#geoffrey burrow's end

i don't think geoffrey was completely dead when tula found him. i think that's the lie.
when she mercy-killed the bear, aabria described it as feeling "a little bit too familiar".
i think that he was on death's door, and tula chose to spare him a long, slow, painful death from... whatever it was. i think she was telling the truth that she didn't know what.

Tula says that Geoffrey died peeking his head above the snow, so knowing that he was shot we know he must have been shot in the head. But stoats are small, even compared to bullets, probably a good quarter of the size of their heads. So you’re not looking at a clean shot through the eye or the forehead, more likely akin to a shotgun blast where a good half is gone.
Do we think when Tula found him she knew, disfigured as he likely was? She probably did, and everything in her was begging maybe it’s not him and he’s still out there waiting for me to find him. Despite knowing deep in her heart and being able to recognize him even like that, searching for a sign that it’s not him. And then finding something, a specific scar or something he always carried, confirming her worst fears. And knowing she couldn’t take him back, so far from the burrow but also for everyone to see him like that, with none of the peaceful rest of death.
And just laying down in the snow, perfectly preserved and almost alive while he is covered in blood, bones showing.

A family can be: Two dead moms, a failed cult leader, an actual cult leader, the karate kid, his sister who is the first stoat professionally diagnosed with autism, three babies, a fucked up dog, dead mom 2’s hot boyfriend, a congested deus ex machina, and a teenage lesbian.

"if confidence could keep you alive Geoffrey would still be here"
Brennan, how about you just rip my heart out with your bare hands instead because I think it would be less painful than that line

thinking about lila blaming her dad for making tula's life bad now that we know that ava called geoffrey a fool for going alone
thinking about how kids learn more from how people act than what they say

geoffrey is a calico and fun fact about calico cats, the only way they can be male is through a rare genetic abnormality and even then the vast majority of them are sterile. and we know from the first stoats that stoats can change their gender identity (even if their reason was more about mythologising themselves than anything), so im just straight up headcanoning geoffrey as trans

i guess my one theory that i haven't heard people talking about before is just that i think in thorns traumatic memory, i think the humans were trying to keep the infected animals back from the radius they were setting up. so all those stoats that were being killed was control, trying to keep the infected animals away from breeding with noninfected populations

The moment that happens before the deception reveal is that Izzy says : you've never hesitated to help when we needed you. Did Geoffrey go to help when Thorn, Teedles and Oliver were in trouble? Did Tula refuse to go and that's how Geoffrey died? Because thunder on a clear day and the open field is how Thorn's worst day was described, too.
I don't think Tula would hide anything sinister, so I feel like she has to be lying out of guilt or regret. Did she argue with Geoffrey before he left? Is that why she never wants to be angry and always wants to help?
(Edit : the only other thing Tula says before that is that she knows the kids want her to be happy, but that she knows she won't always be there, so they have to listen to their own hearts. The only way that could be a lie is if she's undead or immortal somehow?? But Aabria says it's a lie of omission?? And what fundamental truth would Viola and Ava not know?? (Although Erika's face and silence was a little odd, so maybe?) There's nothing else that's suspect about that moment???? What did you do, Brennan????)

as i was going over the season and tula’s reveals, there was one thing that my brain kept sticking on every time. it’s at the very end, during tula’s epilogue. she says, “I’m going to go near the meadow, where Geoffrey—” and then she stops herself and changes it to “where I found Geoffrey.” and that stumble and that word choice kept needling at me and i think i’ve figured it out.
lila and jaysohn are not afraid to say, “our dad is dead,” to ask, “what killed Dad?”. but tula is different. now, i don’t have time to comb through every episode right now, but i already have the big moments transcribed and i did go back and check the episode transcripts that have already been uploaded so i do think this is pretty accurate. every time tula talks about it, it’s “the winter that we had lost Dad,” “saying that your father deserved what happened to him,” “Geoffrey was gone.” whenever possible, tula talks her way around it.
there is only one time when tula says, outright, “geoffrey’s dead.” :
“I said, ‘Geoffrey’s dead. I found him in the snow by the meadow.’”
when ava blames her for geoffrey dying. when she says tula should have been there.
she says it and she is shamed for it and she does not say it again.
i don’t actually know if was intentional on brennan’s part (and honestly, would not be surprised either way), but when he’s speaking and not tula, he doesn’t do it: “geoffrey died where i couldn’t find him until he was already gone. was there proof of what killed him when i got there?”
tula does not shy away from death. but she cannot forget that when she asked for comfort, for help, after her husband died, she was met with rebuke.
