Another Dean, in hard pastels and willow charcoal and a charcoal pencil. He's distracted me quite nicely for a couple of hours, but now I'm thinking about Wednesday and the start of another chemo cycle. But anyway, it's probably the hottest day of the year so far, and guess what I'm cooking? Christmas dinner! Every year we do a Boxing Day turkey run and buy as many as we can fit in our freezer ridiculously cheaply. This is the last of this year's. It's a bit hot in my kitchen. But it's worth it.
Look at my hard pastels. Pretty, aren’t they?

Slowly but surely chugging my way through this figure drawing class.
I'm not quite halfway through my class yet, but I'm burnt out as all heck.

Little bit of a shit photo/haven't had the chance to mat it for an upcoming art show but! I've tried hard & soft pastels for the first time!
What should I name it for the art show? C:

Tip: hardness is how hard or soft an art supply is. (duh) The reason this is specified is because soft materials put down more pigment while harder ones put down less, appearing lighter on the page. This allows for more control in shading which is why artist grade pencils and pastels often offer a range of hardness.
{note- the softer it is the more trouble it will have maintaining a point.}

I like this lady who's standing on my little easel. She's far from perfect, but I think she shows how lines really are overrated. I started with the shadows and then used some white and then did a few lines where the hard edges were. I really like the shape of the pose and some of the bits where light and shade meet.
I used these, by the way, on their sides. The squared edges for the lines and the flat sides for the shadows and lights:
They're broken off bits of Conté hard pastel.

I'm in a life drawing class again this semester, working exclusively with nupastels. I haven't worked in pastels for about a decade, and it's definitely taking some time to get used to it again. I'm cursed and don't have an easel, so that makes things uber extra ultra difficult.
