Random question! Do you think it would be less stereotypical if Charlie and Vaggie’s personalities were switched? I loved that the Latina girl wears a dress and a cute bow. I want Charlie to protect Vaggie more and help her with more things. Like it seems stereotypical that the white girl needs someone else to manage her own project although I think the Latina girl was being coached in a sweet way and protected more, it would be nice. Hopefully the rest of the show will fix this. I love Charlie however I think some of her traits (while very refreshing for a demon) come across badly when we consider her gf. Does that make sense? I’m not Latina myself so if anyone has a different opinion just ignore me.

Well, Vaggie’s fashion sense was never an issue, while I applaud Spindlehorse for avoiding the “butch-femme” lesbian stereotype, Vaggie just looks more bland compared to the rest of the cast.

However, I don’t think switching their personalities would improve their problematic dynamic. Thing is, Charlie is at fault for lacking any solid personality while Vaggie’s only trait seems to be angry and control freak. These two gal pals lack depth, unlike the other main male characters, so switching them around wouldn’t absolve the other issues such as princess-subject power dynamic, age difference, why one needs protection and the other doesn’t, and so-forth.

It seems like the focus is too much on the fact that Vaggie comes off as a negative ethnic stereotype instead of her actual personality, which has not been properly portrayed in the pilot or in supplemental material. And Charlie is so bland that people already don’t like her because all we know is she’s kind of a fool and feels bad no one takes her seriously, but none of her actions show that she takes her own project seriously.

The few minutes of Hazbin Hotel has better queer representation than 90% of hollywood productions

First off, I’d like to say that I’m basing this off of the first few animated shorts that are available as of October 8th, you can watch them here. These were made by VivziePop and her wonderful team. While I’m confident that they’ll do a wonderful job, its possible that with more developments my points here will become invalid.

With that out of the way, I’d like to address the main characters of this show, the protagonist Charlie, her lover Vaggie, and their client Angel Dust. While some might claim that these characters, especially Angel Dust, are over sexualized and thus bad representations. If this was a sit-com or some normailzed setting, I would agree, but this is hell baby. I would argue that the setting is what is sexualized, as hell is represented as a sinful red light district, and Angel Dust implies that he is actually very well respected, coming off as more of a mafia madam than an “boy, do I like cock” gay friend. Charlie, for her part, is absolutely not sexualized, and while that may well change in the future, not reducing your lesbians to fetish material upon introduction is probably step one in queer representation.

Now, lets talk for a bit about Vaggie and Charlie. I’ve seen posts on this site claiming that well-written relationships shouldn’t need PDA’s or wild declarations to be recognizable, and I always thought that this was difficult to do in a short period. Yet here these two are, much closer than just a manager and a client, Vaggie is shown to genuinely care for Charlie’s dream, doing her best to help. Her supporting Charlie’s ambitions when the world is against her is such a genuine form of love that would have been under cut if the characters spent half their screen time making out or talking about generic “woman things”. Also, bonus points for wearing trendy clothes, dresses, and tuxes without it being a butch or femm thing.

Now, allow me to describe to you how important the casting of Michael Kovach as the voice of Angel Dust was for me.

Having never had much to do with the fandom other than liking what I’d seen of VivzePop, when I loaded up The Spider in Kinky Boots, and I saw this character obviously get thanked by a John, I was pretty unimpressed. “Wow, a sexy prostitute in hell. Original.” I was expecting Poison Ivy or Mystique, maybe a bad Harley Quinn, then he spoke. Now I’m sure even when they decided to make Angel Dust male, when they made him a drag queen, they were probably expected, maybe even told, to give him that voice, you know the one, the gay voice. Now I have nothing but love for Queens, but in hollywood there are two kinds of gays, either they use that voice and act flamboyant, or they’re “trying to be normal” and either are struggling with the fact that they’re gay, or hiding it entirely. When Michael spoke, I was blown away, but I felt like a shouldn’t have been. The voice fits his character very well, and if you took away the sexuality and just left the rest of the sneakiness and hedonism, you’d probably expect a voice like that.

I just feel that more characters should be using things other than their sexuality to define them. No matter how brave a character is from a queer standpoint, it’s important for them to be an actually good character as well. In conclusion, don’t be a gay queen who likes killing and drugs, be a psychotic, drug-fueled, sass-filled boss, who also fucks men.
