While Valentine's Day is hardly what one would call a religious holiday, it normally isn't celebrated by observant Jews because of its association with St. Valentine. But this morning a dear friend of mine, in sharing her gift to her husband, made reference to the lovely idea of "Valuetimes Day", which I found deeply touching and very relatable. So today, for what I am hereby declaring "Valuetimes Day", I'm sharing a book about exactly that: remembering to value and appreciate each other, PARTICULARLY those of us who seem a bit prickly, hard-shelled, or otherwise not obviously squishy and adorable. "The Hug" (2019) by Eoin McLaughlin and one of my most favourite illustrators, the lovely Polly Dunbar, is a double-sided book about two animals - a hedgehog and a tortoise - each of whom really needs a friendly hug. But all of their friends, upon being asked, seem to have some rather convenient and obvious (and more than a bit hurtful) excuses not to embrace them. It's a beautiful bit of luck, then, when they encounter each other ... On this "Valuetimes Day" let's try to remember kindness, then, and empathy.
