wip intro/masterpost - the raedoran cycle

hi hello here it is. my baby.

genre: fantasy

pov: third person limited, with various narrators throughout

status: a series of 4 novels/stories, in various states of drafting

summary: in one night, Raedora is thrown into chaos. the royal librarian murders the queen and her youngest daughter with magic and flees, leaving behind the king and the crown princess to pick up the pieces. the princess spirals slowly into madness as her sworn shield tries to save her, terrified of her dead sister's prophecy.

two thieves in the capital set their sights on the crown jewels after attending the queen's coronation. but when one gets a little too reckless and catches the attention of the Mad Dog of Morbhard, their plans quickly go off the rails.

when their parents are killed in the Dragon Purges, two shapeshifters must hide amongst their killers to survive. one, a talented healer, tries to build a life that will be safe for them, but her little brother has his sights set on avenging their parents by murdering the queen that ordered their deaths.

a young witch is raised alone by her father, always in hiding, with strange dreams and visions of the future. when he dies of an illness even her magic can't heal, she must strike out on her own, searching for answers to the prophecy that has followed her for her whole life.

so originally this was one novel following multiple characters, but thanks to a minor plot bunny that greatly spiraled out of control (lacuna) it has become something much more. many of the four novels' events occur simultaneously, with their stories overlapping and intertwining as the character's lives do the same.

Keelan: baby boy war criminal. he narrates the story as he tries to save Maura from herself.

Maura: the golden queen of Raedora. she lost half her family in 1 night and handed it incredibly well all things considered (no she didn't)

status: first draft finished(!!), shelved while it marinates and i work on the rest of the cycle. likely going to come back and edit it at some point but for now it is what it is

Arthur: master lockpick and ball of anxiety. he narrates his attempts to get Jack to notice him while also trying to steal the crown jewels.

Jack: cursed damned street rat. born on the night of the triple new moon and condemned to a life on the streets, he's got his sights set on stealing enough to get both him and Arthur out of Morbhard for good.

status: just barely starting to draft. fully outlined.

the dragons of kiltide

Emilia: the only voice of reason around here. a talented healer fighting to protect her baby brother from both the persecution they face in their homeland and the Purges that killed their parents.

Fabin: teenage ball of rage. his parents died in front of him when he was 13 and he has been supremely chill about it since then and doesn't everybody sleep with their sword under their bed?

status: outlining with the occasional scene.

Birdie: a talented witch born under and blessed by the full silver moon. raised by her father in the woods after fleeing the witch trials, she is determined to understand and fulfill her prophecy. her strange dreams of dragons, thieves, and knights lead her to a search for the people who she believes will help her in her journey.

status: it's complicated. this where all the original material lives for the most part so it's outlined(sort of??) and i've been writing scenes for it but idk what the actual timeline of events is and i've changed a LOT since i started. so it's a frankendraft mess. we'll get there eventually.

hi, if you don't mind could you please explain how did you make the duplicated Porsche effect? it looks so cool!!

oh thanks sm! also sure thing—i’m not amazing at explaining things though, so hopefully this makes sense! (tutorial below the cut):

i didn’t save my various psds for that porsche gifset, so i’m gonna use a tankhun gif that i’m working on for the #kpappreciation thing that i’m super behind on lmao. it’s not like, the ideal gif for this type of edit, but it should do.

first, make your gif the way you typically would (sizing, cropping, sharpening, etc.), then move your subject toward the left of your canvas:

next, duplicate your layer (i like to name them “layer 1,” “layer 2,” etc. just to keep things organized, but obviously you don’t have to do that) and move your subject toward the right of your canvas. on your new layer, add a layer mask:

after adding the layer mask, take a large, soft brush and paint with black over the left side of the layer mask—this will essentially erase that part of your layer and reveal your original layer underneath. play around with this part until it looks the way you want:

then, select both layers and convert them into one smart object. when you have just one layer again, duplicate that layer (once again, i rename the layers to keep things organized):

next, on your new duplicated layer, go to filter > blur gallery > path blur. these are my settings (but of course you can play around with it and do whatever you think looks best):

now add a layer mask to the blurred layer, and paint with black over the left side of the layer mask using a large, soft brush:

change the opacity of this layer to 40% (again, you don’t have to do everything exactly the way i do it, but between 40-50% looks best, in my opinion):

now duplicate the blurred layer (keeping its layer mask) and change the opacity to 100%, then set the blend mode to lighten:

finally, add your coloring (and whatever else you want) to the gif, and you’re done! personally, i think this type of effect looks best with a simple color gradient, so i went with hot pink for this example:

just to reiterate—i don’t think this effect looks as good on this particular gif as it does with that gif of porsche, but i simply didn’t feel like looking for another scene to use for this tutorial because i’m lazy <3

for sure! i am not the best at explanations so pls forgive me if this makes no sense (my ims are always open if you have any further questions). after creating/editing my gifs of choice i put them all in my order of choice and followed the steps best explained in this tutorial by @1-crazy-dreamer. however, instead of doing filter > blur > motion blur, i did filter > pixelate > mosaic for the first and last three frames of each of my gifs in intervals of 10. after taking all of those steps, your final product should be ready to go!

hi drea <3 i recently decided that i want to learn to code. was it hard to make your first theme? (to get what you wanted, 'your vision' or w/e) and if you dont mind sharing your source blogs/sites where did you learn :)

hey :) it was kind of hard! the hardest part of coding for me is finding exactly what i want it to look like, and how to achieve that while also trying to make it look the same on everyone else's screen sizes (while it may look good on your screen, it could look completely different one someone else's.) and also just coding on tumblr can be such a hassle, because the live preview might look a bit different than what you're see in the customize panel. coding is definitely something you might always struggle with because erasing or adding one little thing can change the entire thing! i have some knowledge from coding in the past, so if you're entirely new to it, it may see a bit more difficult. however there are so many resources out there that helped me and i'm sure will help u!

I love how i have... Kinda clear things/traits I don't like. But then I find them in people around me and I'm like 'hmmm... Yeah it's okay if it's you'

#miranda talking shit #I dont like people who always have to be right. Linnea and oliver loves being right and will argue to get to hear theyre correct #(with them i intentionally cause discorce and pull out proof when i know im not wrong. Normally i dont care but with them... I'll not let #Them have that satisfaction so easily. I dont like people who talk over me/interrupt me. Once again those two. But usually they do come #Back and let me continue my sentence.#I dont like people who remind me of my dad in any way. Sooo... Being into vehicles. Thats magnus but i love hearing him talk about that #Being passive/answering everything with an 'okay' instead of giving ones opinion or an elaborate answer. Fabin does this all the time #Bossy/wants to decide everything. Maya and linnea to some degree. Its funny bc all these things i see or notice #In people and they bug me so badly. But i spot them in people i love already and im like.... No that's okay #If im in a bad mood these things can annoy me but 9/10 times or more they don't. Like with fabian #I think its bc i know its... In a different way? He doesnt say okay as an way to show indifference. He does it to acknowledge what i say #Plus i mean.... I know olive got adhd so i am more linient with him interrupting me. I do tell him off sometimes tho #But its... Funny how much i look past or basically ignore of things i dislike when theyre in people i cherish #Cant even say i suppress my feelings or something i just .... snippet sunday

uhh not a thing but i'm making it one. post a recent snippet and tag ur morbos I guess @serenanymph @lyssa-ink @oh-no-another-idea @akindofmagictoo <3

working on an intro post for the raedoran cycle. until then here's fabin again and his sister emilia, meeting birdie for the first time.

They look exactly as they always did in her visions. The woman's thick red hair is tied back into a neat bun, an apron tied over her skirt as if she is going to start cooking right there in the field. The young man's black hair is tied in a ponytail at the nape of his neck and his hand is resting on the sword at his hip. Birdie's fingers shake as she laces them in front of herself.

The woman smiles at her, pausing a few feet away from the gate. “Hello.”

“Hello,” Birdie says, proud when her voice doesn't shake. “You're early.”

The man raises an eyebrow. “You were expecting us?”

“I was.” She opens the gate. “Would you like to come inside? I've a kettle on for tea.”

“That sounds lovely,” the woman says. The man doesn't argue, but he eyes Birdie warily as they follow her into the cottage. She sits in her chair at the table and pours the tea.

“My name is Birdie,” she says. “I'm a witch, but I'm guessing that's why you came here in the first place.”

“We're looking for safe passage out of Raedora,” the woman says. Birdie turns her gaze on the man.

“That's not what you want,” she says. He bares his teeth.

“The hell do you know about what I want?” he snarls.

Birdie shrugs. “I dream of you.”

He blinks, his mouth opening and closing with shock. The woman leans forward in her chair. “I had dreams about this place before,” she says. “Was that because of you?”

“No.” Birdie passes each of them a cup of tea. The man doesn't touch it; the woman sips politely. “The moons grant us our dreams.”

“Who the hell are you?” the man demands. His irises are so dark they look black and his eyes pierce through her. Birdie meets that burning gaze, a shiver running down her spine.

“Just Birdie.”
