“okkotsu!” you cried out, feminine and shrill voice ringing in the air. the cicadas chirped melodiously, calling out their delightful songs in the spring air.

the young boy staggered around, losing his balance from spinning too fast. his fragile hands reached out, pulling in small grabby motions towards your innocent and joyous face.

you were always so optimistic, even when you were younger. yuuta could only huff and wail as his caretaker hauled him away from the playground, gesturing it was time for him to come home. thick and messy tears spilled out the corners of his eyes which hadn’t yet endured countless sleep devoid nights.

he was so far away, but that was okay because you knew you’d see him the very next day.

“okkotsu! promise to play with me again tomorrow!” you cupped your hands, exclaiming as much as your little lungs could endure. yuuta could see the tears heavy in your gaze, but even then, you prevailed. you grinned, all for him.

“okkotsu! come oooon, don’t cry, okay? (y/n)’s got your back! see, see?! look! they don’t bite!” you braved a smirk on your features, beckoning the shy and introverted young man over. his face looked uncertain and his lips wobbled as though he could crack at any moment. he took a few cautious steps, maintaining his distance between you and the furry animal on the floor.

“r-really? it won’t bite?” he coughed, reaching his unstable fingertips out.

“eh?! that’s the first time you’ve spoken to me! your voice is so nice! it’s so cool! hey! can i hear it again? pleaaaase? i know you’re shy but i’d really like to hear it! hey, okkotsu, say my name? pretty please?”

“um- i, uh.. it’s okay.. you can call me yuuta.”

“yuuta! you’re going to be late for your first day of junior high! i totally told you to wake up on time too!” you stood with your hands rested firmly on your hips, face stern and tone impatient.

“sorry! sorry- it’s um, my hair. i don’t know how to style it.” he admitted, albeit sheepishly by trailing the last few words off into a murmur. you only gave him a sigh before kneeling down behind him, propping yourself up to take a look at his hair in the reflection of the mirror.

“how on earth are you so tall already? we eat the same food, you know. slouch over a little.” you pinched his cheeks before glossing over his hair.

when you ran your fingertips through his hair, you felt butterflies and anxiety rock your stomach.

that’s never been there before.

you’ve touched yuuta countless times, whether that was accidentally hitting him, holding his hand to cross the street…

so why was it different?

you could feel yuuta’s body tense up and run rigid underneath your touch.

that definitely wasn’t there before.

“relax. it’s me.” you cooed quietly, roughing up his hair into different styles.

“like this? looks like you just woke up, sorta, but i think it’s cute.”

yuuta’s heart rate skyrocketed through the roof and his breath hitched.

“cute?” he reiterated, chewing out the phrase like he’d never heard it before in his life.

“hm? yeah-“

you caught his gaze in the mirror, eyes half lidded and attention averted. the tips of his ears were tainted a deep red with small flicks of blush painting his cheeks.

“eh?! nononono- not like that i’m- i just think it suits you, you know? oh, crap, would you look at the time? okay we gotta go and leave!” you clambered out of his bedroom, thudding the door shut behind you.

yuuta only gawked at you with bewilderment, lips slightly parted and fingertips outstretched in his failed attempt to stop you.

he turned to himself in the mirror, studying his features before running one hand through his jet black locks.

“cute, huh?” he muttered, avoiding his own judgemental gaze.

the bittersweet part about growing up with a childhood friend is change.

for all the time that you’d spent with yuuta, you didn’t realise that your relationship with him was something to not take for granted.

especially with those around you who would kill for what you two have.

you’d always get mundane questions from high school girls who thought they could have a shot with him, “what’s his type?” “do you think he likes me?”

meanwhile you only played along with their charades, laughing inwardly when he was actually extremely introverted.

“so? what’s the deal with you and okkotsu-san? you guys dating?”

“no. we’re just friends.”

“seriously? you guys are always glued at the hip. you know he has a picture of you in his locker, right?”

“yeah? so do i. it doesn’t mean anything.”

“it’s kind of a shame, he’s such a nice young man.. gone to waste like that..”

“what’s gone to waste?” yuuta inquired with an indifferent tone, plopping down beside you with his bento box. the classmate sat opposite you only gave him a phony cheerful temperament, twirling her index finger around her hair.

“oh! okkotsu-senpai! we were just talking about you! how was your da-“

“please leave.”

you could only gape at him in your peripherals, sputtering on your sandwich as you watched the life drain from your classmate at his monotony. yuuta didn’t spare you or the girl a glance as he worked to unpack his lunch, hell the guy even murmured a small itadakimasu as if nothing happened.

“wh- okkotsu senpai?”

“listen.” he let out a deep sigh before proceeding.

“whatever shot you thought you had with me? it’s gone out the window. don’t disrespect (y/n) in front of me like that again.”

“you’re making us uncomfortable, so get up and go.” he motioned with his chopsticks, giving her a dead gaze towards another table.

the girl scoffed, mouth hung wide open as she picked up her bag and stormed out of sight.

whilst your face was as blank as a stone, internally, you were only screaming in the depths of piping hot hell visible from the sun itself.

baby girl? that was when you noticed how fucking fine of a man yuuta grew up to be.

“that was seriously nerve wracking.. my stomach hurts so bad right now” yuuta coughed through a bite of his sandwich, refusing to meet your gaze.

you slapped his back, because, holy shit??? awe painted your face like you just witnessed your own child talking or walking for the first time.

“what the shit? yuuta? are you kidding?”

“oh, huh? did i overdo it or something?“

“no?! are you kidding? that was fucking awesome! i swear! this is why i love you-“

yuuta let out a shrill squeak unbeknownst to any human being able to produce such a volume. it was a cross between a floorboard creaking, a mouse sniffing and him choking on his food. the poor boy had to excuse himself to the bathroom, hacking and sniffling in an ugly fit of coughs from the food that got caught in his windpipe.

your blood rushed to your head, veins lit ablaze, bones rattling as you could hear the chatter pound and drill into your skull, scoring you deep and down into your bones.

“did she just say she loves him?”

“i totally knew they were going out!”

“i can’t believe it…”

“do you think he’ll reject her?”

it replayed over, and over, and over. what a fucking fool you felt. did he even feel the same?

a blob of black clouded your vision and you could hear the glass breaking.

yuuta sat himself back down, excusing himself.

you could hear nothing but the tune of his heartbeat. or was it yours? it sounded too heavy to belong in either of your bodies.

his voice came as a wobble because of his anxiety, but this was the one thing in his life he’d be absolutely certain of.

“that’s okay. i love you too.”

“yuuta? you okay? you’ve been spacing out for at least five minutes. something on your mind?” you lightly shake your boyfriend, grip reassuring but firm. it takes a couple of seconds for his gaze to gloss over as he returns back to reality.

“sorry. was just thinking about our childhood, that’s all.” his voice comes out deep and masculine. it doesn’t have that tremor as it used to before, like he’d break down at any minute.

you can say with absolute certainty as you stare up your entire 5’10 boyfriend that he’s matured well.

his hand snakes around to your waist, pulling you into him for comfort.

some ways better than others, you suppose.

“can we stay home today?” he hums, resting his chin on top of your head,

“same as ever, yuuta, aren’t you? it’s fine, i’ll tell nobara my period’s making me act up. she’ll understand-“

“hm? you’re not due for another week though, right?”

you crease your eyebrows as you type out an apology to nobara for cancelling plans, glancing up at yuuta curiously.

“how the heck do you know that?”

“i’m not supposed to? i’d always count your cycle so i wouldn’t irritate you on the wrong day. besides, don’t you think it was too convenient for you to always find snacks in your locker when it rolled around?”

“those snacks were you?! oh my god! i was trying to figure that out for forever!”

“i know. i remember you ranting to me about it.”

“you just sat there?! yuuta! you’re so cheeky sometimes, i swear!”

“only for you.” he chimes, peppering a soft kiss onto your head. you smile against him, though unfortunately pry out of his familiar and welcoming touch.

“i’m gonna step out for a second tho, ‘kay? i think that’s itadori at the door with my chocolate and painkillers” you snort, giving yuuta a bold wink as you put on your best act, keeling over and clutching at your abdomen as though you’re on death’s door.

“you’re awful.” yuuta chuckles, slumping down onto the sofa to hear the events unfold right in front of him.

you clear your throat and slouch your shoulders as you pry the apartment door open.

“(y/n)-senpai! i came as fast as i could and i brought you some of your favourite sna- oh, okkotsu-senpai! hello!”

“hi there.” he leans his head back, giving itadori a small wave.

“i won’t interrupt you guys so get well soon! and fast! cause i wanna hang out with you! bye!”

you cradle the necessities itadori brought whilst gleaming at yuuta with a wicked grin plastered on your face from ear to ear.

“you want anything?” you cock an eyebrow, showing him the arrangement of snacks.

it’s not the answer you were expecting, but it definitely wasn’t unwelcome. it made you feel warm inside, like eating warm and soothing soup on a cold winter’s day. this, for you, was okkotsu yuuta at his best, stripped clean and vulnerable.

you’re the only one who he can relax around, act like the world is carefree. like he’s young again, prancing around in that dingy colourful playground he met you at.

I watched as Tommy was driven away from the house, waiting for the car to disappear before I gathered my things. The servants brought my coat and handbag, bringing around another car. Everything was going smoothly. I had a cover story for Tommy, which he believed, and my confidence was growing by the minute. This had to be planned for weeks, in order to not gain any suspicion. Sitting back in the car, I went over my plan in my head, ensuring that I knew what steps to take. 

“Here we are Mrs Shelby.” My chauffeur announced as we arrived, opening the door for me.

“Thank you. I shall have someone call you when my visit is over.” I said, beginning to walk away. 

After five minutes, I looked over my shoulder, checking he was gone. When everything was clear, I turned on my heel, making the half hour walk to my friend’s house. I couldn’t help that my pace was fast, brushing through the crowds with my head down, as to not bring attention upon myself. 

Anna was a dear friend of mine, someone I had only known for two years, less than other friends, but considered close anyway. And she had been stuck in a terrible marriage. Her husband, a top end business man, had married her when they were young; she didn’t understand what love was, yet she believed she felt that when looking at Victor. Obviously their families were happy, their wealthy children now marrying a wealthy suitor. Over the years Anna realised that she was stuck like most women were, and she wasn’t able to escape by herself.

“Oh, (Y/N), what a surprise!” Anna’s voice called out from across the road.

I halted in my step, trying to hide my shocked face. We weren’t supposed to be meeting like this. I still had a ten minute walk before I reached her home.

I approached her, noticing the two men beside her.“Anna, how are you? I was on my way to surprise you actually, seeing as we haven’t seen each other in such a long time.”

"Oh sorry, I've ruined it! Do join me for a walk though?"

"Yes, of course."

She linked her arm in mine, gripping onto it tightly, and I could feel fear radiating off her. The two men stayed back, allowing us to speak. They were Victor's men, meaning something was wrong and effecting the plan.

"What's wrong? Explain everything." I whispered.

"Victor had unexpected guests, a business partner was angry with a deal. He sent me out of the house, now I've got these two following me."

"Has he hurt you?"

She sighed."Not this week. But the week before was rough, business is caving in."

"We'll think of something."

We continued walking, now talking at a higher volume, though I expected the men weren't really interested in what we were saying. I needed to ensure that they didn't think we were up to something. As we headed further into town, the cafe we usually spent time at came into view, and I suddenly had an idea. Steering Anna in that direction, she didn't question me, making me glad I had her trust. I knew the owner well, another woman that knew all too well the awful side of a man. She got rid of him and was running things all by herself.

"Ah, Mrs Shelby, Mrs Hilt, I haven't had you two visit in a while." Georgia beamed as we walked inside. There was only another small group of women and a young couple sat inside.

"Apologies Georgia, we have been extremely busy." Anna smiled.

"Two separate tables please Georgia, we have some more guests for you." I asked, letting Georgia lead the way.

We kept up the normal act, ordering food and tea, chatting away like we were having a catch up. In the back of my mind, I was trying to think of a way to get these men away from us. There was no way I could get Anna away without them seeing or taking action, not here. She was supposed to have everything packed, ready to go once I got to the house. Victor wasn't supposed to be at home either. Fuck.

"Anna, I'm headed to the powder room and I haven't brought any of my powder with me, do you mind?" I announced, making eye contact with her, hoping she would understand what I was implying.

"Yes, of course. I'll come with you actually." she stood with me. As soon as we were inside the powder room, her relaxed form tensed."What are we going to do?"

"I've got a plan. But no questions, alright? You just got to follow me, literally."

She nodded.

"Can you run in those shoes?"

"Yes, just about."

"Good, cause we might need to do that."

We spent another two minutes standing there, with me explaining what we were going to do. I had no idea if it would work, though I didn't let that catch onto Anna. Peaking my head out of the door, the men had their backs to us, engrossed in their own conversation. Taking Anna's hand, I led her out of the door and quietly scurrying into the kitchens, luckily the door being right next to the powder room. The chefs looked at us, bewildered at our entrance. They were about to pipe up when I quickly pulled my gun out, silencing them. Georgia appeared from crouching on the ground, only rolling her eyes and placing her hand in her hip.

"Mrs Shelby-"

I shushed her."I have to get her out of here." I whispered.

Georgia's sassy tone disappeared, hand falling from her hip."Go out the back, this way. Once you go out of the gate, turn left down the alley way then a sharp left again. It'll take you to the old part of town, near the country lanes. Do you need me to call someone?" she ushered us through the kitchen.

"Yes my chauffeur. Tell him to park outside the post office."

"Same number?"

"Same number. And tell your workers-"

"They never saw anything."

"Thank you Georgia. Whenever you need anything, just call."

Following her instructions, we ran down the alleyways as she had said, arriving in the old town within minutes. My chauffeur wouldn't be here for at least another twenty minutes, but what were we to do till then? Unless we ducked in and out of shops, we were stuck out in the open. I pulled Anna back into the alley, catching my breath.

"(Y/N) what are we going to do?" Anna panicked.

"Just stay calm. Those men are stupid, but they'll know we sneaked out the back. Hopefully they'll get lost in the alleys for a while."

"And until then?"

"Look I..." my words drifted off as I heard a familiar voice, two familiar voices, then three.

Anna called after me as I stepped out of the alley, quickly catching up to my steps. I was relieved when I saw Arthur and John, followed by some Peaky lads. As I made my way towards them, they didn't see me until the last minute, surprised by my presence.

"Oi, what are you doing here?" John's cheeky grin came out, pulling me into a side hug.

"Is Tommy about? Thought he was conducting business today?" Arthur asked.

"He is." I replied."Is there a car near here?"

"Er, yeah. Round the corner."

"Good, mind if we take it?"

"Why?"

"Doesn't matter, we need it."

"(Y/N), does Tommy think you're somewhere else? Don't be getting us into trouble now!"

"Arthur, I wouldn't be asking if I didn't desperately need it."

Him and John looked at each other, before sighing."Alright, lads take the ladies to the car. We don't tell Tommy about this though, yeah?"

"Course not. Lads, we need to run."

I heard Arthur and John shout for us as we began running, the boys trying to keep up. Anna was holding my hand, almost running as fast as me. Of course Tommy would know about this, he knew everything. Just as I thought we were making the escape, that this would be all over for Anna, the two idiots guarding her had somehow circled and caught us.

"Fuck." I pulled my gun out, everyone else having one copying. It's was three to two, though we could still lose."Just let her come with me."

"We let her go, Victor kills us."

"If she goes back, Victor will kill her."

“Can’t let you do that.”

Without hesitating, I pulled the trigger though unfortunately didn’t hit either of them. I dove onto Anna, hitting the ground briefly before our instincts told us to scramble away. I covered Anna, ready to shoot again as our lads starting shooting Victor’s men. We were called over to the car, which one of the boys had somehow got to. With our heads ducked down, we sprinted to the car, Anna screaming as bullets flew everywhere. I shoved her in the back, turning around to shoot one last time before jumping in myself. Anna ducked down whilst I continued shooting out of the window, but it was hard to do so when my driver was swerving so much. As we sped away, I saw Arthur and John with the rest of the lads, running towards the source of the noise.

Shit, they were definitely going to tell Tommy.

The car sprayed up the gravel as our driver hit the brakes too hard in front of my house. Everyone remained frozen, heavy breaths escaping all of us. I opened the door, grabbing Anna's hand and pulling her with me. We (not so gracefully) walked up the driveway, pushing open one of the doors to get inside. I was still clutching onto my gun in my other hand.

"(Y/N), have you been shot?!" Anna screamed, pointing to my hip.

My hand instantly reached for that place, relaxing when it wasn't my blood."No, not me. Come on, I need a fucking drink."

Members of staff looked at me questionably, though no one dared to approach me. Anna delicately sat down on the sofa, whilst I poured us both a strong drink; I knew she didn't like whiskey, but it was what she needed right now. Her disgruntled face wasn't surprising to me. She made me laugh as she tried to sip at it.

"(Y/N), I have nothing with me." Anna sighed.

"Items don't matter."

"He's going to come after me."

"He'll have me to deal with me, a Shelby."

"I'm not sure..."

Our heads snapped to the door as it opened, and I refrained from groaning. Tommy had come in, and although to the untrained eye he looked his usual self, I could see the fire blazing behind his eyes. Swigging back my drink, I slammed down the glass, saying nothing as I walked past him and towards his office.

"Mrs Hilt." I heard Tommy begrudgingly acknowledge her before he came after me.

Crossing my arms over my chest, I sat on top of his desk, something he hated unless we were in a different mood. Once he closed the door behind him, his eyes stayed on the floor until his face was right in front of mine.

"What the fuck do you think you're doing, eh?" his voice was low.

"Her husband was going to kill her." I seethed.

"Her husband is going to kill us now."

"Oh, like he's the only one trying to kill us."

"Do you want to get killed? Is that it?" Tommy raised his voice.

"I want to stop my friends from being killed."

"If you had asked me for help, I would have done just that! You can't put yourself in these situations, you're a huge target!"

"And you're not?"

"That's different."

"Why? Because you're a man? Because you're Tommy Shelby and I'm just the woman who hangs on your arm to make you look more like a normal man?"

"Fucks sake." he turned around, raising his arms before they slapped against his sides.

I hopped off the desk, storming up towards him."It's true though, isn't it? You never tell me anything, always come back hurt yet when I do it, somehow it's wrong."

"It's not the same."

"I know it's not."

"So why are you acting like this?"

"It's not an act. I know we always have targets on our heads, but what I don't know is why. I get dragged from place to place with no explanation, locked in the house for own safety, though from what, I don't know, and if there is a fall out with the family I'm the last to know. Even if I'm told something, it's never the full story."

"It's for-"

"It's for my safety, how many times have I heard that?!"

"Because it's true!" Tommy yelled at me.

"Don't you think I understand that?!" I screamed back."I know you're trying to keep me safe, but... But Tommy," I lowered my voice, slowly walking towards him,"Tommy, I am never told anything. You don't tell me anything, the servants say nothing, even the family don't speak a word. The girls have always hinted but that just blurs the picture even more. If I can understand what's going on around me, I have a better chance of knowing what's going to come next, or what I can do to help."

"You won't be helping in any business."

"That's not what I'm saying. I can help by knowing what steps to take next, where is should go in an emergency-"

"I wanted to keep you away from all that."

"And how's that going for you?"

He groaned, clearing his throat."Right, then what do you want me to do?"

"Just let me in, just enough that I understand what's going on around me."

"I don't think you want that."

"Stop telling me what I want. If you don't start telling me things, I'm just going to keep doing stupid shit like this behind your back."

Our faces were stone cold, eyes staring into each others, until I broke into a smile, giggling like a little girl. Tommy reluctantly smiled, a small chuckle escaping him.

"Fine. But some details will be spared."

"Just enough details for me. Thank you Tommy."

I pulled him down to kiss me by the back of his neck, and he wasted no time wrapping his arms around me. But I had other plans, I wasn't going to forget about this argument too quickly. As I pulled away, I hummed through my smile, his confused face watching me as I walked away.

"Don't look at me like that, we still have a guest in the house Mr Shelby."

A Sunshine Boy and His Princess in Her Tower

You thrived in your seclusion. Like a princess trapped in a ten story tower. Yet she wasn’t trapped, she was free. As for that overly loud, sunshine boy next door, well, it was a different story.

4:28 pm. It was well into the afternoon. The clouds gracefully covered those harsh sun rays like a thick picnic blanket as the red and white lights of the never ending cars glowed onto the city road. The sun was destined to retire, and yet, it was right at your doorstep, not even bothered to put down his last cardboard box down before greeting you. 

“Uhm… aha… hi!” He went on, his fingers, laced with nervousness, tapping away at the cardboard surface. You shifted your stance, a hand lightly gripping the door, keeping it open. If he was so nervous, why even bother with this greeting? Your eyes interrogated his unbalanced figure, watching him as he shifted around the box in his hand, awkwardly balancing it on his arm before going in for a handshake. You cringed, second-hand embarrassment shooting through you as you quietly refused, not just because you simply didn’t want to, but because with his lopsided posture, he would’ve been better off without it. 

Finally dropping his box down to his feet, the boy in front of you continued. “Ok uh… well my name’s Jeno. I guess we’ll be neighbors, huh? He scratched the nape of his neck as you, on the other side of the door frame, simply nodded. You thought your naturally frigid and cold demeanor, one in which you were known for, was more than enough to drive the embodiment of sunlight away from your presence, but he clearly had other plans.  

This sunshine boy went on and on, never noticing the unwanting expression clearly plastered onto your face. “I’ve noticed this floor’s pretty empty. Is it ‘cause it’s the top? Personally I don’t mind the long ride upwards, the view up here’s amazing! You can always get the perfect amount of sunlight in the morning! 

You huffed under your breath. And yet, there's too much sunlight in front of me right now. 

A soft clearing of your voice finally caught his attention, startling him like an innocent deer in headlights. “OH! Yea right! My bad, I kinda got a problem with goin’ on and on like that. Anyways, what’s your name?” 

It seemed harmless enough, not that anything right now could convince you that he was harmful, but this question did seem worthy enough of your time. You leaned against the wall beside you. “Y/N” 

“Y/N!” He cheerfully echoed back, earning a slight wince on your end. Did he know how to control his volume? “Y/n, y/n, y/n!” He sang softly bobbing head left and right as he bent down to pick up the just recently discarded box just in front of his feet. “Well, I’d love to stay and chat some more…”

Well I wouldn’t, but whatever. 

“...But I gotta start unpacking! Wouldn’t want this sunlight to run out on me! I’ll see you ‘round, y/n! He sang the last syllable of your name before heading into the door neighboring yours, and shutting it quietly. Seconds later, you shut yours, too, resuming your boring, boring business. 

Nice try, there’s no way sunlight would run out in that room. 

...

...Or so you thought. But just like any other recurring theme in those novels that always put you softly to sleep, those stories you would easily get lost in, this Jeno guy always managed to take you by surprise. Apparently, sunlight could run out in his room, but on one condition. It would run straight into yours.  

As it turns out, being two of the only residents on the top floor of your apartment complex, aside from the token ‘building creep’ two doors down and building electricians, leads to a very quiet life. A life that you, whether as a curse or a blessing, genuinely enjoyed. As your supposed peers living in lower floors began to compare you to the building creep on your common floor, you relished in the silence, the lack of human interaction. You thrived in your seclusion. Like a princess trapped in a ten story tower. Yet she wasn’t trapped, she was free.  

As for that overly loud, sunshine boy next door, well, it was a different story. 

“Y/N!” he knocked on your door the morning after, the nervousness that once lined the tips of his fingers being fully replaced with sheer excitement. You swear, the boom of his voice had surpassed any of your powerless alarms. Grudgingly, you slid out of bed, the sound of his not-so-quiet humming acting as a magnet, pulling your sleepy figure to the door, just waiting for you to scream at it in an annoyed response. 

But you couldn’t. With his cheeks raised up into a heavenly smile, and his eyes growing into crescents the moment he laid his eyes on you, you just couldn’t move. Your froze, A blinding, yet comforting light pierced through, whether it was from the lively aura radiating at your doorstep or the morning sunshine peeking from the floor’s few windows, you couldn’t tell. 

You prayed to god it was just the latter. 

Your heart wouldn’t be able to take it otherwise. 

“Do you wanna help me get coffee?”

...help him? A quizzed look grew on your face, as nervousness grew on his. 

“Well, I’m new to the city and, uh, I kinda don’t know my way around it, so I was hoping’ you could show me around? We’re neighbors, after all!” 

Frankly, if you couldn't tell by my uninteresting responses to your overtly simple questions, I’m the last person you would want to invite to anything, so no, I won’t-

The innocent sparkle dazzled in his eyes, the same way pain tugged at your heart. You couldn’t say no. You couldn’t turn Jeno down, You couldn’t disappoint this sunshine boy. Unconsciously, your lips slightly strung upwards, cocking your head to the right as you forced out a response, a response you knew you were bound to regret. 

 “Sure, just let me get changed.” The obviously fake tone in your voice was unnoticeable compared to the skyrocketing, joyful expression on his face as you uttered your answer. You turned around, shuffling far into your safe space. That would leave him alone, right? 

The door locked shut, steps begin inching towards you. 

No, he wouldn’t. 

He slips his shoes off and tosses them gently to the carpet behind him

Is he being serious? Who does this Jeno guy think he is? 

He plops down onto the couch, a couch almost always empty, with you never having guests over and all. 

He's definitely serious. 

“I’ll just wait here till you’re ready! He gushed, the couch he rested on taking him in perfectly with open arms. 

There went your safe space, ruined and disturbed, brutally disturbed. And the culprit? An innocent angel whose wings were crafted straight from the sun. 

...

“You don’t talk much, do you?” Jeno sipped his newly brewed coffee, quietly cursing at scorching liquid burning his lips. You sat parallel to him at the 7days Cafe, your hunched over figure using up all of your might trying not to laugh as he added another seemingly useless question to his “new neighbors questionnaire”. Gee, you don’t say, huh.

“What makes you say that?” you stirred your drink, gazing at each and every bubble popping away. Your eyes trailed up, watching the figure in front of you relish in the glowing evening sky. The various street lights accentuating his gentle features.  And if you were being completely honest, he was the reason you’ve hardly uttered a word the entire time you’ve been there. His skin, practically glowing before you. His hazel hair, falling just above his eyelashes. Eyelashes which could’ve cradled pleasant flower petals with that length. 

“C’mon now, don’t give me that,” exasperation filled his tone. “I wanna know why! I mean, you don’t go out much either, right? There’s gotta be a reason.”

Silence filled the empty space above your cafe table. You liked it, though. It hasn't been this quiet in a long time. You sigh, stirring your drink once more, you pitied the drink, it never got the chance to be properly enjoyed. 

“I dunno,” You began. A sudden rush of heat filled your cheeks, and you couldn’t find yourself to look back at him, even if he was staring at your enclosed figure with all the intent in the world. “I just never felt the need to? I guess.” You simply shrugged as Jeno began rocking back and forth on his chair. So childish. 

“Is that why you live on the top floor?” 

You grin under your breath. Maybe it was one of the reasons you barely conversed with the people in your class, the excuse for your desire to be alone, with only noise surrounding you were the quiet chirps ringing in the sky, as you lose yourself to your novel of the day. All of this, simply because you moved into the top floor of an apartment building. 

“Yeah, maybe it is.” 

God, how stupid do I sound right now? You winced, waiting for his response. 

Silence rushed in between the two of you once again, this time, it wasn’t what you had desired.

“That’s cute.” he broke the silence, bringing you back to the reality you so closely lost in that last second. You glanced up at him, eyebrows knitted together in confusion. Jeno simply smiled, taking your quizzed look as a sign to continue.  

“It's like those children’s fairy tales! Where the princess is locked up in a tower and, um, needs to be saved by the knight! Yeah something like that.” 

In an effort to speed up this ungodly awkward coffee run, you drink your now cold cup of coffee. “Princess?” 

Jeno springs up in his seat, creamer wrappers shivering in his presence. “Yeah! You’re like a princess trapped in a tower, err, I guess you’re not really trapped, cause you like bein’ there and all, but still!  

The only thing you could do was smile as he went on and on about this fairy tale alternate reality of our lives. He’s such a child. So cute. You sip onto your cold drink once more, shuddering at your own thoughts. Did I really just say that? 

Jeno stood up, enclosing the trash on his side of the table into his hand, and turned over to you before heading to the cafe trash can.  

“And I can be your knight and shining armor who’s always here when you need saving, and always prepared when you need to go out once in a while!” 

He turns back around and heads to the trash can, as you, the blushing mess you are, sighs under your breath. 

Well, you definitely shine bright, alright.

Jeno stayed true to his word, of course escorting you out of your chamber of seclusion every chance he got. Whether it be through hasted coffee runs before your morning classes, or arcade expeditions on the weekends, you always found yourself tripping over your own two feet at the sway of his hand, awaiting his next adventure. It felt as if you were new in the city as he guided you around it, exploring all the sights and attractions your town had to offer. All these city-exclusive features you never bothered to glance at before, now finding themselves in your presence almost everyday. You didn’t know if it was because of your lack of knowledge of the outdoors, or simply who you saw every city splendor with, but you swear to god, they were beautiful. 

Whether to your dismay or utmost pleasure, however, you and Jeno grew connected at the hip, your different universities acting as nothing but a weak wall, waiting for it’s impending destruction as he decides to walk you home every night. 

“It’s the least I can do, this part of the city is dangerous at night after all.” he suddenly began, the pads of his thumbs clicking against the various knobs on the video game controller. The two of you were sat in front of your couch, stealing all the pillows and blankets from its possession, rendering it useless as you created a makeshift fort on the spot.  

“I don’t think I need protecting at night, Jeno.” you scowled, not bothering to look up from the book you could barely even focus on, due to the various screams and gunshots protruding from the screen. “You said it yourself, I’m a different kind of princess.” 

“Yeah, but, you’re still a princess,” he muttered, his words hardly reaching above the T.V. volume as another scream fell out of screen. “And a princess should always have their knight with them, right?” 

The room fell silent, Jeno’s eyes glued to the violent combat game, while yours stayed snug on the pages of your book. As another gunshot sounds off on the t.v, you both silently prayed that neither of you noticed each other’s cheeks as they grew more and more crimson.   

“So,” Jeno cleared his voice, eyes daring to glance at your figure, hunched over beside him like always. “Can I walk you home, Y/N?”

Your sigh was deeper than intended, and you couldn’t tell if it was in irritation or infatuation. “Of course.”

...

“Who knew the infamous apartment gremlin could ever step outside?” Renjun, your one campus friend, and employee at the 7days Cafe, swung his bag around his shoulders as you trotted out of class. The sunlight peeking through the emerald green leaves, and blinding you upon arrival; it all reminded you of him. That sunshine boy. 

As Renjun went on and on about how your only characteristic up till now was the fact that chocolate wrappers piled up your desk faster than any snow or leaf pile could, your mind began wandering. Visiting every arcade raid and coffee date that your mind stored with pure pleasure. Every time he waited at your doorstep every morning, and lingered around your campus after every class--sticking true to the promise he made just weeks before--all of it. Like a warm cup of tea, it felt snug, just right. A smile swiped across your lips subconsciously as Renjun’s eyebrows cocked upwards, an all too knowing smirk swiping across his. 

“But seriously, though, who was that guy you were with? A blind date? I don’t remember setting you up with anyone, though?” He inquired, recalling all the suspicious you-related sightings he saw that day.

“I can easily get a date by myself, thank you very much.”

“Are you hearing yourself right now?”

A giggle escapes your breath as Renjun pierces you with that intense stare once again, wanting, no, needing answers right this second. You sigh that same sigh, the one either filled with aggravation or adoration.

“It’s Jeno, he’s my new neighbor.” You continued. “He probably only started hanging out with me cause I’m practically the only one that lives on my floor besides him.” 

Only your best, and basically only friend could fish out the disappointment seeping through your voice, and Renjun did--effortlessly--as he gasped in the name of over-exaggeration. 

“Y/N, are you getting flustered?” he hunted, his words acting like a call for the red glow growing on your cheeks. His howling at the sight could’ve been heard miles away. 

“Shut up, Renjun.”

That same smirk grew 10x more sly, eyeing a sight far ahead of you. “Yeah you’re right, I should shut up, cause I’m definitely not drawing in more attention than your little coffee date over there.” Your head whipped up in response, the sight in front of you rendering you frozen, just waiting for his natural sun rays to melt your ice-cold stance. 

“Y/N! HEY!” his yelling, along with the attention of others shuffling around the campus, captured the attention of your heart. Jeno jogs up towards you, his backpack swishing left and right as Renjun slowly shuffles away, sending you a devious wink and an all knowing smirk before heading off his own way. 

 “Arcade?” Jeno exhaled, pleading for his breath to catch up to him. He glances up, eyes forming into those ethereal crescents as his lips perk up into a smile. You don’t even need to ask, dummy.

...

The trees shivered through the evening breeze as you and Jeno cloud the empty air with sounds of your soft steps. A pebble jolts under your feet as the two of you reside in reluctant silence, the only sound present being the irritable car engines swiftly passing by. The air in between you two grew tense--not that it wasn’t already tense the moment Renjun escorted himself out of the equation. This regular sunshine boy had stayed a little cloudy--too cloudy for your liking--  for a couple of days now. Gone were the days of constant rambling over pure nonsense, nonsense that made your heart burst into a thousand tiny pieces. In the past few days, he’s been silent, more than you thought he was capable of being. And you would rather die than admit it to him, but you missed it. You missed him. 

You couldn’t tell why he would miraculously grow mute around you, and only you, either. Were you too boring for him? Too unresponsive and detached for his liking? You always feared the day where he’d leave your desperate grasp for something newer, more alive, simply better. Yet you weren’t so much as worried for him, but rather for yourself. Could you handle it? Living in darkness for the rest of your life, the sun reluctant to shine around you? With no knight and shining armor to rescue with open arms? 

Your sulking figure props itself up as you saunter through the arcade doors. The arcade was a 20 minute walk from your campus. You shudder in response. How long was I stuck in my head like that? 

Like the child he is, Jeno happily trotts towards the various classic and retro games sprinkled around the coin-op. It was his favorite attraction of the city so far, easily trumping every cafe or stationary gym, and especially his “hell hole of a school” as he puts it. You grimace at the very fact that stayed in your mind, and head over to this arcade's only claw machine. 

Saying it was small would be a clear understatement, Yet it’s petite figure, coupled with its pastel pink exterior, provided a calmer, softer glow, compared to the chaos of the neon, flashing lights and rapid, unwinding gaming tickets that surrounded it. You studied the new additions of diverse toys that laid trapped within the transparent glass prison. Inside, a baby panda, a guinea pig, and a cute bunny all try to sway your hand into buying them, but only one contender out of the box of plushies catch your eye. A tiger, seated four or five plushies away from a tiny shark, entrances you with its sweet appeal, a rose-coloured ribbon laced around its neck, sealing the deal. You dig around your practically empty pockets, no quarters available in your grasp. As a defeated sigh escapes your lips, Jeno appears beside you, head cocked to the side as he examines the various toys for himself. 

  “These are cute,” he shoved his hands in his pockets, as if he was hiding behind some nonchalant facade you never knew about. He takes notice of the way your eyes sparkle as you stare at the tiger plushie. “Are you gonna play?”

“I can’t,” You held your head down in despair, fingers twiddling and picking at each other in utter embarrassment. “I don’t have any coins.” 

Jeno cleared his voice, scratching the nape of his neck with fingers lined with stress as he glances at you, flustered and embarrassed. Even if it was just cause of something as small as the toy tiger, you were still cute.

 And your endearing expression gave the most perfect idea. 

Jeno grumbled in annoyance. “I ran out, too, should we head home?” 

You shoot him a smile. “Sure.”

The two of you head out the door, Jeno grasping the handful of coins trapped in his pant pocket.

The afternoon sun swiftly melted into an evening night sky as you watch the white, little lights fully paint the exterior of your apartment building. The breeze grew harsher, and all you wanted right now was to be trapped in the walls of your tower once again. The silence that suffocated the two of you finally collapsed as Jeno cleared his throat. 

“Um, Y/N?” 

You turned your head “ Hm?”

“I won’t be able to walk you home tomorrow.” 

You would never admit it to his face, but your heart died a little that day. 

Curse you and your abeyant, pushover of a heart.  

“Oh, uh, ok.” 

...

The next day seemed more unappealing than most. You constantly found yourself moping around your apartment floor, disregarding school work you couldn’t care less about before. 

What broke your heart the night before, stepping into the broad doors of your supposed tower, wasn’t just the fact that he decided to leave your life right then and there, but because of how weak he's made your life into. You didn’t need him. You didn’t need human interaction in your life, the life you built solely on seclusion and the art of never leaving the comfort of your own home. You could always go back to the ways things were, burying your face into the words of your next novel, enjoying freshly brewed coffee with the coffee machine Renjun gave you, knowing very well he wasn’t going to see you for another month after that. You could always go back. You didn’t need Jeno. 

Right?

You shuffled towards your kitchen counter, the thought of that freshly brewed coffee making you salivate. 

You stop in your tracks. 

The jingle of house keys rattle through your door.   

He was home. 

You take a step forward, cursing at yourself in the process. But just like your first interaction, he acted like a magnet, pulling you towards him against every fiber of your being. Your hand gravitates towards the doorknob, but you decide against turning it when you hear a voice ringing from the outside. 

“I know, I know, leaving her to walk home alone was dumb but--hey! I still listen to your advice! I’ve been walking her home everyday before this!”

Jeno grows silent, and you grow confused. So walking me home was this guy’s idea?

“I just dunno what to do, Jaemin”  A thud hits your side of the apartment wall, along with the rattles of a… paper bag? “I just freeze up whenever I see her, my own neighbor, how pathetic am I?”

...neighbor? 

The silence resumes.

It stops.

“Yes! I won her a tiger plushie to cheer her up, what's so bad about it?” He sounded so defensive. It was cute. 

“But, Jaemin, seriously…”

Silence.

“...I might be in love, man.” 

The coffee pot almost collapsed in your hand right that second. It should’ve, at least, since your once proud, independent figure most definitely did. You rushed to your couch, the couch that held everyone of your favorite memory with him. Burying your face into the unwrinkled pillow, you don’t hesitate to perk your ears up when you notice that the ethereal conversation taking place just outside your door, wasn’t over just yet. 

Jeno giggles, each chuckle sends butterflies to your heart. “Yeah, Jaemin. I’m in love with Y/N. You gotta come visit, you’re in town, right?” 

...

“How many times do I have to tell you!? Flavouring first, AND THEN the milk!” Renjun grumbled, massaging his temples as he lectured the taller, two-toned hair, amateur barista, all while another younger looking boy with black hair and in a matching apron, howls loudly at the sight behind the 7days Cafe counter.  

You sat just parallel to the commotion, a warm cup of coffee enclosed between your two palms. Seconds after you heard Jeno’s apartment door close, you fled. Panic, excitement, and the thirst for what you hope was just a drink, riling up within you. You didn’t know who else to tell, who else to unload all these feelings to. Your mind went blank, more bare than the ivory walls that coated the interior of this very cafe. Renjun, however, took it surprisingly lightly. But you kind of understood, he had other things to worry about. 

“Chenle! Quit filming Jisung fuck up his latte! You can't even have your phone back here! Remember what happened last time?”

You wondered what this Chenle kid did to get Renjun so pissed like that as this supposed Jisung guy laughs back and his fellow amateur barista. 

An aggravated Renjun plops down on a stool on the other side of the counter, facing you as he wipes his hands on the towel placed on his shoulders.

“Damn high schoolers, such a pain.” he shudders, his voice low, but just enough to tick off his café students. “Anyways, about this Jeno thing,” You lean in closer, your coffee mug almost tipping over as you wait in anticipation.

“I fucking called that shit.” Renjun’s deadpanned expression causing you to lose 10 years of your life. “It was so obvious.”

“Obvious? How?” you scowled 

“Don’t worry, though. It's only obvious to people with basic social skills, so you’re off the hook.” he shoots you a sinister smile, as you shoot back with an overly offended glare. 

“Renjun, seriously.” you pleaded, catching the attention of the two other highschoolers behind the counter. “Well,” he continued, “No guy I know would want to walk a girl home EVERY DAY just for kicks. 99% of the time, they’re a simp for the chick.” You twiddle with your fingers, slightly disappointed in the fact that you never picked that up, despite your esteemed sharpness. 

“Not to mention how ecstatic he looked, like, every time you breathed near him.” 

“Ok but you’re not around us most of the time he breathes near me.” 

“Sweetie, I don’t have to be around you two all the time to know that’s exactly what happens.”

You grumble under your breath, not wanting to spare a glance at your supposed best friend, outsmarting every single thought that grazed your mind. 

“So, what do I do?” 

“Well, you like him back, right?” Slowly, you nod. Despite being the crux of problem presented, you were probably the most surprised out of the group.  

“Well then, go fucking tell him! Go!” he vigorously gestures towards the door, the liquid in your untouched mug swishing around, shaking in fear. 

You don’t take a second guess as you burst through the door, leaving a tired and sighing Renjun behind. 

“Hey, boss.” Chenle leaned against the counter as Renjun stood back up to continue his work. “Who does your friend like?” 

“None of your business, Chenle, now get to work!” Renjun snapped back, earning the shudders of both--now terrified--high schoolers. 

The chime on Café door sounds, and steps click towards the counter. Subconsciously, Renjun greets with the brand-wide slogan, followed by an unappealing “How may I help you today?” 

The figure in front of him, unfazed, continues the untasteful conversation. 

“Hey, the name’s Jaemin. Is there a guy named Jeno around here? I’m supposed to meet him.”

The towel once snug tight in Renjun’s hand, gracefully hits the floor. “Oh.”

...

You scramble to the tips of your feet seconds after the glass doors spread open. A tiny ding! chimes your way as you scampered inside, ignoring every uneven tile, medium sized pebble, and the devious tricks of your own untied shoelaces that bare a threat to your one chance to set things right. To finally let the sun shine around you once again. 

Reaching the elevators, you stop to catch your vanishing breath, all of your might used in stopping your exhales slowly slip away. You greet your--mostly unpleasing--reflection as you face the opening metallic doors, the whites of your eyes swelling as they meet up with dozens of other deadpanned expressions. 10 people, all enclosed in the walls of the vertical-travelling cart, limbs and torsos all clustered together at uncomfortably short distance. And despite the silence, not one set of eyes didn’t scream “Don’t you dare get in here.” right at your face. Of course, you huffed as you rushed towards the back of the apartment foyer. 

A door, hidden from plain sight, waits from your now exhausted figure, the word “Stairs” mocking you, plunging you straight into misery. Another huff blows out of your lips. You loved your apartment, but right now, it was being nothing but a total pain. God, ok. Here we go.

10 flights of stairs later, and you're nothing but a heaving, tired mess. Various hair strands string onto the sides of your face, while the sweat first formed on the 4th flight finally dried cold onto your lower back. You looked unhinged, psycho, and straight up not having a good time. But just like every time before, your sunshine boy can brighten up anyone’s day. 

 “Y/N?” A voice questioned, the vermilion and silver paper bag dropping to the ground in the name surprise. 

Fuck fuck fuck fuck. You clearly didn’t think this through. What is wrong with you, trying to confess to the guy you like while looking like an actual goblin. Why in the world would you listen to Renjun, half of the words that come out of his mouth are sarcastic?! You wince at his impending reaction, only sparing him a few glances every so often as the two of you stood frozen, trapped in each other’s presence.   

“Um, er--hi.” he stepped towards you and your gaping figure. A stride so light, one that could balance on feathers. Disregarding the paper bag from before, a hand dips inside, the bag rustling around as he pulls out… a toy? Not just a toy, but a plushie. That same tiger plushie that caught your eye that day, entrancing you with its rose-tinted ribbon. The same plushie you locked eyes with on the day your heart died, just by a little bit. 

Jeno stops in his tracks, scanning you. “Wait, why are you--did you take the stairs here?” 

You could only vigorously exhale, but you still forced out a response. “Ran. 10 flights.” he returns with a smile, a grin brighter than afternoon sun casting behind them. 

“I guess I’ll take over from here.” 

Jeno takes one last step forward, eyes, locked together in a trance. Faces just centimetres apart, nothing but the brisk indoor air roaming between you. Jeno glances down, his cheeks flushed a golden vermilion as he twiddles with the tiger paws held tightly in his tense fingertips. Your cheeks can’t help but fall into a deep crimson right after his, fidgeting with the ending fabric of your hoodie. The cool air that froze the sweat cascading down you back finally disappeared, leaving behind the warm, sensual, tingling feeling coming from your intertwined breaths. 

“Sorry,” he began. His eye contact encapsulating you, no matter how nervous it seems.  “Sorry for leaving you to walk home alone, I, er--I was being dumb. Really dumb.” He glances to the floor, breath shaking, with just an ounce of firmness. 

And exhale escapes his throat. “The truth is, well, I just get all shaky around you. I become flustered, I freeze, basically. And I thought that leaving you alone for a little while, shying away from you for a little bit, would clear my mind, would benefit me in any way. But I was wrong. So, so wrong.” Jeno grabs your hand, enclosing it around the soft, forged, fur of the tiger plushie.

“I knew I was right from the beginning, ever since I first dropped my last cardboard box to my feet in a desperate effort to greet you. I knew I always wanted to be around you, be with you. That’s why I walked you home every night, took you out for coffee every chance I took. I didn’t know what came over me, but I needed to stay with you. You’re my life source, ever since I moved into the secluded apartment complex. And now…”His eyes grew glossy as he shot you that crescent eye smile you fell in love with so easily. 

“I’m running out of excuses to be next to you, Y/N.”

A tug at your heart led it to the brink of destruction as your hands guided themselves to each side of Jeno’s face.  

“Can’t we just be together, now?”

Strangely enough the interaction brought memories to your mind more than anything. The way he’d go on and on about useless facts and unwanted knowledge, a trail of never ending words hurling at your direction. The way you’d sit in silence, admiring him, whether it be through how much he could say in one breath, or simply how he glowed underneath a simple streetlight.

You couldn’t pinpoint exactly when the tears flooded your vision, but you could tell something was wrong when you saw Jeno’s panicked expression. 

“Oh shit, wait, did I say something wrong--fuck, ok, um--please don’t cry, Y/N, I’m sor-”

You truly loved this boy, but he really needed to learn how to shut up. 

With your palms promptly placed onto Jeno’s cheeks, you pull him in, lips melting into each other with pure delight. Entranced, your two bodies fell closer, his hands clasped around each of your arms. The tiger plush danged from his fingers while yours roamed down to the collar of his salmon shirt, pulling it snug against you. 

Like contradicting magnets, the force needed to pull your love struck figures was vigorous. The need to breathe only slipped back into your mind once  you both gasped for air. The hands that once held your frame extended towards you, holding nothing but a soft tiger plushie, with a little pink ribbon to finish it off. You accept the toy with a smile, a smile--in Jeno’s opinion--shined brighter than any sunray or streetlight could. 

“I’d like that, being together and stuff.”

...

 The chime hooked onto the door of the 7days Cafe was fairly quiet on a regular day, but to the nervous, overly strained, “on the brink of ripping his hair out” Renjun, it was as loud as a fire alarm sounding off right next to him. Yet, he wasn’t the only tensed boy you noticed as you stepped into the beige coloured room, hand gripping onto the hand of your sunshine boy.  You simply put it off as another customer caught in the middle of his own rainstorm, but alas, you were wrong again when you watched Jeno’s eyes widen. 

“Jaemin! You made it!”

Glaz doesn’t mention how Kapkan has failed to give a straight answer so far, and instead defuses the tension with a bratty: “Guess I’ll just feed the leftovers to the neighbour’s dog then.”

He can basically hear Kapkan perking up at this, even if his back is turned. If possible, his lover would eat meat for literally every meal, and heated up for breakfast, he’s even more unable to say no. “You know I’d eat it out of her bowl if necessary”, he grumbles, the fire having died down as quickly as it reared up. Glaz has gotten extremely good at appeasing him over the years.

“I’ll take that as a yes then”, he summarises and tosses the scraps in question into the microwave. Self neglect is one of the largest red flags Kapkan wears on his back whenever it gets bad, and it’s the one Glaz will combat head on. It’s the one he’s allowed to mention as it doesn’t scream you’re abnormal, you’re ill, you’ve got issues – instead, he can disguise it as stress, something easily forgettable, low priority. As such, it’s easiest to deal with as he can remedy it immediately: suggest taking a bath together, which is something Kapkan never refuses, or he offers to cook, pretends he’s not feeling well and needs company so Kapkan joins him in bed early. Once there, his lover falls asleep quickly, but left to his own devices, he’d stay up till morning.

No, he doesn’t need to babysit him, Glaz informs his imaginary interviewer politely yet firmly. Kapkan can and does take care of himself. But if he can facilitate it, why shouldn’t he? He receives more than enough in return. Kapkan would die for him in a heartbeat, he knows this because it almost happened before, he’d do whatever Glaz demands of him, he’s a reliable presence in Glaz’ life, loving, supportive, strong. Their infatuation is mutual and not diminished by demons which are not Kapkan’s fault.

It’s difficult to predict how this episode will go. Some cumulate in a fight, be it verbal or physical, others peak unnoticeably and then ebb until Glaz nearly forgets about the whole thing, can’t imagine a universe where they aren’t the world’s most perfect couple. People often don’t appreciate their health until they fall ill. Glaz has learnt to fiercely appreciate the days on which every smile is teased out gently instead of requiring heavy machinery to surface.

They met in Spetsnaz, a perceived eternity ago, and by all rights should’ve separated unscathed instead of their lives intermingling the way they did in the end. Glaz’ hand to hand was rubbish and Kapkan consistently disappointed in him, leaving them both frustrated with each other, yet not to the point of memorability. Kapkan should’ve remained that morose instructor with the hard set to his mouth, and Glaz his largely incompetent yet well-meaning student of which he’s probably had plenty. Nothing about him was remarkable – nothing about either of them, really –, until some people fell ill and some others got married, and suddenly Glaz was accompanying his fellow Spetsnaz on an extended hunting trip. As if Glaz had been fifteenth in line for the throne and fate removed all fourteen in between, and now he was at his coronation, not entirely sure how he got here.

It wasn’t the two of them alone, of course, a few acquaintances and curious souls went with them, but overall not enough people to comfortably hide one’s personality for an entire month. This is when Glaz noticed that Kapkan, when talking about his passion, was easy to look at. The glint in his otherwise piercing pale eyes was contagious and Glaz inquired a lot more about hunting in general and Kapkan’s experience specifically than he’d originally intended.

Usually, Glaz falls easily, almost at the drop of a hat. Someone smiles at him wrong, someone does him an unexpected favour, and he’s gone. Lost. If this happens, it’s fleeting. But when it takes him a while to even realise he’s staring and hovering, it means it’s serious.

They require five years to get together.

During that time, they keep invading each other’s life almost by chance, end up assigned to the same place or on the same mission, and the grin he receives when they meet once more is a genuine one. Glaz longs for more and ever more: a laugh, then a touch, time spent alone, time spent alone that’s timeless and neverending in their minds. Every new bit which he almost wishes into existence he treasures and keeps it close to his heart so it warms him during the time between their meetings. This is how he thinks of his days now – either real, actual events, or merely waiting. When Kapkan isn’t there, reality loses its focus.

He doesn’t remember the words leading up the kiss and it’s something he regrets to this day. Vaguely, he recalls words too brazen and brash for his otherwise quiet, timid character, though they probably were nothing but innocent to others. But Kapkan – Kapkan understood, Kapkan who’s known him for years and can tell it’s unusual for him, and he let it happen. Despite nothing coming back, Glaz wasn’t under the impression of his flattery to bounce off the hard exterior, rather he noticed it penetrating the roughness, finding holes in its defence. Kapkan soaked it up. He refused to dance but admired Glaz’ efforts nonetheless. And so they kissed.

Kissed in full gear, the relief of an uneventful mission flooding their systems, perched in the snow next to each other and lost in conversation instead of paying attention to something their colleagues had under control anyway. A routine extraction, no support needed, and Kapkan pulled down the cloth hiding his lower face when Glaz offered him some warm coffee, and then their lips are touching, their breath visible in the icy air and Glaz’ shoulder killing him over this odd angle.

Despite going home alone that day, he got no second of sleep. His heart wouldn’t calm down, and neither his thoughts. I’m the happiest man alive, he thought, clear as day and not a doubt in his mind.

It does have its good sides. Two, as far as Glaz is concerned: Kapkan sticks to him like Velcro to wool, knowing nobody else can keep him in check the way his lover does. The worse it gets, the more excuses pop up to stay at home, to go out alone, to take Glaz along. He doesn’t mind switching topics and reading body language like a hawk if he can hold Kapkan’s hand in return, witness his dry wit and remarkable patience.

The second positive side effect is linked to the first. Being around each other constantly leads to certain things.

Glaz takes his time because he knows Kapkan likes it this way. He follows their established routine and discards his sweater first without revealing any skin on his torso. This time, the climax announces itself. Like a freight train, it makes itself known from quite a distance away, whereas Glaz is chained to the tracks; he’s got a date and even a time when he’ll be able to stare into the conductor’s eyes. He realises with horror that he’ll have to ride this one out, no way around it: Kapkan is scheduled for the exercise and found out before Glaz did, eliminating the possibility of approaching Harry about it. His defence would’ve been weak yet honest – in the moment, Kapkan will act and react exactly like his intensive training ingrained in him, no doubt about it. It’s the after which causes Glaz considerable anguish. But re-assigning him would draw his attention and then Glaz would bear the brunt of it personally and not by association.

Kapkan has been getting worse for a while now, his light, restless sleep a good indicator for rising agitation, and as soon as he hears about the exercise, he knows. No way around this either: he knows. Stubborn as he is, he’ll walk right into it expecting a different outcome, will deny any parallels locked in his mind between watching his colleagues go down, not knowing where the shots were coming from, expecting to be next, and experiencing much of the same in a controlled setting. I know it’s not real, he says, and then a different voice must pop up in his mind later: But this was. Remember? Let me remind you.

Glaz is fully aware of what will happen and Kapkan too, and still inaction is his best option. He distracts him with little sessions of having Kapkan describe a mutual acquaintance or friend while drawing exactly what he says and then prompting outraged chuckles when he presents the final result. He cooks every day, either breakfast or dinner, and Kapkan lets him. This is what worries Glaz the most, because he’s sure Kapkan can tell he’s walking on eggshells around him, and instead of calling him out on it, he accepts it quietly. Seems to appreciate the kid gloves. He’s never done this before, and it’s terrifying.

Two days before the scheduled catastrophe, Glaz finds himself in the kitchen, staring at the open cutlery drawer and catching himself wondering where he should stow it all. It takes him a long while to realise he’s crying, and even longer to understand why – Kapkan is in good hands tonight, out with people Glaz knows he can trust, and he’s had a relaxing evening involving a long bath, a good film, and delicious leftovers. He should be feeling better than he did all week, yet it’s achieved the opposite effect: all the pent-up tension is flowing out of him in salty droplets now that he doesn’t need to be painfully aware of his surroundings at all times. His joints are aching and he’s shivering; stress has caught up with him as well as all the thinking he postponed to less rainy days.

He thinks about how eerily calm Kapkan has been. How much he has postponed as well.

Slamming the drawer shut, he heads straight to bed and ignores the icy tendrils curling around his limbs, even though they only recede once Kapkan has joined him hours later.

The next morning, his outburst and physical discomfort become crystal clear, though the newfound explanation does nothing to quell Glaz’ dread. He’s ill.

Neither the first time nor the last he’s dragged himself into work despite a fever, though most of his co-workers care enough to point out his paleness. Staring back from the mirror is an ashen-faced shadow of a man drenched in sweat, and though it’s probably only the flu, the implications are far-reaching. Depending on whether he gets better today or not, he won’t be able to work tomorrow. Or accompany Kapkan. Cushion his fall.

At the end of the day, it seems an impossibility – concentrating on anything requires much more brain capacity than he has to spare, and keeping himself hydrated and fed is a task so monumental he can’t possibly shoulder it twice. Barely does he notice Kapkan shoving him into the shower to wash off the uncomfortable clamminess left on his skin, and the next time he’s lucid, he’s in bed with a jug of water on the nightstand. He must’ve been forced to take some medicine as the aching isn’t as bad anymore, he no longer feels like shedding his own skin and the pounding in his head has subsided. Like this, he can hardly depend on himself.

The air is fluffy snow on his skin, impeding his movements and causing his teeth to clack together as he fights his way to the living room, intent on spending every minute he can in Kapkan’s presence to soothe them both. All he gains, however, is an angry snarl and a manhandling the way he came – his lover isn’t having any of it. Still. He remains by Glaz’ side and he probably has his own pitiful whining to thank for it. Throughout the rest of the evening and the night, whenever he wakes up, there’s a solid presence behind his back. And even if Kapkan barely sleeps himself, he stays right where he is.

Waking up to an empty bed is a blow Glaz could do without. He feels better – marginally –, but what sends him into a full blown panic is the realisation that it’s out of his hands now. However Kapkan reacts today, he won’t be present to absorb the shock, and he can’t figure out the best course of action when he’s ignorant of what happened. Calling someone else to inquire in detail seems messy as it’d get them talking, meaning all he can do is wait.

So he waits.

Waits like someone on death row, barely touches the food Kapkan placed next to the refilled jug and skims the books next to the food listlessly. And waits. Waits for the inevitable jingling of keys, steps which might be soft or loud or disorientated, maybe the calling of his name. Several hours, he waits for it and when it happens, he’s still not ready.

“How do you feel?”, is Kapkan’s only question as he helps Glaz up, wraps him in a spare blanket and changes the soaked sheets.

He takes an eternity to answer. “Better”, he says through the headache and the shivering.

A stern glance. “You’ve always been a horrible liar.” And that’s that.

They spend the evening next to each other once more, Kapkan devouring his dinner while awkwardly perched on the mattress and reading something on his phone, and Glaz still waits. It’ll happen. It can happen any moment now, he knows this, knows the exercise took place as he got a text about it, and so he waits.

He recovers over the weekend and returns to work on Monday. They went for a few walks which left him weak but sharper-minded due to the fresh air, but as much as he scrutinises the mild-mannered man by his side, he finds no indicators of a lurking rage, simmering deep below. He knows it’s there. He knows it will surface in some way, maybe not directed at the environment but inwards.

Kapkan showers without a reminder. He brings Glaz meals and drops a comment about Glaz’ schedule being so messed up he doesn’t even know when to eat anymore. He tries to draw a squirrel for half an hour and only stops because Glaz is dizzy from laughing so much.

Gradually, he stops waiting. Healthy again, he knows he can deal with it whenever it comes, and so he focuses on the present.

And it never happens.

About four months later, Kapkan snaps at a grocery clerk for something insignificant. He leaves Glaz drooling, panting, shuddering and wholly satisfied that night after two hours of rigorous teasing. The next day, he jumps a foot in the air over someone dropping their phone.

A few people ask Glaz whether Kapkan is alright. He just smiles and assures them that yes, he’s doing fine. No, he doesn’t need any support. Yes, he’s got it all under control.

This time, he doesn’t need to justify himself to anyone made up.

That evening, he develops a fierce headache. It turns into a migraine so bad he can barely walk, so he whispers to Kapkan that he’s going to bed early and no, he doesn’t need to join him, he’ll be alright, he doesn’t need anything, and still he’s encased in strong arms not five minutes later and forced to swallow a pill which he instead hides under the mattress. He suggests some ice cream might help, and a shoulder massage, and miraculously, he feels much better the next morning.

When he enters the kitchen, Kapkan is whistling to himself, horribly out of tune and unconcerned who might hear him. He only whistles on good days.

“Better?”, he greets Glaz with a tone implying it’s Glaz’ own responsibility to remain healthy, but pulls him to his chest regardless, carding a hand through his hair gently. He’s soft. When Glaz nuzzles him with his nose, he lets out a low chuckle which reverberates in Glaz’ own torso. He’s never felt this safe.

“Yes”, he mumbles against warm skin. “Much better.”

What does family mean?

So I posted this as a reblog on my post about wanting some Timephoon Louie angst and I’m going to make this separate post as well. 

It was a ton of fun to write and I really took on a life of its own. I will post on A03 later this week.

Louie’s hand slipped off the tubs spoked knob, his heart pounding in his ears as he regained his grip. He willed his hands to stop shaking, he couldn’t mess this up. A panicked glance at the advancing mob gave him the extra boost he needed to finish adjusting what he needed. He jumped on the top, pointing the shower head at the growing crowd of past citizens of the world. The blue light blinded him as everyone was returned to their proper time. 

He stood there, waiting in the silence of the halls. Not completely silent though, he could hear the ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner. The seconds quite literally ticked by, adding together into minutes upon minutes. Soon those minutes added together for a far greater amount than it should have. He should have fixed everything. 

His hands begin to shake violently, nothing compared to the jitter that they were when he was trying to get the tub to work. His chest felt tight, his throat tightening with each baited breath. He climbed down from the tub, eyeing the foyer with failing hope. 

“Guys?” There was no response. The ticking of the seconds continued to be the only sound. 

“Huey, Dewey, come on…” Louie curled into a ball on the floor. The painful pressure continued to build behind his eyes, or was it on the rims of his eyes? Both? Doesn't matter, just that he was crying, the silence quickly filled with the sounds of his heaving breaths and broken sobs. 

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, you can come back now, I learned my lesson.” He choked out, screaming into the very empty, too large mansion.

He wished to hear Mrs. Beakley’s lecturing tone, berating him for his latest stunt. Webby playing peacemaker, maybe even telling him about all the things he did wrong in that logical voice of hers. To hear Scrooge lecture him about the value of hardwork. 

Heck.

He even wanted to hear Della's, his moms, voice. They might still have a rocky relationship, but he wanted to try. Wanted to try. 

He looked up, gasping in horror. The walls were rotted and dust heavily sat upon everything. He stood up, spinning in a wide circle. The tub sat at the foot of the stairs, rusted and falling apart. 

"No!" He rushed to the tub, wanting to touch it, but knowing deep down, he shouldn't. Why were his hands so big? When did he get so old? Where had all the time gone?

He hadn't just failed, he had been alone for years. He had killed his brothers. Sent them far away from him, to suffer through the past alone. Leaving him to suffer through the future alone. 

He gasped, hands gripped in the sheets tangled around his body. He felt as though he was being punched in the chest, over and over. He couldn't make out the bottom of Dewey's bunk, even though he knew it was there. Just a black void. 

He slowed his breathing, carefully sitting up, knees to chest, head thrown in his hands. 

The nightmares wouldn't stop. It has been months, and he just couldn't shake it. What's more his mother's words continued to plague his mind, every living moment. They just played on repeat. 

Your little scheme to bypass the present almost cost us our future"

He had always wondered who she was exactly thinking about when she said those words. Was he considered, or did he get in the way of her perfect little family of three? 

"I watched your brothers blink out of existence because you wanted a short cut to riches" 

'I watched them disappear too.' He smacks himself in the head, self loathing boiling in the pit of his stomach like it does every time he has a nightmare. 

He had never been apart from Huey or Dewey. They had always been together. He was lost without them. He needed them to get him out of trouble. Trouble he always got himself into. 

"Your plans- your schemes- they only lead to bad things for your family" 

He always put on the air of not caring, of being completely self-focused and distant. That he didn't need anyone, but that wasn't true. He always needed his brothers. 

He was trying to help the only way he knew how. He wasn't special like Huey or daring like Dewey. He was just plain old Louellyn Duck. The youngest, last, forgotten triplet. 

Della (he couldn't bring himself to call her mom to himself quite yet) hadn't really gone out of her way to get to know him. 

She spent most of her time with Dewey and any leftover time with Huey. She tried sitting with him on the couch once, but quickly left. 

Before the Timephoon incident, he tried getting her involved with one of his schemes. She wasn't paying attention as he talked, quick to shoot down the idea. She refused to see him. To know him. 

He had tried, and tried and tried. He tried to see what Scrooge was talking about, with them seeing all the angles and him being like Della. That was just one angle he couldn't see. Not anymore. 

"You took off in that contraption without thinking about the consequences or the people you would hurt" 

Maybe they were more alike after all.

"Classic Louie" That's what Dewey had said. 

Louie lays his head down on his knee, watching the small patch of moon flicker on the floor, the clouds moving quickly across the sky. 

But he had one thing Della never would. The last ten years of his life with his brothers. Even if he almost threw that all away in an instant. Just thinking about it made him sick to his stomach. 

"If you want to be a part of this family...you've got to stop" 

Louie couldn't hold it back anymore, the tears were soft, falling in big, fat, silent drops. Those words alone spoke volumes about how Della, who was supposed to be his mom, really felt about him. 

He wasn't what she wanted. Whatever image she had built up in her head, he clearly didn't meet it. He was a disappointment. A fraud. Not truly a part of this family. What did family mean to Della, if she made such a point of him understanding what family was. To her, he had to be someone he wasn't.

But it wasn't for a lack of trying. He tried to put in more effort for things that didn't catch his interest. He helped Huey with Junior Woodchuck achievements. Whatever Dewey wanted to do that day, that's what he did. He even took up reading history to help Webby. 

Even all of that was selfish though. He was afraid to be alone. Afraid that if he looked away from just a moment, they would be gone. 

He slipped from his bed, his bare feet barely making a sound as he walked across the room to the chair he had taken up as his post. He barely slept anymore, content to sit and watch his brothers sleep, finding small comfort in their presence. 

He watched Dewey sleep in a position that could not be comfortable. His head was twisted, with one arm behind it and the other haphazardly over the side of his bunk along with a leg. His other leg was bent inward. Good thing he's a flexible kid. 

Huey however always slept perfectly tucked in, both hands resting on his stomach, feet pointed up from under his blanket. 

Louie smiled at them, hugging his knees to himself. He loved his brothers with all his heart, more than riches, more than pep, more than himself. Definitely more than himself right now. 

Slowly, the sun rose. And with that Louie moved from his chair, content that his brothers were safe without him watching them for a few minutes. 

He got ready for the day, the new habit of being up before Huey a bewildering change to aforementioned boy. Louie smiled to himself, but it was not out of joy. Huey tried to get him to explain why he was suddenly up so early, not accepting any excuse he gave. Louie would never tell them the real reason. 

He had asked the night of the Timephoon what had happened to them. They still haven't told him. They had both looked off to the side, rubbing their arms in discomfort, clear distaste at the question. He left them alone after that, taking the hint that they didn't want to talk to him. They said they forgave him, but it was clear he wasn't trustworthy right now. That scared him too. 

He cleaned the room silently, a morning routine established out of fear of losing his brothers to his inherent selfishness. They couldn't be mad at him if he pulled his own weight from now on. He could prove his value to this family, even if it was just cleaning up messes. 

"Louie what are you doing?" 

He jumped, careful to not turn around to face Huey. He continued to pick up clothes and toys. 

"Cleaning."

"At 5:30 in the morning?" 

"It's the best time, don't you think. The rest of the day freed up from at least one chore."

"You always, well used to, sleep till 9. What is going on? You hate helping with chores"

"Can't I just help my brothers?" Louie muttered, hating the integration. "Don't you like the new me?" 

"Well, its nice, sure, but you aren't you" 

Louie stopped, arms full of discarded items. He still hadn't turned around. If he looked at Huey now, he knew he would break. Who was he? Who did his brothers want him to be? Huey admitted he liked the changes Louie had taken on, but it wasn’t enough. 

"Louie," Huey said softly, directly behind him. When had he gotten off the top bunk? He tucked his head into his chest. 

"Lou, you can talk to me," his hand gently resting on his shoulder, a slight pressure trying to pull him around. 

"Nothing to talk about. Everything is fine" 

"Nothing is fine. You're not sleeping, you barely eat anymore, and just seem so-" Huey stops, his voice starting to rise. 

"Lou, we are worried about you," This time Louie does turn around, surprised to see Dewey up and standing with Huey. 

They just stare at each other. Louie's gaze goes from one boy to the next. Ironically, they both have identical expressions of concern.

"Louie, is it something we did? Or Scrooge? We can help fix it." Huey says gently, removing his hand from his shoulder, instead clapping them tightly in front of his chest. 

Louie rears back in shock "What?" 

"Yea Louie, let us help fix it." 

"Unless you can help fix me, then there's nothing you can do" the words are spoken without thought. He couldn't help but feel slightly angry that they would blame themselves and even Scrooge (a man of many faults mind you) before placing any blame on Della. 

Maybe he had no right to feel the way he does and Della is right and he's just too selfish and inner focused to see it. Maybe he really doesn't belong in this family. 

Huey looks at him with heartbreak, while Dewey just looks at him in confusion. 

"There's nothing to fix Louie. You're fun the way you are" 

"Yeah, we wouldn't be the same if you were different" 

That's true, if Louie was different, then things would be better. Not how they were right now. If Louie could just be different, if tried hard enough to prove to his brothers and everyone else that he could be who they wanted him to be, things would be better again. 

"I don't fit in. I don't belong. So I have to change to make things better" He argued back. 

He starts putting things away, trying to end the conversation. He knows he's being rougher with the toys then necessary, throwing them into the chest and onto the shelf, but he doesn't care right now. He's on edge and he wants out of this room. 

"Of course you belong!" Dewey exclaims in bewilderment. 

"Where did you even get such an Idea?!" Huey sounds furious. 

"Doesn't matter," he mutters again, wishing he had changed into his hoodie. He felt far too vulnerable in his nightshirt. 

"Did someone say that to you? Thats stupid!" Louie is surprised at Huey's anger, and with that one distracting thought, he is unable to control the flinch he makes at Huey's words. 

Dewey notices, looking at him with searching eyes. "Who said that to you Louie? Is that what all this is about?" 

"This?" He mumbled weakly, hoping to change the subject away from their inquiries. They both loved Della too much for him to bring his own dislike for her into the mix. It would make this already terrible morning worse. 

"The waking up in the middle of the night, the crying, the sudden interest in anything we do, all the cleaning..." Huey lists off more, but Louie stops listening.

 Louie just looked at them, feeling his chest being punched once again. His palms felt clammy and he tried really hard to keep his breathing under control. He turned away from them, curling into a ball on the floor. He can’t hear anything except for the blood rushing through his head, and the air entering and leaving his body. 

"I'm going to get mom," Dewey announced, already moving towards the door. 

"No!" Louie lunges after Dewey, tackling him to the floor. 

"Why not? She can help!" Dewey snaps, "She makes everything better!" 

"No she doesn't!" 

"Yes she does!" 

"I don't want to talk to her!"

"Then talk to us!" Dewey snaps again, looking agitated at Louie's refusal to get Della involved. 

If Della came here she would just scold him again. He'd probably get grounded again because he upset Huey and Dewey and nothing he said would make her listen. 

He clamped his beak shut, just vigorously shaking his head. He can feel himself starting to cry again, hands unable to keep their grip on Dewey's cloths as the nerves course through his body. 

"If you want to be a part of this family...you've got to stop" 

He just needed to stop. 

"Stop what Louie?" 

"Stop being me" he whispers, hiding his face with his hands. He was such a screw up, he could do nothing right. All he could hear was his breathing again, then he felt the hot wet tears on his face again. 

"Louie calm down" Huey hugs him tightly, his body shaking with his own. "You're ok" 

"Louie…" Dewey sat down next to them, putting a hand on his knee. 

"I'm sorry, really really sorry. I mean it!" 

"Sorry about what?" 

"All the trouble I cause, all the problems I started, for making you worry" Louie rambles, trying to list everything and nothing at the same time. 

"Hey we never stop worrying about you, you're our baby brother" Huey strokes his head, holding him tighter. 

"You don't cause problems.." Dewey's own voice starts to shake. 

"Please don't leave me" he chokes out, grabbing on to Huey and Dewey, "I promise I'll change, just please don't leave me" 

Neither boy knows what to say to that, only they can hold him and exchange concerned looks over his head. Eventually Louie falls back asleep, Huey gently tucking him in and following Dewey out of the room. 

They both still don't say anything until they feel they are a safe enough distance not just from their room, but the rest of the occupants of the mansion as well. 

"What started all this?" Dewey whisper yells, clearly still on edge from Louie's melt down.

"I have an idea..I think it was the Timephoon" Huey whispered back. 

"That was forever ago!"

"Yeah but we never really talked about it with him" Huey thinks back to the few weeks he was stuck in the old west. How he struggled to hide in plain sight and how alone he was. 

When he first arrived, he was scared. Then he was angry. Angry at Louie and his stupid selfish get rich quick scheme. Angry that he was alone. Terribly alone. Then suddenly he was back in the foyer. 

He was dazed for a moment, all anger at his brother instantly being replaced with worry has he helped him stand. His hands shook and he offered a wobbly smile. He quickly turned to Dewey, grabbing his face in clear relief. 

Huey still felt angry and definitely found it hard to forgive him. He said the words, they both went through the motions. He could tell that Louie just thought he had to say sorry and that would clean his hands of the whole mess. Huey didn't feel as though he really understood what he put everyone through. His reaction to Moms grounding felt pretty obvious. 

But maybe Huey didn't understand what that whole event put Louie through? 

Dewey looked at Huey, trying to understand why Louie would be having a melt down about that now. 

Sure he had entered up with Webby in one of the greatest eras of all time. Sure he had been alone-ish, without his brothers, for a week. Dewey tried really hard not to think poorly of the experience, after all, it was just another adventure. Another adventure without his brothers or his mom. 

When Louie had asked about where they went, Dewey suddenly realized that time had only passed for a few minutes while he had spent a week away from his family. 

His mom had only gotten back, and he almost lost her all over again. He didn't want to be angry with Louie, but when he asked that question, Dewey couldn't find it in himself to tell him how he was really feeling about the whole thing. Best to just bury it deep inside and forget about it. 

Clearly Louie had not forgotten about it. 

“How can we help if he wont talk to us?” Dewey is frustrated and needs something to do to make things better, and Louie wouldn’t give it to him. 

“He really didn't want us to get mom” Huey murmurs, rubbing his hands together anxiously. Dewey stops his pacing, looking back towards the bedroom. 

“Why?”

“Think about it Dewey, has she ever spent time with Louie? Does she understand him? Like we do?” 

“I’m sure she has..wasn’t there that time, no we were there, or the, nope that was just us” Dewey drifts off into his outloud musings. 

“I’m not saying mom was in the wrong to ground Louie, but I think the whole thing could have been handled better” Huey cuts him off, Dewey growing frantic in trying to think of a time Mom and Louie had spent together. 

“Better?”

Huey rubs his arm in discomfort, “I was, still am a little, mad at him for the whole thing. I was alone for weeks Dewey. Weeks!” 

“I know what you mean, I almost lost mom again” He says it bitterly, speaking the feelings aloud for the first time ever. They both stand in silence, both processing their feelings on the matter internally. 

“I feel like there is something we are missing, and I think it has to do with mom” Huey is the one to break the silence. 

“He would be even more ticked if we went to her without him knowing,” Dewey chimes in, making his way back to the bedroom, “you’re right. He really didn’t want us to get mom.”

They slowly open the door, relieved to see him still on his bunk, chest rising steadily. They get dressed quietly, leaving a note for him. He needed to sleep and the family would understand. 

“We should try to see what we can learn from mom, without directly asking her.”

“How do we do that?”

“Dunno, I’ll come up with something though” They enter the dining room, taking their usual seats, both eyeing the empty one between them with worry. Mrs. Beakley places their breakfast down, Huey stopping her before she places one at Louie’s seat. 

“Louie isn’t feeling good today, he’s still asleep”

“What is he ok?” The boys look at Mom who was halfway into her chair, she looks back the way she had come. 

“Yea, we took care of him, he just needs sleep” Dewey chimes in, shoving a forkful of pancakes into his mouth. He calls out a muffled thank you to Mrs. Beakley who sighs a comment about manners. 

“Are you sure, I should go check on him” Mom is fully out of her chair now.

“He needs to be alone right now,” Huey quickly adds. If Mom was to wake up Louie now, things would probably only get worse. “Trust us.”

“Oh ok,” She sits back down, sending a longing look out the door once more. That was a good sign. 

“It's a shame Louie isn’t feeling good today, I needed his help on getting this old spell book from the city archives,” Lena surprisingly contributes to the conversation. Normally she only interacted with Webby. 

“Louie should know better than to help you with what sounds like an illegal activity” Mom glares at Lena. 

Lena eyes her, studying her, “Louie is good at that stuff, makes it more fun too.” She finished with a shrug.

“Yeah! Louie is so smart!” Webby chimes in, bouncing in her seat, “I really hope he feels better soon!” Lena rolls her eyes fondly at her energy. 

“He always comes up with the best adventures” Dewey chimes in, hopping on Webby’s hype train, “It’s been awhile since we have had one” He sits back down, remembering the morning, and why they need to figure out what happened. 

“Good, it means he’s learning,” Mom’s tone seems to hold a bitterness to it, but Huey felt he could be imagining it. 

“What's wrong with Louie’s adventures?” Webby asked. She wasn't malicious about it, rather she just seemed confused. 

“He needs to be aware of others outside himself, and when he learns that he can plan adventures, not schemes, with you guys again.”

The boys exchange a look, Huey quickly looks at the empty seat, then Mom. Dewey frowned, feeling a protectiveness burst within his chest. Louie was always thinking about others. He disguised it with selfishness, but he was always thinking about them. 

“Louie is very aware of others” Dewey spat the words before he really thought about who they were directed at. Why was Mom saying something so untrue about his baby brother. 

She blinked at him in shock, her mouth hanging open slightly. Dewey was starting to get the feeling that Mom was the one to say something bad to Louie. He really didn’t want to see her. Huey’s eyes darted between Dewey’s clouded expression and Mom’s surprised one. 

“Good Morning Everyone!” Scrooge cheerful calls out, taking his seat at the head of the table. Webby and Lena offer weak greetings, eyes glued to the growing drama at the other end of the table. Scrooge, lowers his paper, taking notice of the lack of greeting from his nephews. He eyes Dewey’s uncharacteristically angry expression, remembering the last time he saw it was when he told the kids about what happened to their mother. Even more surprised to see it aimed at said mother, who seemed just as surprised at her son's anger. 

“Have you not noticed how hard he’s been working? Or how tired he is all the time?”

Della stutters, a heartbroken expression wrinkling around her eyes. Huey and Dewey wait patiently. “I thought he was always like that...I...I didn’t see anything different” 

“Mom have you ever really spent time getting to know him?” Huey quietly askes, but Scrooge can hear the steel edge to his words.

“Of course-”

“No, I don’t think you have” Dewey cuts her off, “If you did then you wouldn’t, you wouldn’t” Dewey struggles to find the words, turning to Dewey to finish for him. 

“You would notice these things.” That wasn’t what Dewey was trying to say, but it was good enough. Mom seemed to put Louie down, judge his actions harsher than their own and pushed him aside. He just couldn’t understand why. 

Lena grabs Webby, quietly slipping from the room. Scrooge sat there, eyeing the family in discomfort. He raises his newspaper, taking refuge behind its ridiculous size and equally ridiculous stories. 

“Guys, I-”

“Why don’t you love him like you love us?” Dewey snaps. Huey is surprised by Dewey’s temper. Normally he would be the one screaming and yelling, not Dewey. He was also surprised at how he was talking to Mom. He loved her so much, but then again, family can lead to the worst sense of betrayal. And Huey thinks Dewey feels very betrayed right now.

“Of course I love him! He’s my son.” She sounds desperate now. Yes of course she loved him-

“But do you like who he is?” Huey asks quietly, having taken hold of Dewey’s wrist, both of them sharing Louie’s vacant seat now. 

“What?” She sounds offended. 

"You don't have to like family, but you can still love them" Hurt glanced over at Scrooge, who had flinched, crinkling his newspaper. 

"Of course I like him" Della quickly defends, staring at her boys with fear. 

"Then spend time with him" 

"Take an interest in what he actually likes to do. It's nice having him help with my badges but he hates it." 

Both boys get up from the table, breakfast unfinished and they waddle out of the room, "we are going to go check on Louie now" they said in their rare moments of spoken unity. 

Della sits there in a moment of defeat, the silence deafening. Scrooge slowly lowers his paper, looking at his niece with find sympathy. 

"The lads have a point dear."

"I feel like the worst mom ever. I will never stop feeling like the worst mom ever" 

"Della dear, you have been back in their lives for only a few months now. All of you have had a decade worth of experiences without each other. I would expect at least that long to properly get to know each of your boys"

"But Louie just-" she glanced at the door, standing and moving to sit closer to Scrooge. 

"I can't let him make the same mistakes as me."

"Ya don't think Donald hasn't spent all his time raising them to be great children?" 

She shakes her head before resting her head in her hand, gazing at the door sadly. Of course her brother would ensure they would turn out different from herself. She knew she had been selfish and rash. The last time they spoke, had been their ugliest fight yet. If anyone would try to ensure the past didn’t repeat itself, it would be him. 

"Louie has an entrepreneurial spirit and looks for the quickest and easiest solutions to his problems. Whether that holds true afterwards is always left to be seen but the kid has a drive, it just needs to be directed, not squished" 

Della deflates even more, "awe lass don't beat yourself up too much. This whole thing is a learning experience for all of yews" 

"I wish this was easier" 

"Every parent does lass" 

The boys trudge back down the hall, Dewey still boiling hot and Huey eager to get back to Louie. They quietly open the door, peaking in slowly. 

Louie was awake and had a wide eyed far off look of fear. He was breathing heavy and was drenched with sweat. His death grip on his pillow spoke volumes to them. He was crying again, and hadn't removed his gaze from the wall in front of him. 

Huey approached first, Dewey closing the door behind them softly. Even when he got on the bed, Louie didn't react, only continuing to stare at the wall. Dewey crawled on next, pulling Louie into a bone crushing hug. He looked down, reaching up to grab his arm. Huey joined in on the other side. 

“I’m sorry. Sorry we never talked sooner, sorry we didn't care, sorry for everything” Huey whispered. 

“Huey..” Louie murmurs.

“Me too Louie. Sorry I forgot about you. Sorry for being a terrible big brother”

“S-kay”

“It really isn't,” Dewey cant put any real force behind the words. 

They all move to laying down. Huey and Dewey look at Louie, while he stares at the wood above them. Huey ran his fingers through his head feathers and Dewey continued to squeeze with all his might. 

“What is family?” He finally speaks. 

“Messy.” Dewey answers.

“Biological” Huey quips. 

“Are we family?”

“No we are best friends. That's something totally different” Huey reassures. He may not have chosen his brothers at first but he did now. Family could be an obligation, but they never would be. He chose them, and always would. 

“Duck brothers forever” Dewey adds. Louie sniffs, the threat of more tears imminent. 

“So if I never stopped scheming and continued to hurt you you would never leave me?”

“I won't lie and say the Timephoon incident didn't hurt me,” Huey answers, speeding up the soothing gestures of his hands when Louie stiffened beside him, “But even that would never make me hate you, and that was pretty bad.”

“Louie, I really don’t get why you want to change, you’re good the way you are.” Dewey’s anger had long since burned out. “What did Mom say to you?”

“What?”

“Stop avoiding the question, I didn’t just get into a fight with Mom for no reason. Now spill”

“You got into a fight with Del-Mom?” Louie’s disbelief is echoed internally by Huey. It was a hard thing to imagine. 

“Yes, now spill” He demands again. 

Louie turned his head, surprised by Dewey’s serious and determined expression. “She said that if I wanted to be a part of this family I had to stop.”

“Stop what” Huey was quick to ask, reaching a hand across Louie to calm Dewey. He was angry too. What kind of mother said such a thing? Threatening to kick him out of this already dysfunctional family because what, he wanted to ensure he or his brothers never lived in poverty again? 

“Stop scheming, stop planning. They only lead to bad things for you guys anyway” He felt and sounded so defeated. 

“I mean I almost lost you guys. It wasn’t on purpose, but still, I almost did that.” Louie could feel his panic rising as the choppy remnants of his last dream resurfaced. His brothers had willingly left him that time. Nothing he did could change their minds. He didn’t try hard enough. He tightened his grip around Dewey’s arm and pushed himself further into Huey. 

“Louie we know that you were just trying to help in your own way,” Dewey tries not to wince at Louie's grip. 

“What if I hadn’t been able to bring you guys back? What if I had been alone forever? What if I mess up again, and you guys really do leave?”

“Woah Louie calm down, that didn’t happen and won't happen. I promise.”

“You can’t promise something like that Huey. Even you don’t know that” 

“You’re right, but I can promise that I, we, will never leave you” 

“Stuck with us forever. Mom just has to accept that” 

“I’m not what she wants.” Louie whispers. 

“She just doesn’t understand you. We know you, that's all that matters” They had tangled themselves together into a more comfortable cuddle pile. 

“Next time you have a nightmare, come get us please. We will help remind you of the truth” Huey is the one to make the request, but Dewey quickly nods along. Louie relaxes between them, closing his very sore eyes, hoping to lessen the headache that had built up. Huey continued his menstrations and Dewey was trying his hardest to lay still. 

“I’m going to go get you some food and water” Dewey detangles himself, Louie smiling. He knew Dewey couldn’t sit still for long. At the sound of the door closing, he closes his eyes once more. 

“If It makes it better, Mom really didn’t realize she messed up.”

“Not really. It wasn’t like I didn’t try to connect with her”

“I know.”

“I miss Uncle Donald. He understands”

“He will be home soon, I’m sure of it” 

There was a gentle knock at the door, both boys glancing at it in confusion until Della poked her head through. 

“Hey boys, oh where’s Dewey?”

Louie stiffened, pulling the covers up to his chin, turning towards Huey. If Della noticed she didn’t show it. Huey glanced at her warily. 

“Getting Louie some food and water,”

“That’s nice of him, how’re you doin bud?” Della kneels besides the bed, reaching towards him. He pulls back, burying himself under the covers. Huey moved to sit up, keeping one hand on his head and the other on his arm. He wiggled so his head was in his lap. 

“Why did you threaten to kick him out of the family?” Louie listens carefully. 

“I didn’t say that.”

“Yes you did!” He shouted from beneath the covers. 

“Louie I would never say that.” Della sounds almost angry.

“It was on your stupid recording from when I was grounded. You said that if i wanted to be a part of this family, I had to stop being me.”

“Oh” That's all she can say? Oh. Louie grinds his teeth together. 

“That’s not what I meant” 

“What else could you have possibly meant?” Huey snaps, his own temper now rearing its head. 

“Just that he needed to be more considerate of the family and stop causing problems?”

“Causing problems”

“Wrong word,” Della starts to stubble over her words.

“Listen boys, I wanted to apologize. I’m still trying to figure out this mom thing and I know I keep messing up, but I really want to try”

“If you really wanted to try, you would have spent time with Louie sooner.” 

“I do-”

“No you don’t,” He rejoins the conversation, pulling the covers off his face just enough to breathe easier, “Every time I tried you always had something else to do or it wasn’t ok for me to do.”

“Louie..”

“Della,” He ignores her sharp intake of breath, “It’s going to take more than an ‘I’m sorry’ to fix this. Guess that’s one thing I learned” Louie is bitter and tired and was really done with this day. He wanted things to go back to normal. 

“Mom, we can talk later, Louie needs some time” Huey placates, his tone gently. As Della is about to leave, Dewey re-enters the room, eyeing her warily. A quick glance at Huey has him holding his tongue and marching past her. 

“Here Lou, this will make you feel better. All three boys relax at the sound of the door closing. Louie sits up, carefully drinking the water and nibbling on the lukewarm pancakes. Dewey had clearly used the microwave to reheat them, but he was hungry and didn’t really care right now. 

Things were far from better, but weren’t terrible anymore. Louie felt relaxed, but the nightmares and fears were still there in the back of his mind. He watched Dewey and Huey talk about unimportant topics, smiling softly at the normalcy of it all, despite the circumstances. He can see himself being ok, believe it even. It was just going to take time. And thankfully, they still had plenty of that left, together.

Summery: Y/N has never had a good life so she is leaving it behind. She is leaving behind the hurt, the pain, and the loss. She has no destination, no plan for the future but will she find someplace to call home.

You hiked you bag up further, didn't dare to look behind you. There was nothing there for you. No point at looking at the house that caused you so much pain. You were done with foster family's and people that used you. While not all of them were bad this last one would give you nightmares for years to come. You felt dirty and used and in all honesty didn't see the point on continueing, but you would. They would not get the better of you, the world would not win. No matter how hard the world beat you down you would keep a stiff upper lip and keep going. You had two months till you turned 18 anyway what was the point in staying another second in that hell hole.

So you made your way down the street and out of town, no destination in mind just away. Away from the pain and heartache and the loss. You let the moon guide you once the lights of the town were behind you. Walking until the first rays of light peaked above the fields. The sun is brighter than your future but at least you were leaving the darkness of your past, or so you hoped.

You knew you didn't matter in the grand scheme of things, the only thing you had from your father was his last name, Winchester. You didn't even know if he knew you were alive and if he did, he deffinently didn't care. Your mother had left you at the church when you were four. It was before Nebraska had changed the law on the age of limitations for safe-haven so she was able to get rid of you, to throw you away like last week's trash. You didn't know what you could have done to elicit such a thing but you must have done something for her to give you up. You bounced around from house to house until now, here you were leaving all the heartache behind and moving forward. You knew your future looked bleak but anything was better than what you were leaving behind.

A Month Later

You shivered on the ground. Sitting in the corner of an abandoned warehouse, trying and failing to get some sleep. It was too cold, the wind howled through the warehouse, tearing through your thin jacket and jeans. You were curled up, your knees drawn up to your chest, your eyes vigilant, searching the dark. You were never safe and even if you were able to sleep you know it wouldn't be deep. You knew you would jolt awake at every little noise or gust of wind. A loud bang to your right startled you. Your eyes searched the darkness trying to pinpoint what made the sound. You had seen a lot of strange unexplainable things in the past month and you didn't want to know what could be lurking in the darkness. What could be waiting in the shadows for the right moment to attack. A scraping along the ground started up, a deep growl emitting from the darkness, growing in volume, getting closer and closer to you.

“Hello! Who's there?” You called out. Hoping it was somehow your imagination.

The growl grew louder and all your instincts urged you to run. So you listened and bolted, a roar erupted from behind you, your own scream echoing in response. Every cell in your body telling you to get away as fast as you could. You crashed out of the warehouse, tears pricking at the corners of your eyes. Your heart pounding in your ears, your feet slapping the pavement. You spared a glance behind you, only to see the thing gaining on you. You saw a corner ahead, hoping to lose the monster by hiding. That there was something on the other side of that corner to duck behind. Pushing yourself a little harder, trying to make it around that corner, hoping to find safety, you ran.

Careening around the corner you slammed into someone, bouncing off of them and falling to the ground. Your head bounced off the pavement and you felt disoriented, the bangs of a gun sounded above you. You flinched at each gun shot, you didn't want to look up and see cops, cops were your worst nightmare. You would rather that monster kill you then go with some cops. Knowing that the cops would throw you back into the system. A guttural cry followed by a thump behind you told you the monster was dead. You stood up, your eyes landing on two men who most definitely weren't cops.

Both tall and imposing, dressed in jeans and flannel. You really wanted to bolt, but you knew if they wanted to catch you they would. They both held pistols in their hands, pointed towards the ground but their finger just a hair's breadth away from the trigger. Blood splattered across the shorter ones face. They stood there like giants ready to strike down anything.

“Are you okay?” The man with the longer hair and bigger build asked. His shoulders relaxing from the tense coil they had been in. He tucked his gun into the waistband of his jeans, his partner(?) doing the same.

You jerkily nodded, your mind moving a mile a minute trying to figure out how to get out of this situation and where you're going to sleep tonight. Maybe you would try under the bridge of the freeway, near the river. Cops rarely patrolled there, you may get a few hours of sleep in.

“Hey kid, what the hell were you doing out here?” The other man asked, accusation clear in his tone.

“It's none of your business,” You shot back, your chin tilted up diffidently. You didn't want them to see the fear that was still gripping your heart on your face.

“Can we at least drive you home?” The taller one offered.

“No thank you” Your head looked behind you, already mapping out the walk to the river, “Thanks for saving my life and all, but I should be going.”

You tried not to tense up as you walked away. You hated turning your back on people but you had to get out of this situation. Before they asked too many questions, before they found out anything about you. People when they found out that you were a 17 year old girl living on the streets, well let's just say they took advantage of the situation. You didn't need to spend any more time alone with two strange men, it didn't matter if they saved your life or not.

You wrapped your arms around yourself as a strong gust of wind blew. You could hear the men behind you, talk and moving about but you out one foot in tint of the other. Taking you further and further away from them. Further away from the monster that had tried to kill you. You looked up at the moon, the only constant in your life now. Wondering where it would take you next.

You walked along the two lane highway in the early light of the rising sun. You hadn't been able to sleep the night before, the lingering fear from the incedent, as you were calling it, kept you awake. So here you were, ready to move on from this town and to the next, dead on your feet just wishing you had the money for breakfast but knowing your pockets were empty. Cars rushed past you periodically, never slowly, not a glance spared your way. It was times like this you wished someone would stop, ask you if you were okay, take you in and be family. But you knew the reality, that if someone did stop it wasn't out of the kindness of their heart but that they wanted something from you.

You didn't trust anyone and rightfully so. No one had ever treated you with kindness. You heard the rumbling of an engine slow down beside you. Your shoulders hunched inward, knowing that if they paid you enough you would do anything. You felt disgusting but the emptiness of your stomach was too prevalent to ignore.

“Hey kid you alright?” A familiar voice shouted.

Your head shot up, eyes wide as you looked upon your saviors from the night before. You shrug your shoulders in response, trying to act nonchalant but the biting cold and the hunger made you look more pathetic than anything.

“I'm Dean this is my brother Sam, we saved ya last night.” Dean said from behind the wheel, “Where's your family kid?”

“Don't got none, not that it's any of your business,” You mumbled a reply.

“Where are you going?” Sam spoke up from beside his brother.

You just shrugged in reply. Both brothers looked at each other and seemed to have a silent conversation. After awkwardly standing outside their car while they communicated they seemed to come to an agreement.

“How about we take you to breakfast kid,” Dean offered.

You shuddered internally, trying not to think of what they would want in return. The growling of your stomach reminding you that you hadn't eaten in days.

“How am I supposed to pay y'all back?” You asked, shoving your hands in your pockets, shifting from foot to foot.

“Kid you don't have to pay us back. You look like your about to keel over any second. You look like you could use some food and we were heading to breakfast anyway.” Dean spoke his eyebrows furrowed together.

“Yeah right, no one does things out of the kindness of their heart,” You bit back.

“Well we are. So if you want breakfast get in.” Dean gruffly apple back.

You reached for the handle, knowing that you would end up regretting the decision. Hunger always did win though.

Sam turned around once you were sitting in the backseat and Dean started driving.

“What's your name?” He asked

“Y/N. Y/N Winchester” You replayed.

The screeching of brakes erupted and you flew forward, slamming into the seat in front of you before colliding into the seat you were sitting out. Dean whipped around his eyes wild.

“Did you say Winchester?”

When you touch your soulmate for the first time, the contact area burns. Not like a fire burn, more like a tingling sunburn. No one knows what caused it, but people definitely noticed when it started happening. An odd story here, and a weird news article there. Eventually it was the norm. When you met a new person, you touched, just to make sure.

At 23, you weren’t sure you’d ever meet the one. Everyone you went to high school with had found their other half. It didn’t bother you much, you knew that when the time came it would happen, so you didn’t go around like some people and touch random strangers hoping to find them.

“Y/N.” Your best friend Julie waved her hand in your face. “Honey bunch are you okay?”

“Hm? Oh, yeah sorry. Distracted is all.” You turned back to the inventory list your boss had you filling out.

“Still wondering when you’ll get your burn?” She had met Mitch, her soulmate, on the first day of ninth grade while passing papers back.

“I mean, yes and no.” You shrugged, checking off a few boxes on the list. “I’m starting to wonder if I’ll ever meet the one. But at the same time I’m kinda content with how life is, and just kinda going with it.”

She rested her hand on your shoulder. “I’m sure you’ll find them. Just gotta have a little hope. But! On a brighter note, convention weekend starts tomorrow and we are for sure going to have a blast.”

“You’re right, I always look forward to convention weekend.” With that thought in your mind you were able to make it the rest of the work day.

The next morning Julie was at your house bright and early and the two of you made your way to the convention center ready to completely geek out. When you got there, the line was long, but moving fast.

“Okay, so what do you want to do first?” Jul asked, bouncing in her toes trying to warm up in the cool air.

“Gotta get in line for Tara Strong obviously, and Doug Jones. Those are the two I for sure want to meet.”

“I think James Marsters and Matthew Lewis are on the top of my list. Oh look, we’re next.”

The two of you made your way into the much warmer food court that doubled as a waiting area before the doors officially open. While waiting, the two of you got a bite to eat and admired the Cosplayers.

“Seriously, I wish I had the talent and time to do what some of these people can do.” She pointed at a group of people who had come as Thor, Loki, and Hela. You pointed out some people who had come as Spiderman, Lego people, and even the astronaut from Doctor Who. By the time the doors opened, the excitement was buzzing through your body. It was always kinda mind blowing just how massive the event is every year. So many vendors, not to mention the ever growing list of celebrity guest.

After meeting the main people you wanted to meet and getting pictures with them, it was time to shop. The amount of amazing things that people made to sell was amazing. The investment of not only money, but time, made each handmade item special. You were trying to decide between two beautiful Harry Potter themed lockets when Jul started patting your arm fast.

“Oh my gosh, Y/N. Look. Looook!” Turning, you immediately saw what, well who, had your friend losing her mind.

“Holy shit. It’s Tom Holland.” Standing just across the walkway was the beautiful, floppy brown haired actor who you had liked since Spiderman. Your affection for him was nothing compared to how much Julie loved him, but you knew he was sweet and really did enjoy him as an actor.

Before you could say anything more, a voice came over the intercom. “Attention guest! We have a special guest joining us today! Tom Holland will be on the floor for pictures and autographs till three. He will also be attending the panel in room 140 at four. Hope to see you all there!”

“Y/N, I have to go see him!” Julie’s light green eyes were huge with the idea of getting to finally meet him.

You smiled. “Well, go quick before the line gets too long. I’ll be right here.”

She kissed your cheek and ran off to the quickly growing line. While she met her crush, you wondered around, buying some stuff for your parents and your brother. It wasn’t long before Julie returned, a smile plastered across her face and a photo clutched to her chest.

“Oh word. He truly is a gift from above. Honestly, if I didn’t know Mitch was my soulmate, I would secretly hope it was Tom. You should have seen him, A little boy was in front of me dressed like Spiderman, and Tom came around and got right at his level to talk to him. Even pretended to get webbed for a photo. It was beautiful. He was beautiful.” She gave a happy sigh and leaned into you.

“Well, we still have his panel at four that could be fun. Let’s go see a few more people. Get a bite to eat and go wait for some decent seats.”

Julie nodded, looping her arm around yours and marching off toward the line for a voice actor from Mitch’s favorite video game.

It was roughly 3:30 when you made it to the room for the panel and it was surprisingly pretty empty so you were able to get good seats. The volume of the room grew as people made their way to seats, but the moment someone stepped on stage it was quiet.

“Hello everyone, I’m Bill! Thank you for coming to this surprise panel, I see we still have some people coming in so I’ll take a moment to let everyone get settled.” A few shuffles of chairs could be heard then all went silent. “Excellent, So today we have Tom Holland joining us, so let give him a round of applause!” The room erupted in claps and shouts as Tom entered the stage, waving at everyone before taking a seat. “Well Tom, how are you?”

“I’m doing absolutely amazing. I had a wonderful time greeting fans and am so lucky to be here.”

“We are happy you could join us. You’re a busy man so let’s get right to it shall we? Spider-Man Two. What can you tell us?”

Tom made a cute scrunched face. “Honestly, not much. I know I’m in it, and Robert is in it, and Jacob and Zendaya. But truly that’s all I’ve been allowed to say. They are trying very hard to keep me mum about it.” The audience laughed.

“Well, I tried.” Bill stuck his hands up in defeat. “Any word on how Avengers Four is coming along?”

Tom gave a tight lipped nod. “Again, not much I can say on that either Bill. When I asked the Russo brothers they told me to just say “itsa coming” and nothing else.” He made a zip and lock motion across his lips. “But, I will say it’ll be epic and hopefully make up for the last movie.”

Bill and Tom went back and forth for a while, joking and laughing and eventually they opened the floor for questions. People asked all kinds of stuff, like what was it like getting to work with all these stars, and how does he take is tea. The interactions between him and everyone really opened your eyes to just how genuine of a guy is was.

After almost an hour, Bill announced that sadly it was time for Tom to go. He agreed to take a picture standing in front of everyone, so we all gathered close while Tom stood at the front doing the Spider-Man pose.

First, there was a scream, then some pushing. Everyone wanted to get closer. Somehow you and Julie got separated as you were pushed closer to the front. Suddenly your chest was getting tight, there were bodies everywhere and loud voices. Then, you were in the floor, more screaming, two sets of hands were on either arm pulling you up and out of the crowd. You were sat in a chair, one pair of arms let go, the others stayed.

“Are you okay?” Your eyes were closed and the voice was muffled by the ringing in your ears. You reached out and touched their arm, nodding your head and steadying your breath. “Okay, you stay here I’ll send someone over to help you.” You nodded again.

It started when the person let go. That feeling of a sunburn on your wrist, the burn. Your eyes shot open, scanning the swarm of bodies for the person who had touched you. It was no use though, with everyone running around it was a madhouse.

“Oh my gosh, Y/N are you okay!?” You looked up to meet the familiar green eyes of Julie.

You ghosted your fingers over your burning skin. “It happened. The. It. Julie, it happened.”

“Really?” She practically squealed. “Who was it!”

You locked eyes with her, watching her face fall at your reaction. “I don’t know.”
