Sewing adventures! I made an evening gown for myself, all the way from drafting the pattern to hand-sewing the finishes. It was very fun, challenging and very much not straight forward.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I had the inspiration a week and a half before an event I wanted to wear the new dress to, and I managed to finish it the night before. The first version was ready for fitting after one long day full of sewing, but I had to cut out the bodice and make a new one due to fit and fabric issues.
Tumblr media
The fabrics were cheap polyester velvet that was knit = stretchy, and a shiny and slippery polyester fabric for the lining that was not stretchy (this stretch mismatch caused problems). The first version had continuous panels all the way from the neckline to the hem, and the weight of the skirt stretched the bodice out of shape so that I had a really hard time attaching it to the lining at the armholes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So I adjusted the pattern to have a waistline to help support the weight of the skirt by attatching it to the lining, and added sleeves so that I didn't have to attatch the dress to the lining at the armholes. And I got extra practice with sewing the invisible zipper, which was originally in the back seam, but that I moved to the side for the final version, eliminating the need for a seam at the center back.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here's the final outfit! I also painted my nails to match the dress and I was very happy with how closely I managed to match the colour.
The base for the pattern, a princess-seamed bodice block, is from freesewing.org. It's a fantastic website that lets you generate sewing patterns to your measurements, and there's tons of customisation, tweaks and design options to choose from for each pattern. Highly recommend! They also have a paperless option, that gives you all the lengths of the sides and points on the patterns so that you don't even have to use a printer. I traced the pattern pieces to paper by hand that way!

I don't often encounter a lot of trans-inclusive language in the wild, so this was a nice surprise while searching for sewing patterns

not my usual art medium BUT! since i did post about it earlier i thought it would be fun to show yall the finished product
i generated the pattern at freesewing.org using the Tristan Top design and lord having a pattern that was so easily printable AND fully customized to my measurements was such a game changer. 10/10 cannot recommend this site enough im like going fucking insane over it. (they also have a bootlegged version of the pattern for the blåhaj ikea shark plushie that you can scale up or down to make either a very tiny or a preposterously fucking huge shark of your own and i think that is so wonderful)
also dont mind my duct tape torso. dress forms are fucking expensive. broke bitches make do.

Hi there!
Sorry if you already have a post for this, but do you have any patterns for vests (not sweater vests), preferably for beginners? Thanks!
Vest sewing patterns
I've got a few older posts that include free sewing patterns for feminine vests and masculine vests.
Freesewing.org also has a free waistcoat pattern you could try. You can fully customise their patterns to your personal measurements, and it comes with instructions.
If you already own a vest that fits well, you can also make a sewing pattern for it by tracing around its individual pattern pieces. Don't forget to make a mock-up of your newly drafted pattern before you cut up your fancy fabric. This will help to avoid potential fit issues.
There's a lot of different types of vests: some are easy enough to be self-drafted, and others can be refashioned out of old clothes you don't wear any more. Check out Pinterest to get some ideas. A refashion makes for an easier beginner's project than a sewing pattern that requires things like button holes or lining.

Good afternoon, do you have any tips on how to draft a masculine corset? I've tried using the one which you get when you google "mens corset" but it confused me a lot, I am considering using the https://freesewing.org/designs/cathrin/ but I feel it might end up a bit waist trainy rather than just smoothing belly and straightening back.
I'm also considering it in more of a casual aspect to see whether it helps me sit at the computer better rather than shrimping so I wouldn't be tight lacing.
I worked with a stays pattern draft rather than a corset--the lines were straighter to begin with, then I did alterations to the bust to flatten it out further. But it's also usually shorter than a long form corset so I don't know how good it'd be for posture/everyday wear

Very lightly edited spy waistcoat rant under the cut posting this from my drafts now before I post the finished draft
Otherwise this will just sit forever
Sposplay
The waist coat
I've been going insane thinking about this for a while because how his waist coat is moddled doesn't god damn work
I've seen work shop items that just sorta gloss over this fact I very much notice in art when someone has gone wait a minute how the hell does his waist coat work???? Most people ignore it and just go eh and either make it a front button or just keep doing the line there was one peice of art I saw that seem to have had the same crisis of how the hell as me but
Stupid dumb idiot waist coat that doesn't button the right way
The ABDGLE GOD THE ANGLE the angle doesn't work on a front buttoned waist coat the sides meet in a V so it can't be that, some double breasted waist coats meet in a V but some can be a flat line neither of which is right it has to be a double breasted waist coat that's non symmetrical
HAS to be double breasted to work and still has to be WEIRD double breasted
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The waist coat patern I'm modifying is from freesewing.org (it's a good site for free paterns check em out)

Studyblr Re-Reintroduction
12/02/2021 12:04
Hi everyone! I’ve been using this tumblr account off and on for a while now, and then proceeding to forget about it in favour of using my other account (the one true main tumble :p). So here’s my nth attempt at getting back into studyblr.
About me
Call me Rinus
He/him pronouns
I’m 20
Currently doing first year at Uni in the Netherlands
Queer as hell
Germanic/Norse heathen (shitty exclusionists not welcome here. there are no nazis in valhalla, none)
Newspaper delivery guy by extremely early morning, English student by day.
Interests
Linguistics
Conlangs?
Beekeeping!
Open source stuff, privacy stuff, security stuff
Whatever my obsession of the week is.
Academia
After some hiccups I’m finally in my first year at uni! Studying “English Language and Culture”
Classes
So far there’ve been two subjects every block, one is linguistics focused, the other is literature focused. For literature we’re currently discussing renaissance and restoration period texts. Linguistics is focused on phonology (and using voice frequency analysers, there’s suddenly physics in my english :/ ), syntax, and morphology.
Self-study
(I’m not that good at like, keeping up with any of these though)
Beekeeping!!!
Scottish Gaelic
Welsh
Esperanto
Trying to learn some programming because I wanna dabble in mobile development
Godot (game engine)
Germanic & Norse heathenry, and some local folklore
Sewing
Getting much more into online privacy, security, and open source stuff
Things I’m involved in
Freesewing! Where I’m attempting to help adapt old timey pattern drafting books to work with their pattern drafting software. Join in if you’d like! :D
Tumblr media
See me struggle to code something functional on github if you feel like it, and if I ever get to it
Maybe check out my art website? It’s over at hornedmousestudtio.nl , I used to have a different one and then I forgot to renew my domain and such. So uhhh it’s still very under construction.
General Goals
Survive this schoolyear
Get vaccinated as soon as I physically can.
At some point I’ll hopefully become a teacher, or something in that direction.
Maybe do more art things?
finally learn to code so I can make that one app that I’ve been thinking about for so long
Maybe this year is the year I finally win nanowrimo
Why a studyblr?
I just really wanna get involved in the community again
Making friends!! or at least acquaintances :p
Hopefully this will help motivate me to keep studying.
I have opinions on some things, that I gotta just blurt out somewhere on the infinite void of the interwebs
What you’ll see here
Reblogged content
Probably some aesthetic-y things
Bujo stuff
Fibercrafts things?
Maybe some witchcraft and heathenry things too
Plant and gardening stuff?
ADHD studyblr things
A few shitposts probably
Mostly attempts at good vibes
(I’d like this blog to be a place where you can maybe take a break from all the things in the outside world. I wanna try to just no longer have any kinds of reblog bait or big news things or such going on on here. I’m on not here to feel miserable, I can continue participating in activism outside of hellsite dot org)
Original content
hopefully notes
planner pictures
desk setup stuff?
fibercraft related things
gardening stuff
probably heathenry stuff but in a studyblr vibes kind of way
I wanna make a short post series on how to get more open source stuff in your life, and also why it matters.
pictures of my chickens maybe?
Inspirations & cool mutuals
in no particular order
@studyfajr , @eintsein , @raebae-studies , @myhoneststudyblr , @upside-down-uni , @derflauschigstefuchs , @forensicscienceblr , @obsidianstudy , @softlystudying

The thing about an armhole and a sleeve is that the arm moves. You draft a pattern that looks really good when the arms are straight down at the sides and then you can't lift your arms. If you make it so that there is enough fabric on the back of the shoulder that you can cross your arms, then there is a baggy bit of fabric when your shoulders are straight. If you remove the excess fabric so there is no baggy bit, you can't reach your arms forward. Plus the titties are right there next to the front of the armhole, distorting the shape, and sure, you can add a bust dart, but that's a whole extra step. Better to just make dozens of test shirts with slightly different armhole and sleeve shapes in hopes of finding a perfect middle ground.

Hi! First of all, thank you so much for this blog! Second of all, do you have any tips or tricks for fitting mens clothing for people witha bigger bust area? I would love to thrift things like dress shirts and vests, for example, but thrift stores rarely have those in a shape fit for anyone but flat chested people. Are there any nifty cuts or things like that that I could use to make the clothes fit better?
Menswear and big busts
First of all: if you're ever planning making your own clothes from scratch, I highly recommend Freesewing.org. Rather than gendering their patterns, every pattern has a "with breasts" and "without breasts" option. The patterns can be customised to your personal measurements.
If you've got difficulties finding garments that fit one specific part of your body, it's usually recommended to look for items that fit this area and are too big in others so you can tailor it to your size.
Look for shirts/vests that fit your bust area: if they're too big in other spots, you can always take in the seams, add darts, or save up to have your item professionally tailored.
While focused on clothes with a flat bust, Stylish D is a good resource on how to tailor masculine clothes. Once you've found a shirt that fits your chest, he'll show you how to make the rest fit you too.
You can also try to upsize a garment by letting out the seams or adding fabric panels.

Dreamwidth update: PANTS
I just found out about freesewing.org and made myself some comfy trousers! They offer a bunch of customisable free sewing designs, including instructions. Once you make an account and enter in you measurements, you can download any of their designs altered to fit your shape. Which is hugely helpful for me, because I have unusual proportions that don't fit standard sewing patterns, and am not up to altering them myself. I'll put the rest of the details under the cut but before that, if anyone in Perth has recs for good cheapish fabric places that deliver I'd love to hear about them! ( Read more... )
