of the paper :)
loves to read whatever's around - particularly interested in history, sci-fi, and old journals from people before the apocalypse (reads them with dustin and el -> they are nosy as hell and live for the drama)
great at using machetes and hatchets -> do NOT let this boy shoot a gun. he will accidentally hurt you and himself
good at fixing up guns and navigating - lucas (guns) and dustin (navigating) taught him :D
quirks / fun facts:
he likes to switch around the pins on his jacket a lot! the party find pins around to give to him (range from terrible to wearable)
since he's the only boy that likes to tie up his hair, max and el like to doll up and play around with his hair during their downtime
is very annoying and particular when it comes to doing survival chores (out of love) -> makes sure that the chores are divided equally among all of them and that no one gets the same chores twice in a row

other notes: mike was the first character i had in mind when thinking about this au (no surprise there) and the drawing of him sitting cross legged with a machete in his hand was the first ever "official" drawing i made for this :D i tried to make apoc mike similar to canon mike in terms of his temperament, his hero complex, his self-sacrificial tendencies, his inability to appropriately process his romantic feelings, his natural leadership and his personality.
about mike's inability to use guns -> looking at mike's character dnd sheet, his dexterity is low and s1 mike wheeler cannot aim for shit either (see his rock throw). the reason he's most comfortable with machetes (and hatchets) is because of their versatility as both weapons and tools! just wanted to share because i think mike needed a nerf and him not being able to shoot guns is both in character and funny as hell to me
i've had mike and will's char sheets done for a while and i really love the way they look :) i'm excited to post will's next! i'm working on the character sheets in batches of two, so which duo are yall most interested to see next? i'll work on them based on the poll results and post them next week at the earliest :) i'll prob also try out some concept designs for the demogorgon-like zombies sometime soon as well!

Authors note: This is prob gonna be kinda shorter than my usual ones so sorry about that but I've been having terrible writers' block 😭

-Jeff will NOT have it
-As soon as some creep cat calls you, he’s throwing hands immediately
-Pretty sure he won’t remember he has a knife on him until after he’s beaten the creep to a pulp
-it’s best to close your eyes after he remembers his knife lol
-After that he’ll immediately start making sure your ok
-Checking to see if you’re upset, hurt in any way, ect.
-He’ll put his arm around your shoulders or waist to comfort you
-And to just protect you in general
-Even though Jeffs not much of a softie, he’ll be checking you’re ok a lot
-Probably in a much more subtle manner than when you first got catcalled
-But he’s constantly on the lookout for any creeps

-Afterwards, he would be a bit like Jeff in the sense that he would be very protective over you but kinda silently
-He won't be so obviously all over you but the subtle things he does are pretty noticeable
-Like asking if your comfortable when there's a lot of guys around or holding your hand to comfort you

-As soon as someone catcalls you its a hatcher to the face
-Like I know Toby might be mostly portrayed as shy and stuff
-But when it comes to the people he loves?

-He’d probably buy you your favorite food/snack if you need comfort food
-or steal it who knows
-But yeah if someone were to ever mess with you in that way he would not hesitate to throw whatever he has in his hands at the moment
