Why I love the Spymaster #78: Flapping!

#78: Flapping!

The Spymaster waves his hands energetically in times of great excitement, both positive and negative.

In The Timeless Children, he flaps when berating himself for missing an opportunity for a good one-liner:

In The Power of the Doctor, he shakes out his hands vigorously when breaking free from UNIT imprisonment:

The Spymaster evinces many traits associated with being neurodeviant [see #47: He's neurodeviant! for a discussion of why I use that term] or neurodivergent.

Here's a partial list:

He has a conversational consciousness. See #34 [his reaction to Thirteen’s TARDIS] and #11 [his mind at work]. Included because this is an unusual way to think and therefore possibly indicative of an uncommon neurotype.

He acts everything out. See #46. Included because this is an unusual way to think and therefore possibly indicative of an uncommon neurotype.

He requires a lot of visible effort to codeswitch. See #48 [codeswitching] and #39: You can see him BECOME the Master!

He uses language in a way often associated with neurodeviant self-expression, stimming, coping, etc., including, but not limited to the following: punctiliously precise word use [see #57], saying “Ooooh” [see #38], repeating things [see #31 and #28], and explaining jokes [see #4].

He has a variety of gestures and whole-body movements associated with neurodeviant self-expression, stimming, coping, etc., including, but not limited to the following: bouncing [see #65], nonstandard eye contact [see #42], baring his teeth [see #33], headbanging when frustrated [see #27], rocking when excited [see #14], brainfingers [see #12], dancing/clapping when excited [see #3], and vibrating when angry [see #2].

To this list we can also add flapping!

I want to talk about Pablo.

Pablo is a childrens show with autistic characters, and an autistic cast. I love Pablo, it's a really good show in my opinion, and I really relate to a few of the characters.

However, I do have a few issues with it. The main one being that Pablo is nonspeaking, but in his imagination, in his ideal world that he's made, he isn't. This really bothers me because it portrays being nonspeaking as being a less good scenario than being speaking, and it isn't. There is no better way to communicate, oral speech isnt superior.

The other is that llama (who is actually my favorite character) is fully nonspeaking besides echolalia, but her voice actor isn't. Llamas voice actor is fully speaking (the last time I checked anyway. Its sort of hard to find information.) and whilst I am super glad all the actors are autistic, I do wish they at least used a semispeaking or a nonspeaking echolalia using person.

Now I want to talk about the good parts, because as I said I do really like this show.

All the actors are autistics, and that is FANTASTIC. I am super tired of us being represented by allisitics, so that was super nice to see.

It has representation of tons of different types of autistics, and shows us as unique people (or in this case animals ^^ ) rather than emotionless copies of eachother.

And finally, it made me feel like I was being represented. It made me feel seen. I related to multiple characters in multiple ways and that was so so nice to finally see someone like me.
