psychoanalyzing Aziraphale and Crowley through the ages instead of doing my research project that's due next week. pt. 4: ROME
If the Crucifixion was a turning point, when we get to Rome just 8 years later, Everything Is Different.
Tumblr media
They have completely reversed roles.
Aziraphale approaches Crowley for the first time.
Aziraphale is happy to see Crowley for the first time.
Crowley is standoffish and rude for the first time.
For eight years, Aziraphale has not been able to stop thinking about Crowley showing Jesus all the kingdoms of the world, for no reason other than to do something kind for a poor carpenter from Galilee.
Aziraphale is Ready to Rumble. "Oh! Do mine ears deceive me? Is it that devilishly banterful demon I hear?" Crowley always starts with a jab at Aziraphale, but he's not doing it this time. So Aziraphale takes a wild stab at it. Az is Ready to Banter. "Still a demon, then?" Except that he just so happens to hit upon the one thing Crowley is now extremely sensitive and bitter about and it does not land.
Tumblr media
[Side note. I read that post with the idea that because of the Crucifixion changing the game for the humans, Aziraphale thinks that maybe it has changed the rules for demon absolution as well, and therefore his question, "Still a demon, then?" is totally sincere and hopeful. I am not sure I accept this headcanon personally, but I can. not. stop. thinking about it. No, there's no point to this sidenote.]
I guess my take is that Az is just really, really bad at flirting / positive interactions with equals, since his only practice is with the other angels, who terrify him, and humans who are, well, not on his level.
Aziraphale makes this sincere and ham-fisted attempt at asking Crowley out, asking Crowley for what he, Az, wants. Making the approach, making the first move. And Crowley is so over everything, over humanity, over God, even possibly over Aziraphale. Or over taking the first steps towards Aziraphale. Presumably he knew Az was there -- they seem to have that sixth sense for when another celestial / occult being materializes. But he just goes to get a drink, not to poke fun at the angel. But the angel pokes him instead. And he accepts. "I've never eaten an oyster." "Okay, I'll bite. Show me oysters, angel. Show me there's still something worth getting excited about on this sad earth."
And then.
Tumblr media
"Oh, well, let me tempt you to--"
Every other interaction they've had, Aziraphale has made sure to remind Crowley of their roles, directly or indirectly. "You're a demon, it's what you do." "You can't question the Almighty." "I'm not consulted on policy decisions."
But this time. This time, whether it's a laughably bad attempt at a joke or the first Freudian slip in history, Az flips the script on him, reverses their roles. If the Crucifixion was the first time Aziraphale sees Crowley's kindness, maybe this is the first time Crowley sees Aziraphale's inner bastard. Hard swallow.

The best TV/ movie kisses in my humble opinion
I broke down the ranking into 3 categories for tv and 4 categories for movies. (1. Deep, passionate, sexy kisses that make me feel things 2. Soft, sweet, romantic kisses that make me kick my feet and giggle 3. Kisses that emotionally traumatized me 4. (For movies) they didn’t kiss but they wanted to kiss and should have)
So without further ado, spookymulder97’s best media kisses of all time:
TV
Deep, passionate, sexy kisses that make me feel things:
Nick/Jess first kiss (New Girl, 2x15)- this scene is burned into my memory and is what inspired this list in the first place
Stede/ Ed kiss in the captains quarters (Our Flag Means Death 2x6)- the way Stede grabs Ed and the way they grab each other is spicy
Amelia/Kai first kiss (Greys Anatomy 18x8)- I felt like this was building from the moment Kai was introduced, it started off as sweet but then they were kissing as if they wanted to devour one another
Soft, sweet, romantic kisses that make me kick my feet and giggle
Nick/Charlie first kiss (Heartstopper 1x3)- the ULTIMATE kicking my feet and giggling moment. The foot touching, the pinky holding, the sweet first kiss. It’s what I wish for every young queer person
Jamie/Dani first kiss (Haunting of Bly Manor 1x4)- I was rooting for Dani to be queer from the moment I saw her and this moment was just so sweet. I was rooting for them
Mulder/Scully NYE kiss (X-Files 7x4)- so soft and sweet. And then he puts his arm around her, heart eyes.
Kisses that emotionally traumatized me (and why)
Aziraphale/Crowley break up kiss (Good Omens 2x6) because “we could’ve been…us” I’m still crying
The doctor/ Rose Journey’s End kiss (Doctor Who 4x13) because 10 looking on was so sad. The kiss itself was amazing but the whole storyline was sad. Watched it once and then never again
Stede/Ed first kiss (Our Flag Means Death 1x9), while their first kiss was beautiful and did have me kicking my feet. What happened next broke my heart. In my head, Stede and Ed rowed off together
Movies
Deep, passionate, sexy kisses that make me feel things
Will/Elizabeth marriage kiss in the rain in the middle of a sword fight (Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End)- they hard core smooched. In the rain. On a boat. In the middle of sword fighting. Need I say more?
Alex/ Henry kiss in the portrait room (Red, White, and Royal Blue)- holy crap! I could feel the heat through my screen
Tom/ Patrick kiss outside Patrick’s apt (My Policeman) -started off as a kind of sad moment but then they kissed and there was so much emotion in it
Soft, sweet, romantic kisses that make me kick my feet and giggle
Han/Leia first kiss (Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back)- THAT CHEMISTRY!
Katniss/Peeta kiss on the beach (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire)- so tender, so sweet
Peter/ MJ upside down kiss (Spider-Man)- one word: ICONIC
Kisses that emotionally traumatized me and why
Ennis/Jack reunion kiss (Brokeback Mountain) mostly because their story makes me sad
Alex/Henry first kiss (Red, White, and Royal Blue) the kiss was so passionate at first but then Henry thinking he seriously messed up, leaving, and ghosting Alex hurt my soul for both of them
Harry/Cho kiss (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix) kind of awkward and also sad because they were just talking about her dead boyfriend
They didn’t kiss but they wanted to and should have (and it made me kick my feet and squeal)
Druig/Makkari after Druig says “my beautiful beautiful Makkari” (Eternals)- need I say more?
Darcy/Elizabeth field scene (Pride and Prejudice)- “you have bewitched me body and soul” COME ON
Johnny/Baby during the love is strange dance scene (Dirty Dancing)- the tension between them! Johnny wanted to kiss her so bad

psychoanalyzing Aziraphale and Crowley through the ages instead of doing my research project that's due next week. pt. 6: Shakespeare's Globe
The Hamlet scene at Shakespeare's Globe is the one that got me started on this exercise, because I got it into my head that this is the vignette where they are the most open, unguarded, and besotted with each other (before the closing Ritz scene, of course). I *might* talk myself out of this as I go along, because the Bastille comes next and we all know what a ride that one was. So. Come along on this journey with me, friend.
Tumblr media
Exhibit A. Aziraphale's smiles.
They are almost completely unfettered in this scene. He tries to keep them under wraps, not let Crowley see, he really does, bless him, but he really, really fails. "Oh, he's not my friend, we've never met before, we don't know each other." Followed, seconds later, by, "Come on, Hamlet! Buck up!" and the most carefree, dazzling smile that has ever been bestowed upon one poor pining demon.
Tumblr media
Aziraphale is having the Time. Of. His. Life. His favorite playwright, his favorite foods, his favorite demon.
And the exchange they have is a well-worn routine for them by now. They recite the customary temptation, resistance, mollification, and acquiescence like lines in a play. "Fine, heads." "Tails, I'm afraid, you're going to Scotland." But Aziraphale knows, from the beginning, that he's getting something out of this meeting.
And then, Shakespearse says, "It'd take a miracle to get anyone to come and see Hamlet," and the aha music plays, and Aziraphale goes, That's my cue! He immediately looks to Crowley, before Crowley even glances to him. He's so certain he's going to get what he wants that he loses focus on doing the puppy dog eyes and looks at Crowley's mouth instead.
"Yes, alright, I'll do that one, my treat."
"Oh, really?" asks the bastard innocently, as if he didn't know the instant Shakespeare said it that his demon would do it for him. As if he didn't know that this was the purpose of the visit from Anthony J'acts of Service Crowley all along.
Exhibit B. Crowley circling.
I love whoever first noted the circling as a protective snake move. And it is interesting to me that he doesn't do it all the time. I think this scene is the first time we see a proper snake circle. Let's do a quick catalog, shall we?
On the wall in Eden, he kind of winds his way from behind to Aziraphale's left as an actual snake. In Mesopotamia, they do a quick one to tap Az on the shoulder before popping up on his left. At Golgotha, she just approaches from the left. In Rome, he's slouching in his ennui. In Wessex, they come towards each other head-on and retreat head-off [INTEReSTING, this is one of the most head-on scenes they have. Mirrored maybe by the Bandstand scene, where they approach from opposite sides and then Crowley walks directly away from Aziraphale. HMMMMMMM].
Bastille -- no circling. St. James's Park in the 1880s -- no circling. 1940s church -- no circling. 1960s Soho -- no circling (only hearts breaking).
The biggest, most obvious circling moments, the ones that seem to say something about their relationship, are (1) this one at the Globe. (2) Crowley protectively walking around Az as they cross the street to the bookshop to enjoy the Châteauneuf-du-Pape. (3) The full, appraising circle in Tadfield before the infamous vintage-coat stain-removal miracle. (4) Crowley-as-Aziraphale circling around him protectively in the park with his ice cream cone as they await their kidnappings. These are moments where they feel like they are aligned, and the anxiety is low enough that Crowley can be expressive about his protectiveness. (Notably, no circlings at Tadfield Airbase, which maybe speaks to Crowley's intense vulnerability there.)
So anyway.
Back to the Globe. Aziraphale is radiantly happy and barely conceals it. Crowley is confidently circling and tempting with the cool and offhand certainty that he knows how this will go. There is very little true anxiety in this scene.
"You can not actually be suggesting what I infer you're implying." Crowley doesn't let him get away with it: "Which is?"
"That only one of us goes to Scotland and does both. The blessing and the tempting."
This is a big step forward. According to book canon, the Arrangement was established around 1100, if I recall correctly, so they've been doing this for half a millennium at this point.
Aziraphale does have a genuine ripple of worry when he says, "If Hell finds out, they won't just be angry. They'll destroy you." But Crowley soothes it away with his next line in the script: "Nobody ever has to know. Toss you for Edinburgh." And it is enough for Aziraphale.
Tumblr media
Apart from that, they have the usual back-and-forth of ooh I'm an angel, ooh you're a demon, I do good, you do bad, blah blah blah. But it's all part of the script. Crowley even insists that Aziraphale be the one who says the subtext out loud, and Aziraphale does it.
"You cannot actually be suggesting... what I infer... you're implying." Crowley doesn't let him get away with it: "Which is?"
"That only one of us goes to Scotland and does both. The blessing and the tempting."
This is a big step forward. Crowley is asking for something. Crowley is insisting that Aziraphale acknowledge the ask. Aziraphale does it -- both the acknowledging and the tempting.
According to book canon, the Arrangement was established around 1100, if I recall correctly, so they've been doing this for half a millennium at this point. They are comfortable with each other. They trust each other. They are openly enjoying each other's company, enjoying the banter, and enjoying doing things for each other. Yeah, Az now has another stop on his Scotland itinerary, but that wasn't the point of this meeting. The point was to make eyes at and/or circle each other and/or eat grapes and/or watch each other eat grapes.
See, I don't think I've talked myself out of it. I think this is the most open we see them together until the end. The Bastille scene is cranked up to 11, but part of that feral energy comes from the anxiety creeping back in.

psychoanalyzing Aziraphale and Crowley through the ages instead of doing my research project that's due next week. pt. 7: The Bastille
[Okay, before I get started, I just want to acknowledge that recent post about how the Bastille actually fell in 1789 and therefore 1793 makes no sense as a year for this scene and therefore Aziraphale was so Extra with his contrived rescue scenario that he miracled the Bastille back into being, because I have been internally howling with laughter about that since I read it.]
So, this is just about 200 years after the Globe meeting. They're in very similar place in their relationship, but the anxiety is creeping back in. They are comfortable with each other, they know each other well by this point, and they have layers of unspoken understanding.
Tumblr media
The scene starts with the first time Crowley calls Aziraphale "angel." (I don't count the "You're an angel" in Eden, because that was, in my mind, about his title, not a term of endearment, and in the book and the script book, it's meant to be sarcastic but Aziraphale misses it.) And then we get treated to another one of Michael Sheen's signature Incandescent Aziraphale Faces. But by the time he's turned around, he's reeled it in. Even if he physically can't restrain himself from giving Crowley a thrice-over, he doesn't unleash the Smile again this scene.
Because now, Aziraphale has gotten a letter from Gabriel. Heaven is taking note of the "frivolous" way he's been living on Earth, and he has to cover his tracks a bit. I know people like the idea that there was no reprimand, and Aziraphale made it all up just to get Crowley to go out on a date with him. I tend to take the story more at face value. I know Aziraphale's a bastard, but he's also a high-anxiety people-pleaser and I feel like a ruse that elaborate would end him at this point in his character development.
Aziraphale isn't the only one more on edge this time. When Az says, "I suppose I should say thank you," Crowley leaps to his feet, which kind of ruins the effect of the casual sprawl he had going on milliseconds prior. "Don't say that. If my people hear I rescued an angel, I'll be the one in trouble, and my lot do not send rude notes." This is the first time we see Crowley worried about consequences of his dalliances on Earth.
We're also back to debating what it is demons and angels do and don't do. Crowley says he got a commendation and we get the first, "So all this is your demonic work!?" from Aziraphale, to be repeated in the 1940s, "These people are working for you!"
It's a little tragic, really. We go from Aziraphale's hopeful flirtation and delight in getting Crowley to do little kindnesses for him, to these accusations of atrocities. Defense mechanisms. If Crowley is truly cruel to the humans, maybe Aziraphale can convince himself to put these feelings to rest. Or convince himself that it's okay that he keeps Crowley at arm's length while continuing to benefit from his acts of service.
On Crowley's side, he is still of course ready to leap to Aziraphale's aid at a moment's notice. But maybe we are starting to see that element that David Tennant talks about in a couple of interviews -- "Crowley loves Aziraphale and he hates that he loves Aziraphale, it's really annoying for him." He's tense and frustrated here.
Tumblr media
And then, there's the whole casual second-hand murder of the French executioner. I can't quite wrap my noggin around it. At the old hospital in Tadfield, we have that moment of discomfort when Crowley turns the paintball guns into real guns, and then the relief of realizing they're all having miraculous escapes. But there's no moment of relief here. It's feasible that somebody recognizes him before he gets to the guillotine and he winds up fine. But that's not what's implied by the end of the scene.
So, part of me wonders if this is another one of Aziraphale's chaotic backpedals. If he really did manipulate the situation to get a date with Crowley, maybe he feels like he needs to balance that out somehow by doing something that's "really" bad to somehow justify his own "bad behavior" to himself? "I'm a bad angel, so it's okay for me to do bad things like go on romantic dates with demons in Paris"?
Or is it some kind of roundabout display for Crowley, to say, look, I can be demonic too, I'm not just a soft foodie.
Or maybe he's just being petty and getting revenge on Jean-Claude for locking him up and trying to touch his clothes.
I'm not totally satisfied by any of these explanations. Either way, there's a lot of angst at play under the surface in this one, and it lays the backdrop for the first breakup a hundred years later.

psychoanalyzing Aziraphale and Crowley through the ages instead of doing my research project that's due next week. pt. 10: You Go Too Fast For Me, Crowley
Okay, I'm going to try and only include things I haven't seen written elsewhere, because this scene has gotten so much love over the last 3 years.
Tumblr media
First thing's first. Crowley notices the font of holy water in the church in 1941, and I know they're idiots, but I can not believe it takes him twenty-six years to come up with an idea on how to get ahold of it. 😂
Second. One of my favorite things to do when re-watching Good Omens is to watch the face of the one who's not talking. In this scene, it's so cramped in the car it's hard to see, but what you can see is heart-rending. Aziraphale is so scared. Like, on the verge of a panic attack scared. He's breathing so heavily he's almost panting, his mouth slightly open, his eyes are darting all around while Crowley's are fixed on the thermos. The anxiety is palpable.
Crowley. Crowley starts this scene annoyed, "What are you doing here?" He already knows, I guess, that Aziraphale has sussed his plan and is here to stop him. This is only the second time we see where Aziraphale seeks him out and not the other way around, and he's thrown and not exactly happy about it. I wonder if there was some unfruitful negotiation in those 26 years with Crowley trying to convince Az to help him again? And when Aziraphale actually gives him the thing he asked for 105 years ago, he has no idea how to respond. The only thing he can think of is to do something for Az, and the only thing he can think to do is to give him a ride somewhere; meanwhile, the only thing Aziraphale wants from him is to not go anywhere.
Tumblr media
Finally, I can't figure out Aziraphale's line, "I can't have you risking your life, not even for something dangerous." It seems redundant. Does he mean it's dangerous for him, Aziraphale, to give this to Crowley? Who knows.
Anyway, congratulations to this scene for ripping out so many hearts and solidifying our love for these two ineffable idiots.

psychoanalyzing Aziraphale and Crowley through the ages instead of doing my research project that's due next week. pt. 5: Knights of the Round Table / Wessex
Tumblr media
This interaction is kind of a drawn-out mirror of their very first interaction on the wall. Aziraphale has done something under his own volition, which he knows goes against what he's supposed to do. And then he backpedals to try to course-correct.
In Eden, he was grappling with giving away the sword. Here, in a damp field in Wessex, 500 years after hitting on Crowley in a pub in Rome, he is trying to stay on the straight and narrow (haha straight lol). He wanted to hang out with Crowley, and he sure as heck made that happen under his own volition and it definitely was not a Heaven-approved activity.
Now, when they meet, there's a familiarity. This is the first glimmer of their "old married couple" vibes. Who knows what happened at Petronius's place, or if they've had other dinners together since then (my guess would be yes) (except maybe not -- more on that later). But they clearly have some kind of stock of each other.
Tumblr media
This is when Crowley first suggests the Arrangement to Aziraphale. Crowley is no longer just teasing Az about being a questionable angel, he's trying to get something out of Aziraphale -- something that benefits him, yes, but also a step forward in their relationship. A more explicit acknowledgement of the reality of their roles, not just the company line.
Crowley isn't the grumpy emo teenager we found in the pub in Rome, but he's also not the carefree old-testament imp with the flowing locks anymore. He's settling into the personality we see in the modern day, the "Eh, fuck 'em, let's do it our way and just do the bare minimum to not get noticed," the forced casualness that he wraps himself in to protect himself from the sharp bitterness of the pain he sees God cause.
And Aziraphale is also settling into his modern personality as well. His guard is up. He's keeping his head down and doing his job, tromping around in the mud to foment peace for King Arthur because that's part of the Ineffable Plan, I guess, don't worry about it just get it done so I can go home to a jug of red and a nice illuminated manuscript in front of the fire.
He also has adopted his patented Aziraphale Radiant Smile, the Kill Them With My Polite Englishness Smile, and maybe that's part of his armor too. He knows he's harming humans, he knows he's working for Amazon Corporate, but he has bills to pay. But dammit if he isn't going to bring a little bit of sunshine and joy to the day of every last human he encounters along the way. Whether they like it or not.
Tumblr media
But... back to the question of whether they've hung out between Rome and now. The thing that trips me up is that Aziraphale deadnames Crowley. In Rome, he accidentally starts with Crawley, but he corrects himself immediately. Here, he just addresses him as Crawley, and Crowley has to correct him. So maybe they haven't run into each other since Rome. 500 years is a long time. It's feasible Az forgot. Or, he does it deliberately, to try and redraw the lines, go back to a version of their relationship before all this familiarity built up, a version of Aziraphale who knew his place and got on with it, and a version of Crowley who knew Aziraphale's place and teased him for it. Not this Crowley who suggests working together, who insinuates they have more in common with each other than with their head offices. Not this Crowley who knows him. Knows that the best way to get Aziraphale's cogs turning is to point out how uncomfortable the work is, how much more quickly he could get back to the fire and the wine and the book if he worked together with Crowley ...
Everything was different in Rome, and this meeting is Aziraphale going oh shit oh shit oh shit oh shit and running in the opposite direction, for the first time, but not the last.
(I think they both have their own versions of this pattern, of getting a little closer, a little more vulnerable, and then overcorrecting to reinforce their defenses against that vulnerability. More posts to come!)
Final note: this is the only time they meet by accident. I'm not sure what that signifies, but Douglas MacKinnon said, "Everything is meant," so it must mean something. 🤔
