#2 Ephesians

Eph 1:1-3

Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ The first word of every letter that Paul writes is his own name followed by at least one credential as the Apostle of Jesus Christ.  Why?  So his readers would know for sure it was him and because there were some who were forging his name trying to teach a false doctrine.  Paul’s authority came from God.  He didn’t choose this life-work; he was completely happy persecuting the little flock.  God chose this for him, therefore he stated as much in every letter.  Remember also that Paul is not one of the twelve Apostles that walked with Jesus.  He was disqualified,  (Acts 1:21-22).  Paul was sent to the Gentiles (Rom 11:13), though he never neglected to preach the mystery of Christ to his fellow countrymen whenever possible, (Rom 9:3)

by the will of God What is the will of God?  Paul’s going to explain what that is and whether he preaches it willingly or not a new dispensation will be enacted!  (1 Cor 9:17)  God was doing something new and he used Paul to explain his will going forward.

to the saints which are at Ephesus, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus: Ephesus was the capital of Asia Minor and a large commercial center in the Mediterranean.  It was home to one of the seven wonders of the world, The Temple of Artemis.  People worshiped the false goddess, Diana and many people profited from selling idols in Ephesus.  Gentile (Eph 2:11, 3:1, 3:8, 4:17) saints were rich physically speaking but needed to understand that true riches were not found in worldly treasures.

2 Grace be to you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. You’ll hear Paul say this a lot because God is offering grace and peace today, as opposed to judgment and war when he comes back to set up his kingdom, (Rev 19:11).  Yes, we still live in a present evil world filled with sinners who ignore God’s offer of salvation through the blood of his son Jesus.  The good part about that is people can be saved, the bad part about that is we have to live with them until they (hopefully) get saved.

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: Ephesians along with Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon are known as the prison epistles; meaning Paul wrote them while imprisoned for preaching the gospel of the mystery!  Don’t think of our prisons today where inmates get three squares, a TV and time to workout or play cards!  These prisons were the most miserable places you could imagine.  He’s in chains, with daily beatings.  It’s cold, he’s naked, and starving.  His circumstances couldn’t get any worse…and yet, the first thing out of his mouth is blessings!

Ephesians will teach us the true meaning of this present-tense-truth of being spiritually blessed.  Think about it!  The glory of the omnipotent, omniscient, holy, eternal, almighty, God lives in you!  How much richer can we get?!  When we learn and appreciate the riches of God’s grace, we can live with love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control in this present evil age, (Gal 1:4).

May you know goodness and grace and delight and adventure and fun and forgiveness in the coming year. May you have courage to let go of the things that are diminishing you and strength to carry the things that weigh heavy on you. May you find your brokenness healed and your rough edges challenged. May you never be afraid of your shadow but may you always be brave enough to lean in to what is dark and unknown in order to find and reveal the light. And may you find souls who will walk with you and alongside you and believe in you as you live your story out loud. May you never forget that you can make this world a more glorious place to live in, for everyone, simply by loving others as yourself.
