Heartstopper, Vol. 2 & 3, Alice Oseman / Monstrous Affections: An Anthology of Beastly Tales, various / Pity the Reader: On Writing with Style, Kurt Vonnegut & Suzanne McConnell / Nineteen Claws and a Blackbird, Agustina Bazterrica
Getting back the reading habit. The short story collections have been good for it. A wide range, but mostly spooky.
Heartstopper is so very saccharine sweet, I feel like I’ve got cavities. But in a good way. It’s nice.
I'm visiting my parents' house for the first time in some years, and have found some interesting Briar Juvenilia! Here are links to bsky threads I made about the stuff I found that I feel like sharing:
Pages from a zine I made in early 2006, when I was 16 years old and in the eleventh grade
An extremely kind personal rejection note from Gavin J. Grant in response to a short story I wrote and submitted to Lady Churchill's Rosebud Wristlet at age 18, in probably April or May of 2008 (by the time I received the rejection, in July, I had turned 19). Also the first page of that story; he couldn't return the full manuscript because I underpaid on postage!
I think even five or six years ago I would have been embarrassed to share stuff like this with the general public. But now I feel a lot of tenderness towards the person I was half my life ago, and even though I've changed a lot, it no longer seems to me that I should disavow having been that person or try to forget about that person. There is more continuity than I would have perceived from a lesser distance, and honestly, I was pretty cool! I genuinely think that. I was a cool teenager, and very gifted/perceptive/precocious in some ways, and I had a lot of chutzpah or moxie or whatever you want to call it. I was handing this zine full of my weird hallucinatory poetry out to everyone I knew at school, including my teachers and kids who were not my friends! I was submitting the first short story I ever wrote that I was happy with to a magazine that published writers like Jeffery Ford and Nalo Hopkinson and Karen Russell!
i’ve been wanting to scratch this itch for a while so i will be compiling a list of all the things i remember having either read or watched because i feel like i’ve been hopping between fandoms a lot.

also working my way through the chosen and absolutely adore it, and planning to buy if we were villains by m.l rio. any suggestions for shows, books, anything like that would be really appreciated. it is my agenda to at least dip my toes in the shallow end of every fandom i can reach.
if you see anything you have watched or read on the lists, yay! it’s nice to know other people are nerding over these things as well.
I really think they’re not gonna do J cheating in s3 which on one hand I’m fine with since they made him bi and as a bi person myself I don’t want to see that awful stereotype on screen for the billionth time (granted I also feel like it was so tokenized because it was such a blip and I don’t think they’ll ever mention his attraction to men ever again or explore that in a meaningful way but hey maybe they’ll surprise me since I have low expectations when it comes to TV and bi representation; personally I think Gavin has great chemistry with Sean but I’m not sure they’d ever explore j/s since people may find it weird he’d bounce between the Conklin siblings and as of now Steven is straight in the show iirc) but also I read that s2 follows the book very closely according to some extras on set and it would make me mad if they show Conrad’s very human mistakes and then sugar coat j’s so he still looks like the “nice” guy…
I can’t say j is my favorite but I also liked that the books kinda went beyond his nice guy persona and showed how this behavior can be a red flag (bc there’s too many shows that romanticize the guy who definitely sees the girl as the prize and let them end up together and like sorry to Jere who I know loved belly in his own way but his romantic intentions with her started off wrong since deep down it was about getting back and stealing something from Conrad and that just turned me off to them romantically (I do like their friendship)) but then also show him overcome it (I.e. letting belly go at their wedding day and presumably finding happiness since he was mentioned to have a plus one at the b/c wedding) I think this would be nice to see on tv but idk
granted I feel like they have shown in s1 the darker sides of J already and people ignore it (ex. The firework scene like no jeremiah physical violence is not the answer to your problems😒 and him yelling and projecting at Conrad saying he only sees belly as a competition and then scheming to separate them) but idk I don’t know what other problem aside from the cheating that they could throw between b/j to have them on the brink of a breakup that leads to their sham engagement happen for s3 (my worst fear is they’ll make belly the cheater to take the heat off of J since many of his Stans always say belly was projecting when she claimed him to cheat bc “technically” they were broken up and she was still in love with C and this would will further villanize her relationship with Conrad and thus prop up j… and that would remind me of how dirty the second to all the boys movie did LJ by not showing the very real mistakes Peter made in their relationship and making it look like she just freely bounced between John and Peter for no reason)… anyways this is a ramble but I’ve just been thinking about it since s2 is nearing (and in my heart I need it to be s3 already lol)
okay I have thought long and hard about this specific topic and I hear what you're saying. but I still firmly believe the cheating thing is going to happen in the show. I just...idk. there's just no way around it tbh. It's kind of like having Susannah miraculously live...the story wouldn't be the same. I think the cheating went a lot deeper than the surface level people are stuck at, at least in my interpretation of the book. The whole thing about it is that Jeremiah found out that Belly saw Conrad in Cousins in December and she never told him, and Jere spent months secretly brooding about that and being angry (somewhat rightfully) and the way he says things in the books I feel like Jeremiah thought/assumed that something happened between Conrad and Belly (cause they were alone at the beach house!) and he thinks that's why she never told him she saw Conrad. So I feel like after the whole fight about Cabo and Belly not wanting to go (bc she wanted to be in Cousins instead!) Jere went to Cabo pissed and jealous and slept with what's her face out of spite, to get back at Belly. at least that's my interpretation. But he obviously ended up realizing it was messed up and tried to make it better with the engagement. And then as a double whammy to Jeremiah, because of the engagement, Belly ends up spending the summer alone in Cousins with Conrad planning the wedding which probably made Jere even more angry (it's just so ironic lol).
I'm also with you on the point about Jeremiah being portrayed as the nice, perfect guy up until the 3rd book, and I really hope the show captures what the book did. Because they have worked overtime showing how perfect Jeremiah is and how he's the better option and trying to sell him as the best person. I think the way you get to see his flaws and mistakes (which are very human but also he was a jerk for a lot of the 3rd book outside of the cheating thing and ppl are blind to that I feel, like everyone is stuck on just the cheating). I also think it was super important for Belly to see Jere's flaws. She never truly appreciated what she had with Conrad and the person he is because she couldn't see past his very human mistakes (which all happened when his mother was dying and immediately after her death!!!) and she got so stuck on what Conrad did wrong she looked over and felt like Jeremiah was perfect and seemed so much better, funnier, happier, etc, etc, it was very much a "the grass is always greener on the other side" type of situation. The show definitely did show a lot more darker, more flawed sides of Jeremiah pretty early, but I still think they also worked really hard making him look perfect like in the books (up until book 3). I also think that's partly intentional, part of the point is that Belly had very idealized and romanticized ideas of both boys and what dating them and being around them all the time would be like and her bubble needed to be burst by reality.
anyway, all of that is to say that I still firmly believe the cheating thing is going to happen in the show. So prepare yourself while you have time. There's just nothing else that could compare to that to create not just the sham engagement but the angst, the jealousy, the anger and everything and then the way Conrad finds out about the cheating and immediately runs to Belly, all pissed off at Jere...I don't think anything else could get us there.
also as a side note: Jere and Steven did have good chemistry, but also I LOVE THEIR FRIENDSHIP TOO MUCH TO GO THERE. The friendship between Steven, Jere, and Conrad is so important and special and I feel like in the books they're presented as being like brothers. I don't think I could handle another lifelong friendship being ruined tbh (cause Belly and Jeremiah also had a great friendship and I loved it in the books but the show kinda fastforwarded over it). And I don't think it's something that could ever be explored because it gets too close the whole premise/storyline of Belly dating the Fisher brothers. But there's no harm in shipping! I personally thought Jeremiah and Taylor had really great chemistry as well (Taylor and Steven were also good together and I do love them) and I wanted to see more moments with Jere and Taylor. I am also still salty that the show basically erased Jere and Taylor's whole brief dating thing and some of the best flashbacks from the first book. But they're clearly going in the Steven/Taylor direction for now so I'm not getting my hopes up.
last song i listened to - I've been really into COSMIC DJENT/PROG METAL lately. Got Discoveries by Andromida [sic] on right now. First time listening to this album. Pretty good! It's a one-man project by a guy from Pittsburg, USA. If you're a fan of instrumental metal with kind of a "vast" yet "optimistic" feel too it then definitely check it out!! Similar to Mechina's instrumental stuff. Andromida's Bandcamp link
currently reading - hreeruhg so many... Monstrous Affections by Kelly Link and Gavin J. Grant is the one on the top of my pile. Bunch of Japanese grammar books w/e. The Penguin Book of Dragons by Scott G. Bruce... I am chronically like 50% of the way through like 10 different books at any given moment. This is hardly the tip of the iceberg, I'm just too lazy to go over to my nightstand to remember what all's over there hahaha
currently watching - Good Omens season 2 like once every other week. I don't really watch TV. Uhh... Jerma and Joel Vinesauce highlight clips, I guess. Watch those with breakfast sometimes.
current obsession - I haven't been free of Guilty Gear since 2021... Analog music formats are my second love, followed by my 3D printer. Recently got back into Flight Rising too. Pretty fun!
Look at my beautiful bee and sun themed girl:
I tag whoever reads this and would like to fill it out 🐛
As I was making my silly little 2022 book gift guide, I thought I’d round up some (teeny tiny, small, and medium) indie presses to go support this season and beyond. Small press books make especially great gifts since your book-loving friends and family are less likely to already have read them.
Enchanted Lion Books - Beautiful, unique, and translated picture books for kids and adults with more experimental sensibilities. I recommend the Chirri & Chirra books and Sato the Rabbit, A Sea of Tea.
Candlewick Press - If you’re a fan of Jon Klassen and the hat books (or Mac Barnett or Carson Ellis--the group behind the Picture Book Manifesto), you’ve already heard of this publisher, but they do make outstanding children’s books.
Small Beer Press - Speculative fiction fans, run over to Kelly Link and Gavin J. Grant’s incredible, weird, magic book factory. I recommend In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan for the fantasy fans or anything by Elizabeth Hand.
Two Dollar Radio - Their books are cute in trim size and weird in content--the ideal combination. You can also join their tattoo club and get 10 free books. Their lobby/HQ/bookshop/cafe seems like a dream.
Hub City Press - Poetry, fiction, and nonfiction with a focus on promoting diverse stories and underrepresented voices in the South. Novels are more conventional and historical. Good, bleak poetry and thoughtful, specific nonfiction.
Night Boat Books - A bit more on the esoteric side. Their books would be great for academics and poets and anyone interested in queer studies or works in translation.
Wave Books - A poetry press with gorgeous books and lit crit. I recommend Bluets by Maggie Nelson (her other books are published by Graywolf, keep scrolling).
Dorothy - A tiny feminist publisher of fiction or about fiction founded by author Danielle Dutton (check out Wild Milk by Sabrina Orah Mark or The Complete Stories of Leonora Carrington for some surreal, dreamlike times).
Feminist Press - Books with a focus on gender, sexuality, and marginalized voices. (Margot Atwell, publisher/editor, has a newletter On the Books, for publishing nerds out there who want to hear a fresh perspective on what’s up with this convoluted industry.)
Tin House - Eclectic--both literary and commercial. I recommend Rabbit Cake by Annie Hartnett.
Milkweed Editions - Nature lovers, these books are for you. Milkweed is also Poet Laureate Ada Limón’s publisher. I recommend Bright Dead Things and her newest collection, The Hurting Kind.
Graywolf Press - Want more Maggie Nelson? Or Carmen Maria Machado? Or experimental printing like Telephone by Percival Everett with its 3 versions? It’s all happening in the Minnesota literary world (I’m serious).
Coffee House Press - Also part of the Minnesota book group. Their books are on the experimental and readable side.
Catapult/Counterpoint/Soft Skull - These presses are sisters. You’ve definitely seen these books around--they do hit the bestseller list and are stacked in neat piles at all the best indie bookshops. Danielle Dutton’s (founder of Dorothy, mentioned above) book Margaret the First is published by Catapult.
50 Watts Books - Surreal reprints of older books in stunning colors; the curation of their bookshop is also impeccable and unique.
McSweeney’s - If you have a lowbrow/highbrow sense of humor and enjoy satire, these books are for you. They also publish the creative magazine for creative kids, Illustoria.
Nobrow Press/Flying Eye Books - UK based press for comic and bright color lovers of all ages. I recommend the Hilda series by Luke Pearson and Hicotea by Lorena Alvarez. Katie Harnett’s and Simona Ciraolo’s picture books are also wonderful.
Pioneer Works - This is the book intersection for art, tech, design, music, and science. I recommend Notes on My Dunce Cap by Jesse Ball for (arts) teachers or anyone interested in pedagogy.

“Stalwart Shipper Braving Gun Threat Overcomes Robber,” Toronto Globe. October 31, 1932. Page 1 & 2.

Pitched Battle In London Tobacco Warehouse Results in Capture
----
WINDOW ‘DIVE’ FUTILE
----
(Staff Correspondence of The Globe.)
London, Ont., Oct. 30 - A pitched battle with a masked bandit, who used his gun to club his intended victim, ended Saturday night in the capture of Oscar Sorensen, 48 years old, laborer, of London and Toronto, as the sequel to his alleged attempted hold-up of G. E. Coleman & Co., wholesale tobacco, at 432 Rideout Street.
Sorensen’s capture was the result, the police say, of the defiance of Peter F. Buchanan, the company’s husky shipper. Faced by Sorensen wearing a handkerchief over his face, and carrying another over a gun, Buchanan lurched for the intruder’s arm, and began a fight that did not end until the marauder was in the hands of Detectives Gavin Monohan and Earl Knight. He is charged with robbery, and will appear in City Court Monday.
Buchanan was behind a showcase, not suspecting trouble, when he turned to find himself covered. The gun, afterward found to be a heavy imitation automatic, was held within arm’s length, it is alleged, as Sorensen ordered, ‘Stick them up!’ As Buchanan hesitated, Sorensen is to said to have become more commanding, adding the threat: ‘’I’ll shoot!’ Buchanan’s answer was to match the intruder’s wrist and throw him across a side counter.
Attempt to Escape Fails
In the struggle, furniture was knocked over, and G. E. Coleman, attracted from a rear room, joined in overpowering the hold-up man. Sorensen, left in Bucahanan’s charge while Mr. Coleman telephoned for the police, broke loose, and dashing to the rear warehouse, took a headlong dive at the window, according to the authorities. He smashed the glass but fell back dazed from the iron bars he did not know were outside the glass. He raced back to the front office, and tried another dive against a small plate-glass window, which did not break.
Finding further fight useless, the police allege, he pleaded to be liberated, saying he was stealing to support his wife and five children. Police booked him as 48 and single. During the past year he has lived in Clarence Street, London, and Richmond Street West, Toronto.
Burglaries Admitted.
Seven recent house burglaries, mostly in West London, were accounted for Saturday, when Edward Brennan, 19, and his brother, Earl Brennan, 16, registered pleas of guilty in city court. They were remanded a week for investigate and sentence. The houses the brothers admitted robbing are those of Police Sergeant Percy Last, Wharncliffe Road; Grant Fisher, son of Justice R. G. Fisher, 319 St. George Street; Wilfrid Johanson, 41 St. Andrew Stree; Walter Cotton, 48 Evergreen Avenue; Stanley Peach, 5 Carruthers Avenue; Fred Clark, 11 Guelph Street; and J. B. Roddick, 721 Colborne Street.
Meme thing because I'm procrastinating. Originally from here. Don't feel like answering every question though.
1. What is your species? - Ugh....
2. Are you out? To whom? - I talk to friends about it sometimes but I know most of them think it's weird. Twitter and Tiktok kinnies have made things... difficult.
3. How old were you when you realized you were not human? What made you realize it? - [REDACTED]. Friends joked about it. Went and read some studies and anecdotal essays about it. Realized they were right.
4. Do you identify as a part of the “otherkin”, or, “therian” community? What communities do you identify with? - I stay on the edges and just observe but sometimes I use the 'kin label. Can't narrow it down between "otherkin" and "fictionkin," hence an apostrophe.
6. Have you faced any abuse because of identifying not human? - No. There have been jokes but people shut up when I put my foot down.
8. Do you believe there should be non-human pride? What do you imagine it being like? - It'd be nice if more people were accepting of alterhuman identities but it's very hard to get anyone outside the community to take it seriously. Even parts of the community itself don't take it seriously. If these obstacles were overcome, I think a non-human pride event would be similar to a furry gathering but with a larger variety of non-animal things. Maybe similar to a combination furry/anime convention.
9. What does being not human mean to you? - Slow organization of whatever the hell is bouncing around inside my skull.
10. What have other people said about your non-human nature? - They're jealous of my excellent night vision and high tolerance for spicy food.
14. Tell us about a time you met another non-human, whether in real life or online. - The sister of a friend of a friend once dated a guy that was a vampire. Him and the sister had gotten frisky and he'd bitten her and left marks, which her brother was not happy about. I don't think he knew it was just a foreplay thing but the family was weirdly religious. Who knows. Anyway, the brother ambushed the guy and sucker punched his balls. It was brutal, I don't know why they didn't just talk it out. After the guy recovered, they finally came to an understanding about it but the whole thing was wild. He got punched when I was like 4ft away lmao
16. Your favorite “non-human” book (as in, non-human characters are the main focus). - Monstrous Affections by Kelly Link & Gavin J. Grant. It's an anthology.
17. Your favorite “non-human” movie. - Lost Boys is good. Terminator on a technicality.
19. Is being non-human spiritual for you? - No.
20. Tell us a few thoughts about what it’s like being your species. - Always fogging up the damn windows. Weird dreams.
22. What do you believe causes non-human identity? - From the studies I've read, it makes sense that in a lot of cases it's a coping mechanism for some difficult to process trauma. There's the spiritual aspect too, though I haven't read as much on that and won't write about it here. Another possibility is that everyone plays pretend as a kid. You're supposed to just stop doing that once you reach a certain age? Alterhumanity is deeper than just "pretend," but it's bullshit expecting people to not ever feel like something else as adults.
