The thing about Ezekiel Jones is that there a couple obvious directions you can go with the cynical, vocally-selfish-yet-charming rogue of the party.
You can make his detachment and cynicism purely the product of circumstances and reveal there’s a deathlessly loyal romantic very slightly under the surface, even if he didn’t believe it himself. This is the Han Solo and Eugene Fitzherbert route.
You can also have him actively yearning for love/connection/trust/worth, but perpetually doomed by his Criminal Inclinations to break every chance he’s given and/or be forever distrusted by the people he’s attached himself to. This is the angstier if more self-aware route, popular with Neal Caffrey and probably others I’m forgetting.
...But Ezekiel took all of that “cocky self-seeking thief who sticks around anyway” setup and somehow effortlessly dodged both these routes, because I guess he’s too awesome for angst or something. Because Ezekiel’s code is, apparently, “do what makes me happy,” like many rogues... but he’s willing to actually see what makes him happy, so it mostly works. Doing good things makes him happy! Being the hero makes him happy! Being around his friends makes him happy! So he’ll do that!
Now, the thing most rogues do see is that all of these sources of happiness will involve suffering at some point, so Type 1 has to be convinced that it’s worth it and Type 2 often fails to hold on to said happiness because they can’t face the downsides. Ezekiel... I think honestly believes that he can dodge any negative consequences, if he really wants to. Which means he doesn’t usually try to hold himself apart from the group or their causes—he doesn’t keep one foot out the door, because he assumes if he wants to make a break for it, it won’t matter how deep in he is.
He’s an honest rogue, and usually that doesn’t work—or it only works because they’re very deluded about their own attachments. But Ezekiel is only deluded (if it even counts as a delusion, considering his archetype powers) about his own ability to avoid negative consequences for his decisions. He’s remarkably clear-eyed about the decisions themselves!
But ALSO this means he’s sincere when he says he’s flat-out unwilling to do anything that's Not Fun. Usually when rogues say that it’s at least a little bit of a pose, but Ezekiel is just being up-front about it. Again, he will do things he doesn’t feel like doing if he’s pushed hard enough, but outside of “actively being forced” he usually feels no obligation to do anything he doesn’t feel like doing. This is why he avoids responsibilities and obligations—they are often Not Fun in themselves, but they also sign you for more not-fun things down the road! Ezekiel wants perpetual opt-out power in everything, even if he doesn’t often use it (because usually there is an immediately obvious purpose to whatever he’s being asked to do).
He wants to be a hero, because who wouldn’t, but he specifically wants to be the Rule-Breaking Maverick who can do whatever he wants because there’s an Actual Authority Figure behind a desk somewhere who will deal with everything else.
...All of which is why “And the Point of Salvation” was such a good device for breaking him. Because he COULD NOT GET OUT. And he couldn’t hand off the responsibility for the team AT ALL.

just started reading your fic and gotta say I love your Marika. I'm always a sucker for Marika redemption (usually by being dragged through the mud until she becomes a somewhat better reason) but it's equally delightful when she is truly awful, just the fucking worst. Horrible women my beloved
Thank you! I'm glad you're enjoying the fic! I'd like to write something with a more sympathetic (or at least redemptive) take on Marika at some point, but the whole premise of Prince of Death kind of requires Marika as the manipulator at the center of a massive web of family trauma. I started writing PoD an entire year ago, and my headcanons on Marika have shifted significantly since then (thanks mostly to @maranull). Even within the confines of PoD, I think the new perspective has helped me give Marika more depth, especially in the flashbacks.
It's an interesting contrast, I think, having a ruthless but partially sympathetic Marika in the flashbacks, and a Marika who has spent centuries slowly smothering her conscience and stewing in paranoia in the present day.
Random thought, but for some reason whenever I think of a redemption fic for Marika, I always think of a Groundhog Day plot lol.

day 5: full au
this is the day i’ve been looking forward to most for this event!! i’m so excited to share a few au recs :D
first of all: Tip-toeing on Lily-pads by my beloved @cherryisgone!! it’s a lovely little fantasy au where Will’s a prince, Mike’s a knight, and El likes to curse Mike by turning him into a frog. i bet you can guess the only way the curse can be broken, right? >:) anyway, this is so well-written, it’s 7k words of Will pining, and it’s got all the things i could ever hope for out of a fantasy au: two people being held back from each other because of politics and duties to one’s nation :’D i mean, yes, it was a birthday gift to me, so in a lot of ways, it was tailored to my tastes, but it’s got such a fun vibe and beautiful descriptions that i think it can be (and should be) enjoyed by all. so, yeah, take some time to spend with a princess and the frog-esque au written by one of my dear friends 💜🐸
then: A New Fight by @tea-for-one-please! i was out of town all last week, and even though i brought a couple of books with me to read, i spent all of my free reading time with this lovely trilogy. it’s a fantastically imagined star wars au, and while byler is a big focus of it, i truly enjoyed how the author integrated all of the party members into the story in such a natural way. i wouldn’t say i’m the most die-hard star wars fan - in fact, i probably could only barely describe the plot of any of the movies - but the franchise does hold a special place in my heart for personal reasons, so it was so enjoyable getting to read about some of my favorite characters from st being thrown into the rebellion!! seriously, if you have some time, definitely spend it with this series
Warm by @notebooknonbinary! this is just a quick little d&d au that’s so cute and sweet. as my beloved Vee says in the description, it’s nice to see that Mike has the self-preservation skills of a lemming in any universe lol. of course he put himself in harm’s way to save Will!! and now we get to see the aftermath of it with Vee’s lovely writing :]
Daydream by disaster_energy! another d&d au, but this time, Will gets chosen by the moon goddess, and Mike decides to pledge his allegiance to that paladin order. it’s really sweet, and the universe the author built was also super fun to see!! it kind of reminded me of the world-building in percy jackson, so if you liked those books, definitely check this one out!!
The Trees Are Growing Restless by @light-lanterne!! this is a super interesting groundhog day au with a specific focus on Mike’s unresolved trauma. i still need to read the latest chapter because i am nothing if not behind on reading, but i’ve been so excited for this one and can’t wait to see where it goes. Angel’s writing is amazing, and he’s got Mike’s character down so well :]

Favorite time of year: every single day that i grace this beautiful planet ∠( ᐛ 」∠)＿ I unironically love Christmas so much. I love the cold and I love the fact that we can slack for a little bit and I love having an excuse and indulge myself by seeing and meeting with my loved ones. I also love spring! (<- spoken with the privilege of someone who only has mild allergies) And summer when it isn't boiling outside!
Favorite drinks: boba, COFFEE, ginger ale, wine (the semisweet ones and especially semisweet red wine ❤), fresh squeezed orange juice, HOT MILK WITH HONEY and generally whatever has sugar in it
Collect anything?: Littlest Pet Shop!!! When i was in kindergarden there was that one kid that had SACKS of lps and from then on i decided that it was my fate to defeat them... (i just said to my mum to buy me lps whenever she could and i also asked her every christmas to tell santa claus i needed the big packs with them) I also have collections of rocks and shells from different beaches that i went to! Lately i try to collect stickers from cons and such (<-literally has went to one (1) con so far) and chupa-chups cans bc they look pretty 👉👈 (not sponsored)

1) it's not living (if it's not with you) by brella (hq!!) TOP 1!!! IT DOESN'T GET BETTER THAN THIS FELLAS! Legit, tsukkiyama isnt even my thing but this one ticks all my boxes: desperate lead? check. the grumpy one mellows out for the sunshine one? check. the inherent value of change and becoming better by loving and wanting to express it properly and by that becoming a better person? check. GROUNDHOG DAY AU?? YES PLEASE! It's.. It's very good. Please give it a read if you want. (brella has written many good hq fics btw please check them out!)
2) Work-Related Risk Factors by parkernoir (mp100) Case fic, angsty and probably my favourite mp100 ever! It has Serizawa! It has Tome! It has Reigen trauma! It made me cry my eyes out in agony! I have a very soft spot for this. It has serirei in it but mostly it's gen if i remember correctly? yeah
3) beginners by silvercistern (mp100) fair warning it's about sex and it doesn't have just steamy scenes, it discusses generally sex and stuff. That being said it has ace Reigen in it and it made me cry 👍
4) The Negligible Self by ch_am (mp100) anything and everything by camp is a gift honestly. Angsty generally, full of whump specifically, it makes the soft, tender moments hit better and it's still in progress! Join the fun as i lose my mind with every single update! Yay! (people in the comments in ao3 are also trying to find out what is going on and it's fun) (it has a prequel too which is really good and canon-adjacent)
5) Kintsugi by SpicyChibi (mp100) it took me a week to recover from reading this. mp100 fanwriters have a way of capturing the vulnerability of serirei in a way that physically hurts me. Tender, good, I love them, I love them, I love them. Ongoing and 90,000 words so far.
6) Like A Cheap Suit, You Can Wear Me Out by Vulcanodon (mp100) written like a romantic comedy and made me laugh at every twist and turn of the plot. The last scene is forever ingrained in me and it actually makes me emotional. Case fic again and a very fun one
7) Heart Rate Rapid by Justkeeptrekkin (mp100) teacher au, all the children in one class, ongoing, literally finshed it yesterday, ACE REIGEN BELOVED. (so far no explicit content so don't pay too much mind to the rating, there are discussions of sex but only briefly and on a surface level) I love their banter and the transition from friendship to something more... sigh
8) where the night goes by bigspoonnoya (hq!!) 'the sad gay with the happy ending' tag got to me. I love bittersweet stories with happy endings (can you tell) and this one has kagehina in it.... utterly head over heels for stories where they meet many years later.
9) fake it, make it by zadderlee (hq!!) FAVOURITE KAGEHINA FIC RIGHT THERE! ongoing since good old 2019 but the author has said they are going to continue it at some point! good characterisation, i had forgotten how good it is but i keep getting back to this.
10) That Baby Does Not Belong to You (But It Could) by multifascinate (talkativelock) (hq!!) bokuaka with baby hinata. need i say more. oh, yeah and they are 20-somethings. And in college. the romance aspect is there but it mostly focuses on other things. And i love it.

of all the movies i believed might warrant a moviegroovies revival, i think i speak for all of us when i say that this one was... not at the top of the list. nevertheless: unexpected, unwanted, and unsung: dream a little dream (1989).
mmmmm... i liked it. more than i expected to, anyway. to be honest, this was one i probably wouldn’t have picked up on my own, even for the “two coreys” phenomenon and its tangential connection back to the lost boys (my beloved)--as i’ve indicated before, while i’ll do anything for love (of the lost boys), i won’t do that (watch corey feldman movies)--but my dad got some kind of meredith salenger itch this week, and this was the result. all in all, it was pretty solid? kind of dragged for me, but there were no scenes i’d point to in particular and say “cut this.” plus, they did some interesting things with the bodyswap concept... and, if we’re being honest, i found myself pretty impressed by feldman’s performance.
(said nobody ever. i know, i know.)
what i liked: the body swap is a fairly standard stock plot (although, as i type this, i can’t call to mind NEARLY as many examples as i thought i could. i’ve extolled the virtues of vince vaugn in freaky on this blog before, haven’t i?), but dream a little dream had a fairly unique take on it; most of the movie is corey feldman acting as jason robbards’ character coleman, but we never see robbards as bobby. the justification for the plot is given a lot more screentime than the handwavey explanation which typically accompanies such a story (although i’m not necessarily sure that this is a good thing--sometimes the plot does NOT demand explanation; groundhog day & etc.), too--we devote a substantial amount of the exposition to coleman’s obsession with dreams and the idea that, as we don’t really know what dreams “are,” therein lies the path to eternal life, eternal youth...
sometimes it really is better just to say a wizard did it and have done, i think.
what really stood out to me, though, was whose movie it really was. don’t let the smokescreen of the two coreys fool you--dream a little dream is coleman’s movie, through and through. coleman, not the delinquent teenagers, is the one with a problem to be solved. it’s coleman, and apparently coleman alone, who has to learn a lesson, and while “this was what being young was like--and it wasn’t easy” is a pretty standard one for this genre, it feels... different, as presented. i searched a while for the big why, until it hit me: dream a little dream is a teen comedy about an old man.
bobby, on his own, has plenty of problems, and the introduction, cutting between title cards and a seinfeldian conversation between coreys feldman and haim, serves as something of a red herring in that respect. we gear up for a movie about teenage ne’er-do-wells coming of age, finding themselves, and presumably getting the girl. the thing is, though--that’s not the movie we get. quickly after we’re presented with our presumed protagonists, we’re introduced to another figure: a grumpy old man searching, to the detriment of his relationship with his friends and wife, even, for more. he has a good life, and he’s still deeply in love with gena, but he’s restless and ill-content. it’s already a departure from the role of older figures in such movies (because if our teenage protagonists represent youth and chaos, then older characters, especially much older characters like coleman and gena, are stability, stagnation--they’ve already figured it all out, and are liable to be trapped in their ways)... and then his obsession pays off, with a little help from fate, and he ends up occupying the body of bobby keller, with gena taking up a more backseat role possessing his female counterpart, lainie diamond.
like i said, the reverse is never true. bobby still exists in a spiritual form during coleman’s escapade, making the occasional cameo in coleman’s dreams (and one has to wonder about the influence of a nightmare on elm street on this movie’s final form; at one point, bobby even quips “you were expecting, maybe... freddy krueger?”, the dreams are shot in a similar, fuzzy way to nancy’s, and in the last act not falling asleep becomes an apparently life-or-death matter for gena), but he’s not walking around in coleman’s body, which i do believe the movie is stronger for. bobby might have a takeaway lesson from all of this, but it’s coleman we follow, navigating his way through high school and first love and the mortifying ordeal of trying to pull his wife’s consciousness up through a teenage girl’s mind. and i like that the delineation between lainie and gena and even bobby and coleman isn’t always clear; they’re sharing the bodies. as coleman points out at one point, “we’re them.” there isn’t quite a point where one stops and the other starts--coleman takes on more of bobby’s mannerisms and speech patterns the longer he plays his part, and lainie, when she’s around coleman, acts more and more in accordance to gena’s personal quirks. it’s surprisingly heartfelt, in a way. the end product is sometimes messy, because it’s juggling the body-swapping a-plot with a romantic triangle subplot involving an angry boy with a gun and a minor gang war between rival delinquent groups at the school (although, i will say that the culmination of THAT, the confrontation where coleman urges joel to shoot HIM, was pretty satisfying), but it’s mature in a way you don’t see in a lot of its contemporaries. ultimately, we’re watching an old man face the consequences of his monomania and realize what really matters to him is love. the rest is set dressing.
and as for the rest, hm. corey haim’s role didn’t pan out nearly as much as i expected it to. he sticks around for most of the movie to make faces at coleman when he does out of character shit in bobby’s body, but doesn’t even make it into the final scene when coleman and bobby (in their respective bodies again) come to a final understanding. it was already a pretty long movie, but i can’t help feeling like more could have been done with their friendship, especially with dinger making it onto the cover of the movie (unlike robbards) and into all of the promotional material. toward the end, coleman-as-bobby genuinely thanks dinger for looking out for him during the ordeal, only for dinger to ask if he’s “going fag” for his trouble. (as an aside: was this a thing people said? i’d never really heard it before i watched the warriors last week, but here it popped up again. whatever.) dinger’s character also continuously brought weird, sexualized racial comments to the table (first referring to apache women, then hawai’ian), which served no purpose but white supremacy’s. this, along with the ease with which lainie’s mother makes the decision to have her second husband drug her teenage daughter with a sleeping pill mixed into a glass of wine, can be explained (but not excused) as products of their time, but, y’know, come on. even in 1989, these scenes were written, greenlit, and parroted by people who should have known better.
hey, killer soundtrack, though. all in all, i could watch it again.

hey, it’s the kitty anon from last night, just replying to ur post because ur brain is HUGE and im so pumped to talk to somebody about this and we are literally engaged now
“Quinn indulges in the illusion and Santana’s appalled by the reality.” YES!!!!! you found the words!!!!! this isnt just a summary of their reaction to kitty either, like, this sentence gets at the root of their conflicts as characters in such a succinct way. santana’s arc is about her confronting a reality that she can’t stand to face, quinn’s arc is about her desperately clinging to the facade of the “perfect, all-american golden girl” for as long as she can (and it failing time and time again) and just!!!! ugh that was such a great way to describe it.
the thing that bugs me is that we get a lot of conflict in quinn’s arc (which can be great, don’t get me wrong), but we never really see any resolution imo, or at least not any that’s well-written. if we had gotten to see more of quinn mentoring kitty we might have actually gotten to see quinn arc reach a proper conclusion. maybe mentoring somebody and being a guide for a “younger her” would have helped her see that she was still worthy of love and care and patience even though she wasn’t a perfect person (and it could have been a breaking-the-cycle sort of thing, because she desperately needed somebody to help guide her in high school and never got it). there’s also just something very sweet to me about quinn, who literally went crazy about not getting to have beth in her life, fulfill that maternal role in a way (finally, some found fuckin family 😩👌). plus like, watching them go from a mini-me and a kid in denial to two people who accept one another (and themselves!!!) in all of their flaws would have been thematically perfect for what glee wanted to be. her relationship with kitty could have become something so meaningful but they just dropped the ball and it genuinely frustrates me so bad 😭 #justiceforquinnscharacterarc

Kitty anon, my beloved! I’m always down to talk more about any of my bitchy cheerleaders and your brain is huge so please continue sharing your thoughts. I’m not gonna talk about Santana much here but that’s only because I’m looking forward to your thoughts on her and Kitty’s relationship! So if you feel like it please do share. I also have kinda separate thoughts on Quinntana contrasts/similarities and further thoughts on how Kitty mirrors both of them (the topic that started this!) but I’ll do those in another post. Feel free to reflect on that when it happens!
I completely agree, Quinn has all these huge story beats and really high stakes plots and then... nothing. I think I’m more critical of even the season 1 pregnancy storyline than most because I hate how much it focuses on Finn and even Will and Puck instead of her. Like, so much happens to this girl within such a short time and it’s like the writers just play groundhog day with her, resetting the status quo each time and giving her a different route to realize what she really wants.
I’m loving your ideas on her mentoring Kitty, it’s a shame Quinn was reduced to a guest star in later seasons otherwise this could have worked so well. (On the other hand good for Dianna for getting out.) At the very least I think we really needed a scene where Quinn realizes that Santana was right and Kitty really was up to no good, you know just to have that “oh shit” moment. Especially because I really do believe, as malicious as she was, Kitty didn’t fully realize how messed up everything she doing was. You can see it on her when Santana calls her out after Marley faints and then in deleted Swan Song scene she even tells Marley “you weren’t supposed to get hurt”. Not that that negates what she’s done but so many see her as this purely evil character instead of the ignorant kid she was.
And I think Quinn would be a great person to extend some understanding, like you say. And Anon, that “she was still worthy of love and care and patience even though she wasn’t a perfect person” bit? Omg you read my mind. I’d love that for their dynamic because, again in the deleted scene, when Marley shows Kitty understanding instead of contempt she’s so confused. And in Previously Unaired Christmas as well, Kitty shows she’s aware that she’s messed up and doesn’t view herself as worthy. So for Quinn, a person who’s made mistakes and hated herself for it and who didn’t often get help and compassion when she would have needed it the most, to be able provide that for Kitty would be *chef’s kiss*.

I would have never thought of that but it is such an incredible thought. Yes. Yes! Quinn getting to guide this messy kid who’s so much like her in many ways? alright boys this is where i have to come clean and admit to having basically not watched any of the classic time loop movies, not even groundhog day. i have migraine madness and think films are too long disease and i will NOT apologize! also i didn't really even like time loop as a trope until very recently? i think it's very rarely done well because it's either like. presented as a comedy even though the very idea is horrifying, or it leans SUPER far into the horror in a way that is simply not enjoyable to engage with. however, i am now a time loop TRUTHER and am very interested in time loop as product of trauma / source of trauma / method of healing from trauma. so while this is not by any means a definitive or comprehensive list, here r some of my time loop media faves:
russian doll: a MUST WATCH ! a video game developer is trapped in a glitch with someone she's never met. why have they been thrown together? how can they escape the day they're stuck in? the answer WILL make you weep!
honorable mention pynch russian doll au fic my beloved which honestly is where my time loop interest began <3
the raven cycle: two characters are trapped in the very moment of their death, though they show it differently. people who die wake up again after hundreds of years; excavations reveal remains too recently manufactured to have been buried for so long; when something is going wrong, the clock always reads 6:21.

how did you get into rotbtd? saw some fanart on google images while i was perusing through the httyd fanart as a ten year old and never looked back. deviant art and youtue amvs became my vices after that.
what made you stay/come back? httyd 3 actually! even though it's my least favourite of the trilogy, it made me so nostalgic for rotbtd. also the content now is so much better than it used to be imo.
out of the four movies, which one is your favourite? httyd1 definitely. i think its the most well written and constructed (tangled is a close second) and the soundtrack is amazing. while i think brave and rotg aren't as narratively strong, they have the same heart and loveable characters as the other two. tbh, i thoroughly enjoy watching all of them
dreamworks dragons or rapunzel’s tangled adventure? i ADORED rob and dob and i used to watch it episode by episode on abc3, but i haven't gotten around to watching all of rtte yet. tbh...i don't like the characterisation in rtte very much, something just feels off about it. character and plot wise, i don't have anything against rapunzel's tangled adventure, but some of it gets boring and repetitive after a while. this is a long winded way of saying i prefer dreamwork's dragons, but just rob and dob ig.
which one do you prefer to be made a sequel of, brave or rise of the guardians? like @hobie-brown said, disney should not be trusted with merida or any of her family. that being said! a rotg sequel would be a dream come true!! there's so much lore and world building that needs to be explored!! i have so many questions. how did the other guardians die? they mentioned the groundhog, are there other spirits?? are there different ones from other cultures?? and obviously there's will joyce's series to take inspiration from as well. imo, a series would work better to explore everything. (also give me a pitch black redemption arc. i LIVE for the villain-turned-awkward-relative trope)
otp/brotp(s)? my otp is hiccstrid and i think eugene and rapunzel is one of disney's most solid romances so there's that. jarida!! my beloved!! tbh, i was indifferent to jarida until like three months ago but now i cannot stop thinking abt them. in terms of brotps? all of them. literally any. the best thing abt the rotbtd revival is the lack of ship wars and the realisation that all of them have wonderful and distinct chemistry between any other member of the group.
favourite characters? httyd and brave were my gateways into this fandom, so i guess hiccup and merida?? but i actively kin rapunzel and jack has so many unexplored character traits beyond Ice Themed Bad Boy That Pulls Pranks. idk man, don't make me pick.

C: What member do you identify with most?
I write from Alex’s POV the most because he has a logical and tightly wound sense of voice with me. However, personally I identify very strongly with Isobel. We have similar mothers, I think. I also am very conscious of my clothing and jewelry matching, if I can build a facade of style and polish no one will think to look under the surface to see what a needy and insecure person I really am. @myrmidryad wrote a story about Isobel needing to learn how to be friends with women, and I was rocked by it, because I too try and be of service with gifts to keep people around. When you’re raised hyper aware of appearances, you think of relationships as transactional. Isobel is my twin.
H: How would you describe your style?
Hmm… I would say I’m a tight point of view writer from one perspective. Everything in my current WIP is only from what Alex knows (which differs from what we as an audience saw), and he’s sometimes an unreliable narrator. I don’t make assumptions that the characters around him see his intentions in the way he means them. A lot of times this means I get into these emotional porn dialog scenes as a way of the characters relating to each other.
O: How do you begin a story–with the plot, or the characters?
So far since it’s fanfic I’m rolling around in unsupervised, it’s the plot. I watch a ton of true crime shows, so “Last Year’s Wishes” started with hearing that true crime voice over like Dateline. “When prominent local attorney Noah Bracken goes missing, the town of Roswell was shocked at the revelations under his seemingly perfect life. Who was at the cause of it- was it at the hand of his event planner and local socialite wife, Isobel? Was there something indecent going on between the couple and local town bad boy Michael Guerin-- Just when you think you know the story, one of the town’s most beloved deputies also goes missing. His brother in law.”
I’m not good at short, tight scenes. It’s always a sweeping plot that hits first. Sometimes I question if I took on too much or if I have the skills to carry it off. Like I want to write a groundhog day / time loop story, where Alex relives Caulfield in 5 or 6 ways, and the final version, the canon one, was the least heartbreaking of them all. I’m still working on the vehicle for that plot.

OOC • This is just a quick reminder to say that this blog is running on a queue until at least the first week of June! I’ve had it posting four times daily up until now, and that should be continuing for the next few days, but from today (Sunday 26th May) until Wednesday 5th June I’ll be in London! The first few days’ll be spent with my mother, then once she goes home I’ll be staying with my fiancée and we’ll be seeing an awful lot of our beloved @rainbowsongs!

Episode Review: "Is this going to be on the test?" [S03E14]
This episode was slightly unusual. For a whole week, everyone involved in the show hyped it up as the episode that will go down as the greatest Blindspot episode that has ever aired. There is probably a clause in their contract that requires them to say this about every episode, so maybe taking their word for it isn’t always advised. But while it may not go down as the best Blindspot episode ever, it will certainly go down as the most memorable, and years down the road, it will likely be celebrated as a cult favorite. It will also go down as the strangest, most WTF Blindspot episode ever. So to honor this legacy, we give you this slightly different review of the episode.
Y: If I may, I’d like to start by saying,
I’ve come to learn to expect many things from Blindspot but I never expected this. I was prepared to go through all the feels having to watch Patterson get blown up and almost die, but I did not expect those feels. I laughed and I cried and I scratched my head in confusion and then I laughed again. A lot.
L: Same. I’m not used to laughing while one of our beloved characters flirts up close and personal with death! So there were moments when I gasped and held my breath. And moments when I laughed so hard, I almost fell off my sofa.
This episode was fun and creative, and even though I understand why people complained that it didn’t move the season plot along, I still loved it. I especially adored all the 80′s references, although I do have to wonder how funny some of the gags were to people too young to have seen Groundhog Day or The Breakfast Club.
Y: I don’t care how old these references made me feel because they were so totally worth it. It’s a reassuring thought when you realize that the writers room of your favorite show is filled with nerds who love the same things that you do and have the same sense of nerdy humor that you do.
Okay, so what actually happened in this episode?
Y: I have no idea.
Okay, no I think I kind of do now, after watching a few dozen times. An explosion in the lab put Patterson in a coma, and then the dead came back to life, her brain got stuck in a loop and for some reason, in Patterson’s brain, David is still more useful in solving tattoos than the rest of the FBI team who have been doing it for years.
At some point it got hard keeping track of what information we’d gotten was from the real version of events and what happened in her head. With Patterson stuck in this loop trying to solve the case, the world around her kept getting weirder and weirder. And no, the rising dead lending a helping hand in solving the case was not the weird part.
L: I mean, things started off straightforwardly enough. Patterson wakes up, heads into the NYO, and Afreen tells her she’s solved a tattoo that leads them to some suspicious military autopsy reports. They requisition the cremains and begin tests to see if they contain toxins that might explain how the Marines died. And then the lab explodes, along with any hope that this might be one of our normal, logical investigations. When we next see Patterson... her day starts over again.
Each iteration gets weirder and weirder but also gets Patterson closer to solving the case, as well as sorting out the other things that are apparently cluttering up her subconscious mind. (And I have to say, I’m a bit jealous here. When I dream up solutions to problems while I am sleeping, they never actually make sense in real life.)
After working through the case multiple times, Patterson finally figures out that the lab exploded because someone tampered with the experiment to cover up the fact that all the Marines died of heavy metal poisoning. They all died of the same cause after exposure to the same chemical weapon when they were sent on an unsanctioned, covert operation to China, and the General who sent them there then had all three coroners who signed off on the autopsies killed to cover up the whole thing.
But solving the case isn’t enough. Besides the case, what else was cluttering up Patterson’s brain?
Y: First, we had Reade and Tasha. From Reade telling Patterson and Tasha the news about his engagement and asking Tasha to be his best man-- which is how things went in the real world-- in Patterson’s head, it eventually turned into Tasha and Reade being the new happily engaged couple.
Yeah, I’m sorry. I still cannot get on board with this because, one, I love Meg and two, and most importantly, these two have the most amazing friendship I have ever seen and I need them to remain BFF’s forever!
L: Right there with you.
I know we’re supposed to feel very sad for Pining!Tasha. But the thing is, there is no way out of this (despite the “solution” that Patterson comes to, that Tasha should just tell Reade how she feels) that doesn’t make everyone involved a total jerk. (Not you, Meg, you’re a dear, even if you are going to be deported any second now.) If Tasha says something to Reade, she messes up a really good friendship and also possibly an otherwise happy relationship, which seems like a terrible thing to do to someone she claims to love. If not, she’s just sad and pining forever which still seems like a grave disservice to the strong, take-charge character we’ve grown so attached to over the past three and a half seasons. Similarly, Reade’s character is screwed either way. He either dumps Meg (which makes him a faithless jerk) or else he breaks his best friend’s heart. There are no endings to this that are anything but tragic, and I really just want it all to go away.
Y: And then there were Jane and Kurt. Their adventures in the world of the Patterson’s comatose brain may have been brief, but seeing Kurt covered in Jane’s tattoos and talking with outpouring empathy and Jane in her husband’s favorite denim shirt, a frown on her face and channeling his inner grumpchkin deserves all the awards.
L: As does Sully, because as I am sure Jaimie warned him, shaving off all of your body hair and standing around naked for hours while people glue tattoos on you isn’t as much fun as you might think. Then again, according to the rest of the cast, Sully apparently likes to take his clothes off, so maybe it was a fun change of pace for him?
But seriously, yes, the Jane and Kurt scenes, while short and sweet, were good. Though I must admit to being just a little bit torn: On the one hand, I am relieved that they decide to tell Avery the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help her dad. But on the other hand, I am kind of annoyed that they couldn’t figure out that was the correct course of action without Patterson telling them so. I mean, have they learned absolutely nothing from the past two and a half seasons?!
Y: And then there was a naked Roman in the elevator. A part of me believes this deserves its own review. Maybe we need to have an entire six-part feature just to celebrate this? For science of course.
L: Science is very, very good to us.
Honestly, though, this scene was gold for quite a few reasons beyond just naked!Roman. For one thing, like the cute scene in the hospital with Tasha and Patterson, it was a tiny nod by the writers to some of the alternative ships in this fandom. Thanks, guys!!
Y: Another thing I loved about this scene, besides the obscure ship nod from the writers, is the actual significance of Roman and Patterson’s relationship this season. Roman’s hasn’t interacted much with anyone from the team this year. He’s had a few phone calls with his sister, and a few with his brother-in-law, as well as the three brief encounters in Venice, Berlin and NYC. And there was that cat video he emailed Patterson. Wait, that wasn’t a cat video, it was him helping her solve a time-sensitive tattoo.
But here’s the thing, in a weird twisted way, Patterson and Roman have been interacting all season. Roman knows that Patterson is the brains behind the tattoo cracking and so in his design of them, he must have had her in mind. He designed these specifically for her. So in that way, these two have been in a constant conversation from the minute Patterson rejoined the team and started cracking these tattoos.
I love this little detail. Roman’s been “talking” to Patterson through the tattoos all season, and that elevator scene makes a lot more sense in that perspective. Also his being naked also makes sense. I mean, not that I’m trying to find a rational reason to have him naked, but if I must infuse an intellectual analysis to this... nah. I love my shallow brain view of things.
And then there were the people who showed up in Patterson’s subconscious uninvited. Or at least not consciously invited to her subconscious. While she was unconscious. You know what? Let’s just go with it like Patterson did...
Y: If you’ve ever thought bumping into an ex while with your current boyfriend is awkward, imagine having the ex who died and the ex who used you and manipulated you for a terrorist organization and the guy you’ve been flirting with all gathered together in one place-- and having a group therapy session all together. And not to mention the naked terrorist you apparently have a crush on in the elevator. Those are some serious drugs right there.
L: But at least it’s cathartic for her, right?
We’ve seen how Patterson throws herself into her work to avoid dealing with her problems, and even her sessions with Dr. Sun last season don’t seem to have helped her really sift through the wreckage of her romantic life. David really was perfect for her, but she pushed him away and blamed herself for his death. Borden was the exact opposite of David. He probably wouldn’t have touched all the corners of her nerdy little heart, but he was at least part of her world, so he seemed safe, at least right up until she found out he wasn’t. I would argue that having a crush on Roman probably seems subconsciously safe, too-- he looks good naked and he’s smart enough to design the puzzles she loves, but he’s keeping the FBI at such a distance there’s little risk of anything actually happening for real. Plus, she already knows she can’t trust him. See? Total fantasy, so totally safe.
Enter Jack, who is:
Just as nerdy as she is (I can’t tell you how much I loved that he is the only person who actually reads and appreciates her internal memos);
Not dead (Sorry, David);
Part of her world at the FBI, so he understands the demands and risks that her job entails;
Almost every bit as socially awkward as she is; and
In summary, basically perfect for her.
But she can’t move on, can’t even take him up on his invitation to come to his talk or get a cup of coffee, because she’s still stuck in the loop where she expects that everything will turn out badly no matter what she does. As she tells Borden, “I don't think I can ever be in another relationship again.”
But by the end of the longest day ever, she breaks that loop too and tells Tasha that she’s going to call him. And I really hope we haven’t seen the last of Jack Izenberg. You can do this, Patterson! You deserve to be happy!
Y: To be honest, I think David returning may just be my favorite thing because he is the most precious and I love him so much and I wish he didn’t die. And Borden... well it’s Borden and we all have unfinished business with him. And while Patterson and Roman in the elevator was the scene that will go down in infamy, I actually adored her interaction with Jack. The awkward nerdy failed attempt at flirting gave me life and I kind of want him to stick around and for him and our Patty to become an adorable science!couple. is that too much to ask for Patterson to have?
L: There’s a second point here. Of all the characters on this show, Patterson is the one who has suffered the most. She lost her first love, and was horrifically betrayed by her second. She’s felt directly responsible for more than one co-worker being brutally murdered. It’s not just that she deserves romantic happiness, it’s that she deserves happiness in general.
I keep going back to how broken she was at the end of the last season. “I'm just so tired... I used to love everything about this job.” So she ran away to Silicon Valley, where she discovered that it was safer but not fulfilling in the way that catching the bad guys is. So she packed up all of that baggage and brought it back with her, where things promptly got worse.
So it’s not just that she had to move on to open herself up to romance. She had to forgive herself for David and Pellington and Stuart, and let go of her guilt so she can move on with her whole life, to be happy with who and what and where she is again. As Borden says, “You'll never have a future until you can make peace with your past.”
Y: But before she can do that there’s one more massive bomb she’s going to have to address. While the episode allowed Patterson to finally let David go, in one of the most beautiful sequence of scenes that were equally heartwarming and heartbreaking, there is someone else who didn’t ride the SIOC elevator up to heaven with the rest of Patterson’s dead dream dudes.
Ever the scientist, Patterson noticed that Borden in her dream did not fit into the parameters like he should have. All the dead exited their visit through the elevator, and if Borden were dead, he should have been with them.
Isn’t that right, Natasha?
Have these kids learned nothing?
