Program landyard (and competitors research)

As well as doing research on the computer, I decided to look through the programs/landyards of festivals that I’ve been to myself. This way its a lot easier for me to see how practical and readable they are in use.

NASS FESTIVAL

Nass is a small dnb and skate festival in the south west of the uk. that has a wekkend capacity f 15,000. It opened its gates for the first time in 2012 with headliners like Andy C and Dj Fresh, to later having headlines like Cypress Hill and Netsky. Tickets start from £115 for 4 days and £125 for 3.

Nass 2014/2015 programs were attacked to black lanyards that have the logo printed along it. One thing that I didn’t like instantly about the program was that it had no kind of casing, this resulted in the program getting a bit ruined over the weekend and it would have been nice to have something to protect it. I also felt that the  front of it and the over all design was a little bit boring and they could have used elements of the handlebars/headphones/skateboards in their designs to make it a little more exciting. However, the layout of the whole thing was clean and coordinated that made it easy to navigate without confusion. I didn’t like the separate pages as I know from experience how easy it is to have one fall off. The map did look nice and gave it an authentic however I dont think its particularly clear as there were 2 entrances, one to the festival and one to the stage and this does not show you how to get to the camping area from the main gate very well. Overall, I don’t think the program design is great but that may have been down to the relative newness of the festival where theyre still working things out,

LOVE SAVES THE DAY

LSTD is a 2 day, non-camp festival in Bristol featuring all types of dance and electric music for a daily capacity of 5000. With a 60s hippy vibe attached to the design and the festival, the festival is a has a fun, bright feel to it. Tickets cost £35-£49 a day depending on the sale tier.

What stood out to me about the LSTD lanyard was its bight colour against the other festivals I’d gone to which were all black. This gave it an unique edge and fitted perfectly with the bubbl/happy feel of the branding.It also had a sleeve like the one that I always planned to use with my lanyard and it kept i nice over the wo days however not camping would have definitely helped when it comes to looking after it. When you open the program up is a single tier, double sided fold out piece. This works really well however would have more complications with a bigger festival like the one I’m planning; I could consider making in two tier so that I can fit all the information it without making the font size too small. The map is also clean and concise, making it really easy to navigate whilst simultaneously being aesthetically pleasing to look at. Even though its for a much smaller area, I think it would still work well with a larger festival. Overall, I don't have many faults with the look and layout, the design is consistent and unique and the layout works perfectly for a festival of its size.

BOOMTOWN

Boomtown is an all-inclusive music festival with theatrical themes and a storyline to follow. With a capacity of 60,000, that has grown by 20,000+ since its opening in 2009 and its move to Matterley Estate in Hampshire in 2011. With tickets starting at £198.50 for the 4 days.

The boomtown lanyard is again black with the logo which I find a little boring, the festival branding isn’t particularly colourful however they could have done something a bit more adventurous. The program itself id really stylish and in keeping with the branding, however again the inside is a little boring even though its very practical for the line up side.This has made me question how i will make the program interesting without making it too complicated or messy.  The fold out pages that make up the map is a really sleek and innovative idea, its neatly laid out into uptown and downtown with clear labelling and districts obvious to find. This design is really smart for such a complicated space and that makes up for the lack of illustrative design. I would have liked them to possibly have a larger map option that is a bit more theatrical. Overall, I think the festival has grown in capacity rapidly over the last few years so they’ve done well to make a clear and practical design but have lost the the theatrical magic of the festival.
