Danmei and Baihe C Novels and Manhua Officially Licensed in English

Things are getting licensed fast enough that keeping a list like this up-to-date is basically impossible, but I saw someone asking in the tags so I figured I'd try. All titles are danmei unless otherwise noted (very little baihe is licensed so far). I've included Chinese titles and linked novelupdates for each title when I was able to find them, but sometimes publishers change the original titles so much that I can't track them down, apologies.

Basically: this is everything I know of as of May 7, 2024. There might be more. I tried.

For the latest danmei news, Danmeinews.com is a great resources.

Note that some of this information was sourced from this Carrd, last updated in March 2023.

There is a list of danmei with official licenses on NovelUpdates, and a similar list on Goodreads. Both look fairly up to date to me. Here's another danmei-specific list on Reddit that to my eye looks accurate for the larger publishers but isn't thorough for some of the smaller ones.

There are a handful of titles I know of that are official translations of C Novels, where the C Novels aren't danmei or baihe but are often treated as adjacent within fandom (as in: I've seen people shipping characters from them, lol). I've included two above under the entry for titles from Aloha Comics (Link Click and Nirvana in Fire) and here are a couple others I currently know of:

The Grave Robbers' Chronicles (Daomu Biji) by Nanpai Sanshu (six volumes are available in English from Things Asian Press

The Legend of the Condor Heroes (She Diao Yingxiong Chuan) by Jin Yong from St. Martin's Press

Romance of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguo Yanyi), attributed to Luo Guanzhong, available in multiple translations

The Seven Heroes and Five Gallants (Zonglie Xiayi Chuan), attributed to Shi Yukun, there are two translations to English listed at the linked Wikipedia page

Note that to the best of my knowledge both of these are considered very substandard translations. I've personally read the official DMBJ translations and... yeah... and I've heard the LOCH translation is also mediocre.

I will add to the "Honorable Mentions" list if I find any other more mainstream titles with official translations.

Please don't come at me for including a couple classics. The characters shippable, what can I do? I've written fic for Romance of the Three Kingdoms...

A handful of other licenses are mentioned on the Carrd I linked at the beginning of this post; I have no idea the status of those titles and wasn't able to find information on them while putting together this post other than what was listed on that Carrd, so I've omitted them.

As a final note, I've personally purchased from every printer on this list EXCEPT Monogatari Novels (I'm holding off because of the controversy and will see how things play out) and Chaleuria (which I vaguely knew existed but nothing beyond that).

Seven Seas translation varies but the editing is general strong and the editions are sturdy and nice. Extras that have come with final volumes are lovely. I am buying literally everything they publish except for You've Got Mail, due to information about the author that was shared with me that the author is a transphobe. Note that Kinnporsche by Daemi is not danmei as it's Thai (and I've heard unsavory things about the author - I don't have a link for that as the information was shared with me on Discord, and I encourage you to do your own research rather than taking my word for it). No judgement if you make a different choice than me, to be clear, I'm just sharing the information I have and why I personally am not buying the books). Note that Seven Seas isn't without controversy, especially for treating their contractors poorly resulting in them unionizing. Some people have also been unhappy with the fidelity of their translations compared to the original Chinese (I've been satisfied personally but ymmv).

Peach Flower House has inconsistent inconsistent editing quality, but the books are very readable, and I'm excited that they're working with translators such as E. Danglars. I haven't bought any of their special editions so can't speak to their extras, but I've bought all their print translations and will continue to do so going forward.

I just got my first title from Via Lactea last week and finished reading it on Sunday, and the translation read very well and there were minimal errors. It also came with a bundle of cute extras, which I wasn't expecting and pleased, and writing this post has caused me to cave and spend $150 to buy the rest of their books. Thank you, tax refund. (Should I spend this money? No. Did I anyway? ...)

No Rosmei titles have actually shipped yet, so I can't speak to their quality, though the previews they've shared on social media (as outlined here, for example) read decently and I'm optimistic. The cover art is also lovely, and they've been communicative and responsive, for example they've already issued a statement related to a recent controversy over perceived poor marketing for At the World's Mercy.

Tl:dr, the above is absolutely everything I personally know about mlm and wlw Chinese novels and manhua that have been licensed for English publication. I hope it helps someone.

Wang Chuan Feng Hua Lu (忘川风华录) Masterpost

Wang Chuan Feng Hua Lu (忘川风华录) is a Vocal synth (Vocaloid and SynthV) music project. It consists of songs themed around different figures throughout Chinese history. The project is a collaboration between different artists and creatives, with music and videos featuring prominent traditional Chinese elements. The project's title translates to "The Records of Magnificence of the Wangchuan" - In Chinese mythology, "Wangchuan" (or River of Forgetting) is a river in the Underworld that can rid one of their past life's memories, similar to the river Lethe.

A mobile game adaptation has also been developed by NetEast. Unfortunately, I haven't played it so I can't give much insight on it. However, I assume that its premise is similar to that of the idea behind the project as a whole: all these historical figures meeting each other in the Underworld after they died. Maybe.

what have been BLs that took you by surprise this year?

I’d say Kabe Koji, My Ride, and 21 Days Theory both surprised me with how much I really liked the adult elders in both of them. Ghost Host, Ghost House surprised me with how much I bought the desire between the leads. Love in the Air surprised me by not only being an engaging watch, but also in helping me make friends with some of the kinksters in fandom.

I absolutely did not see Rainbow Prince coming, nor how much I would unironically love it.

DNA Says I Love you went to a queer space I hadn’t even thought about.

what have been BLs that you felt a bit disappointed with this year?

Bite Me. I will never stop lamenting how much I hurt for Mark Siwat that this project went sideways for no real reason. Star and Sky, too, because goddamn were those boring and irritating. Love Area the series.... just ugh.

what has been your favorite BL this year?

Hmm... this is hard. If I have to pick one, then Gameboys 2. The maturity that show had in the way they handled the complexities of a new couple and the dynamics with their queer friends is sublime. There’s a depth to the way the IdeaFirst Company approaches storytelling that I think gets lost in the conversations about tropes and chemistry.

So much. Koisenu Futari for sure, because we never get to see ace stories. Sleep With Me is my favorite GL of the year right now (yes, more than GAP). I enjoyed Extraordinary Attorney Woo a lot (even if I’m unsure how to talk about it due to feedback from autistic folks). Our Flag Means Death. Heartstopper. Young Royals 2. Abbott Elementary.

I absolutely came apart because of 180 Degree Longitude Passes Through Us. Cannot reflect on this year without talking about it.

I honestly didn’t think I was going to like this as much as I did. It’s pretty predictable for this genre, and has its cheesy moments, but I really like the overall consistency of it and what I mean by that is it’s pretty solid in the storyline flow (minus the time skip and breakup bit) The chemistry between the main leads is spectacularly like 👌 (even felt sorry for the second male lead, overall yes this is cliche but it has great moments.

King’s Avatar is amazing

SO if you’ve followed along with my screaming for the past couple days first, thanks that must’ve been really annoying, second, I’ve decided to condense and organize my thoughts on The King’s Avatar because I realized about half way that I’ve been thinking of everyone in terms of dogs and screaming so....

FIRST story, A+ amazing incredible. Found family out the wazoo with a solid and surprisingly believable esports plot. Like I was seriously impressed by the amount of detail put into the game itself and not just in terms of the cgi, cool down times, icons, hp bars, there are so many little details on the set of the game I’m blown away by that alone. The plot is solid with some really great pacing. Even when nothing is technically happening progress is always being made at least on a character level. Everything always felt super grounded. Like apart from the ridiculously large buildings for esports training nothing felt insanely implausible. Ye Xiu was strong but not OP ridiculous you are already dead strong which just made everything even better because I could definitely see something like this happening is Overwatch or League.

SECOND music and cinematography. My god was this amazing!!! There’s this really specific track that plays during battles and that I just can’t fucking get enough of! Everything is integrated so well and the shots are just so fucking nice to look at!! They also fully took advantage of the cgi to create some really great shots in game while still making it feel like a video game. 10/10

THIRD AND THE BEST PART characters. The characters are the heart and SOUL of this series and my god are they done well. Everyone and I mean EVERYONE is given some sort of empathetic pull. Everyone feels so real and human. There’s no weird unnecessary hatred between the top players it’s all mutual respect and friendship. People who have known each other for years FEEL LIKE THEYVE KNOWN EACHOTHER FOR YEARS!!! There empathy and sympathy and everyone makes choices for a reason and those reasons are always so grounded you can believe every single one of them.

Earlier I said I’d ended up think of the characters as dogs because I just kept going “he’s like a puppy!” Every time someone new was introduced. With a few NOTABLE exceptions, behold the dogs of King’s avatar.

Ye Xiu: scheming puppy useless outside of video games

Qiao Yifan: PUPPY BABY BEST BOY!!!

Tang Ruo: sulky puppy who thinks it’s bigger than it is but is still pretty big. Definitely a lesbian

Chen Guo: an excitable puppy who can’t always remember what to do but goddamn is she willing to try. Tang Ruo’s girlfriend

Bao Zi: not a single brain cell in sight. The dumbest dog you’ve ever seen, the kind that runs into walls because he can’t figure out how to stop when chasing a ball

Luo Ji: the smartest puppy. Math puppy who is the softest lil bean. Needs love always.

Wei Chen: old dog that barks way to loud but knows how to play super well, even if he does need to take super long naps afterwards

An Wenyi: a puppy who just needs love to turn into a pile of happy goo. Occasionally lashes out but always comes back looking for friends.

Wu Chen: a good boy even if he does occasionally break stuff. Always ready to be a good boy, a helpful boy, soft dad dog

I know I’m probably forgetting people but these are the big ones. I could scream about them individually and maybe I will but not here.

Tl:dr Kong’s Avatar is an amazing show and @weilongfu should expect my letter from courts for compensation for emotional damage soon.

wow all that accent talk is so interesting. i didn't even know there was diff accents in banana. i'm watching their reality show and i didn't distinguish between them. can you elaborate which type of accents do they have? :o

I’ll try my best to! I also think the accents/regional representation in banana is really fun and unique ^^ I’m going off personal observations, so if anyone wants to add on their two cents or correct me, feel free to! (ps. My family speaks with a Taiwanese accent, so I’m more familiar with how that sounds than other ones) Usually I find myself distinguishing Mandarin Chinese accents by paying attention to 4 things:

(1) Zhi, Chi, Shi? Or Zi, Ci, Si?In Chinese, syllables “zh, ch, sh” are retroflex sounds. This means that “zh, ch, sh” are pronounced with more of a tongue curl, with the tongue almost touching the roof of the mouth. However, some (southern) regions will drop the retroflex sound and pronounce the syllables as “z, c, s” instead. In pronouncing “z, c, s”, the tongue is flat and touching the bottom teeth.

(2) Ending in “-Er”If the speaker uses this, you’ll hear an"-er” sound at the end of words or as if words are pronounced with a slightly curled back tongue.

(3) Special endings and expressionsColloquial Chinese has a lot of special endings to express certain emotions. You might hear speakers end their sentences with what sounds like “ah”, “oh”, “ba”, “la”, etc. There are a few endings are characteristic of certain regional accents. The flow or the duration they hold out the sound might also be an indication of which region they’re from.

(4) Different TonesI was reluctant to put this on the list because unless you’re familiar with Mandarin, you won’t catch this immediately. Chinese is a tonal language with Mandarin having 4 basic tones. Some regions may use a different tone for the same word! For example, “to expect” without tones is “qi dai”. Most people from mainland China will pronounce this as “qī (tone 1) dài” whereas you’re likely to hear people from Taiwan pronounce this as “qí (tone 2) dài”.

Now back to the banana boys. I’ve categorized them into broadly what accents they speak with based on what they say they speak or where they’re from. I also put the accents from geographically north to south, since there tends to be more overlap the closer geographically a region is to another.

Northern Chinese Accent (Li Ruotian, Jiang Jingzuo, Gao Maotong)

Standard pronunciation of “Zhi, Chi, Shi”

Endings in “-Er”

Southern Chinese Accent (Lu Dinghao, Lin Chaoze)

Standard pronunciation of “Zhi, Chi, Shi”

Little to no endings in “-Er”

Taiwanese Accent (Qiu Zhixie, Lin Yanjun, Bei Honglin)

“Zhi, Chi, Shi” → “Zi, Ci, Si”

Certain words have different tones

Imo Qiu Zhixie has the most Taiwanese accent because in addition to all the above, the way he talks is pretty expressive (more ups and down in his tone?)

💞- fav confession/big speech?

Obviously, it's Pat screaming his love for Pran on the steps of the architecture faculty. I think it's this one because it was a gift Pran gave to him. Oftentimes, a confession is sprung on someone, and that's just so embarrassing for me.

Something less current, and I'm sure some of y'all are gonna be mad, but for the longest time it was the second time Arthit confesses his love for Kongpob publicly at their work event in SOTUS S. I have listened to many of my lesbian friends lament how many girls were gay-until-graduation when I was in school, and so seeing Arthit choose to be out in a professional setting and fully commit the long-term of his life to living openly and honestly with Kongpob was really nice for me.

🎀- fav first kiss?

Feels cheeky to say Pat and Pran (Bad Buddy) again, but damn if their first kiss didn't also come with such fantastic drama that it'll always stand out for me.

Stylistically, and in terms of all the difficulty that went into filming it, I think the underwater kiss between Teh and Oh-aew in I Told Sunset About You should always be mentioned. That kiss was hard for PP because he couldn't see and he's terribly afraid of fish.

I think I really liked all of the quarantine show kisses a lot. I think the stakes were really high for a lot of them, and so the choice to trust someone with your health really stuck with me, because so many of my friends and elders in the community survived AIDS. For the kisses I liked during all the quarantine stuff, I'd like to highlight in order:

Gavreel and Cairo's (Gambeoys) plastic sheet kiss. I'm a bit bummed that this one was removed in the Netflix edit, because this one felt so powerful with everything going on.

Key and Chen (Boys Lockdown) kiss when Chen is forced to stay with Key because of a lockdown in his neighborhood. I like this one because while they both knew it was ill-advised, the obvious desire between the two of them really got me.

The imagined kiss in See You After Quarantine was also really solid.

In terms of good chemistry overall? I think Taiwan does a really good job consistently. I remember the first kiss I really enjoyed in BL was from Qiu Zi Xuan and Xia Yu Hao in History 2: Crossing The Line (both the fictional kiss in Yu Hao's mind and their first one at the net). I'm also a fan of the "real" first kiss between Gao Shi De and Zhou Shu Yi on the bridge in We Best Love: No. 1 For You.

- ft. qiao yifan as our izuku protagonist. while he has no main single tormentor like bakugou was for izuku, he was a social outcast for being weak (either quirkless or some really lame quirk he can’t really use). dreamed of being a hero but this was out of reach until ye xiu (all might) sees his potential and grants him the ghostblade power

- for the purposes of this au, the younger proplayers are ua students, while the veterans are pro heores/ua teachers/etc

- idk about the villains so don’t ask lol

- ANYWAY let’s go. thoughts under cut bc it got long

- gao yingjie as todoroki, wang jiexi as a not-abusive endeavor. yingjie isn’t bakugou because even though he’s like a link to yifan’s past, yingjie is just… very not-bakugou in temperament. so instead, yifan and yingjie are childhood friends, although with limited interactions because of yingjie’s extensive training (again, not as bad as endeavor, but wang jiexi is still relatively strict)

- tang rou as uraraka, except less bubbly and more of the intensity shown during her fight with bakugou. in fact, we can say she’s kind of a mix of uraraka and bakugou – not as sweet and kind as uraraka, not as violently aggressive as bakugou, but stubborn and determined and hard-working and ambitious

- an wenyi as tsuyu, smart and observant and blunt and tends to speak his mind

- bao rongxing as kaminari. brings ppl together but also idiot mode

- luo ji as yaomomo maybe? v book-smart but justifiably insecure about practical battle ability. plus some jirou-style annoyance at bao zi/kaminari

- mo fan as dorky edgelord tokoyami

- lu hanwen as kirishima. i don’t know lu hanwen’s personality very well but he seems a good fit – bright, talkative, brings ppl together, determined to live up to his hero (huang shaotian)

- qiu fei as iida. also don’t know qiu fei’s personality too well but he seems pretty rule-abiding and down-to-earth

- okay now moving out of the students of class 1a

- ye xiu as all might, as mentioned earlier. i think this is pretty given

- han wenqing as aizawa maybe??? former full-time pro hero but got injured or smth so had to take up teaching (and hero duties on the side)? v scary, esp at first. kinda-rivalry with ye xiu.

- zhang xinjie as recovery girl hahahahahahahahahahaha actually tho every time i see sir nighteye i think of zxj but he doesn’t quite fit that role so.... maybe a nighteye doppelganger who heals ppl and gets frustrated at the ridiculously unhealthy habits of most of the ppl he interacts with

- yu wenzhou as principal nedzu. smart and shrewd and does a good job of running the prestigious school full of students and teachers with their own possibly-dangerous quirks (both powers and personalities haha)

- huang shaotian as present mic maybe? rip everyone’s ears

- zhou zekai, jiang botao, sun xiang as the big three. sun xiang is nejire, and then zhou zekai as tamaki and jiang botao as mirio? except here zhou zekai is more of the leader of the three and not jiang botao

- wei chen as gran torino. old and kinda shameless (wei chen would totally do that fake-death thing for the heck of it) but still extremely skilled and knows what he’s doing

- fang rui as another ua teacher. i actually don’t know the teachers that well tho so idk who exactly

- zhang jiale as the no.2 hero – jk that’s wang jiexi, poor zhang jiale isn’t even second in this universe, sorry. but he runs a good hero agency alongside sun zheping

- chu yunxiu as mt.lady perhaps? runs a good agency of her own. honestly we can just say this about most of the captains of the other notable teams like xiao shiqin, li xuan, etc

- loulan slash def started out as one of what stain would call “corrupt” heroes, just in it for the money/fame, but he got better

- chen guo as midoriya inko but moms more aggressively

- blue river as detective naomasa maybe, except slightly more tired.

- su muqiu as tragic backstory shimura nana

- does this make su mucheng shigaraki???

- but nah lol su mucheng as midnight, kind and supportive toward the students
