Ethnicity in JJBA

I love that Araki decided to use different ethnicities for his characters and I could talk about it all day, to be honest.

Like, it all started with George I, Dario, Jonathan and Erina, and George II and Lisa Lisa as British people and then Joseph decided he likes Italians.

Boom: half-British half-Italian Holly Joestar who married a Japanese musician = half-Japanese, quarter Italian and quarter British Jotaro Kujo.

Jolyne is half-American, quarter Japanese and one eighth Italian and British each.

Josuke: half-Japanese and half-British, just like Giorno.

The only difference is that Giorno’s living in Italy because his mother said “yo I have a thing for European men” and married an Italian who forced Giorno to say goodbye to his Japanese origin.

As for his half brothers, all we know is that their mothers were all American. But I like to think that Rikiel’s mother is/was black, just like I do for the Costello sisters.

I have to admit, I was confused at first when I saw that Gloria didn’t have dark skin or dark hair like Hermes before I realized that they could be mixed, and the same goes for the Pucci children. Plus, it’s canon that Ermes is Mexican (I’m just not sure if half- or fully) and Pucci is Italian or Italo-American, which are also little details that I really love.

One thing that will always have a special place in my heart is Avdol being Egyptian. It has never been mentioned, but I like to think that he’s also muslim. Which is really important to me since I haven’t really seen a piece of media from non-muslim parts of the world that represented muslims accordingly. They’re either shown as terrorists or don’t exist at all. So this was extremely refreshing and he’s also black AND canonically OP af?? I love.

Japanese Noriaki Kakyoin with red hair? Now that’s what I like to see. I think he’s also a part of the Has Been Bullied Club and he was a very lonely child, so being with the Crusaders must’ve been really important to him.

Not to forget our beloved Frenchman Polnareff. I love how he switches to French just to emphasize things or when he’s too frustrated to even think in English. I relate a lot to that, especially because English is my third language of six languages in total.

I’ve also seen the headcanon of Rohan possibly being Indian or having Indian ancestors and while I don’t agree with that, it has actually crossed my mind when I heard his name for the first time (cliché, I know I’m sorry). It could also be that his parents just liked the sound of the name and that’s all to it, which I think was more the case.

Little things like these give me the freedom to headcanon whatever I want.

For example, I love the thought of Holly learning English and Italian from her parents and then teaching those to Jotaro, who then taught Italian and Japanese to Jolyne.

Or a crossover where the other JoJos and GioGio meet Jodio and Hermes starts laughing her ass off because of the Spanish meaning of the word jodio.

Or, on the angsty side of things, Jotaro being bullied by older students because he’s “only” half-Japanese. Just like Giorno was bullied (although I do not remember if it actually was because of his heritage, but I think so).

Not taking Part 7 – Part 9 characters into the equation because I haven’t finished reading Steel Ball Run yet, which means I didn’t even think about JoJolion and The JoJoLands.

The scene where Jonathan attacks Dio full force after he assaults Erina is probably going to end up going pretty differently - Jolyne is going to fight dirty, and be absolutely vicious in a way Jonathan could never manage.

Dio burned Danny alive in retaliation for Jonathan managing to successfully beat the shit out of him and scare him - what might he do in response to Jolyne's cunning and aggression?

holy fuck wait a minute yeah-

While the nature of the relationship likely wouldn't be the same as it would be in canon (after all, Erina would be like. 12/13 years old and Jolyne is 19), she still would've seen Erina as a very close friend. I don't doubt that Jolyne would still step in when those two other kids were bullying her, albeit unlike Jonathan her reasoning wouldn't be anything chivialry related. Hell, with the help of Stone Free, Jolyne might even be able to win that fight

Erina would still seek her out afterward, and while Jolyne wouldn't reciprocate the romantic feelings the other girl had...... well, Jolyne's pretty lonely. Sure there's Danny, but he is a dog, and Erina's kind and sweet and nice to hang around, and open minded enough that I think she'd be okay with Jolyne asking if they could be just friends

but of course, this is the 1880s in England, and naturally most people assume the pair to be romantically involved, especially given how close they are

Dio being one of them

you're absolutely right in how Jolyne is going to be brutal. Words can not properly express how overwhelmingly pissed she is going to be about all this, and what makes things worse for Dio is how no matter what he does, Jolyne just won't go down. Despite how much he punches and kicks, all his attacks seem either magically miss or just bounce right off (ofc, this is thanks to Stone Free), so Jolyne gets hardly a scratch on her. Hell, she's probably not even going to stop when George arrives, no matter what he says or what punishments he threatens to inflict.

now, do the both of these things make it easier for Dio to spin the story in his favor? Admittedly yes. I'd imagine she tries to tell George about what happened, about what Dio did, only to get brushed off because in his eyes Jolyne was the instigator here who beat poor, poor Dio near to death over some girl

I'd imagine after this incident, the shakey bond Jolyne might've had with George snapped completely

as for Danny........

Dio would probably still kill him. Sort of as a last ditch effort, a final attempt at getting some kind of control over the situation to remind Jojo of his place and what happens if he were to cross Dio

it backfires horribly

because before, Jolyne might've forgiven him. It would have taken YEARS and a lot of growth, but Jolyne is not blind to the environment and time they live in, where women are barely more than pretty objects and Dio has been given almost free reign as a noble's new adopted son. Before, she might've been able to forgive him because Dio was barely 12 and still a child and had likely learned a lot of things that weren't good. It could have been a mistake, one that someday he could look back at and be ashamed of

but then he kills Danny. He kills Danny by locking him in the incinerator and burning him alive

and Jolyne realizes he's doing this on purpose. That this wasn't just plain jealously, this was Dio actively doing everything in his power to make sure Jolyne would hurt

He's still 12. He's still a child.

But Jolyne will not take this lying down and she vows to herself she will never be his friend

(one night when she's alone, Jolyne feels the briefest bit of relief that she's here in this body. Just for a moment, just for a second, if only so the kindhearted 12 year old Jonathan who's messy journals sit on the bookcase didn't have to face Dio by himself)

Which character caused more good then harm, and harm then good in Jojo? Personally Kira did more good, seeing that if he was able to kill Jotaro, than Pucci would never go after Jolyne this saving the world, and Anasui caused more harm as he got Foo Fighters and Weather Report killed.

WAIT. WAIT.

Yes. He is the start of all of this right?

Yeah but it's also George the first, which comes for me to say, they both did more harm than good.

How?

First of all if George Joestar wasn't natively kind to Brando's DIO would've never made it to his manor(manor? Mansion?) And Dio Brando wouldn't have been able to stir s—t up.

At the same time they're more of a fifty-fifty, because they did pretty good things.

Then there's also the SPW foundation, who legit did so much for the Joestars.

But for me personally it would be, ... Jotaro, yes that son of a gun.

Why? Because as far as I can remember even though he stirred up s—t, he was actually trying his best.

Part 3? Did his f-cking best to protect everyone, but he's still a 17yro boy.

Part 4? Was most definitely the most responsible, trying his best to keep everyone alive, and safe when he could've just went home and stayed with his wife and daughter, but no he didn't, he knew he had responsibility at home, but he knew that if he didn't go out to fight, no one else will.

Like I said he could've stayed with his wife, and daughter instead of fighting and possibly, regain unwanted his trauma.

Part 5, he didn't do much here and I think it's a good sign because if he did, not only will his unwanted Trauma return, but he would also take down the Mafia by himself, but still either way, had it not been for Jotaro who sent Koichi, Giorno would've died to that shadow thingy.

Part 6? ... from the very beginning, Pucci planned on attacking Jolyne, just to get to Dio, regardless of the stand power or not, either way this man, decided that,

"NUH-UH, I'm sure she won't be happy to see me, but I sure as hell know that I won't let her stay in a f—king jail cell for something she did not f—king do."

And legit tried breaking her out of jail even if it was costing his life, and he genuinely thought he was gonna die, so he muttered out just how much he loved Jolyne.

Am I being biased? Maybe? Am I tired because I wrote this down at 3:56 am to 4:09 am? Yes.

Are there more characters I can think of? No. Jotaro is the best, and so are the others, but I'm too tired and I have school work so-

Okay so one thing that bothers me is all those comments with “you mean Jonathan’s son” or “nah Giorno’s more Jonathan’s son” on Mudad content.

Like WE GET IT!!

ALL OF THEM ARE BIOLOGICALLY JONATHAN’S

But was Jonathan the one to actually conceive them? No. It was Dio.

Look, I’m all for Jonadad but we as a fandom should focus on Jonadad content with George II. That’s something I really want to see but no one ever thinks about George II, probably because he didn’t get his own part like Holly.

People always forget about him or when it’s Mudad, it’s either Dio hanging out with only Giorno or only Donatello, Rikiel and Ungalo. There’s literally no in between.

I’m a Mudad truther, I know that Jonathan’s biologically the four dudes’ father but I ignore it because I want to acknowledge Dio as their biological father, since he was literally the one to conceive them.

I don’t know about y’all but in my opinion, Jonathan should spend time with his son George II and Dio should spend time with his sons Giorno, Donatello, Rikiel and Ungalo.

I want Jonathan and Dio to be uncles okay? Jonathan being excited to see his nephews and happy for his brother and Dio acting like he doesn’t care but he’s actually spoiling George II as much as he spoils his own sons.

Give me happy content with them.

The five cousins causing trouble together, Dio getting affection from his brother and sister-in-law even though he doesn’t want it and George I being a happy grandfather who’s also proud of his sons (although one of them has children without ever being married).

The same thing happens with Holly and Joseph too!!

Yes, Josuke is Joseph’s son and I love content with them.

But give me Holly being a daddy’s girl, Holly always choosing her father over her mother whenever someone asks the “who do you love the most” question, Holly and Suzie talking shit about Joseph in Italian behind his back, Holly giving Joseph a heart attack when she announces that Sadao proposed to her, Holly Joseph and Suzie crying their eyes out when she announces her pregnancy. Just. Them.

There’s so much we can explore with this huge ass family (and overall every character and other families like the Kawajiris or Diavolo | Doppio and Trish) but all that people focus on are the main JoJos (and the main villains).

One day, I will write this. Once I get the full plot and outline ideas. But I’m already planning it!
