MEGA MEGA ART DUMP (part 1)
Today's art dump is from an old notebook that we thought wAs gOnE fOrEvEr ...we found it in our car
It is shared with my sister and cousins, so its drawings are very random, of course
Tumblr media
Like this faint sketch of Spinel with a gun :D
I remember the notebook around 2021, so it'll of course have some drawings like—
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Camilo & Dolores from Disney Encanto! (Dolores suffered peer-erase-pressure, I couldn't get her face right ;v;)
Tumblr media
And Barney Pudowski from Ron's Gone Wrong! An animated movie that is CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED SERIOUSLY PLS GO WATCH IT
Anyway, here's some more fanart
Tumblr media
We got Mono and Six from My Little Nightmare! (They'll appear again in Part 2)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And my first attempt drawing one of the most difficult drawn characters from Helluva Boss (they'll also appear again)
NOW SOME ORIGINAL WORKS!!!
Tumblr media
This is just a random character I made, nothing too deep, I drew her according to the prompt from my sister seen on the top left corner, and the result is this sl#tty masquerade woman
THIS WOMAN THO–
Tumblr media Tumblr media
HOO! LADY!!!– another random charcater I made following my sister's prompt, Lady Aura, and she's just MUWAH that I just NEED to redraw her! My redraw is the right panel
Anyway, this was fun, so nostalgic, but we reached the photo limit

OLD SKETCHBOOK ART DUMP
Okay most of the shit in these are terrible. Genuinely just, bad. But y’know, you win and you lose.
My Gacha phase was strong in middle school sooo.. don’t judge 11 y/o me too much. I had to start somewhere okay? That somewhere happened to be edgy wolf angel hybrid forgotten child nonsense 😭
I liked to use song lyrics in my art (still do, actually) and I drew a lot of vent art. Some of that is included.
Don’t bully me. Let’s be proud that I’ve matured.
Theres a photo limit so I’m gonna have to reblog and add for every sketchbook/sketchbook adjacent.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Got through the tutorial and the first reactor mission, currently downloading the rest of the game so it'll let me play it, figured I'd give some first impressions.
Gameplay
The controls are decent for a mobile game, if a bit...jagged? Drag-to-move is a little wonky, turns are really slow, and there isn't always a visual cue to show that you've properly interacted with a target in battle.
I don't have a screenshot of it but I feel like the placement of the action icon outside of battle is poor; when walking around, it's really easy for me to have blocked it by accident. It's got too much padding to use the space between that icon and the edge of the screen for the drag controls when moving, but too far from the edge for me to avoid covering it up.
It gave me the tutorial on how to switch modes in battle to defend against big attacks after Barret had already been hit twice by the big attack in question.
It gave me the tutorial on combining limit breaks after both characters had already built up and used their limit breaks once earlier in the battle.
In the pre-game tutorial, the screen went black after I used the limit break and I had to restart the game, but that hasn't happened in the game proper. (Yet.)
Visuals
So far the graphics seem pretty good. Obviously they're fine in battle, that's repurposed Remake models, but outside of battle they're pretty solid. The running animation is a bit slippy for everyone, they've all got a bit of moonwalking going on (especially during cutscenes) but it's not too bad so far.
I don't actually like most of the character portraits so far. The art looks unfinished, if not outright sloppy, particularly on Wedge.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The most finished looking portrait is Barret's. Even Cloud looks kinda like a warmup someone threw color onto.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Overall I think my issue there is that the style is really inconsistent. Line weights are all over the place with no rhyme or reason, some people get more shading than others, the light source is literally incomprehensible.
System
Download speed is horrible. It doesn't matter what kind of connection I'm on, it gives me about 0.01% every couple seconds. I understand this is because the servers are very busy right now, but since it has to be connected all the time this is not a good precedent.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hopefully that improves because I have really good internet and a pretty nice phone and these were taken a full minute apart. I can now report that if I close and restart the game it runs a little faster for a while then all but stalls out. Not feeling that.
Edit: I can say with certainty now that the game crashes out every time it finishes loading something. It crashed out:
In the middle of the gacha tutorial when I pushed the "attempt" button
When I told it to download the whole game so it would stop having to do it every time I finish something
When it hit 100% on the progress bar for downloading the whole game
In the middle of the main menu tutorial when I pushed the "missions" button
It goes black or dumps me back to my homescreen and I have to restart the game. So that bodes really well for saving progress or actually getting the things that you're inevitably going to pay for.

Fate and Phantasms #96: The Count of Monte Cristo
Tumblr media
Today on Fate and Phantasms, we’re making the King of the Cavern, Edmond Danganron- sorry, the Count of Monte Cristo. Ol’ Eddy’s fast enough to leave afterimages, strong enough for those afterimages to also hit people and hurt them, and plenty of creepy darkness and fire based abilities.
Check out the Count’s build breakdown below the cut, or his character sheet over here!
Next up: Helloooo nurse!
Race and Background
This part isn’t that complicated. The Count is a human, and as a Variant Human he gets +1 to Constitution and Wisdom, as well as proficiency in one skill. Grab Acrobatics, because you’re fast and there’s other stuff we’re getting with your class stuff. You also get the Tough feat, giving you an extra 2 HP when you level up. Being the physical embodiment of hatred makes you pretty hard to stamp out.
I don’t think there’s a “wrongfully accused” variation of the Criminal background, so we’re making you a Haunted One instead; your stay in the Chateau d’If left a pretty big impression on you. This gives you Investigation and Survival proficiencies. You could also go Charlatan or Faceless if you want a more book-based Count, but we’re going with the gacha game version.
Ability Scores
Put your highest score into Wisdom. In older versions of D&D, wisdom saves were called will saves, and you’ve got an iron one. After that is Dexterity; you’re a speedy boy, and you’re hard to hit. Third is Constitution- your concentration saves should be instantly passed, and you’re even harder to kill than you are to hit. Intelligence is next, you’re pretty good at revenge schemes, but that’s a niche subject. Your Charisma isn’t that great, but you don’t get directly involved in social situations that often. Finally, dump Strength. You’re actually really strong, but we’re using dexterity for damage, so we don’t need this stat.
Class Levels
1. Monk 1: You’re fast and you punch people, and you’ve also spent a lot of time contemplating your place in life in the Chateau d’If. Most of that matches up with a monk well, and a more chaotic character might call a monastery a prison, if you’re really stretching for this to fit 100%. As a monk you get Unarmored Defense, giving you an AC based on your Dexterity and Wisdom so you can fight in a sick chapeau, or a sick Chateau, if you haven’t escaped yet. Speaking of fighting, you can use your fists thanks to your Martial Arts. This lets you use Dexterity instead of Strength for unarmed attacks and damage, your unarmed attacks deal 1d4 damage instead of 1, and you can make an unarmed attack as a bonus action after you attack as an action.
2. Fighter 1: You’re not just a speedy punch boy, you’re the speediest punchiest boy, going so fast we can skip 10 levels of monk progression in 1 level of fighter. The Unarmed Fighting fighting style means your fists now do 1d6 damage minimum, or 1d8 if you’re not wielding any weapons or shields (which you shouldn’t be). You can also deal 1d4 damage to grappled creatures each turn, but that probably won’t come up. You like to stay mobile. You also gain a Second Wind, letting you spend a bonus action to heal yourself. You can kinda control time, so there’s no bad moment for a smoke bre- and Guda’s gotten themselves trapped in a dream again.
3. Druid 1: Three classes in three levels? It’s more likely than you think. I know the Count doesn’t turn into a dog, you’ll just have to trust me on this one for now. First level druids learn Druidic, it’s a language, and also how to cast and prepare Spells using Wisdom as your casting ability. Your biography snippets mention you have “poisonous fire”, and I’m not sure how that would work in D&D, so grab Produce Flame and Poison Spray to get poison and fire attacks. For first level spells, Longstrider and Jump will improve your mobility despite your dumped strength, and Protection from Evil and Good is a good way to protect your iron will by preventing you (or a target creature) from being charmed, frightened, or possessed by aberrations, celestials, elementals, fey, fiends, and undead. Those creatures also have disadvantage on their attacks against you. The men who betrayed you were probably human in FGO, but who knows what curveballs your DM will throw at you.
4. Druid 2: With the Circle of the Stars, you can still use your Wild Shape as an action to transform into a non-flying, non-swimming beast of CR 1/4 or less, or you can assume a Starry Form as a bonus action; both options still can only be used twice per short rest. Your starry form sheds light 10′ away brightly, and another 10′ of dim light. You also pick one of three constellations that form on your body, granting you additional benefits. The Archer lets you use your bonus action (including when you transform) to make a ranged spell attack, dealing radiant damage. The Chalice causes you to be able to heal yourself or another when you cast a healing spell. The Dragon gives you Refined Talent with Intelligence and Wisdom checks, as well as Concentration saves. While in this form, you can’t roll less than a 10 on them. So yes, you do canonically have the weird glowing lights from your scarf now.
You also make a Star Map, which comes with its own benefits. You know Guidance and Guiding Bolt while you hold the map, and you can cast the latter a number of times per day equal to your proficiency bonus without spending a spell slot. It also acts as your spellcasting focus, and can be replaced with an hour long ceremony, which can be done during a rest.
5. Fighter 2: If you were playing a single class, this would be the level you get an extra attack on. Instead, you get an Action Surge, letting you add an extra action to one of your turns once per short rest. It’s kind of like an extra attack, but less frequent, and much better when you get a regular extra attack.
6. Fighter 3: You’ve finally gone so fast and so hard that your afterimage can punch people! At least, that’s the justification I have for picking up the Echo Knight subclass. As an Echo Knight, you can Manifest Echo to create a copy of yourself near you that has an AC of 14 plus your proficiency bonus and 1 HP. It can move up to 30′ each turn, and has to stay within 30′ of you or be destroyed. As a bonus action, you can teleport, switching places with your echo. Each attack made with your attack action can come from either you or your echo, and you can make opportunity attacks with the echo as well. You can also Unleash Incarnation for an extra attack from your echo when you take the attack action. You can use this feature a number of times per long rest equal to your Constitution modifier.
So we went from two attacks per turn at level 4 to a maximum of five attack in a turn at level 6. You can’t keep that up for long, but I doubt you’ll have to at this point.
7. Monk 2: Remember that class we started as? I think it’s time we went back to that one. At second level, you get Ki Points equal to your monk level, which you can currently spend to make two attacks, dodge, disengage, or dash as a bonus action. You also get Unarmored Movement, increasing your running speed by 10 feet. I’ve been talking about how fast you are this entire build, it’s about time we made good on that.
8. Monk 3: You literally live in Guda’s shadow, so this subclass is almost a given. Shadow monks can learn Shadow Arts, letting you cast Darkness, Darkvision, Pass without Trace, and Silence without material components for 2 ki points a pop. You also learn Minor Illusion. Third level monks can also Deflect Missiles, reacting to ranged attacks to block and throw them back at enemies. Thanks to Tasha’s you can also make Ki-Fueled Attacks. If you spend a ki point as part of your action, you can still attack with your bonus action. You’re a busy man, so you’ll have to make the most out of every turn.
9. Monk 4: Finally, your first Ability Score Improvement pops up at level 9. Use this to become Resilient in Constitution saves, gaining proficiency in them and increasing your constitution by 1 point. Combined with your Dragon constellation, this means you’ll automatically pass any concentration save caused by less than 34 damage. Having an iron will comes in handy sometimes! You can also Slow Fall, reducing damage taken by falling based on your monk level.
10. Monk 5: Five levels after most players, you finally get your Extra Attack, letting you make two attacks with each attack action. Combined with your Action Surge, Unleash Incarnation, and Martial Arts, you can now attack 8 times in a single round, albeit once per short rest. To put it in context, that’s about as many times as a level 20 fighter, also using their action surge.
The fun doesn’t stop there! Fifth level monks also can make Stunning Strikes using ki. When you hit a creature, you can spend one ki point to force a Constitution saving throw with a DC of 8 plus your proficiency bonus plus your wisdom modifier or be stunned until the end of your next turn. You get advantage on all attacks against stunned creatures, so... that’s going to hurt. You can also use a Focused Aim to improve your accuracy on attacks by spending even more ki points.
11. Fighter 4: One last level of fighter gives us another ASI, which will increase our Dexterity for a higher AC and stronger punches.
12. Druid 3: Third level druids get second level spells, like Darkvision or Pass Without Trace, so you can save your ki points for stunning strikes. You can also use Enhance Ability to push yourself even further.
13. Druid 4: At this level, your Wild Shape improves, so you can now transform into beasts of CR 1/2 or lower, and you can swim as well, if you really want to. But you also get another ASI, which makes you Shadow Touched. This increases your Wisdom by one point, and you learn Invisibility and Disguise Self, both using Wisdom to cast. One of your Noble Phantasms, the Monte Cristo Mythologie, can hide your Class from others. It would probably be more literally implemented with Nystul’s Magical Aura, but Disguise Self is a much more practical spell for you.
You can cast either one of these spells once per long rest for free, or like any regular spell with the appropriate spell slot.
You also get more fire power with the Create Bonfire cantrip.
14. Druid 5: Fifth level druids get third level spells. There’s a lot of cool stuff you can do now, but we’re mostly here for Revivify. Your third Noble Phantasm, Attendre, Esperer, gives you amazing recovery abilities, even bringing people back from the verge of death. Reviving people within a minute after their death is as close as we’re going to get here.
15. Monk 6: Your movement speed increases by another 5 feet now, and thanks to Ki-Empowered Strikes, your unarmed attacks are magical as far as resistances are concerned. As a shadow monk, you can also Shadow Step with your bonus action, teleporting up to 60′ between shadows. Doing this also grants you advantage on your next attack.
16. Monk 7: Seventh level monks get Evasion, letting you take no damage when you succeed on dexterity saves, and half damage when you fail. You also gain a Stillness of Mind, letting you end charming or frightening effects on yourself as an action. Your wisdom save is pretty solid, but it never hurts to have backup.
17. Monk 8: Use this ASI to round out your Constitution and Wisdom for more health, stronger spells, and a better AC.
18. Monk 9: Ninth level monks get an Unarmored Movement Improvement, letting you run up walls or over water with your normal movement speed. Just make sure you hit dry land before you stop, it’s not fun otherwise.
19. Monk 10: Tenth level monks have a Purity of Body that makes them immune to disease and poison, and you’re kind of the same. You’re already 99% revenge; you don’t have any space for more impurities.
Also you get another 5′ of movement.
20. Monk 11: Your capstone level grants you a Cloak of Shadows, allowing you to turn invisible as an action in dim light or darker. You remain invisible until you make an attack, cast a spell, or enter bright light. It’s not quite melding into shadows, but it certainly isn’t bad.
Also, in case you were wondering, your Martial Arts die bumps up to a d8 at this level, so you’d finally be as strong as you were at level 2 if we didn’t go into fighter now.
Pros:
A regular monk would have focused more on dexterity and had more accurate attacks, but we make up for that with the sheer number of punches we can throw at once. If you want something stunned, it’s basically guaranteed at this point. This also makes you a solid burst attacker: 8d8+24 damage is nothing to sneeze at.
Also unlike a regular monk, you’re really fucking tough to kill. With an AC of 17 and enough HP to give fighters a run for their money, physical attackers will find it hard to cut you down. On top of that, you’re pretty good against the three most common spell saves (Dexterity, Wisdom, and Constitution), and your evasion makes it so spellcasters will also have their work cut out for them.
You’re absurdly good at Concentration when you need to be. With your dragon constellation up, you can instantly shrug off any concentration save that is caused by less than 40 Damage. Basically, anything that isn’t a rogue or a beholder won’t be able to shake your buffs off an ally.
Cons:
Monks eat up their ki points quickly, and you’re no exception. This also applies to your Action Surge, spell slots, Starry Form, and Unleash Incarnation uses. You’re very, very impressive in combat, but only for a choice few rounds. If you use those up, it’s going to be a slog. A slog you’ll probably survive, but a slog.
Being a star druid makes you a literal light in the darkness. While that is a beautiful metaphor, it does make using the rest of your stealthy dark-focused build effectively. You can’t shadow step when you’re a walking lightbulb, sorry.
Despite your overall defensive strength, you have a few key weaknesses, like your charisma and intelligence saves. You won’t be much help in if you’re shot to another dimension by spellcasters, or against mindflayers in general.

Oh god this was longer then expected
Some General Background
So The Isle of Light was Originally the Black Forest A Place of Freedom and Expression for all who lead lives who Needed to hide Such and Some Such was The Coven of the Black Forest made up of 3 sisters (not biologically also there was a 4th) they all found comfort and love with each other one being the Princess of the Kingdom nearby (The 4th and Littlest one) She had a fiancé who was Mad with a Lust for power and Control over things he Didn’t need power and control over He Treated the Littlest one Cruelly when the other 3 Decided enough was enough when he did...SOMETHING to Part of the Forest so Horrible it turned Dead and Cruel (Subtle Subtle Hint Hint Wink) When all 3 Of them saw the Ruin They went so mad they turned to Darkness and fought him and all his Manmade monstrosities there when the Princess Arrived there was so much Dark energy everywhere it was Bad like Real Bad So with her friends now monsters she Fought them with a heavy heart her heart broke so much she fell afterwards immediately Unintentionally Sending her Kingdom to somewhere nobody knows where she is though...That’s an even bigger question BUT the story would live on as a Weilder of the key blade who slayed 3 evil witches...(Oh yeah did I mention Crowley knows And that’s Why He Let the Girls Attend because he thought they might be the Black Forest Coven Reincarnated And the Prophecy that when they Awakened the “Keys to their Hearts once more” They’d Free The Princess From her Mirror Prison Oh Yeah also the princess DID Die But her Reincarnation Goes inside a Mirror and is trapped there when she turns 17 and Doesn’t leave until she dIES ALSO ITS HIS OLDEST DAUGHTER THIS TIME ALSO YES HE HAS 2 DAUGHTERS...Okay lemme just calm down..Also yeah she thought of the Princess System) but After a Wish got safe haven for all Keyblade Weilders (I have KH Oc’s other then these don’t ask Longer story they live and basically founded Fortana Haven) I guess the Isle of Light Rose from the Shadow Realm to be just that oh yeah also the Isle of light is literally that kingdom if ya didn’t know
Fortana Haven
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Some Love Nikki BGs for Visualization if I’m Wrong about this from being from Love Nikki Correct me pls and if this is your art sorry and I’ll take it down)
Okay this Place Basically a Modern Fairytale Everything is so Rustic~ but they Have Cafe’s and Stuff~ They’re still very much in Development as a City..or town..or whatever Boss of everything Locket Clover (An OG KH OC) Runs Everything Wonderfully she welcomes everything with open arms and If you wanna run a shop or want a Building for a particular Thing or Activity she’s Pretty open to the idea unless it’s Incredibly Dumb But she will make you get The Wood and Supplies and The Bricks and the Brick Stick Sauce or whatever it’s called she might get give you help constructing but dang is she a firm believer in “DIY” but I like how she’s Determined to Have a Good Balance between Industrial and Rural In fact there is a Mall (God knows how it got there) And that’s pretty much all there is for your Juicy Capitalism Fix She Runs “Hope Stir” Workshop according to Her boyfriend Ephmer It was always Called a workshop but for the longest time she did EVERYTHING Subtle Farmwork And Animal Husbandry ACTUAL Workshop things all cause she wanted to help every Weilder she knew out and made sure they had a place for food and such She is a bit of a Moneyholic but when you’ve been doing what she’s been doing I bet you’d be too overall While it doesn’t have much History yet Fortana Haven (4-Tana is how you say it btw) Is truly well a Haven

Sorry if you've been asked this explicitly before, but what are your thoughts on Penguin Logistics, specifically in comparison to the other organisations/factions in Arknights? I recently started and managed to grab everyone within a few pulls, except Sora (and I guess Mostima, unfortunately.) and I think they're easily my favourites. Would love to hear your thoughts. Cheers.
No one's ever asked me that, but they probably should have since I've gone all-in on Penguin Logistics ever since I pulled Exusiai and Croissant early on. I then proceeded to never pull any of the others, forcing me to buy Texas and Sora in the shop and much later dump all of my accumulated gacha currency getting Mostima. Anyway, my goal in life is to use the entire team and also max them all out. PL4life!
Tumblr media
Anyway, my initial impression of them was that they were the cast of a 90s anime like Cowboy Bebop or Bubblegum Crisis (...Tokyo 2040). Like, they're an eclectic band of hyper-competent misfits working for a small company operating at the edge of the law. “Penguin Logistics” itself sounds like a euphemism for being, like, smugglers or something. "We'll get your package where it needs to go, no questions asked." Then Code of Brawl came out and I was totally right except they are also very dumb in a funny way. Like, they accidentally got into a turf war with the mafia, but apparently that's just business as usual.
Anyway I want to talk about each of them individually now so apologies if this starts rambling.
Tumblr media
Texas is pretty clearly the main character of Penguin Logistics, and you can tell because she's the hub of their whole relationship wheel on the in-game chart.
She's also kinda Spike from Cowboy Bebop, although less laid-back I guess. She's a former mafia assassin on the run from her past, but her past won't leave her alone. Incidentally, "mafia" in this case refers to the various wolf families from the fantasy Italy equivalent in this setting, although they make some interesting comparisons to wolf packs in the profiles. However, Texas's family is dead, which should make her a "lone wolf" that will supposedly never have another place to belong. Except PL itself is proof that that's wrong.
Theoretically she’s just the team’s driver, but because PL is always getting into ridiculous anime fights she’s also good at that part too, using dozens of little... lightsabers(?) that she throws around willy nilly. It would probably look super-cool to see in action, except this is not that kind of game so we’ll just have to wait for the anime or whatever. It’s noted in her profile that her fighting style shows that she unconsciously sees as the only purpose of a weapon as being to kill, and heck, she’s right.
Tumblr media
She's cool-headed, adaptable, and the serious one you can always count on, but she's not above getting into friendly(?) brawls just to take out her frustrations out.
Her name comes from the extinct subspecies of Texas Wolf.
Tumblr media
Next up is Exusiai, the angel who loves nothing more than guns, god, rock and roll, and apple pie. In that order. In other words, a stereotypical American. Even though she's from the fantasy-Vatican. Basically she's a cheerful, friendly, laid-back person who never really fit in back home where people are expected to be more serious and orderly. Not enough to be, like, shunned or anything but she's always been a weirdo. All angels have guns though, that’s like standard issue. She wishes she could have more though.
She's also super religious, but interestingly never brings it upon her own. I feel like she probably realizes how uncomfortable it can make people who don't share that religion to suddenly bring up Jesus all the time in casual conversation. Like, she's not ashamed of it or anything, but she won't shove it in your face either. Personally, I find that a pretty cool characterization for a fictional religious person.
Which is also sort of a hint that beneath her goofy exterior she's a thoughtful, deliberate person who doesn’t let anyone in by accident. Texas notes that they're exact opposites in this respect. She also has an extremely interesting relationship with the next person.
Her name comes from the Greek word for the order of angels in Christianity often translated as "Powers."
Tumblr media
Mostima... where to start...? I guess first of all she’s a fallen angel, apparently because she pointed her gun at her own kind under MYSTERIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES. Probably related to the whole war in Kazdel thing, where many of the other MYSTERIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES in this game took place. Long story short, stuff happened in the war, she pointed her gun at another angel, Exusiai’s sister is dead under mysterious circumstances, and Mostima gave up her gun and now wanders the world delivering long-distance packages for PL. But that’s mostly an excuse for to be alone as much as humanly possible. She can also use time magic because I dunno why not. MYSTERIOUS.
She’s friendly enough, talkative even, and has a hobby of visiting new places and trying out the local food, etc, but her real defining trait is that she just doesn’t need other people. She’s explicitly aromantic, saying she has no interest in love, but she also has no need for friends or family or apparently coworkers either. Because of the way the world is, she spends most of her time driving through the endless wastelands between cities, with nothing but a truck, some packages, and her thoughts. There’s something... romantic about that (in the other sense of the word), but even she admits that the romance of watching the sun set in a desert with no one else around for hundreds of kilometers gets old after a while.
Tumblr media
I feel like I should note that she has a very “best friend of her big sister” relationship with Exusiai, by which I mean she’s known Exusiai since Exusiai was a kid and to her Exusiai will always be that kid. Also Exusiai only joined PL in the first place to hunt her down and get answers about her sister’s death, but Mostima just laughs it off and leaves town for another year or five.
Her name is probably a corruption of Mastema, a rather infamous fallen angel in mythology.
Tumblr media
Croissant is... well, to be honest everyone past this point is more of a minor character. Which is actually a weird thing to say since none of these people are actually major characters in Arknights, but I guess these are less important people even within the group?
Croissant’s gimmick is that she’s always trying to make money by selling stuff. I guess she’s a merchant? But not, like, a formal one who runs a shop, she just gets her hands on stuff through her connections and sells it. But in like, a friendly down-to-earth way, it’s even said that she lives paycheck to paycheck. She’s a girl trying to get by with a second job, I guess is what I’m saying.
Team-wise, she’s the muscle of the group, being a minotaur and all. She lifts the heavy packages and also smashes things with her MAGNETIC HAMMER which I don’t know why I find that name so amusing. Gameplay-wise her special move can knock all the enemies around her halfway across the map and I smile every time she does it.
Her profile notes that she’s really just living her best life as a normal-ish person, and that helps make everyone around her feel normal, and that’s important in a setting where half the people around you are dying of magical cancer (no one in PL is Infected though).
Her name comes from the French word for Crescent and also a type of Pastry. Leaning more towards Pastries in my opinion.
Tumblr media
Sora is an idol singer. Because, to be perfectly honest, what ragtag band of misfits is complete without an idol singer? She can’t really fight, but I guess Texas must have saved her life at some point or something because she bullied both her agency and PL into letting her work there part time. And also she is obsessed with Texas. I guess saying it like that makes her sound kind of annoying, but she really isn’t, she’s just an earnest girl chasing her dreams.
There’s also this interesting thing where a lot of her basic information is censored by her agency in order to protect her privacy (”do not dox the idol”). Even including her race. She presents as a wolf, but her promoted E2 art has her as a rabbit, which raises some interesting questions that don’t really get answered.
Her name comes from the Japanese word for Sky.
Tumblr media
Lappland is not really part of PL, but she’s PL-adjacent enough to be worth mentioning here. Basically she’s an old acquaintance of Texas from back in their mafia days, and she’s obsessed with hunting her down and... fighting her? Killing her? But in, like, a sexual way? She’s kind of a crazy psychopathic killer. Maybe. She can also be very calm and polite when she wants to be, although with a taste for gallows humor. That just makes her scarier because you don’t know when/if she’ll snap.
There are two kind-of explanations for her being like that: A) her family is dead and she has no “pack”. As a wolf, the stress of living without a pack is supposed to be maddening. B) She’s infected with Oripathy (magic cancer) and there are crystals growing in her nervous system. Which... can’t be good. The answer is probably a combination of both.
But the most important thing about Lappland is her base skill and how it interacts with Texas. Basically, in your base there are various jobs you can assign people to and different characters get different bonuses for them. Most people in Penguin Logistics get bonuses for working the Trading Depot, for obvious reasons. Lappland gets a “bonus” where if she’s in the depot at the same time as Texas, she loses morale slower but doesn’t actually get any bonus to productivity. Meanwhile, Texas gets a bonus to productivity when Lappland is around, but loses morale way faster. In other words, Lappland is slacking off and making Texas so uncomfortable that she works twice as hard just to get the job over with so she can leave. This is their relationship as defined by game mechanics.
Texas also has another bonus where she loses morale slower if Exusiai is there, which completely cancels out the penalty she gets from Lappland. In other worlds, Exusiai being there too calms her nerves enough that she doesn’t feel the need to immediately escape.
Tumblr media
Oh yeah, I forgot to talk about Emperor, who’s the owner of Penguin Logistics. He’s a world-famous rapper wearing a Tupac shirt and also literally immortal.

carphyyyy im sure others hav asked this bt what should i keep 8n mind when i start arknights
The info there isn’t always accurate but gamepress is a good place to check if you need to know anything.
Rerolling your first 10 rolls is very easy and fast and I highly recommend doing it in case there are specific units you want early.
In every new “summon” banner, you are guaranteed to get at least one 6-star or 5-star operator within your 10 first rolls (and you can roll individually), so even if a banner doesn’t have anyone you really want, you can at least roll one by one until you get your guaranteed rare operator at every banner.
Whenever you play a map, everyone in your current squad gains “trust points”, even if they aren’t really placed during the fight. Increasing their trust gives them permanent stats bonuses (up to 100% trust), and unlocks new lore and voice lines (up to 200% trust).
You can trade your originite prime directly for originium (thingie to roll the gacha), Sanity, Pro Packs or skins -- save your originite prime for Pro Packs instead of trading it for originium directly, as each of them become available at the shop at certain levels and they give exactly the same amount of originium you’d get for trading directly PLUS a lot of other stuff. If you are not planning to waste money on the game like me, you can save some for skins. Originite prime also becomes extremely valuable later on to recover sanity...so basically trading it directly for originium is a waste on the long run (I did it anyway because “HAHA GACHA GOES BRRR”)
Operators from all rarities are useful, and a lot of the ones who seem weak at first have valuable niche usages. Some low rarity operators have saved whales even during end-game content, at least in the english server.
There are two types of damage: physical (your damage is basically “attack minus enemy defense”) and magical/Arts (your damage is reduced by a percentage, which is equal to the enemy’s RES) and you should have operators able to do both types of damage.
The way upgrading your units work is: you feed them exp items until they reach a certain level cap, then you use certain items to promote them (most operators can be promoted at least once). Skills are upgraded separately.
The 6-stars and 5-stars operators are extremely costly to upgrade and promote to full potential compared to the others, even if they reap more benefits when you eventually do. As a new player you should probably be focusing on upgrading good 3-stars like Kroos and Melantha, although if you get some broken rare units you might want to dump resources on them. You can check tier lists but take everything with a grain of salt.
Some of the “top tier” units are good from the start and you just promote them for stats and such, while others require a lot of investment before they unleash their true potential.
As you progress in the story you will unlock your base, where you can produce a ton of resources and operators have non-combat skills that help you there. It’s good to look up base guides and operators base skills to invest there early as your investment there eventually pays itself.
Last thing is to just have fun and go at your own pace. While events obviously have limited time, the story maps are very forgiving and give nearly all your sanity back if you fuck up and decide to quit. There a few stages with “difficulty spikes” and they basically revolve around you being smart and learning to use a mechanic you’ve been ignoring.

Meet the Adopticans (Edited)
Hello you all. The Mod here. I thought about a complete new start of this blog. So I wanted to introduce all of my characters to you so you know them all a bit better before asking questions. I also wanted to say that I, for the next time, only will draw on post it notes and will upload photos of them here on Tumblr. I will still answer the questions in my inbox but they have still to wait a little bit longer. Sorry for the waiting time. I also will not do a frequent upload rate like I said a few posts ago. I noticed if I have a fix date to upload something, I will go in a hiatus instead. I don´t want this to happen so I upload my drawings when I done them in my pase.
Now no more talking. Lets meet the citizens of Adoptica.
First to start the list is the chaos trio. Rain Dancer, Rainy Storm and Spheal Fighter.
Tumblr media
Rain Dancer: This little fellow is the one who made this Blog possible in the first place. Even though he is a pegasus, he never flies higher than a few feet. He has a talent for getting in trouble. He is keeping his friends busy getting him out of dangerous situations he got himself into. From little things like a flower pot falling on his head to being chased by timberwolves through town. His friends even started to develope a color based alarm system only for him. There is rarly a week where he does not have a dump problem on his hooves.
He also is a little childhead. Always seeing the world with bright child eyes and never seemingly never thinking about consequences. Always being happy and trying to make everyone happy.
Tumblr media
Rainy Storm: He is no one else than Rain Dancer only from the future. He somehow traveled 2 years in the past and now lives with his present self and all the other ones trying to help with the daily chaos and the little adventures they all get into because of his present self. But even though he is Rain Dancer he changed a lot in the coming two years. He got a barely noticed asshole attitude and learned to stand for himself. He isnt the quiet shy pegasus everyone knows from the present Rain Dancer. He is always acting strange like he does have a secret he don´t want anyone to know.
To prevent confusions with him and his present self he overdrew his cuitiemark with the symbol of a sword and wants to be called Rainy Storm.
He also is unable to touch his present self because it would tear a hole in time and space. (Timetravels are crazy)
Tumblr media
Spheal Fighter: He is another Rain Dancer but out of another dimension. He was forced to travel through seemingly countless dimensions by a horrible curse before he landed in Adoptica. His real name isn´t Spheal Fighter but he never told someone about his real name after he changed his name to Spheal Fighter. His curse is forcing him to travel through different dimensions every time he dies. Normally he would only get a few days before meeting his inevitable fate. But this time he got a much longer stay. He is already two months in this world and he isn´t complaining about it. But he still hopes to get back home one day. He also have no cutiemark and does not think he will get one because he does not belong in this world.
Tumblr media
Bloody Chocolate: He is the best Friend of Rain Dancer and a real movie geek. There is almost no movie he has not seen by now. He has a DvD store in town and is the first on pony to ask about any suggestions for such stuff. His special talent is, of course, movie based. If a spell is in a movie. He can recreate it. He hates it when someone ruffles through his mane but he gave up on trying to stop Rain from doing it.
Tumblr media
Noms: He is a pony changeling hybrid. Half pony and half changeling. His mother was a pony and his father was a changeling drone which left them before he was born because he had to return to the hive. He does not know much about his fathers kind. Only the things his mother told him about them. He is capable of transforming in other ponys. Only into ponys though. He also feeds on emotions. But not on love like a normal changeling. He feeds on tensions. He can´t controle the tension eating. He automatical does it. If the tension is of an angry nature, he most likely throws up. He also can eat normal food but he don´t do it really often because of his easy to amberrase friend Rain Dancer. He also is a little prankster and uses his changeling magic often to prank his friends. Besides his tranforming spell he only knows the levitation spell.
Tumblr media
Vila Greenheart: She is the majormare of Adoptica and born to be a real leader. A mare which does not fear to fight for her visions and her citizens. She is skilled in the art of sword fighting and is willed to defend her city with raw power if needed. She also counts to the friends of Rain Dancer and gives her best to clean after him when he again desolated the town on one of his chases with a creature of the everfree. She cares a lot about Rain. He isn´t ready to live on his own in her point of view. She hopes that he will not kill himself by accident in the future with his bad luck.
Tumblr media
Rolling Dice: He is the born Pan and paper player and the number one to asked if he could do the game master in a sesion. He is famous in all of Adoptica for his long and awesome Ogers and Ogliettes rounds. A roleplay session is only complete with him around. It is like you are really in the game when he starts to tell the story of the adventures.
Tumblr media
Swampy Tree: He is the owner of the T(r)ea  House. It is the local hot spot to meet your friends and to drink a nice cup of tea. Only a few citizens, including Rain and all his friends, are knowing about his secret storage he has beneath his shop. His eyes are completly stained in a light blue color and his hair is literaly moss which is growing on his head. His eyes, hair and tail are all side effects of previous experiments with potential ingredients for his magic teas. Which he is storing in his secret storage. He is searching in the everfree for magic ingredients from time to time to expand his secret magic sortiment. He also is kinda the father figure of the most ponys in town. Espacially to Rain, Bloody, Noms and one other guy. He always has good advice and his own ways of finding out what is wrong or even to punish bad behavior.
Tumblr media
Linked Claw: This fellow is a wolf pony unicorn. No one knows where he comes from. One day he just appeared in Adoptica and soon found himself caught up in some dangerous situations with Rain Dancer. He than befriended him and helped him from time to time with his bad luck streaks. His special talent is lifelink magic. This is one reason to not get him pissed. Why he is half wolf is still a secret to everyone. The only thing he ever told someone about his past is that he was a normal unicorn once.
Tumblr media
Gacha Ball: She is a always happy pony. Always there for everyone when they feel down and the best in keeping secrets besides Swampy. She loves a good hug and has a real hoove for those Gacha machines in town. She always gets what she ants out of them. She is the one to which everyone goes to when they feel bad or just need some down time.
Tumblr media
Tapestry String: He is a tailor and is mostlikely making cosplays and custumes but he does normal clothing too. He always says „The crazier the better.“. He also ids a good friend of Rolling Dice. Because of his friend he met Rain Dancer and his crew in the first place. Even though he barely has contact with someone else of the crew besides Rolling Dice he got invited to take part in this Blog thing. He thought „Why not give it a try. Can be get funny to get to know the others better. What could possible go wrong?“
Tumblr media
Shimmy Semibreve: She is just a little filly which got already her cutiemark. Proud carrying the title of Rain Dancers „little Sister of honor“. This little filly caught a big place in the chaotic pegasus heart. Always being like the little sister he never had and always telling him what to do to stay save. Even if they are not real siblings, the roles are reversed in their relationship. She is always watching over her „Big Brother“. No matter how much older he may be. Over the course of time they got a real tight bond. But the quirky friendship they share is the most funny thing in her life so far. She always gets everyone to explore the world new every day. She keeps the fresh and pure wind of childhood whirling through everyponys heart.
Tumblr media
Blank Page: This always dressed fellow is a bit old school and special. While he always tries to be kind and charming, he gets a bit naiv every now and then. His passion is poesie. Sadly he isn´t that successfull with it. But this isn´t bringing him down. He spends so many time at his desk, writing new poems, that he catches himself sometimes rhyming in a normal conversation. This Character was designed by a good friend of mine. He/She is called Alex.
Tumblr media
Zesk´o: He is a Zebra from out of Equestria. Driven into new lands by his need to explore and be an adventurer. Always open for new stuff no matter what it is. He does not care if it might be dangerous or disgusting. The more experiences he gather the better. The only real bad habit of him is his need to sleep really long. It seems that between  his long naps and breakfast is almost no time for something else and yet he is always energetic to do new stuff when he is awake. Rain Dancer and his friends are one reason why he settled down in Adoptica. There is always something happening. Something fun and new. No day is like the other.

Dappervolk General Survey – Results!
View the comprehensive final results here! | Dappervolk Official Tumblr
See results (find out what race others want to be, what they’re excited about, etc!), answers to questions, and my thoughts under the cut!
I’m not really sure why I decided to do an infographic (especially since 1. I’m not a designer by any means and 2. I’ve never done one before), but originally I thought it would be cool and then I started second-guessing myself and just finished it out anyway (sorry for the obvious issues, I kind of gave up at the end lul). The infographic has only highlights. Below are more highlights and thoughts:
Highlights:
Race: 34% Animal | 24% Galactic | 18% Undecided | 16% Elf | 9% Human
Heard About DV: 34% Tumblr | 25% Recommendation | 20% Another pet/game site. **** I do have to mention, I added the option to pick Pet Simmer Julie as a referrer after I published the survey, and a few people mentioned they chose “other” instead of that option, so that % would actually be higher.
Features Most Excited About: 78% Avatars | 72% Everything | 60% Pets | 57% Quests. **** Write ins: “basically everything”, art community, the great staff, custom pets, seeing people from other sites
Features Most Confused About: 42% “Nothing” |  24% Guilds | 22% Adventuring | 20% Gacha Shops | 19% Sitewide Events
>Write in Questions: 1.) “Will new pet/avatar clothing be released often/every now and then?” | From the looks of it, yes! With every new town, at least, there will be new pets and tons of new clothes per NPC. Also, there will be seasonal sets/giveaways I’m sure, as well as monthly premium clothes (such as fancy undies).
2.) “if you have to choose one set of features horns/animal ears and be stuck with them and can only layer on second sets but can’t take them off??” | All the animal features are more or less “accessories” for your avatar; you could actually remove all of them (your ears/tail) if you wanted to. You will also apparently be able to trade the starter items with others, and there’s talks of a starter shop where you can get the other ears/tails I believe? But they will not be permanently clipped to the base, no!
3.) “The Currency/Economy, Subscription Costs? Value for Money? Longevity or Future Add on Contents?” | This is hard to answer (at least for me, as a bystander/player)because the site is so new and we really don’t know what to expect, and we will be creating the economy. I think there will always be money circling through, however, due to the gacha shops aspect. Also, premium currency can’t be traded (though the items you buy with them can), which adds an interesting layer to the economy (regular site currency stays king). Once premium costs are released we can better determine the “value for money” (I don’t think they’re determined yet). As far as longevity, there’s apparently lots more world to explore and lots more maps to be added, and with the Guilds and Housing/Adventure features coming up, there will be events and continual things to do on site.
Main Goal: 34% Avatar | 18% Pet Collection | 13% Affection/Stats | 11% Art
Care About ID?: 32% No | 26% Yes (2 dig) | 26% Yes (2 or 3 dig) | 17% Yes (special) Care About Username?: 61% Yes | 36% Sorta | 3% No
If you have any thoughts or anything to add, I’d love to hear what you have to say! I hope making surveys and posts like this doesn’t bother anyone too much. I do have a few other ideas for future surveys/quizzes/info dumps, so look forward to those in the future! :)

The Art of Re-rolling

WHAT! Why the hell would I wanna do that 808Rootz?!?!
Re-rolling accounts is a method used by Free2Play players (also known as F2P) in gacha style games like UL to start with good gear from spawns on your account. This will give you a solid foundation of new spawn items to build on. There are however other reasons to re-roll accounts. One of those reasons is to learn from mistakes you likely made when playing the game for the first time and learning as you go, often too late. You may also have opened an account, stopped playing the game for whatever reason and then at some point decided to play the game again. Depending how long of a hiatus you had away from the game, the spawn pulls you have on the account could be outdated with the current meta and/or severely outclassed by newer items in current spawns.
When I originally started playing UL in 2016, I personally made many mistakes with gear and cost allocation, among other things when I was a lowly noob. I also took a hiatus of several months away from the game and experienced all of the reasons given above minus the first one because RNGesus smiled on me in the spawns on my original account.
You’ve sold me on re-rolling my account. What do I do now?
In preparation to re-roll your account there are a few things that you will want to do.
I. If you are in a guild and still want to be in that guild after re-rolling your account, then you need to talk to your guild leadership before hand so your old account can be kicked to make room for your re-rolled account after you complete the game tutorial so you can either put in an application or be sent an invite back to the guild.
II. To make the re-rolling process as efficient as possible, you will need to get your guild mates and friends UL ID’s to add to your re-rolled account. This will make the grind of re-rolling progress as quick as possible as these people will be used to carry you for a long stretch in the beginning portion or your re-roll.
As pointed out by @Astarael you should copy your guild mates and friends ID’s into a note on your device or do it old school like me and write it down.
III. The timing of when you decide to re-roll your account is an important thing to consider. Right now you might be asking yourself
Self. Why in the hell would this matter?
Here’s why it’s important. You want to re-roll your account when there is a spawn in rotation or upcoming spawns that has items that are desirable. That will be the spawn that you are initially dumping your gems into.(i.e. a collab, Athena/Valk shared spawn, Divine Grace, new weapons/gear/monsters, etc.)
Now onto the re-roll…
I. The first step of the process depends on what method or operating system you are using to play Unison League.
On iPhone you delete the app and re-install the app. When you receive the notification that there is previous game data and if you want to reload it, YOU DO NOT WANT TO RELOAD IT. It will reload your old account.
On Android/Nox, if you go to Applications>Unison League>Clear Data
Thanks to @Exifea for the more efficient way to complete this step on Android/Nox.
II. Once you get into the game, you will be taken through the tutorial again like all good little noobs.
III. When you finish the tutorial, this is where the fun starts. Now is when you would leave the tutorial guild to go back to your actual guild. This is also when you will want to add guild mates and friends from your previous account to your Friends List.
Spending AP efficiently
When you re-roll an account, you want to power level and progress as fast as possible. In order to do this, you are going to want to concentrate your AP spending on Main Story quests. The reason for this is simple, it is most efficient way to spend your AP in the beginning phase of the re-roll process. It is the most efficient because for the small amount of AP you are spending to run the quest you are accomplishing the following things
Leveling with XP gained
Banking gold for Augmenting and Reforging
Earning gems to spawn for every completed quest as well as from missions
Banking proficiency
You will also be progressing Rank to reach Rank 35 and Rank 40 for the Advanced Trials and Advanced Trials 2 Sub-Quests
Once you unlock Quest With Friends, run your Main Story quests in that mode and bring your damage dealer friends. These friends will carry you through power leveling.
Until you complete the 3rd growth ring of your main class, you should be re-running each quest until you receive the gem for completing it. Once your main class 3rd growth ring is complete move on to the next quest whether you receive the gem or not. The reason for this is to hit rank 35 as quick as possible so you can unlock your 4th growth ring. Once you complete the Advanced Trial for your class, go back to Main Story questing from the first quest where you did not receive the gem. Rerun those story quests until you receive the gem and continue until you have completed your 4th growth ring.
Once you complete the 4th growth ring, go back to continuing to the next quest regardless of whether you receive the gem or not so you can reach Rank 40 as quickly as possible to unlock your 5th growth ring.
But 808Rootz, what about running Augment, Reforge and Gold quests for what I received in spawn?
For a long stretch in the beginning of the game, you are gonna receive a lot of Augment materials(mats) from completing missions. This and the Limimin Expedition. Limimin Expedition will also negate the need to run reforge quests for the most part. Run them if you need keymin, but for the most part you want to concentrate your AP usage on Main Story quests. As far as gold, you should bank more than enough just spamming Main Story quests. If you find yourself lower on gold than you’re comfortable with, you can send the Limimin Expedition out for gold until you’re satisfied and then go back to sending it out for Augment and Reforge mats.
If you utilize the strategy I described above for spending AP efficiently, you will be leveling so fast that you will reach a point where your AP bar is staying at 1,000 AP.
How fast can I progress through the re-roll process?
Personally using this strategy on my re-rolled main account, I power leveled to 116 and 200k+ Gear Score(GS) in 22 days. These are my numbers and some people will hit those landmarks faster or slower, it truly depends on how much you put into the grind.
Can’t I just use EXP Keys to speed up the process?
You can use EXP Keys to speed up the leveling process, but for the XP you gain, you will be losing out on
Gems
Proficiency
Growth ring progression
Gold
Rank progression
Besides, I would recommend stashing those EXP Keys until you hit higher levels where it requires much more XP to reach the next level.
What about using my Proficiency Keys?
I would recommend saving your Proficiency Keys until after you finally reach the point where you deplete your AP bar and have to wait for your AP to refill at a minimum. The reason for this is because you should be gaining adequate amounts of Proficiency from simply running Main Story quests. Plus that takes AP away from Main Story questing.
Gem Usage
If you chose to re-roll your account and are F2P, you should be using as many gems in spawns that have a guaranteed SSR item/ XX cost monster to maximize your spawn returns. You should also be looking at the spawn rates, if there are rate ups, etc. If you’re not doing enough damage, spawn class spawns or guaranteed SSR weapon for weapons. If you’re having issues with survivability, spawn guaranteed SSR body/head equipment. If your lacking in Unison choices or monsters that meet whatever the current meta is, spawn guaranteed SSR XX cost monster. Being F2P requires planning and strategy.
As pointed out by @AwesomeStar you should re-roll until you spawn a 32+ cost monster in one of your early game spawns so you have a solid foundation to start with.
If you chose to re-roll your account and are going to spend money or whale, then it doesn’t matter. Do what your wallet can afford.
I don’t claim to know everything, so if I made any mistakes or you have a contribution to this guide that will make the re-roll process more efficient than let me know so it can be added. I hope this contribution to the UL community helps someone and if you have any questions about re-rolling send me a PM or message me in-game and I’d be more than happy to help, ID is in my signature.

[Video Game Deep Cuts is a weekly newsletter from curator/video game industry veteran Simon Carless, rounding up the best longread & standout articles & videos about games, every weekend. This week's highlights include videos on the making of Raw Data & the surprise debut of Scanner Sombre, plus the history of seminal NES emulator NESticle.
A quick and early newsletter this week, since we're in Texas for a few days visiting friends game-centric & non game-centric - among them Venus Patrol/ex-IGF supremo Brandon Boyer (& world's cutest megadog Scout), as well as Gamasutra publisher/EIC Kris Graft.
One thing I did find interesting from the links I still managed to excavate, though - the recent GDC video linked below about the making of VR standout Raw Data has a fairly high dislike-to-like ratio compared to other GDC videos (more dislikes than normal).
Why? Well, partly because the game dared to hit Early Access at $40 USD with a fairly linear story, by the look of it. If the hope was that VR would ensnare the 'core gamer', I'm starting to wonder whether VR experiences are even core gamer-compatible in terms of narrative, linearity & replayability. Which would be a pretty big stumbling block, if true... Anyhow, until next time?

The future of dialogue in games (Alex Wiltshire / PC Gamer) "Getting to discover the politics and personalities of a new location should feel like a reward, but the same formulaic text dump from city to city can make you feel awfully weary. Being NPCsplained at with screeds of exposition and feeling you’re taking little meaningful part in it all, game dialogue can make you want to run back into the hills."
[Game] Story - What Is It Good For? (Thomas Grip / Gamasutra Blogs) "This "go write a book instead" attitude isn't new. One of my favorite articles on the subject is Jesper Juul's "Games Telling Stories?". Interestingly, I pretty much agree with all of the points that Juul raises, but reject most of his conclusions. I think that video games are very well suited for telling stories and that there is no inherent conflict. [SIMON'S NOTE: another response to that Bogost article, of course!]"
Early Access Lessons From Raw Data (Chris Hewish & Mike McTyre / GDC / YouTube) "In this 2017 VRDC at GDC session, Survios' Chris Hewish and Mike McTyre break down the technological and artistic challenges, insights, and decisions that continue to influence and evolve the development of Raw Data and helped it climb the Steam charts while still in Early Access. "
When Fans Take Their Love For Twitch Streamers Too Far (Cecilia D'Anastasio / Kotaku) "It was one in the morning when the Twitch streamer Ellohime heard a knock at his front door. He had been grinding away at a PC game that night in December 2015 while his infant daughter and fiancée slept. His 22-year-old brother was crashing in the central Florida home, too, and it wasn’t unheard of for him to invite friends over at odd hours. Ellohime left his desk and went downstairs to the door."
Analysis: 'Scanner Sombre' (Errant Signal / YouTube) "Scanner Sombre is the latest game by Introversion Software, the team that brought you Uplink, Darwinia, DEFCON, and Prison Architect. It's definitely pretty, but what if anything is going on beneath the surface?"
Inside Marvel vs Capcom Infinite: an in-depth interview about accessibility, combos, ditching cross-platform play and sweat equity (Alex Donaldson / VG247) "I sat down with producer Mike Evans and associate producer Peter ‘combofiend’ Rosas to talk about these challenges and chat about Infinite’s gameplay systems in-depth. Rosas in particular is a voice that carries some weight with the fans – he’s a community hire of Capcom’s, and is famous in the fighting game tournament world for performing one of the greatest fighting game comebacks of all time with a lone, vulnerable Spencer in MVC3. He knows his Marvel. Here’s our chat."
Epic, near-EVE-worthy troll sabotages Elite: Dangerous community event (Lee Hutchinson / Ars Technica) "In the vast simulated galaxy of Elite: Dangerous, a years-old mystery concerning an unknown region of space called the Formidine Rift was poised to take a dramatic leap forward on Saturday. An NPC going by the name of Salomé was preparing for a frantic, fast return to the main inhabited core worlds with information that would advance the mystery’s plot. Eliteplayers could choose to try to escort Salomé to safety, or could try to gun her down."
Gamasutra Plays Playerunknown's Battlegrounds with Brendan Greene (Gamasutra Team / Twitch / YouTube) "The Gamasutra crew sits down with Playerunknown, aka Brendan Greene, to talk about the success of Bluehole's latest game Playerunknown's Battlegrounds. [SIMON'S NOTE: the Gamasutra crew are doing more and more live Twitch chats with devs, & here's a particularly notable recent one - more archived on YouTube here.]"
Tumbleseed and the obscure mechanical arcade machine that inspired it (Andrew Webster / Verge) "It never went on to become a huge hit, but for game designer Greg Wohlwend, Ice Cold Beer proved inspirational. So much so that he, along with a small team, set about taking the core mechanic and expanding on it for the new video game Tumbleseed. “We’ve got to be true to the source material,” says Wohlwend of the development process, “out of love and respect for this awesome game that not a lot of people know about.”"
Boom, Headshot! (Martin Annander / Gamasutra Blogs) "However, let’s not rail against violence. That’s not what this is about. Violence can be thrilling, its narrative exciting, and the skills required to master the gameplay can be quite rewarding to attain. We’ve played first-person shooters for decades for reasons other than murder. [SIMON'S NOTE: from a couple of weeks back, but only just spotted it - a powerful partner to Ste Curran's 'Double Tap' GDC 2017 talk?]"
How the Mixed Reality Game 'Bad News' Brings Towns Like 'Twin Peaks' to Life (Steven T. Wright / Glixel) "We were inside a sprawling exhibition hall at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art,where a trio of PhD students from the University of California, Santa Cruz are showing off their project, Bad News – an interactive experience that, much like a play, incorporates aspects of real-world performance."
The Story of NESticle, the Ambitious Emulator That Redefined Retro Gaming (Ernie Smith / Motherboard) "The product of a talented programmer who designed a hit shareware game while he was still in high school, NESticle was so good that everyone looked past the fact its name was basically a dick joke."
In Gacha We Trust: The Appeal of Japanese Free to Play Games (Allen Kwan / Medium) "Richard Garfield recently penned a manifesto on free to play (F2P) games that encourage spending, or what he calls “skinnerware”. While there is perhaps a little bit of irony in the fact that the person responsible for creating one of the bigger “skinnerware” games, Magic the Gathering, writing a manifesto decrying the exploitative nature of these types of games, reading his post made me reflect on the F2P games that I play. [SIMON'S NOTE: this editorial is a little old, but popped up on social media recently & is well worth revisiting!]"
Faithfully updating the art of a classic in Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap (Joel Couture / Gamasutra) "Ben Fiquet spent a great deal of time playing the 1989 Wonder Boy III: The Dragon’s Trap as a child, wandering around its wondrous worlds. The game made a strong impression on him. These feelings would well up again, years later, when Fiquet found himself working on the recently-released remake, Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap."
Rock and Roll Days of StarCraft: a Development Retrospective (StarCraft: Remastered / Blizzard Entertainment) "The year was 1997, and Blizzard art director Samwise Didier’s ’65 Mustang was producing an alarming amount of smoke. The ancient vehicle was held together by little more than duct tape and prayer, and by the time Didier pulled into his garage one sunny Southern California afternoon, it was clear that neither countermeasure would suffice for long."
Interview: The creator of the Conquests adventures on what made them special (GOG.com) "During the steady stream of Quest and Larry games that established [Sierra's] legacy, a couple of less-known but no less-loved titles came along: Conquests of Camelot and Conquests of the Longbow. To celebrate their long-awaited arrival on GOG.com we've approached their creator, Christy Marx, for a chat on what made them so special to her and to so many adventure game fans."
'Hearthstone' Director Ben Brode Talks Surprise Success and Tough Choices (Joshua Calixto / Glixel) "As Hearthstone’s director, Ben Brode has a firm understanding of how much is riding on the game’s complex design. If he and his team tune things to be too random, the competitive scene suffers. Nerf a card too much, and players start to feel like their monetary investments are losing value."
Tom Hall: 5 key design lessons I learned directing Wolfenstein 3D (Jon Irwin / Gamasutra) "Wolfenstein 3D came out exactly 25 years ago, on May 5th, 1992. Nothing was the same after that day. “We knew it was new and special, but we were pretty blown away by the reception,” says Tom Hall, the director and co-designer of the game."
A three-year-old Elite Dangerous mystery is finally unravelling (Wesley Yin-Poole / Eurogamer) "Elite Dangerous players have taken a significant step in solving a mystery that has befuddled its most rabid secret-hunters ever since the game came out. The Formidine Rift mystery, as it's known, kicked off back in 2014 with the release of Drew Wagar's novel Elite Reclamation. Since then players have searched for clues in an attempt to solve this mystery. This week, a major discovery was made that suggests a solution is near."
Lessons from Escape Rooms: Designing for the Real World and VR (Laura E. Hall / GDC / YouTube) "In this 2017 GDC session, escape room designer Laura E. Hall discusses the design fundamentals and structures necessary for creating real-world experiences that offer not only entertainment, but create immersion and transportation for players in order to understand how "physical play" can be a foundation for virtual reality design and beyond. "
