1. This is a bit old fic. I remember in it Wangxian are living in a cottage now, and one day WWX finds LWJ vehemently chopping wood. Turns out LWJ is punishing himself because he missed few days of “everyday” therefore he thinks he failed WWX. Do you remember what that fic was? Heh #3 on post

2. Could you please help me find a fic? The main point was that Lan Wangji was injured in the Gusu massacre and during the turtle cave scene Wuxian gives Wangji his core. The story is canon compliant otherwise, but after Wuxian’s death Wangji learns to play the dizi and he always keeps Chenqing in his belt. I think it was a long fic (50,000+ words) and could have sworn I read it on ao3… but I can’t find it again! Help!! #12 on post

3. Looking for a fic. Wei Wuxian goes on tour or something similar, and the tabloids post something about him cheating even though he didn’t. He’s dating Lan Wangji and even tho he knows he didn’t cheat he can’t handle the stress of having a boyfriend on tour/ far away. Lan zhan decides that he does not want to live eternaly and he ages with wei ying. Lan zhan is sharing his spiritual energy with wei ying and this way he ie sustaining the both of them until he finally runs out of it and one day they lay in bed and they die together in the jingshi. 12. For your next fic finder… I’ve suddenly remembered this elusive fic. I’m pretty sure it was a canon era BDSM AU (in that people have inherent dom/sub dynamics), and WWX was a sub that had been raised/socialized as a dom by the Jiang sect. The fic was set during the CR study arc, and IIRC something happened in the library that caused WWX to drop hard, revealing the truth to everybody. It’s not The Hilt Lies Well In Hand by HeavenlySkyfarer, or A Gesture of Companionship by Khashana. Help? #13 of post

A) During the first siege Wei Ying uses the Soul Summoning Ritual to bring back Jiang Yanli’s soul in his body and the Yanli runs to Jiang Cheng and says something like “A-Cheng it’s me.”. B) During the Wen Settlement days one morning Wen Qing walks into Wei Ying’s cave and finds him dead on his bed. I think he died due to an illness and Wen Qing wasn’t suprised to find him dead. - I think it’s something about time travel fix it

-The Jiang Family + Wei Wuxian talking about Jiang Cheng and Jin Ling’s weird naming of dogs and then they said something about Sect Leader Jiang naming the Sword suibian. Someone in the group said it runs in the family to which Jiang Cheng refuted it by saying his name and Yanli’s name were good names. Madam Yu just laughed and said that it was her who named them and not Jiang Fengmian.

The new universes’ WWX was not friends with LWJ. LWJ’s leg was still broken after the Wen Indoctrination and never healed, so LWJ is wheelchair bound (pushed by Jingyi). WWX builds up a friendship with LWJ but I think in the end he goes back to his own universe. This one sounds like that one fic where the theme was something like ‘be careful what you wish for’, iirc WWX wanted to see either his parents or JYL alive 🤔 ~Mod L

48. I need help on finding a fic. It’s about how wei wuxian created his own sect from a past syndicate movements, he transformed it into a merchant/shops/silk road or something similar. He never went with the jiangs or any sects. When he was still on the streets he got betrayed by an “esteemed” cultivator because of false accusations (vendor told the cultivator that he caught wei wuxian stealing from him, but in actuality wei wuxian was at the wrong place at the wrong time), it was another kid that stole a toy from a merchant, if I’m not wrong. He was also a part of an illegal underground fights where he “won the bet” against the strongest fighter. He’s also claimed by wen qing to be the killer of a murder because the only one who knows around needles is herself, and she met wei wuxian and taught him the arts of needles. There’s also a wei wuxian - xue yang connection by said syndicate because the chang sect was a part of it. #9 of post

Your writing is so beautiful! Your characterizations of Wylan and Jesper are incredible in your oneshots and especially in Everyday, Just a Little or a Little Bit. Wesper and the crows literally got me through the last year and are still my main source of serotonin atm so I promise I’m not even close to done writing about them yet!

I also think about Everyday… every day lol, I really do. I have a handful of offshoots and bonus scenes from that fic I still want to write/finish (Jesper’s pov of a few moments, his talk with Nina after Wylan leaves in ch3, so much with the bookseller from ch1 etc), along with a few wips and a giant list of ideas I haven’t even started.

Currently I’m working on my gift for an exchange we have going over on the @i-can-read-to-him server (which is becoming both incredibly stressful but also so so exciting with every scene I write) I wish I could talk about it but it’s a surprise™️ for the moment. It will hopefully be ready to start posting next week!

Until then, here's a snippet from one of the bonus scenes in Everyday. It's from the part in ch2 where Jesper comes back to the Slat after being jumped by debt collectors. (Fun fact: the original scene was supposed to be this version, but when I actually went to write it it was feeling too clunky with the rest of the chapter, so I changed it to the posted version)

Wylan wakes up alone one morning.

He knows, immediately, that something is wrong. The only disturbance of the covers has been made by himself; the other side of the bed is untouched, except for where his hand had landed on Jesper's pillow during the night. The rest is left unruffled and empty.

He hadn’t come back. Jesper had been sent on a job the night before that hadn’t needed a demo man. Wylan told him he’d wait up, and Jesper told him he didn’t need to. Wylan had planned to wait up anyway.

Apparently, it hadn’t worked. Wylan does not remember falling asleep, and yet it’s undeniably morning now. Still early enough that the sun isn’t quite peeking through the curtains, but he can tell it will soon.

He tries not to get worked up. He gets worked up anyway. No matter how much he tries to rationalise it, there is a deep pit growing in his stomach, convincing him that something is very wrong. He gets out of bed and leaves the room. He doesn’t bother with boots, just creeps down the hall in his socks. It doesn’t take long to hear voices. They filter out from Kaz’s office, freezing Wylan in place. “You still might need a medik,” he hears—Nina’s voice. She sounds tired. “How many times do I have to tell you two I wasn’t trained for proper healing?”

“You're doing fine.” Jesper. Jesper’s voice. He sounds… dim is the only way Wylan can think to describe it. Tinny. Like the rich, mellow timbre of his words have been syphoned off into something thinner. He coughs wetly. “Gold stars all around Neens, really.”

“I’m not above knocking you out, you know,” Nina says, but even without being in the room he can tell there’s no real threat in it. It’s soft, fond, and concerned.

Wylan’s heart feels like it’s detached from his chest. Like it’s somewhere else entirely, and wherever that is, someones squeezing it very tightly. He walks closer, almost hovering outside the threshold. He places a hand on the knob.

It’s been a very long time since Wylan has felt out of place with the Crows, but as he opens the office door, he cannot help but feel—not unwelcome, but uninvited, and left out of the loop.

Unnecessary, his mind supplies, and he tries very, very hard not to give it a chance to amend, worthless.

He balls up the cuffs of his shirt—it’s one of Jesper’s, though Wylan can’t remember when he’d taken it up as his own. Long enough that it doesn’t smell like Jesper anymore, just Wylan, which is a tragedy—and casts a look around the room, feeling awkward and out of place and comparatively underdressed in only his sleep clothes and socks.

Kaz looks as he always does, except worse. His hair is falling uncharacteristically messy over his face. He turns sharply from where he’d been facing the window when Wylan enters, eyes even darker than usual.

Nina looks worried, a deep weighty frown on her face as her hands press against Jesper’s abdomen.

And Jesper looks—

“What happened?” Wylan balks. Everyone is staring at him now, and Wylan hates it, hates this, but it all pales in comparison to the awful feeling tearing itself through his chest at the sight of Jesper, Jesper’s face—

“Jes—” Wylan’s voice breaks.

“I’m fine,” Jesper assures quickly. Nina scoffs. She takes her hands away from Jesper’s stomach to cross them over her chest. “I’ll be fine. I’ll be fine!”

“You’ll be fine when I say you’ll be fine,” Nina mutters.

Jesper tries to smile at Wylan, tries to give him a surreptitious thumbs up with the hand farthest from Nina, tries to wink of all things. It doesn’t make Wylan feel any better. It also looks like it hurts, because both Jesper’s eyes are puffy and red, and the side of his face sports an angry mark that’s still bleeding sluggishly from his eyebrow. His jaw looks sort of swollen too, and he grimaces at his own smile, so it must hurt.

Looking at it makes Wylan want to cry, so instead he looks at Kaz.

“What happened?” he asks again, very quietly.

“Debt collectors. And an idiot.”

“Kaz!” Jesper protests. Kaz shoots him a glare that pierces slightly duller than usual, which makes Wylan worry even more. “It’s not as bad as it looks.” Jesper tries again.

Wylan doesn’t respond. He keeps looking at Kaz.

Kaz sighs. He sweeps his hair back in its usual style and pushes up from the window. “He’ll be fine. It’s not good, but nothing with debt collectors ever is. I’m working on it.”

So I’m a HUGE fan of your writing it’s ✨everything✨. I was wondering if you had any tips for new fic writers?

I’m just starting out (working on my very first fic) and I know my writing isn’t great but hey everyone has to start somewhere. So I was wondering if you any advice to improve one’s writing.

It’s a bit terrifying because I know my writing isn’t as good as it’s going to be as long as I keep working at it but part of me worries I’m going to make a idiot of myself.

Any tips/advice will be accept with immense gratitude and appreciation. 💖🥰

Oh I’m always very very bad at any sort of writing tips but I think the most important things are:

write a lot — like a lot a lot. It’s how you improve and also how you find your rhythm and style as a writer!

do warm-ups — 300-800 words of something else before you open your wip! Just like drawing, your brain needs to get focused and get in the mood for writing!! Warm ups can be anything—describe your favorite mug, describe how a character takes their coffee, write down how they would react if they won a lot of money, anything. It’s really really helpful getting the words flowing

fandom’s fandom - cannot stress this enough. when you’re writing fic, it’s really important that you’re writing how you view the characters, regardless of what anyone else is thinking or writing; sometimes a certain fanon or interpretation of a character gets very popular, but that doesn’t mean your interpretation isn’t valid or shouldn’t go in a fic. I want to read your take on the characters! I want to see what you like and the fun ideas you have!! Fandom is fandom, and fandom changes its mind a lot on what takes are most popular and what trope is having its Moment™️ but if you write what you like, you’re guaranteed to like it later when fandom has moved into obsessing over a different trope

fall in love with your writing - this is so hard because as the writer you see the typos and the sentences that feel too stilted and the actions that feel too rushed, but it’s so so so necessary. There is no way to keep writing fic if you don’t enjoy it for you! Fic writing is a celebration of your love for your fandom and you should love your love!! It’s the best and only way I know to keep my love going at least

give your characters tattoos - self explanatory. not optional.

Normally, I'd do this in a couple days, but we're close enough for government work (and I'm on a deliberate break anyhow, so nothing new is being posted). Normally this would also be a tag game, but I haven't seen it floating around yet, so...

Words posted: 241,283 . This total has had subtracted from it the amount that already existed for the fic that carried over from last year (which was WG, of course). So this is actually what I posted this year.

Additional Words Written: ~166K. I have several WIP's going on in the background. One of which is finished and will begin posting after New Year's. Another of which is about halfway done. The rest are...procrastination projects/getting the wiggles out. They may never see the light of day. But they count as writing, so they are included.

Grand total of words: 407, 283 (goodness gracious)

Works: 12, 11 of which were new.

Highest Kudos: Into the Current, at 271 (just like last year, I'm not counting WG since it wasn't new). The Iron Bull/OFC, rated E, 79K words, complete.

New Things I Tried: I wrote a trio of fics for True Blood/Southern Vampire Mysteries this year. The WIP that's finished and waiting for the new year is a continuation of this series.

I also posted a ficlet I'd originally posted here on tumblr for archiving purposes. Some Years Into the Future...

Fic I Spent the Most Time On: Driftwood, my Bullmance series. Writing ItC itself wasn't particularly long, about two months, but T3, the next fic, is still being written. At first it was all going to be one long fic, but then I decided I've had enough of epics (meaning any work significantly over 100K words), and split it into parts.

Fic I Spent the Least Time On: The Mighty Fall. I have finally gotten to use the tag 'I wrote this instead of sleeping'. 🤣

Favorite Thing I Wrote: Usually, I have trouble with this category. I'm poly, you know. But this year, I actually DO have a fave. Okay...I have two.

How Deep the Bullet Lies - a gift for @rosella-writes, for the Solas Lovers Exchange. Solas/Cassandra Pentaghast with a whumpy open ending. Rated M, 4200 words.

More Than Mere Stone - a gift for my beloved @ir0n-angel in the same exchange. Solas/F!Trevelyan, pure fluff. Rated G, 1500 words.

Favorite Thing I Read: In Twain, by CatC. It's everything I wanted in a 'background character gets caught up in events' fic. With a sizzlingly hot Bullmance and So Much Cole. I think I've read it three or four times already. At least. If you need something comforting and wonderful, I cannot recommend it enough. It's simply delightful, and so is the author. Rated E, 172K words, WIP.

Something I Finished: I did it, at long last. I finished What a Wicked Game to Play. It was the focus of NaNo (and took literally three days once I put my mind to it, hence much of the other writing I did that hasn't been published). It feels really good to have my beloved Behemoth marked with a green checkmark. The story itself isn't finished, and I'll eventually write more for Imogen and Co., but for now, it is Done.

Writing Goals for 2024 – Keep on keeping on. I want to finish T3, so I can start posting it. I want to finish a couple other things from the WIP list. There will of course be a new Fluffuary prompt list. Biggest goal, however, is simply not to burn myself out. I've started waiting to publish until a fic is finished, which has done wonders for my stress levels. No more posting gaps on an in-progress fic.

Allow me to Gush about some things I wrote this year.

Out of the Dark - Lark Cadash was once going to have an epic fic to her name. But I'm Tired, and frankly, I'm bored with rewriting the events of DA:I over and over again. So I've turned her into a series, where I can just put up oneshots and short chaptered things in no particular order that add up to one big story. This is one of them. Post-canon, Lark goes into the Deep Roads to find the answer to a riddle that's bugged her for her entire life. She gets more than she asked for, with a side serving of sad Solas. I've had many of the headcannons included in it for a long time, with no home. Now, they're out there in the world. Rated G, 4800 words.

What Lies Beneath - my actual giftfic for the Solas Lovers Exchange. I had such fun writing this, and had ideas for it as soon as I received the assignment. I got to set something in the Hissing Waste, which is one of my favorite places in the game, as well as write a polyship for my two favorite romances. F!Cadash/Solas/Iron Bull, rated T, 3400 words.

Maker Damned Fools - back in 2020, I wrote a Varric/Hawke short little thing for the first Fluffuary. I always wanted to go back and expand it into a fuller story. Add it to the pile of Things I Finished This Year. From their meeting to post-canon. Rated E, 32K words.

What a Wicked Game to Play - *deep satisfied sigh* It took two years and ten months to complete, with near constant weekly updates. It's 411K words by itself (not counting the rest of the series). It contains about 350 embedded images of either screenshots or fanart. It is both the highest hit (over 90K) and highest kudo'd (1535) work on my archive. Affectionately known as 'the Behemoth', extensively written with my signature yeeting of canon. Imogen McLean, MGIT, Inquisitor, beloved of Fen'Harel. I am stupendously proud of this work, but I am also incredibly happy it's done. I set out to write an epic, and I damn well succeeded. Rated E.

I got into writing ff as a young child! My favourite TV show at the time had a canon pairing that I absolutely loved, and before I knew it, I was writing fanfiction for them.

🕯️ ⇢ on a scale from 1 to 10, how much do you enjoy editing? why is that?

I love editing! Less so for my own work (because then I get sucked into the lovely hole of rewriting sentences and paragraphs), but I love editing for my partner. It makes me feel accomplished, knowing that I put my all into a piece of work (when I edit my own stuff), and bonus: a snippet into WIPs before they're published! ;)

🥤 ⇢ recommend an author or fanfic you love

I absolutely love @rafiel_ahi (ao3) for her JJ/Emily (Criminal Minds) work. She has such an attention to detail and her imagery that she manages to capture never ceases to amaze me. Other authors that I can't recommend enough are @jazzfordshire (Tumblr/Ao3) for their Supercorp (Supergirl) fics, and last but not least, @englishstrawbie for their Maya/Carina (Station 19) fics. Fun fact, yours (@jmflowers) was the very first work on Ao3 that I read for the Marina pairing, and I absolutely fell in love!

I believe there's a rabbit on the moon! (Not really, haha, obvs). Instead of the traditional "man on the moon" trope, I was told as a young child that there was a rabbit on the moon, and when it's a full moon, I like to see that I can see the outline of his ears. He is apparently pounding some fermented beans up there.

I wholeheartedly believe that Maya is a bottom in their relationship, both in the bedroom and out of the bedroom ;)

🪐 ⇢ name three good things going on in your life right now

I have a lovely, incredible partner who supports me in all that I do.

I'm so!close! to getting my postgrad degree! (Although this isn't a "good" thing right now because it's making me so stressed, haha! But I am so grateful that I have the opportunity to keep studying).

I have lovely pets that always make me laugh, no matter how stressed I am (Clementine, Lemon, Fig, and Peach, my ratties, and my little doggie who's been with me since I too was a smol bean).

🔪 ⇢ what's the weirdest topic you researched for a writing project?

Definitely dirty-talk in Italian, haha! Perks of being a smut writer *hides*

🏜️ ⇢ what's your favourite type of comment to receive on your work?

That I've captured the characters as they are in canon! Something about that compliment makes me so giddy and excited. I appreciate all comments so much through.

🦴 ⇢ is there a piece of media that inspires your writing?

Sometimes I hear spicy-ish songs that remind me of Marina, or even love/heartbreak songs that make me internally SOB with the thought of what they went through during Maya's infidelity.

It's a combination of letters and numbers that are of personal importance to me! :)

🧩 ⇢ what will make you click away from a fanfiction immediately?

Work that doesn't have the appropriate grammar, or poor spacing. Each character talking starts on a new line! If it's just a whole paragraph of multiple dialogues, my brain cannot handle it and I click away :(

Writing Related Stuff To Do When You're Not Writing

Whether it's procrastination, writer's block, not having enough time, or whatever, I'm sure we've all had that mood where we wanted to work on our WIP but didn't want to/couldn't write. This tends to make writing feel more like a chore when it should be fun. So, here's some stuff to do in the meantime.

- Outline! I consider this as sorta-writing, since you're establishing the "bones" of your story without writing in your draft. You don't have to worry about prose or dialogue this way, you can just write "They went here. They did this." and it would still work

- To Pinterest we go. Make boards for your WIP, your characters, search for faceclaims. Thoroughly indulge yourself in the Vibes™

- Make fanfiction of your own work. Alternate universes, shameless fluff, whump, backstory, anything, really. This is technically still writing, but you're not writing in your main document. You still get to explore your story with less pressure.

- Back to things that don't require writing, try to make playlists. @music-recs-for-writers is a whole blog dedicated to what it says on the title, and I've found some gems that way (everyone say thank you @/music-recs-for-writers).

- Interact with fellow writers! It shouldn't be a surprise how helpful and refreshing it is to talk with a fellow writer, see their excitement for their own work, and to have someone take interest in your work. Ramble to each other in messages, participate in ask games, etc.

- Read. I cannot stress this enough, read. This is kind of related to interacting with fellow writers, but this is more like interacting with the works of fellow writers. Whether seeing a published book brings you hope that your own book can be published, or you find dissecting a book through a writer's lens a fun activity (try it, it's actually fun lol), reading helps your writing.

- Interact with your source of inspiration. Maybe you're a fic writer (I love you guys). Consume stuff from the piece of media you're writing for, remind yourself why you're doing this in the first place!

- Draw (if you can) (or maybe if you can't. Give it a try lol). Make concept art for your OCs, their clothing, hair, make them look like they're in a movie poster, draw settings in your WIP, all that stuff :D

- Make a WIP journal. I just started mine and it's so fun. Write about your progress, maybe make some illustrations, put in your favorite pieces of dialogue, and anything you can think of! It's yours.

WIP: Project Rosary

Hello and welcome back to a new writing log.

I am slowly coming near the halfway mark in my Project Rosary Part 1. Even though life is stressful right now (exam season started in Germany two weeks ago), I am fairly consistent in writing every morning before studying.

Creating stories in these times is crucial for me. I immediately feel stressed, when I cannot write (especially if people tell me to not write during the exam phase!). It is like my little escape from everyday work.

But to be honest with you, I am currently a bit unmotivated. Not only because stuff currently happens within my family, but also because everything seems to be quite exhausting. So, what’s been new these days, is that I am trying to get anything down. A new Tumblr post, stuff for my project, new stuff… All of that.

Some of you have already seen that I came up with a new kinda fantasy story, that has no particular meaning, whatsoever.

It doesn’t have a name, beside the codename for Tumblr, so I can tag it: Project Unnamed. It is probably the shittiest story I have ever written. Not only because it is mainly pure Romantasy, which I normally don’t write, but also the fact, that I am writing some elven romance thing while complaining about how many elven or fae romance is out there? It’s kinda ironic.

To give you a little insight in the quick story (including some fancy banners I made for this):

It is about a somehow royal girl (I haven’t decided on that just yet), who lives in a world where magic is banned and seen as a wicked thing. One day, she gets in danger in the nearby woods, where a mysterious man saves her. Fascinated by his ethereal presence, she decides to find him again (which obviously works), where she finds out that he is able to control magic. He seems to come and go like a spirit and so she calls him the white spirit, also because he doesn’t tell her anything about him, besides the facts, that are obvious to her. She gets him to teach her about magic and soon enough, she finds out, that she can use the forbidden force too. They kinda have a secret relationship going on (with probably many red flags - I don’t know if he is a good or a bad guy). The drama comes from the secret relationship and when people find out about the elf in the forest.

I already know that this is going to be bad. I have no intention on publishing it. Maybe one day on Wattpad or as snippets here on Tumblr, but this is probably the most cliché Romantasy story you can come across. Even though I kinda like the characters…

But this is never going to any publisher in this world. It’s to bad for that.

If you are lucky enough to grasp an update on this story in form of a writing log, you are probably blessed. Project Unnamed is not even considered an active WIP.

But back to the original project, of which I am very proud of.

Project Rosary is still right before the half-time of the book, but I only have to finish the current scene and I am done. I like the pace in which things are falling together. Also, because I have the time to come up with solutions to plot holes in the storyline.

Now, as I am slowly coming to the end of one book of the series, I ask myself more, if I should wait until all seven books are done and then publish the first one. If people read the current book first, they will be (a little bit) spoilered for the rest. But if I publish the rest first, they get spoilered for the current book. It’s a bit of a challenge here, since everything connects to each other.

Luckily, I have until the final draft is done, to decide wether or not I publish now or later.

I planned for this be a drawn thing (and still do. Filthy wip in keep reading). But it's taken longer than expected and I have no idea how I'm gonna get the text down or whatever. Keep reading to save screen space.

Species: Armarouge (premature evolution)

Age: 4-5 years old / juvenile.

DOB: 2019-2020. Yet to be determined.

Siblings: A young Ceruledge adopted him (he adores her).

Diet: Omnivore.

Nickname: None was supplied by former trainer.

------------------------------------------------------------

Observations:

A surrender to us by his former trainer. His birthplace was suspected to be a mill. Records show he was in fact a wild Pokémon caught in the Paldea region. The date recorded was just a few days after a record breaking storm had struck Paldea. An examination showed he was missing his pauldrons but was otherwise healthy. Speculation was he was too young to evolve but others noted how the infant Ceruledge had hers. When asked about it he shys away. This has lead to staff thinking they were destroyed in an Pokémon battle the young Armarouge wasn't prepared for (some staff hope that's the case). He is a friendly little Pokemon. He even let me pet him despite us having only just met on the day of his wellbeing being assigned to me. He even tries to pet myself and others back.

Sociable as he is, I've found him finding somewhere quiet to sit when his social battery is low. When it's nearly spent is when he starts to show signs of agitation. Even his sister Ceruledge will be given a warning, not that she understands he wants to be alone given she's a baby. Thankfully even when in this state he's gentle. Just picking her up and moving her out of the area rather than snapping at her. Thankfully this is a very rare occurrence and even then he usually has enough social battery for the infant Ceruledge.

Additional note: though his pokeball clearly upsets him he refuses to let go of it. Staff moved it when cleaning one day and he was distraught when he couldn't find it. That said he equally refuses to go inside said pokeball.

With a friendly disposition, he has little trouble making friends with others Pokémon and human alike, much like his sister. If he finds any food such as fruit or berries, he'll share them. Even his favourites! You could just go up to him and ask and he'll happily give you his meal! One of his favourite meals is a BLT sandwich.

When he's settled down or is comfortable in your company, you may find him napping somewhere. If you have a lit fireplace odds are he's lying in front of it getting a warm. But he will move from the fireplace if asked (even if the other just wanted his spot) and he'll find somewhere else that's cosy.

Known moves:

Although he does as asked such as set the table, go and play, keep still for the nurse at the pokemon centre and so on, he refuses to perform any attacks and asking him to do any clearly stresses and upsets him. He wants to do as asked but can't or rather won't for some reason. It's not me lacking badges. I suspect he's still loyal towards his former trainer and that's the cause of the conflict.

It is likely he knows moves you'd expect from a Charcadet. Ember, Astonish, Clear smog etc. there was speculation he may even know Amor cannon but cannot perform the technique due to lacking his pauldrons.

I'm gonna have to see if there's are any smithies who may be able to help make the young Pokemon knight a pair.

[PEBBLYSAND'S BIZARRELY ECLECTIC FIC REC LIST] - SUMMER 2022 EDITION

to motivate myself to read more fic, i've decided to provide you with quarterly (i love that word, "quarterly", it makes it sound fancy), fic rec lists. i think: i perhaps read weird shit, but i assure you i read good shit. so, without further ado, here are seven fics i enjoyed this summer, in the order in which i read them haha.

the wandsmith's apprentice by @marycontraire (dean/seamus ; unrated ; 19,049 words; wip multichap)

this fic was recommended to me by multiple people after i wrote the fault and got super excited about deamus, and i finally had time to give it a go in early june. it's a post-war story (and, we all know i love post-war) told from dean's pov, the premise being that dean takes on an apprenticeship with ollivander and, i suppose, life ensues. i cannot stress enough how much i truly adore this work. first of all, the writing is stellar. i totally fell in love with dean's characterisation in this, which is so on point - i love the world the author has built around his family, his sisters, his parents, their lives, ect. so many OCs that feel real. the fic also really explores what life looks like for muggleborns, existing with a foot in both worlds, especially after the war, and i found that terribly interesting. the worldbuilding around wandmaking is also frankly mindblowing and the amount of detail this author has put into the creating and crafting of wands, as well as ollivander, his mind, his work, his shop, etc. is truly next level. the deamus is also the loveliest. i love seamus in this. i was in absolute awe. i have yet to read the rest of marycontraire's work (i understand there's a lot of deamus to be excited about!) but this was truly fantastic and i can't wait for the next installment.

the moon hung proud and bright (ron/hermione? ish? ; gen ; 1,437 words ; one shot)

idk, man. this fic is one of the ones that just now lives in my head rent-free. probably my fave i read this summer. it is sad. like, real sad, but in a sort of it-is-what-it-is, realistic and understated way. it's been orphaned but i must give huge kudos to this author for their ability to tear my heart out with less than 1,500 words. it explores harry's reaction to ron and hermione getting married, in an AU post-war world where he and ginny broke up. the summary reads:

“We’re getting married,” says Ron, and Harry just blinks.

Then he says, “Oh”.

(sad post-Hallows, trio-fracturing fic that no one asked for)

i just. it's one of those fics where i don't know what to say, but i can't stop thinking about it. just read it and you'll understand.

what happens when people open their hearts? by secondstarontheleft (harry/ginny ; t ; 3,173 words ; one-shot)

this is a harry-goes-to-therapy fic, and i usually tend to steer away from those because they're often just retellings of the books, exploring things that we already know, and personally bore me. also, i don't actually think therapy is for everyone, and i'm not sure harry would be a good candidate. but this has managed to change my mind a little. the writing is absolutely amazing, and i like that it wasn't about what harry says in therapy, but about the decision of going and opening up. i find that reflection very interesting, and the characterisation is spot on. i also really loved ginny in this. it truly felt like a novel take on something that's been written a million times before, and that's a super hard thing to achieve. i truly enjoyed this, and actually wish there was more of it!

in virtute et tutela by @incalculablepower (gen ; t ; 2,308 words ; one-shot)

this is a story about crookshanks. yes, i know it's a cat. this house is allergic to cats, but still love them very much. i fucking love this cat. i told you this list was bizarrely eclectic: this is one of those weird ones. but, please trust me on this, you won't be disappointed.

it is absolutely amazing. the writing is brilliant, and i got so invested in crookshanks' life i swear to god. there are so many layers to this story, i loved all of the owners and their narratives pre-hermione, and then absolutely adored the hermione-crookshanks relationship, striking just the right emotions for me. also the ending, and hermione's panic thinking crookshanks had forgotten her (the unspoken parallel with her parents 🥺 ; ron's contrasting optimism) was incredible. i just adored this so much. an absolute fave!

thirty-five owls by letterblade (dumbledore/grindelwald ; m ; 11,284 words ; one-shot)

this has a kudo count in the thousands so i suppose it's rather famous in its niche, but i'd never read it before, so i'll rec it regardless. i began reading this one night and then was up until three in the morning finishing it. it's a fic made up entirely of correspondence between dumbledore and grindelwald stretching from after the duel and his arrest to albus's death. it's ... interesting. i'm not sure how to describe this fic but it really grabbed me, despite it being about a ship i'd never really cared about before. as someone who's had to write letters between two people in the past, i know how hard it is to write two distinct first-person narratives while making sure that each character keeps their specific "voice", and this fic does that incredibly well. i loved the rockiness of this relationship, the way they both push and pull and never really seem to meet in the middle. it's a fascinating take and i genuinely could not put it down.

september 21, 1997 by lunalive (gen ; t ; 1,396 words ; one-shot)

okay, this is another one of those weird ones where you'll just have to trust me, lol. i literally found this off the front page of AO3, which doesn't happen often, and adored it. it centres on the story of a muggleborn OC who gets arrested by death eaters at the start of the war. one of the tags is "the banality of evil," which i think describes the point that this fic is trying to make very well. It's just a really interesting story about what the war might have looked like to the "average" muggleborn in early 1997. I loved this.

little sugar men by dopeythedwarf (harry/ginny; gen ; 1,651 words ; one-shot)

the. writing. in. this. i mean, i could tell you it's a lovely, bittersweet post-war piece about harry and ginny, involving broomsticks and broken hearts and grief and incredible subtlety but really: The Writing In This. Like:

Stutters and halts. Stutters and halts. The story of the two of them. And all the forgetting too, she thought tiredly. Suddenly, the gravity is too much. She needs to leave. Now. The exhaustion threatens to consume her with every lick of the grass on her ankles. She can’t be here. Can’t stay still lest she never moves again.

i've not stopped thinking about this paragraph since i read it. i'm in awe. this is so my vibe i could cry. loooooved this.

People who still leave comments on Cheer Up Buttercup, I love you all and your reviews always seem to come in when I’m having a bad week. I honestly can’t begin to describe how much it means to me that people reread and still love that fic. It makes me feel so proud of it.

I have something around or possibly over twenty-eight DGHDA wips. I haven’t been able to write for a long time, and I went through a period where DGHDA in particular was weirdly triggering to engage in for ptsd reasons (don’t worry, there's no fandom drama or anything, I just had a traumatic event happen irl and my confused brain put the trauma in DGHDA). The fic I want to finish most though is a Farah introspec fic I wrote for a Big Bang partnered with Juniper, who was extremely understanding about me having a mental breakdown* and not finishing it. Every time I try to go back to it I feel paralysed by my own promise that it would be the first fic I published once I felt able to write again.

I’ve come to the conclusion that this is dumb. In June I was diagnosed with ADHD. Prior to that, if someone with ADHD told me, “Oh, I have this thing I feel stuck on, pathologically unable to finish; for a long time I was unable to look at it, and now I feel crushed by the weight of my own lack of action and the responsibility and the imagined failure I have projected onto myself, but I told myself I’m not going to do anything easy before I finish this incredibly difficult task,”

I would have said to them, “I’m sorry, but sounds insane. You have ADHD. I’m not a doctor, but from what I understand you don’t naturally produce enough dopamine to ram your head repeatedly into a wall of things that sound like the opposite of dopamine. You’ve set up a system wherein you have one very challenging objective, and you cannot engage in any of the behaviours that would make that objective easier for you until you finish that objective. This is not intelligent game design, and frankly it shows a total lack of kindness towards yourself. It is clearly not working. Try something else.”

It is very difficult to accept that what I would say to someone else is also what I deserve to hear and what is true for me. But every other month I still get comments from people from somewhere across the globe who read something I wrote and felt moved by it. And I think it's worth noting – it's vital for me to note to myself – that having the kind of brain I have does come with other skills.

When I wrote Cheer Up Buttercup I didn’t go into it with a grand plan, let alone conceptualise it as anything more moving or deep than “AU where everything is the same but Dirk works at Lush lol”. I wrote that first chapter fully expecting it to border on crackfic. I think to anyone reading it's obvious that it starts off matching the beats of a standard low-stakes shippy fluff fic. I got a lot of reviews that said things to the effect of "I thought this was going to be a dumb bath bomb store AU, then it got serious, what the fuck" and, honestly, that happened to me too as its writer. I followed that vein of joy of was something fluffy and silly and camp until I unexpectedly struck something more introspective that touched on heavier subject material.

And I have to stress, I don't mean that as "it started as cheap and stupid and then became a more worthwhile and meaningful fic", because the thing I love most about Cheer Up Buttercup is how it is both stupid and meaningful. It's fluffy and silly and camp, traits which are not easy or meaningless things to write, and it draws on very personal experiences, which can be exhausting to read. I still treasure reviews which say that the fluff made the serious less confronting and more accessible, that they didn't expect a Ted talk on mental health and cognitive behaviour patterns in the middle of their gay slowburn bath store AU but it had made them want to change the way they lived their life every day.

Since being diagnosed with ADHD I have suddenly had something to blame for traits I have that have been difficult to bear or highly inconvenient my whole life. I have had many days where I've broken down crying and said that I wished I didn't have ADHD and I could just Do Stuff Normally, With Planning And No Time Blindess. But Cheer Up Buttercup wasn't planned. It was entirely organic. I only sketched out the barest of plot outlines, which quickly spiralled into something completely different while I was writing the chapter where Todd decides to turn his life around. And I don't think I could have written it if I didn't have ADHD.

(I've also had multiple reviewers tell me that they love the way I write Dirk, particularly the neurodiverse aspects of his character. I write Dirk's neurodivergent expression partially based on my own feelings and experiences, and I always knew I had autism while writing Dirk, so I tagged "autistic Dirk" often. Being told that my Dirk seemed very ADHD was one of the first things that made me go, huh?? hmmm. uh-oh. nahhhh.)

I realise that I may sound here like I have a hugely inflated sense of self-importance and like I think my bath bomb store AU is a culturally relevant text soon to be studied in high schools across the nation. I promise I have no such illusions, it's one fic for a relatively small fandom, posted when the fandom was already losing traction and when hope of any further content was very slim. But I can't talk about that fic self-deprecatingly, I refuse to talk about it with anything other than affection and sincerity because it means a lot to me for many reasons, and chief among them is how much it means to other people.

I've had so many people leave comments or message me telling me that reading that fic made them want to change their life, or that they've reread it more than once and each time it motivates them to care for themselves. To me it doesn't matter if they're as successful as Todd is, or if the change is permanent, or even particularly long – and I definitely don't take credit for work that, ultimately, they and/or their loved ones do. I also know that I'm far from the only fic writer who's gotten reviews like that. But even then and either way, the value conferred onto that 100k ship fic by even one person telling me it has made them care about themself, even for just a moment, feels so immense to me that I can't picture the scope of it in my mind's eye.

By extension I feel a value has been conferred onto me, and my efforts, and my thoughts and feelings. And my brain, and the way it works. Because all of those things were put whole-heartedly into that fic. Again, I don't mean this in the sense of ego or importance but in the sense that it feels like being given a gift which in itself is the awareness of having a gift. Having it in the sense of being given it by others, having it in the sense of being born with it, having it in the sense that I want to give it to another person. It expands endlessly onto itself, precious and beautiful and startling. And a gift is something to be grateful for.

So, yes, alright, I may have not planned this post out either at all, as I very clearly start off saying that I can't describe how the reviews make me feel, then go on to try to describe how the reviews make me feel. And yes, this post may in fact have just been prompted by someone commenting on Cheer Up Buttercup and reminding me that I've written something worth rereading, and I likely would not have written this post this way if I knew how to Do Stuff Normal With Planning And No Time Blindness. But, thankfully, I have ADHD, so I just spent some uncertain amount of time realising that it's dumb that I'm imposing Do Stuff Normal People Rules on me, when I'm a Do Stuff At Total Random With Zero Planning But Golly Gosh, So Much Heart kind of person. And instead of waiting another two years for my brain to suddenly not have ADHD so I can finish my Farah fic and then, I don't know, become a bank clerk or something, I should just find a fic, any happy little fic, and write that. And trust that wherever it takes me will be more interesting than this.

And I miss the DGHDA universe. It is practically custom tailored for Do Stuff At Total Random With Zero Planning But Golly Gosh, So Much Heart kind of people. I miss finding a way to put a horse in a bathroom in every fic. I'll stop doing it once it stops being funny to me personally.

*As in I literally had a mental breakdown, that’s why I disappeared from the fandom. Not that I was a prominent person in any way I just mean that I used to interact with mutuals and friends a lot on Discord and Tumblr and then I just sort of disappeared.
