Summary: Y/n is trying to figure her life out but is going to be hard since her brother is the new trollhunter and she is plagued by dreams and feelings she doesn’t understand.
Chapter Summary: Jim learns about her sister’s secret. Y/n gets a book and a suprise.

Y/n was laying down on the couch watching tv when the feeling caught her. A shiver ran through her spine. Her heart felt hollow. She sat down on the couch with her feet on the ground trying to shake the vertigo she was suddenly feeling.
She looked down at the ground but the carpet was no longer there, instead, there was tall grass hiding her boots, boots that she didn’t remember putting on.
She was walking to the edge of the cliff, to a man wearing heavy armor that was kneeling at the edge looking down at the sea.
“What have you done?” Her own scream shook her bones. She ran to the edge, trying to prove herself wrong. She looked down but the body was already being washed by the sea. The image made her anger start to boil inside of her.
“What have you done?” She whispered not taking her eyes from the water. The violent waves imitated the turbulence of her heart.
Her legs quickly gave out. She felt like someone was reaching through her chest and ripping her heart.
“No” a broken sob escaped her lips.
She stretched her hand down towards the ocean like it would return what she lost, like it would fill back the hole where her heart used to be.
The voices of her brother and friends started to fill the room, bringing back Y/n from her haze. The carpet was under her feet again but so was the grief and a cold space next to her.
The trollhunters were returning triumphant from their second quest with the second Triumbric Stone.
“Y/n you won’t believe what happened!!” Toby screamed.
Y/n turned to them. She couldn’t see well, her view was blurry. She could recognise each of them by their clothes, their voices. She was dizzy like she had just stepped out of the most violent rollercoaster.
Toby gave a nudge to Claire and she slowly took out a stick that looked like stone.
“Y/n, are you alright?” her brother asked after noticing the pain on his sister’s face.
She nodded with a smile and got closer to see what the teenagers were showing her. What Y/n believed to be a long piece of stone opened into something longer, a gray staff made of quartz taller than her.
Something in Y/n shifted. Her vision was blurry but she could see the staff clear as day. The dark quartz shining with purple reflects, the handle made of black stone.
“The shadow staff” her raspy voice was full of anger, of grief “How did you get this?” She said louder.
She didn’t understand a word of her brother's explanation, just one name, Angor Rot.
“He shouldn’t have this. You shouldn’t have this” She laughed incredulously “Why’d he had this? It’s her’s” Y/n screamed and took the staff from Claire’s hand.
The grief she felt during her vision grew. She felt the tears fall to the ground. She couldn’t see, the pain had made everything dark.
“Sorry, sister” a woman whispered, making Y/n drop the staff and fell to her knees letting out a guttural scream.

The heavy darkness became a warm soft orange light. In the tall ceiling, Y/n could see the shadows dance and for a moment, no grief existed. But the moment was cut short by the sounds of glass clinking, the heaviness returning to her chest.
“Ah, I see you’re awake” Vendel walked to the head of the stone bed “ Do you know where you are?”
Y/n nodded sitting up.
“TrollMarket” it hurted to talk.
“Do you know who you are?”
“Do you know what you are, Y/n?” A woman’s voice screamed at her.
Y/n knew it was just Vendel and her. She knew the voice came from inside her brain.
“Y/n Lake”
Vendel nodded.
“Do you remember what happened last night?”
She knew. She could see clearly now, see the confusion, the fear on everyone’s eyes, on her brother’s eyes. She also remembered the anger, the sadness, the hot tears in her eyes, her mind chanting ‘She died. He killed her’.
“Yes” she said between tears.
“You’ve been under a spell” Vendel explained “There’s a barrier in your head dividing your memories, between who you are and who you were” with his finger he drew a line in the air.
“I know” Y/n took her hand to her throat.
“You know?” Vendel shifted his cane to his right hand. He was surprised.
Y/n nodded.
The troll was about to ask another question when a loud meow erupted from TrollMarket.
“Alfred, no!” She heard Jim running but the cat was faster.
Al ran to Y/n’s lap and started to rub their faces together. He was relieved.
“I see” said Vendel.
Jim stopped by the entrance. His eyes focussed on her sister.
Y/n felt the shame rise. She was afraid. What if Jim was mad at her for keeping a secret and almost hurting his friends?
“Y/n” Jim ran to her sister, hugging her with all his strength.
Y/n was confused she was prepared for Jim anger, but not this.
“Jim” she caressed his head, brushing his hair with her fingers.
Her brother held her even tighter in response “I’m sorry” he said.
“No, you shouldn’t be sorry. I’m sorry, Jim. Last night was scary and I should’ve…”
Jim shook his head.
“It’s my fault. I dragged you into this…”
“Jim, is okay. This was going to happen even if I didn’t knew you are the trollhunter”
Jim lifted his head from Y/n’s side.
“She is right” Vendel interrupted “The spell has a expiration date. Even if you didn’t told her she would have this reactions to the reminders of her past life”
“So, it wasn’t my fault?” Al peeked his head from between the siblings.
“Woah” Jim jumped back “He talked”
Y/n laughed.
“No, it’s not your fault” Vendel said.
“He talked. How can he do that?” Jim pointed to Al.
“Yes, I did. I’m Y/n familiar” Al sat at Jim’s feet.
“Familiar?”
“Is like a wizard assistant” Vendel explained.
“Wizard?” Jim’s eyes shifted between Alfred and Y/n.
Y/n smiled. She was still just as confused as Jim.
“So the red light, that was you and not the staff?” Jim asked remembering the night before.
Y/n looked at Vendel with her eyebrows furrowed.
“Yes. Y/n used to be a powerful wizard”
“What?” The siblings said at the same time.
“I don’t think we should push anymore, Vendel” cautioned Alfred.
“I think we should work to make the barrier fall. After all, having Y/n next to the trollhunter may be of great help” The troll looked at Y/n “I could try help to return to who you were in exchange of your help against Gunmar”
“Of course” Y/n answered immediately. There was nothing to discuss, she was going to help magic or not magic.
“That’s settled then. I’ll see you tomorrow”
“I’ll see you tomorrow” Y/n smiled and left with Jim and Alfred.
“Y/n, are you sure?” Al asked once they were far enough from Vendel.
“Why wouldn’t I?”
Al didn’t answer.
“So, you can do magic?” Jim asked.
“Yes, I mean, I only tried moving stuff”
“Awesome” Jim said “that’s so cool”
They laughed.
The walk was cut short by a scream.
“Y/n!” It was Toby.
Y/n turned around and was tackled by the younger boy.
“Oh god, I’m glad you’re okay” he held her tight “I was so worried”
Y/n chuckled, reciprocating the hug.
“I’m sorry, Tobes. I didn’t mean to scare you” Y/n said through the pain in her throat.
“I’m glad you’re okay too” Claire said. Her eyes fixated on the ground.
Y/n lifted a hand from Toby’s back and grabbed Claire’s hand with a smile. The girl lifted her eyes.
“Thank you” Y/n mouthed.
Claire smiled back.

Y/n was browsing the back of Douxie’s bookstore. Those last bookshelf that no one ever looks at.
She had never heard of some the books and that didn’t surprise her. What did surprise her was the top shelf. The first three books didn’t have its title written on it, they looked old, worn, loved. The three that followed were a couple of her favorite books, books that she had loved with all her heart. They were old, even the most recently published seemed loved.
Y/n stroked the spine of all the books in the row, her finger stopping on a small red book, like the first three, it was old and didn’t have the title written on the spine. Y/n grabbed it. It didn’t have the title written anywhere. She traced the golden details but before she could open it, Douxie came looking for her.
“Hey, love” he said after a customer closed the door.
Y/n smiled.
Douxie and her had been taking things slow. After their talk they’d hang out a couple times a week until Y/n got “sick” after the shadow staff episode, then they started hanging out every day.
One afternoon, Douxie called Y/n after she left several texts unanswered and Barbara answered. She told him about Y/n “sickness” so he stopped by. He sat at the foot of the bed and talked with her. At first it was just him doing the talking. He would tell her about the rude customers, about that old lady that went to the library with her dog and how Archie almost got his tail bitten but mostly he would talk about music. Douxie would show her his new favorite song and the new songs he had written.
By the time Y/n got her voice back they would sit side by side at the head of her twin bed with Alfred between their legs. Y/n enjoyed Douxie presence. She found comfort in the small domesticity he had created
“There’s something about him” she told her mother over tea one night after Douxie left for his shift at Benoit’s when her mother commented on Y/n and Douxie’s relationship.
Douxie had caught her staring a couple times during one of their lazy afternoons. She would look at him. Just observe him. She would follow the bridge of his nose with her eyes, having to stop his fingers from doing the job. She would imagine how his soft disheveled black and blue hair would feel between her fingers.
Y/n tried to engrain every little detail into her head. How his eyes would close when he smiled, how he would mindlessly scratch Al’s head, how he hums while making any task, how he knew how to make tea the way she liked, how he would scratch his head when he was nervous. She tried to embroider his little actions into her brain because a voice deep in her heart would remind her how easy it was to forget.
“But how could I forget those hazel eyes?” She would ask but the voice wouldn’t answer.
“Doux” Y/n turned around with the book in her arms.
“What’d you have there?” He furrowed his brow.
“Ummh…I don’t know” she gave him the book “Sorry, I was shamelessly snooping”
He chuckled and took the book from Y/n’s hands. When the book left her hands a piece of paper fell to the ground.
“It’s okay” Douxie smiled “You can do anything you want”
Y/n crouched down and opened the folded piece of paper. It was a music sheet. The paper was really old. Y/n was afraid to touch it too much and break it. The ink where the title was written was smudged but she recognised the piece instantly.
“Oh, I really like this one” she whispered to herself.
“You know it?” Douxie asked.
“Yeah, it’s my…” Y/n brows furrowed.
“It’s my sister’s favorite” almost fell from her mouth.
She shook her head.
“Well…It’s not really my favorite but I really like it” she corrected.
For a moment, Y/n thought about the incident that happened the other day. Thought about the sadness that the shadow staff would bring every time she would look at it and, most important, what that voice had whispered to her ‘Sorry, sister’. Could it be that she left someone so important behind that now they were trying to claw their way out of the exile of her memories?
Y/n gave the paper back to Douxie.
“I would like to hear you play it sometime” He smiled.
“Sure” Y/n smiled back, her cheeks slightly red.
Douxie looked the book on his hands for a second and looked back to Y/n and said:
“You know, this is a really good anthology. It could be really good to start reading again. Would you like to check it out?”
Y/n smile grew. She had told him she wanted to start to read for pleasure again when she found out that he worked on a library. She couldn’t believe he remembered that.
“Yes” She took the book and started walking to the couch but before she sat down she retraced her steps and stood in front of Douxie once again.
“Thanks” she kissed his cheek.
Douxie smiled, his cheeks turning crimson the moment her lips touched him.
Y/n carefully flipped through the yellow pages, inspecting the small letter and finding some illustrations but what surprised her the most was a short note on the last page: ‘I’m so sorry about your book. I hope you love this version too. —H.C”
Y/n smiled at the relic in her hands and wondered if the previous owner of the book loved it as the one they lost and if they ever forgive H.C. She stood up to go to Douxie and ask him but before she could her phone rang. It was her alarm reminding her about her appointment with Vendel.
In the last week, Vendel believed he had made some progress on Y/n spell but she wasn’t so sure. The visions she’s been having disappeared and her nightmares too but no memories appeared. And for a moment, she thought her lack of nightmares were a good thing but she quickly found herself missing them too. She missed the people inside her dreams: the tall man that would walk with his hands behind his back, the woman that was always too far off her reach and that soft blue light that seemed to follow her everywhere.
She found the hole in her chest growing and could only be ignored when she wasn’t alone but she wasn’t sure how much she could be this clingy with the people she loved.
“Hey, Doux. I have to go” She grabbed her purse and walked to the registry.
“Oh, okay “ For a moment Y/n thought she saw him deflated “I’ll guess I’ll be seeing you soon”
She laughed.
“I’ve actually been seeing you a lot this week” he chuckled.
Y/n smile fell. Maybe her fear was becoming true.
“Yeah, bye” she faked a smile and started to walk to TrollMarket.
Her mind repeated her last week with Douxie. Maybe it was too much.

“So how are you feeling?” Vendel asked while he tinkered with some vials.
“Fine” Y/n answered from her place at the bed made of stone.
They had the same routine for the last couple days. He would ask how she was and she would say ‘fine’. She wasn’t lying, she was fine, just fine. She hadn’t remembered anything yet. She had hoped that by now, at least, a small memory would’ve returned.
“Still no memories, huh?” He kept working with the vials.
“No” she saw him stop moving for a second but he kept doing what he was doing.
“Have patience. It’s a process” he turned to her, knocking a vial with his elbow.
“Careful!” She stretched her hands from her seat on the other side of the room.
Vendel didn’t took his eyes from Y/n, smiling proudly when he saw her shocked face.
The glass vile was floating four centimetres from the floor, a faint scarlet light surrounding it.
“Put it back on the table” Vendel asked.
With a small movement of her fingers she put the vial back on the table.
“I can’t believe it “ she looked at the palm of her hands.
“I told you to be patient” he got closer to her.
Y/n looked around the room. Everything seemed different. She recognised the stones around her, she could name most of the stuff inside the vials, she could even read the book in trollish that was next to her with ease.
“Thank you” she smiled and hugged Vendel.
The troll went stiff when she touched him, making her back up.
“Sorry” she chuckled.
“It’s okay, Y/n” he patted her shoulder making a small streak of electricity run through it.

Totally random ask, but I'm so curious to know :) What are some of your OTPs or other loved ships for Harvest Moon? I'm mostly curious about FoMT of course, but I'd love to know them all!

I've had a think, and I'm a bit surprised to say that that I actually don't have that many OTPs for the Harvest Moon franchise.
I used to be very supportive of the Canon rival pairs, but the older I've gotten, the more I realise how "meh" most of their relationships are. Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of rival couples. It just feels like most of them were a case of "pair up whoever goes together best" rather than "soul mates who truly belong together".
For OTPs, the few I can't imagine being with anyone else are:
- Duke x Manna (FoMT) : let's face it, neither of these characters would be as interesting without the other 😅
- Karen x Rick (FoMT) : one of the few rival pairs that I feel yep, they belong together, 100%
- Nina x Galen (AWL/DS) : bittersweet, but they belong together!
For other ships I love in general:
- Harris x Claire (FoMT) : this is my rare-pair and I will die on this hill! Marvelous, if you ever remake HM64/BTN, let me marry Harris, please!!!
- Mary x Gray (FoMT): I love their dynamic of the tough guy and the quiet girl. I love their heart events. Not an OTP, though, since I also love Gray x Claire.
- Claire x Cliff (FoMT): Ohmygosh these two are so cute together!

Winter was not Cliff’s favorite season – truth be told it was probably his least favorite season, but he tried not to dwell too much on how much he disliked it, because that only made Winter seem even worse. Still, it had never been an easy season for him to get through, for a number of reasons. And ever since his little… accident a couple years ago, the cold of winter seemed to hit him even harder.
Doctor Trent had mentioned that sensitivity to cold was a common for people who had suffered hypothermia, like he had. That didn’t make it any better. Sure, Cliff could afford warmer clothing these days, and he had a warm home to always come back to, but there were just some days, when the snow fell and the icy wind blew, that a chill settled into Cliff’s bones and stubbornly refused to leave.
Today was one such day, and Cliff was happy it was his day off, so he didn’t have to even think about leaving the house. A blizzard was forecasted to come in later this evening, and already the snow was beginning to fall thickly.
Cliff did everything he could to keep the house warm and cozy, keeping the fire well fed, baking some fresh bread to enjoy with hearty soup for dinner, kept the kettle nice and hot. But despite the warm sweater and thick woolen socks, and a nice mug of his favorite tea, he just couldn’t quite shake a lingering chill.
Not until Claire came back from completing her chores for the day, shaking snow from her coat and stamping it from her boots at the front door. Here cheeks were red, but she seemed positively thrilled when she announced, “It’s really starting to come down out there.” Claire loved winter.
She walked over to the couch and leaned over the back, giving Cliff a peck on the cheek. She smirked at him, bundled up under a blanket. “Cold today?”
“A little.”
Claire rounded the couch, and settled in next to him, rubbing some warmth back into her hands. Even still, her fingers felt icy against Cliff’s skin as she snaked them under the blanket to pull it over her as well. Without speaking, they settled in against each other, rearranging themselves until Claire had Cliff resting against her chest and her arms held them together.
They turned their attention to the evening news and weather report.
Claire squeezed him gently, holding Cliff in her arms, and he slowly began to feel that stubborn chill in his bones thaw. Winter might not be his favorite season, but it certainly came with its perks. Cuddling like this just couldn’t happen in the sticky heat of summer.

Favorite character: popuri, my first wife!!
Least favorite character: I used to hate Kai because I was eight and wanted to marry popuri so I hated my rival, but I’ve grown past that!! He’s a chill guy!! Now it’s Duke. Especially with the redesign.
Five favorite ships: big fan of gray x Claire after playing through the remake!! I have a soft spot for a few of the original rival ships, like doctor x elli and cliff x Ann. Also have become a fan of kai x rick and Karen x popuri!
Character I find the most attractive: gray but like, specifically redesign gray. Listen I know people miss his hat but they turned him into a pretty boy and I like pretty boys. I’ve also always thought manna was pretty!
Character I would marry: popuri. 8-year-old me would be proud.
Character I would be best friends with: still popuri, but I could also see myself getting along well with Mary!!
A random thought: I bought the remake planning to marry popuri as a girl to fulfill my childhood dream but ended up going for gray instead 😭
An unpopular opinion: said this earlier but I actually prefer gray without the hat ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
My canon otp: if we’re counting rival ships as “canon”, doctor and elli or cliff and Ann!!
My non-canon otp: Rick x Kai, enemies to lovers, slow burn, 500k
Most badass character: hmmm I think Ann could kill a man if she wanted to but she’s too friendly to!
Most epic villain: uhhh Carter when he yells at you during confessionals? Does this game have a villain?
Pairing I am not a fan of: it used to be Kai x popuri for petty reasons but I’ve kind of gotten over that? I still prefer them as friends though!
Character I feel the writers screwed up: ok not a writer thing but kappa’s redesign…..what happened to him…..he used to be just a funny lil guy….
Favorite friendship: I like how gray and Kai are bros!!
Character I most identify with: probably Mary!!
Character I wish I could be: idk if I’d necessarily want popuri’s life but I am envious of her natural pink hair

I wanted to post a little something while I finish some digital drawings I’m currently making (including the characters suggested for the six fanarts challenge. I still need some characters though c’: ).
I like Manna’s hair in her remake version, but I honestly prefer her original design, not sure why (maybe because she’s one of the characters I like the most).
As for Carter, well, he’s also one of my favorite characters, and I do like both versions of him, so I made him with his new outfit. I also made Cliff because he’s cute :’3 (and I think I accidentally made him look shorter than Claire(? )
Lillian, well, I just like her
Also, I prefer some of the ships that appeared in the 64 game, those being Popuri x Gray and Karen x Kai (except for the “Miss Karen” thing). I like the others one too (Mary x Gray, Popuri x Kai and Karen x Rick), but, I don’t know… They’re just cuter to me, so I drew them ;u;

That’s sad the game ended like this. I’m also a Claire x Gray shipper from back in the day. What a disappointment. Also the hat needs to be worn!
I miss the hat too, a great part of Gray's personality was lowering his hat's bill and hide his face. That made his shyness different from Cliff.
Also the hat +(the work clothes) made him look more rough. I love seeing the fanart or redesigns with the hat on.

Dawn of the Reboot Era: Sequels and Other Installments that are Spiritual Remakes
Recent news (as of last week) is that The Matrix is getting “a reboot.” When people here the word, they don’t think of new installments to a series (or a new story set in the same universe). Rather, audiences think the media franchise is getting remade, as all too often the word “reboot” has been thrown around to apply to movies that remake part of an existing series while retconning out of existence some undesirable part of the canon. These are both what’s happening now with movies
Fox’s X-Men movies are a great example of both. X-Men: First Class served as a prequel to everything that had happened with the original X-Men movies. The second movie, Days of Future Past, both established a retcon (eliminating the hated third movie, but also the great second one; it’s kinda vague how much has occurred) and yet had entirely new stories with new characters within the same continuity. The third movie continued that.
Since this is also the franchise that started the “treat supers seriously” trope - and undoubtedly influenced The Lord of the Rings in marketing, it’s perhaps possible to detect the direction Hollywood will be going in catering to nerds and nostalgia by looking at what X-Men does first. I wish I had thought of that sooner. It did not really occur to me that this rebooting thing was a thing until last night, when I had a third sample from outside the X-Men franchise (the first being The Matrix reboot).
“What about the second sample?”
Duh, The Force Awakens, which was a redux of A New Hope with a slightly better ensemble.
Anyway, The third was Jurassic World, which I watched before rewatching Jurassic Park. I probably should have done that the other way around, as I would have had my memory refreshed while watching World so as to get the best analysis. World is very much an homage to Park: it’s set on the same island, it uses the same premise (theme park, use of gene-splicing to create monsters with questionable ethics and pragmatics), it has a very similar plot structure (tourists ignore rules of the park while inside a vehicle, escaped giant predator attacks them, most of the adults occupy a high-tech command center while trying to keep everyone safe, young children have to get out of wrecked car without getting eaten only to jump off of a tall cliff and then evade carnage on a trek across the island and back to what passes for civilization, eventual human-dinosaur confrontation followed by a Gozilla-esque smack-down; meanwhile, something dastardly and corporate is going on to cause nearly everything). The primary (and most of the secondary) characters are also expies or combinations of the originals:
Claire is Hammond (businessperson in all white who sees nothing wrong with what she’s doing, is related to the children) and Dr. Grant (does not want kids, is forced to become a surrogate parent in a survival situation, takes charge in unexpected ways, grows into a more relationship-oriented person who is willing to have a family).
Owen is Muldoon (combat experience, interacts directly with raptors) and Sattler (is emotionally invested in animals, the heart of the party) and Malcolm (objects to everything on the principle that, by ignoring how nature works, it’s a recipe for mankind falling for its acts of hubris).
Gray is Timmy (younger sibling, highly annoying, extreme knowledge of current dinosaur science, has to be protected for some reason).
Zach is Lex (older sibling, cute for gender, mostly dead weight through the film, obnoxious in a typical way for a teenager, ends up having a redeeming moment of usefulness [in this case, by stepping up into the role of protective older sibling and role-model, rather than using wits to do something useful in a not-strictly-social way]).
Vic Hoskins is Dennis Nedry (overweight white dude enacts nefarious plans for a largely unknown third party [in this case, InGen] involving giving the dinosaurs to someone else).
Barry is Mr. Arnold (black guy who is fairly important for quite some time, gets attacked by raptors while doing something important for the group, is never seen alive again; unlike Arnold, Barry probably survives).
Dr. Henry Wu is...well, himself, but older, more cynical, and more corrupt.
Simon Masrani is Hammond’s enthusiastic side.
Lowery and Vivian are Mr. Arnold in job title.
It’s not the exact same movie, but it’s pretty damn close. Why? Because the idea isn’t to make something great, but to make something that is entertaining and rides on something great’s tailcoats, therefore bringing in money. There’s a second Jurassic World filming (most of the surviving characters, including Dr. Wu, but not the kids), just like how we are expecting The Last Jedi. I would not be surprised if they get the idea for a midquel to the earlier trilogy, like how we got Rogue One.
It’s the Hollywood take on fanfiction and expanded universes. Is it a bad thing? Not particularly: we complain about shitty movies all the time and, while these aren’t great, they are at least entertaining. That’s in part because they have a structure they can mimic and expand upon, just like with fanfiction.
It does, however, stink of the same corporate Hell-Hole the US was when fast food franchises weren’t dying. It would be nice to see something good and original and yet entertaining.

#14 - A kiss so desperate that the two wind around each other, refusing to let go until they're finished.
Featuring Cliff and Claire, and just the teeniest bit of angst and sadness to really make the desperation stick.
Cliff packed slowly. He didn't want to leave the inn, didn't want to leave Mineral Town, didn't want to leave his friends, and perhaps most desperately, he didn't want to leave Claire. But there was nothing to be done for it. He had no money. There was no work to be found in town. Doug had already given him as much of a break on rent as he could afford, and Cliff had relied on Claire to feed him for most of a season now. He hated how much he had to rely on the kindness of others, how much he took that he could never pay back. He had become a burden, and he couldn't stand that.
As much as he did not want to leave Mineral Town, a place that had begun to feel more like home in the last year than any place had for such a long time, Cliff had to go. He had to find a job, and there were absolutely none to be found. He'd thought something might have come up last autumn at the winery, Duke had hired him and another guy to be the manual laborers during the harvest, but at the end of it all, Michael had been offered the chance to stay on full time. Michael had gotten along with Duke like a house on fire, they laughed and joked like they were old friends, even though Michael had only rolled into town one one of the last boats of the summer.
Winter was coming to its close, Cliff had spent a year here, and the last six months truly visualizing Mineral Town as home, as the place he would grow old in with the woman he loved. Maybe even one day, have a family again.
But those dreams had dwindled as rapidly as his funds.
This wouldn't be goodbye forever, Cliff and Claire had had a very long discussion about this, about his leaving, and their future together. If he was lucky, he'd find work somewhere else, he could start earning money, and saving money, building skills that he could some day bring back to Mineral Town and then maybe, in a year or two, he could come back.
But... it was a heavy Maybe. Maybe Cliff would never be able to go back to Mineral Town. Maybe his travels for a job took him too far away. Maybe Claire would fall in love with someone else in his absence, someone who could always be here for her, who wouldn't leave.
Cliff shoved the last few items into his bag and zipped it closed. He slung the pack over his shoulder and turned towards the door. His eyes fell on the room's other occupant.
"I'm gonna miss you, man," Gray said, trying and failing to keep the emotion from his voice. "You sure you don't want anyone to go with you down to the pier?"
"No," Cliff said quietly, "That's okay, I'd rather go alone. I've said my goodbyes."
"Yeah, well, you've got one more." Gray offered his hand. Cliff took it, and they shook for a moment, before the two of them, with a wet chuckle, pulled into a hug. "Won't be the same here without you." Gray thumped him on the back before letting go.
Without another word, Cliff hitched his pack up over his shoulders, and walked out of the room he'd called home for the last year. Ann was sweeping the stairs, and she gave him a tight hug as he passed. Down at the bar, Doug shook his hand firmly and sent him off with a "Good luck, son."
It was snowing, and a bitter cold wind was tearing at Mineral Town. Nobody else was out in the streets, or in the square. With every step Cliff took towards the beach, his heart sunk. Claire wouldn't be here. he had specifically asked her to not see him off like this. They'd said their goodbyes last night, and he, quite frankly, wasn't certain he could get on the ferry if she was there with him.
Snow and sand crunched beneath his feet as he crossed the beach to the pier. He perched gingerly on the icy bench and watched the distant shape of the ferry grow closer on the roiling gray sea.
He shivered and pulled his coat tight around him - Claire's Starry night present to him - it was warm and sturdy. He'd get many good years of use out of it. Wearing it was like walking around in her embrace.
The ferry was almost there when another body settled on the bench next to Cliff.
"Hey," Michael said with a slight smile, he was always smiling. No wonder Duke had asked him to stay on at the winery with a sunny attitude like that. "Cold enough, huh?"
"Yeah..." Cliff didn't feel much like talking. And as much as he didn't want to resent Michael, because the man hadn't done anything to him personally, there was a mean corner of him mind that kind of hated the guy for taking his chance to stay in Mineral Town forever.
Michael was carrying a duffel bag, stuffed full, it looked. Cliff nodded towards it, "You taking a trip to the city?"
Michael shrugged. "For starters, yeah. Spend New Year's partying it up, from there, who knows where I'll go. Maybe spend the rest of the winter somewhere warm."
That didn't make any sense.
"But what about your job? The Winery? I know winter is a slow season, but surely Duke and Manna need your help still. They're letting you take a vacation that long?"
"Vacation?" Michael laughed. "Nah, bud, I quit the winery, like a couple days ago. Small town living is quaint and all, and nice for a little while, but I don't want to be in a little backwater hole like this for the rest of my life, you know." He grinned and nudged Cliff. "I mean, you're leaving too for brighter futures and greener pastures, right?"
Cliff's hands curled into fists. he'd never truly disliked Michael before, but right now he really wanted to hit that flippant, smug, carefree grin right off his face. Just to be certain he wasn't having some vivid hallucination, Cliff asked again. "You quit the winery?"
"Yeah." Michael shrugged. "I was gonna wait til after New Year's but honestly I can't even bear the thought of spending the holiday in this tiny town. I doubt there would even be a party, everyone would probably be in bed by nine." He scoffed. "Probably wouldn't even get a New Year's kiss. None of the girls here are even all that cute, and they're so old fashioned. You basically have to propose before they'll even let you hold hands."
Cliff stared at Michael dumbfounded. His mind raced with possibility. Maybe he could go back to the winery and ask for a job, but Duke had already rejected him once this year, what's to say they still won't want him. But he had to try, right? Worst they could say was 'no' and he would just have to catch the ferry tomorrow. Best case - he couldn't even think of the best case scenario in case he jinxed the whole thing. Anything for a chance. that' what he had promised Claire. He would do any job, try anything if it meant coming back to her sooner.
Cliff snapped out of it as the ferry pulled close to the pier, blowing its whistle to call any stragglers to hurry and catch their ride.
Someone was shouting his name. Michael nudged him. “Hey, isn’t that your girlfriend?”
Cliff turned and saw Claire standing on the steps at the top of the beach. She cupped her hands around her mouth and called, “CLIFF! WAIT!”
“I thought you dumped her,” Michael said with a dint of disdain. “She was certainly mopey about it when I saw her earlier when I was getting my last paycheck.” He scoffed again. “Kinda pathetic, ain’t she? Just a little too desperate, huh?”
Once again, Cliff was seized with the overwhelming urge to deck Michael. But he didn’t. He got to his feet and turned away from Michael and the docking ferry.
“Hey, where’re you going? The boat’s right here. They won’t wait for you.”
“I don’t care. I’ll catch the next one if I have to.” Cliff didn’t spare Michael another thought or a second glance. He took off running towards Claire. She took off running towards him too. The met in the middle of the beach and crashed into each other, throwing their arms around the other and holding on tight.
“Don’t go!” Claire gasped, taking his face in her cold hands. “Don’t go yet. Please. I-I think I found you a job. At the winery.”
“I know. Michael’s leaving.”
A smile broke out over Claire’s lips as she realized, as they both realized, Cliff might not have to leave. There might be a chance for him to stay in town. Maybe he wouldn’t have to go.
She pulled his face towards hers, drawing him into a fierce kiss. Their lips crashed against teeth, but neither pulled away. Cliff kissed her, letting all of the hope bubble up in his chest and drive him desperately forward. Claire let got of his face and wrapped her arms around his neck. Her held her close, as close as possible. He ignored the fear that maybe Duke and Manna still wouldn’t want him, maybe the winery didn’t really need an extra set of hands. Maybe he was just prolonging the inevitable and he would still have to leave Claire.
He held Claire close and kissed her as snow collected in their hair, and their fingers went numb in the cold, until finally, panting slightly for breath they broke the kiss. Cliff rested his forehead against Claire’s, he looked down at their intertwined hands before closing his eyes. In his heart he made a wish, he said a prayer.
I wish… Maybe… Please…
“I should probably go talk to Duke and Manna, huh?”
