Imagine, if you will, that you're an adventurer in Eorzea who managed to get a little place in a city-state's residential district. One day you're in your house when you hear a knock at the door.

Jesper: So it’s time to cast your votes, fairy or walrus?
Matthias: Fairies aren’t real, so Id be more shocked to see one of them at the door
Wylan: How do you know fairies arent real?
Matthias: Have you ever seen a fairy?
Wylan: No, but Ive also never actually seen a walrus
Jesper: And how would a walrus get up the stairs? Knock on the door? Would no one see this massive creature strolling through the barrel?
Inej: I dont think a walrus would ‘stroll’ anywhere
Nina: He might roll? Or shimmy? How do they move on land anyway?
Wylan: To be fair we are near the harbour, so there could be a lost walrus. Though why they would want to visit the slat is anyones guess. And Jespers right, how would it get up the stairs?
Matthias: Why would a fairy visit but not a walrus?
Jesper: Im team fairy, a walrus turning up requires too many bizarre steps. A fairy just goes ‘poof! Im here’
Matthias: But its hard to knock on doors when your arms dont exist, because you dont exist
Inej: There is magic in this world so I think itd be less surprising to see a fairy at the door due to the logistics of it all
Jesper: Kaz? Care to weigh in?
Kaz: You expect me to actually entertain this debate?
The Crows: …?
Kaz: Walruses exist
The Crows: *Arguing all at once*

Re: walrus vs. fairy. The question is not “which is less likely” it's “which would you be most SURPRISED by”. Surprise is a feeling! It does not nescessarily correspond to one's logic. Of course the walrus is more likely, because the likelyhood of a fairy is zero. I know that. But that's not how I feel. The subconscious part of my brain expects the fairy more because I know from stories that knocking on someone's door is a normal thing for a fairy to do, and that fairies can go anywhere they want. However, by my door is the last place I expect a walrus to be. It goes against everything I know about walruses. Later, after I've thought about it, I would question the fairy more, but the moment I open the door, I would be more shocked by the walrus.

Some days this site is like what if the ghost of Harry Houdini and the ghost of Conan Doyle decided to settle a bet -
And Houdini won't stop yelling because Doyle is winning.

I think in the fairy vs walrus question, we’re failing to consider what kind of fairy we’re dealing with. like, is it a little tinker bell kind of fairy, or is it like an immortal eldritch forest spirit that can freely enter and exit time and space? I feel like this is kinda crucial to the answer idk

I wanted to add a little perspective to the walrus vs fairy debate.
I live in the United States, as many people on Tumblr do. In the United States, only three places currently have walruses in captivity: SeaWorld Orlando (in Florida), SeaWorld San Diego (in California), and Point Defiance Aquarium (in Tacoma, Washington). All three of these locations are on the coasts.
Additionally, the only place in the United States within wild walrus territory is Alaska, which isn't even part of the contiguous (attached to each other) United States -- the walrus would have to either walk through Canada or swim down the Pacific Ocean to reach a majority of the population.
To reach my location, a walrus would have to travel AT MINIMUM 911 miles/1466 kilometers from Florida up to DC without being hit by a car or train, caught, or stopped in any way.
So, yeah, I'd be pretty damn surprised if a walrus showed up at my door.

Scenario 1:
Day 1: A walrus is at my door. WTF. Big surprise. How?? Why?? Many questions.
Day 2: Fairies are at my door. Err... okay, this makes more sense now. SURE.
Scenario 2:
Day 1: Fairies are at my door. Holy shit... okay, this is erm, a thing. Let me go process and deal.
Day 2: A walrus is at my door. WTF. I still was very much not expecting this
In either scenario, I am still more perplexed and surprised at there being a Walrus on my doorstep.
