A Message from the NaNoWriMo Board of Directors

Dear NaNoWriMo Community Members,
Thank you for reaching out to us with your inquiries about the forums, your support, offers to volunteer, and your legitimate concerns.
Our inbox has been flooded, and we appreciate all of the thoughtful responses from participants and volunteers who genuinely care about NaNoWriMo, our fellow writers, and the community as we do. It is impossible to respond to each message individually, but we wanted to let you all know we are working with purpose and sincerity.
Please see below the breakdown of the work that has been done since we last shared an update with the community. Our intention is to keep you abreast of all we are doing to make NaNoWriMo a better, safer, place:
We’ve overseen a full-scale review of business practices led by former Board Member, Kilby Blades, who has stepped in to assist the organization on an interim basis.  
We’ve begun to implement new procedures around community safety, including:
Full revision and legal review of our employee handbook and codes of conduct.
Full revision and legal review of our Municipal Liaison(ML) agreement.
Development of a formal contract agreement for all (non-ML) Volunteers.
Development of a stricter vetting process for all volunteers (which includes identity verification and background checks, wherever necessary).
Licensing of a digital constituent management system that will enhance volunteer management capabilities.
Comprehensive background checks for all current employees.
Checks and balances to ensure that standards of conduct and ethics are adhered to (e.g., better leadership training, volunteer training, tech mechanisms, and active oversight).
We’ve made staffing changes and revised our staffing plan.
We have rescoped certain roles and initiated some staffing changes. (However, certain employees who left the organization voluntarily are in pursuit of their next opportunities.)
We believe that learning from this moment through addressing skill gaps in the organization is healthy and we will go through a hiring process to fill necessary gaps in open roles.
We’ve listened to other community feedback and are still in listening mode.
We’ve disabled the mechanism on the YWP website that allows users to self-identify as educators for the purpose of creating classrooms, and we are researching mechanisms that will allow us to verify adults as educators.
We’ve revised our technology roadmap to address usability issues and are hoping to introduce new features in 2024.
We are midway through a deep dive on forums and forum moderation; this has included benchmarking with other organizations with similar challenges.
In February, we will hold focus groups for continuing MLs. We are also thinking through the logistics of Town Hall meetings and other gatherings.
We’ve processed dozens of pages of community member feedback and are integrating it into our thinking.
With the staffing changes mentioned above, we are open to hearing from those of you who have reached out with offers to help and/or be a part of the organization’s future. Get notified about future job opportunities at NaNoWriMo.

Anyways, I am so glad you liked University Superstar! I honestly did not expect it to get so popular and I feel so grateful that it's gotten such positive feedback.
Your drabble request has been written, and I have turned to dust at the pure cuteness of this situation.

Your students are going absolutely ape shit. They're screaming and jumping and breaking crayons and tripping over their 2-foot high desk chairs. It's absolute chaos.
"Guys!" you yell, trying your best not to laugh at the little humans sprawling around your classroom. "Jungkook isn't going to show up during gym class if you don't behave and form a single-file line," you warn them. It's a total lie, but things like that work all the time with Kindergartners.
Your students look at you as if they just saw a ghost, some of them already running towards the door to form a line.
You press your hand to the back of some of your students, politely motioning them towards the almost formed single-filed line.
"Okay," you clap your hands together, a giant smile forming on your face. "Are you guys ready to learn how to play lacrosse?"
Some of your students nearly fall to the ground in excitement, all of them nodding their heads or verbally telling you that, yes, they are so fucking ready to play lacrosse.
Opening your art-covered door to your kindergarten classroom, you file them out as you guide them toward the gym. There's a pep in your step as you walk over. You can't lie that you're maybe just as excited as your students. Seeing your boyfriend and watching him teach? Please. Talk about a fantasy turning into reality.
The doors to the gym are heavy as you open them, the immediate smell of rubber and floor cleaner hitting your nostrils as you enter the gym.
In the middle stands your god of a boyfriend, Jeon Jungkook. He's wearing his jersey, showing off the famous number "07” he claimed when he made the team. One of his hands twists his lacrosse stick in his palm, the other coming up to run his fingers through his messy locks.
Jungkook flashes you a smile, his chest filling with excitement from seeing you at work. I mean, he's seen you at work, but not in this kind of way. Most of his visits to your workplace consist of him barging into your office and stealing all the candy on your desk.
But this is different. He's seeing you actually deal with the faces of those projects he accidentally destroyed not too long ago. He's seeing you conduct and guide and care for them as if they were your own. It's something he didn't know if he could ever really prepare for. But his heart nearly explodes as the crowd of children you brought behind you runs up to him, arms wide, engulfing him in a million tiny hugs.
"Woah!" Jungkook chuckles as they tackle him. "You guys are pros at defense."
You laugh before clapping your hands three times. Like little minions, they all stop their actions, repeating your three claps.
"Okay, everyone," you smile, coming next to Jungkook. "Criss-cross-apple-sauce against the bleachers, please."
"You're hot when you're working," Jungkook mumbles low to you. You smirk, jabbing at his side in warning to be careful with his mouth.
"I'm sure you all know who this is, yes?" you ask your students as you clap Jungkook's shoulder. They all nod, the verbal energy they had completely gone as they stare up at their idol. It's funny because they're all blushing, their little cheeks all red and eyes wide. It makes you smile knowing that Jungkook's completely won everyone's heart over...as well as your own.
"Okay, Jungkook is going to teach you, but I expect nothing but fair game and practicing safety rules, alright?" you warn them, mainly directing your words toward Jungkook, though. You've never seen him train or teach bodies under 5'11. This is just your little warning to him that if he dares to hurt a single hair on their head, he will burn in the 8th most painful ring of hell for the rest of his life. "I will be on the bleachers if anyone needs me," you smile, leaving Jungkook to the kids.
Jungkook gulps as you leave his side. This is more nerve-wracking than he thought. They're so tiny; their hands the size of his pinky. But they look up at him in complete infatuation as they wait for his instruction.
Jungkook clears his throat. "I'm gonna explain the rules, and whichever team wins gets to wear my jersey."
Your kindergarteners almost piss their pants out of excitement, impatiently waiting to be divided into teams to compete for the amazing prize. You flash a smile at Jungkook as he gives each kid either a number 1 or a number 2 as an assignment to either Team 1 or Team 2. Jungkook blushes as you wave at him from the bleachers.
You can feel the slight nervousness scrolling through his body. You wish you could go up to him and tell him he has nothing to worry about, that he's already won the hearts of your students a long time ago. But you stick with your distanced non-verbal communication until he's ready to teach them the rules of his beloved game.

The rest of the class is spent with a 'competitive' game that was scored at about 0-0 for nearly 45 minutes. Lacrosse is tricky, and Jungkook's explanations also suck. But given that he explains like a kindergartner, they eventually get it and the game ends with Team 2 scoring 2-3.
Your Team 2 students are berzerk, all of them running up to Jungkook like titans, waiting for him to give them the most 'valuable' prize they could ever receive.
Meanwhile, your Team 1 students are sobbing on the floor where they lost. You watch as Jungkook's concern immediately turns to the upset students, feeling bad for their loss. He's about to make his way over toward them, but you're already on your way. You nod at him, telling him that you've got it and that he should focus his attention on the group pulling at his sleeves.
"K-Kookie doesn't li-like me," one of your students, SeoYeon, screams into your chest after kneeling down to console her. You fight the urge to plug your ears as she wails into your embrace. A little something did catch your attention in her midst of a temper tantrum, however. Has your class started calling him Kookie?
Your thoughts are confirmed as DongHyun, another Team 1 contestant, comes to you and tugs at your shirt. His eyes are teary, but you want to squish his cheeks at the fact that he's trying hard not to let any of them fall. However, his nose gives his hurt away, as a big line of snot flows from his nostril to his upper lip.
DongHyung sniffs his obnoxiously long booger back into his nose as he speaks, "Ms. L/n? D-Do you think Kookie will let us wear his jersey? E-Even though we...lost?"
You want to explode at the fact that your students started calling him Kookie. Can this day get any cuter?
"Of course, DongHyun," you smile, wiping a tear from his eye. "Don't be upset. Kookie is a really fair person. He will give you a turn. You just have to be patient, okay?"
DongHyun nods before shaking his head aggressively, shaking away the tears filling his eyes. He then waddles off to comfort his other wailing friends, probably telling them exactly what you told him.
You let go of SeoYeon, telling her to go take a drink of water before making your way over to Jungkook. The man delicately places his jersey over the figures of your student's small bodies, taking a picture of each student as they pose in its oversized glory.
"I thought it would be a good idea to capture it so that they could remember this day in the future," he smiles, crouching down to take another picture of one of your students in his large jersey.
Your heart has done enough exploding today. But this? This made your heart burst into a million pieces out of pure endearment. The goal of the "What I Love About Me" project was for them to capture what they love about themselves as kindergarteners so that they can be reminded of their infatuation in the future. Jungkook creating a moment of the same intention pulls on your heartstrings to such a great extent, you find yourself pressing a small kiss to the crown of his head.
And then you realized you completely indulged. Jungkook's actions made you forget that he's not supposed to be your boyfriend in front of your students. You're stunned, and so is Jungkook.
Suddenly, the room is silent. There's no wailing, there's no cheering, there is nothing. For the next few seconds, all you hear is silence until one of your students points at you and screams,
"Ms. Y/n is dating Kookie!"

I applied to be a resident advisor. I’d worked for UK (University of Kentucky) in res-life in the past and had been preparing for this interview, and I had my RA tell me that she would give me a glowing recommendation. And the first interview went quite well.
My second interview started decently. The interviewer asked me my pronouns, which threw me off a little bit. I now see that as a kind of screening in and of itself, but we proceeded with the interview, and it seemed to go fine until I was asked where I had seen injustice and mistreatment at UK. At the time, the closest I’d come to that was my own work with Pro-Life Wildcats, but back then I knew not to bring up Pro-Life Wildcats with an interview at UK as they didn’t look overly favorably at our club. So, I said nothing. Despite that, the rest of the interview seemed to go quite well, but I was informed I was not being hired on and as an RA. I was in the alternate pool however, and I was offered the chance for a later interview to get feedback on what I'd done and what I'd done poorly.
And we started out the interview well, she was just giving me general feedback about my demeanour, she said I’d aced every part of the interview, the customer service, the quick response times, everything I'd done great on.
Except JEDI, UK’s version of DEI. At this point, I started to record the interview as Kentucky is a single party consent state, and I’m glad I did because the absolute insanity that I would be told for the next 15 minutes, I’m not sure I would believe it if someone had told me I would hear that. I would say no you’re making that up.
I was told that because I am white-presenting, I'd probably not had to think about how I present myself, unlike other non-white students. I had been told that as I didn’t have experience being an "other" - her words, not mine -- I hadn’t proven that I could relate to students who would be considered an "other." She then went on for several minutes to tell me about how she had processed George Floyd's death and how maybe I should’ve said something like that in the interview. And then she told me that maybe I should look at my current service work through the lens of DEI. Because this is the natural endpoint for DEI. Instead of just doing service work and treating everyone equally, you will look at people through the lens of race, ethnicity, sex and then you will have to prove to UK how much you care about those categories instead of how much you care about those people as individuals. You will bend the knee to DEI if you want to work at UK.
My next experience with DEI came from the classroom in my women’s literature course. The syllabus laid out by the TA said that no comments that were homophobic, transphobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic, antisemitic, sexist, ablest, classist or otherwise offensive, particularly to protected groups, would not be allowed on penalty of removal from the class for that day and loss of participation points.
As someone who believes that there are only two genders and that men cannot become women, this was problematic to me. So I went to speak with the professor and ensure that my First Amendment rights were going to be protected. I was assured as long as I didn’t use slurs in class, I would be fine. I don’t use slurs. This was an easy ask.
The class went on well, I was the lone conservative speaking up as it was a very liberal class, including the professor, but that was fine with me. I’m used to being in the minority on a college campus. Despite this, there did come an issue when the topic of gender was brought up. I again restated that I believe that there are only male and female, as there are, and while I was never pulled aside in class or outside of class, I was then sent email from that professor who told me that I wasn’t recognising the "humanity" of the other students in class. And as such, I had the broken the UK Code of Conduct, which is a serious offence.
And it’s actions like these that are taken at UK to try to force people to bend the knee ideologically and force them to not speak about really believe. I even had a student in that class come up to me and say, "hey, I’m pro-life too. Thank you for speaking up. I can’t speak up because I know what will happen to me."
So, I would encourage everyone to pass this bill and stop these discriminatory practices that are being snuggled in through DEI.

I’m the All Star Survey Analyst, which means that I conduct social research to recognize trends, collect feedback, and determine common denominators between any given group of people. The hardest part is getting people to actually take the Survey, but I wouldn't be an All Star if I couldn't do that. In today's modern world, technology is one of the main sources of intelligence that has made many people's lives easier. As Adam Nanjee states, "Technology is the new English" , so every person needs to use this Artificial Intelligence (AI) just to keep up with the flow of life and comprehend this advanced society. However, this amazing invention was abused by many students, as it became a tool used to cheat, plagiarize, bully, and spread misinformation. That's why many individuals are always asking, Is technology really helping students, or is it just promoting students to become lazier and to do dishonesty?
Before diving into the negative sides of students' technology use, we should first explore the beneficial aspects. As we all know, technology has made communication more convenient. Additionally,Information transactions are quicker, and vital data may be found at any time and from any location. This type of benefit has a significant impact on learners since it allows them to readily access material needed for research and reports; you will no longer need to sift through huge books to get a few facts for their activities. Furthermore, you don't have to make schedule when and where you'll meet up with your group mates, it will be easy to hold chats with them using online messengers. It will also be easier to distribute messages and announcements that require reading and provide feedback from readers to senders. In short, technology is one of the reason why this much human needs can be access without an effort and not time consuming.
Aside from that, we should talk about it not only in the online education module, but also in the classroom, because most schools today use technology like televisions and computers. According to studies, students become more active in the classroom as a result of technology since gadgets encourage them. Despite the fact that technology motivates students to become more active, technology also provides many benefits to teachers, such as making it easier and faster to create visual aids such as PowerPoint slides that need to be shown to the class, and they can design the slides based on how the teacher uses creativity to capture his students' attention. To summarize, technology provides numerous benefits not only to students but also to teachers, and not only through online mediums but also in classrooms.
This advancement, however, was abused by some students who used it in a negative way, such as cheating.According to a new BestColleges blog, "study of 1,000 current undergraduate and graduate students, utilizing AI technologies to complete coursework and examinations counts as cheating or plagiarism. Two out of ten (20%) people disagree, while the remainder are neutral.Overall, 43% of college students report having used AI technologies such as ChatGPT. Half (50%) of individuals who have used AI say they utilized it on assignments or exams. This figure represents 22% of all respondents in our poll, implying that one in every five college students uses AI to do their assignments". In this statistic, it is true that some students mistreat this intelligence; they utilize it to plagiarize and take other people's work without giving credit to the original author, and then apply the AI to their personal work. As a result, these student activities demonstrate that technology promotes lazy behavior.

It has had a significant impact on society, requiring all researchers to publish their studies at no cost in order to provide the information that we require.In contrast, most of our students did not know how to conduct adequate research or determine whether or not the material was true, which is why disinformation is so common on social media platforms, causing many people to believe it. Furthermore, in our day and age, black propaganda has gone viral on the internet, leading pupils to believe if they do not know how to fact check. It is easy to share them with others and swiftly distribute them.According to research on the percentage of students that share misleading information,"60% of students admitted sharing false news online,41% of students have commented on or reported inaccurate information that they have read online in order to expose it,80% of students claimed that they would not release an inaccurate statement online if the benefit of doing so was a gain of followers on their desired social media platform,45% of students said that they rarely check suspicious news material which they see online".
Besides from cheating, misinformation ,and fact checking, one of the most disturbing ways students use technology is to bully others. All people interact and make friends on social media by chatting and posting some of their photos, but the problem is that many people, mostly young students who are influenced by the toxicity of this virtual world, are doing some actions that symbolize cyberbullying such as bodyshaming and faceshaming in the comment section, which can have a significant impact on the victims. According to statistic of Josh Howart about cyberbullying, " Middle school-aged cyberbullying victims are almost twice as likely to attempt suicide than non-victims". This study demonstrates that cyberbullying towards young people is becoming more serious and difficult to control.
Similarly, those are some of the major acts that students engage in when using technology that must be addressed as soon as possible since they can lead to an uncontrollable scenario. However, one of the more minor negative impacts of technology is that students are distracted by their gadgets, causing them to fail their exams, tests, and grades on their report cards. Every year, millions of games and social media applications are launched in our modern society, and the majority of users are students, causing them to be distracted and unable to focus on a specific task such as academics. Distraction from using devices is the result of several drawbacks, such as procrastination, late submission, lower grades, and doing the activities in a hurry.
In conclusion, while technology has its benefits, it has also been abused by students, leading to issues such as cheating, plagiarism, and cyberbullying. Addressing these issues is crucial to ensure the safety and well-being of students and society as a whole. So, at the end of this argument, technology is both useful and bad for youths, which means that it all depends on how those students use it. Just keep in mind that humanity built this invention to make our lives easier, not to make us lazier.

The sun woke me up. Lazily climbing up in the sky, beckoning me to get something done on my last free weekend before high school would begin. 
On the drive up from Rifthold, Mom spent at least twenty minutes going over every detail of my newest ‘adventure’. 
Orynth Rise High School.
An extensive campus harboring some of Orynths brightest, and most wealthy, students. Large enough to be a university campus, with buildings stretching all over the acres of land situated right on the outskirts of the city. Apparently, the school has frequent renovations to update the already luxurious conditions. Spacious classrooms, lounge areas designated for different years, and all the newest tech. 
What really piqued my interest was the Orynth Grand Library, also on campus. 
Shortly after I woke, Mom appeared at my door with a peace offering. Black coffee. The tension between us was palpable, and in true Galathynius fashion, rather than facing that, she presented me with what looked like a body bag and a thick, but sturdy book. She instructed me that I should get started on the book, and familiarize myself with the suspicious body bag, before she walked away, again. 
I've curled myself up in the chair at my antique desk, and I flip through the hundreds of pages of Orynth Rise High School’s Code Of Conduct. I flip back to the uniform section - pages 34 to 57 - and read through the bulleted lists of do’s and don’ts. 
“...under no circumstance should a student ever find themselves in anything but the accepted ORHS uniform… should weather hinder standard protocol… leisure days are prohibited and behaviour that disobeys dress code will be…”
“How fun,” I murmur, still flipping through pages of dress code regulations. There are entire pages dedicated to washing instruction. 
My eyes drift over to where said uniforms are laid out on my bed. I've been provided with two dark green blazers, lined with gold stitching and gold buttons, and emblazoned with a sweeping arc of fire, soaring hawk, and ORHS stitching over the left breast. There are two black skirts, a pair of black pressed trousers, and a black uniform dress. Plus three starched, collared white shirts. And according to the ‘Code Of Conduct’ handbook, I'll need some sort of black-heeled or flat shoe. 
My gaze sweeps over the clothes. It really could be worse. The greens not terrible, and the gold is certainly unique. The hawk is definitely something, but I'm picking different battles. 
Riftholds Private Elementary School had basic uniforms, so this isn't a foreign notion, but younger me thought high school meant more freedom, like the freedom to wear jeans or something along those lines. 
The ticking of my brass clock punctuates the silence of my room, and I can hear the front door of the house open, then close. I shift off the desk chair and move to the bay window, where I have a clear view of Evalin Galathynius speed-walking towards the Audi parked in our driveway to the three-car garage. Her phone is between her shoulder and ear as she gets into the car, then promptly reverses and speeds off. 
And suddenly the day is feeling a lot more optimistic. 
Out of the corner of my eye, I see two teenage-looking boys tossing around a basketball. They're out playing on the driveway of the house across the street two doors down. There's a blond and a brunette, with identical deep skin tones. They toss the ball back and forth, run circles around each other, or simply push each other over. I crack a smile when the blond tosses the ball directly at the brunette's head and it bounces off, nearly going into the net. 
Both boys look like they're around my age, and I wonder if they attend ORHS. I continue to watch them until my staring borders on stalking, and I make my move to freshen up before I explore this new house.

I was born in Orynth. My Dad’s family was from here. But Rhoe and Evalin packed up and skipped town when I was three, and so I was whisked away from full evergreen trees and fresh mountain air to compact townhouses and to the heavy heat of a packed city. 
Why we moved away, I never really understood. But I also didn't know that I wasn't Ardalanian until I was nine. So while the wind coming through the window I cracked open in the kitchen smells like home, and settles onto me in a way I've never felt, I can't help but feel anxious with the lack of noise. Rifthold was loud, the city never slept. And living practically in the business center of the city meant that honking taxis and frustrated drivers were the constant background noise. 
Orynth is quiet. The mountains I can see from said kitchen window give me the impression of a sleeping giant. And capped in snow, I feel exceptionally out of my element. 
From scrounging around in the new kitchen, I find crackers and some licorice I bought at the gas station. A truly balanced breakfast. The dry crackers stick to the roof of my mouth, and the licorice tastes like plastic. I couldn't find plates, so my glorious meal is spread out on the butcher block countertop. 
The kitchen is nice, similar to the rest of the house. A navy blue theme carries throughout, decorating the large sectional couch, cabinets, and various pieces of unremarkable art. 
I feel like a weird stain upon this picture-perfect house, and to distract myself from the panic that's slowly creeping in, I pull my fancy phone out. Another Rhoe apology gift, the newest model I believe. 
I have fourteen unread messages from Dorian, some emails about promotional things I will never read, and a missed call from an unknown number. My phone tells me it's spam.

The typing bubble appears and disappears three times before I get a response.

I sigh, Isn't that the most popular question. I don't have an answer for my best friend because I don't even have an answer for myself.

And with that, I turn my phone off.
Lying to Dorian pains me. And he knows I'm full of shit, he can read me better than the books he practical consumes. But telling him that I have a suspicion that Dad’s cheating and Mom’s losing her mind probably is not the right way to go. 
After I choke down my meal, I rap my knuckles on the counter, bored. I push the barstool out and begin the trek to the front door, where I turn back around and face the house anew. Time for a tour.

My new home is probably the exact same as three other houses on the block, and I take my time observing everything. From the front door, you emerge into the cozy living room. With the aforementioned navy blue sectional facing the limescaled brick fireplace. A powder room is to the right, and down the hall, you make it into the kitchen. The matte black light fixtures fall down from the high ceilings, where the staircase wraps around the opposite end of the room. To the right, is what I assume to be Mom's master bedroom, and to the left is the dining room. Which leads into a full glass wall with a wonderful view of the fences that surround the backyard. 
My hand glides along the staircase railing, and when I reach the landing, rather than going to the right, back towards my bedroom, I turn left. Three rooms line this side of the house, and when I open the first door I’m met with a study. The far wall is windows, and a large desk sits in the middle of the room. I spot some of the boxes from the Audi in the corner of the room. So this will be Mom’s study. The next door is another washroom. Which makes four in this house already, if both my and my mother’s rooms have ensuites. 
When my hand reaches the handle of the final door, it doesn't move. I jiggle it around, maybe it's stuck? The door doesn't budge. 
More secrets. 
Just then I heard the front door open and my mother's heels on the hardwood floors. 
“Aelin! You better be up!” She calls out. 
I mentally groan, there goes my day.

Where Mom disappeared remains a mystery, but she returned with an overflowing need to go grocery shopping. 
Currently I am commandeering the shopping cart while she browses the organic cereals in the aisle. She's been perusing the brightly coloured boxes for a few minutes now, and I'm picking at my nails. I've peeled off a few layers surrounding, and the nail is bitten down. A symptom of my recent anxieties. 
"Aelin, love, do you want the strawberry granola or the blueberry? Both have all the macronutrients you need to be eating…" she trailed off. 
"Strawberry," I answer. 
She nodded and grabbed two boxes, setting them into the cart alongside our multitude of organic produce and lean meats. 
She grabbed the list out of the back pocket of her sleek trousers and scanned the remaining groceries needed. When she trotted off, I follow her. 
I was certainly not a picture of grace in this moment, body slumped over the handle of the cart, practically dragging my feet. And I felt slightly out of place here too. The grocery store we are in was one of the largest in the city, and the primary one as well. The people here looked different from those from rifthold. Hardened. Like the mountain air cooled their urgency, and they were living more for the moment. 
Which was a shocking comparison to the people of Rifthold, whose urgency permeated their very cores, and oozed out over everyone else. You couldn't walk down the streets in Rifthold without careening into someone rushing somewhere else. 
As we made our way over to the nutmilks, I snagged a bag of chocolates off the shelf. 
A teenage boy in red coveralls is browsing the dairy milks beside us. 
He's pretty, with blonde hair so light it looks silver. Tall too, and lanky. I stare at him while mom opens the door to grab vanilla almond milk. She catches my eye when she turns around to place the milk in the cart. Looking in the same direction as me, we both briefly watch as the boy places his carton of milk in a basket and backs away. 
She looks back at me, and I see a smile when she realises I was staring. 
"Don't start," I say, rolling my eyes. 
Her little smile doesn't fall, and when we turn to go, piercing green eyes catch my own, and the boy smiles at me too.

Through the Lens of a Student Journalist: Writing About Writing

It was a Wednesday morning back in 2015 when my English teacher called me. I got up from my seat and stopped to look at myself in the mirror of my classroom’s wall for a quick glance. I made sure to comb my slightly messy hair with my hands and fixed the crooked necktie before facing my teacher. My grandmother always told me to look presentable as much as possible.
“Gwen, I’ll assign you to be the news writer for collaborative desktop publishing, okay?” My teacher told me. I smiled and nodded my head. The thought of having my name in front of a paper made my heart swell with joy.
It turned out that being a student-journalist was not as easy as I thought it would be. As a beginner, I had to write and face the critiques of my teacher. During press conferences, I had to be with hundreds of aspiring writers in front of the stage and fight the discomfort of being squeezed in a small space with many people. I had to get my recorder as soon as the speech started. While holding it, I also have to write on my pad paper to note down the notable lines that the speaker said, eagerly listening to every word so I don’t have to miss out on anything. After that, I run to my group mates and together we go to our designated place to start working on our four-page publication. The time constraint is enough to make sweat drip down our foreheads and make our stomach sound in hunger.
However, it is all worth it when the day of awarding comes. Most especially when our name is called on stage and we get to have a medal and certificate in our hands. In 2016, we emerged 5th in the National Schools Press Conference under the category of Collaborative Desktop Publishing. In 2017, I ranked 2nd in Division Schools Press Conference under News Writing. In 2018, I ranked 7th in Division Schools Press Conference under News Writing and 2nd on Collaborative Desktop Publishing. In 2018, we placed 1st on Collaborative Desktop Publishing again during Division level which made us place 3rd on the 2019 Regional level. Throughout my years in competing, I have collected several awards already and some skills that helped me love writing.
From being a head news writer of the school publication to being an associate editor and now the editor-in-chief, I had to do a lot within a short period of time. I was writing articles, jotting down all what seemed like a thousand more things to do, while also proofreading and editing my fellow members’ works. There were times that I felt like my back was burning from staying in front of the screen for so long, or my hand sweat and hurt from writing long articles, and my body felt too heavy to do more after a tiring day of work.
I dealt with various challenges that made me grow as a writer and as a person too. I had to write a lot and catch the feedback of my advisers, which was sometimes kind but often not. Journalism taught me how to write under time constraints, meet deadlines, operate with limited resources, do interviews, gather data, conduct research, and utilize language as effectively as possible. Above all, it taught me to care, to feel, and to write.
