i think my biggest issue with the sequel trilogy is that it’s just such a textbook case of good ideas bad execution on practically every level in every movie and that makes me mad
#personal#star wars#i'm one hundred percent serious here#like tfa was definitely the highlight of that trilogy just because the set up was half the movie and that was good#like the idea that fascism can in fact return based on nostalgia and warped ideals and not as a tyrant but simply#a major political party#like the first order is clearly considered on par with the republic as just a facet of power in the galaxy before starkiller base happens#and the way that they were setting up kylo ren and the way it could be a commentary on how vulnerable kids can be#to things like exploitation and grooming and stuff like that#and just how COOL the concept of 'scavenger who's got a heart of gold and force sensitive stormtrooper who defects' were as characters#and poe of course was just a really good character#but they NEVER delved any deeper in that at all in any way#the last act of tfa wasn't good and then jj left without solving anything so rian had to try#(and i'm saying this as someone who likes rian johnson but finds tlj to just be a mediocre to bad movie)#and so you get good things like luke NOT being the classic star wars mentor but bitter and jaded#and the concept of rose tico as a character and the conflict between poe and laura dern's character#and the idea that rey ISN'T part of a secret special bloodline (tho there still should have been more explanation for why her parents left)#(like they abandoned her specifically because they thought she was force sensitive or smth)#but then also absolute horseshit like reylo (god gag me) and finn and rose's actual plot and basically the entire second half#and then jj comes back and writes the worst star wars movie ever made and retcons basically everything#and butchers basically everything and is basically public enemy number two to me now (behind jon favreau for his lion king crimes)#so anyway yeah literally good ideas but extremely shitty execution all around (and i maintain that kylo should not have been an only child)

The bell rang to signal the end of the match. Y/N sat on her knees with her fingers through her hair. All the training paid off. She was the new women's champion.
"The match is over, Michael Cole! We have a new champion! Y/N has brought the women's title back to Judgment Day!" Pat McAfee announced at the commentary table. The commentators watched in awe at the new champion. She looked nothing like what they had just seen on RAW. Tonight, she went all out, and she had everything to show for it.
Y/N could barely think over the deafening crowd at Backlash. She stood in the middle of the ring with a huge smile on her face. The ref raised her hand as happy tears slid down Y/N's cheeks. The women's title was coming back to Judgment Day, where it belonged.
The referee presented the belt to her. She slowly took the belt from him. Y/N kissed the belt and raised it high in the air with one arm. The crowd cheered loudly for her once more.
Y/N turned to leave the ring, but Liv was in front of her with her hand out. The two women put each other through hell the past few weeks. A simple handshake could squash the beef between them. With a weary smile, Y/N took her hand to shake it. Liv shook her hand yet pulled her close.
"Don't get too comfortable. You have a target on your back, and Mami will betray you," Liv warned her. The new champion rolled her eyes.
"She would never betray me. I brought the title back to its rightful place. You held her back,"
The laugh that Liv produced caused her skin to crawl. "Watch her,"
Y/N pulled her hand away and started to walk to the top of the ramp. As a face, she started to high five fans that reached their hand out. A few times, she stopped to take quick pictures with the fans. This must be what cloud nine felt like.
Once backstage, she was met by HHH first. He congratulated her and hugged her close. A quick picture was taken of the two before he had to get back to work. Dom and Finn were next.
"Way to do the Judgment Day proud, Y/N," Finn spoke and pulled her in a hug. "You made Rhea proud. Nice new look, by the way,"
Damian walked towards them. He easily towered over them. His normal serious look washed away once he saw how happy Y/N was.
"You know you are going to have a lot of challengers for that title. I think we should train together," Damian offered. Y/N blushed and looked away. A huge grin crept up on her face.
"I think we should too, Dam," Y/N agreed, unable to hide her crush on him.
Over the next several months, Y/N was able to beat anyone who stood in her way. All the women were adamant that they would be the one to take the title from her, but they all met the same fate as the last.
Damian stood by her side through it all. They eventually became closer and started dating. Rhea's long reign was seemingly forgotten, and Y/N was the new leader of the women's division. It all came crashing down once her mentor came back.
"I'm so glad you are back, Rhea," Y/N smiled and hugged her backstage. Rhea returned the hug, yet things felt off. The simple act of affection no longer had the same feel it once did.
"I'm glad to be back, Y/N. You are making quite the name for yourself out here," Rhea commented.
"And I only have you to thank for it," Y/N agreed. She looked at the time and sighed.
"No need to thank me, darling. You are certainly talented," Rhea complimented and patted her shoulder.
Y/N started to get waved at by production. She sighed and gave Damian a quick peck on the lips and hug. "I gotta go to the ring. See you guys soon,"
The protégé excused herself and took off to release an open challenge. Rhea watched her leave. Damian could see the look in her eyes. Mami wasn't happy.
"You know, she did a lot while you were away," Damian started. Rhea looked up at him. "Y/N kept the women's division in check while you were away,"
"Yeah, well, Mami is home now, and it's time Y/N learned what that means," she told him. They had a brief staredown before Rhea walked to be the next challenger in Y/N's reign.

full size color image here and img desc in alt text. based on this post by @lizznotliz with additional commentary from @fireandwonder, requesting the trio cosplaying as the star wars sequel trilogy triad for a convention. hardison has extremely passionate opinions about the movies and shamelessly "fixes" their cosplay by mainly making finn and poe the lightsaber wielders while rey has the force but does not utilize it beyond marital arts. this is because in hardison's version (aka, according to his 225k jedistormpilot canon rewrite that has several long-form, suspiciously detailed pwps in the verse), finn is the main character and true hero, poe represents the resistance and is fueled by their passion, and rey is not some suddenly magical scion.
there are a couple of people who dare to whisper under their breaths about how they missed the opportunity to have a more aligned "look" with canon, but parker gives them death glares. i just think hardison would not give up the chance to act as a character with a droid companion who also rides a x-wing and can fawn over finn. parker appreciates finns straightforwardness and quest to be good despite coming from a complicated background. eliot likes finn as well but hardison was like ARMS, let the world see YOUR ARMS babe.
eliot's hair started off perfectly straightened, but every once in a while when the crowds around has cleared, hardison will yell out showtime showtime, forming a circle. eliot rolls his eyes but also does some demonstration with his staff. sometimes parker joins in with some admittedly ooc but very cool acrobatic poses with her pistol.

i watched season 1 and caught up with season 2 of mashle in like a day and a half
blame bling bang bang born, that opening is so fucking catchy that i guilt-tripped myself into watching the anime because it didn't feel fair to stream without at least watching the first ep
i don't regret it this anime is like really fun im surprised
the casual eugenics??? everyone without magic is unworthy and deserves to die because it is unnatural and goes against the blessings of god?
you would think since lack of magic keeps finding its way into the gene pool and subsequent offspring these people would do more soul searching and question it!
I also think its really interesting how everyone suffers in the eugenics society, it is not just having magic, you have to have good magic otherwise you are just as worthless as the nonmages. You may hold yourself to a higher standard and think yourself superior but you are essentially still trash. Having magic isn't enough you have to be perfect all the time. Everyone suffers even the talented mages cause the slightest imperfection means you are lesser than dirt. You can't tell me this world is happy and blissful when anyone slightly out of the ordinary lives in fear of someone coming to strangle them in the night.
the story also acknowledges this there are tons of people who think they are superior to mash because they have magic even when they themselves are incredibly weak. like shoutout for commentary on racism and racial supremacy on how the weakest of people will act prideful and egotistical at the chance to walk over others.
i love mash, he's cute, i find his empty-headedness endearing i thought i would grow tired of his gimmick but I am pleasantly entertained. he's the realest guy ever
I ADORE LEMON SHE IS SO GOOD SHE IS SO PERFECT i love girls with a loose screw SHE IS SOOOOO GOOOD I LOVE YOU
finn has to be the straight man in a comedy anime and i mourn for him but he's cute as well
i forgive lance, i know i shouldn't but he's also kind of funny i'll ignore his siscon nature for my sake and his as well
dot surprised me like i was really expecting a crazy hot-headed incel weirdo but he's very respectful towards woman and for that you I rock with you! I also like how he plays the straight man role with finn like out of the boys in terms of self-awareness it goes mash > lance > dot > finn and thats neat
does mash have two dads...did that cop turn into his second father...
this is just ha*** po**** but that's okay im not mad
the magia lupus? yeah i cringed every time they came on screen I can't handle that blood purity speech at my age. I always remember reigen's (mp100) speech at the end of season 1. you're not special cause you have magic you're human just like everyone else here! GROW UP
speaking of them, they're kind of neat at least love, abyss and abel. they're cute im a sucker for rivals turned friends
rayne...i might have feelings for you
i was scared rayne was gonna be a dick when he appeared but he happily surprised me he is so sweet to mash thats great i love that and he's super cool and strong i respect that. I hope i see some brother moments with him and finn soon!!!
everyone has a specialty magic like is that innate? do they learn anything else or is their breed of magic just determined by their bloodline
i haven't even acknowledged cream puffs...thats okay too
i love how the main cast of friends is like "thank god im the only normal person here"
pretty good comedic timing i appreciate a healthy balance of humor and drama
i love how the cast moves to the beat of their own drum and i love teenagers rebelling against society! change da world my final message!

AT Last Episode Commentary (in real time)
Finn’s arm was in the ground, some random alien was wearing PBs crown, and these Finn and Jake reincarnates are living in Marcy’s house. This is making me upset
WHY IS BMO BRUNG THE KING OF OOO WHY IS SHERMY WEARING MARCYS SHIRT WHERE ARE MARCY AND PB THEYRE IMMORTAL. BMO DOESNT REMEMBER FINNS NAME I AM FEELING VERY UPSET RIGHT NOW
I love how Marcy said good luck that was really good voice acting
“I demand that you deescalate your forces, now”
“listen to yourself, you’re a toddler bonnibel”
*gasp* “SURRENDER OR DIE!”
LMAO JAKE JUST THREW A BOTTLE AND THEYRE ALL PASSED OUT NOW??
THE DREAM WORLD IS CRAZY
I love PB she’s so hot and smart and speaks another language
I wonder if the cosmic owl is gonna appear in the dream
omg I saw the cosmic owl and why did a fish just barf up pb and her uncle
Yay pb and her aunt are gonna be friends
omg they’re fighting the monster mutant thing
pls maja is STILL unconscious
LEMONGRAB AND LSP KISSING WAS THE LAST THING I COULD HAVE EVER IMAGINED PLS
“personal? Emotional? Just like a fanfic!”
“noo..”
Maja is awake! Omg that’s how Finn’s arm was gone
omg it’s THE BUBBLINE SCENE
they kissed for at least 3 seconds before the scene changed, and were still holding each other after 🥺 it must’ve been so wonderful and tender and hopeful to have seen that air on screen as a kid. When I see lgbtq stuff/shipping it’s so normalized (in my experience) I forget how simply meaningful that scene was, just two years after gay marriage was legalized. It feels so innocent to see them just love, it must’ve been life changing. I really wish I could’ve seen that on TV, I wish my first exposure to queerness was just something as innocent as a cartoon.
Not to say that the way I found out was inappropriate, but having a classmate come out when I was 11 and then going on tiktok to try and understand isn’t exactly how I’d prefer my future kids to learn. I look back on that memory and it feels really technical and full of words I didn’t fully understand, a cartoon directed at kids would’ve made more sense to me lol
back to the commentary
THE TREEHOUSE WAS DESTROYED NO
BMOS FACE IS CRACKED WHY, HES SINGING THATS SO SWEET
omg FINALLY Marcy and PB are back in the game like they just stood there, they’re all singing together
simon is back but Betty is gone, SHELBY? Why did Gunter wish that pls also shouldn’t Marcy be burning in the sun? It’s so sad that simon is gonna die someday tho, ig it is better for him to die as himself rather than live forever as a madman
omg it’s sweet pea but he’s giant now, AGAIN. WHERE ARE PB AND MARCY IN THE FUTURE IK THEYRE ALIVE BC OF COMICS (are the comics canon??) omg no, no no it’s the freaking song hole. I’m actually crying now I’m so serious
It took almost a full 2 months, but I have officially watched Adventure Time. All I can do is thank the lord I’m doing this in 2024 where there’s AT: Distant Lands and Fionna and Cake to watch right afterwards. Imagine if I did this before 2020 it’d be so heart wrenching that I had nothing to fill that void

Getting pissed off by Glee IKAG years on
Am I late to the party? I feel like I am. Oh well I’m here, I’m gonna vent, sit down and pour yourself a drink and let’s get to it. I guess I’m doing this.
Basically, this is me trying to take this episode, look at the justifications, and comprehensively complain provide a thorough, reasoned critique so that I never have to think about it again.
Trigger warnings for discussion of homophobia, outing, and brief mentions of attempted suicide
Season 3 is my favourite season of Glee, just to set the context. I’d say that’s a controversial opinion, but from what I can gather Glee fandom doesn’t actually agree on anything, so hey. Every character gets something to do beyond sit in the background, there’s a lot of good arcs, good ship content, fantastic songs, better jokes, stronger pathos, better ongoing storylines...
And then Santana gets outed. The one saving grace is that it just lasts for an episode, so you can grit your teeth and not need to deal with a long-term mess. But yeah, here we are.
The Beginning
So let’s set the stage. Santana is, admittedly, harsh to Finn for an episode, and he retaliates by outing her. I’ve seen some commentary trying to downplay this and... eh, no. “Everyone already knew,” clearly isn’t the case when there were actual, direct consequences to Finn yelling that in the hallway. So, that happens.
I... don’t hate the idea of that storyline, but there’s context, and that context is that it’s 2022. I watched Glee this year, not when it was first on. I’m existing in a time where if I want to watch a show with queer characters, I have options. So tackling a more serious, dramatic topic is not outside of Glee’s wheelhouse, and nowadays that being dealt with as a plot, and not put out of reach, feels reasonable.
But at the time? I cannot comment on that, just by my perspective, but having one of the biggest, and only, lesbian characters on a mainstream show outed feels like it carries significantly more weight that I simply cannot grasp. It goes from being ‘one story of many’ to ‘the story.’
So, we’re on dicey ground to begin with, though ground that will inevitably lack the same impact to me.
The Problem of Finn Hudson
So, Finn outs Santana. A lot of what I’ve seen indicates this made the character irredeemable in a lot of people’s eyes. I want to try and slowly untangle this.
So, in a vacuum... okay, he messes up here, but so does every character in Glee. This is the same season where Quinn tried to steal a baby. If it was just this, maybe in a better-handled episode, would people react the same way to Finn, or would he be forgiven in the same way Santana seems mostly to be forgiven for threatening to out Karofsky in season 2? Brushed off as ‘They matured’ or ‘Glee continuity is a mess and I do not acknowledge the bits that interfere with my enjoyment of the characters.’
Maybe, maybe not, that’s going to be personal. For me, like I said I inevitably lack the level of reaction to the plot that original viewers would have had. So, sure, for the purposes of this essay, let’s say I could forgive Finn if it was just this.
It’s not just this. And that’s where one problem really begins to rear its head.
In season 1, Finn hurls a slur at Kurt. And sure, Kurt wasn’t exactly coming off great before this, but it sets the tone. When Finn’s angry, he’ll cross lines there’s no need to cross - he could have yelled any number of insults, called Kurt a creep, but no, he went for a homophobic slur. But okay, jock teenager in a small town, it’s a mistake that can be made without active malevolence. Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt. A week later and he could have learned.
First of all, context. In season 1, Burt chews out Finn for this. In season 2,  Burt walks it back and brings up Kurt’s dubious behaviour, as though that somehow implies ‘Yeah, he got mad, used a slur, it happens.’ And in season 5, rather than not bring it up at all, it’s mentioned again as ‘oh, no, Finn was completely in the right to act like that.’ We’ll get back to this in a second.
In season 3, Finn outs Santana - he gets angry, and uses her sexuality as a weapon against her. He says the one thing he knows could hurt her, and it does.
Which sets this in stone as not a one-off ‘mistake,’ but a pattern of behaviour from Finn.
Finn faces no consequences, not in-universe, or in the narrative. When Finn messes up, the narrative will bring up said mistakes and walk them back, treat them as less of a big deal - some of this, I imagine, is dealing with fan reaction as Glee was clearly aware of its fanbase. Kurt comes off unsympathetic in S1? Okay, call that out. That’s good, so what happens when Finn messes up?
In season 4, Santana calls up Finn to help deal with concerns regarding Rachel’s boyfriend. (Also Finn assaults a sex worker, smooth. Yes there’s context, I don’t care I’m being petty right now). This would be a good time to have Santana maybe be wary, a quiet “Look, I still have issues,” a follow-up in the same vein as Burt walking back his comments on Finn’s slur-usage. But nope, nothing, Santana and Finn are friends apparently. No complication, no drama, no acknowledgement of fan outcry.
Finn messes up, does something awful, and the narrative refuses to call him out on it, and yet it will acknowledge other fan complaints if it means Finn gets to look better.
So, yeah. I was pissed off even with all my context thrown in. I cannot imagine what this must have been like at the time.
There’s a clear double standard here, and it’s a problem. It’s hard to really engage with the plot without noticing a major disconnect between not just how the characters react vs how they ought to, but between how each character involved is treated by the narrative. Santana deserved and deserves so much better than she gets here.
The end result, even if we ignore the character favouritism, is a lack of closure - and while that may not be inherently a bad thing, in this case I feel it very much is. It feels unintended, and it feels like anyone frustrated or angered by this decision goes ignored because with no consequences and no resolution, there’s nowhere for that anger to go.
And for the final cherry on top of context, I Kissed A Girl is episode 7 of season 3, in which a character gets outed. Seven episodes later, episode 14 of season 3, is On My Way, in which Karofsky deals with the consequences of being outed with significantly more gravity. Yeah. Not something you can just brush off, Glee.
It’s Not About You
I Kissed A Girl, the episode tackling the fall-out of Santana being forced out of the closet, is not about Santana Lopez.
That’s baked into the episode from the get-go, and it means it’s dead on arrival as a compelling story. I wish I knew what the heck they were thinking. But yeah, that’s where we are, so let’s look at it.
The titular storyline is one of several in the episode. We have the student council storyline continuing, more of Puck and Shelby, and then we have the Glee club facing up to what happens. And it’s Finn insisting everyone sing a song to cheer Santana up, despite her evident discomfort, so 10/10 there for ignoring her boundaries twice over.
But yeah, it’s about Finn. Everyone comforts Santana, and we get none of her reaction, none of her thoughts, just her eventually accepting the comfort - naturally, Finn’s comfort - and happy ending? Somehow?
Santana’s subject to homophobic harassment, and we get the title song sung by the Glee club, and it’s one where Rachel headlines because it’s about the club’s reaction to having a lesbian member. Yeah, the lead up isn’t even Santana getting a biting remark, it’s the Glee club banding about her. It’s not about Santana’s reaction to living with this, it’s about how good everyone else is to help her.
There’s not really any denying that Glee is heavily inspired by the kind of inspiration porn rep of, for example, disabled characters in other media - that kind of thing runs throughout all of Artie’s story and the initial depiction of Becky, and there was a Rachel episode in season one, etc. It’s one of the throughlines, and it’s hard to not see the similarities here - when a character departs from the ‘typical,’ the plot isn’t about their life, it’s about how everyone around them reacts and deals with having them as a friend. Glee has rep, and in a lot of ways it is groundbreaking rep especially for the time and honestly, to a degree, even nowadays. But that comes packaged with the fact it’s representation from an outside perspective.
This isn’t about the outed lesbian, it’s inspiration porn for the people around her, convincing them all to come together. The parallels stick out to me. Rather than give her a story, she’s used for the benefit of others, from Finn, to the rest of the club.
And it’s a genre that has been rightfully criticised time and again as ultimately just using the people it professes to lift up.
Okay sure, let’s talk about song choice
Glee recontextualises songs all the time. One of the highlights of season 1 is Kurt’s rendition of Rose’s Turn, a song from a musical whose title is a slur and isn’t that just on-brand for Glee at this point? In the musical, it’s sung by an overbearing mother whose daughter’s basically had enough of her. In Glee, it’s sung by a gay kid scared he’s not enough for his dad. Totally different context, and meaning... and it works.
So taking Katy Perry’s ‘I Kissed A Girl,’ a song about kissing girls for the attention of boys, surely this is something Glee could put in a new context? The lead-in to the song is the Glee girls defending Santana, and responding with “We don’t care if you think we’re gay, that’s not a bad thing,” and the show at least is conscious enough to keep the ‘Hope my boyfriend doesn’t mind’ lines out of Santana’s mouth (and in Rachel’s which is. unintentionally hilarious but hey). So that’s that, right?
God, I wish. For starters, it just feeds more into the issue of ‘the episode is not about Santana.’ The focus is so completely on the rest of the club and how they deal with being friends with an out lesbian and, y’know, not the lesbian herself. And even without that not-so-minor detail... Yeah, this song has way too much baggage in the queer community to ever use in this context, god no.
I don’t know what was happening behind the scenes. I want to say it was the network pushing them to include a massive pop song with a sapphic title, there’s definitely a lot of points where the network clearly pushed for a chart-topper, but I can’t say for sure.
This is not a song Santana should ever have sung.
And it’s not even my least favourite in the episode. For that, let’s check in again with one Mr Hudson.
I can mount a half-hearted, not-remotely-sufficient defence of the thought process behind I Kissed A Girl. I cannot even begin to fathom how ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’ not only made it into the episode, but got treated somehow as an emotional moment, or even somehow Finn’s apology. Full props to all the actors involved for somehow staying in character.
(Tangent: props to Blaine and Kurt. Perfect both fills the role of being a comfort-song, and “Welcome to my silly life,” is a great lyric for the situation).
But no, it’s this song that somehow has Santana feel touched, somehow? The song that offers no comfort, has no relevance, and if you try to make it relevant it just comes off as Santana just being belittled for several minutes straight. ‘Having fun’ is not the turn of phrase to use.
Which exposes the flaw of the episode all over again - Finn shouldn’t be the one to reach her. People talk about Brittany needing more of a role, and yes that as well, but Blaine and Kurt feel like a good choice as well. Kurt left the school because of the homophobia, he’s maybe not going to know exactly Santana’s experiences, but he’d be in her corner. There’s a lot of people it could be. But no, it’s Finn, the one that outed her, because it’s his story - it’s his ‘redemption’ arc, with Santana as a mere step on the way.
I guess, for completeness’ sake, I should talk about Constant Craving. It’s a fantastic cover, and I know some people object to it being juxtaposed with Shelby, but my take is more than it’s Santana’s midway point. I think it’s easy to view her as still not completely sure or comfortable yet - she’s had a heck of an awful episode, being forced out the closet isn’t going to make anyone comfy, and ‘craving’ isn’t necessarily the word one goes for when one is totally confident and content with one’s own desires. From that perspective, I have no issues with it. I just wish Santana got a follow-up. Plus, y’know, an episode of her own.
The saving grace isn’t so good
As I said at the start, the saving grace is that this is only there for one episode. You can forget it ever happened easily enough. In the long run, this isn’t even the arc that bothers me the most in the show - because it’s one episode. Bingewatching, as I did, it occupies such a small amount of my overall time with the show.
As an episode, there’s plenty of stuff that isn’t dealing with the mishandled plot, good song covers, fun character beats for everyone else. It’s just that none of it has anything to do with Santana. As an episode, on its own merits, it isn’t my least favourite of the show at all - but that storyline, and how it’s handled, is undeniably one of the nadirs of Glee.
Which for me, is kind of the whole problem. I like this season, and part of the reason I do is that the worst parts, for me, occupy so little time. And at the same time, part of what makes the worst parts as bad as they are, is precisely because they occupy way too little time for the show to do them justice.
You can forget it ever happened, if you want. That’s the honest truth. Glee, as a show, often does use its heightened nature to get away with ‘Don’t necessarily take this literally.’ If you did, I’m pretty sure every character ought to be in prison. There’s a wealth of things that don’t get treated with the seriousness they really ought to be - let’s not forget Sue threatening to pull out Artie’s teeth at prom, that happened. The show will take physical violence seriously sometimes, and not at all others, and that’s just part of Glee. So if thee’s a scene or stretch that genuinely makes you feel uncomfortable, Glee brings with it the easy option to just deny it and file it away with the crack houses and sex tapes and supervillain cats.
If you treat the episode as nothing but a bad taste Tina dream sequence, absolutely nothing about the rest of Glee is affected.
That’s what makes S3 still bearable, to me. And it’s also the biggest condemnation you can give it - this isn’t a one-off joke, this is a major point in Santana’s arc, a topic Glee itself acknowledges later can be life-ruining especially in a town like Lima, and it’s brushed over. Forgotten about. There’s no closure for viewers that identified with Santana, no sign of this being acknowledged as the big deal it was, and ultimately it gets treated with as much significance as that time Blaine made a sentient puppet.
Santana can be cruel, and she was to Finn. The worst thing she said, he’d likely forget about by the end of the day. The thng he did in response could get her killed - something Glee itself acknowledges several days later.
Blithely forgetting and moving past this is not something that should be expected. And yet it’s what the show does.
So that’s my IKAG rant to join what I imagine is a long tradition of similar vents.

The "Woke" Agenda: Fear the Queer
Tumblr media
Book banning's have unfortunately always been around in the United States. Just about any book can be removed from public library shelves if the public themselves deem it necessary, though in most cases a review process is used. Most people think of famous examples such as 1984 by George Orwell, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, or To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee when book banning's are brought up, and for good reason. These books were very divisive as they acted as a commentary for the systemic flaws of society, flaws few wanted to be reminded of. It is for this reason that these books are considered such important pieces of literature.
But what of modern banned books? Unfortunately, it is more of the same reasoning that originally banned the great classics, even if the topics of the books have changed. When observing the American Library Associations' (ALA) statistics for banned books, the most common themes are those of queerness and racial oppression. These themes are not listed as the specific reason behind why these books were banned, but instead were hidden behind labels such as “sexually explicit content”, “anti-police” rhetoric, profanity, or promoting violence. All of these labels become stretched and distorted under the eyes of angry parents, designed to evoke rage in the casual observer.
In one example from October of this year, a group of protesters numbering in the hundreds disrupted a public school board meeting in Dearborn, Michigan. Even after a heavy police presence, the meeting had to be canceled for safety reasons as the protests became more and more intense. The adults were described as screaming at the school board, booing, and generally disrupted any civilized discussion. Roxanne McDonald, the chairman of the board, even pleaded to the protesters, saying "Let’s show our children how to behave with civil discourse," to no avail. The books the protesters were targeting focused those with queer topics such as Flamer by Mike Curato and Gender Queer by Maya Kobabe. Fears of pornography and other "inappropriate" content were thrown around before the meeting ended.
This is a perfect example of the fear-mongering can quickly get out of hand. What many parents don’t realize is that there are likely hundreds of books in your high-school-aged child's library that have the themes they are protesting. New York Times bestselling book The Fault in Our Stars by John Green, a book rated 14 and up, even contains an explicit sex scene between minors. (the horror!).
This fact asks the question: if these books are not unique in their controversial themes, why are they being targeted? How did Gender Queer, a two-year-old graphic novel published by a now-defunct company, become one of the most challenging pieces of comic literature in modern America?
The answer comes from the examples of book banning where those involved manage to say the "quiet part" out loud. Jeremy Glenn, a superintendent from a Texas school district, is even being investigated by the federal government for discrimination after he was quoted in a leaked recording after he instructed the school districts libraries to specifically remove queer books.
“I acknowledge that there are men that think they’re women and there are women that think they’re men, I don’t have any issues with what people want to believe, but there’s no place for it in our libraries.”
Later in recording, Glenn clarified further saying, "It’s the transgender, LGBTQ and the sex — sexuality — in books." This excuse completely throws away the charade of "protecting the children from obscenity" as was obvious from the start of the book banning craze.
The fact is, the banning of books has never been about protecting children. The true reason is far more cruel:
Parents do not want their children to read diverse stories because they are afraid of them "becoming" queer, or, god forbid, woke.
It is blatant bigotry.
Luckily, the future isn't dark. Despite news cycles loving to talk about how much hate and disgust these parents have for those different then them, there are far more people speaking up in support of these books then against them. Many bookstores across the country have brought special attention to banned books, creates displays celebrating them. Organizations such as the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, the American Library Association, and the American Civil Liberties Union are all fighting to keep these important books on school shelves and available for everyone.
Every year that passes, despite trials and tribulations, I believe the world becomes a little safer and a little more welcoming. Books like Gender Queer could not exist 50 years ago, and hopefully in the next 50 years a majority of people will look back and think: How could anyone have hated this?

dvd commentary for this bit in reservoir??
“I hate you,” Bevan says to the black hole. “I know what you’re doing.”
The black hole outside their window turns, and is silent.
“You think you’re filling the empty parts inside of them, but you’re just taking more away,” Bevan says. “You’re taking them away from each other. You’re taking, and taking, and - what happens when nothing’s left? What are you going to eat? Why are you so hungry ?”
No answer. Bevan isn’t expecting one, not now and not ever. From their window, they can see the small shape of Finn, picking her way across the black sand beach.
HAHA YES THIS BIT. 2/3 of my published fics that have bevan as a featured character directly reference the fact that bevan once had the spirit of violence for a little bit because that makes me insane to think about. this specifically is a riff on a headcanon originated by i THINK @beelijah that bev sees the way the crabs act under the black hole and compares it in a really unfavorable way to what being possessed briefly by the spirit of violence felt like. i think ultimately the spirit of violence never really Harmed bevan and they got on fine with landry but they didn't love feeling out of control of themself/like a bystander in their own body ykwim
i also think personally that bevan struggled the most with the landry stuff when landry got released and went Away (in my hc released people get yeeted to the material plane where blaseball isn't real, none of that assistant coaching business) because they like. lost a connection they'd innately had for a long time with a force more powerful than them. and so i feel like they look at the black hole and see a force way more unreadable than landry, who was like. a guy and not a cosmic event that can't vocalize intent. and bevan worries a lot about what's going to happen when that cosmic event goes away and all the parts of the crabs that have shaped themselves around the black hole are left to try and exist on their own

Rey and her friends spend plenty of evenings in the (only) local bar. Their dancing is already much better than it was back on Batuu.
They point and jump, twist and turn, with more enthusiasm than skill, when suddenly Rey and Armitage feel their heads cast in an iron ring and their bellies act up. But it isn't a migraine attack...
Tumblr media
Rey: "Oh... oh, shit! It's Godmother again... *cough* Reaching..."
Armitage: "Quick, cover us from sight!"
Tumblr media
Poe: "And now Kira and Amos will show us the, uh, Victory Dance of the Battle of Jakku! It's very, uh, ethnic! If you look closely, you'll see Amos recreate the faces the strained pilots and gunners made during the fight. That's an especially endearing part of the performance!"
Armitage (through clenched teeth): "I'm endearing?"
Poe: “An especially gross and heart-rendering part, I meant to say!”
Tumblr media
Poe: "Moving in perfect unison is another key element of this dance. It reminds us of the maneuvers the Alliance pilots performed, each of them a unique individual, but united in their goal. - Ey, who am fooling here. Nobody."
Tumblr media
Finn quickly takes over. He tries to harmonize his movements with those of Rey, who is fighting Godmother trying to take control over her body.
Tumblr media
Poe: "What part of the show is this? Field medics carrying the injured to safety?"
Finn: "I don't know what's more scary - Godmother attacking us in public or your commentary making somewhat sense."
Poe: “It did...?”
Finn: *nods* “If there’s ever peace, and a job involving flying reminds you too much of the war, then you should try commenting. I’d love to listen to that.”
Poe: “Oh.” *smiling again* “Thank you!”
Tumblr media
In fact, Poe’s commentary would have fooled the intoxicated patrons. After fighting off the attack, the five could have left and none would have been the wiser what had really happened on stage. If not for Saskia Peddler, their already suspicious superior.
Peddler: “I could tell something was fishy about you. So you were Godmother’s agents all along!”
Armitage: “Not by choice. During the prison break she got hold of Rey’s and my minds and used us to break the truce between the Resistance and the First Order. Ever since, we’ve been picking up the pieces...”
Poe (to Peddler): “...what would be much easier without your interference, just saying. We already have Godmother to repel in regular intervals, there’s really no need to also fight against our allies.”

Smile (2022, dir. Parker Finn) - review by Rookie-Critic
Tumblr media
Smile almost had me. I wanna say all the way up until the final moments of the movie I was on board. It seemed to be a very effective horror movie highlighting the struggles of people who have been through trauma, and how childhood trauma stays with you and can eat you up inside. However, without giving too much away, in the last five minutes of the film the messaging seems to shift. What seemed like a very moving commentary about learning to face your trauma and your anxieties head on turned into a gimmicky, trope-y, frankly sickening ending that would make anyone who actually suffers from what the central character does, or just anyone who empathizes with her for that matter, feel incredibly alienated and othered. I'm not sure if Finn meant to send this incredibly awful message, I've seen at least one reviewer who interpreted the film as very surface level, so maybe I'm just reading too much into it, but it just didn't sit right with me, and the longer I sit on it the more angry I seem to be getting about it.
It's tough, because, as I said, for most of the film I was on board. The acting by Sosie Bacon, Kyle Gallner, and (although her screen time was very limited) Caitlin Stasey is very good, the scares are mostly effective, and the cinematography, while maybe a little flashier than needed, is unique and interesting. I will say that there are quite a few artificial jump scares here, moments that rely very heavily on a sound effect added in post to provide the scare, instead of letting the tension of the scene and something genuinely happening in frame create the "jump" instead (the film also has quite a few of these, so I guess they cancel each other out), and after awhile those artificial jumps grow tiresome. The film really shines in its opening sequence, where Stasey steals the entire spotlight. I hate to say it, but it is the best part of the entire movie. I don't want to give this a good score, because I really do hate what it seems to be saying, but I also can't ignore the parts that were well done. I wanted this to be good, I wanted to like it, but I just really, really don't. If you want my honest opinion, if you want to watch this, and you haven't seen The Babadook, just watch that instead. It's scarier, it deals with a lot of the same themes as this movie does in a much more tasteful way, and it's just a much, much better film about a very similar topic.
Score: 5/10
Currently streaming on Paramount+.
If you're at all neurodivergent, I would maybe advise against seeing this.

Movie Review Roundup – Horror for the Holidays: Smile / Nope / Fang
All ho-ho-hoed out? December brings award-bait movies, cinematic Christmas carols, and of course, a whole slate of feel-good Hallmark-style holiday romance flicks. But if you’re in the mood for spinechilling horror, I’ve got just the trio for you. Two are big screen hits that are new on disc this month, and the last one is an indie just now getting started on its festival run.
Tumblr media
Smile (Blu-ray)
After witnessing a bizarre, traumatic incident involving a patient, Dr. Rose Cotter (Sosie Bacon) starts experiencing odd occurrences that she can't explain. As an overwhelming terror begins taking over her life, Rose must confront her past in order to survive and escape her horrifying new reality. Trigger warning: dead cat.
I really enjoyed this movie; it’s well-acted, nicely shot, and the dread and suspense maintain throughout. And those wicked smiles… so creepy! The Blu-ray has director commentary from Parker Finn, deleted scenes, and more. Get Smile on Amazon.
Tumblr media
Nope (Blu-ray)
OJ (Daniel Kaluuya) and his sister Emerald (Keke Palmer) discover something sinister in the skies above their California horse ranch, while the owner of a nearby theme park tries to profit from the mysterious, otherworldly phenomenon. Trigger warning: dead horses.
Nope is a smorgasbord of half-baked ideas; mind you, they are cool, fun, and spooky ideas, but they’re not fully developed and the threads don’t quite come together. Despite the head-scratchers, Nope is an entertaining spectacle that I’ll watch again. The 50-minute behind-the-scenes featurette on the Blu-ray is sure to answer some questions, and the 4K image is beautiful. Get Nope on Amazon.
Fang (Festivals)
Tumblr media
Aspiring comic book artist Billy (Dylan LaRay) struggles to care for his ailing mother Gina (Lynn Lowry) as his job at a meat packing plant barely pays the bills… and haunts his nightmares. One night, Billy gets an unexpected visitor: a rat that springs out of his bathroom and bites him. A Cronenbergian body-horror story unfolds as the young man fights the rodent within him, comes to grips with his mom’s dementia, and to maintain what’s left of his shattered soul. Trigger warning: dead rat.
Fang is an indie from a first-time writer director (Richard Burgin) but you’d never know it—the acting is aces (particularly from LaRay and Lowry, whose chemistry as family is wholly believable), plus the saturated cinematography, jangly score, and disconcerting jump-cut editing style are perfect for this surreal story. In fact, the look and feel reminded me of gritty, unadorned 70s and 80s indies like Shivers (starring Lynn Lowry) and Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (but this is not nearly as brutal). Follow Fang’s festival run via Burgin’s Facebook.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again!!!!!!!
I don’t understand why everyone in the 100 fandom hates Finn???????
he was a kid raised in an incredibly hostile and violent environment (death penalty for any breaking of the rules. Solitary confinement if under 18, with likelihood of being sentenced to death upon turning 18) and you know what this kid wanted??? PEACE. He wanted to change!!!!
“bUt he chEAteD on RavEN!!” he was a dumbass 17yo who had been practically living with Raven for his whole life, and was very happy with her (he was willing!!! to take the punishment for her spacewalk!!!! he wanted nothing but happiness for her!!!!) but do you think this boy ever had a chance to know anything else? Of course not!! And so then he meets Clarke, who is also amazing, and Finn realizes that while he loves Raven... he loves Clarke!!! He was 17!!!! He didn’t know what love was!! He probably still didn’t when he DIED!!!!
“But hE DIdn’T TeLL ClaRKe!!” of COURSE HE DIDN’T!!!! Life on the ground was insane!!!! They all expected to die like every 30 seconds, and were being attacked by strange people AND each other AND he was trying to change an entire society of people and figure out just what peace/non-violence looked like when he himself had never actually known it, other than the fact that he wanted something different!!! So why on earth (pun intended) would he throw a wrench between him and Clarke???
I fully believe he intended to tell Clarke about Raven, just as he fully intended to end things with Raven, but these kids were literally dodging near-death on the regular and terrified out of their minds, so sorry he wasn’t absolutely perfect??? Sorry he wasn’t “cool” or “edgy” or “willing to be violent” like every single other character. Sorry he tried to do better!!! And sorry he failed!!!!!
I don’t even think Finn is in my top 10 fav characters on this show, but I have nothing but sympathy for him and what he wanted to achieve.
[there’s another post in here about how Finn and Lincoln are incredible characters for how they defy their societies conditioning for violence/rejection of the unknown, and their mutual longing for peace.]
