After years of service to Jacobs and Co., Lucy Carlyle decides it’s finally time to try her hand at freelancing in London before her Talent begins to fade for real. Following a terribly shitty case (graveyard, Shade, misplaced shovel) all she wants to do when she gets home is relax. However, the sink in her flat is leaking.
She could call a handyman. She really should. But she’s tired and that's all too much work. So, swiping through the latest Agent dating app, Fetch, she goes to her first match of the night (a certain Anthony Lockwood) and asks a simple question: “Do you happen to own a spanner?”

played the game ok boomer at my family party today, ended up explaining to a room of ~20 of my relatives what fanfiction is so they could understand the question, “in fanfiction, what does AU stand for?”. and then the card’s definition of “AU” was wrong so i also had to get into the concept of “canon”.
can u believe. in front of my whole family. a room full of people, aged 3 to 80. all staring at me intently as i explain the difference between an alternate universe and canon divergence. at one point my mom was like “daina i think we get it” and a cousin and two aunts were like “wait no we’re interested please continue” and i had to say to my own mother in front of god and my i am kenough sweatshirt “sorry but unlike you the rest of them DON’T have to listen to me talk about fanfiction on the regular”. my uncle is a retired judge. my one cousin worked for the federal government in a job that was so classified that for years he literally couldn’t legally tell us about ANYTHING he was working on. and today those men sat and patiently listened to me define “coffee shop AU”.
also, not one, not two, but THREE of the answers for the young folks, i knew solely because they were either plot points on stranger things or they were things i found out whilst reading stranger things fanfics. and then i was the only person in our age bracket (10 people, ranging from ages 9 to 42) that knew who anne rice was, and had to explain yet again that the reason i had this knowledge was because… fanfic.
it was surreal. also my aunt, aged 68, may or may not begin attempting to read fanfic now because, according to her, “there are so many stories where there are these small side characters and i’d just KILL to hear their backstory or like what was going through their minds during the main action!” i’m very happy for her. today was wild.
#d speaks#the things i knew because of stranger things: who ripped a bats head off on stage. what year the challenger exploded. the ghostbusters theme#in case ur curious the way the game worked is there was a set of questions for people born pre 1980 and a set of questions for people born#post 1980 and you split into the two teams and you take turns reading trivia questions to each other#the questions for the young ppl were things like above - who wrote interview w a vampire#what year did the challenger explode. who are the fab four. true or false elvis had a twin.#the questions for the old people were like: what does BAE stand for. in fanfiction what’s an AU. who won the first american idol.#it was a weird game but very educational#and funny to play with my little cousins because as i said anywhere from 2-4 of them are gen alpha depending on how u define it#so it was very interesting to see what sorts of things have been passed down culturally and what sorts of things stayed solely in their time#it was sort of reminiscent of are you smarter than a fifth grader in some ways#also no one asked but. the teams were:#old team: 4 solid boomers. 3 boomer/gen x cuspers. 3 gen x’ers.#young team: 2 xennial cusps. 2 millennials. 1 zillennial cusp. 1 zoomer. 2 zalpha cusp. 2 gen alphas#and then also our 3 year old cousin who technically is gen alpha but he was more moral support than anything you understand#though at one point he DID declare that he wanted to play - picked up a card and ‘read’:#‘santa comes he eats the milk and cookies. poop goes in the potty’ in the EXACT cadence of someone asking a trivia question lmfao#love that kid. he also told me a few knock knock jokes#mainly they were like. knock knock. who’s there. candy cane. candy cane who. candy cane on your head!!!!!!!!#a true comedic genius that boy

Ok so ik that fanfiction often requires characters to act ooc but I've seen multiple (tbf like 3) accidental pregnancy fics in the bear tag....and I just want to have my own 'he wouldn't fucking say that moment' and say that there is not a single universe in which Sydney Adamu would ever carry an unwanted pregnancy to term. If the concept of abortion didn't exist my girl would invent it to not have to do that shit lol.
#like carrying her flaky coworker/boss's baby as a starless 20 something chef living with her dad? no way could that ever be her#I don't even necessarily view syd as consciously childfree or anything#more like kids literally cannot and will not exist in her mental conception until she has achieved her chef goals and owns property#also like ik ppl generally portray syd as the somewhat normal one while carm is completely detached from normalcy#but I think he's wayyy better with kids than syd is like#his childhood was obviously terrible but he grew up with siblings and all the neighborhood kids like claire tiff and the faks#so I think he has some mental conception of standard kid things even if basic/dated like ketchup and ghostbusters#whereas syd just had her dad and maybe grandparents and probably felt the need to grow up super fast after her mom died#and was the precocious and responsible kid that teachers loved but the other kids thought was weird/annoying#and has no idea what is normal for any given age#like don't get me wrong carm is also bad at taking care of kids due to being seemingly the youngest in the entire family until eva#but I think he can tell the difference between like a 5 vs a 8 year old whereas syd cannot#the bear#m.text

avi jones is definitely a nervous laugher, so tbh i think the most likely thing to make them laugh Every single time is being put in awkward situation where they don't know what else to do. also, the more likely they are to be caught completely off-guard by a joke, the more likely they are to laugh at it- much more than if they were expecting it in any possible way
What’s their instinct in a fight / flight / freeze / fawn situation?
the boring but true answer is "it depends" - growing up, their immediate instinct was always Fawn, but that's a habit they've worked really hard to kill.
when attempting to confront a personal issue, they'll pretty much always default to Flight; they are Very good at running away from and ignoring the ugly truths they don't want to recognize.
however, when confronted with an Actual Life Threatening Emergency, such as An Actual Monster Is Attacking Them (monster of the week, my beloved ttrpg), all their usual anxiety and caution goes straight out the window and their default impulse is Fight. There is a danger, they are qualified to handle it, by god, they're gonna be Useful even if it kills them. they rush headfirst into danger and only panic later when they realize how stupid it was.

this is funny because nowadays at like, 26 years old, they're the most straitlaced put-together-acting nerd who never goes out and has only attended awkward office holiday parties, so most people would be surprised to hear about the very non-hypothetical drug possession charges they had back in college OOPS. if you asked them about it now they'd say something like haha well everyone got a little crazy in college but the real answer is they were like, having a devastating mental breakdown with zero actual coping mechanisms in place. its okay they got better (they don't think they need therapy but they desperately do)

ooh this is interesting. i think gentle love. they're bad at expressing themself directly but a little gesture means a lot to them- when they care they'll remember your coffee order, finish up a task for you without telling you because they know you're stressed, make sure to have the kind of snacks you like in stock. they've gotten enough shit over time under the guise of "tough love" that they shy away and would rather offer the "i'm here if you need me" kind of love, and they'd probably want the same in return. sometimes they need someone who can be hard on them, but that person has to know the right time to not risk scaring them off, y'know?
