What has been the BL that took you by surprise this year?
Old Fashion Cupcake, it came out of nowhere so I had no expectations, but it still managed to be way better than I was expecting. Absolutely brilliant and one of my favorites of this year. (Full review here.) As a BL it’s not perfect (that award goes to Semantic Error) but as a show for ME it was almost exactly what I love best in the world from acting to filming. A marvelous piece of cinema.
My Ride, a charming little pulp with a fantastic cast and script. Slow burn and really beautiful, this one defied all expectations (I don’t expect much from the Thai pulps) and remains really dear to my heart. Full Review here.
Cherry Blossoms After Winter, Korea went very classic Japanese yaoi with this one and added super atmospheric touches and a nod to equal rights and soem very old fashioned tropes. That’s what was unexpected. Korea usually sticks to a very specific kind of BL, this was not that kind, it made it a particularly nostalgic viewing experience for me. Full review here.
I’m not mentioning some of my other favorites of this year like Minato’s Laundromat, Takara, Bad Buddy, Blueming, DNA Says Love You etc... because they didn’t surprise me, they were what I expected from those industries and talents.
What has been the BL that you felt a disappointed with this year?
Blue of Winter AKA Judo Boys - Korea should stay away from pulps
Love Area: Part 2 - I didn’t expect much, it still disappointed
Love in Spring AKA Spring of Crush - I expected BL, it wasn’t
The Tuxedo - yeah, what the ACTUAL fuck?
Check Out - such a killer intro episode last year, such a terrible series this year
Our Days - what a shit show, why did I watch the whole thing? I’m disappointed in myself.
Coffee Melody - my much anticipated Pavel’s next BL and it was so lackluster
Even Sun - how to blow good chemistry on a bad script 101
Love Mechanics - how to blow good chemistry on a bad script 201
Sky in Your Heart - OMG no, what happened? worst chemistry ever

(Truthfully this year I have been kinda slow with watching new shows BUT I will do my best!)
What has been the BL that took you by surprise this year?
Love In The Air!
I remember watching the pilot trailer when it aired but truthfully I forgot about this show until everyone started talking about it again 😅 Anyways... I fell in love so fast it’s not even funny. My mental health has been meh at best the past few months and I needed a show like LITA to just watch without having to really think :) Also the cast? Like?! In love with all four of them (especially Noeul).
The Eclipse!
I watched ep 1 when it first came out but never continued the show because I wasn’t feeling it (little did I know 🤡). Everyone was hyping this show up so I made myself sit down and watch it... ended up binging all 6 (aired) episodes and safe to say I was hooked... I mean if anyone on here saw my blog you were probably fed up of me talking about this show (very sorry). So yeah... It’s now one of my favourite BLs. We won’t talk about the cast because I will never stop, lets just say I am now a Neo and khaotung fanpage!
This technically doesn’t count but I finally watched Bad Buddy this year and I’m mad at myself for waiting so long.
What has been the BL that you felt a bit disappointed with this year?
Cutie Pie- I didn’t dislike it but I found myself getting bored and skipping a lot, especially towards the end... shout out to Perth in that black shirt tho😏 Also loved the side couples
Even Sun- Listen I will do anything for BounPrem but lord I was struggling with this one. Why was the intro so long?! also who wrote the script because ooft. Skipped everything apart from the BounPrem scenes.
What has been your favourite BL this year?
KinnPorsche- Lets all act surprised! This show was my entire personality all summer and the reason I came back to tumblr lol. Met so many lovely and amazing people because of this show and it will always have a special place in my heart. It also gave us the masterpiece that is Why Don’t You Stay aka my most played song of 2022. Again the cast is everything to me!
Semantic Error- No explanation needed for this one really. I swear Seoham has been in the military for years! Why is it going so slowly?!
Between Us- Are we only 4 episodes in? Yes. Do I care? NOPE! After waiting almost 3 years they could just stand in that locker room arguing for 12 episodes and I would still watch every second! As much as i tried not to, I did and still do have high expectations for this show BUT so far everything is perfect- I don’t really care about Team’s friends as characters or the relationship between Bee and Prince? but I also don’t hate it.

What has been the BL that took you by surprise this year?
Old Fashion Cupcake. It came out of nowhere! One random day Viki uploaded the first episode, and was like “You wanna watch an oddly named show from Japan?” and my my my (sing it like Troye Sivan) it hit every sweet spot. The scene that was done all in one sequence?! I’m still there. I’m living in that scene. I only come out because I have to pay bills. I’m going to rewatch it for the 80th time now.
What has been the BL that you felt a bit disappointed with this year?
It would have been Oh! My Sunshine Night, but it seemed to embrace its messiness (adding more episodes on the day of the finale!) in a way that I love (amnesia?! a murder plot?! a bubble bath?!!!!) so…
Between Us. It’s the same issue I had with Until We Meet Again. I don’t know how Win and Team’s plot is going to carry over for twelve episodes. We keep getting snippets of In and Korn (TW, please), and shots of Dean and Pharm, but we already know their story, so it’s like recycled plot with a new scent. It’s nice to see Dean not so robotic (“fuck off”) and Pharm not being infantilized, but on top of Alphabet Soup’s issues with Prince Charming, a drowning, Manow doing her (keep it up, we love it!), Tul and Wan’s Gameboys moment, baby Santa looking adorable as Wiew, the product placement of what is clearly NOT water, and the daddy issues (actual issues with their father and not Love in the Air daddy issues), I don’t know how this souffle is going to rise. However, it’s not even close to being finished, so I’m excited to watch how it bakes.
What has been your favorite BL this year?
Love Mechanics. I’m trash for VeeMark’s throat grabs. Trash! Vee being a topsy-turvy bisexual who couldn’t get his shit together is the bisexual representation I want. How many bisexuals do we know who have their shit together? Not a damn one. This show is basically a documentary. Then, Mark being the ultimate Sour Patch Kid who is willing to fist fight his father only made the dynamic between a gay and his huge red flag that much better.
Favorite BL couples (not just of 2022)?
MaxTul are my anything and everything. Korn and Knock. Tan and Bun. Sequels. Prequels. Unconfirmed projects – WHERE IS TRANSPLANT?! It always blows my mind that they are the same age, if not younger than another long-established pair, and came out the gate slutting up our screens. Not even making it a competition, it’s just wild to me that they did the devil’s tango day one, which we see more often now, and held a gun to each other’s head two years ago so DanYok, ToddBlack, KinnPorsche, and VegasPete could fly (I see you HIStory 3: Trapped. Taiwan, you're still my #1). They remind me of a Taiwanese couple with the domestic bliss, the high heat, and the batshit craziness, and I hope they live long and happy lives.
If you had to suggest a BL for someone what would it be?
To My Star 1 AND 2. Yeah, I wrote that. Not just To My Star, but To My Star 2 as well. The reasons speak for themselves, but just in case, never forget his lip was bleeding.
What's your non-BL favorite for this year?
Our Flag Means Death. I only support the girls, the gays, and the goths, so I was happily surprised that I was, in fact, supporting an entire ship of gays and their support goth with this show about pirates. If you think I’m crazy about colors and symbolism in BLs, imagine me watching this show when Ed started wearing color compared to his usual black and wore Stede’s RED robe after Stede gave him a RED cloth, that Ed placed in his pocket where his heart is because Stede gave him love only to throw it in the wind when…
Let me calm down. This show was glorious, and I’m delighted it got a second season. De. Light. Ed.

What has been the BL that took you by surprise this year?
To be fair, ChocoMilkShake -> (I am aware it is still airing but I am pretty sure it will finish airing before the year is over) When I heard the concept I was kinda like ???? Dog??? Cat??? BL???? But I was so happily surprised omg.
Roommates of Poongduck 304 -> I HAVE NO IDEA WHY I DOUBTED THIS IN THE BEGINNING BUT OH MY GOD I LOVE THEM SO MUCH NOW
What has been the BL that you felt a bit disappointed with this year?
To be very very honest... And hear me out here... Big Dragon -> The first episode I was like: OH SHIT LET'S GO??? The spice, the drama the bdsm... but then I was like... Where...Where did that go? I LOVE the couple, like MosBank are hawt... But I feel like MosBank has more chemistry than MangkornYai does and... Idk? Season 2 redemption????? Idk
Cutie Pie -> was a little hard to get through for me at times... Sorry? The couple is great, the story wasn't my fav
The rest of the slightly more disappointing shows are from before 2022 so I won't go on a rant lmfao
What has been your favourite BL this year?
KINNPORSCHE -> Oh my god, this show changed me... Like, I can't even explain in words how... But I literally consume every piece of content I can about the cast because I cannot get enough. I'm gonna rewatch it another 10 times probably?
Love in the Air -> I don't even know how to explain this one tbh, I just love the cast, the characters, the storyline didn't even matter that much to me as long as I got to see them doing their thing.. It had some deeper messages here and there too which I loved.
Blueming -> Do I need to explain this one?
Semantic error -> My first BL, again do I need to explain this one?
(I know it's not done airing but...) Between Us -> as long as it does not take some really hectic turns... It's def a fav for this year at least!

what have been the BLs that took you by surprise this year?
my ride: I had planned on watching this show just because it had been in my plan to watch for like, 2 years, but what I didn’t expect was for it to become an instant comfort show for me. despite not having the most out there, original plot, this show was quirky & fun enough to win over my heart. the relationship & characters are also quite vanilla, yet still managed to pull me in greatly, and honestly you can feel the care & soul that was put into this series, which is very rare for bl nowadays. an instant favorite that I’ve already rewatched twice lol
to sir with love: I went into this lakorn fully expecting it to be like all the others, lowkey homophobic & always ending up with the bury your gays trope, but nope! not only are the characters top tier, the drama so felt & entertaining and the acting incredible, but the main ship??? truly had me in a chokehold, I would die for them you don’t understand!!!
rak diao: now, I went into the first bl sitcom expecting it to be all laughs & no depth, but this show swept me off my feet pretty much immediately. not only is it super funny & entertaining, but the relationship was also really good & balanced, and for once the banter didn’t stop after 3 episodes but basically continued until the very end. this was SUPER entertaining!
triage: so I hadn’t planned on watching this show at all bc I usually don’t really love supernatural stuff & also it looked like a very intense show, but I ended up binging this one in under 24 hours lmao. this was hella entertaining & the loops were super well thought of so as not to feel repetitive, the acting was good, the writing great... honestly such a good time, & I’m so glad I gave that show a second chance :)
what have been the BLs that you felt a bit/a lot disappointed with this year?
check out: I never really expected this one to blow it out of the park, but I hadn’t anticipated this show to be one of the worst shows I’ve EVER seen. like everything that could’ve been done wrong... was done wrong, but especially nine as a love interest was truly the most toxic piece of shit I’ve ever witnessed.
cutie pie: I hadn’t planned on watching this show at all but the trailer got me. sadly the plot that made me watch the show is dropped after 3 episodes & then most of the screentime is dedicated to filler scenes & unnecessary sex scenes. just... such a waste of my time.
you’re my sky: another show I hadn’t planned on watching but the trailer got to me. this had SO MUCH potential... but it was wayyy too slow & boring for me, which makes me sad bc they even managed to make a cheating ship boring, like... that’s talent I guess :’)))
what has been your favorite BL this year?
I mean... anyone who follows me knows it’s not me lol. honestly I feel kinda bored at the idea of repeating what I’ve been saying non-stop about this show, but it’s literally the biggest punch in the gut I’ve ever seen. this show changed my dna, and it was the most vivid fandom experience of my entire life. not only is it the most daring thai drama ever released with the most important message, which led to a LOT of censorship & sabotage against it, but the cinematography? gorgeous. the acting? the best of the best. the chemistry? absolutely top tier. the characters? heart-achingly good. the intimacy? literally never seen before. the writing? so fucking impactful. the originality? 10/10. the high tension scenes? literally gave me a fucking heart attack every episode. like I’m sorry, wrap it up, there will NEVER be another show at the level of not me. thanks for coming to my ted talk <3
favorite BL couples (not just of 2022)?
idk if we’re talking actors or characters but I have a whole post on my top 10 bl ships here :) as for irl ships, I have a few ships I like, namely drakefrank (dead) & mii2 (dead for now), or ships I’ve been recently into like firstkhao, but everyone knows I’m THE offgun girlie of course, and I will never ship anyone else on their level. not only is offgun the oldest thai bl ship still together, but their relationship is straight out of a bl drama??? guy full of toxic masculinity gets paired with a very cuddly adorable dude & slowly becomes the biggest simp for him??? hello, make this a series thanks <3 but also let’s not kid ourselves, offgun have definitely the best relationship ever, bc they’re genuinely friends & also feel so much more genuine than frankly every other ship. you can tell they’re special to each other by comparing how they act together vs with others, and also I’m sorry but they’ve starred in literally two of the best thai dramas ever released & no other ships can say that <3 I will stop here bc I scream about offgun on the daily so I’ve already said all that I needed to say on my blog lol
what's your non-BL favorite this year?
the revenge: truly one of the most daring thai dramas ever released, I’ve never binged a thai show this fast, like the chokehold this had on me while it aired was uncomparable in terms of non bl show with no fandom, it’s just... I can’t describe it but everything about this series WORKS? like the direction is amazing, the writing absolutely gut-wrenching, the acting is TOP TIER, especially from non chanon, foei patara & victor chatchawit, the characters will make you BARF, for half the show you don’t even know whether to root for the main character or not, it’s just... ugh if that show was korean or american I guarantee it would be famous. truly incredible & an instant favorite, I WILL plug this show every occasion I get!
ps: I hate you: definitely one of the best shows gmmtv has ever produced! it shares a lot of the same qualities as the revenge even though the two stories are quite different in the sense that it’s gritty, morally fucked up, but with insanely good acting, writing & directing. some of the scenes straight up gave me CHILLS, and in terms of entertainment?? yeah, this one is up there!
extraordinary attorney woo: just such a fucking good time! this show was clearly designed perfectly to work, frankly I don’t really see any flaw in it except from the ending being a bit unsatisfying bc it’s left open for a second season, but this is just expertly executed & a really great show all around!

What has been the BL that took you by surprise this year?
I only started watching BL in July, so the genre as a whole took me as a surprise. And early on I didn't really know what to expect, so I wasn't really surprised by anything. But recently both Big Dragon and Eternal Yesterday have moved me in unexpected ways. Big Dragon because the story ended up being so different, and much more interesting, than the first episode led me to expect, and Eternal Yesterday because I started it having basically no idea what to expect and it's blown me away with it's storytelling and it's weird concept that somehow is tender and heartbreaking and funny and so very human.
What has been the BL that you felt a bit disappointed with this year?
Probably I would say Color Rush. I know it didn't come out this year, but that's when I saw it. It was one of the earliest BLs I watched, and I went into it with high expectations based on hearing great things about it and it just didn't work for me. I was intrigued by the concept, the execution just felt too sketched out to make it work for me. (Also I really wished that the only time it shifted into color was when the dude whose name and sci-fi identity I forget was actually seeing in color, and that it was in black and white for the rest. That alone would have made the world building feel more solid.) That said, I'm curious to re-watch it (since it's so short) and see if my opinion changes with a lot more BL under my belt.
If we're talking shows this year, probably Senpai This Can't Be Love! which started off intriguing, and then just kind of fizzled out. I didn't even watch the last two episodes. War of Y was more frustrating and infuriating, but I didn't have expectations for it in the first place so I wasn't that disappointed.
What has been your favorite BL this year?
AHH! How do I chose??? The ones I've given 10/10 have been: I Told Sunset About You, Bad Buddy, Old Fashion Cupcake, Utsukushii Kare (My Beautiful Man), Semantic Error, Blueming, and To My Star 2: Our Untold Stories. But even though I was a bit frustrated with the ending, the one that felt most like my show as I watched it week to week was The Eclipse. So maybe I will put that.
What are your favorite BL couples (not just of 2022)?
I made another post listing my top ten BL relationships so I will copy and paste it here. I don't know if my "couple" list would be different, but in making this one I was thinking specifically about the way they love each other, and if it felt like a love I believed.

I wrote that in October, so I'd now add See-eiw & Cake (My Only 12%) and Yai and Mangkorn (Big Dragon) to the list. And Mitsuru & Koichi (Eternal Yesterday) will probably end up on there once it finishes.
If you had to suggest a BL for someone what would it be?
Hmm. I'm taking this to mean someone who's never seen BL before. Probably Semantic Error or Old Fashion Cupcake. Both are really well crafted series, and are simple but still nuanced and interesting stories. I'd also put Bad Buddy on the list, in some ways it exists in conversation with other Thai BL, but it was the first I watched (besides ITSAY) and it still made sense to me and in a way that made it a good intro to Thai BL. There are many other shows that are a little odder or more difficult (ITSAY, Utsukushii Kare, Blueming) that I think could be a great introduction for the right person, but I wouldn't give them as a blanket rec.

I have watched very little that wasn't BL this year. But The Devil Judge, despite being pretty obviously a gay romance story under the censorship, isn't technically a BL so I will say that one. If I'm allowed to go back to fall of 2021, (it ended less than a year ago!) I will put Wheel of Time.

What have been the BLs that took you by surprise this year?
Once Again – I never thought that a series could make me feel so conflicted between pure enjoyment of watching it and pure devastation in the end. It is both a comfort watch and a catharsis watch.
Choco Milk Shake – the idea of a cat and dog coming back to life as humans to make their former owner happy again was something else and first I was just curious, but I fell in love with it within the first second Choco and Milk appeared on screen. They’ve done such a well job portraying the dog’s and cat’s behaviour as humans without being cringy or embarrassing.
Happy Ending Romance – I enjoy the way this story is told so much. And reading the synopsis I had something different in mind. The storytelling is like a good book. It is exciting, but some times you need to use your own mind to make the story whole, to see behind the actions of the people. It is a show that makes you use your brain and I like that.
180 degree longitude passes through us – When I first saw the trailer I knew I would love it, but never had I thought I would love it that much. It has such a deep and complex story! And it helped me back into writing about my thoughts and to express my feelings. And the cinematography and the writing were just outstanding for me. Beautiful.
Old Fashion Cupcake – A story about two “older” men eating desserts and bonding over it? Never thought I would feel so vulnerable watching this. It restored something in me. At first, I had no intention in watching it, because it sounded not that interesting, but damn, how wrong I was. One of the most beautiful stories of the year and one of the reasons why I give every show a chance now, perhaps there is a hidden gem behind a not so interesting synopsis.
Secret Crush On You – First I thought I would just feel a lot of this second-hand embarrassment and cringe through the episodes, but I fell in love with the characters and the series touched my heart in a special way. It just makes me happy!
What have been the BLs that you felt a bit disappointed with this year?
Senpai this can’t be love – It had such a good start and I really liked it, but the last episode was just not good and it ruined my whole feeling for this show.
Check Out – just what the hell was this?
Coffee Melody – it sounded so cute and good and in the end it was just bland and Duean was unlikable.
Star and Sky: Sky in your heart – I liked star in my mind and thought they keep up the fluffy and sweet storytelling, but Fah became boring and unappealing. But I liked the character of Prince. He was a cutie.
What has been your favorite BL this year?
Just one? Really? Well, I just go with my heart and my heart tells me “Once Again”. I don’t know why, but I have some very strong emotions about this show. And yes, I love Love Mechanics and 180 degree longitude passes through us, but the emotional impact was something different with “Once Again”.

what have been BLs that took you by surprise this year?
Triage the Series: It's literally the only series I've ever watched with a time loop and it was insane from beginning to end. Had me on the edge of my seat and I was very excited to see TaeTee together again after we got played by 2MOONS.
Ghost Host Ghost House: I didn't know what to expect, but damnnnnn not only was the series a tearjerker but also so freaking soft and romantic. You find yourself crying about the tragedies and then squealing about the romance budding amidst the pain.
Blueming: Such a refreshing series. It felt the most like what it was supposed to portray. It was so simple and yet damn near perfect. The series felt the least like a BL, kind of sidestepping a bunch of tropes and making them seem more realistic. IDK how to explain it. Hwang Da Seul is just really talented.
Secret Crush on You: Once you get past the cringe that is eps 1-3 then you start to realize that the series is kind of epic with great representation and support and dialogue. It's a relatable series with relevant content.
Takara-kun to Amagi-kun: I wasn't expecting to love those boys so much. It's another simple series that left a huge impact. They really showcased what a first real love is supposed to be like.
what have been BLs that you felt a bit disappointed with this year?
Check Out the Series: WHACK!
The Eclipse: It just didn't hit for me the way it hit for everyone else.
Coffee Melody: It started off cute! But became boring and the main character became annoying.
Fahlanruk: Again, started off cute, but Fahlan? I couldn't stand him. He demanded so much from Sherbet and forced his way into the man's life. I just couldn't commit to him.
Mr. Unlucky Has No Choice but to Kiss: I mean. It wasn't bad, it just didn't hold my attention.
what has been your favorite BL this year?
Love in the Air: Swooped in and took the #1 spot from KP. It really wasn't even about the plot it was more about the characters for me. PayuRain and PrapaiSky were just amazing couples. The chemistry was unmatched. ALSO NO ONE TOLD ME THAT THE ACTOR THAT PLAYED SIG PLAYED DR. SING IN TRIAGE! That man could act because the stark difference in characters left it impossible for me to notice.
Between Us: WinTeam FTW. I've been waiting for this series for a long time and it has not been disappointing. BounPrem have come a long way and it shows in this series.
KinnPorsche the Series: Originally I was only planning to watch KP for JeffGame, but then all that drama went down with the original production company and Game left so I was like NAH BUT THEN I SAW THE TRAILER?? This series is really what popped off Mafia themes in BL. I love some action and romance so I was not let down.

CaiReel, KinnPorsche, PayuRain, FighterTutor, PluemKevin, Phunnoh, AePete, TharnType, NubsibGene, DeYi, Hao Ting x Xi Gu, TangFei, Kurodachi, WeiLan, Wangxian, WenZhou, and Yu Zhen x Shi Lei. There are much more but we would be here a long time.
what's your non-BL favorite this year?
Kei x Yaku: I mean technically it's a bromance and I think the source content was a bromance too. The plot was thrilling and exciting and suspenseful. The chemistry was top notch. The action scenes were amazing. Like the entire series was 10/10.
Heartstopper and Young Royals 2: Queer content but not Asia-based so technically not BLs. Heartstopper has excellent LGBTQ representation across the board. It's sweet and funny and the tackle a lot of topics. Young Royals is on the opposite side of the high school queer spectrum. It's filled with angst and anxiety. Follows up with Prince Wille once he returns to school and has to be in contact with his ex-boyfriend again and the people that helped facilitate their breakup.
Gap the Series: I'm loving the girlies. Office romance between a newly graduated young woman and her seemingly untouchable idol/boss.
MMM that's really it, the only thing I watch outside of BL is reality TV and courtroom shows.

What has been the BL that took you by surprise this year?
I find it really difficult to remember my expectations before a show to have an immediate answer to this but maybe Vice Versa...? I think I knew it would be interesting with the alternative universe setting, and even though the show didn't explore that enough I was overjoyed with the design of the show. The details, the colours, Fuse's t-shirts... I was also pleasantly surprised by the improvement in Jimmy's acting since playing Wai in Bad Buddy.
What has been the BL that you felt a bit disappointed with this year?
The only DNF I've had this year was Coffee Melody - so I guess that was disappointing - but of the ones I did actually finish I think the two Star and Sky shows...and Cutie Pie to some extent. With Star in My Mind, I had been so excited to see Joong again but the story (and Dunk's acting) didn't live up to my expectations. For Sky in Your Heart, I was hoping for a Tale of a Thousand Stars quality show but both Mek's acting and the production fell short. Cutie Pie started SO GOOD - I adored the design and was so excited about Zee (and Poppy!) - but the story was so slow and contrived I ended up so frustrated at the missed potential.
What has been your favourite BL this year?
God, it's so hard for anything to top the chokehold Bad Buddy has on me BUT if I move that one aside, there have been others that I have I loved and each for a different reason...and since these reasons make them equally fantastic I'm going to list them all: The Eclipse (the story, the acting, the symbolism); Kinnporsche (for how batshit crazy it was...and for PeteVegas); Semantic Error (just them, the enemies to lovers dynamic, the grumpy/sunshine pairing, the colours!); Vice Versa (for all the reasons I mentioned above); and Love Mechanics (just VeeMark's chemistry).
Favourite BL couples (not just of 2022)?
Okay, I originally listed 14 and realised that was too many, so I've narrowed it down by half: PatPran (of course); VeeMark (the chemistry, the angst; the disasters that they are); AkkAyan (communication kings); MingKit (from 2moons2 - where my love for Joong began); AePete (the softness!); Jack and ZhaoZi (the domestic mercenary and the joyfully innocent police officer); and RamKing (we've been robbed of their continuation. ROBBED!). Oh and them:
If you had to suggest a BL for someone what would it be?
For a non-bl watcher: Semantic Error or Old Fashion Cupcake (because they have the least tropes or product placements that I feel you'd also have to explain to a newbie bl watcher). For a bl watcher: Not Me (for the art, bodies, dance and Gun)
What's your non-BL favourite for this year?
I guess I could say Not Me for this, since it stands slightly outside of the bl genre, but I think the only actual non-bl show I watched this year was The Gifted and The Gifted Graduation (although I haven't finished the latter yet)...

What has been the BL that took you by surprise this year?
จริงๆ there were so many wonderful surprises this year, such as Choco Milk Shake, Blueming, Big Dragon, Secret Crush on You, My Secret Love, Kabe Koji, Takara-kun to Amagi-kun, Minato’s Laundromat, Mr. Unlucky, and… honestly like all the J-BLs this year.
But, I think Ghost Host Ghost House was the biggest and best surprise. I expected a campy low-budget horror-comedy. They delivered a beautiful story of love and loss, regret and acceptance. It definitely had it’s rough spots but I forgive them all.
What has been the BL that you felt a bit disappointed with this year?
There were a number of disappointments this year (Coffee Melody, Ai Long Nhai, Check Out, Fahlanruk, etc), but for me the biggest disappointment was Oh My Sunshine Night.
It was a mess. Even the director was disappointed. They started with a great fresh concept based on a mock trailer for a OhmFluke fan meet and then the story was ripped apart and cobbled back together and bloated with way too much convoluted plot and side stories into… whatever that was. I just hate wasted potential and wasted talent.
What has been your favorite BL this year?
Love in the Air. I don’t need to elaborate.
Favorite BL couples (not just of 2022)?
Well obviously PayuRain.
But also, in no particular order, AkkAyan, WinTeam, PatPran, PrapaiSky, CakeEiw, Caireel, WangXian, WenZhou, PleumKawin, and Kurodachi. Plus like 100 more character couples. Not to mention all the shipping couples. So much love to go around.
If you had to suggest a BL for someone what would it be?
I always go with My Engineer. It’s a classic. It’s campy, light hearted, and fun with a great, well-balanced ensemble. It’s full of BL tropes but plays like a parody of BL tropes. It’s cringe and low budget, but launched some major talent.
It’s really the perfect entry level BL and I have proof, just ask @linameka what I had her watch as her introductory BL two years ago.
What’s your non-BL favorite for this year?
Hands down it’s gotta be Mama Gogo!

what have been the BLs that took you by surprise this year?
I think I was the most surprised by Eternal Yesterday. I went into it expecting something more along the lines of Senpai, This Can't Be Love or Kabe Koji, which is kind of slapstick, lighthearted and not too intellectually challenging, but boy was I proven wrong. The show manages to take a ridiculous premise and turn it into a well-written, well acted story that is probably going to break my heart (at the moment the final episode is yet to air...)
what have been the BLs that you felt a bit a lot disappointed with this year?
Sing In Love.
I was excited about a grittier plot and a new Japanese production, but it just made me uncomfortable and I did not want to finish it.
Cherry Magic The Movie also felt like a letdown. It just bored me, honestly.
what has been your favorite BL this year?
omg i looked up a list to see which ones were from this year, and it was like 5 Japanese, 5 Korean, 5 Taiwanese and then 60 billion Thai😂
I think my favorites are Old Fashion Cupcake and Eternal Yesterday.
Old Fashion Cupcake is everything I wanted in a good drama; good pacing, relationships between characters that make sense, believable character behavior and good acting and also really hot actors.
Eternal Yesterday has just absolutely overwhelmed me. I am a sucker for melancholic stories (to the surprise of literally no one), and the way Japanese dramas manage to wrap up some quite profound thoughts about the world and what it means to be a human is something I really adore.
In Episode 6 when Koichi asks if it's impossible for the people you love to be tied in the same place; for two people to be equally important to and loved by you. Or Episode one, where Mitsuru says it's not that Koichi broke down his wall, but he opened a door through it.
I really thought about adding More Than Words to the list, but I feel like it shouldn't really be grouped into the BL-genre. I still feel like the frames of the genre are limiting many aspects of film-making and storytelling, and that it's more an LGBT+ story than a BL drama.
favorite BL couples (not just of 2022)?
BounPrem and YinWar I think. Now that Prem has gone independent, I just want him to drag Boun with him to Yin and War to create a Supreme Company for Hot People™ and to actually make the YinWar Concert Trailers into a really hot show.
Especially War is an absolutely incredible actor, so I just really hope the two of them will get some interesting projects in the coming year!
what's your non-BL favorite this year?
Silent.
No doubt, no question. It's so good. Everyone and their grandmother should watch it pls.

I didn't intend for every show on here to be Japanese, I just think the Japanese shows I'm mentioning are a lot more well-rounded than the Korean and Thai and Taiwanese counterparts that I've seen this year. I am intrigued by how Korea seems to be branching out more and embracing the genre not as adaptations of fictional stories, but as stories about people. I just feel like the genre is so old in Japanese medias that they're a step ahead and I like how the Japanese shows are carried by the stories of the characters and their little lives rather than some large, daunting outer factor.
I want to tag a lot of people but I am an awkward turtle so I don't have a lot of people to tag. I hope it's ok to tag @storge and @chaeunwoo 🥺

what have been BLs that took you by surprise this year?
okay, this one is easy - Semantic error! since i don’t really keep up with all bls and don’t really know when they’re airing and awaits us in the upcoming year (yes, i am that basic hoe who finds out about most bls thanks to my lovely mutuals and people i follow - they fill my dash with delicious images and gifsets and i just get swept up and start watching too!) i was not expecting much from this since korean bls sometimes don’t capture me and their cinematography impresses me much more than the story but this time around i absolutely fell in love with Sangwoo and Jaeyoung (thanks to my lovely friends @bengiyo and @kyr-kun-chan - i wouldn’t watched it if it weren’t for them!)
plus Not me - because that show grew on me, managed to get me out of my deep Bad Buddy hyperfixation and i am not complaining! parts of the soundtrack even made it to my top 5 songs of the year, one being my most listened to... you can imagine what a grip that show had/has on me! the story was absolutely gripping and i applaud them for having at least 3 characters panting after a character played by Gun (yes, even Gram before his evil twin Kilo took his place and yes Todd too... no i won’t be explaining further!)
what have been BLs that you felt a bit disappointed with this year?
To my star 2 - before you come for me with pitchforks, let me explain! i love Jiwoo and Seojoon so much but i was so hyped for the show to air that when it did and we got all that angst i was just - i didn’t expect that and i should have, especially after the last promos were uploaded right before the show aired. so it’s not even disappointment but more me expecting something different but then i got on board, because of course i did, i love them so much...
what has been your favorite BL this year?
a lot of you would expect me to say Bad Buddy - but i found a loophole and will say that the majority of bad buddy aired in 2021 so i count it as a 2021 show!!
i was not expecting KinnPorsche to have such a grip on me - i think i was the only person in the bl fandom who didn’t even know about KinnPorsche right until like a week before it aired (again, i am bad at keeping up with new releases and all that, don’t judge me)!
i also know a lot of people were hyped for it but lost interest quickly, some even came to hate it and i totally understand where they’re coming from, there are things in KinnPorsche that could have been fine-tuned, sure, but all in all this show gave me something i wasn’t used to in bls - 2 broad as fuck dudes not only being into each other and having sex a lot, actually showing their desire for each other but they also had so many tender moments which, again, i am not used to seeing with men like them? not just in bl in general, but a lot of the time, guys who look like Kinn and Porsche usually don’t have stories like the one they got (especially the romance) - it managed to be light-hearted in some moments, playful and hot in others and also downright tender and soft, they got to be sweet with each other, they were allowed to hold each other and love one another - plus the plot was something i actually enjoyed, there’s so much they could do with a second season if we get one, and the fandom experience here on tumblr was amazing!
i have not watched a lot of bls this year because my mental health went off the rails and it’s still not the best, but i am not at least watching some new shows... but kinnporsche took the crown for me personally this year, followed by Not me and Semantic error

Todd & Black (we all saw it, your mother saw it... they fucked before, they had that energy and it’s a hill i will die on)
what's your non-BL favorite this year?
if i am bad at bls and keeping up with them, then i am even worse with non-bl content...
i have a hard time connecting with shows so i either hyperfixate on something or i drop it before i even finish it...
i did enjoy the third and last season of Derry girls, cause i love them and i was sad that the show ended; i like the third season of The Umbrella Academy but season 2 will remain my favourite!
Young Royals and Heartstopper being the little gay shows i loved and adored and cherished too!
and recently i really enjoyed Wednesday on Netflix

What has been the BL that took you by surprise this year?
i’ve already mentioned it several times but you’re my sky blew me away. it wasn’t even on my to-watch list (a sports bl? about basketball? yeah, pass) but then back in february i was on a long-ish sick leave and i had nothing else to watch so i gave it a go and... wow. it was so good. i’ve never been so invested in a basketball match. it was well-written and supported by a talented cast but the cinematography was what elevated it one cut above the rest for me.
What has been the BL that you felt a bit disappointed with this year?
oh boy, just like @negrowhat, i was not “a bit” but highly disappointed with check out. the prequel episode made me look forward to it but then the series dropped and i was just... truly i didn’t know a bl could feel so soulless.
What has been your favorite BL this year?
oh man, that’s tough. it’s a tie between kinnporsche and love in the air — if i had to pick, kinnporsche is the better (and most insane) show, but love in the air was such a(n unexpected) joy and a delight to watch each week.

drama-wise, even though it’s still airing, i’d say shiko funjatta! (sumo do, sumo don’t) is the strongest contender. i’m enjoying it sooo much.

What has been the BL that took you by surprise this year?
Big Dragon absolutely shocked me with how much I ended up loving it. Like, we went from toxic as fuck boys that you love to hate to 'oh, you're both just pathetic meow meows who want to toxic because of low self worth' and I adored it. Plus, Park and Pong!
DNA Says I Love You because the idea and the descriptions and the trailer never quite hit me but this show blew me away, A+.
Ghost Host, Ghost House because I did not go into 'goofy BL about ghosts' expecting life lessons, maturing love, a time skip that worked for me and a sad GL.
Old Fashion Cupcake because I knew I'd like it but I did not expect to just fall in love with every aspect of that show.
Also, so far, My Tooth Your Loveis blowing me out of the water with the romance and the tenderness and the communication.
This one is always hard for me because I tend to go into shows hoping/expecting to like them.
What has been the BL that you felt a disappointed with this year?
KinnPorsche and no, I will not be taking questions or asks, thank you.
Also, The Tuxedo for everything and Meow Ears Up for not giving me any kisses and Enchante for the way it treated Akk at the end and Plus and Minus for the entire ending again... I could keep going, honestly. That's My Candy for fucking existing, Sky in Your Heart for the entire romance....
What has been your favorite BL this year?
I mean, it's between Cherry Blossoms After Winter and Old Fashion Cupcake and The Eclipse.
Favorite BL couple of 2022
Honestly? Kan and Thua. I don't think anyone compares at the moment. Like... absolutely no one except maybe Em and Name but I need their ending before I can declare that.
If you had to suggest a BL for someone what would it be?
A Tale of a Thousand Stars or Old Fashion Cupcake.
What's your non-BL favorite for this year?
What do I watch that isn't BL? Oh! Nailed It! I really like Nailed It for when I just want to watch people having a good time and baking but horribly. The earlier seasons are better, no denials, but the later seasons are so over the top it's impossible not to laugh.

Getting to know your BL mutuals - 2022 Edition

What has been the BL that took you by surprise this year?
Big Dragon, I like it way more than I thought I would from the trailer and the first episode. It wasn't really on my radar. God damn are they making my emotions swing from 'this guys is an idiot I can't stand him' to 'I just want to pet him, pathetic meow, meow'. Except for Park and Pong I adore them all the time.
Also Secret Crush on You. Another that wasn't on my radar. The first episode rubbed me up the wrong way and I thought I'd hate the stalker storyline but by god does Billy and Seng have some great chemistry and give it depth to pull it off. Plus the storyline evolved and covered so many topics/themes. First times, body confidence, bullying, gender identity, questioning stereotypical roles in a relationship.
What has been the BL that you felt a bit disappointed with this year?
I normally am a pretty good judge of if I will like it from the trailer so I don't get massively disappointed when watching. Strangely enough, it's not that a feel disappointed with War of Y but I'm not in love with it like I thought I would be. It's good and the chemistry between the actors is great and yet I'm not 100% connecting with it. Fingers crossed for the 4th and last story as it was the one I was waiting for.
Even Sun. Now I adore BounPrem with all my heart but this series had so many things wrong with it. And it was frustrating because I could see glimpses of the good there, Prem was funny as Sun and some of the Bounprem moments were great. But there were too many characters, they should have focused on the one couple, and the translations were so bad that the storyline didn't always make sense (I saw a better translation at a later date and the storyline was so much better!) But overall the writing was abysmal.
What has been your favourite BL this year?
How do I choose one? Seriously? It can't be done. In no particular order. Kinnporsche, Love in the Air, Semantic Error. I reserve the right to add Between Us at a later date! I can and will rewatch all of these numerous times.
Favourite BL couples (not just of 2022)?
So, soooooo many!
Wangxian, Payurain, Vegaspete, Akkayan, Jaeyoung/Sangwoo, Winteam, Wenzhou, Seanwhite, Gao Shide/Zhou Shuyi, Jack/Zhao Zi.
You know looking at this list I think I have a type!
If you had to suggest a BL for someone what would it be?
It's kinda dependent on what they are after.
Love in the Air, Kinnporsche, Not Me, Until We Meet Again, Between Us, History3: Trapped, Plus and Minus, Bad Buddy. (Yes I know not all of them are from this year!)
But if they were newbies I'd suggest maybe starting with the Korean BL's like Semantic Error, Roommates of Poongduck 304 and Choco Milk Shake. They are just kinda fluffy with good storylines and are often comedic.
What's your non-BL favourite for this year?
I have two and I would recommend them to everyone!
Thailand's 'Mama Gogo' made me laugh all the way through plus I loved the Older woman/Younger man relationship between Annie and Chen.
Korea's 'Love and Leashes' which again I'm pretty sure Jung Ji Hoo is supposed to be a younger man to Jung Ji Woo's slightly older woman. Their portrayal of a woman discovering her inner Dom was wonderful. Also seeing a submissive man be confident, for the most part, in his submissiveness was refreshing.
