Warm, part 1:

This will focus a bit more on Cobalt's own batchmates but don't fret, there'll still be some bad batch action in there.

Sigma squad) Blastbolt, Bluestreak and Gunfire), Gamma squad ( Mortar, Ando, Racket and Ace) as well as the Beta twins (Crest and Kite) were relaxing in their barracks when Nala se appeared in the doorway.

The cadets threw aside what they were doing (quite literally in the twins' case) and stood at attention.

"I trust you are all well cadets." Nala se said looking at each of them.

"Yes mistress." The cadets all chorused in unison.

Blastbolt suddenly noticed movement from behind Nala se.

"Come CC-1043 it is time for you to meet your new unit." Nala se said ushering a small form forward.

In front of them stood a tiny cadet who could be no older than five, he had light brown chestnut hair as well as dark blue eyes that looked all over the large room.

He also had a very shy but eager smile on his face.

"H-Hello." He said giving a very shy wave.

"CC-1043 shall be apart of the sigma unit as a replacement for CC-6737." Nala se said.

The members of Sigma squad flinched visibly at the mention of Catcher's number but didn't say anything.

"He is the fifth and final member of the sigma batch and I hope you will all help him acclimate to his new unit." Nala se said looking at Sigma squad.

"Yes sir." The three cadets replied.

"Good, lights out shall commence shortly, please show CC-1043 to his bunk, goodnight." Nala se said before walking out the room and leaving the others with a very nervous 1043.

The moment she had left nine sets of eyes fell onto 1043.

"So you're Catcher's replacement." Gunfire said looking at the much smaller cadet.

"Umm, yes it appears so, I'm CC-1043, very nice to meet you all." 1043 said.

Blastbolt approached 1043 with a warm smile.

"I'm Blastbolt squad leader, this is Bluestreak and Gunfire, that's Gamma squad's leader Mortar and his squamates Ando, Racket and Kite, and those two are the Beta twins Crest and Kite." Blastbolt said pointing to each cadet as he said their name.

Not long after greetings and a few hugs (mainly from the twins) were given the chime that signified lights out sounded.

"C'mon newbie, bedtime." Blastbolt said taking a hold of 1043's hand and leading him over to Catcher's old bunk.

1043 got into the bed and Blastbolt tucked him in before away.

1043 closed his eyes and soon fell asleep wondering what the weeks would bring.

The next few weeks were intense and tiring as training soon began for the cadets.

The simulations were getting tougher, bit to mention Sigma squad had to adjust to having a fourth member again, especially one who was at least 3 years younger than them.

A few times 1043 snuck out the barracks after curfew to try and improve his skills, this resulted in 99 finding him up late one night and having to bring him back.

However that also resulted in 1043 finally getting his name, his name was now Cobalt.

Sleeping in random places had become more of a habit for them as their training intensified, although some of these had become rather hazardous, Ando had nearly drowned in his soup bowl when he fell asleep at dinner and even Crest with all his energy had yawned, none of them even knew he could yawn.

Although some of the accidents were funny, Kite falling onto Ace who fell onto Mortar like a set of sleepy dominoes had made Racket snort juice up his nose.

The twins rolling out of their bunk and landing on Blastbolt had made Bluestreak, Gunfire and Cobalt positively howl with laughter.

Cobalt himself once fell from his bunk onto the floor and stayed asleep, it wasn't till Crest got up late that night to use the bathroom did anyone notice and tuck him back in bed.

Cobalt himself was absolutely exhausted, being smaller and younger than than the others already meant he got tired quicker, but add the training into the equation and he was absolutely shattered.

Some nights he'd practically fall asleep while in the middle of some game or even reading and one of the others would have to carry him to his bunk.

They'd also lost all sense of bunk arrangements and pretty much slept in whatever bunk was the closest at the time, this resulted in a few odd sleeping partners and some confusing wake up calls.

Ando had almost smothered Ace when he'd rolled on top of him when they were sharing a bunk.

Bluestreak himself had been so tired he couldn't even find it in himself to chuckle when he found Cobalt leeched to his side for the third time that week.

For some reason the kid always managed to find his way into his bunk.

After two months the back to back simulations stopped only to be replaced by something far worse, individual testing.

Whatever brother had been called that day also looked terrified and sad when called and always returned looking beaten and tired.

There was an unspoken rule not to ask what happened, but simply be there when said brother returned.

It was no different when Cobalt was taken.

Everyone was on standby by the time an exhausted Cobalt stumbled his way into the barracks.

When Cobalt came back from testing he just looked like he wanted to sleep...for a week.

Most of the others were absolutely exhausted from their own tests and were slumped in bunks in pairs of ones or two's, but those that were able to managed to give him encouraging smiles.

It worked somewhat as Cobalt managed to twitch his lips into a smile and managed a small wave like to signal he was okay, only for both to drop a second later as though his limbs were made of lead, to Cobalt it felt like they were.

Bluestreak felt his body twitch in Cobalt's direction as the kid seemed to linger in the middle of the room as the chime for lights out went off.

Bluestreak wanted to go over to the kid, scoop him up in his arms and hug him, but he was held back by the Idea that Cobalt may not want him to.

Mentally he was begging the kid to come over to one of them so he knew someone would take care of the kid tonight.

But Cobalt stood still in the middle of the room twisting his fingers and biting his lip as he glanced around the room at all his brothers watching him.

Bluestreak watched all of this from where he lay in his bunk quietly seething at himself for not doing a damm thing.

All this time thinking about how he'd help Cobalt only to lie here like a useless lump when Cobalt actually made it back.

Cobalt made eye contact with Blastbolt who gave him an encouraging nod.

That seemed to give Cobalt whatever it was he needed permission for to finally begin moving from the middle of the room.

Looking both physically and mentally exhausted Cobalt walked over to Bluestreak's bunk.

The two stared at each other owlishly for a beat.

Cobalt then blinked a few times before looking at Blastbolt who gave him another nod.

Whatever that meant it seemed to finally get the kid to react by crawling into the bed without asking for permission first.

This was nothing new for any of them but Cobalt was always hesitant about going into other people's space.

Bluestreak lay there stunned as the kid made a little nest in the blankets and burrowed down into them like a cave creature.

He knew everyone's eyes were on him and the kid but he only had eyes for the lump of blanket that had just crawled into bed next to him.

"Cobalt?" Bluestreak asked looking at the blankets.

"Yeah." Cobalt replied, his voice rather muffled by the blankets on his head.

"You sure you want to sleep here tonight?" Bluestreak asked.

"Yep." Came the sleepy reply followed by a large yawn.

Bluestreak blinked and looked at Cobalt.

"Wouldn't you rather sleep with Blastbolt or Gunfire?" Bluestreak asked.

"Hmm, not tonight." Cobalt mumbled from somewhere under his nest.

Bluestreak heard some smothered giggles from the bunk the twins were sharing and made sure to shake a fist at them since there was no way Cobalt could see them through all those blankets on his head.

Mortar at least seemed to take some mercy on Bluestreak and the situation and he called out his goodnights to everyone before switching off the lights, a subtle yet not so subtle order for them to shut up and go to sleep.

With it dark Bluestreak felt less conscious about his new bedmate and relaxed back into the sheets, careful not to jostle the lump beside him.

It was a little hard to see in the dark but Bluestreak could see a small curled up figure somewhere among the nest and he could gear the sounds of soft, steady breathing from underneath.

Good, he hasn't suffocated yet.

"Cobalt." He tried keeping his voice as soft as possible so he didn't wake any other sleeping brothers.

"Yeah Bluestreak." Came the muffled reply.

"Are you sure you don't want to go sleep with one of the others?" Bluestreak asked.

"Yep." Cobalt replied simply.

"How come, I'm not exactly the most comforting, Blastbolt is far better than me in that department." Bluestreak said.

The blankets shifted as Cobalt shuffled closer to Bluestreak.

"You're safe." Cobalt replied.

"We're all safe, none of us would ever hurt you, not on purpose anyway, Ando is just a heavy sleeper." Bluestreak said slightly confused.

"No, I mean... you'll keep me safe, you said so yourself, as squad medic I'll strive my best to keep you all safe." Cobalt replied quoting what Bluestreak had told him a couple of weeks ago.

Bluestreak stared in suprise at those words, yes he said them and he definitely meant them but he didn't think Cobalt would take his words so seriously.

But at the same time Bluestreak felt his heart warm up at the fact he had, as well as the the fact that out of all nine of them Cobalt had specifically seeked him out when he could have suck out Blastbolt or one of the others.

Bluestreak's entire life was about fulfilling his duty and if it was also his duty to protect Cobalt then he would gladly do that for him.

"Alright vod'ika I'll keep you safe tonight." Bluestreak cooed in a very soft and gentle voice.

He then blinked in suprise as Cobalt's body snuggled closer under the blankets and effectively wedged himself into his side.

"You're also very warm." Cobalt added after a moment, not even the blankets could hide the sleepiness in his voice. "I like the warm, the labs were always so cold"

His voice then drifted off as his body uncurled from the tight ball he'd been pressed into, seconds later Bluestreak heard him give off a long yawn and Bluestreak felt him relax into a deep sleep.

Bluestreak risked a peek under the blanket and saw a content smile on Cobalt's face as he slept peacefully, his chest rising and falling as he breathed in his sleep.

Bluestreak smiled and placed the blankets back over Cobalt before curling up to him.

"Goodnight vod'ika, sweet dreams." Bluestreak said lying down gently and falling asleep a few moments later.
