fantastic little writeup of a piece of outsider art in a medium (Doom mods) i previously knew nothing about

Given its popularity, Doom is an oddly misunderstood and often mischaracterized game. While it was a cultural sensation around the time of its release in December 1993, helping to bring the massively popular first person shooter genre into being, there's so much about the actual experience of playing Doom that is missed when we only think about the game’s influence on the market. Much of Doom’s initial cultural impact was in how those people who traded floppies with each other of Doom's free "shareware" episode treated the game as some kind of mystery manifestation of an alternate reality. I sometimes imagine that it was spoken about in hushed tones, like the disturbing videocassette at heart of the horror classic The Ring. It was a totally new type of experience, and many people didn’t know how to deal with that. It was beyond a video game. It broke reality. And it was fucking scary. It's worth noting that the atmosphere of Doom is still not exactly like anything else, even today. Surreal, open-ended environments made from odd, nonlinear, multi-layered structures somehow still seem to fit together by some unknown logic. There’s a strangely organic marriage of different moods and influences as well, from Alien-influenced dirty sci-fi tech to Eldritch horror, from cheesy Metallica album covers to more complex psychological horror. The game is hyper violence, hyper intensity, hyper speeds, hyper darkness. These are mystery places, somewhere far from reality [...]

game review 6: mezzanine

mezzanine gave me an ANUERISM!! i have never been more confused in my life, but for some reason, i love it. i haven’t finished it yet, but i’m not even sure there’s an ending. part of me thinks it’s an incomplete game but part of me also thinks that i’m missing something.

review:

story: X/5, i can’t find a story. well, maybe a bit of one. again, confusing af!

visuals: 5/5, okay i have to give it this. a spectacular display of frutiger aero, which i’m a huge fan of. it is a beautiful and confusing game. it feels like a lucid dream.

characters: X/5, ain’t no characters in sight.

gameplay: 4/5, not to hard to control but takes a little getting used to.

overall: 9/20, 45%; okay this is a super low rating, but PLEASE play this!! i want to know if anyone can find an ending or anything of the sort! honestly i would recommend this game just to have the experience of playing it.

My solution for bloatware is this: by law you should hire in every programming team someone who is Like, A Guy who has a crappy laptop with 4GB and an integrated graphics card, no scratch that, 2 GB of RAM, and a rural internet connection. And every time someone in your team proposes to add shit like NPCs with visible pores or ray tracing or all the bloatware that Windows, Adobe, etc. are doing now, they have to come back and try your project in the Guy's laptop and answer to him. He is allowed to insult you and humilliate you if it doesn't work in his laptop, and you should by law apologize and optimize it for him. If you try to put any kind of DRM or permanent internet connection, he is legally allowed to shoot you.

With about 5 or 10 years of that, we will fix the world.

the fact that i'm no longer the same age as the protagonists of novels and films i once connected to is so heartbreaking. there was a time when I looked forward to turning their age. i did. and i also outgrew them. i continue to age, but they don't; never will. the immortality of fiction is beautiful, but cruel.
